Abstract

A survey of 142 Canadian and U.S. medical schools found almost all have faculty tenure systems; 9 limit tenure to basic science faculty. Over three-fourths define tenure to include some financial guarantee, which only rarely covers full salary/compensation. Pretenure probationary periods vary. Flexibility was a key policy feature. 2. The Influence of Character Sex on Young Children's Learning from Televison.

Abstract

The role of television in creating sex role attitudes in preschool children was examined. Boys and girls from two suburban nursery schools watched brief shows depicting male, female, and male and female puppets playing. In subsequent play the children's behavior was observed to see which sex was emulated most frequently. Both boys and girls tended to imitate the female model significantly more than the male model. These findings throw some doubt on the general assumption on the part of television producers that male models are strong identification figures and attract a wider audience than females. (JD)

A dichotomous key is presented to identify all genera of Mexican and Central American Anthonomini. Abstract

The influence of ethnolinguistic group membership, sex, and position level on terminal and instrumental value hierarchies was investigated. Value profile data from 690 Anglophones and 250 Francophones working coast-to-coast in the Public Service of Canada sector reflected high overall value similarity and parallelism across ethnolinguistic, sex, and position level groupings. At the same time the distinctiveness of the groups was noted. Francophones gave a greater importance to social value orientation, and Anglophones to a more personal one, while females emphasized a more interpersonal value orientation and males a more immediate need gratification orientation. Supervisors stressed a more delayed "work ethic" gratification orientation, while recruit level employees stressed a more interpersonal immediate need-gratification orientation. Results are discussed in view of multiple past and present primary and secondary socialization experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
