The journey to Brazil undertaken by a generation of young Italian directors initiated a phase of artistic renewal in São Paulo during the 1950s. This article reveals the connections between the projects and theatre, television and cinema productions of some of the protagonists of that extraordinary adventure by tracing the power plays that marked the period. As they understood, it was a time when one would believe in the possibility of implementing a modern theatre supported by the state and an art cinema, expected to be adored by a public and which still had to be formed. These goals united a generation and motivated its migration to the other side of the Atlantic. It was a 'mission' based on the belief that the arts, especially the performing arts, should be tools for the democratic emancipation of the public and not just occasions for its entertainment. This study aims to identify explanatory factors to increase the agricultural performance of Brazilian and Australian sugarcane mills. The relevance of Brazil and Australia for the sugar industry motivated the development this study based on the most important factors in both countries responsible for increasing the efficiency in sugarcane production. Thus, this study is designed to assess the hypothesis that there are a few explanatory variables that are deeply responsible for the agricultural efficiency in the sugar-energy sector. As a specific objective, it proposes a DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) model that seeks to optimize the production of Total Recoverable Sugar (TRS) by planted area, and simultaneously, minimizes mineral and vegetable impurities. The sample consists of 82 observations from 32 sugarcane mills. An agricultural efficiency study was performed using the two-stage DEA, in which the evaluated mills according to the level of efficiency in the proposed model. Then, a Multiple Linear Regression Analysis was performed to identify the variables with the greatest influence on the performance of the mills in terms of efficiency. The results revealed six relevant variables for increasing the agricultural performance in the production of sugarcane: rainfall (mm weekly), chopped cane delivery (%), delivery time (h), borer (%), air humidity (%), and rods in raw wine (× 105/mL). Finally, semi-structured interviews with Brazilian and Australian experts in the sugar-energy sector allowed the identification of five other relevant complementary factors that were unavailable in the database: genetic variety, agricultural cultivation activities, edaphoclimatic factors, renewal of sugarcane fields and irrigation system. The results of this study were grouped into the dimensions of environment, yield, and impurities, providing quantification and better understanding of the identified explanatory factors and the agricultural performance in terms of production efficiency, offering fundamental information that enables managers to make decisions and prioritize the aspects that contribute more significantly to the increase in agricultural productivity of the planted area. The agricultural and industrial indicators that contribute to the efficiency of sugarcane mills were investigated in this study. A two-stage Data Envelopment Analysiswith output approach was applied to 271 mills for the data from the 2006/2007 season to the 2015/2016 season. The first stage consisted of the elaboration of two efficiency models using the total milling yield of the crop (t) and the amount of total recoverable sugars (t) as the input variables and the productions of sugar (t) and ethanol (m3) as the output. The second stage identified the production process variables significantly influencing the efficiency through multiple linear regression. In addition, with the help of sugarcane experts, ten variables related to the efficiencies of the agricultural and industrial processes of sugar and ethanol production, which contribute to the overall productivity of the sugar-energy units, and 40 best practices were developed to observe, improve, and control these indicators in order to increase the global efficiency of the agroindustrial production units. • Best practices improve competitiveness of a production unit. • Improvements in agricultural sector affects directly the global efficiency. • Ten variables represent the most important control points in agroindustry plants. • Field, structural and operational factors set the agroindustrial best practices. • Adopt the best agroindustrial practices increase technical efficiency. Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the results of anatomic pulmonary resections performed by video-assisted thoracoscopy in Brazil. Methods: Thoracic surgeons (members of the Brazilian Society of Thoracic Surgery) were invited, via e-mail, to participate in the study. Eighteen surgeons participated in the project by providing us with retrospective databases containing information related to anatomic pulmonary resections performed by video-assisted thoracoscopy. Demographic, surgical, and postoperative data were collected with a standardized instrument, after which they were compiled and analyzed. Results: The surgeons provided data related to a collective total of 786 patients (mean number of resections per surgeon, 43.6). However, 137 patients were excluded because some data were missing. Therefore, the study sample comprised 649 patients. The mean age of the patients was 61.7 years. Of the 649 patients, 295 (45.5%) were male. The majority--521 (89.8%)--had undergone surgery for neoplasia, which was most often classified as stage IA. The median duration of pleural drainage was 3 days, and the median hospital stay was 4 days. Of the 649 procedures evaluated, 598 (91.2%) were lobectomies. Conversion to thoracotomy was necessary in 30 cases (4.6%). Postoperative complications occurred in 124 patients (19.1%), the most common complications being pneumonia, prolonged air leaks, and atelectasis. The 30-day mortality rate was 2.0%, advanced age and diabetes being found to be predictors of mortality. Conclusions: Our analysis of this representative sample of patients undergoing pulmonary resection by video-assisted thoracoscopy in Brazil showed that the procedure is practicable and safe, as well as being comparable to those performed in other countries. Aim: To evaluate reproducibility of visual exam under artificial lighting (VI) and DIAGNOdent™ (DD) exams, their validity and their association (VI+DD) in examining occlusal dental surfaces under epidemiological setting. Methods: One hundred and sixty five 12-year-old schoolchildren from public schools from Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, were examined under epidemiological setting using different diagnostic criteria (D1, D1+D3 and D3). Kappa statistics was adopted for reproducibility study, while sensibility, specificity and accuracy were adopted for validity study. Results: The intra/interexaminer Kappa for VI and DD exams at D1, D3 and D1+D3 criteria were 0.88/0.82 and 0.04/0.18, 0.91/0.85 and 0.36/0.35, 0.88/0.83 and 0.30/0.32, respectively. The VI was the most accurate exam at D1 (A=87.38%) and D1+D3 (A=82.45%) criteria, while VI+DD was the most accurate exam at D3 criterion (A=75.29%). Conclusions: Initial caries lesions can be satisfactorily detected by VI exam, while DD exam improved the VI exam sensitivity at D1 and D3 diagnostic criteria under epidemiological setting.
