The evolution of submarine canyons is primarily controlled by turbidity currents, which erode and fill them over time; however, many other hydrodynamic currents operate within canyons. Bottom currents from these other hydrodynamic processes, including internal tides, can be dominant processes, but their deposits are seldom recognized in sediment cores or the rock record. This study combines autonomous underwater vehicle swath bathymetry imagery and sub‐bottom profiles, high‐resolution sediment core analyses (X‐ray imagery and thin sections), and previously collected seabed video and flow measurements within Logan Canyon head (eastern Canada) to provide a detailed, modern record of facies associated with hydrodynamic processes in a canyon head. These results suggest that bottom currents are responsible for maintaining gullies on canyon sidewalls and an axial channel on the canyon floor. Thin sections of sediment cores reveal that muddy sand in the canyon head consists of mud aggregates and silt and fine‐grained sand, both behaving similarly in terms of flow dynamics. Three facies are present at macro‐scale and micro‐scale: laminated, partially laminated and bioturbated sandy mud. Sedimentary structures include rhythmic sand and mud aggregate couplets, planar to wavy laminations, current ripple cross‐laminations and fining‐upward successions, which are attributed to bottom currents induced by internal tides. Bioturbated facies, characterized by discrete biogenic structures and cross‐cutting relationships, predominate and overprint a mottled background. A mottled bioturbation fabric also alternates with or locally disrupts layering within the partially laminated facies. Internal tide currents, capable of bedload transport and forming ripples, were measured during a monitoring period in the canyon head, followed by rapid re‐establishment of benthos and associated biogenic structures, supporting the core interpretations. Preservation of sedimentary facies associated with these internal tides occurs when the sedimentation rate outpaces the rate of bioturbation, likely during stormier conditions on the shelf. These results represent observations of sedimentary facies associated with modern bottom currents and internal tides, and can be used to interpret similar occurrences within the rock record. The 2022 mpox outbreak predominantly impacted gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). Two models were developed to support situational awareness and management decisions in Canada. A compartmental model characterized epidemic drivers at national/provincial levels, while an agent‐based model (ABM) assessed municipal‐level impacts of vaccination. The models were parameterized and calibrated using empirical case and vaccination data between 2022 and 2023. The compartmental model explored: (1) the epidemic trajectory through community transmission, (2) the potential for transmission among non‐gbMSM, and (3) impacts of vaccination and the proportion of gbMSM contributing to disease transmission. The ABM incorporated sexual‐contact data and modeled: (1) effects of vaccine uptake on disease dynamics, and (2) impacts of case importation on outbreak resurgence. The calibrated, compartmental model followed the trajectory of the epidemic, which peaked in July 2022, and died out in December 2022. Most cases occurred among gbMSM, and epidemic trajectories were not consistent with sustained transmission among non‐gbMSM. The ABM suggested that unprioritized vaccination strategies could increase the outbreak size by 47%, and that consistent importation (≥5 cases per 10 000) is necessary for outbreak resurgence. Waves and tidal currents can interact to produce strong seabed shear stress and mobilization of sediments on continental shelves. Modelled wave and tidal current data for a 3-year period were used in a combined-flow sediment transport model to simulate the seabed shear stresses and the mobilization of uniform medium sand on the continental shelves of Canada. The modelling results are presented to establish the first national framework of seabed disturbance and sediment mobility on the continental shelves of Canada. Strong waves and tidal currents on the Canadian continental shelves produce mean bed shear velocity >5 cm·s−1. Medium sand can be mobilized >50% of the time over many areas on the shelves. The mobilization by tidal currents occurs over 36% and by waves over 50% of the shelf area, demonstrating that mobilization of sediments is dominated by waves on the Canadian continental shelves. Combined shear stresses due to wave and tidal current interaction further increase sediment mobilization to over 68% of the shelf area. The spatial variation of the relative importance of wave and tidal disturbances allows classification of the continental shelves into six disturbance types. Innovative Seabed Disturbance (SDI) and Sediment Mobility (SMI) indices are proposed to quantify the seabed exposure to oceanographic processes and sediment mobilization, incorporating both the magnitude and frequency of these processes. The proposed SDI and SMI, together with the disturbance type classification, can be used as standard parameters to best quantify seabed disturbance and sediment mobility on other shelves of the world. Sixty-three percent of the total active tuberculosis cases in Canada were diagnosed among foreign-born individuals, representing 20% of the total population. The majority of these cases occur from the reactivation of tuberculosis infections acquired prior to immigration. A preventive policy consisting of screening and treating new immigrants for latent tuberculosis infection is evaluated on its efficacy for reducing the total number of tuberculosis cases, using tuberculosis incidence data between 1986 and 1995 from the Canadian tuberculosis reporting system. The most effective intervention is to screen for and treat latent tuberculosis infection among arriving immigrants from countries of birth with a tuberculosis incidence rate greater than 15 cases per 100,000. Abstract: Strong currents have eroded thick Quaternary sediments to create a scour trough at Minas Passage, in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, site of Earth''s largest tides. We describe this trough in the context of a larger system that comprises a range of elements, viz: 1) Scour troughs extending 170m below mean sea level are incised into thick glaciomarine sediments and have exhumed bedrock over wide areas. The flanking uneroded terrain has low relief and a winnowed surface. 2) Sets of sand banner banks off Cape D''Or and Cape Chignecto. 3) The atypical set of banner banks at Cape Split, consisting of the Scots Bay dune field and its counterpart, a large gravel bank trapped in the Minas Passage scour trough. 4) Low-relief banks with sand ribbons and barchan dunes alongside some banner banks, and termed ‘shadow banks’. 5) A large (0.8km3) sediment drift at the entrance to Minas Channel (without large bedforms). The location of troughs and banks can be correlated with tidal-current patterns: trenches are located in regions of very strong bi-directional currents; banner banks near headland-sited tidal gyres; shadow banks in areas of maximum mean bottom stress asymmetry; and the sediment drift at the entrance to Minas Channel in an area of weak bottom stress at all stages of the tides. Previous work has argued that the scour system formed after 3400 14Cyrs BP (radiocarbon years before present) following collapse of a barrier system across Minas Passage. We speculate that formation of the scour trough system may have released vast quantities of sediment that have not been accounted for in previous sediment budgets, and that much of this released sediment has been sequestered in the late-Holocene salt marshes at the head of the Bay of Fundy. The COVID-19 pandemic has stimulated wastewater-based surveillance, allowing public health to track the epidemic by monitoring the concentration of the genetic fingerprints of SARS-CoV-2 shed in wastewater by infected individuals. Wastewater-based surveillance for COVID-19 is still in its infancy. In particular, the quantitative link between clinical cases observed through traditional surveillance and the signals from viral concentrations in wastewater is still developing and hampers interpretation of the data and actionable public-health decisions. We present a modelling framework that includes both SARS-CoV-2 transmission at the population level and the fate of SARS-CoV-2 RNA particles in the sewage system after faecal shedding by infected persons in the population. Using our mechanistic representation of the combined clinical/wastewater system, we perform exploratory simulations to quantify the effect of surveillance effectiveness, public-health interventions and vaccination on the discordance between clinical and wastewater signals. We also apply our model to surveillance data from three Canadian cities to provide wastewater-informed estimates for the actual prevalence, the effective reproduction number and incidence forecasts. We find that wastewater-based surveillance, paired with this model, can complement clinical surveillance by supporting the estimation of key epidemiological metrics and hence better triangulate the state of an epidemic using this alternative data source., (Crown Copyright © 2022.
