The present study evaluates the monophyly of Spintharinae with the inclusion of all ten genera listed under subfamily (Brunepisinus; Chrosiothes; Episinus; Janula; Moneta; Neoepisinus; Pycnoepisinus; Spintharus; Stemmops; and Thwaitesia) and establishes the internal relationship among the spintharines genera. We evaluated 107 morphological characters and included 59 species as terminal taxa, 13 of which are outgroups. The phylogenetic analysis under implied weight resulted in three most parsimonious trees with the same topology with six optimal K values (3.349, 4.025, 4.910, 6.117, 7.859, 10.598). The monophyly of the Spintharinae is supported by four synapomorphies, two of these are exclusive. Stemmops was found to be a sister group to the rest of Spintharinae. The genera Spintharus, Thwaitesia, and Chrosiothes constitute a group. A larger group is represented by Brunepisinus, Episinus, Moneta, Neopisinus, and Pycnoepisinus. The other large group includes species of Janula and some species of Episinus. The genus Episinus appears polyphyletic. We described seven new species of the Spintharinae genus Janula from Brazil. Sixteen species are transferred from Episinus to Janula. Males of Janula malachina and J. teresopolis are described for the first time. Episinus rio is synonymized with Janula bicorniger. We present new illustrations of the male and female of Janula nebulosa and J. salobrensis. The species Janula bicruciata and J. nebulosa are recorded for the first time from Bolivia and other new records are provided for the known species. Amaranth is a synthetic red azo dye approved in several countries such as Canada, Australia and Brazil, but banned in the United States. There are few studies evaluating the exposure of the general population to this food colouring substance, in Brazil, specifically, there are virtually no data on its intake. This study aimed to estimate the Theoretical Maximum Daily Intake (TMDI) of the Brazilian population and to quantify Amaranth in foods that contribute the most to its consumption. Data on the presence of Amaranth were correlated with consumption data from National Household Budget Surveys carried out in 2008/2009 and 2017/2018, among people aged ten or older. The results show that the mean TMDI (mg/day) of Amaranth does not exceed the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) in any population group, it, however, may get as high as 66% of the ADI among teenagers. For the TMDI balanced by the prevalence of food consumption, that is, considering consumers only (eaters only, rather than the population mean), results show that the amounts can exceed the ADI in all population groups studied. The intake of Amaranth is higher among the younger population (adolescents) reaching up to three times the ADI in the worst-case scenario. The food groups which contribute the most to the intake of Amaranth, are 'juices/artificial juices/reconstituted powdered juice mixes' and 'soft drinks'. Laboratory tests of powdered fruit mixes and soft drinks sold in the city of Porto Alegre (Brazil) show that 17 out of 20 samples tested exceeded the limit set by Brazilian regulations (5 mg/100 mL in the final product). This paper offers the first cladistic analysis of the poorly known millipede genus Poecilocricus Schubart, 1962, from Brazil. The data set was composed of 18 taxa and 40 morphological characters. We performed a parsimony analysis by exhaustive search (ie; implicit enumeration) under equal weights (EW) in TNT 1.5. One most parsimonious tree with 78 steps (CI = 0.57; RI = 0.79) recovered the monophyly of the genus. Poecilocricus was supported by the following synapomorphies: median portion of mentum of the gnathochilarium with a large and rounded protuberance; second body ring excavated in ventral view; seventh body ring with internal extension on sternite; coxae of leg pairs 5, 6, and 7 expanded into a long process; apex of coxae of leg pair 3 with short thin setae on apex; medial portion of coxite of anterior gonopod with similar round bulge at both sides in anterior view; telopodite of posterior gonopod with external branch bifurcated in two short branches; and solenomere short and lanceolated. In addition, we conducted a taxonomic revision of the genus providing redescription of the type species Poecilocricus singularis Schubart, 1962, and the description of the four new species: P. mataracasp. nov., P. vazantesp. nov., P. itacarambiensissp. nov. and P. linasp. nov. Rhinocricus Karsch, 1881 has 207 species occurring mainly in the Americas, and more than 60 of them were described from Brazil. The genus was proposed based on the presence of dorsal scobinae on the prozonites. The present study evaluates the monophyly of three species groups previously proposed in Rhinocricus. We evaluated 39 morphological characters and included 30 species as terminal taxa, 9 of which are outgroups. We performed a parsimony analysis under implied weighting in TNT 1.5, obtaining the same most parsimonious tree topology with three optimal K values (5.992, 7.309, and 9.105). None of the three previously proposed species groups of Rhinocricus was recovered monophyletic. Rhinocricus (Erythocricus) sanguineostriatus Schubart, 1962 was recovered sister to all other species, and Argentocricus Verhoeff, 1941 resulted paraphyletic. The diagnostic morphological characters traditionally used to separate species groups, subgenera, and genera were not recovered as synapomorphies. Further investigation including a broader species sample is needed to establish robust relationship hypotheses between Argentocricus and the remainder species of Rhinocricus, thus identifying monophyletic groups in the genus and their synapomorphies. This report describes anatomical variations in an indigenous patient from the Brazilian Amazon. A 13-year-old indigenous girl attended the dental clinic for a routine examination. Clinically, a change in the coronary morphology of all upper incisors was observed; characterized by a shovel-shaped lingual surface-a feature considered a polygenic hereditary trait commonly found in native American people. The x-ray examination revealed the presence of a root anomaly in the left upper central incisor. A cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan was performed, revealing the presence of a supernumerary root located on the lingual surface. A single wide canal, which bifurcated in the middle-third level into two canals with different foramina, was observed in the cervical portion. It is essential for dental surgeons to be aware of possible anatomical differences, especially considering the origin of the patient, to avoid interference in treatment success. In Brazil, there are species of snakes that become involved in accidents and cause serious health problems to the inhabitants, highlighting the genus Bothrops for being responsible for approximately 90% of accidents reported annually. In the northern region of the country, this genus is responsible for the largest number of accidents, especially among rural dwellers. These populations invest in alternative treatments for with the purpose of improving the symptoms caused by snakebites. The species Mauritia flexuosa L. f., known as buriti, is traditionally used for the treatment of envenomation by snakes. This study aimed to evaluate the antiophidic potential of the oil of Mauritia flexuosa L. f. for Bothrops moojeni H. venom, confronting cultural and scientific knowledge. The physicochemical properties were determined, and the components present in the oil, extracted from fruit pulp, were analyzed by Gas Chromatography Coupled with Mass Spectrometry. The in vitro inhibitory capacity of the oil for phospholipase, metalloprotease and serine protease activities was investigated. In the in vivo studies, male Swiss mice were used to evaluate the effect of oil on lethality and toxicity, and hemorrhagic, myotoxic and edematogenic activities were assessed. GC‒MS analysis identification of 90.95% of the constituents of the oil, with the main components being 9-eicosenoic acid, (Z)- (34.54%), n-hexadecanoic acid (25.55%) and (E)-9-octadecenoic acid ethyl ester (12.43%). For the substrates, the outcomes indicate that the oil inhibited the activity of the main classes of toxins present in Bothrops moojeni H. venom (VBm) at the highest dose tested (0.5 μL), with inhibition of 84% for the hydrolysis of the selective substrate for serine protease and inhibition of 60% for the hydrolysis of substrates for PLA 2 and metalloproteases. The antiophidic activity in vivo was evaluated with two concentrations of the oil: 1.5 mg, the dosage the population, diluted in mineral oil to a volume of 1 tablespoon and 15 mg, administered by gavage 30 min before poisoning and at time zero (concomitant to poisoning), and both concentrations administered by gavage in combination with topical use at time zero. The bleeding time in the group treated with oil at a concentration of 15 mg administered at time zero was significantly lower than that in the control group (p < 0.05). However, a greater inhibition of bleeding time was observed when local application was combined with the gavage treatment at both concentrations tested at time zero (p < 0.05). In the myotoxicity test, oil was efficient in reducing the myotoxic effects induced by the venom at the two concentrations tested, with gavage administration at time zero and gavage plus topical administration at time zero (p < 0.05). The data obtained show that the oil is safe to use at the concentrations studied and contains fatty acids that may collaborate for cellular-level repair of the injuries caused by Bm poisoning. The in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that oil inhibits the main proteolytic enzymes present in the venom and that it has important activities to control the local effects caused by bothropic venom. The composition of the spider fauna of riparian forests is insufficiently known. These forests, adjacent to both aquatic and terrestrial environments, are recognised as having important ecosystem functions. We compare the composition of spider assemblages of four riparian forests in different drainage basins, along with their microhabitats (edges and forest interior), in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Sampling was carried out in the riparian forests of the following rivers: Piratini, municipality of Arroio Grande; Camaquã, municipality of Cristal; Sinos, municipality of Parobé, and Maquiné, municipality of Maquiné. Two samples per season were collected in two years, by sampling the tree-shrub strata with a beating tray, following fixed transects. There were six transects per drainage basin, two per microhabitat: grassland edge, forest interior and river edge. Overall, 42,057 spiders were sampled (juveniles: 79%; adults: 21%). Among the adults (8,851 individuals), we identified 440 species. Similarity analyses (ANOSIM) indicated that the araneofauna composition of the four drainage basins differ in their quantitative (Morisita) and qualitative (Simpson) similarity indexes. There were no differences in composition among microhabitats. The composition of the Maquiné River basin was the most distinct, possibly due to a greater influence of the Atlantic forest on it and a greater dominance of the Linyphiidae Sphecozone personata (Simon, 1894) (SIMPER analysis, contribution to dissimilarity: 12.15%). Differences in spider composition on large spatial scales most likely reflect regional variations in a number of environmental factors, and result in each area having in increased importance in terms of conservation. Objective: To develop and validate a high-risk predictive model that identifies, at least, one common adverse event in older population: early readmission (up to 30 days after discharge), long hospital stays (10 days or more) or in-hospital deaths., Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study including patients aged 60 years or older (n=340) admitted at a 630-beds tertiary hospital, located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. A predictive model of high-risk indication was developed by analyzing logistical regression models. This model prognostic capacity was assessed by measuring accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve with 95% confidence intervals were also obtained to assess the discriminatory power of the model. Internal validation of the prognostic model was performed in a separate sample (n=168)., Results: Statistically significant predictors were identified, such as current Barthel Index, number of medications in use, presence of diabetes mellitus, difficulty chewing or swallowing, extensive surgery, and dementia. The study observed discrimination model acceptance in the construction sample 0.77 (95% confidence interval: 0.71-0.83) and good calibration. The characteristics of the validation samples were similar, and the receiver operating characteristic curve area was 0.687 (95% confidence interval: 0.598-0.776). We could assess an older patient's adverse health events during hospitalization after admission., Conclusion: A predictive model with acceptable discrimination was obtained, with satisfactory results for early readmission (30 days), long hospital stays (10 days), or in-hospital death.

The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of psychotropic drug utilization among adults and seniors and determine associated factors, therapeutic classes and sources of acquisition. Data from the Brazilian National Survey on Access, Use and Promotion of the Rational Use of Medicines (2013-2014) were analyzed. The prevalence of use of at least one psychotropic drug in the overall sample (adults and seniors) was 8.7%. In the adjusted analyses, positive associations were found between the use of psychotropic drugs and the female sex, poorer self-rated health and chronic diseases (p < 0.05). The most frequently used therapeutic classes were antidepressants (55.3%) by the adults and anxiolytics (59.3%) by the seniors. Approximately 23.0% of psychotropic drugs were obtained exclusively from pharmacies of the public healthcare system and 77.0% were acquired from other sources. The findings reveal a low proportion of attaining psychotropic drugs through the Brazilian public healthcare system as well as the need for public policies that encourage the rational use of prescriptions and treatments to promote a better quality of life and ensure the population's right to health.

Little is known about the physiology of latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. We studied the mutational rates of 24 index tuberculosis (TB) cases and their latently infected household contacts who developed active TB up to 5.25 years later, as an indication of bacterial physiological state and possible generation times during latent TB infection in humans. Here we report that the rate of new mutations in the M. tuberculosis genome decline dramatically after two years of latent infection (two-sided p < 0.001, assuming an 18 h generation time equal to log phase M. tuberculosis, with latency period modeled as a continuous variable). Alternatively, assuming a fixed mutation rate, the generation time increases over the latency duration. Mutations indicative of oxidative stress do not increase with increasing latency duration suggesting a lack of host or bacterial derived mutational stress. These results suggest that M. tuberculosis enters a quiescent state during latency, decreasing the risk for mutational drug resistance and increasing generation time, but potentially increasing bacterial tolerance to drugs that target actively growing bacteria.

Three new species of Catharosoma are described from southern Brazil: Catharosoma pedritense n. sp., Catharosoma promatense n. sp., and Catharosoma ibirapuitense n. sp.. New records of three other Catharosoma species, which considerably extend their distributions, are provided, including a redescription of the hitherto particularly poorly-known species Catharosoma intermedium (Carl, 1902).

This article aimed to determine the prevalence of latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and associated factors in community health workers (CHW) in Brazil, using two cutoff points for the tuberculin skin test (5mm and 10mm). This was a cross-sectional study with data on gender, age, BCG scar, working in a primary care unit (PCU), having a household contact with tuberculosis (TB), alcohol consumption, previous tuberculin skin test (TST), smoking, time on the job as CHW, and comorbidities. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and to control for confounding. TST was applied and read after 48-72 hours. Prevalence rates were 57.88% and 37.3%, respectively, for the 5mm and 10mm TST cutoffs. Variables that remained associated with positive TST using the 10mm cutoff were working in a primary care unit that had implemented a Tuberculosis Control Program (TCP) and history of household contact with TB. Variables associated with the 5mm cutoff were working in a primary care unit with a TCP. Necessary actions at the local level include awareness-raising and strengthening of continuing education.

This study aimed to evaluate key characteristics of structure in a sample of maternity hospitals in Brazil. Structure was evaluated according to Ministry of Health criteria and included: geographic location, obstetric volume, presence of ICU, teaching activities, staff qualifications, and availability of equipment and medicines. The results showed differences in staff qualifications and availability of equipment in obstetric and neonatal care according to type of financing, region of the country, and degree of complexity. The North/Northeast and Central-West regions presented the most serious problems with structure. The public and mixed hospitals were better structured in the South/Southeast, reaching satisfactory levels on various items, similar or superior to the private hospitals. The current study contributes to the debate on quality of structure in Brazil's hospital services and emphasizes the need to develop analytical studies considering process and results of obstetric and neonatal care.

Brazil is in 14th among the 23 countries responsible for 80% of the tuberculosis (TB) cases in the world. Aiming to understand the maintenance of these indexes, this study was developed to identify if the knowledge about tuberculosis by doctors and nurses, who work in the Family Health Strategy in the city of Vitória (ES), would be a factor in the mediation of the prevention processes, diagnosis and treatment of the Tuberculosis. This is a cross-sectional study, with a sample size of 50 professionals. The collected data had been analyzed using the Chi-square and Fisher Exact tests with significance level of 0.05. Regarding the transmission and diagnosis of the Tuberculosis, there was no statistically significant difference between doctors and nurses. Only one variable presented a statistical difference: 41% of doctors and 15% of the nurses (p<0.05) mentioned that the patient must be attended in a place of choice of the doctor or nurse, and still, 4% of the total of the sample had answered that the supervision cannot be made by a member of the family. The research proves that doctors and nurses has knowledge to reduce the indexes of Tuberculosis, even so is indispensable the continuous study and qualification of these professionals.
