AD, atopic dermatitis. gl As a quality control of the study, the prevalence of psoriasis in the sample resulted in 1.1% (0.9%-1.2%), which is similar to previous population-based estimates in Brazil (1.1%-1.5%).[9] The main characteristics of AD patients are presented in Table 1. Dear Editor, Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a highly prevalent chronic inflammatory disease and inflicts a major burden on patients and healthcare systems.[[1]] AD prevalence varies by geographic region and age group, ranging from 5% to 20% among toddlers, and 2% to 10% in adults.[[3]] The prevalence of AD in Latin America is unknown. However, the prevalence of AD in children and adolescents was higher than in our survey (18%).[3] Furthermore, the prevalence of AD among schoolchildren in Ecuador, a high-altitude Andean city, also surpassed our findings (28%).[10] Actually, some AD patients may have no flexural involvement, which can underestimate telephone-based surveys based on the ISAAC criteria.
