The article focuses on Junior High School 22 in the Bronx, New York City, and its principal Shimon Waronker. Waronker is a member of the Lubavitch sect of Hasidic Judaism, making him an anomaly at his school, which serves a predominately black and Hispanic community. Since becoming principal in 2004, however, Waronker has steadily improved the school's performance. Once cited as both dangerous and a poor performer, the school is now rated one of the city's better junior high schools.
