Background: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has spread across Brazil with varying incidence rates depending on the affected areas. Due to cocirculation of arboviruses and overlapping disease symptoms, CHIKV infection may be underdiagnosed. To understand the lack of CHIKV epidemics in São José do Rio Preto (SJdRP), São Paulo (SP), Brazil, we evaluated viral circulation by investigating anti-CHIKV IgG seroconversion in a prospective study of asymptomatic individuals and detecting anti-CHIKV IgM in individuals suspected of dengue infection, as well as CHIKV presence in Aedes mosquitoes. The opportunity to assess two different groups (symptomatic and asymptomatic) exposed at the same geographic region aimed to broaden the possibility of identifying the viral circulation, which had been previously considered absent. Methodology/principal findings: Based on a prospective population study model and demographic characteristics (sex and age), we analyzed the anti-CHIKV IgG seroconversion rate in 341 subjects by ELISA over four years. The seroprevalence increased from 0.35% in the first year to 2.3% after 3 years of follow-up. Additionally, we investigated 497 samples from a blood panel collected from dengue-suspected individuals during the 2019 dengue outbreak in SJdRP. In total, 4.4% were positive for anti-CHIKV IgM, and 8.6% were positive for IgG. To exclude alphavirus cross-reactivity, we evaluated the presence of anti-Mayaro virus (MAYV) IgG by ELISA, and the positivity rate was 0.3% in the population study and 0.8% in the blood panel samples. In CHIKV and MAYV plaque reduction neutralization tests (PRNTs), the positivity rate for CHIKV-neutralizing antibodies in these ELISA-positive samples was 46.7%, while no MAYV-neutralizing antibodies were detected. Genomic sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed CHIKV genotype ECSA in São José do Rio Preto, SP. Finally, mosquitoes collected to complement human surveillance revealed CHIKV positivity of 2.76% of A. aegypti and 9.09% of A. albopictus (although it was far less abundant than A. aegypti) by RT–qPCR. Conclusions/significance: Our data suggest cryptic CHIKV circulation in SJdRP detected by continual active surveillance. These low levels, but increasing, of viral circulation highlight the possibility of CHIKV outbreaks, as there is a large naïve population. Improved knowledge of the epidemiological situation might aid in outbreaks prevention. Author summary: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) circulation has been causing large epidemics throughout the tropics and subtropics, affecting the quality of life of the global population. Additionally, the asymptomatic or subclinical case numbers are unclear due to a paucity of epidemiological studies. Since 2013, CHIKV epidemics have been spreading in the Americas, and more than 900,000 CHIKV infection cases were confirmed in Brazil in 2020. In São José do Rio Preto (SJdRP), only 41 cases of CHIKV infection were confirmed from 2015–2020, according to official bulletins. In the same period, our study revealed seven participants among 340 (2.05%) who seroconverted to anti-CHIKV IgG, while in a blood panel collected during a dengue outbreak, 22 samples among 497 (4.42%) had anti-CHIKV IgM. These results demonstrate that the cryptic CHIKV circulation in SJdRP and the high percentage of naive individuals could represent an imminent risk of outbreaks. Background: One of the three main targets of the World Health Organization (WHO) End TB Strategy (2015-2035) is that no tuberculosis (TB) patients or their households face catastrophic costs (defined as exceeding 20% of the annual household income) because of the disease. Our study seeks to determine, as a baseline, the magnitude and main drivers of the costs associated with TB disease for patients and their households and to monitor the proportion of households experiencing catastrophic costs in Brazil. Methods: A national cross-sectional cluster-based survey was conducted in Brazil in 2019-2021 following WHO methodology. TB patients of all ages and types of TB were eligible for the survey. Adult TB patients and guardians of minors (<18 years old) were interviewed once about costs, time loss, coping measures, income, household expenses, and asset ownership. Total costs, including indirect costs measured as reported household income change, were expressed as a percentage of annual household income. We used descriptive statistics to analyze the cost drivers and multivariate logistic regression to determine factors associated with catastrophic costs. Results: We interviewed 603 patients, including 538 (89%) with drug-sensitive (DS) and 65 (11%) with drug-resistant (DR) TB. Of 603 affected households, 48.1% (95%CI: 43–53.2) experienced costs above 20% of their annual household income during their TB episode. The proportion was 44.4% and 78.5% among patients with DS- and DR-TB, respectively. On average, patients incurred costs of US$1573 (95%CI: 1361.8–1785.0) per TB episode, including pre-diagnosis and post-diagnosis expenses. Key cost drivers were post-diagnosis nutritional supplements (US$317.6, 95%CI: 232.7–402.6) followed by medical costs (US$85.5, 95%CI: 54.3–116.5) and costs of travel for clinic visits during treatment (US$79.2, 95%CI: 61.9–96.5). In multivariate analysis, predictors of catastrophic costs included positive HIV status (aOR = 3.0, 95%CI:1.1–8.6) and self-employment (aOR = 2.7, 95%CI:1.1–6.5); high education was a protective factor (aOR = 0.1, 95%CI:0.0–0.9). Conclusions: Although the services offered to patients with TB are free of charge in the Brazilian public health sector, the availability of free diagnosis and treatment services does not alleviate patients' financial burden related to accessing TB care. The study allowed us to identify the costs incurred by patients and suggest actions to mitigate their suffering. In addition, this study established a baseline for monitoring catastrophic costs and fostering a national policy to reduce the costs to patients for TB care in Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The global surge in urbanization and population growth has led to a significant increase in municipal solid waste generation, posing a considerable challenge in identifying suitable landfill sites. This study proposes a novel framework that enhances landfill site monitoring and assessment by combining GIS-based hierarchical analytical processes with a fuzzy inference system (FIS). The study employs a systematic approach involving phases such as feature selection, spatial analysis, criteria weighting, FIS building, and a case study conducted in São Paulo State, Brazil. The proposed framework effectively assesses landfill suitability and offers practical recommendations for landfill management and future site selection. This framework provides actionable recommendations for landfill monitoring and assessment, supporting landfill management while minimizing environmental and social impacts. It offers a comprehensive approach to landfill assessment, enhancing the sustainability of waste management practices. Further research can improve the proposed framework by refining feature selection and incorporating real-time data for continuous monitoring. Additionally, exploring the integration of emerging technologies, such as remote sensing and artificial intelligence, can further enhance landfill site monitoring and assessment. Rainfall is one of the primary triggers for many geological and hydrological natural disasters. While the geological events are related to mass movements in land collapse due to waterlogging, the hydrological ones are usually assigned to runoff or flooding. Studies in the literature propose predicting mass movement events as a function of accumulated rainfall levels recorded at distinct periods. According to these approaches, a two‐dimensional rainfall levels feature space is segmented into the occurrence and non‐occurrence decision regions by an empirical critical curve (CC). Although this scheme may easily be extended to other purposes and applications, studies in the literature need to discuss its use for flooding prediction. In light of this motivation, the present study is unfolded in (1) verifying that defining CCs in the rainfall levels feature space is a practical approach for flooding prediction and (2) analyzing how geospatial components interact with rainfall levels and flooding prediction. A database containing the rainfall levels recorded for flooding and non‐flooding events in São Paulo city, Brazil, regarding the period 2015–2016, was considered in this study. The results indicate good accuracy for flooding prediction using only partial rain, which can be improved by adding physical characteristics of the flooding locations, demonstrating a direct correlation with spatial interactions, and rainfall levels. The Neogene strata of the Solimões Formation (northern Brazil) have revealed an astonishing diversity of extinct caviomorph rodents. The main exposures of this formation are found along the Juruá, Acre, and Purus rivers, and some road cuts in the State of Acre. In this paper, we reported a new locality containing a rodent assemblage. The outcrop (Coqueiro locality) is located in the Envira River, central region of State of Acre, Brazil. During fieldwork in 2010 and 2019, several isolated cheek teeth and bones of mammals were recovered in conglomeratic levels from this locality. Here, we described specimens assigned to Cardiatherium sp. (Caviidae: Hydrochoerinae), Potamarchus sp. and cf. Pseudopotamarchus (Dinomyidae: Potamarchinae), and Neoepiblema sp. (Neoepiblemidae). The locality is not yet dated by radiometric methods but based on the biostratigraphic information of the taxa here reported, we suggest that the fossil-bearing levels of this locality were deposited during the Late Miocene. Norovirus is a major cause of acute diarrheal disease (ADD) outbreaks worldwide. In the present study, we investigated an ADD outbreak caused by norovirus in several municipalities of Santa Catarina state during the summer season, southern Brazil in 2023. As of the 10th epidemiological week of 2023, approximately 87 000 ADD cases were reported, with the capital, Florianópolis, recording the highest number of cases throughout the weeks. By using RT‐qPCR and sequencing, we detected 10 different genotypes, from both genogroups (G) I and II. Some rare genotypes were also identified. Additionally, rotavirus and human adenovirus were sporadically detected among the ADD cases. Several features of the outbreak suggest that sewage‐contaminated water could played a role in the surge of ADD cases. Storm events in Santa Catarina state that preceded the outbreak likely increased the discharge of contaminated wastewater and stormwater into water bodies, such as rivers and beaches during a high touristic season in the state. Climate change‐induced extreme weather events, including intensified rainfall and frequent floods, can disturb healthcare and sanitation systems. Implementing public policies for effective sanitation, particularly during peak times, is crucial to maintain environmental equilibrium and counter marine pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human activity directly or indirectly causes climate change, promoting changes in the composition of the atmosphere. This change is beyond the variation of the natural climate. In this manner, climate change could create an environmental pressure which is enough to trigger new fungal diseases. In addition to climate alterations, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has also been associated with the emergence of fungal pathogens. Fungi showed that an inability to grow at high temperatures limits the capacity of fungi to infect mammals. However, fungi can develop thermotolerance, gradually adapting to rising temperatures due to climate change, and generating a greater number of disease-causing organisms. In the present study, we reported the detection and identification of Candida palmioleophila isolates recovered from raw sewage samples in Niteroi city, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, during a monitoring program for measuring SARS-CoV-2 presence and concentration. Using polyphasic taxonomy to identify the species and evaluating some virulence aspects of this species, such as biofilm formation and extracellular enzyme production, our data highlight this species as a possible emerging pathogen in Brazil, especially in the pandemic context. The Amazonian region covers a significant part of the South American continent and harbors outstanding biodiversity. However, much of its history is still unknown. This situation has begun to change with paleontological field efforts over the last decades, which have been proving that fossils can be common in this region. Despite their great current species richness and abundance in the area today, marsupials have a sparse fossil record, restricted to a few specimens from handful Cenozoic Amazonian localities. Here we present new records of fossil marsupial teeth from the Solimões Formation (lower Eocene-Pliocene), on the Juruá and Envira riverbanks (Acre, Northwestern Brazil). The localities investigated yield at least four distinct didelphid didelphimorphians at PRE 06 (Ponto Rio Envira: Marmosini 'Marmosa sp., Didelphis cf. D. solimoensis, Thylamys' colombianus, plus unidentified didelphids), and two paucituberculatans from the Juruá River localities (Ponto Rio Juruá: the palaeothentid Palaeothentinae indet. at PRJ 25 and PRJ 33', and Abderitidae indet. from PRJ 33). In agreement with the associated mammalian faunas, most of the didelphids, except for Thylamys' colombianus from PRE 06, indicate a ('early) Late Miocene age for this locality. Conversely, the abderitid specimens found in situ at PRJ 33 would match a Middle Miocene age. The palaeothentids found at PRJ 25 and PRJ 33' localities cannot be considered for biostratigraphic inferences, since they were found outside a stratigraphic context. Nevertheless, these paucituberculatans considerably add to our knowledge, as they are the first ever recorded in Brazilian Amazonia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the onset of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19 pandemic, concern arose for those who might be at higher risk of a worse COVID-19 prognosis, such as those with cystic fibrosis (CF). In this context, we evaluated the features of hospitalized patients with CF due to severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) in Brazil and we also performed a systematic review including all the studies published from the beginning of the first case of COVID-19 (17 November 2019) to the date of this search (23 May 2022) which included, concomitantly, patients with CF and COVID-19 in the worldwide population. In our Brazilian data, we evaluated the period from December 2019 to March 2022, and we included 33 demographical and clinical patients' features. We classified the patients into groups: (G1) SARI due to another viral infection than severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (23; 5.4%), (G2) SARI due to an unknown etiological agent (286; 67.1%), and (G3) SARI due to SARS-CoV-2 infection (117; 27.5%). The individuals in G3 tended to be older, especially over 50 years old, and presented a higher prevalence of dyspnea, peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) <95%, and cardiopathy. The highest prevalence for intensive care unit (ICU) treatment (52; 44.4%) and invasive mechanical ventilation (29; 24.8%) was for patients in G3. Almost half of the patients in G3 died (51; 43.6%); in contrast, none in G1 died. However, we observed 43 (15.0%) deaths in G2. In addition, 12 (4.2%) and one (0.9%) death not associated with SARI occurred, respectively, in the G2 and G3. The patients who died due to SARS-CoV-2 infection had a higher frequency of SpO2 <95% (46; 90.2%), ICU treatment (34; 66.7%), and invasive mechanical ventilation (27; 52.9%) when compared to those who recovered. The systematic review comprised a total of 31 papers published as observational studies. These studies comprised 661,386 patients in total, including children, adults, and elderly age groups. However, only 19,150 (2.9%) patients were diagnosed with CF and, from these patients, 2523 (0.4%) were diagnosed with both CF and COVID-19. It was observed that the most common outcome was the need for hospitalization (n = 322 patients with CF), and the need for oxygen support (n = 139 patients with CF). One hundred patients with CF needed intensive care units, fifty patients needed non-invasive mechanical ventilation support, and only three patients were described as receiving invasive mechanical ventilation support. Deaths were described in 38 patients with CF. Importantly, lung-transplanted patients with CF represented an increased risk of death in one publication; in accordance, another study described that lung transplantation and moderate to severe lung disease were independent risk factors for severe outcomes after SARS-CoV-2 infection. In contrast with the literature, in conclusion, Brazilian patients in G3 presented a severe phenotype, even though most of the other studies did not observe worse outcomes in patients with CF and COVID-19. Statement of problem. Brazilian guidelines establish a set of parameters to classify forest regeneration stages, but there are no criteria or evidence for prioritizing key indicators. Purpose. This study performed a comparative analysis between phytosociological parameters to verify the hypothesis that there is a difference in their explanatory power of the forest regeneration stages. Consequently, it shows the need to prioritize key indicators for classifying forest regeneration stages. Material and methods. The analyzes were carried out using a database of the Floristic Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil, composed of 177 sampling units of subtropical Atlantic forest (Mixed Ombrophilous Forest) characterized according to 12 quantitative and qualitative phytosociological parameters. Several statistical tests were performed to analyze the explanatory ability of the phytosociological parameters. Such process includes tests for multivariate ordering, principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis (FDA and QDA), exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). Afterward, is provided a ranking regarding the analyzed indicators based on their usefulness to separate forest regeneration stages, measured in terms of classification accuracy according to the QUEST (Quick Unbiased Efficient Statistical) algorithm. The hypothesis was verified with two-way tests at a significance level (α) equal to 0.05, for a test power (1-β) of 0.8 and a minimum detectable effect of medium size (ρ = 0.3). Results. Statistical significance tests confirmed the research hypothesis. Regarding both the qualitative and quantitative variables, the ranking resulting from the discriminant analysis provided the best accuracy (85.3%). In decreasing priority order, was defined the following parameter order: basal area, number of individuals and species, Shannon diversity index, diameter at breast height, total height, stem height, leaf litter, canopy structure, canopy cover, the density of lianas and epiphytes. Conclusions. The phytosociological parameters have statistically different explanatory power (p < 0.0001), which should be considered when classifying forest regeneration stages. Practical implications. The presented results and conclusions should substantially impact the guidelines and decision-making process for cutting down the forest/native vegetation and applicable compensation measures, which are currently only based on the forest regeneration stages. Stingless bees, or simply meliponines, are a large group of bees (about 550 described species), comprising the tribe Meliponini. They belong in the family Apidae, and are closely related to Apis mellifera. Scaptotrigona affinis postica Latreille, 1807 from northeast of Brazil is popularly known as "tubi" in Maranhão State. Flavones di-C-glycosides, and the pyrrolizidine alkaloid 3-methoxy-7-(2-methylbutyryl)-9-echimidinyl retronecine (7) were reported previously in propolis from S. postica and detected only in samples collected in October, November and December. The presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides were reported in honey and pollen. In the present study, the preparative liquid chromatography in reversed-phase column from ethanolic extract of propolis allowed the separation of fractions 40AEP and 40 MEP, which were analyzed by LC-MS. Many pyrrolizidine alkaloids, among them, lithosenine (14), lithosenine arabinoside (19), 7-angeloyl-9-(2,3- dihydroxybutyryl) retronecine (1), 7-(2- methylbutyryl) retronecine (3), 9-sarracinoyl retronecine (13) and viridinatine (8), besides the flavonoids schaftoside (15), aromadendrin-7-O-methyl ether (12), 7- methoxy-5,6,3',4',5',6'-hexahydroxy-flavone-3-O-glucuronide (11), mangiferin (10) and mangiferin-O-methyl ether (17) were detected in these fractions. Fraction 40MEP showed antibacterial effect against gram positive and gram negative bacterial pathogens with MIC ranging from 62.5 μg/mL to 200 μg/mL, while fractions 40AEP and 40MEP showed antimicrobial activity against gram negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli D31- streptomycin resistant. The cells were treated with 40MEP and 40AEP at a concentration of 200 μg/mL and were not observed statistical difference between treated and untreated cells. Propolis from Scaptotrigona aff. postica bees exhibited antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli D31- streptomycin resistant. Preparative liquid chromatography in reversed-phase column allowed the separation of fractions rich in alkaloids and flavonoids. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids and flavonoids were detected as the main constituents. Flavones di-C-glycosides and flavones C-glycosides were reported in propolis. Cell viability demonstrated that pyrrolizidine alkaloids did not cause cytotoxicity in epithelial cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The disease burden of yellow fever virus infection (YFV) is quite high in the tropics where vaccination coverage is low. To date, vaccination is the most effective control strategy to mitigate and eliminate the burden of YF disease. The licensed YF vaccines are safe and effective and serious adverse events are rare. Herein, we report three cases of neurological syndrome, compatible with meningoencephalitis following 17DD vaccination. In all cases, YFV-specific IgM antibodies were detected in the cerebrospinal fluid. Our observations confirm the development of YF vaccine-associated neurotropic disease, a rare serious adverse event, from which all three patients have fully recovered without any long-term sequelae. This report reinforces the need for awareness among health professionals to recognize and effectively manage such events in a timely manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patients with Down syndrome (DS) are more affected by the Coronavirus Disease (COVID)-19 pandemic when compared with other populations. Therefore, the primary aim of our study was to report the death (case fatality rate) from SARS-CoV-2 infection in Brazilian hospitalized patients with DS from 03 January 2020 to 04 April 2021. The secondary objectives were (i) to compare the features of patients with DS and positive for COVID-19 (G1) to those with DS and with a severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) from other etiological factors (G2) to tease apart the unique influence of COVID-19, and (ii) to compare the features of patients with DS and positive for COVID-19 to those without DS, but positive for COVID-19 (G3) to tease apart the unique influence of DS. We obtained the markers for demographic profile, clinical symptoms, comorbidities, and the clinical features for SARI evolution during hospitalization in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil from a Brazilian open-access database. The data were compared between (i) G1 [1619 (0.4%) patients] and G2 [1431 (0.4%) patients]; and between (ii) G1 and G3 [222,181 (64.8%) patients]. The case fatality rate was higher in patients with DS and COVID-19 (G1: 39.2%), followed by individuals from G2 (18.1%) and G3 (14.0%). Patients from G1, when compared to G2, were older (≥ 25 years of age), presented more clinical symptoms related to severe illness and comorbidities, needed intensive care unit (ICU) treatment and non-invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) more frequently, and presented a nearly two fold-increased chance of death (OR = 2.92 [95% CI 2.44–3.50]). Patients from G1, when compared to G3, were younger (< 24 years of age), more prone to nosocomial infection, presented an increased chance for clinical symptoms related to a more severe illness; frequently needed ICU treatment, and invasive and non-invasive MV, and raised almost a three fold-increased chance of death (OR = 3.96 [95% CI 3.60–4.41]). The high case fatality rate in G1 was associated with older age (≥ 25 years of age), presence of clinical symptoms, and comorbidities, such as obesity, related to a more severe clinical condition. Unvaccinated patients with DS affected by COVID-19 had a high case fatality rate, and these patients had a different profile for comorbidities, clinical symptoms, and treatment (such as the need for ICU and MV) when compared with other study populations. The occurrence of forest fires has increased significantly in recent years across the planet. Events of this nature have resulted in the leveraging of new automated methodologies to identify and map burned areas. In this paper, we introduce a unified data-driven framework capable of mapping areas damaged by fire by integrating time series of remotely sensed multispectral images, statistical modeling, and unsupervised classification. We collect and analyze multiple remote-sensing images acquired by the Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Terra satellites between August–October 2020, validating our proposal with three case studies in Brazil and Bolivia whose affected regions have suffered from recurrent forest fires. Besides providing less noisy mappings, our methodology outperforms other evaluated methods in terms of average scores of 90%, 0.71, and 0.65 for overall accuracy, F1-score, and kappa coefficient, respectively. • Dengue is one of the most common zoonoses in Latin America (LATAM). • From 2023 to 2024 an increase of more than 20% in suspected cases occurred in Brazil. • In 2024, in Brazil, vulnerable people were more likely to be suspected cases. • In 2024, Brazil represented more than half of the suspected cases of dengue in LATAM. To compare the number of suspected cases, severe cases, and deaths of dengue in 2023 and 2024 in Brazil and Latin America; and to describe its epidemiological profile. Observational study. The data regarding dengue was retrieved from the Brazilian Ministry of Health website. The Chi-square test was used to compare the proportion of dengue cases in 2023 and 2024 according to gender, race, and age range. The odds ratio and the 95% confidence intervals were used to describe the data. The Spearman correlation test was used to compare the number of suspected cases, severe cases, and deaths of dengue with the number of distributed vaccines against dengue. Dengue is one of the most common zoonoses in Latin America. In 2023, Brazil registered a total of 1,658,814 suspected cases of dengue with 1094 deaths. For 2024, a total of 1,978,372 suspected cases of dengue were reported only until the 11th epidemiological week, with 656 deaths. When comparing dengue cases reported in 2024 and 2023, there is an increase in suspected cases, with 20% more cases reported during the first 11 epidemiological weeks of 2024 than in the entire 52 epidemiological weeks of 2023. At the same time, in 2024, the Pan American Health Organization reported suspected cases in 20 Latin American countries, with 3073 cases of severe dengue and 1187 deaths. In Brazil, a different racial profile for dengue was described since Black people [OR = 1.56 (95% CI = 1.54-1.57)], Mixed individuals [OR = 1.36 (95% CI = 1.35-1.37), and Indigenous peoples [OR = 1.77 (95% CI = 1.70-1.85)] were more likely to be suspected cases of dengue in 2024 compared to 2023. Also, a positive correlation between the distributed vaccines with deaths due to dengue and the number of severe cases was described. Brazil was responsible for more than 50% of suspected cases and deaths from dengue compared to the other Latin American countries in 2024. Considering the imminence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants and COVID-19 vaccine availability, it is essential to understand the impact of the disease on the most vulnerable groups and those at risk of death from the disease. To this end, the odds ratio (OR) for mortality and hospitalization was calculated for different groups of patients by applying an adjusted logistic regression model based on the following variables of interest: gender, booster vaccination, age group, and comorbidity occurrence. A massive number of data were extracted and compiled from official Brazilian government resources, which include all reported cases of hospitalizations and deaths associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Brazil during the "wave" of the Omicron variant (BA.1 substrain). Males (1.242; 95% CI 1.196–1.290) aged 60–79 (3.348; 95% CI 3.050–3.674) and 80 years or older (5.453; 95% CI 4.966–5.989), and hospitalized patients with comorbidities (1.418; 95% CI 1.355–1.483), were more likely to die. There was a reduction in the risk of death (0.907; 95% CI 0.866–0.951) among patients who had received the third dose of the anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (booster). Additionally, this big data investigation has found statistical evidence that vaccination can support mitigation plans concerning the current scenario of COVID-19 in Brazil since the Omicron variant and its substrains are now prevalent across the entire country. Background: The COVID-19 is a significant public health issue, and monitoring confirmed cases and deaths is an essential epidemiologic tool. We evaluated the features in Brazilian hospitalized patients due to severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. We grouped the patients into the following categories: Influenza virus infection (G1), other respiratory viruses' infection (G2), other known etiologic agents (G3), SARS-CoV-2 infection (patients with COVID-19, G4), and undefined etiological agent (G5). Methods: We performed an epidemiological study using data from DataSUS (https://opendatasus.saude.gov.br/) from December 2019 to October 2021. The dataset included Brazilian hospitalized patients due to SARI. We considered the clinical evolution of the patients with SARI during the COVID-19 pandemic according to the SARI patient groups as the outcome. We performed the multivariate statistical analysis using logistic regression, and we adopted an Alpha error of 0.05. Results: A total of 2,740,272 patients were hospitalized due to SARI in Brazil, being the São Paulo state responsible formost of the cases [802,367 (29.3%)].Most of the patients were male (1,495,416; 54.6%), aged between 25 and 60 years (1,269,398; 46.3%), and were White (1,105,123; 49.8%). A total of 1,577,279 (68.3%) patients recovered from SARI, whereas 701,607 (30.4%) died due to SARI, and 30,551 (1.3%) did not have their deaths related to SARI. A major part of the patients was grouped in G4 (1,817,098; 66.3%) and G5 (896,207; 32.7%). The other groups account for <1% of our sample [G1: 3,474 (0.1%), G2: 16,627 (0.6%), and G3: 6,866 (0.3%)]. The deaths related to SARI were more frequent in G4 (574,887; 34.7%); however, the deaths not related to SARI were more frequent among the patients categorized into the G3 (1,339; 21.3%) and G5 (25,829; 4.1%). In the multivariate analysis, the main predictors to classify the patients in the G5 when compared with G4 or G1-G4 were female sex, younger age, Black race, low educational level, rural place of residence, and the use of antiviral to treat the clinical signs. Furthermore, several features predict the risk of death by SARI, such as older age, race (Black, Indigenous, and multiracial background), low educational level, residence in a flu outbreak region, need for intensive care unit, and need for mechanical ventilatory support. Conclusions: The possible COVID-19 underreporting (G5) might be associated with an enhanced mortality rate, more evident in distinct social groups. In addition, the patients' features are unequal between the patients' groups and can be used to determine the risk of possible COVID-19 underreporting in our population. Patients with a higher risk of death had a different epidemiological profile when compared with patients who recovered from SARI, like older age, Black, Indigenous, and multiracial background races, low educational level, residence in a flu outbreak region, need for intensive care unit and need for mechanical ventilatory support. The economic and environmental impacts of wildfires have leveraged the development of new technologies to prevent and reduce the occurrence of these devastating events. Indeed, identifying and mapping fire-susceptible areas arise as critical tasks, not only to pave the way for rapid responses to attenuate the fire spreading, but also to support emergency evacuation plans for the families affected by fire-related tragedies. Aiming at simultaneously mapping and measuring the risk of fires in the forest areas of Brazil's Amazon, in this paper we combine multitemporal remote sensing, derivative spectral indices, and anomaly detection into a fully unsupervised methodology. We focus our analysis on recent forest fire events that occurred in the Brazilian Amazon by exploring multitemporal images acquired by both Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager and Modis sensors. We experimentally confirm that the current methodology is capable of predicting fire outbreaks immediately at posterior instants, which attests to the operational performance and applicability of our approach to preventing and mitigating the impact of fires in Brazilian forest regions. Ocotea minarum (Nees & Mart.) Mez., a native species of Brazil, is used in the treatment of infections and oxidative stress; however, there is no scientific evidence of its toxicological characteristics. We assessed the cytotoxicity, mutagenic activity, and acute oral toxicity of the aqueous extract isolated from O. minarum leaves. The cytotoxicity of this extract was evaluated in tumour and non-tumour cell lines, while the Ames test with a Salmonella Typhimurium was used to determine the mutagenic activity. Wistar rats received a single 2 g/kg dose as part of an LD50 toxicity assessment. Our results showed that the aqueous extract of O. minarum leaves did not present cytotoxic and mutagenic properties and was not toxic, with an LD50 greater than 2 g/kg. Therefore, the O. minarum extracts are pharmacologically safe and can continue to be investigated for the development of new drugs and herbal medicines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The treatment of most severe COVID-19 patients included the large-scale use of sedatives and analgesics–possibly in higher doses than usual–which was reported in the literature. The use of drugs that decrease mortality is necessary and opioids are important agents in procedures such as orotracheal intubation. However, these drugs seem to have been overestimated in the COVID-19 pandemic. We performed a review of the PubMed-Medline database to evaluate the use of opioids during this period. The following descriptors were used to enhance the search for papers: "Opioids", "COVID-19," "COVID-19 pandemic," "SARS-CoV-2," "Opioid use disorder," "Opioid dependence" and the names of the drugs used. We also evaluated the distribution of COVID-19 patients in Brazil and the applicability of opioids in our country during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Several positive points were found in the use of opioids in the COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, they can be used for analgesia in orotracheal intubation, for chronic pain management, and as coadjutant in the management of acute intensification of pain. However, high doses of opioids might exacerbate the respiratory depression found in COVID-19 patients, their chronic use can trigger opioid tolerance and the higher doses used during the pandemic might result in greater adverse effects. Unfortunately, the pandemic also affected individuals with opioid use disorder, not only those individuals are at higher risk of mortality, hospitalization and need for ventilatory support, but measures taken to decrease the SARS-CoV-2 spread such as social isolation, might negatively affect the treatment for opioid use disorder. In Brazil, only morphine, remifentanil and fentanyl are available in the basic health care system for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. Out of the 5,273,598 opioid units used in this period all over the country, morphine, fentanyl, and remifentanil, accounted for, respectively, 559,270 (10.6%), 4,624,328 (87.6%), and 90,000 (1.8%) units. Many Brazilian regions with high number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 had few units of opioids available, as the Southeast region, with a 0.23 units of opioids per confirmed COVID-19 case, and the South region, with 0.05 units. In the COVID-19 pandemic scenario, positive points related to opioids were mainly the occurrence of analgesia, to facilitate intubation and their use as coadjutants in the management of acute intensification of pain, whereas the negative points were indiscriminate use, the presence of human immunosuppressor response and increased adverse effects due to higher doses of the drug. Conclusion: The importance of rational and individualized use of analgesic hypnotics and sedative anesthetics should be considered at all times, especially in situations of high demand such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Urban Structure Types (USTs) stand for areas with homogeneous appearance over the urban matrix. The use of spatial metrics rises as a convenient alternative to quantify the homogeneity of areas on a specific scale. Remote sensing imagery is largely used to assess and study the urban environment, and its classification is a way to recreate the Earth's surface digitally, both natural and urban spaces. This study proposes a method for city-scale UST mapping using remote sensing images as the unique source of information. Such a proposal comprehends the classification of images that express spatial metrics derived from previous land use and land cover (LULC) classification. We carried two case studies to assess the proposed method under different image resolutions and urban complexity conditions. For this purpose, Landsat-8 OLI and Sentinel-2 MSI images acquired from different cities in Brazil are submitted to the proposed method. An alternative object-based image classification method is included as a comparison baseline. The proposed method shows efficiency in the UST mapping process, which is highly influenced by the neighborhood size considered over the process. Luminescence characteristics of quartz and feldspar allow to discriminate sediments from different source areas. Particularly, sensitivity of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) signals of quartz and infrared‐stimulated luminescence (IRSL) of feldspar from Quaternary sediments has been used for provenance analysis. These properties change due to source area denudation rates and sediment reworking, which drive the number of burial irradiation‐solar exposure cycles of sediment grains in surface systems. Here, we use for the first time a similar approach to interpret the geomorphic conditions of source areas of Silurian to Triassic siliciclastic sedimentary units of the intracratonic Parnaíba Basin in northeast Brazil. Luminescence measurements were performed on sand grains, and statistical tests were applied to evaluate differences in luminescence properties within and across stratigraphic units. We explored the position of well‐known "110°C" (TL110) and "325°C" (TL325) TL peaks of quartz as proxies to discriminate stratigraphic units with similar lithological assemblages. OSL and TL sensitivities as well as the dominance of the so‐called fast OSL component increase from Silurian to Triassic sedimentary units, while the IRSL sensitivity decreases towards younger stratigraphic units. These patterns point to source areas with decreasing denudation rate and higher sediment recycling over basin filling time, leading to decreasing feldspar concentration and quartz luminescence sensitisation. Major changes in luminescence properties coincide with regional unconformities. This is attributed to physical landscape changes leading to shifts in the relief of source areas and basin sediment recycling. The TL110 peak position is similar across stratigraphic units, but the TL325 peak position has significant variation, with values between 324°C and 334°C, allowing its use for stratigraphic discrimination. Changes in OSL and TL characteristics of quartz sediment grains are preserved during long‐term burial (108 Ma), representing a new tool for interpreting basin evolution and to perform stratigraphic analysis of ancient siliciclastic successions. One of the main problems in the peanut production process is to identify the pod maturity stage. Peanut plants have indeterminate growth, which leads to a high pod maturity variability within the same plant. Moreover, the actual method of determining maturity is destructive and highly subjectivity, which does not represent the overall variability in the field. Hence, the main goal of this study was to verify the possibility to estimate peanut maturity and its in-field variability using an alternative non-destructive method based on orbital remote sensing. High-resolution satellite images (~ 3 m) were obtained from the PlanetScope platform for two commercial peanut fields in São Paulo state, Brazil, during the reproductive stage of the peanut crop (89 to 118 days after sowing—DAS). The fields were divided into 54 plots (30 × 30 m). The maturity was obtained using the Hull Scrape method. All Vegetation Indices (VIs) used showed a high Pearson correlation (p < 0.001) between peanut maturity and the VIs, with values decreasing as maturity increased. Non-Linear Index (NLI) values from 0.561 to 0.465 suggested that pods reached greater maturity than 74% (inflection point). The results found in this study indicated a great potential to use high-resolution satellite images to predict peanut maturity variability in commercial field. In addition, the proposed method contributes to monitoring the dynamics spatio-temporal of maturity progression, allowing for more accurate in-season and inversion management strategies in peanut. Background To design better measures to contain the Covid-19 epidemics, it is relevant to know whether socioeconomic factors are associated with a higher risk of death by Covid-19. This work estimates the effects of individual socioeconomic characteristics on the risk of death by Covid-19. Methods Logistic models were estimated to assess the effect of socioeconomic characteristics (income, race/ethnicity, schooling, occupation and economic activity) on the risk of death from Covid-19. For this purpose, Covid-19 individual death records in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil were combined with the Annual Register of Social Information, which contains socioeconomic information about formal workers. Findings Workers employed in establishments in the health and public safety sectors present a risk of dying 2.46 and 2.25 times higher than those employed in other activities. Non-white people, men, and those who work in the Metropolitan Region are also more likely to die from Covid-19. People with higher education are 44% less likely to die from the disease. Conclusions Some population groups are more vulnerable to the Covid-19 pandemic and individual socioeconomic conditions play a relevant role in the probability of death by the disease. Over the past decades, the Southeast Atlantic Forest in Paraíba do Sul River Valley has suffered intense deforestation and human disturbances. Due to the Atlantic Forest biodiversity and the economic relevance of such a region in Brazil, spatial-temporal analyses are of crucial importance to protect the forest, as well as to support economic decision-making of public and private agents. In this context, the use of change detection techniques applied to remote sensing imagery arises as a powerful tool to track and map the Earth's surface transformations. Therefore, this work investigates the effectiveness and practical feasibility of distinct unsupervised change detection approaches when they are applied to reveal the spatial-temporal dynamics in Paraíba do Sul River Valley across the last four decades. Different change detection approaches such as Change Vector Analysis (CVA), a K-Means and Principal Component Analysis (PCA-KM) framework, and a Alternating Sequential Filtering (ASF) based process were taken and properly tuned to cope with Landsat image series. The analysis of the results revealed a permanent land cover change rate over the last decades. Moreover, these changes do not necessary occur in the same locations, as it was confirmed the existence of successive modifications in original coverage of the study area. Nowadays, more than half of the world's population lives in cities and this number is expected to reach 72% by 2050. In Brazil, the process of urbanization of the territory, usually rapid and unplanned, causes a myriad of environmental impacts. Urbanization makes the wealth and diversity of species decline. On the other hand, some species adapt to the anthropogenic environments because they obtain advantages of the urban matrix, using shelter or food available. Bats have an ecological plasticity that allows them to settle in forest remnants in the cities or directly in the built environment. Objective: Considering the importance of dairy farming and the negative effects of heat stress, more tolerant genotypes need to be identified. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of heat stress via temperature-humidity index (THI) and diurnal temperature variation (DTV) in the genetic evaluations for daily milk yield of Holstein dairy cattle, using random regression models. Methods: The data comprised 94,549 test-day records of 11,294 first parity Holstein cows from Brazil, collected from 1997 to 2013, and bioclimatic data (THI and DTV) from 18 weather stations. Least square linear regression models were used to determine the THI and DTV thresholds for milk yield losses caused by heat stress. In addition to the standard model (SM, without bioclimatic variables), THI and DTV were combined in various ways and tested for different days, totaling 41 models. Results: The THI and DTV thresholds for milk yield losses was THI = 74 (-0.106 kg/d/THI) and DTV = 13 (-0.045 kg/d/DTV). The model that included THI and DTV as fixed effects, considering the two-day average, presented better fit (-2logL, Akaike information criterion, and Bayesian information criterion). The estimated breeding values (EBVs) and the reliabilities of the EBVs improved when using this model. Conclusion: Sires are re-ranking when heat stress indicators are included in the model. This research explores the benefits of radar data assimilation for short-range weather forecasts in southeastern Brazil using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model's three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) system. Different data assimilation options are explored, including the cycling frequency, the number of outer loops, and the use of null-echo assimilation. Initially, four microphysics parameterizations are evaluated (Thompson, Morrison, WSM6, and WDM6). The Thompson parameterization produces the best results, while the other parameterizations generally overestimate the precipitation forecast, especially WDSM6. Additionally, the Thompson scheme tends to overestimate snow, while the Morrison scheme overestimates graupel. Regarding the data assimilation options, the results deteriorate and more spurious convection occurs when using a higher cycling frequency (i.e., 30 min instead of 60 min). The use of two outer loops produces worse precipitation forecasts than the use of one outer loop, and the null-echo assimilation is shown to be an effective way to suppress spurious convection. However, in some cases, the null-echo assimilation also removes convective clouds that are not observed by the radar and/or are still not producing rain, but have the potential to grow into an intense convective cloud with heavy rainfall. Finally, a cloud convective mask was implemented using ancillary satellite data to prevent null-echo assimilation from removing potential convective clouds. The mask was demonstrated to be beneficial in some circumstances, but it needs to be carefully evaluated in more cases to have a more robust conclusion regarding its use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Elevated D-dimer is a predictor of severity and mortality in COVID-19 patients, and heparin use during in-hospital stay has been associated with decreased mortality. COVID-19 patient autopsies have revealed thrombi in the microvasculature, suggesting that hypercoagulability is a prominent feature of organ failure in these patients. Interestingly, in COVID-19, pulmonary compliance is preserved despite severe hypoxemia corroborating the hypothesis that perfusion mismatch may play a significant role in the development of respiratory failure. Methods: We describe a series of 27 consecutive COVID-19 patients admitted to Sirio-Libanes Hospital in São Paulo-Brazil and treated with heparin in therapeutic doses tailored to clinical severity. Results: PaO2/FiO2 ratio increased significantly over the 72 h following the start of anticoagulation, from 254(±90) to 325(±80), p = 0.013, and 92% of the patients were discharged home within a median time of 11 days. There were no bleeding complications or fatal events. Discussion: Even though this uncontrolled case series does not offer absolute proof that micro thrombosis in the pulmonary circulation is the underlying mechanism of respiratory failure in COVID-19, patient's positive response to heparinization contributes to the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanism of the disease and provides valuable information for the treatment of these patients while we await the results of further prospective controlled studies. In the Parnaíba basin, northeastern Brazil, some records of basic tholeiitic magmatism have been recognized as part of large igneous provinces (LIP's). They are represented by the Mosquito basaltic flows (Triassic–Jurassic; ca. 200 Ma) that occurs in the west portion of the basin as well as the Sardinha diabases (Cretaceous; ca. 124 Ma) eastwards. The Mosquito and Sardinha magmatic rocks of the Parnaíba basin were related to the processes of distension and rupture of Pangea and Gondwana, respectively. This paper presents the petrogenesis of diabase sills that occur in the eastern portion of the basin, probably associated with the Sardinha formation. The studied rocks are mostly equigranular, medium-grained diabases. They are tholeiitic andesite-basalts and stricto sensu basalts, comprising a single Low-TiO2 (TiO2 < 2 wt%) magmatic suite here denominated as Batalha Suite. They show relative enrichment in the broad spectrum of LILE (large ion lithophile elements), HFSE (high field strength elements) and REE (rare earth elements) when compared to MORB, chondrite and primitive mantle, similar to continental flood basalts (CFB) elsewhere. This suite evolved by fractional crystallization as attested by whole-rock geochemistry, mineral chemistry, geochemical modeling and Sr–Nd isotope data. The studied Low-TiO2 basalts derived from an enriched mantle source likely to be represented by the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). The diabases are related with 16% of partial melting of either a less enriched residual garnet harzburgitic source or a more enriched residual spinel-harzburgite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: WhatsApp® is one of the most used apps in Brazil. One of its main features is the potential to overcome geographical, cultural, and socioeconomic disparities. This app is increasingly being used as a tool for mobile health (m-health) interventions; however, with regard to blood donation, scientific studies are still lacking. The recruitment, return, and loyalty of blood donors are public health challenges, especially in developing countries. Objective: To verify the effectiveness of WhatsApp as a tool to increase the return rates of blood donors (first-time and loyal donors). Methods: The study was carried out with 548 individuals who voluntarily went to a private blood bank in the city of Maringá, south of Brazil, to donate blood. The participants were divided randomly into an intervention group (IG) and a control group (CG). Four messages were created following a strategy of persuasive communication and sent using an automatic system (Bulk System) to the list of participants in the IG after they had donated blood. Results: In contrast to our expectations, after the intervention, no significant difference in the return rates was observed between the IG and the CG. Loyal donors, regardless of whether they received the messages or not, returned in higher numbers compared with the first-time and sporadic donors. Conclusion: The intervention using WhatsApp was not effective at increasing the blood donors' return rates, suggesting that the motivations of blood donors are different from those of people who are undergoing self-care interventions. • Environmental stress is an important limiting factor to dairy production in tropical regions. • The current study proposes a new measure of genetic merit for Brazilian Girolando cattle: heat stress tolerance. • The results have potential economic implications within the dairy value chain. • Mating systems management to increase production efficiency in tropical climates. Heat stress is a major challenge for dairy herds and can lead to significant production reduction, mainly in tropical climate. Differences in decreased milk production in animals is associated with genetic variation. The overall goal was to investigate the effect of heat stress in milk yield of Girolando cattle in tropical climate and to identify the most appropriate statistical approach for evaluation and selection for heat tolerance in different breed compositions of Girolando. Therefore, to quantify heat stress effects on milk yield loss in Girolando cattle, random regression models were applied on test-day milk yield records (TDMY) and weather data. In addition, different statistical models were evaluated for estimating variance components and predicting breeding values for heat stress (HS). The data comprised 648,072 TDMY of 69,431 first-lactation Girolando cows of different breed compositions, and 21,147 genotyped animals, with daily temperature and humidity measurements from weather stations closest to the tested herds, between 2000 and 2020. We used daily mean values of temperature-humidity index (THI) for the day of test and the 3 previous days as the measure of HS. Heat stress thresholds estimated for the different breed compositions of Girolando in this study were THI 80 for 1/4H, 1/2H and 5/8H; THI 78 for 3/4H animals and THI 77 for 7/8H animals. Average milk production can decrease by up to 34% due to heat stress. Estimated average heritability for TDMY regressed to the THI was 0.21, while the heritability estimated for TDMY regressed to the DIM was 0.29. A correlation of 0.55 was observed between the GEBVs of HS tolerance and GEBV milk yield. The parameters estimated in this study indicate that genomic selection for heat tolerance in dairy cattle is a step towards ensuring valuable tropical production efficiency and improving animal welfare in the face of predicted increases in heat stress events and increase tropical production efficiency. Objective: To verify the reliability of information, the sources of information used and the user opinions of the free mobile applications (apps) with nutritional information available in Brazil.Design: Descriptive, cross-sectional study.Setting: We evaluated the content about nutrition of free apps available on the App Store of iPhone 5S with software iOS 8.4.1 and on the Play Store of the Android platform, version 2.3.6. For this, we compared the nutrition information provided by the app with (i) the Brazilian Food Composition Table (TACO), of 2011; (ii) food composition table: support for nutritional decision, of 2002; and (iii) the National Study of Family Expenditure: food composition tables, of 1999. The evaluation included the description and quantity of macro- and micronutrients in foods. In addition, we evaluated the trustworthiness of information about food energy values and analysed the comments and ratings made by users.Subjects: Mobile apps related to nutrition.Results: We assessed sixteen apps for mobile devices. Considering the foods selected (a basic Brazilian food basket for the month of August 2015), the apps presented partially adequate or inadequate information about food composition (macro- and micronutrients). The adequacy of the food energy values ranged from 0 to 57·1 %. Despite this, the apps received positive ratings by users.Conclusions: The mobile apps about nutrition currently available and evaluated in the present study in Brazil are not useful for nutritional guidance because most of them are not based on reliable sources of information. Eleven non-conventional tropical fruits were evaluated regarding their nutritional value, antioxidant potential, carotenoid contents and bioaccessibility. The fruits were chosen due to their spread through the Brazilian territory: araçá-boi, jaracatiá, cambuití, seriguela, capeba, pitangatuba, pitanga, buriti, acerola, dovialis and abricó-da-praia. Results have shown that these fruits are in general, i.e. depending on the fruit, rich sources of dietary fibers and minerals, high in moisture, and low in proteins. Twelve carotenoids were analyzed by HPLC-DAD and results ranged from 0.04 to 104 μg/g wet weight. Xanthophylls stood out, being higher than carotenes for araçá-boi, seriguela, pitangatuba and dovialis. Bioaccessibility varied both between fruits and carotenoids ranging from 2 to 75%. Although the fruit matrix effect, xanthophylls were more bioaccessible than carotenes, while lycopene and γ-carotene presented the poorest bioaccessibility. The present study is fundamental to expand the knowledge about the fruit properties, carotenoids bioaccessibility and potential benefits for health, as well to preserve natural resources and encourage the intake of new fruits for human nutrition. DNA barcoding has emerged as an efficient tool for taxonomy and other biodiversity fields. The vast and speciose group of decapod crustaceans is not an exception in the current scenario and comparing short DNA fragments has enabled researchers to overcome some taxonomic impediments to help broadening knowledge on the diversity of this group of crustaceans. Brazil is considered as an important area in terms of global marine biodiversity and some regions stand out in terms of decapod fauna, such as the São Paulo coastline. Thus, the aim of this study is to obtain sequences of the mitochondrial markers (COI and 16S) for decapod crustaceans distributed at the São Paulo coastline and to test the accuracy of these markers for species identification from this region by comparing our sequences to those already present in the GenBank database. We sampled along almost the 300 km of the São Paulo coastline from estuaries to offshore islands during the development of a multidisciplinary research project that took place for 5 years. All the species were processed to obtain the DNA sequences. The diversity of the decapod fauna on the São Paulo coastline comprises at least 404 species. We were able to collect 256 of those species and sequence of at least one of the target genes from 221. By testing the accuracy of these two DNA markers as a tool for identification, we were able to check our own identifications, including new records in GenBank, spot potential mistakes in GenBank, and detect potential new species. Geopropolis is a product containing wax, plant resin, and soil particles. It is elaborated by stingless bees of tribe Meliponini. Methanol extracts of sample of geopropolis produced by Scaptotrigona postica (“mandaguari”) in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN, northeast Brazil) were analyzed for the determination of standard parameters (total phenols, total flavonoids, and radical scavenging activity) and chemical characterization by HPLC-DAD-MS/MS analysis. The sample analyzed has high contents of total phenols and flavonoids, as well as high antioxidant activity. The constituents characterized were mainly flavonols, such as quercetin methyl ethers, and methoxychalcones. Such chemical profile is similar to the composition of a green propolis from the same area of RN, which is produced by Africanized Apis mellifera, using shoot apices of Mimosa tenuiflora, popularly known as “jurema-preta.” This finding provides evidence that “mandaguari” geopropolis and honeybee propolis have the same botanical origin in RN. The sharing of a plant resin source by phylogenetically distant bees (Apinae and Meliponinae) suggests that bee genetic factors play little role in the choice of plants for resin collection and that the availability of potential botanical sources plays a decisive role. Estimating the amount of materials necessary for deploying electrical systems in buildings is a difficult task since these systems are complex and highly correlated with the design of other building systems. In Brazil, the usual method for estimating the consumption of electrical materials relies on constant rates per electrical points, incurring in large estimation errors. Furthermore, these rates can only be used in advanced project phases. This paper proposes a novel method for estimating the consumption of electrical materials, based on artificial neural networks (ANNs), by using information from early project stages. A dataset with project attributes was used to construct the ANN estimation models. In order to evaluate these new models, their estimates were compared to results from linear regression and constant rate models. Results showed that the ANN models have better performance when compared to other methods, supporting that ANNs are well suited for nonlinear and multidimensional problems. This investigation, therefore, supports that the method proposed could also be used by construction companies for estimating the consumption of other materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fossil rodents from the southwestern Amazonia of Brazil have been studied since the first half of the 20th century. Several caviomorph rodents were reported for the Neogene of this region, mainly neoepiblemids and dinomyids. Until recently, the record of dinomyids in the Solimões Formation (Late Miocene) was predominantly based on a few isolated teeth, which made it difficult to make more accurate taxonomic identifications due to the scarcity of diagnostic characters. Here, new remains, more complete than those previously reported, of potamarchine dinomyids from the Neogene of Brazil are described. A new species of Potamarchus and a new genus and species of a Potamarchinae are erected. In addition, new material of Potamarchus murinus and Potamarchus sp. is identified. These data suggest a higher diversity of dinomyids in in the western Amazonia than previously supposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: to identify the main causes for hospital admissions and deaths related to systemic arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM), and to analyze morbidity and mortality trends, in a municipality in São Paulo's countryside, by comparing two three-years periods, 2002 to 2004 and 2010 to 2012. Methods: cross-sectional study which used secondary data regarding deaths from the Information System on Mortality and concerning hospital admissions from the DataSus Hospital Information System. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were conducted. Results: from 2002 to 2012, 325,439 people were admitted to hospitals, 14.7% of them due to circulatory system diseases (CSD) and 0.7% due to DM. The deaths distributed as the following: 29,027 deaths (31.5%) were due to CSD; 8.06% due to cerebrovascular diseases (CVD); and 2.75% due to DM. There was a significant association between admittance and death causes and patients' gender and age in the three-year periods (p<0.001). The highest lethality in hospital admissions was found to be due to CVD (10%). That trend showed that mortality rates dropped, younger patients were admitted due to DM, and older patients were admitted due to CVD - they were more often females. Conclusion: the main causes for hospital admissions were the CSDs; main mortality causes were the CVDs in hypertensive and diabetic women. This paper studies the impact of the Brazilian Arranjos Productivos Locais (APL) policy, a cluster development policy, on small and medium enterprises' (SMEs) performance. Using firm-level data on SMEs for the years 2002-2009, this paper combines fixed effects with reweighting methods to estimate both the direct and the indirect causal effects of participating in the APL policy on employment growth, value of total exports, and likelihood of exporting. Our results show that APL policy generates a positive direct impact on the three outcomes of interest. They also show evidence of short-term negative spillovers effects on employment in the first year after the policy implementation and positive spillovers on export outcomes in the medium and long term. Thus, our findings highlight the importance of accounting for the timing and gestation periods of the effects on firm performances when assessing the impact of clusters policies. The studies on chemical composition and biological activity of propolis had focused mainly on species Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae). There are few studies about the uncommon propolis collected by stingless bees of the Meliponini tribe known as geopropolis. The geopropolis from Scaptotrigona postica was collected in the region of Barra do Corda, Maranhão state, Brazil. The chemical analysis of hydromethanolic extract of this geopropolis (HMG) was carried out through HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS and the main constituents found were pyrrolizidine alkaloids and C-glycosyl flavones. The presence of alkaloids in extracts of propolis is detected for the first time in this sample. The antiviral activity of HMG was evaluated through viral DNA quantification experiments and electron microscopy experiments. Quantification of viral DNA from herpes virus showed reduction of about 98% in all conditions and concentration tested of the HMG extract. The results obtained were corroborated by transmission electron microscopy, in which the images did not show particle or viral replication complex. The antiviral activity of C-glycosyl flavones was reported for a variety of viruses, being observed at different points in the viral replication. This work is the first report about the antiviral activity of geopropolis from Scaptotrigona postica, in vitro, against antiherpes simplex virus (HSV). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is one of the most common genital infections in women. The therapeutic arsenal remains restricted, and some alternatives to VVC treatment are being studied. The present study evaluated the influence of a propolis extractive solution (PES) on biofilm production by Candida albicans isolated from patients with VVC. Susceptibility testing was used to verify the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of PES, with fluconazole and nystatin as controls. The biofilm formation of 29 vaginal isolates of C. albicans and a reference strain that were exposed to PES was evaluated using crystal violet staining. Colony- forming units were evaluated, proteins and carbohydrates of the matrix biofilm were quantified, and scanning electron microscopy was performed. The MIC of PES ranged from 68.35 to 546.87 µg/mL of total phenol content in gallic acid. A concentration of 546.87 µg/mL was able to cause the death of 75.8% of the isolates. PES inhibited biofilm formation by C. albicans from VVC. Besides antifungal activity, PES appears to present important antibiofilm activity on abiotic surfaces, indicating that it may have an additional beneficial effect in the treatment of VVC.
