CAPITAL movements ,FOSSIL fuels ,PUBLIC investments ,FACTORIES ,ETHANOL ,PRIVATE companies - Abstract
Due to the environmental impacts of fossil fuels, agro-industrial residues have become a viable alternative for a more ecological production of fuels. This research aims to investigate Brazil's participation in the technology developments by using biomass to produce second-generation ethanol. Searches were carried out using technological information contained in patent documents applied worldwide. The results showed an increase in the number of patents applied between 2006 and 2015, but not enough for the sector to reach technological maturity to deal with the great challenges faced by industrial plants on a commercial scale. Public investments have directly impacted the creation of inventions associated with second-generation ethanol. Among the players, Chinese public organizations stand out, as well as North American companies and, to a much less extent, Brazilian universities. Most private companies originated from traditional petrochemical sectors, evidencing a strategic movement of capital already established to meet the growing trends towards biofuels. Despite being the second-largest ethanol producer globally, Brazil has low national technological development. Even though a recent downturn was felt, it is concluded that the sector faces a favorable scenario in the production of biofuels for the coming decades, based on new technological routes. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether exposure to information about physical activity and its barriers can increase the level of physical activity and reduce the time exposed to sedentary behaviors in high school students involved in integrated professional and technological education during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. This quasi experimental study was conducted with integrated education high school students, divided into two groups: Intervention Group (IG; n = 59) and Control Group (CG; n = 54). Physical activity and sedentary behavior were identified and measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire pre-and post-intervention for both groups. IG students received educational material thrice a week for four weeks. The focus of the material was the importance of physical activity and need to reduce the time exposed to sedentary behavior. The results revealed that IG students showed an average daily reduction of 47.14 min in time exposed to sedentary behaviors, while the CG students showed an increase of 31.37 min. Despite this, the intervention was not effective in improving physical activity levels in the IG and the mean reduction in the time exposed to sedentary behavior was not significant (p = 0.556). The intervention was ineffective in increasing the practice of physical activity and reducing the time exposed to sedentary behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ORGANIC wastes ,WASTE management ,ORGANIC waste recycling ,AGRICULTURAL wastes ,CLOSED loop systems ,KALMAN filtering - Abstract
Family farmers in Brazil could diversify their sources of income and improve agriculture practices by adopting circular economy principles on their farms. Closed-loop technological systems can be used to manage organic waste and produce fertiliser and biogas thereby generating revenue. Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a proven technology that can produce digestate (i.e. fertiliser) and biogas from organic waste, although digestate application in soil and crops without treatment can have adverse effects. However, in practice, there is a lack of knowledge about the benefits of recycling organic waste in farming communities in Brazil. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to provide conceptual design configurations of closed-loop systems that manage organic waste and generate revenue for small farms in Brazil. A literature review of selected technologies and interviews with Brazilian family farmers were used to inform the components of the proposed conceptual designs. The proposed designs are based on circular economy principles, incorporating AD, pyrolysis for biochar, hydroponics and vermifiltration in various configurations. A complete closed-loop system consisting of a 7.5 m
3 digester, pyrolysis unit, a combined hydroponic and vermifilter unit and a shredder is estimated to cost around USD$1600 (R$ 6600). The flexibility of the proposed systems has the potential to increase resilience and income for small-scale farmers, whilst encouraging good practices for waste management. The conceptual designs can be used as a basis for further research and development of small-scale organic waste management solutions in Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Since 1532, when the first sugarcane seedling arrived commercially in Brazil, the sugar-energy sector has not stopped growing. It started in the southeast region, then intensified in the northeast and finally settled in the center of the south of the country. These were different stages that accompany the demand for global development in search of food and energy, with socio-environmental respect. We started just with the production of sugar and from 1975 onwards the production of ethanol took the focus of the sector, aiming at the replacement of fossil fuels by ethanol, for mobility, which in 2003 can be used by mixing gasoline and ethanol in any proportion in vehicles flex. In 2009, an increase in the production of bioelectricity from the burning of bagasse significantly contributed to alleviating the scarcity of water in the electricity generating reservoirs. From 2015 onwards, new products obtained from biotechnological activities began to appear on the market, opening a new frontier for this area, using sugarcane juice as a culture medium, a very rich source of carbohydrates and of low value. We are finally entering the era of green hydrogen from ethanol and biomethane from the biodigestion of vinasse and filter cake, which will be used in fuel cells for world mobility. As can be seen, the sugar-energy chain is always reinventing itself to meet the demands and needs of the planet, greatly contributing to the construction of a cleaner, fairer and more perfect world. Purpose: This article is aimed at improving understanding of the possibilities and implications of using patents as a teaching instrument for universities in developing countries in order to enable undergraduate business students to discuss critical issues associated with the commercialization of technological innovations. Design/methodology/approach: This study is based on an explorative case of an experiential teaching exercise involving undergraduate students addressing the development of business plans addressing the commercialization of patents. In this way, we proposed the POSTE model to provide a pathway to knowledge creation by integrating entrepreneurial competences of entrepreneurship competences with existing practices. Findings: Given the complex nature of the patenting process, the experiential exercise proposed by this study contributes to enhance IP commercialization capabilities of undergraduate students by simulating decision-making regarding market size, user requirements, product pricing, competitors, substitute products, time-to-market, product production arrangements and strategic use of the terms of a patent. Research limitations/implications: One limitation of this research involves the impossibility of completely addressing the venture launch gap. Despite the realistic learning experience based on a real patent, as students do not own the intellectual property rights (IPRs) associated with the patents used in the course, it is not possible to implement the business models developed during the course. Practical implications: Since patent documents are freely available and companies are increasingly dependent on intellectual property (IP) assets to remain competitive, our study provides evidence that patents can provide a rich source of information that can be used to simulate venture creations by taking into consideration economical, strategical, and legal skills needed to bridge the technology commercialization gap. Social implications: Given the lack of courses addressing intellectual property in the wide majority of Brazilian undergraduate courses, the teaching experience described in this study contributes to raise the sense of urgency for the commercialization of patents among college students, as a means of turning technology into business. Originality/value: Despite of the growing correlation between IP and competitiveness, teaching methods relying on IP data, such as patents, industrial designs and trademarks, in research institutions located in developing countries have received limited treatment in the extant literature. The objective of this work is to understand the relations between university coordinators of undergraduate courses and technologies in digital culture. The context of the research is a private university, looking at seven coordinators of undergraduate courses and their relations with technologies in digital culture. It is part of a larger research project also involving teachers and students. At this time, focusing on the coordinators, we used online questionnaire available on google drive and interviews. The two instruments focused on: personal information; initial and ongoing training processes; teaching performance; relationships between teachers / coordinators / students / computers / internet; and, pedagogical appropriations. The produced data show the coordinators' awareness about the huge universe of information available by the digital context and about their challenge of gradually integrating more technologies into their management and also teaching activities. We emphasize that the coordinators pointed as important not only technical issues related to internet access as well as its speed, but also the necessity of different ways of appropriations of technologies looking at new and more qualitative proposals of management and teaching and learning. The research has revealed aspects that deserve expanding continuing education in order to create conditions among university coordinators, teachers and students for establishing dialogues and spaces about education with technologies, influenced by this new digital culture that reflects directly on different education in contemporary times. Nowadays, Industry 4.0 is the fourth manufacturing Revolution, the rise of new digital industrial technology that will lead to greater efficiencies and growth, become more flexible and productive, changing traditional production relationships between human and machine. According to ABDI, it is estimated that such manufacturing revolution will create a macroeconomic shift of USD15 trillion in the next fifteen years throughout the world. Brazil represents only 2% of industries that adopted this new technology. The present study was carried out through a questionnaire applied to executives of seven multinational companies in the automobile sector, located in the metropolitan region of Sorocaba-São Paulo. The results presented show that Industry 4.0 will be important for survival and guarantee competitiveness with national or international competitors. On the other hand, such companies still depend on their headquarters and they need to change traditional production relationships among suppliers and customers. This survey has shown that Brazil is still starting slowly and this might affect industrial competitiveness in a short period of time. Therefore, they will have to speed up to keep up with the pace. This paper presents a brief historical background about the different methodological conceptions that guided the teaching of reading and the written Portuguese language, bringing to the scene the complexity of this process for these children and evidencing the difficulty of systematic teaching of the Portuguese language written also for deaf children. Then, it shows how digital resources and technologies are fundamental elements in the present time when we consider reading and writing and their respective teaching processes (whether for deaf or hearing children), starting from the presentation of the trajectory adopted for the teaching of the language written in Brazil. Finally, it presents what would be the implications for the studies dedicated to reflecting, based on Soares's studies, on the "reinvention of literacy", which is urgent today from the appropriation of digital resources - as well as the implications for research focused on the literacy of deaf children, more specifically. Biochar has been intensively researched worldwide. In Brazil, there is a variety of feedstock production that can be turned into soil amendments of high performance through biochar conversion, especially solid wastes. However, advances in biochar research in Brazil have not been systematically evaluated to indicate possible gaps and suggest future research for eco‐friendly applications. Thus, in this work we evaluated biochar properties and effects on air, water, and soil quality based on data gathered from researches performed in Brazil. Biochar has been mainly evaluated as soil conditioner (37%), material characterization (17%), water treatment (12%), and greenhouse gases emissions (9%). Based on the data synthesis of 68 feedstocks used for biochar production, we observed that the pyrolysis temperature profoundly affects biochar properties. Meta‐analysis indicated benefits of biochar addition to soils for chemical, physical, microbiological and biochemical attributes that have resulted in increases in root growth (+30%), and plant shoots (+45%). Pyrolysis temperature and feedstock are key choices to design biochar properties aiming to retain dyes, aromatic hydrocarbon, pesticides, and metals in water and wastewater treatment. It was also observed an increase in CO2 and a decrease in N2O emissions after biochar application to soils in short‐term experiments. Although there is a growing interest in the development of electrochemical sensors and biochar‐based fertilizers, technological applications of biochar are still incipient in Brazil. Future research should prioritize long‐term and mechanistically evaluations of biochar under field conditions and the development of eco‐friendly technological applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The integration of technology in teaching and learning mathematics is widely recommended. While noting an improvement in technological resources in schools, particularly in Brazil and Portugal, this trend is not accompanied by an improvement in the pedagogical use of technology in the classroom. Some OECD reports point to the need to continue investing in teacher training to a pedagogical use of technology. In this article, I present the case of a mathematics student teacher with a solid basic training in technologies that show difficulties in integrating technology in their practice. Mentoring is the strategy adopted to support this student teacher to integrate the technology in his practice. The constant support in the classroom with technology was instrumental in promoting the success of the student teachers in the use of technological resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ELECTRICITY markets , *RENEWABLE energy sources , *GRID energy storage , *ELECTRICITY , *REFORMS , *POWER resources , *SMART power grids - Abstract
With the current worsening of climate change-associated risks, the transition to low-carbon energy sources has become a global priority. In this context, the advances in the implementation of smart grids, which, in addition to greater efficiency and resilience, also allow greater penetration of renewable distributed energy resources, are becoming increasingly important. However, the necessary investments will be colossal. Many specialists see the process of opening up the electric energy markets as essential to boosting these new technologies. Greater decentralization of the decision-making process can potentially promote greater scalability. However, not all liberalization reforms have led to good results. Several researchers have been evaluating experiences in different countries. Brazil, a country with continental dimensions and peculiar characteristics, already counts with a mostly renewable electric energy generation mix. In recent decades, however, it has become increasingly dependent on fossil fuel sources. Brazil has been conducting a process of opening the electric energy market since the 1990s. This process has faced a series of barriers. This article presents a critical bibliographic review of the Brazilian Power System history and its ongoing opening process, its possible successes and errors, as well as its perspectives and challenges.
