The proliferation of woody plant species over grassland areas has been reported in different regions of the planet. This phenomenon has caused economic, social and environmental effects in the Brazilian Pantanal. Traditional knowledge based on scientific evidences technically supports the forms of management to control the process of colonization of woody plants in native grasslands, thus promoting the original ecological restoration of these ecosystems. Our study aimed to evaluate three management regimes with prescribed fire for controlling the invasion of Vochysia divergens Pohl. on grassland matrix areas in the Brazilian Pantanal. The results obtained showed that prescribed fire is an efficient tool in controlling V. divergens in the early stages of its establishment, and effectively contributes to ecological restoration processes in the savannah grasslands, aimed at controlling woody tree and shrub species invasions in the grasslands of the Brazilian Pantanal. DOUBLE cropping ,SCIENTIFIC knowledge ,CLIMATE change ,SOYBEAN ,CLIMATE change adaptation ,CROPS ,CORN - Abstract
Brazil is one of the main producing and exporting countries of corn and soybean and a continental country with climatic diversity that allows the cultivation of these crops in various agricultural systems. Double cropping is a widely adopted system throughout the national territory, where it is possible to cultivate soybeans at the beginning of the growing season, followed by corn in succession, in the same growing season. The present study aims to systematize the scientific knowledge about the impacts of future climate change scenarios on yield and on the double-cropping system of soybean + corn in Brazil. Systematic review procedures were adopted. The soybean yield is projected to increase in all regions of Brazil under all climate scenarios. Corn yields under future climate scenarios are projected to decline, with the subtropical climate region being less affected than the northern regions. The double-cropping systems of soybean + corn tend to present increasing climate risks in tropical climate regions. Climate change scenarios point to a delay in the start of the rainy season that will delay the sowing of soybeans, consequently delaying the sowing of corn in succession, resulting in fewer rainy days to complete its cycle. Biofloc technology (BFT) is an aquaculture technology that uses microbial communities to produce a balanced aquatic environment for fish and crustaceans. This study evaluated the global research trends and measured the performance of researchers, organizations or research centers, countries, and funding agencies participating in BFT research in the last decade. Scientific knowledge mapping was also performed to understand the social and conceptual structure of the research publications. The study was conducted based on journal article publications indexed in the Scopus database between 2013 and 2022. The analysis showed that BFT research was increasing steadily, with a total of 911 documents published in the past 10 years. Brazil, China, and India were the three most productive countries in the field. The most productive journals were Aquaculture, Aquaculture Research, and Aquaculture International. Regarding research topics, the largest share of documents was related to bioflocs and their technologies, followed by Litopenaeus vannamei, water quality, growth performance, shrimp, Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, etc. Co-authorship network analysis revealed that the largest cluster comprised researchers from Brazil, China, and India. Moreover, the study of societal attention revealed that the BFT research needs more public attention as the research was discussed and mentioned only a few social media platforms. However, the BFT research had significant readers on Mendeley. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of BFT research and the research performance of scientific actors. It can serve as a valuable reference for researchers and policymakers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The emergence of civil associations in favor of cannabis began in the 2010s. Faced with the inertia of the State, these organizations have acted in the reception, support, information, training, and facilitation of access for patients and their families to the medicine produced from marijuana, a prohibited substance in Brazil. This study aims to analyze how cannabis activism promoted by Brazilian associations is based on scientific knowledge or knowledge acquired through the experience of members. The methodology included interviews with participants from the ACuCa, Ama+me, and Apepi associations, as well as the Content Analysis of the profiles of these institutions on Instagram. It was found that cannabis activism on Instagram is similar to that practiced in person; however, activism on social media prioritizes the dissemination of knowledge through information and training of its followers, being careful to treat the content in order to suit the guidelines of the platform. In addition, the main lines of action of cannabis associations (reception and distribution of medicinal oils) appear in a veiled way in the publications, most of which occur through private conversations in the media with the associations. Issues related to prevention and mitigation of extreme events' impacts, intensified by climate changes, have been receiving progressive attention from the academic community. Impacts are increasingly expensive for the society, particularly in coastal zones, where population growth and concentration of economic activities modify the landscape and alter the natural balance of coastal processes, contributing to increase population's vulnerability to these events. Considering the growing need to measure the social vulnerability of coastal populations and the lack of studies that focus on the effects of changing spatial scales over vulnerability analysis, this article proposes a methodology for obtaining a multiscale Coastal Social Vulnerability Index to extreme events (SVI-Coast) for 281 municipalities facing the sea in Brazil. The proposed methodology employed data from the most recent available national demographic census (2010), over which descriptive and multivariate statistical techniques were applied, considering three units of spatial aggregation: states, municipalities, and census sectors. Results show that in Brazil there is a tendency for concentration of greater social vulnerabilities in North and Northeast regions and that the key variables responsible for this are income and access to infrastructure, which are underprovided in these regions. This methodology can be replicated on multiple spatial scales, contributing to provide scientific knowledge capable of assisting decision-making by local and regional managers, especially by identifying priority areas, which need urgent actions for mitigation and reduction of coastal social vulnerability. Understanding the relevant aspects of the construction of knowledge in science, as well as the elements that are an essential part of a scientific inquiry, need to be discussed in teacher training courses in the area of natural sciences. This study aimed to identify and classify investigative elements present in the conceptions of undergraduates from a university in Brazil and another in Portugal who will be working in basic education. This is a qualitative study using content analysis to identify categories based on the students' responses, and a quantitative approach using descriptive statistics to quantify the absolute frequency of each response. The data were obtained during a preparatory course on inquiry teaching given to 30 undergraduates from both countries in 2023 through the analysis of a problem situation involving forensic entomology. The results showed that the most frequent investigative elements present in the students' answers are the problem, the formulation of hypotheses, the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, and the conclusion. STRUCTURAL bioinformatics , *SCIENTIFIC knowledge , *COMPUTATIONAL biology , *DESIGN competitions , *ORGANIZATIONAL structure , *COMPETITION (Biology) , *PROBLEM solving in children , *SWIMMING competitions - Abstract
The article presents a framework for a Bioinformatics competition that focuses on 4 key aspects: structure, model, overview, and perspectives. Structure represents the organizational framework employed to coordinate the main tasks involved in the competition. Model showcases the competition design, which encompasses 3 phases. Overview presents our case study, the League of Brazilian Bioinformatics (LBB) 2nd Edition. Finally, the section on perspectives provides a brief discussion of the LBB 2nd Edition, along with insights and feedback from participants. LBB is a biannual team competition launched in 2019 to promote the ongoing training of human resources in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in Brazil. LBB aims to stimulate ongoing training in Bioinformatics by encouraging participation in competitions, promoting the organization of future Bioinformatics competitions, and fostering the integration of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology community in the country, as well as collaboration among participants. The LBB 2nd Edition was launched in 2021 and featured 251 competitors forming 91 teams. Knowledge competitions promote learning, collaboration, and innovation, which are crucial for advancing scientific knowledge and solving real-world problems. In summary, this article serves as a valuable resource for individuals and organizations interested in developing knowledge competitions, offering a model based on our experience with LBB to benefit all levels of Bioinformatics trainees. Author summary: There are various methods of learning, and one such approach involves a commonly used in the computing field, fostering competition, where communication, teamwork, group learning, and problem-solving play crucial roles. Similarly, in bioinformatics and computational biology, certain institutions or platforms promote learning through challenges. However, national-level competitions in these domains are relatively scarce. Here, we would like to present a framework for a Bioinformatics competition by showing structure, model, overview, and perspectives, using the League of Brazilian Bioinformatics (LBB) 2nd Edition as case study. LBB is the first bioinformatics competition in Latin America and aims to encompass the diverse multidisciplinary aspects of Bioinformatics and promote networking. In LBB, individuals not only have the opportunity to learn but also get to know one another. Further, to stimulate undergraduate training, we promoted teams with a mixture of different academic backgrounds. This approach promotes integration among participants and facilitates the exchange of information. To ensure that all participants have the opportunity to connect and form teams regardless of their background, we have created the MATCH, a script that allows individuals to be randomly paired with others, enabling them to get to know each other and create teams effectively. This approach fosters collaboration and creates a conducive environment for learning and problem-solving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Citizen science contributes to our scientific knowledge when non−researcher citizens collect information, usually, under the supervision of academics. It has revolutionized how traditional science is developed since it accumulates a great quantity of data over larger areas and within shorter periods of time than single researchers would be able to achieve. Both traditional and citizen science data were used to compare how caprimulgid species have been recorded in southern Brazil. Researchers mentioned 13 species from 1820–2020, and citizen scientists (from 1989–2022) detected one more species never mentioned in the literature. There have been no dialogues between traditional and citizen scientists to come together and develop an integrated approach to investigate common hypotheses. It remains unclear whether traditional and citizen scientists will realize that communicating about mutual interests can help organize and solve questions based on empirical observations. This type of joint effort could improve knowledge of caprimulgids in Paraná and other Brazilian regions. Although the ornithological history of southern Brazil has been amassed over the last 200 years, few attempts have been made to describe how species have accumulated. Furthermore, the collaboration of citizen scientists has considerably changed the way researchers analyze empirical data. Caprimulgidae (Nightjars and Nighthawks) species were used to illustrate how species have been recorded since the 1800s in Paraná State by comparing traditional and citizen science data. In addition, reports from both researchers and citizen scientists on the breeding biology of these caprimulgids have been verified. A literature review was conducted searching for the Caprimulgid species within the territory of Paraná. Regarding citizen science, records were obtained from four ornithological platforms. Overall, 14 species were detected within the state, 13 of which have been described in the literature, including 1 endemic to the Atlantic Forest and 3 threatened species. Citizen scientists detected all 13 taxa, in addition to one undocumented species that has never been recorded by researchers. There were 12 times more records on ornithological platforms in half of the sampling effort accumulated in studies, but most of them date from the last five years. Citizen scientists also visited 4.5 times more locations than researchers. Citizen scientists accumulated more records around September and November, and most (59%) records were from 2020–2022. Researchers mentioned species as early as 1820, while continuous studies only began during the 1980s; they concentrated their fieldwork mostly in September. Only one (2%) study sought to describe the breeding biology of a caprimulgid species, but there were 84 observations on ornithological platforms between 2004–2022 on their reproduction. Because of the evident mismatch between traditional and citizen science data due to a lack of congruence between their actions, it is suggested that ornithology in Paraná, as well as other Brazilian regions, would benefit the most if traditional and citizen scientists improved their networking communication to focus on common purposes instead of acting independently. Planetary Health is an expanding scientific field around the world, and actions in different areas are essential to minimize the environmental damage that compromises the future of humanity. This project report aims to describe the development of Planetary Health actions in a rural school in the Brazilian Amazon, to understand and raise awareness of themes related to Planetary Health. To implement the educational activities, a booklet entitled "Planetary Health: Guide for Rural Education" was created. Subsequently, didactic sequences were applied to 37 ninth-grade students in the first semester of 2023. The activities were diversified, including: (1) investigative activities (pre-tests, interviews with family members, ecological footprint adapted to the Amazonian riverside context), (2) interpretative activities (image reading, identification and problem-solving for Planetary Health stories in the Amazon, educational cartoons, and graphs of the sectors with the highest pollution in Brazil and diseases associated with climate change), (3) audiovisual activities (educational videos), (4) playful activities (educational games), (5) practical and field activities (forest tracking, planting seedlings, sanitation trail, construction of a school garden, preparation of a healthy school snack, greenhouse effect simulation, and basic analysis of lake water with a probe). The results of the educational actions allowed students to undergo new experiences on Planetary Health themes, as well as understand the centrality of the Amazon for the planet and how the environmental impacts in this biome are compromising the future of humanity. The experiences during the educational actions showed that young riverside residents are concerned about the future of the Amazon, especially given the environmental destruction that is frequently evident, such as deforestation, fires, illegal mining, and land grabbing. Inserting these themes into riverside education makes it possible to look at the Amazon in a resilient, responsible way and to discuss scientific and local knowledge so that students can develop initiatives to face environmental challenges in their community. We conclude that Planetary Health education needs to be an effective part of the school curriculum, prioritizing reviewing the documents that guide education to prioritize transdisciplinary actions with children and young people, as they are the voices of the future and future leaders in emerging causes. Educational actions in Planetary Health in the Amazon region are an example that can inspire actions in other places with similar characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"Nationalizing Nature: Iguazu Falls and National Parks at the Brazil-Argentina Border" by Frederico Freitas explores the history and development of Argentina's Iguazú National Park and Brazil's Iguaçu National Park, both located near the Iguazu Falls. The author argues that these parks, initially created for the elite, are products of human spatial practices and geopolitical forces. The book examines the conflicting goals of conservation, development, and national security that have shaped the parks over time. It also highlights the influence of local actors and the circulation of scientific knowledge between Argentina, Brazil, and international colleagues. The author emphasizes the tension between environmental conservation and economic development, challenging associations between modernity and the Global North. The book also touches on the treatment of indigenous and mixed-race peoples in the creation of the parks. Finally, it addresses the current threat of deforestation in the subtropical forests surrounding the falls. Overall, "Nationalizing Nature" provides a comprehensive and inclusive perspective on the history and impact of these national parks in the Global South. [Extracted from the article]

In the Anthropocene, scientists have an imperative to prioritize the sharing of scientific knowledge as a fundamental responsibility in fostering collective action. Scientific names are essential in communicating biodiversity, and to maximize their impact, they need to be consistently labeled across all organisms and made accessible to diverse audiences. In our study, we examined the etymological and temporal patterns in naming practices of rotifers and microcrustaceans (cladocerans and copepods). By analyzing a dataset comprising 992 species present in Brazil, but described worldwide since the eighteenth century, we identified various factors influencing specific epithets, including morphology, ecology, behavior, geography, and cultural references, as well as names honoring notable individuals. Our findings revealed that while morphology was the primary basis for etymology (62.1%) in naming rotifers, cladocerans, and copepods, its relative importance has decreased over time. We observed a significant increase in etymologies related to geography and the recognition of influential scientists in the field. Furthermore, our study unveiled a gender bias, with male scientists being more frequently honored with species names (86.4%). In addition to acknowledging the contributions made by taxonomists studying these groups, our study offers valuable insights intended to stimulate reflections on the significance of naming practices in biodiversity research and communication, in line with current social-ecological needs. SCIENCE education , *CULTURAL pluralism , *SCIENTIFIC knowledge , *SCIENCE teachers , *TEACHER training , *CONCEPTION , *RURAL children - Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to analyse the conceptions of science teachers from Brazil and Portugal about the importance of rural children learning science and, based on this, to propose a strategy for teacher training sensitive to cultural diversity in the classroom. The data were collected through questions containing problem situations, with subsequent content analysis. In light of our findings, we argue that the conceptions of Brazilian and Portuguese teachers converge in the sense that rural knowledge can be important facilitators for learning the school scientific knowledge, which is necessary to improve the quality of life of children in their communities. However, despite this, contradictions were found between teaching for conceptual change and conceptual profile change because teachers, while talking about dialogue, attributed supremacy to science for advances to happen in rural environments. Consequently, we propose a strategy for teacher training sensitive to cultural diversity, containing a set of activities whose central purpose is to promote intercultural dialogue in science teaching for rural children. These activities aim to motivate teachers to develop culturally inclusive didactics that give voice to students, increasing their participation and interest in their empowerment in decision-making in diverse cultural contexts. The text titled "An emerging concept of the historical-cultural process of the Afro-Brazilian population" talks about the concept of "quilombismo" and the importance of recovering the memory of the Afro-Brazilian population. It highlights the work of African scholars such as Cheikh Anta Diop, who has reconstructed the meaning and values of ancient cultures and civilizations built by Black Africans. The text also addresses the discrimination and exclusion that the Afro-Brazilian population has faced in Brazil, as well as the need for progressive change for the benefit of this community. It criticizes the historical and human science that has dehumanized Africans and their descendants, and advocates for a scientific knowledge that helps Black people formulate their experience of oppression and self-definition. The text talks about quilombista liberation and the need to build a society based on justice, equality, and respect for all human beings. It also mentions the existence of racism in Brazil and the need to combat authoritarianism and police brutality towards the Afro-Brazilian community. The text presents proposals for action for the Brazilian government regarding the Afro-Brazilian population, such as including race or ethnicity issues in demographic censuses and teaching African history and cultures in the educational system. Quilombismo is a political movement of Black Brazilians that seeks to establish a Quilombista National State based on a free, just, equal, and sovereign society. The movement promotes a cooperative community economy and opposes racism, capitalism, and other forms of discrimination and oppression. Additionally, the creation of the "Week of Memory" is proposed to highlight the history and culture of Afro-Brazilians. [Extracted from the article]

This paper critically revisits traditional perspectives on technology within academic and scientific writing studies. It aims to comprehend the intricate, emerging, and dynamic sociotechnical configurations that underlie contemporary scientific practices. These practices increasingly involve language, text, and literacy practices, seen as products of the collaboration between humans and machines. The paper draws on empirical research on influential institutional metadiscourses in high-impact scientific writing produced and/or disseminated by public universities and a research institute in the State of São Paulo (Brazil), whose local policies of globalization are driven by international university rankings. I use a qualitative content analysis approach grounded in socio-anthropological, socio-semiotic, and pragmatic studies of linguistic ideologies to shed light on how ideological and socio-semiotic processes support the metapragmatics of scientific writing in university policy documents. This metapragmatics is utterly alien to the role of performative sociotechnical infrastructures in the production, distribution, and hierarchization of scientific texts. Additionally, these documents do not account for the diverse conditions and restrictions that shape the production and circulation of academic knowledge in geopolitically marginal and equally diverse regions within the country, including those within São Paulo. Background: COVID-19 pandemic times forced health education to go online, and, due to this necessity, long-term difficulties in education such as bibliographic search in databases like PubMed might have worsened even when platforms such as PubMed provide helping mechanisms to the user. These difficulties or even complete lack of knowledge are, unfortunately, not well documented in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to describe doubts, lack of knowledge and questions of researchers regarding bibliographic research in PubMed as well as to solve all of those doubts by developing a didactic e-book in relation to bibliographic research in PubMed. Methods: This cross-sectional and populational-based study was conducted between January and April 2021. In northern Brazil, a total of 105 dentistry undergraduate students (DUS) received an anonymous digital form (Google
® Forms Platform) using a non-probabilistic "snowball" sampling technique. The digital form was composed of four blocks of dichotomous and multiple-choice questions. After signing the informed consent term, the DUS were divided into three groups according to their period/semester in the dentistry program during the study time (G1: 1st period/semester; G2: 5th period/semester and G3: 10th period/semester). A total of 25 questions referring to demographic, educational and knowledge data about how to do scientific research and how to use bibliographic search in PubMed were asked, and all data were presented as descriptive percentages and then analyzed using the Chi square and G tests. Results: From 105 (100%), G1 had 29/105 (27.6%); G2 had 37/105 (35.2%); G3 had 39/105 (37.2%), the average age was 22.34 years and most participants were female 85/105 (81%). Among our sample, 56/105 (53.4%) had not used any type of search strategy, and 96/105 (91.4%) used database research methods. The main database for literature search used was Scielo 92/105 (87.6%), and 63/105 (60%) had general questions or doubts about bibliographic research. All these data had statistical significance p < 0.0001. Conclusions: The results demonstrate a lack of knowledge and doubts in DUS from three different periods/semesters, and this collected information can help in the formation of didactic material to solve such doubts. In this paper we present a literature review study based on Brazilian articles in the area of Science Education that employ the construct of Epistemic Practices (EPs). The corpus is comprised by eighteen articles from journals classified as Qualis A1 or A2, published between 2008 and 2021. The analysis is based on the thematic foci of the studies, the definitions of EPs presented, the dialogue with the work of Gregory Kelly and the methodologies used. The results demonstrate that: i) the construct has been explored more frequently in studies that deal with Inquiry-based Science Teaching; ii) in addition to the definition of EPs, most national articles make use of other ideas conceived and supported by Kelly; iii) the most common aspect is that the construction of scientific knowledge within a community involves proposition, communication, evaluation and legitimation, and that the promotion of engagement in EPs should figure among the didactic objectives of science classes; iv) the analyzed production does not share theoretical-methodological references that guided Kelly's work on EPs, such as Interactional Ethnography. We argue that EPs have the potential to contribute to advances in discussions in the field of Science Education in Brazil in the sense of delimiting the assumptions of theories and empirical studies, as well as indicating new research directions and adding new members to the knowledge-producing community. Due to the increasing urban development, it has become important for municipalities to permanently understand land use and ecological processes, and make cities smart and sustainable by implementing technological tools for land monitoring. An important problem is the absence of technologies that certify the quality of information for the creation of strategies. In this context, expressive volumes of data are used, requiring great effort to understand their structures, and then access information with the desired quality. This study are designed to provide an initial response to the need for mapping zones in the city of Itajaí (SC), Brazil. The solution proposes to aid object recognition employing object-based classifiers OneR, NaiveBayes, J48, IBk, and Hoeffding Tree algorithms used together with GeoDMA, and a first approach in the use of Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN) and the YOLO algorithm. All this is to characterize vegetation zones, exposed soil zones, asphalt, and buildings within an urban and rural area. Through the implemented model for active identification of geospatial objects with similarity levels, it was possible to apply the data crossover after detecting the best classifier with accuracy (85%) and the kappa agreement coefficient (76%). The case study presents the dynamics of urban and rural expansion, where expressive volumes of data are obtained and submitted to different methods of cataloging and preparation to subsidize rapid control actions. Finally, the research describes a practical and systematic approach, evaluating the extraction of information to the recommendation of knowledge with greater scientific relevance. Allowing the methods presented to apply the calibration of values for each object, to achieve results with greater accuracy, which is proposed to help improve conservation and management decisions related to the zones within the city, leaving as a legacy the construction of a minimum technological infrastructure to support the decision. Civic forms of knowledge, tacitly built around scientific knowledge, reflect culturally specific meanings employed that are put to use in public arenas. Science, technology and society scholarship (STS) has developed a theoretical approach to coproduction of science, and postcolonial science studies critique the universalization of Western epistemologies. The present study extends these perspectives in relation to regenerative medicine in Brazil, examining relevant official documents and the understandings of 15 leaders in the local field about scientific progress, international collaboration and intellectual property rights. The majority of these Brazilian stakeholders hold a techno-deterministic view of scientific progress, and lack any thorough critique of Western scientific premises. While most interviewees ascribe legitimacy to Brazilian public research centres, representatives of civic society organizations express distrust about certain attitudes of local scientists, and criticize the communication of scientific discoveries to the lay public. Furthermore, stakeholders' reflections on international collaboration are distinctly polarized, reflecting the unequal distribution of roles and power among local indigenous and internationalized actors. Although opposition to exclusive patenting is widespread, limited reflection is apparent on such topics as the role of private capital, cell therapy approval and the specificity of ethical and regulatory frameworks. Shales constitute a recent frontier of studies in Sedimentary Geology, stimulated by the new exploratory panorama of Shale Gas, despite being the sealant of many petroleum systems. However, in Brazil the generation of natural gas associated with paleontological studies is unprecedented and fundamental for determining the real regional potentialities in a process of advancing scientific and technological knowledge. Taphonomic studies of fossil macrofauna and ichnology are integrated with sedimentological data, expanding the capacity for paleoenvironmental interpretation of the sedimentary facies. Samples from three distinct outcrops in the Campos Gerais region of the state of Paraná were analyzed and two tafofauna and three ichnofauna were identified: Skolithos, archetypical and distal Cruziana. The paleontological analyses proposed here provide support for biostratigraphic correlations, paleoenvironmental and paleoecological interpretations of the outcrops prospected, assisting in the evaluation of the quality of the shales of the Ponta Grossa Formation from the point of view of hydrocarbon generation. REGIONAL disparities ,SCIENTIFIC knowledge ,PRIVATE schools ,HIGHER education - Abstract
The advance in the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge around the world has been causing an increase in public actions to contribute to decision makers at specific levels of competence. Within this context, this study aims to analyze the impact of investments in public policies at the beginning of the academic research chain in Brazil, that is, scientific initiation and regional disparities about it. This research has a qualitative nature and is based on information obtained from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. As a result of this analysis, it was found that, despite the existence of a legal basis that protects the North, Northeast and Midwest regions, regional disparities are still critical. Additionally, the participation of private Higher Education Institutions in the Scientific Initiation scholarship system is still low, which is mainly due to the low quality of the projects presented by these institutions. Thus, more effective actions to reduce disparities and increase the quality of research in private Higher Education Institutions, such as, for example, the use of clear criteria and scripts in the notices for the evaluation of research projects, must be adopted by the governmental sphere of public policies to foster research in Brazil. The tomato plant for industrial processing is a vegetable highly relevant in Brazilian agribusiness. Knowledge on the agronomic and scientific production of the culture is highly important for new strategies of culture and trade and for further studies to supplement the deficiencies in the Brazilian production chain. Current analysis retrieved data on the general features of the produce and of tomato hybrids for industrial processing commercialized in Brazil and a survey on the scientific production with regard to the theme. A bibliographic survey was undertaken on the evolution of tomato culture for industrial processing in Brazil. The number of firms which commercialize seeds and the characteristics of hybrids in Brazil were quantified to evaluate the evolution of production. Scopus databases were researched by keywords "industrial tomato processing" for the 1969-2019 period. Brazil is the greatest producer of tomatoes in South America and Goiás is the state with most cultivation, featuring the municipalities of Cristalina, Itaberaí, Morrinhos, Piracanjuba and Vianópolis with the highest production rates. Eleven firms commercialize seeds in Brazil, mostly with international headquarters. Fruits have a mass between 80 and 240 g and culture cycle varies between 90 and 120 days after transplanting. They show resistance mainly to Fusarium spp., Verticilium spp. and Meloidogyne spp. During the last decades, there has been a growth in the literature on tomato culture for industrial processing, with Italy as the country with most publications. Subareas Phytotechnology and Food Science are the most interesting themes for researchers. In Brazil, teaching and research institutes dedicated to such studies lie in the midwestern and southeastern region of the country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: We present a systematic review of the biology of the termite Constrictotermes cyphergaster and its relationships with guests in South America, addressing issues concerning the research knowledge that has been accumulated and the gaps that still need to be filled regarding this termite, as well as its relationships with other organisms and with the environment. Termites have global distributions and play important roles in most ecosystems, often with high nest densities and interesting associations with other organisms. Constrictotermes cyphergaster, is a termite endemic to South America, widely distributed and very conspicuous, and has therefore been considered a good model for filling in gaps in general termite ecology and their relationships with other organisms (e.g., termitophily). A systematic review (content and bibliometric analyses) was used to gather all published scientific knowledge related to C. cyphergaster as well as to observe trends, verify gaps, and direct new perspectives for future studies of this species. We identified 54 studies, of which more than 50% were published in the last five years (28 articles). The majority of the articles investigated the relationships between C. cyphergaster and macroorganisms (44.4%), followed by specific aspects of its biology (25.9%). The collaboration network revealed that links between researchers are still limited and modular, but trending topics have changed over time. Additionally, there are differences in the aims of the studies being carried out in the Caatinga and Cerrado domains, with some information focusing only on one of those environments. Our results show that some gaps in the biology and ecology of C. cyphergaster remain to be explored, although collaborative efforts between researchers open opportunities for suggesting future studies that would make relevant contributions to the general knowledge of termites. Natural ecosystems are under severe threat worldwide and environmental policies are essential to minimize present and future impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem services and climate change. The New Forest Act in Brazil is the main policy to protect native vegetation in private lands, which comprise 54% of the remaining Brazilian native vegetation. However, conflicts between environmental and agricultural concerns in its implementation demand for balanced solutions based on scientific evidence. To face the challenge of applying science in environmental policy establishment, we developed a scientific project funded by the São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP) to support the implementation of the New Forest Act in São Paulo State, as part of the Biota/FAPESP Program. The project was conducted differently from a regular research project: the broad objective was to provide scientific support to the State's implementation of the New Forest Act, based on a participatory interaction among stakeholders to build specific objectives, methods, and discussion of results, within an interdisciplinary and intersectoral research team. Here, we present the lessons learned during and after the four years of the research project development to evaluate how scientific knowledge can be produced and adopted in the implementation of a specific environmental policy. We present the main outcomes and the challenges faced in trying to include scientific data in the decision-making process. We also present current and future challenges in the New Forest Act implementation that could be solved with scientific evidence. The lessons learned showed that even designing the project in order to meet the needs to support the implementation of the environmental policy, avoiding difficulties normally pointed out by similar projects, there was a great difficulty for scientific contributions to be adopted in the decision-making process. Most of the scientific information and advice, even after discussion and common understanding among a diverse stakeholder group, were ignored or over-ruled in the final decision-making phases. In Brazil, many anthropologists are encouraged to act for the benefit of minority groups, assuming an activist role in conducting research on and with them. Yet efforts to integrate these dual roles are undermined by the continued separation of scientific knowledge production processes from other scholar activist activities. In this article, I seek to contend this separation by reflecting on my work as a volunteer in medios libres (the "free media"). With this form of activism, I sought to support the Mexican Indigenous social movement Modevite alongside my doctoral research, in a process of double contention. I reflect on the possibilities of rethinking the activism–academia dichotomy in knowledge production and on how we can produce knowledge that is more strategic for the people we engage with. Technoscientific practices establish knowledge, attributions, meanings, and properties production. The production of scientific knowledge in modern societies involves intersectoral work by universities and research institutes, private initiative, and government. The article aims to contextualize the development of Brazilian rural sciences. The structuring of this procedure in bibliographic research will be organized into three topics to develop scientific discussions: concepts of agrarian sciences, historical analysis and data on Agrarian Sciences in Brazilian universities. The source of research for state-of-the-art publications is the bank of theses where the search term is "agricultural sciences". First highlight addressed is the purpose of Agrarian Sciences that since ancient times, scientists have perfected their knowledge to increase production. evolution is such that they are subdivided into several segments with the respective technological priorities. The second approach involved shows that Agrarian Sciences was the main educational base in Brazil, which was installed at the end of the 19th century. With the prominence that Brazil needed the expansion of crops, the Graduate Programs focused on agriculture were inaugurated in the third highlight, the practical results of the state of the art indicate the predominance (even expected) of Agrarian Sciences both in the areas of evaluation and in the areas of knowledge, with values estimated at 88.21% and 86.90%, respectively, of the publications collected. In this article, we aim to contribute to research on the meaning of experiences by studying families visiting zoos - specifically in the context of Latin America. To this end, in this case study, we investigate conversations that occurred during family visits to Parque das Aves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil). The results show that families had conversations that were scientific in nature, frequently naming bird species, and commenting on their behaviors and habits. However, few comments truly deepened the discussions of and reflections on biological and ecological scientific knowledge. Conversations centered around the reading of informative panels, emotional connections, and previous experiences enhanced the families' creation of meaning. Our findings suggest a missed opportunity for interpretation to use linkages between the observed birds and visitors' daily lives to enhance emotional connections with these species and to deeper key concepts about conservation of biodiversity. The field of Neuroscience has experienced a growing interest in recent decades, which has led to an exponential growth in the amount of related information made available online as well as the market for Neuroscience-related courses. While this type of knowledge can be greatly beneficial to people working in science, health and education, it can also benefit individuals in other areas. For example, neuroscience knowledge can help people from all fields better understand and critique information about new discoveries or products, and even make better education- and health-related decisions. Online platforms are fertile ground for the creation and spread of fake information, including misrepresentations of scientific knowledge or new discoveries (e.g., neuromyths). These types of false information, once spread, can be difficult to tear down and may have widespread negative effects. For example, even scientists are less likely to access retractions of peer-reviewed articles than the original discredited articles. In this study we surveyed general knowledge about neuroscience and the brain among volunteers in Brazil, Latin America's largest country. We were interested in evaluating the prevalence of neuromyths in this region, and test whether knowledge/neuromyth endorsement differs by age, region, and/or profession. To that end, we created a 30-item survey that was anonymously answered online by 1128 individuals. While younger people (20–29-year-olds) generally responded more accurately than people 60 and older, people in the North responded significantly worse than those in the South and Southeast. Most interestingly, people in the biological sciences consistently responded best, but people in the health sciences responded no better than people in the exact sciences or humanities. Furthermore, years of schooling did not correlate with performance, suggesting that quantity may surpass quality when it comes to extension or graduate-level course offerings. We discuss how our findings can help guide efforts toward improving access to quality information and training in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On-farm conservation characterized by cultivation by smallholder farmers in agricultural and quilombola (formed by descendants of Afro-Brazilian slaves) communities is a tool for the maintenance of seeds and genetic diversity. Smallholder farmers who grow local varieties in diversity centers and communities contribute to supporting the capacity of agricultural and food systems to adapt to adverse conditions. Widely cultivated in the Northeast region of Brazil, lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L), despite having relative economic and social importance, is little exploited in terms of conservation aspects. Based on a process of participatory interview, this article documents the knowledge of smallholder farmers associated with local varieties of this species, as well as the practices and strategies used for on-farm conservation in three producing areas of northeastern Brazil. The results revealed that farmers have a low level of education; the main factor for the loss of traditional knowledge is the disinterest of younger people in agriculture. The study highlights the importance of integrating scientific knowledge with traditional knowledge to develop sustainable agroecosystems, in which on-farm conservation is an alternative to diversify agriculture, but which requires government and private support to stimulate and enhance agricultural activities and the interaction among smallholder farmers. The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of "scientific reductionism", with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora. • The use of sweet potato leaves as eaten plants must be considered with caution. • Sweet potato leaves' essential oils were highly cytotoxic. • β-caryophyllene, β-copaene, γ- and β-elemene were the main compounds of these oils. • δ-Cadinene, and β- and α-caryophyllene may explain the aroma of the essential oils. • Synergic effects among compounds may explain the antioxidant potential of the oils. Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) leaves are commonly used as human foodstuff in some African and Asian countries. Scientific knowledge about the chemical composition and biological properties of these leaves is useful to allow humans to properly use this specific part of this plant. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, antioxidant and toxicological potentials of the essential oils obtained from the leaves of four cultivars of sweet potatoes (Batata Roxa, IAPAR 69, Beni Imo and Batata-doce Japonesa) grown in Brazil. Essential oils were isolated by hydrodistillation (100°C, 4 hours) and their components were analyzed by GC/MS and GC/FID techniques. The antioxidant activities and the toxicological potentials of these essential oils were determined by ABTS and Artemia salina assays, respectively. Twenty-three compounds were found in these essential oils, with the sesquiterpene group being the major one. The compounds β-caryophyllene, β-copaene, γ-elemene, and β-elemene were found in concentrations of 1.08 – 28.63% of the essential oil among cultivars. β-Caryophyllene, α-caryophyllene, and δ-cadinene may explain the characteristic aroma of these essential oils. Their moderate antioxidant capacities demonstrated by the mean IC 50(ABTS) value of (2.53 ± 0.27) mg mL−1 could be explained by the synergistic effects of α-cadinol, α-caryophyllene, γ-elemene, δ-cadinene, germacrene B, and phytol. The LD 50(ASB) values (minimum: 0.60 ppm for cv. Beni Imo; maximum: 4.78 ppm for cv. Batata Roxa) are probably associated with δ-cadinene, α-cadinol, phytol, and α-caryophyllene. The high cytotoxicity attributed to this kind of essential oil shows that its use as a natural food preservative can be harmful to human health. The use of sweet potato leaves as a human foodstuff must be also considered with caution. As far as we are aware, no studies on the essential oils of these cultivars of sweet potato grown in Brazil were previously reported in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Historically, sanitary emergencies unleash public health strategies based on a prescriber and verticalized campaign model. Through a territory-based perspective that values and puts in dialogue the popular knowledge, the popular education for health advocates for the strengthening of social participation to deal with this damage. This essay aims to apprehend the limits and possibilities of social technology in popular health education by the analysis of an extension project that promoted a continuing education process with health agents at the Complexo do Alemão, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the zika virus context. It was a exploratory qualitative research by a documental analysis of this extension project. To investigate, thematize and problematize the territory emergencies through the freirean approach could help to develop prevention and promotion activities that, at least, were more complex than usual and territorybased as well. However, some participants also maintained the classical absolutization of the ignorance by the popular class and the excessive valorization of scientific knowledge, which refers to two challenges for replicating popular education methods: the educator background and the temporality of educative actions. This article deals with the new configurations of information and communication in the domain of health knowledge in Brazil, by the intercurrence of two concomitant factors: the increasingly powerful increment of technical mediations in the digital environment; the health crisis caused by the pandemic of the new coronavirus - the SARS-CoV-2. To study the domain at this critical moment, we considered the scientific society that represents it - the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (Abrasco) - and the way it promoted communication among peers in the scientific field and between them and society, through the "Abrasco Agoras", a set of webinars bringing together researchers, professionals, health authorities, representatives of organizations and social movements to discuss the issues related to the pandemic moment. We started with a theoretical treatment of Domain Analysis, to then approach the new modalities of scientific info-communication in the era of E-science and pandemic. The results of the analysis of a sample of the "Abrasco Agoras" show that the intensive use of digital devices and the accelerated rhythm of scientific knowledge production demand reflections on the health domain that take into account the very way of functioning of the scientific field, the status of researchers and health professionals, the processes of production, mediation, diffusion and appropriation of knowledge, the modes of information and communication among peers and between peers and society. SCIENTIFIC literature , *SCIENTIFIC knowledge , *COVID-19 , *COVID-19 pandemic , *KNOWLEDGE representation (Information theory) , *BIBLIOMETRICS - Abstract
In the past two years, science has been mobilized around studies centered on the new pandemic phenomenon known as COVID-19, a variation of the coronavirus with higher transmission capacity and higher mortality. Thus, as a way of investigating the state of the art of this topic in the field of Information Science, this research sought to answer the following question: what is the Brazilian scientific production in Information Science regarding the COVID-19 pandemic? As main justification, we understand that systematically identifying and disseminating those studies may help the construction of an appropriate theoretical analysis on the theme in the national scope. To support our research theoretically and methodologically, we reserved a section to explore Domain Analysis (DA). Proposed by Hjørland and Albrechtsen (1995) around Information Science, this approach allows us to analyze domains of knowledge from their social interactions as discursive communities. Then, we describe the context of information in health, specifically the COVID-19 pandemic context. This is a quali-quantitative research: we made a textual analysis of the keywords found in the articles that make up the corpus and applied bibliometric criteria to identify occurrence patterns of the most productive authors and journals. Being a descriptiveexploratory research about COVID-19 in Brazil Information Science literature, we aimed to describe how the pandemic phenomenon influenced textual production in this context, seeking to better understand the theme and looking for reflections about the subject. It was possible to infer that the scientific dissemination of knowledge around this theme is closely related to research in information in health, and it even includes a new term in this perspective: "infodemia" (infodemic), a term that is related to the vastness of information made available via the web, especially on social media. In addition to that, the incidence frequency of terms such as comunidade (community) and competência em informação (information competence) enhances the significance of the area of IS in studies oriented toward knowledge organization and representation in face of the overload of information. This manuscript aims to map and characterize, through knowledge routes, the evolution of scientific studies on coronavirus based on papers developed by researchers affiliated with research institutions in Brazil. Inspired by the KDD processes, the publication's data were obtained from Web of Science until 2021. Then the citation network was built and, using SPLC algorithm, the knowledge routes were designed. The results showed the high concentration of publications after 2020, demonstrating the concern and commitment of Brazilian researchers in investigations on this topic. The results also showed priority areas such as medical, followed by social that approach measures to contain the virus spread. It also identified two knowledge routes with different characteristics, reinforcing the scope of knowledge related to the topic. Thus, this paper contributes to the literature by presenting the evolution of scientific knowledge, reiterating the quality and production capacity of researchers affiliated to Brazilian institutions. It also contributes by presenting the most researched topics and pointing out the profiles of the researchers involved. Finally, it complements the current literature by ratifying the use of network analysis as a tool for representing and investigating knowledge, in addition to mapping and analyzing the evolution of knowledge. This study aims to present aspects of approximation between sociological studies on knowledge, science and scientific knowledge and Information Science, found in the periodic scientific production of a universe of 98 Productivity Fellows in Brazil. We aimed to identify the referent authors from the sociological fields that focus on knowledge, science, and scientific knowledge featured in this production; to highlight similarities or differences between the researchers and the referent authors; and to diachronically analyze the presence and coupling of the authors from these three sociological fields in the periodical production of the PQ fellows. As methodological procedures, we situated the PQs within the fields, starting with a priori classification, and identified the presence of these authors by performing searches in Brapci, based on their scientific productions, pointing out the coupling relations between citing authors and the most cited referents. Results show Castells, Bourdieu, Cronin, Popper, and Merton as the most cited sociologists, and we also produced an adjacency matrix to verify the most cited sociologists in each of the fields. We built the network of referents to expose the coupling relations between them and the PQs. We conclude this article by highlighting the presence of the authors cited in the PQs' productions in all categories, and the identification of the dynamics of scientific production within its movements, based on the analytical procedures.
