Quantitative analysis of morphological characters of the head was used to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the tropicopolitan bug Triatoma rubrofasciata (De Geer) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and seven species of Old World Triatoma. Multivariate analysis demonstrates that T. rubrofasciata and the Old World species have a high degree of similarity with Nearctic Triatoma species, particularly T. rubida (Uhler). We interpret this to imply a common ancestry for these groups. Dissemination of T. rubrofasciata and subsequent derivation of the Old World species of Triatoma is deduced to have occurred over a period of not more than 350 years.

Vector control strategies against indigenous species is not easy, due to their capacity to reinvade treated premises from sylvatic ecotopes. Between August 1996 and December 1997 we conducted a study on reinfestation of houses after spraying in a county in the State of Ceará. Of 277 houses examined, 113 (40.8%) were infested (21.7% intradomiciliary and 35.4% peridomiciliary). Of the 433 Triatominae collected, 207 were Triatoma brasiliensis (49% of which intradomiciliary, with a mean of 1.8 insects/house) and 226 were Triatoma pseudomaculata (97% peridomiciliary). The age structure of the two indicated a univoltine development cycle for T. brasiliensis and two cycles per year for T. pseudomaculata. Four months after spraying with deltamethrin SC 25mg ia/m2, 9.7% of the houses were still positive, mainly with peridomestic infestations. Intradomiciliary wall bioassays showed persistence of the insecticide up to 9 months after spraying. Considering the high potential for recolonization of treated premises from sylvatic foci, we propose an operational strategy combining traditional evaluations and community-based surveillance with increased selective interventions and community education.

Among the triatomines considered as secondary in the epidemiology of Chagas disease, Rhodnius neglectus is frequently captured in artificial ecotopes, especially peridomiciliary ones, rarely producing colonies indoors. Nevertheless, the presence of breeding colonies in houses was unquestionably demonstrated in some areas of the State of Goiás, Brazil. Previous isoenzyme comparisons of this species with morphologically close triatomines, such as R. prolixus, R. robustus or R. nasutus, did not produce definitive conclusions because of doubt about the geographical origin of the R. neglectus. We present here, for the first time, the isoenzyme profile of topotypes of R. neglectus. In addition, wild caught specimens from the type locality, Uberaba (Minas Gerais, Brazil), were compared to wild caught specimens from Jaraguá (Goiás, Brazil), where R. neglectus is more frequently reported invading houses. We used isoenzyme, morphology and morphometry analysis. Neither morphological nor enzymatic differences were found between areas, but metric, size-related divergence was evidenced between them.

DNA sequence comparison of 412 base-pairs fragments of the mitochondrial cytochrome B gene was used to infer the genetic structure of nine geographical Triatoma infestans populations and their phylogenetic relationship with T. melanosoma and T. brasiliensis. T. infestans and T. melanosoma were compared by morphometry, allozyme and cytogenetic analyses, as well as subjected to reciprocal crosses, in order to clarify the taxonomic status of the latter. No differences were found to distinguish the two species and the crosses between them yielded progeny. T. infestans populations presented four haplotypes that could be separated in two clusters: one formed by the samples from Bolivia (Andes and Chaco) and the other formed by samples from Argentina and Brazil. Silvatic and domestic T. infestans populations from Bolivia (Andes) were genetically identical.

Dispersive flight by Triatoma infestans was modelled by assuming either unidirectional flight in a straight line, or that flight followed a pattern of 'random walk' analogous to two-dimensional Brownian motion. Parameter estimates for the models were derived from previous fieldwork in Argentina and Brazil. Calculated probabilities of houses becoming infested over a 1 year period were compared with actual changes of house infestation in a small farming community in central Brazil. It was found that infestation could be explained partly by the dispersive flight of the bugs according to the distances between houses, and partly by the predisposition of houses to infestation by virtue of their construction, since houses with cracked mud walls were particularly susceptible to infestation. Infested houses lying more than 200 m from uninfested houses appeared to make an almost negligible contribution to infestation of the uninfested houses. This suggests that buffer zones of this size around treated areas could help to minimize the risk of reinfestation after treatment.

Twenty old houses in a rural area of central Brazil were sampled monthly for Triatoma infestans during 16 months. The samples indicated peak adult emergence between January and May, preceded by peak emergence of stage V, IV and III nymphs respectively. Stage I and II nymphs were rarely taken in the samples. A much smaller peak of adult emergence occurred in September; thus the two peaks of adult emergence during the year were consistent with the approximately six months duration of egg-to-adult development usually recorded in laboratory studies. During January, 1977, when the study began, all houses were searched for dead bugs, exuviae, eggs and eggshells. These samples were used to calculate stage mortalities, from which a simple life-table was constructed. These data were combined with laboratory data concerning stage development times and female longevity and fecundity. Sensitivity analysis of the life-table showed it to be most sensitive to small changes in daily mortality rate and total egg-to-adult development time. The data were used to advance an hypothesis that the size of domestic populations of T. infestans is mainly controlled by changes in the egg-to-adult development time and, to a lesser extent, by changes in female reproductivity. Both these factors are in turn controlled by the nutritional status of the bug population, which, if the supply of food, i.e. number of hosts, is constant, is dependent upon the density of the bug population. It is argued that this mechanism of density regulation functions within limits set by the prevailing ambient temperature.

Using marked male Triatoma infestans allowed to escape and fly on a little-used airport in Brazil and salt flats in Argentina, 33 of 169 flew in the former and 28 of 528 in the latter experiment. Many of the bugs which flew had been classed as poorly fed. The proportion of bugs which flew was in reasonable agreement with predictions based on laboratory observations. It was shown that in the field male bugs are capable of flights in excess of 100 m. The method described served the purpose of this experiment well but would not be suitable for distances greater than 100 to 200m.
