The article presents a study which examines the relationship among acculturation, familismo, and HIV-related sexual risk behavior among 702 randomly selected Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Dominican teenagers in Bronx, New York City. Assent, consent and permission forms were distributed to adolescents and their mothers. The study used self-administered questionnaires in English and Spanish text to gather relevant data. The results show that familismo is connected to the sexual behavior of girls but not boys. It reveals that acculturation was not related to sexual behavior. It notes that communicated maternal expectation is a vital source in embracing familismo on the part of teenage girls.
