Abstract

This proceedings of a conference held in May 2000 at Malaspina University-College (British Columbia) contains approximately 63 conference papers, abstracts of papers, and keynote speeches. The conference examined issues affecting rural communities, with major themes being rural education, health, human services, families, and the sustainability of rural communities. The conference aimed to foster an international network of rural scholars, which had its beginnings at a 1994 conference of the same name, held at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. Topics of speeches and papers include history of U.S. rural women teachers, rural school reform, public policies affecting rural communities, adjustment of professionals relocating to rural areas, community health services and initiatives, rural community information services, rural studies programs, Aboriginal education in Canada and Australia, information technology use on farms and in rural schools and communities, rural health issues, community viability, rural economy, community development issues and programs, connections between rural schools and communities, and distance education. Abstract

This manual provides an overview of the concepts and issues involved in the assessment of prior learning in the context of the increasing numbers of older, nontraditional students returning to higher education. Section 1 gives background information about prior learning assessment (PLA) and defines PLA as assessment by some valid and reliable means, by a qualified specialist, of what has been learned through non-formal education/training or experience, that is worthy of credit in a course or program offered by the institution providing the credit. Section 2 describes the standards and guidelines for quality assurance of PLA. Various methods of prior learning assessment are featured in Section 3. In Section 4, the focus is on one of the most common methods of PLA--portfolio assessment. It introduces a discussion of academic and administrative issues and includes a discussion of special issues that pertain to the assessment of portfolios. Section 5 is intended for individuals or institutions who already use prior learning assessment or who will be implementing a PLA process. Section 6 lists the recommended participants in the PLA process. Appendixes list characteristics of adult learners and a sample prior learning assessment policy at one British Columbia institution. Abstract

This handbook addresses the needs of postsecondary instructors who work with students with learning disabilities. The information in the handbook is gathered from sources throughout Canada and the United States. It is intended to lead instructors toward a greater understanding of the educational needs of students with learning disabilities. The handbook is divided into three sections, followed by a bibliography. Section 1 helps the instructor better understand students with learning disabilities and introduces some of the problems faced by adults with learning disabilites. These problems are illustrated by four case histories. Section 2 provides support suggestions and takes the instructor through the steps of identifying problems and helping students who have learning disabilities cope with postsecondary classes and instructors, and is followed by a five-page bibliography of resources grouped by subject.
