Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic mass communication and social media have impacted mostly urban societies in several countries and the dissemination of disinformation has conditioned views and behaviors on part of society. Based on the development of our own software, keywords related to proven ineffective drugs and other terms related to the new coronavirus (SarsCoV-2) were searched and the messages and scope were analyzed in terms of profile “likes” of politicians and scientists on Twitter in Brazil. The study of the polarization and politicization of speeches is capable of contributing to the understanding of the phenomenon of disinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Floristic and phytosociological studies provide relevant information about plant communities, even indicating the state of anthropization in areas of native vegetation. Thus, the present study aimed to identify the floristic composition and analyze phytosociological parameters in an area of natural occurrence of Caatinga, verifying the human interference in the local flora. 18 plots of 30 × 30 m were installed, and in each plot, all living and dead individuals with circumference at breast height were measured at 1.30 m from the soil of the stem equal to or greater than 6 cm. The recorded species were identified, verifying the floristic composition, diversity, similarity, and the phytosociological parameters were analyzed considering the total survey and per plot. The botanical family Fabaceae was the most representative in the studied area with seven species, Cenostigma pyramidale being the most abundant species among the 25 identified, and, in general, also presented the highest values for phytosociological parameters. The floristic similarity between the plots indicated the formation of four groups, with different levels of conservation. The most conserved plots presented greater diversity and higher values of phytosociological parameters, with some correlation between vegetation conservation and such variables. The result of human activity in the Caatinga analyzed showed that there is a need for measures that promote reduction and mitigation of the local flora loss, as well as in the recovery of anthropic areas. The air traffic environment is a complex system that involves several players. Between the air navigation service provider (ANPS) and the final client, many different organizations act with different purposes but are strongly interfaced. Changes and modifications in terms of technology, predefined process, or personnel are constantly needed, requiring coordination among the stakeholders. However, due to the high level of interaction between the players, any change in a complex system like the air traffic environment requires risk management. This paper demonstrates the suitability and advantages of the System-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes/Systems-Theoretic Process Analysis (STAMP/STPA) method to be applied to the risk assessment of an operational air traffic modification. The method, which had never been used on an air traffic problem in Brazil before, was applied considering the implementation of segregated simultaneous operation at the Guarulhos International Airport. The results were proven to be effective in terms of deriving useful safety requirements. From such demonstration, STAMP/STPA can be considered as a feasible alternative to the brainstorming method currently applied for risk assessment and generation of safety requirements regarding modifications in the structure of the air traffic services (ATS) in Brazil. There is a constant and permanent critique to current conditions of the penal system, especially in Brazil, insisting that contemporary penalty is in crisis. One may ask: Is the penal system in crisis or is it the crisis? It may be suggested that the irrationality of the modern penal system is inherent to its functioning, a logic determined by the disposition of production modes and modern social relationships. In fact, there is no surprise in the crisis of the penal system and its selective aspects. Selectivity has always been immanent to the penal system. The difference lies in the fact that the process occurs in a subtler and ideologized manner and its effects trigger the increasing identity destruction of the Other. The modern subject is more and more de-subjectified and that which most suffers within the biopolitical mechanisms is the 'multitude'. In fact, it is placed close to the elemental zero condition of homini sacri, human waste, inserted within a state of exception increasingly composing the standard juridical and political structure. Current paper comprises a short critical and philosophical analysis of the prison phenomenon to elaborate a new set of approaches to deal with penal selectivity, mass imprisonment and the illegitimacy of the penal juridical discourse. Biological invasions have the potential to change the local marine biodiversity through increasing predation pressure and interactions among species. Charybdis hellerii is a swimming crab native to the Indo-West Pacific, it was first collected in the Atlantic Ocean in 1987 and is currently found in high abundance in coastal areas of southeastern Brazil. We evaluated the presence of the invasive crab C. hellerii from the coast of São Paulo state, Brazil, analyzing the stomach contents and performing laboratory-based feeding experiments. In crabs with stomachs full enough to be analyzed (N = 19), mussels (30%) and brachyuran crabs (14.21%) were the most frequent prey items found. Based on these data, we experimentally tested how different densities and life stages (adults and juveniles - differentiated by carapace width - CW) of the invasive crab affected feeding patterns. Results indicated that predator density effects on the predation pressure were dependent on the prey type. Mussels were consumed highest at medium predator densities (30 crabs/m3), whereas crabs were consumed highest at high predator densities (60 crabs/m3). There was no influence of the life stage on prey consumption, suggesting that adults (CW = 57.12–67.59 mm) and juveniles (CW = 39.77–43.18 mm) exhibit similar predation. Charybdis hellerii is an important consumer of benthic native prey, having the potential to change food webs through predation pressure on bioengineers and associated fauna. As the removal of C. hellerii from the environment is difficult, the next step toward is to understand the effect of the invasive crab on the native trophic web. Amphibians have suffered population decline due to several factors, including exposure to pesticides. In the south of Brazil, rice cultivations use herbicides based on atrazine, glyphosate and quinclorac as the commercial formulations Primoleo®, Roundup® and Facet®, respectively. Rhinella icterica was chosen to evaluate oxidative balance markers and body condition after exposure to three concentrations of herbicides (10, 20 and 40 µg/L of atrazine and quinclorac; 100, 250 and 500 µg/L of glyphosate). These xenobiotics, regardless of the concentrations used, accelerated the development process of animals and seemed to act as modulators of development. We observed no significant variations for any of the oxidative balance markers studied (superoxide dismutase, catalase, TBARS and carbonylated proteins); however, we cannot rule out that other antioxidant system components prevent oxidative stress. In general, atrazine and glyphosate accelerated the development of tadpoles, and quinclorac retards this process, which could impact the survival of these animals. Climate change increasingly influences the loss of biodiversity, especially in ectothermic organisms, which depend on environmental temperatures to obtain heat and regulate their life cycle. Studies that aim to understand the impact of temperature variation are important to better understand the possible impacts generated on the homeostasis of ectothermic organisms. Our objective was to characterize the responses of juvenile Liolaemus arambarensis lizards to abrupt changes in temperature, quantifying markers of body condition, intermediary and hormonal metabolism and oxidative balance. We collected 45 juvenile individuals of L. arambarensis (winter: 20 and summer: 25) in Barra do Ribeiro, Brazil. We transported the animals to the laboratory, where they were acclimatized for five days at a temperature of 20 °C, then divided and exposed to temperatures of 10 °C, 20 °C, 30 °C and 40 °C for 24 h. After exposure, the animals were euthanized and the brain, caudal muscle, thigh, and liver tissues were extracted for quantification of biomarkers of metabolism (glycogen and total proteins) and oxidative balance (acetylcholinesterase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase and lipoperoxidation) and plasma for corticosterone quantification. The results show that L. arambarensis is susceptible to sudden temperature variations, where higher temperatures caused greater activity of antioxidant enzymes, increased lipoperoxidation and higher plasma levels of corticosterone in animals eliminated in winter. The present study demonstrated that abrupt changes in temperature could significantly modify the homeostatic mechanisms of animals, which could lead to oxidative stress and a potential trade-off between survival and growth/reproduction. In this context, the organism mobilizes energy resources for survival, with possible damage to growth and reproduction. Demonstrate that a change in temperature can be a potential factor in extinction for a species given the profile of global climate change. As SARS-CoV-2 continues to produce new variants, the demand for diagnostics and a better understanding of COVID-19 remain key topics in healthcare. Skin manifestations have been widely reported in cases of COVID-19, but the mechanisms and markers of these symptoms are poorly described. In this cross-sectional study, 101 patients (64 COVID-19 positive patients and 37 controls) were enrolled between April and June 2020, during the first wave of COVID-19, in São Paulo, Brazil. Enrolled patients had skin imprints sampled non-invasively using silica plates; plasma samples were also collected. Samples were used for untargeted lipidomics/metabolomics through high-resolution mass spectrometry. We identified 558 molecular ions, with lipids comprising most of them. We found 245 plasma ions that were significant for COVID-19 diagnosis, compared to 61 from the skin imprints. Plasma samples outperformed skin imprints in distinguishing patients with COVID-19 from controls, with F1-scores of 91.9% and 84.3%, respectively. Skin imprints were excellent for assessing disease severity, exhibiting an F1-score of 93.5% when discriminating between patient hospitalization and home care statuses. Specifically, oleamide and linoleamide were the most discriminative biomarkers for identifying hospitalized patients through skin imprinting, and palmitic amides and N-acylethanolamine 18:0 were also identified as significant biomarkers. These observations underscore the importance of primary fatty acid amides and N-acylethanolamines in immunomodulatory processes and metabolic disorders. These findings confirm the potential utility of skin imprinting as a valuable non-invasive sampling method for COVID-19 screening; a method that may also be applied in the evaluation of other medical conditions. COVID-19 is still placing a heavy health and financial burden worldwide. Impairment in patient screening and risk management plays a fundamental role on how governments and authorities are directing resources, planning reopening, as well as sanitary countermeasures, especially in regions where poverty is a major component in the equation. An efficient diagnostic method must be highly accurate, while having a cost-effective profile. We combined a machine learning-based algorithm with mass spectrometry to create an expeditious platform that discriminate COVID-19 in plasma samples within minutes, while also providing tools for risk assessment, to assist healthcare professionals in patient management and decision-making. A cross-sectional study enrolled 815 patients (442 COVID-19, 350 controls and 23 COVID-19 suspicious) from three Brazilian epicenters from April to July 2020. We were able to elect and identify 19 molecules related to the disease's pathophysiology and several discriminating features to patient's health-related outcomes. The method applied for COVID-19 diagnosis showed specificity >96% and sensitivity >83%, and specificity >80% and sensitivity >85% during risk assessment, both from blinded data. Our method introduced a new approach for COVID-19 screening, providing the indirect detection of infection through metabolites and contextualizing the findings with the disease's pathophysiology. The pairwise analysis of biomarkers brought robustness to the model developed using machine learning algorithms, transforming this screening approach in a tool with great potential for real-world application.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected disease with large geographic distribution worldwide. Among the several different species of this parasite, S. mansoni is the most common and relevant one; its pathogenesis is also known to vary according to the worms' strain. High parasitical virulence is directly related to granulomatous reactions in the host's liver, and might be influenced by one or more molecules involved in a specific metabolic pathway. Therefore, better understanding the metabolic profile of these organisms is necessary, especially for an increased potential of unraveling strain virulence mechanisms and resistance to existing treatments. In this report, MALDI-MSI and the metabolomic platform were employed to characterize and differentiate two Brazilian S. mansoni strains: males and females from Belo Horizonte (BH) and from Sergipe (SE). By performing direct analysis, it is possible to distinguish the sex of adult worms, as well as identify the spatial distribution of chemical markers. Phospholipids, diacylglycerols and triacylglycerols were located in specific structures of the worms' bodies, such as tegument, suckers, reproductive and digestive systems. Lipid profiles were found to be different both between strains and males or females, giving specific metabolic fingerprints for each group. This indicates that biochemical characterization of adult S. mansoni may help narrowing-down the investigation of new therapeutic targets according to worm composition, molecule distribution and, therefore, aggressiveness of disease., (Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Scientific activity in Brazil has experienced an accelerated growth in the past decades, with an increase in productivity that greatly surpasses the international average. This growth has occurred mostly at the expense of centers of excellence in public universities, which account for the vast majority of the country's scientific output. The aim of this study was to evaluate the production of the Department of Biochemistry of a large public university in southern Brazil (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul), as well as to identify internal and external policies that have influenced this growing production profile. We have performed a historical analysis of the scientific output of this Department of Biochemistry, which accounts for a considerable share of the indexed scientific production at this university. By focusing on the temporal course of its growth and drawing correlations between scientific output and important events in the history of the Department of Biochemistry and of the Brazilian science policies, we concluded that internal factors (as the creation of a postgraduation program, collaboration among researchers, experienced abroad researchers, qualification of faculty members) and external factors (as investments in the postgraduate education, the establishment of national scientific policies, such as financial stimuli for productive researchers and evaluation systems) influence scientific productivity in Brazil.
