Introduction Hip fracture is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality among the elderly population. In Colombia there is a shortage of scientific literature on the perioperative management of this population of patients. Objective To describe the perioperative management of hip fracture patients at a tertiary university hospital in Cali, Colombia. Methods An observational study was conducted with relational scope of a historical cohort of patients with hip fracture who underwent surgical management between January 2018 and June 2022. A non-probability sampling method was used and contingency tables were designed aimed at describing the relationship between the patients' characteristics and the postoperative outcomes. Results 235 patients were included, of which 57 % were males. The mean age was 79 years and 49.8 % were classified as ASA III or higher. Spinal anesthesia was the most commonly used technique in 63.4 % of the cases. The most frequent outcomes were delirium in 17.9 %, and acute kidney failure in 6.8 %. 83.4 % of the patients underwent surgery within 48 hours of admission to the emergency department and intra-hospital mortality was 2.6 %. Conclusions The results of this study provide relevant information to identify opportunities for improvement and their implementation, such as the reduction in the time elapsed until surgical management and the development of care protocols in the region. Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has led to the cancellation of non-emergent surgeries in order to optimize the use of resources. Once the elective medical services are restored, a technical and ethical strategy becomes critical to select candidate patients for elective surgery. Objective: To describe the results from the implementation of MeNTS (Medically Necessary Timesensitive Procedures), FI-CGA, and survey on COVID-19 symptoms Scales, as methods for the selection of patients who were candidates for elective surgery during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, in a third level institution in Cali, Colombia. Methods: The databases of the results on the administration of MeNTS, frailty index (FI-CGA) and COVID 19 symptoms scales in patients who were candidates for elective surgery in a third level clinic in Cali city, between March 1st and August 31st, 2020 were reviewed. Results: A total of 1,044 patients were included, of which 647 (62.0 %) were females, with a median age of 52 years (interquartile range [IQR] 38-62). 98 % of the patients were asymptomatic, the overall median score for MeNTS was 48 (IQR 44-52) and the average for FI-CGA was 0.0 (standard deviation 0.1). Conclusions: MeNTS, FI-CGA and the Symptoms Survey are easily accessible scales amidst the pandemic and are helpful to select patients with intermediate and low risk of perioperative morbidity in elective surgery during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Further studies are required to confirm these findings and to clarify the potential of these tools in the selection of patients that meet the high-risk criteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The preoperative visit is often the time to establish the anesthesiologist-patient relationship (APR). Frequently patients remember their surgeon but fail to remember who their anesthesiologist was and his/her key role in perioperative care. Using an opinion survey, the aim of this study was to analyze the current perception of outpatients (ASA I and II) about the APR during the immediate postoperative period. Design: Descriptive cross-sectional multicenter trial including four healthcare institutions between August 2011 and May 2012. Methods: 340 surveys were administered to ASA I and II adult subjects scheduled for outpatient surgery, with Aldrette recovery score of 10 prior to discharge. Results: Only 74.1% of the people acknowledged their anesthesiologist as a specialized physician. 21.2% were unaware of the professional training required to become an anesthesiologist and 99% of the patients said that it was gratifying to have the doctor who did the preoperative evaluation in the OR; however this only occurred in 35% of the cases. Conclusions: Notwithstanding the high level of outpatient satisfaction with their anesthetic care, some strategies are required to strengthen their perception about the specialty. The APR a preoperative evaluation for the surgical procedure, but should be more comprehensive. There is a need to establish closer links with the community to create awareness about the role of the anesthesiologist and his/her outstanding contribution to the patient's care and safety.
