- Abstract
This book is intended to provide reporters who cover court proceedings with a basic knowledge of the organization of California's courts and of the procedures they follow. It contains: material about court organization and jurisdiction, pretrial civil procedure, pretrial criminal procedure, and civil and criminal trial procedure; a legal bibliography; a history of the free press-fair trial movement in the United States; and an article on the current newsmen's shield law controversy. The document concludes with a joint declaration regarding news coverage of criminal proceedings in California, the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists, the Code of Judicial Ethics of the Conference of California Judges, and the Code of Judicial Conduct of the American Bar Association.
