This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the 10-minute submaximal treadmill test (T10 test), a self-paced test, in determining critical speed (CS) and predicting running performance. Specifically, we sought to identify the percentage of T10 velocity (vT10) that runners performed in official distance races, and to compare physiological and performance indicators between sexes. 60 recreational runners (n=34 males and n=26 females) underwent a maximum incremental test, the novel T10 test, and ran 1200-m and 2400-m on the track. Runners self-reported their best performance times. Generalized Linear Model was used to compare running performances between sexes. For both males and females, the %vT10 in 5 km, 10 km, and half-marathon races occurred at 107.5% and 106.5%, 99.9% and 100.8%, and 92.6% and 97.1%, respectively. There was no interaction effect (p=0.520) and no main effect of sex (p=0.443). There was a main effect of distance (p<0.001), indicating that %vT10 in the 5km race differed from that found in the 10 km race (p=0.012), as well as in the half-marathon (p<0.001). Assessment tools for depression and anxiety usually inquire about the frequency of symptoms. However, evidence suggests that different question framings might trigger different responses. Our aim is to test if asking about symptom's context, ability, duration, and botherment adds validity to Patient Health Questionnaire–9, General Anxiety Disorder–7, and Patient-Related Outcome Measurement Information Systems depression and anxiety. Participants came from two cross-sectional convenience-sampled surveys (N = 1,871) of adults (66% females, aged 33.4 ± 13.2), weighted to approximate with the state-level population. We examined measurement invariance across the different question frames, estimated whether framing affected mean scores, and tested their independent validity using covariate-adjusted and sample-weighted structural equation models. Validity was tested using tools assessing general disability, alcohol use, loneliness, well-being, grit, and frequency-based questions from depression and anxiety questionnaires. A bifactor model was applied to test the internal consistency of the question frames under the presence of a general factor (i.e., depression or anxiety). Measurement invariance was supported across the different frames. Framing questions as ability (i.e., "How easily ...") produced a higher score, compared with framing by context (i.e., "In which daily situations ..."). Construct and criterion validity analysis demonstrate that variance explained using multiple question frames was similar to using only one. We detected a strong overarching factor for each instrument, with little variances left to be explained by the question frame. Therefore, it is unlikely that using different adverbial phrasings can help clinicians and researchers to improve their ability to detect depression or anxiety. Public Significance Statement: Levels of depression and anxiety symptoms in patients are often assessed in terms of their frequency in the past weeks ("How often ..."). We found that asking participants about their depression and anxiety symptoms in relation to context, ability, duration, and botherment, instead of frequency alone, does not add information while assessing these symptoms in online assessments. Despite apparent connections between Brazilian and Spanish American narratives, comparative scholarship has only recently begun to investigate actively these important points of contact. In this study, we introduce a vital crossover between the two traditions, involving Juan Rulfo and Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. Rulfo's outspoken affinity for Brazilian literature, especially his reading of "Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas," reveals potential ties between not only Machado's novel and "Pedro Páramo," but also the broader literary histories of Spanish America and Brazil. As we address this specific case of possible influence and reception, we hope to promote not only comparative studies on Latin American authors, but also collaborative work "between" scholars in an effort to move Spanish American and Brazilian scholarship toward a more inclusive dialogue.

Six patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) plants showing symptoms of viral infection were found in Brazil. Transmission electron microscopy revealed flexuous particles and characteristic pinwheel‐shaped cytoplasmic inclusions of potyvirus in sap and cells of symptomatic leaves. Potyvirus infection was confirmed through RT‐PCR, using universal primers followed by nucleotide sequencing. The obtained sequences, comprising part of the CP gene and the 3′ non‐translated region, showed 97.71%–97.87% identity with an isolate of bidens mosaic virus (BiMV). The nucleotide sequences of the CP, HC‐Pro and CI genes of BiMV isolates from patchouli plants were obtained through RT‐PCR with specific primers followed by nucleotide sequencing. The obtained sequences showed 95.78%–97.1% identities with BiMV isolates from Brazil. One BiMV isolate from a patchouli infected plant was sap‐transmitted to different plant species. Chenopodium amaranticolor exhibited local lesions, Bidens pilosa developed leaf mosaic, and Nicotiana benthamiana exhibited chlorosis and stunting. The BiMV isolate was transmitted from infected patchouli plant to B. pilosa using Myzus persicae aphids. This is the first confirmation of patchouli infected with BiMV in Brazil. Further studies are necessary to assess the incidence of this potyvirus in commercial patchouli crops, as well as the damage caused to plant development and the quantity and quality of essential oils produced. The particular plant species found in southern Brazil, Vassobia breviflora (Solanaceae) has only a few apparent studies examining its biological effect. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine the activity of the acetone extract fraction derived from V. breviflora. Four compounds were identified by ESI-qTOF-MS: eucalrobusone R, aplanoic acid B, pheophorbide A, and pheophytin A. In addition, 5 compounds were identified by HPLC-PDA-MS/MS: all-trans-lutein, 15-cis-lutein, all-trans-β-carotene, 5,8-epoxy-β-carotene, and cis-β-carotene. Cell lines A549 (lung cancer), A375 (melanoma cancer) and HeLa (cervical cancer) were incubated with different concentrations of each studied extract using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and 2'−7'dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA) assays. The acetonic extract exhibited cytotoxic activity at a concentration of 0.03 mg/ml in the HeLa strain and 0.1 mg/ml in the others. In addition to increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Antibacterial activity was assessed utilizing minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) in 9 ATCCs strains and 7 clinical isolates, as well as determination of biofilm production. Data demonstrated that MIC and MBC were approximately 256 mg/ml in most of the strains tested and antibiofilm effect at S. aureus, S. epidermidis, A. baumannii, and E. faecalis, concentrations below the MIC. Glyphosate is Brazil's most widely used pesticide, often applied to different crops that may be close to temporary wetlands. This pesticide poses a threat to populations of annual killifish that live in these locations. Few studies have explored the toxicodynamics of pesticides in annual killifish. Here females of Cynopoecilus sp. at different development stages (young-adult and senile) are exposed to Roundup Original DI® herbicide (65, 130 and 260 µg/L of acid equivalent of N-phosphomethyl glycine (glyphosate)) to analyze its impact on oxidative balance and lipoperoxidation, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and SOD/CAT ratio, as well as markers of intermediary metabolism such as total proteins (TPs), glycogen, and uric acid (UA). Senile females showed increased CAT and glutathione S-transferase activities and a decreased SOD/CAT ratio. Total protein and UA values were increased. Two-way ANOVA demonstrated correlations between age and different exposure groups for lipoperoxidation, SOD, CAT, GST, TPs, and UA, especially in senile females. Although it is not considered a target species, Cynopoecilus sp. suffers harmful effects from the interaction with this herbicide even at environmentally relevant concentrations. This impact was observed in senile females, which may result in reduced life cycle and reproduction quality. Exposure to Roundup Original® herbicide does not cause lipoperoxidation in females. Glyphosate-based herbicide exposure modulated oxidative balance markers. Herbicide exposure caused changes in the metabolism (total proteins (TPs) and uric acid) of young adults. Plumeria pudica, known as bridal bouquet, exhibiting characteristic symptoms of orthotospovirus infection were found in different localities in Brazil. Symptoms were restricted to leaves of the middle and lower thirds of a few branches of each plant. Electron microscopy, molecular analyses, and complete genome sequencing identified the orthotospovirus as groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV),member of the species Orthotospovirus arachianuli. The virus was poorly transmitted mechanically to P. pudica. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analyses performed using total RNA extracted from leaf blades, primary veins, petioles, and regions of petiole insertion on branches indicated the presence of GRSV, predominantly in the symptomatic leaf blades. Symptomatic branches propagate vegetatively, often resulting in plants expressing GRSV symptoms. In contrast, vegetative propagation of the asymptomatic branches of infected plants predominantly generates plants without GRSV symptoms. The resistance of P. pudica plants to GRSV infection, restricted systemic viral movement, and expression of symptoms in infected plants suggest that this orthotospovirus does not threaten this ornamental plant. Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) and Mediterranean (MED) were reported as the sole vectors for tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV), the prevalent begomovirus infecting tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L., Solanaceae) in Brazil. To improve our understanding on the interactions between B. tabaci and ToSRV, we studied the effects of the virus on the performance of MEAM1 and MED. Comparing adults' performance on non-infected and ToSRV-infected tomato plants, the number of hatched eggs and emerged adults decreased for both MEAM1 and MED in infected tomato plants. However, the negative effect was more evident for MED, where the emergence of adults was reduced by 90% on ToSRV-infected tomatoes. In addition, the developmental time and percentage survival of MED on ToSRV-infected plants were severely affected compared to non-infected plants, while no differences were observed for MEAM1. Preference assays showed that non-viruliferous MEAM1 adults preferred to settle on non-infected plants in initial times (from 1 h to 6 h) but did not show preference between non-infected and infected plants in other evaluated times (from 12 h to 72 h). Viruliferous MEAM1 adults did not show a preference for either ToSRV-infected or non-infected plants. In contrast, MED non-viruliferous and viruliferous adults preferred to settle on non-infected plants compared to ToSRV-infected tomato plants. Our results indicate that ToSRV differently influences the performance and behavior of the whitefly species MEAM1 and MED, negatively interfering with the life parameters of MED. Passiflora virus Y was detected naturally infecting soybean (Glycine max) for the first time in Brazil. Here, we report the nearly complete genome sequence and molecular and biological properties of the PaVY-Br isolate. The nearly complete genome sequence is 9679 nt long and shares 84.4% nt sequence identity with a previously reported PaVY isolate from Passiflora sp. PaVY-Br induced chlorotic spots and systemic mosaic on soybean and chlorotic local lesions on yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) and sesame (Sesamum indicum). The virus was successfully transmitted by Myzus persicae, indicating that this aphid vector can contribute to the spread of PaYV from passion fruit to soybean plants. Flower stems of the Heliconiaceae family are gaining more and more space in the Brazilian market of ornamental plants and further knowledge about quality, productivity, and postharvest management is necessary. The objective of the present study was to evaluate heliconiaceae cultivated in full sun in the central-west region of Brazil in terms of agronomic traits and to determine the postharvest durability of floral stems submitted to cold storage. Accessions of Heliconia bihai cultivar Caribea, H. bihai cultivar Iris Red, and H. rauliniana were evaluated. Quantitative and qualitative morphological characteristics, the total number of flower stems produced, and number of marketable stems were obtained. Postharvest longevity was tested in a cold chamber at 16 °C and 19 °C and at ambient temperature of 26 °C. Morphological characteristics such as the length, diameter and fresh mass of flower stems, inflorescence length, and postharvest durability of the inflorescences were the most affected. The most important variables were the quality of flower stems, productivity of marketable stems, and postharvest durability. The studied heliconias presented agronomic characters within the commercialization standards, highlighting H. bihai (Caribea) which presented the highest productivity. Soybean stem necrosis is caused by cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV), transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. CPMMV has already been recorded in all major soybean-producing areas of Brazil. The impacts caused by CPMMV to the current Brazilian soybean production are unknown, thus the main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of CPMMV infection on the main important soybean cultivars grown in the Southern and Midwestern regions of Brazil. Although asymptomatic in some of the tested cultivars, CPMMV infection significantly reduced the plant height, the number of pods per plant and the 1,000-grain weight. In addition, estimated yield losses ranged from 174 to 638 kg ha-1, depending on the cultivar. Evidence of seed transmission of CPMMV was observed in the BMX POTÊNCIA RR cultivar. These results suggest that CPMMV could have an important role in the reduction of soybean productivity in Brazil, but symptomless infections might be hiding the actual impact of this pathogen in commercial fields and infected seeds could be the primary inoculum source of the virus in the field. The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is one of the most important agricultural pests and virus vectors worldwide. Bemisia tabaci is considered a complex of cryptic species with at least 44 species. Among them, the species Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1, formerly B biotype) and Mediterranean (MED, formerly Q biotype) are the most important, and they have attained global status. In Brazil, MEAM1 was first reported in the 1990s and is currently the predominant species in the country, meanwhile, MED was recently reported in the South and Southeast regions and was found to be mainly associated with ornamental plants. Currently, an increasing problem in the management of whitefly infestations in greenhouses associated with bell pepper was observed in São Paulo State, Brazil. The whiteflies were collected and identified based on a microsatellite locus (primer pair BEM23F and BEM23R) and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis and sequencing. We observed that MED was the predominant species collected on bell pepper, but it was also found on tomato, cucumber, eggplant, and weeds grown in greenhouses. In open field, we found MED on tomatoes, bell peppers, and eggplants. In addition, MED was identified in Goiás State in association with ornamental plants. The begomovirus Tomato severe rugose virus and the crinivirus Tomato chlorosis virus was detected on bell pepper and tomato, respectively. Only MED specimens were found associated with the virus-infected plants. Moreover, we also investigated the endosymbionts present in the MED whiteflies. The collected populations of B. tabaci MED harbored a diversity of secondary endosymbionts, with Hamiltonella (H) found predominantly in 89 specimens of the 129 tested. These results represent a new concern for Brazilian agriculture, especially for the management of the newly introduced whitefly MED species, which must be implemented to limit the spreading and establishment of this pest in different crops in this country. Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV) is the most important begomovirus transmitted and spread by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in tomato crops in Brazil. Cultural practices are being adopted, along with insecticides, for controlling this virus. However, little is known about the importance of weeds in the pathosystem, which can contribute to the failure of these practices. This work aimed to evaluate the role of Datura stramonium and Nicandra physaloides as alternative hosts of ToSRV and verify the viral influence on the biological performance of Bemisia tabaci Middle East‐Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) and Mediterranean (MED) cryptic species. N. physaloides was a better alternative host for ToSRV when combined with MEAM1 whiteflies, while D. stramonium was mostly a good host for whitefly reproduction. Viral infection improved MEAM1 performance on both host plants but affected MED performance negatively. Context: Dancing has been used as a form of exercise to improve functional and metabolic outcomes during aging. The field lacks randomized, clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating metabolic outcomes related to dance interventions, but dancing may be a form of exercise that could induce positive effects on the metabolic health of older adults. However, primary studies seem very heterogonous regarding the trial designs, characteristics of the interventions, the methods for outcomes assessments, statistical powers, and methodological quality.Objective: The current research team intended to review the literature on the use of dance as a form of intervention to promote functional and metabolic health in older adults. Specifically, the research team aimed to identify and describe the characteristics of a large range of studies using dance as an intervention, summarizing them and putting them into perspective for further analysis.Design: The research team searched the following data sources-MEDLINE, Cochrane Wiley, Clinical Trials.gov, the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDRO), and the Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS)-for RCTs, quasi-experimental studies, and observational trials that compared the benefits of any style of dancing, combined with other exercises or alone, to nonexercising controls and/or controls practicing other types of exercise.Setting: The study took place at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil).Participants: Participants were aging individuals, >55 y, both with or without health conditions.Interventions: Interventions should be supervised, taking form as group classes, in a dance setting environment. Dance styles were divided into 5 categories for the review: (1) cultural dances developed by groups of people to reflect the roots of a certain region, such as Greek dance; (2) ballroom dance (ie, dances with partners performed socially or competitively in a ballroom, such as foxtrot); (3) aerobic dance with no partner required, which mixes aerobic moves with dance moves; (4) dance therapies, whichare special dance programs including emotional and physical aspects; and (5) classical dances, which are dances with a unique tradition and technique, such as ballet or jazz dance.Outcome Measures: Studies needed to have evaluated functional and/or metabolic outcomes. Functional outcomes included (1) static and/or dynamic balance, (2) gait ability, (3) upper and/or lower muscle strength or power, (4) cardiorespiratory fitness, (5) flexibility, (6) risk of falls, and (7) quality of life. Metabolic outcomes included (1) lipid and glycemic profile; (2) systolic and diastolic blood pressure; (3) body composition; and (4) other specific cardiovascular risk factors or inflammatory or oxidative stress markers.Results: The research team retrieved 1042 articles, with 88 full texts assessed for eligibility, and 50 articles included in the analysis. Of the analyzed studies, 22 were RCTs evaluating dancing vs controls, and 3 were RCTs evaluating dancing vs other exercise. Regarding the participants of the reviewed studies: (1) 31 evaluated healthy individuals, (2) 7 evaluated patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, (3) 4 evaluated postmenopausal women, (4) 2 evaluated obese women, (5) 2 evaluated patients with chronic heart failure, (6) 1 evaluated frail older adults, (7) 1 evaluated individuals with visual impairments, (8) 1 evaluated persons with metabolic syndrome, and (9) 1 evaluated individuals with severe pain in the lower extremities. Regarding the interventions, most interventions were 12 wk long, 3 ×/wk, for 60 min each session. The dance styles most used were ballroom and cultural dances. Regarding the outcomes, functional and metabolic benefits were described in most of the included studies. Balance was the functional outcome most often assessed.Conclusions: Any dance style can induce positive functional adaptations in older adults, especially related to balance. Metabolic improvements may also be a result of dancing; however, more RCTs are needed. Dancing may be a potential exercise intervention to promote health-related benefits for aging individuals. Objective: To evaluate the epidemiological profile of patients seen at a dementia outpatient clinic. Methods: A retrospective study conducted by medical record review searching data on sex, race, age, schooling level, and diagnosis of patients seen from 2008 to 2015. Results: A total of 760 patients were studied, with a predominance of female (61.3%; p<0.0001). The mean age was 71.2±14.43 years for women and 66.1±16.61 years for men. The most affected age group was 71 to 80 years, accounting for 29.4% of cases. In relation to race, 96.3% of patients were white. Dementia was diagnosed in 68.8% of patients, and Alzheimer's disease confirmed in 48.9%, vascular dementia in 11.3%, and mixed dementia in 7.8% of cases. The prevalence of dementia was 3% at 70 years and 25% at 85 years. Dementia appeared significantly earlier in males (mean age 68.5±15.63 years). As to sex distribution, it was more frequent in women (59.6%) than in men (40.4%; p<0.0001; OR=2.15). People with higher schooling level (more than 9 years) had a significantly younger age at onset of dementia as compared to those with lower schooling level (1 to 4 years; p=0.0007). Conclusion: Most patients seen in the period presented dementia, and Alzheimer was the most prevalent disease. Women were more affected, and men presented young onset of the disease. Histoplasmosis is a worldwide distributed opportunistic mycosis caused by the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. It is reported in cats with non-specific clinical signs. The aim of this case report is to describe the first case of disseminated histoplasmosis in a cat in the city of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In veterinary consultation, it was reported that the animal had a history of vomiting, hematochezia, and weight loss for 3 months. At physical exam, an abdominal lymph adenomegaly, an intestine diffusely enlarged, and a poor body condition were observed. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the caudal mesenteric lymph node was performed. Cytology revealed pyogranulomatous infiltrate with the presence of yeast organisms, cells compatible with H. capsulatum. The treatment prescribed was itraconazole. Culture of the caudal mesenteric lymph node sample confirmed the cytological diagnosis. Physical, hematological, and ultrasonographic exams were undertaken periodically. On day 139 of treatment, the itraconazole dose was increased once the patient had anemia and periodic vomiting; also, the abdominal lymph node size decrease was not remarkable. After that, the cat showed a better clinical response. On day 459 of treatment, the owners had decided to interrupt the treatment but the cat was still referred to the hospital for clinical and ultrasound evaluation. Fifteen months post diagnosis, the patient was alive and healthy. Feline histoplasmosis is an uncommon disease in our region. Therefore, this manuscript alerts veterinarians to the presence of this infection in the region of Santa Maria and emphasizes the importance of FNAC as a diagnostic tool for infectious diseases. This paper aims to investigate how knowledge management is promoted in the practices of a technology‐based organization with the support of the tools and resources of internal marketing and internal communication. We conducted a basic qualitative research with empirical data collected in a large organization in Brazil and analyzed it through the general analytic strategy. The main findings reveal that knowledge management can be promoted and showcased internally by the techniques and approaches of internal marketing and internal communication, in a similar way to an internal advertising agency. However, some key features are not being used systematically, suggesting a lack of vision in its applicability to the internal audience. The results also reveal the lack of functional attribution and of intentional awareness about the promotion of knowledge management targeted to the second generation of knowledge management, more oriented to the creation of knowledge in a technology‐based organization. Background and objectives: Zika virus is a flavivirus transmitted by Aedes mosquitos. A discussed transmission route is by blood transfusion due to the large number of ZIKV asymptomatic cases. The objective of the study was to estimate the ZIKV IgG seroprevalence and RNA presence in blood donors from a Hemotherapy Service in Southern Brazil due to the fact that until the end of 2016, 851 ZIKV suspected cases, 51.2% of which were with autochthons transmission were reported in this Brazilian region. Materials and methods: Five hundred blood samples were collected from blood donors between 5 December 2016 and 6 January 2017 in the Hemotherapy Service of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. All samples were tested for the presence of ZIKV RNA by the use of TaqMan® real‐time PCR and 182 of these were serologically assessed for ZIKV IgG. Results: No samples showed positive results for ZIKV RNA. However, the serological survey detected one positive sample for ZIKV IgG and four samples with optical density values in the grey zone (consequently three of them confirmed as Dengue IgG‐positive). This indicates a 0.55% seroprevalence of ZIKV IgG among volunteer blood donors in the city of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that although the transfusion risk of ZIKV in the south part of the country can be currently considered as low, further outbreaks cannot be excluded due to lack of herd immunity to ZIKV. Bemisia tabaci is an important agriculture pests and vector of viruses. The MEAM1 species of B. tabaci, first described in Brazil in the 90s is now the most prevalent species and primary cause of the emergence of begomoviruses in tomatoes. The Mediterranean species (MED) was recently detected in Brazil and is a new concern for Brazilian agriculture. The potential impact of this species as a vector of economically important virus in Brazil is unknown. We therefore evaluated the ability of MED to transmit four whitefly transmitted viruses prevalent in Brazil, Cowpea mild mottle virus (CpMMV, carlavirus), Bean golden mosaic virus (BGMV, begomovirus) infecting beans; and the Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV, begomovirus), Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV, crinivirus) infecting tomatoes. The colony of MED harbouring the secondary endosymbionts was tested: 14% positive for Hamiltonella and 29% positive for Rickettsia. After six months being maintained on cotton plants, this colony changed the frequency of endosymbionts (97% of Hamiltonella and 1% of Rickettsia) and was denominated as MEDH. Additionally, a colony of MEAM1 (98% positive for Hamiltonella and 91% positive for Rickettsia) was also tested. The viruses were efficiently transmitted by MED, but transmission efficiency varied among the MED and MEDH, being CpMMV, BGMV and ToCV better transmitted by MEDH. Moreover, transmission efficiency of ToSRV and ToCV by MEDH was even significantly better than MEAM1. We conclude that specimens from B. tabaci MED are good vectors of virus infecting tomato and beans in Brazil and populations with Hamiltonella prevalence increased the virus transmission. The therapeutic potential of Baccharis anomala DC. extracts was evaluated through its cytotoxic and antiproliferative effect and their phenotypic reversion property in activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Baccharis anomala is distributed in Brazil (southeastern and south regions) and used for diuretic effect in folk medicine. Four fractions were obtained from the fractionation of the methanolic extract. Fractions III and IV decreased cell proliferation without increasing cell necrosis markers levels and induced cell cycle arrest in G1 phase. Fraction III induced phenotypic reversion through PPAR-γ activation pathway, while fraction IV did not alter PPAR-α/γ expression levels, suggesting that there is an independent PPAR-α/γ pathway involved. Hydroxybenzoic, chlorogenic and coumaric acids were identified. Fractions III and IV showed antiproliferative effect and ability to induce reversion of activated phenotype of HSCs. The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, is a species complex of more than 40 cryptic species and a major agricultural pest. It causes extensive damage to plants mainly by transmitting plant viruses. There is still a lack of genomic data available for the different whitefly species found in Brazil and their bacterial endosymbionts. Understanding the genetic and transcriptomic composition of these insect pests, the viruses they transmit and the microbiota is crucial to sustainable solutions for farmers to control whiteflies. Illumina RNA-Seq was used to obtain the transcriptome of individual whiteflies from 10 different populations from Brazil including Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1), Mediterranean (MED) and New World 2 (NW2). Raw reads were assembled using CLC Genomics Workbench and subsequently mapped to reference genomes. We obtained whitefly complete mitochondrial genomes and draft genomes from the facultative bacterial endosymbiont Hamiltonella for further phylogenetic analyses. In addition, nucleotide sequences of the GroEL chaperonin gene from Hamiltonella from different populations were obtained and analysed. There was concordance in the species clustering using the whitefly complete mitogenome and the mtCOI gene tree. On the other hand, the phylogenetic analysis using the 12 ORF’s of Hamiltonella clustered the native species NW2 apart from the exotics MEAM1 and MED. In addition, the amino acid analysis of GroEL chaperonin revealed a deletion only in Hamiltonella infecting NW2 among whiteflies populations analysed which was further confirmed by PCR and Sanger sequencing. The genomic data obtained in this study will aid understanding the functions that Hamiltonella may have in whitefly biology and serve as a reference for further studies regarding whiteflies in Brazil. BACKGROUND The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is a major cosmopolitan pest and comprises a complex of more than 36 cryptic species that cause serious damage to agricultural crops worldwide. In this study, the Mediterranean species of B. tabaci, formerly known as Q biotype, was identified for the first time in Brazil. RESULTS Adult B. tabaci were collected from different localities and hosts from Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of the country that borders Uruguay and Argentina. Partial sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I ( mtCOI) gene indicated that B. tabaci MED species appears to be restricted to the province of Barra do Quaraí, infesting Capsicum annuum cultivated in greenhouses and Ipomoea batatas in open fields. The partial mtCOI sequences obtained shared 100% nucleotide identity with reference sequences for the Q biotype reported from Uruguay. The secondary endosymbionts Hamiltonella and Cardinium were detected by PCR in the new identified MED species from Brazil, similarly to the Q biotype from Uruguay. CONCLUSION Our results indicate the presence of the MED species in Brazil. Herbicides are the most commonly applied pesticides in Brazil, specifically those based on glyphosate, and are used for different crops, near the habitats of annual killifish. Annual killifish presents a short life cycle with generally restricted geographic distribution. In this context, we evaluated the effect of the Roundup Original© (65, 130 and 260 µg. L−1 of glyphosate) herbicide on different development stages (adult-young and senile) of the annual killifish (Cynopoecilus sp.). We quantified the oxidative balance markers (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione S-transferase, lipid peroxidation levels, and total proteins). We observed that the senile individuals presented 2-fold higher lipid peroxidation levels associated with the maintenance of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity levels even after exposure to the herbicide. However, senile subjects were negatively impacted by the exposure to formulations containing glyphosate, and this was related to a loss of glutathione S-transferase activity. Our research demonstrated that the established physiological markers and this species look promising for toxicology studies. We investigated abundance variations and life history traits (body size, sex ratio, length–weight relationships and condition factor) of two species of annual fish (Austrolebias minuanoCosta and Cheffe andCynopoecilus fulgensCosta) in temporary ponds of southern Brazil. Six samples were taken from small temporary ponds during three annual seasons over 2 years (2008–2009). A total of 104 individuals ofA. minuanoand 433 individuals ofC. fulgenswere collected. The abundance of both species tended to decrease from autumn to spring in the 2 years. The overall sex ratio ofA. minuanoandC. fulgenswere 1.0 male to 1.8 females and 1 male to 1.04 females, respectively. Juveniles of both species occurred only in autumn over the two years and no adult was observed during this season. Background: The Neotropical genus Austrolebias is the most diverse of the Rivulidae family, with 22 species recorded in Brazil, with 21 found in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Austrolebias quirogai Loureiro, Duarte et Zarucki 2011 is an annual fish previously only found in Uruguay and there is currently no information about their ecology and life history. Here, we recorded A. quirogai for the first time in temporary wetlands in Brazil. Furthermore, we provide information about population parameters, life history traits, conservation status, and habitat characteristics. Materials and methods: We captured the fish with a D-shaped hand net in a sampling survey carried out in October 2012 in the Jaguarão-Chico River, Aceguá municipality, Brazil. We analysed density (CPUA), body size, length-weight relation (LWR), condition factor (K), and sex ratio. Results: We recorded a total of three populations of Austrolebias quirogai in the Jaguarão-Chico River. The CPUA was 0.33 fish · m-2. The sex ratio relation did not differ significantly and was 1.5 : 1 (M : F). The mean body size between sexes was not statistically different. The LWR of A. quirogai was W = 0.011TL3.23. The value of parameter b was significantly different from 3.0 for males and females, both sexes presenting positive allometric growth. The K for A. quirogai differed between sexes. Females had higher values than males. All populations of A. quirogai were found in ponds smaller than 1000 m² and were degraded by the activity of rice and soybean cultivation and overgrazing. We consider A. quirogai an endangered species in Brazil because of: its reduced area of occupancy, populations becoming severely fragmented, and suffering a continuous decrease in their area of occupancy and the quality of habitat. Conclusion: The observed results may be used to assist the development of management strategies and conservation of the species and its habitat. Moreover, they provide basic information for the evaluation of the conservation status of the species according to IUCN criteria and for the definition of priority areas for conservation in southern Brazil. Background. The genus Atlantirivulus includes 11 species distributed along coastal river basins and lagoons of eastern and southern Brazil. Most killifishes are threatened with extinction mostly due to their restricted distribution ranges, small population sizes, and habitat loss. Poor knowledge on ecological- and life history information further increases the threats. Atlantirivulus riograndensis (Costa et Lanés, 2009) is a non-annual, small-sized fish endemic in the Laguna dos Patos basin and adjacent coastal areas in southern Brazil. There is no information on the life history and ecology of the species. In this paper, we analyzed population traits of A. riograndensis to support conservation efforts. Materials and methods. The fish were captured with a D-shaped hand net in six sampling surveys carried out between 2008 (June, August, and October) and 2009 (March, August, and October) in the type locality of A. riograndensis. The observed results may be used to assist the development of management strategies and conservation of the species and its habitat, mainly in a region where 90% of wetland systems were lost by agriculture, and the remaining areas are at high risk due to the expansion of exotic pine plantations. Orientation and fidelity to nesting areas were analyzed in a population of Orbigny's slider turtle,Trachemys dorbigni(Duméril & Bibron, 1835), in southern Brazil. Monitoring was carried out over a 5-year period using the mark–recapture technique for females moving overland during the nesting season. The positions of 90 females were analyzed. We also tested the capacity to return to the nesting site after the female was translocated to another point. The overall mean distance between two consecutive captures for females that had not been translocated to the release point was 545.0 m, whereas for females that were translocated the mean distance was 523.8 m. The fish sampled in this study were captured in seasonal collections samplings, conducted between May 2006 and February 2007 in 15 stretches of the Corrientes stream basin, Patos lagoon system, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. A total of 8088 specimens were collected, belonging to nine orders, 24 families and 68 species. In general, the ichthyofauna in this basin has the same pattern recognized for Neotropical rivers with predominance of Characiformes and Siluriformes orders and a high representative of the Characidae and Loricariidae families. The integrated production of peach (IPP) had its first milestone in Brazil in 1999. This study examined the technological level in which are producers of peach, identifying the rate of adoption of integrated production systems (IP), seeking to highlight the determinants of its validation. For this, a semi-structured questionnaire was performed with 20 peach producers, in which were raised information about the production units regarding its characterization and production technology, in the period from 2006 to 2007. The main factors identified as limiting for the management of IPP were: little knowledge about standard IPP, restricted list of pesticides registered for agriculture use, lack of differentiation and return on peach produced under the rules of IP. The points detected as positive were: identification of increased interest on MIP by producers, with emphasis on: identifying the environmental benefits and protection of the producer, reduction of external inputs (particularly pesticides) and soil management operations. Feces of 70 diarrhoeic and 230 non-diarrhoeic domestic cats from São Paulo, Brazil were investigated for enteropathogenic (EPEC), enterohaemorrhagic (EHEC) and enterotoxigenic (ETEC) Escherichia coli types. While ETEC and EHEC strains were not found, 15 EPEC strains were isolated from 14 cats, of which 13 were non-diarrhoeic, and one diarrhoeic. None of 15 EPEC strains carried the bfpA gene or the EPEC adherence factor plasmid, indicating atypical EPEC types. The EPEC strains were heterogeneous with regard to intimin types, such as eae-θ (three strains), eae-κ ( n = 3), eae-α1 ( n = 2), eae-ι ( n = 2), one eae-α2, eae-β1 and eae-η each, and two were not typeable. The majority of the EPEC isolates adhered to HEp-2 cells in a localized adherence-like pattern and were positive for fluorescence actin staining. The EPEC strains belonged to 12 different serotypes, including O111:H25 and O125:H6, which are known to be pathogens in humans. Multi locus sequence typing revealed a close genetic similarity between the O111:H25 and O125:H6 strains from cats, dogs and humans. Our results show that domestic cats are colonized by EPEC, including serotypes previously described as human pathogens. As these EPEC strains are also isolated from humans, a cycle of mutual infection by EPEC between cats and its households cannot be ruled out, though the transmission dynamics among the reservoirs are not yet understood clearly. A beach profile monitoring programme was initiated in 1997 as a contribution to the development of recommendations for an integrated coastal zone management scheme of the mangrove peninsula of Braganc¸a, State of Para´ (North Brazil). It was the first scientific investigation on the coastal morphodynamics in a mangrove environment, which was opened for human use only since the mid-1970s. The observations were carried out on five sections for 4 years, on a fortnightly basis whenever possible.Temporal evolution of the beach morphology was assessed using time series of beach height, changes in profile shape, sediment transport calculations, and photographs. This unique data set for new settlement areas in this mangrove-dominated coastal zone illuminates the role of the interaction between human activities and natural coastal dynamics. Four coastal cells were identified as coastal management units, each with specific dynamic behaviour and utilisation by humans. The cells are rather small with dimensions in the order of 1–3 km.Only one of the units (cell 1) had a stable coastline during the 4 years of observation, while all others are eroding. Clearing of vegetation is the principal reason for the enhancement of the natural chronic erosion at these sites. In the wake of increasing tourism, housing was erected on the first dune ridge (cell 2) with much damage to the natural vegetation. In this unit, erosion is predominantly targeted on the dunes. In cell 3, the most important reason for the increased erosion is clearing of the adjacent fringing mangroves. This is also true for cell 4, but additionally the construction of large fishing traps, which artificially entrap sand and create sandbanks and thereby increase velocities in the tidal channel tend to enhance erosion at the shoreline. Only for cell 1 can protection measures for the still available vegetation be recommended while a planned retreat of many tourism facilities and fishermen's housings should be included in management recommendations. In the area of a coastal fishing village on the mangrove peninsula of Braganc¸a, State of Para´, North Brazil, coastal changes were observed by a beach profile monitoring programme between 1997 and 2001. The assessment allowed a subdivision of the region into four small coastal cells (1–3 km), partly exhibiting heavy erosion. A number of related socio-economic problems, such as loss of alternative income sources caused by the locally unpredictable erosion patterns were identified in three separate village sections. This results in a year-round dependence on seasonally low fishery incomes and increases the risk of poverty. Since limited options for action are available to the local population, different social groups have evolved different land use patterns, which in turn influence local coastal morphodynamics. Not only the hydrodynamic signature, but also the socio-economic organisation of a coastal community and the co-evolutionary path between these two variables thus indicate the state of a coastal system and the most promising policy actions towards sustainable coastal management. The evaluation of occurrence, risk quotient (RQ), bioaccumulation factor (BAF), and sources of PAH was conducted in Sergipe-Poxim estuarine system. PAH distribution that ranged from 7.1 to 30.9 ng L−1 (surface water, SW), 5.4 to 19.5 ng g−1 (sediment, S), and 4.3 to 18.1 ng g−1 (oyster, O), characterized the environment with low contamination; 2-3 (SW), 5-6 (S), and 4 (O) PAH rings accounted for 54.5%, 68.7%, and 87.7%, respectively, along with naphthalene (SW), dibenzo(a , h)anthracene (S), and pyrene (O) as the prevailing compounds. PCA suggested the predominance of particular groups related to SW (LMW-PAH), S (HMW-PAH), and O (pyrene and fluoranthene). Furthermore, one sample of O presented a high PAH bioavailability as shown through the BAF, with emphasis on pyrene (BAF = 26.8). The RQ showed a low to moderate range in SW and S; hence, in-depth information about the possible toxic effect in organisms of this region is required. • Low levels of PAH were determined in three compartments from tropical estuary, Brazil. • Diagnostic ratios showed a mixture of sources, with prevalence of pyrogenic source. • PCA presented a PAH distribution in particular groups to water, sediment, and oysters. • The risk quotient showed a range from low to moderate in surface water and sediments. • PAH of 4 rings, mainly pyrene, were found due bioaccumulation in the oyster samples. Quantitative data on the gut proportions of the recently-described black-headed marmoset ( Callithrix nigriceps) from western Brazilian Amazonian are presented. Like other marmosets, C. nigriceps exhibits a relatively large caecum and colon associated with adaptations for gummivory. The degree of gut specialisation recorded is greater than that for any other platyrrhine for which quantitative data are available. Gum was found in the stomach contents of all four individuals examined, although the fruit/seeds of as many as seven different plant taxa were also encountered, in addition to insects of six different orders. Gut proportions of two Saguinus labiatus from the same region were typical of the more frugivorous tamarins, and stomach contents included only fruit and insects. However, this kind of cultivation seems to be contributing to heavy infestations of Bemisia tabaci Mediterranean cryptic species (MED) in cucumbers, which is indeed related to the recent detection of tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) in this crop. Thus, the present study investigated the settling preference of B. tabaci Middle east Asia-Minor 1 (MEAM1) and MED cryptic species for cucumber, bell pepper, and tomato plants cultivated in the same area. In addition, the settling preference and biological performance of MEAM1 and MED on representative cucumber commercial cultivars were also compared. Cucumber was the most preferred host when compared with tomato and bell pepper for both whiteflies, which were also capable of establishing and ovipositioning in all cucumber cultivars tested. The Mediterranean species showed better adaptability than MEAM1 in almost all cucumber cultivars tested, by showing a better capacity of survival and resulting in a more significant number of adults. When evaluating cultivars, 'Aodai' stood out for presenting high MEAM1 nymph mortality, showing that it may be a good option to be implemented in areas with the absence of MED. In contrast, no cultivars were potentially satisfactory for use in the management of MED, reinforcing the need to develop specific management strategies directed for this cryptic whitefly species. • Cucumber is more preferred by both whiteflies when compared with tomato and bell pepper. • Both Whiteflies are capable to settle in and oviposit in all cucumber cultivars. • Mediterranean whiteflies had a better performance in almost all cucumber cultivars. • Among all tested cultivars, only 'Aodai' showed the potential to decrease MEAM1 population. • None of the tested cultivars were satisfactory for decrease MED population.
