The development of cost-efficient pathways is a topic of increasing political and scholarly interest across many North American jurisdictions. It has been suggested that 'seamless' transfer pathways can provide financial savings to both students and taxpayers. However, such claims are typically based on hypothetical cost calculations, as opposed to empirical analysis. Through this study, we model the relationship between student pathways and borrowing behavior in Ontario, Canada -- the country's most populous province -- using Statistics Canada's novel Education and Labour Market Linkage Platform (ELMLP). Our models produce little evidence that touted transfer pathways systematically reduce either (i) students' propensity to borrow from the Canada Student Loans Program (CSLP), or (ii) the total amount that graduates end up borrowing from the program. We identify the implications of these findings for both policymakers and scholars of social stratification.

The reporting of students' Learning Skills on the Ontario provincial report card provides educators and families with insight into students' work habits. However, the evaluation process is highly subjective. This study explores teachers' perceptions around student learning across demographic and institutional factors. This exploratory study is the first of its kind in Canada and draws data from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), the nation's largest public board of education, serving approximately 246,000 students (2017-2018 data). Holding achievement as an independent variable, results indicate widespread differences in teachers' perceptions across student demographic identities and reveals significant implications on postsecondary access.

Objectives: Off-road vehicle (ORV) and motorcycle use is common in Canada; however, risk of serious injury is heightened when these vehicles are operated without helmets and under the influence of alcohol. This study evaluated the impact of alcohol intoxication on helmet non-use and mortality among ORV and motorcycle crashes. Methods: Using data collected from the Nova Scotia Trauma Registry, a retrospective analysis (2002–2017) of ORV and motorcycle crashes resulting in major traumatic brain injury was performed. Patients were grouped by blood alcohol concentration (BAC) as negative (< 2 mmol/L), legally intoxicated (2-17.3 mmol/L) or criminally intoxicated (> 17.3 mmol/L). Logistic regression models were constructed to test for helmet non-use and mortality. Results: A total of 424 trauma patients were included in the analysis (220 ORV, 204 motorcycle). Less than half (45%) of patients involved in ORV crashes were wearing helmets and 65% were criminally intoxicated. Most patients involved in motorcycle crashes were helmeted at time of injury (88.7%) and 18% were criminally intoxicated. Those with criminal levels of intoxication had 3.7 times the odds of being unhelmeted and were 3 times more likely to die prehospital compared to BAC negative patients. There were significantly increased odds of in-hospital mortality among those with both legal (OR = 5.63), and criminal intoxication levels (OR = 4.97) compared to patients who were BAC negative. Conclusion: Alcohol intoxication is more frequently observed in ORV versus motorcycle crashes. Criminal intoxication is associated with helmet non-use. Objective: There has been interest in a possible negative association between HIV and multiple sclerosis (MS). We aimed to compare the risk of MS in a cohort of individuals living with HIV to that in the general population. Methods: Population‐based health data were accessed for 2 cohorts of HIV‐positive persons from Sweden and British Columbia, Canada. Incident MS was identified using MS registries or a validated algorithm applied to administrative data. Individuals with HIV were followed from 1 year after the first clinical evidence of HIV or the first date of complete administrative health data (Canada = April 1, 1992 and Sweden = January 1, 2001) until the earliest of incident MS, emigration, death, or study end (Canada = March 31, 2020 and Sweden = December 31, 2018). The observed MS incidence rate in the HIV‐positive cohort was compared to the expected age‐, sex‐, calendar year‐, income‐specific, and region of birth‐specific rates in a randomly selected sample of >20% of each general population. The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) for MS following the first antiretroviral therapy exposure ("ART‐exposed") was also calculated. Results: The combined Sweden‐Canada cohort included 29,163 (75% men) HIV‐positive persons. During 242,248 person‐years of follow‐up, 14 incident MS cases were observed in the HIV‐positive cohort, whereas 26.19 cases were expected. The SIR for MS in the HIV‐positive population was 0.53 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.32–0.90). The SIR for MS following the first ART exposure was 0.55 (95% CI = 0.31–0.96). Interpretation: This international population‐based study demonstrated a lower risk of MS among HIV‐positive individuals, and HIV‐positive ART‐exposed individuals. Three Orosirian basins and associated foreland thrust-fold belts are preserved on the margins of the Slave craton. All three are related to orogenic belts where oceans opened and later closed, uniting new crustal partners. The Great Slave basin differs from the Kilhigok and Coronation basins in ways that have defied explanation. It lacks a passive margin sequence and hosts two discrete igneous suites, separated by large-scale thrusting, that occurred well after the adjacent paleocean had closed. Here we report U–Pb zircon geochronology by chemical abrasion isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry for a member of each suite to constrain the age and origin of postcollisional thrusting. A widespread pulse of mainly phreatic alkaline volcanism, coeval with renewed foredeep flexure, occurred at 1889.0 ± 0.7 Ma (2σ internal error). A quartz-monzodiorite body, one of a belt-parallel chain of laccoliths that postdate thrusting, was emplaced at 1866.9 ± 0.9 Ma. These ages bracket renewed foredeep sedimentation and thrusting that telescoped major facies zones and was rooted within the basin. The older age is 70 and 30−60 Myr younger than collision in the Thelon and Taltson orogens, respectively. We attribute postcollisional thrusting and foredeep subsidence to "eduction"—the upward and outward ejection of partly subducted crust—and postulate that the top of the ejected wedge was a normal-sense detachment fault projecting beneath the Nonacho basin. We infer that eduction was triggered by slab failure, producing alkaline volcanism, and ended with delamination and laccolith emplacement. Eduction was facilitated by tradewind-driven erosion. Delamination was enabled by crustal transfer to the educted wedge, reducing footwall buoyancy. Slab failure and/or delamination removed the passive margin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of an online survey administered to chairs of American departments of geography to ascertain current trends and perceived value of international faculty-led field courses within their departments. The majority of reporting chairs indicated increased field course offerings over the past decade most often resulting from increased faculty interest in teaching these courses. Chairs attached a high value to such courses in enhancing students' academic and personal growth. Despite the value placed on these courses, few departments require them for a geography degree or have an instrument to assess course learning outcomes. (Contains 1 figure and 2 tables.)

Background: There is evidence that the primary care provided for persons with an intellectual disability living in the community has been inadequate. Hospitalization rates for ambulatory care sensitive (ACS) conditions are considered an indicator for access to, and quality of, primary care. The objective of this research was to identify ACS conditions that are applicable to persons with an intellectual disability. Materials and Methods: We developed and distributed a survey questionnaire using a modified Delphi process. The participants were clinicians with experience working with people with an intellectual disability. Results: All eleven conditions that were considered ACS for the general population met the three primary inclusion criteria. Study participants suggested five other conditions of which four met the primary criteria: constipation, gastroesophageal reflux, epilepsy, and schizophrenic disorders. Conclusions: There is a very high degree of agreement as to what constitutes an ACS condition for persons with an intellectual disability. The final list has the potential to be used with other populations with cognitive disabilities and outside of Canada.

This study reports a randomized controlled trial evaluation of a computer-based balanced literacy intervention, ABRACADABRA (http://grover.concordia.ca/abra/version1/abracadabra.html). Children (N = 144) in Grade 1 were exposed either to computer activities for word analysis, text comprehension, and fluency, alongside shared stories (experimental groups), or to balanced literacy approaches delivered by their classroom teachers (control group). Two computer-based interventions--a phoneme-based synthetic phonics method and a rime-based analytic phonics method--were contrasted. Children were taught 4 times per week for 12 weeks in small groups. There were significant improvements in letter knowledge in the analytic phonics program and significant improvements in phonological awareness, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension at immediate posttest and in phonological awareness and reading fluency at a delayed posttest in the synthetic phonics program. Effect size analyses confirmed that both interventions had a significant impact on literacy at both posttests. (Contains 2 tables.)

This study investigated whether students with learning difficulties (LDs) attending inclusive schools that eschewed segregated "pull out" programs reported more incidents of being bullied than their peers without LDs. Cognitive and self-perception factors associated with reports of peer victimization were also explored. Participants were 13 Grade 5 students with LDs and 14 classmates without LDs, matched on gender. Results showed that students with LDs self-reported significantly more incidents of being bullied than students without LDs. After statistical controls for group differences in receptive vocabulary, differences in bullying were no longer significant. Results suggest first that children with LDs in inclusive schools that eschew pull-out programs may still experience significant bullying. Second, the link between LDs, peer rejection, and victimization may reflect the social impact of language difficulties. Implications for reducing peer victimization in inclusive settings are discussed. (Contains 3 tables.)

Background: It has been suggested that persons with an intellectual disability consume a disproportionate amount of hospital services. Policy changes in Ontario in the 1970s and 1980s made it necessary for community health services to accommodate this population that formerly received most of its medical care in the institutions where they lived. It is frequently suggested that community health services are currently inadequate to care for this population. Methods: The study was a retrospective analysis of routinely collected hospitalization data for persons living in Ontario with an intellectual disability, between 1995 and 2001. Results: A substantial proportion of hospitalizations of persons with an intellectual disability were for mental disorders and dental diseases. Of all in-hospital stays, one-third were for mental disorders such as schizophrenia and depression. Of all day-surgery admissions, almost 40% were for dental diseases corresponding to a high rate of dental procedures. The study also identified high ambulatory care-sensitive condition hospitalization rates. In-hospital surgical procedure rates, however, were low. Interpretation: This study is the first to fully describe patterns of hospitalization for persons with an intellectual disability in Ontario, Canada. A recurring finding is the large discrepancy between statistics for persons with an intellectual disability and published data for the general population. The study limitations mean further research is required to confirm the results and to determine if persons with an intellectual disability are receiving the health care they are entitled to in Ontario.

The September-to-June school calendar has been a fixture of North America for almost a century. Its origins have usually been told as an unexamined tale attributed to features of nineteenth century rural society. We challenge this interpretation by suggesting that multiple pressures arising from increasing urbanization influenced its roots. We present information on the importance of the summer holiday in the development of compulsory schooling in several North American jurisdictions, with the main evidence from Ontario, the most populous province in Canada. We suggest, along with Gold (2002), that this development had wider applicability in several Northeastern and Midwestern American states. Beyond the issue of having an accurate story line, we examine why there has been such resistance in recent times to changing the school year. The school calendar may be another example of an enduring institutional form referred to by Tyack and Tobin as a "grammar of schooling" that resisted fundamental change in the twentieth century. Viewing the school calendar's ties with changes over time in the construction of other clocks of society may enable us to rethink the format of the contemporary school calendar. Finally, we consider the school calendar as part of a larger, ongoing discussion of what constitutes effectiveness of schools.

Little is known about how the co-occurrence of psychosocial factors affect sub-populations of people living with HIV (PLWH). We used cross-sectional data from 999 PLWH, aged ≥19, accessing antiretroviral therapy (ART) in British Columbia, Canada (2007–2010) to examine associations between psychosocial factors and ART-related outcomes separately for trans/cis inclusive women; heterosexual men; and gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). Multivariable logistic regression examined associations between psychosocial factors (0–3): any violence in the past 6 months, depressive symptoms in the past week, and current street drug use (heroin, crack, meth or speedball) with sub-optimal adherence (outcome 1: average annual ART adherence <95% from interview until end of follow-up, death, or December 31st, 2018) and ever viral rebound (outcome 2) adjusting for potential confounders. Of 999 PLWH (264 women, 382 heterosexual men, and 353 gbMSM), women and heterosexual men had significantly higher median counts than gbMSM. Overall, higher counts were associated with sub-optimal adherence (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.26/1-unit increase, 95%CI = 1.07–1.49). All effect estimates were of a greater magnitude among gbMSM, but not significant for women or heterosexual men, highlighting the need for population (e.g., gender and sexual orientation)-centered care and research. HIV treatment interruptions are a major public health concern that demonstrate a lack of engagement in care and is detrimental to the health of people living with HIV. Community connectedness have demonstrated a protective effect for psychosocial health but are not well understood for HIV treatment outcomes. We explored associations between community connectedness and treatment interruptions among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) living with HIV in Vancouver, British Columbia. We analyzed survey data from the Momentum Health Study and identified treatment interruptions through data linkages with the provincial HIV Drug Treatment Program as episodes lasting more than 60 days beyond an expected antiretroviral therapy refill date from February 2012 to July 2019. We built a mixed-effects logistic regression model, adjusting for confounders. Of 213 gbMSM living with HIV, 54 experienced treatment interruption (25.4%) over a median five-year follow-up. Multivariable results found the number gbMSM who spoken to in the past month (aOR = 0.995; 95% CI = 0.991, 1.000 (per 100-unit increase)) and attending a gay community meeting more than once per month (aOR = 0.32; 95% CI = 0.11, 0.89) were associated with lower odds of treatment interruptions. Wireworms are primary pests of potatoes in Canada. Presently, the highly toxic organophosphate phorate (i.e., Thimet 20G) is the only effective insecticide in use in Canada. As such, there is an urgent need for novel alternative treatments that provide competitive tuber blemish protection and wireworm reduction with a safer human and environmental portfolio. Herein we evaluated broflanilide, a novel meta-diamide insecticide for both tuber protection and wireworm mortality. When evaluated in field trials in Agassiz, British Columbia over 6 yr, broflanilide applied as a seed piece treatment (SPT) to mother tubers at 1.5–2.0 g AI/100 kg seed (approx. 50 g AI/ha), or as an in-furrow spray (IFS) at 0.23–0.25 g AI/100 m row (approx. 25 g AI/ha) was as effective at reducing blemishes to daughter tubers by wireworms (Agriotes obscurus) as phorate (Thimet 20G at 3230 g AI/ha), bifenthrin (Capture 2EC IFS at 300 g AI/ha) and clothianidin (Titan ST at 312.5 g AI/ha). In addition, broflanilide SPT and IFS applied at the above rates reduced resident wireworms (in the field at the time of planting) by 95.4–99.0% and neonate wireworms (produced from eggs laid during the growing season) by 98.1–100%. Similar results were obtained when broflanilide IFS (nonsystemic) was paired with clothianidin SPT (systemic) for broad-spectrum potato insect pest control. Strategies for the use of broflanilide on wheat (e.g., Teraxxa F4) in rotation with potatoes (Cimegra), both registered in Canada in 2020 are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Billing and insurance--related costs are a significant source of wasteful health care spending in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development nations, but these administrative burdens vary across national systems. We executed a microlevel accounting of these costs in different national settings at six provider locations in five nations (Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and Singapore) that supplements our prior study measuring the costs in the US. We found that billing and insurance--related costs for inpatient bills range from a low of $6 in Canada to a high of $215 in the US for an inpatient surgical bill (purchasing power parity adjusted). We created a taxonomy of billing and insurance--related activities (eligibility, coding, submission, and rework) that was applied to data from the six sites and allows cross-national comparisons. Higher costs in the US and Australia are attributed to high coding costs. Much of the savings achieved in some nations is attributable to assigning tasks to people in lower-skill job categories, although most of the savings are due to more efficient billing and insurance--related processes. Some nations also reduce these costs by offering financial counseling to patients before treatment. Our microlevel approach can identify specific cost drivers and reveal national billing features that reduce coding costs. We assessed the relationship between tobacco smoking and immunologic and virologic response among people living with HIV (PLWH) initiating combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in the Canadian HIV Observational Cohort (CANOC). Positive immunologic and virologic response, respectively, were defined as ≥50 cells/mm3 CD4 count increase (CD4+) and viral suppression ≤50 copies/mL (VL+) within 6 months of cART initiation. Using multinomial regression, we examined the relationship between smoking, immunologic, and virologic response category. Model A adjusted for birth sex, baseline age, enrolling province, and era of cohort entry; models B and C further adjusted for neighbourhood level material deprivation and history of injection drug use (IDU), respectively. Among 4267 individuals (32.7%) with smoking status data, concordant positive (CD4+/VL+) response was achieved by 64.2% never, 66.9% former, and 59.4% current smokers. In the unadjusted analysis, current smoking was significantly associated with concordant negative response (odds ratio [OR] 1.85, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40–2.45). Similarly, models A and B showed an increased odds of concordant negative response in current smokers (adjusted OR [aOR] 1.78, 95% CI 1.32–2.39 and 1.74, 95% CI 1.29–2.34, respectively). Respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome can occur in burn patients with or without inhalational injury and can significantly increase mortality. For patients with severe respiratory failure who fail conventional therapy with mechanical ventilation, the use of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) may be a life-saving salvage therapy. There have been a series of case reports detailing the use of ECMO in burn patients over the last 20 years, but very little is currently known about the status of ECMO use at burn centers in North America. Using a web-based survey of burn center directors in Canada and the United States, we examined the rate of usage of ECMO in burn care, barriers to its use, and the perioperative management of burn patients receiving ECMO therapy. Our findings indicate that approximately half of the burn centers have used ECMO in the care of burn patients, but patient volume is very low on average (less than 1 per year). Of centers that do use ECMO in burn care, only 40% have a specified protocol for doing so. Approximately half have operated on patients being actively treated with ECMO therapy, but perioperative management of anticoagulation varies widely. A lack of experience and institutional support and a perceived lack of evidence to support ECMO use in burn patients were the most commonly identified barriers to more widespread uptake. Better collaboration between burn centers will allow for the creation of consensus statements and protocols to improve outcomes for burn patients who require ECMO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: We described the impact of different lengths of lookback window (LW), a retrospective time period to observe diagnoses in administrative data, on the prevalence and incidence of eight chronic diseases.Methods: Our study populations included people living with HIV (N = 5151) and 1:5 age-sex-matched HIV-negative individuals (N = 25,755) in British Columbia, Canada, with complete follow-up between 1996 and 2012. We measured period prevalence and incidence of diseases in 2012 using LWs ranging from 1 to 16 years. Cases were deemed prevalent if identified in 2012 or within a defined LW, and incident if newly identified in 2012 with no previous cases detected within a defined LW. Chronic disease cases were ascertained using published case-finding algorithms applied to population-based provincial administrative health datasets.Results: Overall, using cases identified by the full 16-year LW as the reference, LWs ≥8 years and ≥ 4 years reduced the proportion of misclassified prevalent and incidence cases of most diseases to < 20%, respectively. The impact of LWs varied across diseases and populations.Conclusions: This study underscored the importance of carefully choosing LWs and demonstrated data-driven approaches that may inform these choices. We examined temporal trends and factors associated with reporting partner's serostatus and viral load among a sample of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) in Vancouver, Canada. Participants were recruited using respondent-driven sampling and we collected prospective cohort data from 09/2014 to 02/2017 using a computer-assisted questionnaire and nurse-administered STI/HIV testing. Our study included 481 participants reporting on 3780 sexual events. Among HIV-negative/unknown gbMSM we found a trend towards decreased proportions of sexual events reporting an unknown HIV-status partner (42–19%; p = < 0.001) and found increased proportions among gbMSM living with HIV (11–27%; p = 0.043). More participants living with HIV reported sex with undetectable partners, compared to HIV-negative/unknown participants (14.8% versus 5%). Our multivariable model found that compared with unknown status partners, undetectable partners were older, were from longer sexual relationships and were more likely to engage in condomless anal sex. Findings indicate that HIV-negative gbMSM seem more aware of the serostatus of their partners over time, but knowledge of partners' viral load over time was not significant. Further research should assess the degree to which new campaigns such as Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) are associated with discussions about HIV disclosure and viral load status. Introduction: Universal provision of effective antiretroviral medication has been essential to reduce mortality, increase longevity, and reduce onward transmission of HIV. This study aims to illuminate persistent threats to the health and longevity of under-served PLWH in British Columbia (BC), Canada.Methods: Between 2007 and 2010, 1000 PLWH across BC were enrolled in the Longitudinal Investigation into Supportive and Ancillary health services (LISA) study and completed a cross-sectional survey on their HIV-care experiences and healthcare engagement. The sample generally reflects an under-served population of PLWH. A linkage to the provincial Vital Statistics registry is used in this analysis in order to examine overall mortality and cause-specific mortality trends; probability of death was modeled using logistic regression for participants with ongoing clinical monitoring (n = 910).Results: By June 2017, 208 (20.8%) participants had died. The majority of deaths 57 (27.4%) were attributed to drug-related complications or overdoses, 39 (18.8%) were attributed to HIV-related complications, and 36 (17.3%) to non-AIDS-defining malignancies. We observed elevated odds of death among PLWH who smoked tobacco (aOR: 2.11, 95% CI: 1.38, 3.23), were older (aOR: 1.06 per one-year increase, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.08), indicated heavy alcohol consumption (aOR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.11, 2.22), and reported unstable housing (aOR: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.37, 2.80); while higher CD4 cell count was protective (aOR: 0.87 per 100-unit increase, 95% CI: 0.79, 0.94) as was male gender), though non-significant (aOR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.49, 1.07).Conclusions: Overdose is - the leading cause of mortality among a cohort of under-served PLWH in BC, Canada. Public health efforts to end the HIV epidemic and support the health and well-being of PLWH are being thwarted by persistent health inequities and the enormous and persistent risks facing people who use drugs. Integrated low-barrier primary care is essential for supporting under-served PLWH, and safe drug supply is needed to support PLWH who use drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In North America, monitoring for Agriotes spp. click beetles typically has been done using Vernon beetle traps baited with bubble cap sex pheromone lures. This trap and lure are no longer produced commercially and a new trap, the Vernon pitfall trap, and lure design are used now for both invasive Agriotes and native pest species. Herein we compare the 2 trapping methods for Agriotes sputator (L.) (Coleoptera: Elateridae), and provide a calibration factor between them to allow comparison of survey results using the different methods. When deployed for the entire swarming season, Vernon pitfall traps fitted with the new capsule lures collect 0.7× as many A. sputator as Vernon beetle traps fitted with the bubble cap lures, and Vernon beetle traps fitted with capsule lures collect 0.5× as many beetles as Vernon beetle traps fitted with bubble cap lures. Unlike bubble cap lures, however, capsule-style lures need to be primed (maintained at room temperature for 3 wk) before deployment in the field, or else their initial attractiveness will be limited and trap catches will not be representative of populations present at the time. In addition, results from field studies indicate that these capsule lures deplete over the swarming season, and depending on the trapping objective (e.g., mass trapping) may need to be replaced after 5 to 6 wk of deployment. Increasing the lure load to 2× or 4× the regular 40 µL geranyl butanoate, or the capsule container size from 1.0 to 2.5 mL, did not significantly increase the number of A. sputator collected. Objectives: To determine the time to CD4 : CD8 ratio normalization among Canadian adults living with HIV in the modern ART era. To identify characteristics associated with ratio normalization.Patients and Methods: Retrospective analysis of the Canadian Observational Cohort (CANOC), an interprovincial cohort of ART-naive adults living with HIV, recruited from 11 treatment centres across Canada. We studied participants initiating ART between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2016 with baseline CD4 : CD8 ratio <1.0 and ≥2 follow-up measurements. Normalization was defined as two consecutive CD4 : CD8 ratios ≥1.0. Kaplan-Meier estimates and log-rank tests described time to normalization. Univariable and multivariable proportional hazards (PH) models identified factors associated with ratio normalization.Results: Among 3218 participants, 909 (28%) normalized during a median 2.6 years of follow-up. Participants with higher baseline CD4+ T-cell count were more likely to achieve normalization; the probability of normalization by 5 years was 0.68 (95% CI 0.62-0.74) for those with baseline CD4+ T-cell count >500 cells/mm3 compared with 0.16 (95% CI 0.11-0.21) for those with ≤200 cells/mm3 (P < 0.0001). In a multivariable PH model, baseline CD4+ T-cell count was associated with a higher likelihood of achieving ratio normalization (adjusted HR = 1.5, 95% CI 1.5-1.6 per 100 cells/mm3, P < 0.0001). After adjusting for baseline characteristics, time-dependent ART class was not associated with ratio normalization.Conclusions: Early ART initiation, at higher baseline CD4+ T-cell counts, has the greatest impact on CD4 : CD8 ratio normalization. Following the deregistration of lindane, several neonicotinoid insecticides have been registered as seed treatments for controlling wireworms in cereal crops. Unlike lindane, which did both, neonicotinoids provide crop protection but do not reduce wireworm populations. Hence populations of various economic species are growing in key wheat production areas of the United States and Canada, and there is a need for novel seed treatments that match the efficacy of lindane. Herein we evaluated broflanilide, a novel GABA-gated Cl- channel allosteric modulator that differs from the cyclodienes (e.g. lindane) in that it binds to a unique site in the GABA receptor. As such, broflanilide confers a new mode of insecticidal action (Group 30 MOA), and is the first meta-diamide insecticide developed. When evaluated in field trials over 7 yr at various rates, broflanilide at 5.0 g [AI]/100 kg wheat seed was as effective at protecting wheat stand from wireworm (Agriotes obscurus) injury as the current industry standard thiamethoxam at 20–30 g [AI]/100 kg seed. In addition, broflanilide at 5.0 g reduced neonate wireworms (produced from eggs laid in established wheat during the growing season) and resident wireworms (in the field at time of planting) by 73.1 and 81.1%, respectively, which is comparable to that reported for the previous industry standard lindane (75.3 and 57.6%, respectively). These studies show that broflanilide at 5.0 g [AI] will provide consistent wheat stand protection (equal to thiamethoxam at 20–30 g [AI]), and A. obscurus wireworm population reduction (equal to lindane at 59 g [AI]), and will do so at far lower dosages per hectare. Social isolation, a risk factor for poor health within the general population, may be exacerbated by unique challenges faced by people living with HIV (PLHIV). This analysis examines the association between social isolation and all-cause mortality among a cohort of PLHIV experiencing multiple social vulnerabilities. The analytical sample included 936 PLHIV ≥ 19 years, living in British Columbia, Canada, and enrolled in the Longitudinal Investigation into Supportive and Ancillary Health Services (LISA) Study (2007–2010). Participants were classified as Socially Connected (SC), Minimally Isolated (MI) or Socially Isolated (SI) via latent class analysis. Cross-sectional survey data was linked to longitudinal clinical data from a provincial HIV treatment database. Mortality was assessed longitudinally up to and including December 31st, 2017. Through multivariable logistic regression, an association between SI and all-cause mortality was found (adjusted OR: 1.48; 95% CI 1.08, 2.01). Risk compensation in an HIV Treatment as Prevention (TasP) environment may increase high-risk sexual and substance use behaviors among people living with HIV. Objective: To examine recent crystal methamphetamine (CM) use/initiation in a longitudinal cohort of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) living with HIV in Metro Vancouver, Canada. Methods: Eligible participants were GBMSM aged >15 years who reported sex with another man in the past six months. Participants were recruited using respondent-driven sampling and self-completed a computer questionnaire every six months. We used multi-level generalized mixed-effect models to evaluate trends in recent CM use (past six months), multivariable logistic regression to identify covariates of recent CM use, and multivariable survival analysis to identify predictors of CM initiation. Results: Of 207 GBMSM living with HIV at enrollment, 44.3% reported recent CM use; there was a statistically non-significant decrease over the study period (41% in first period to 25% in final period, p = 0.087). HIV treatment optimism was not associated with CM use/initiation. CM use was positively associated with depressive symptomology, sexual escape motivation, transactional sex, number of anal sex partners, condomless anal sex with seroconcordant partners, STIs, and other substance use. Recent CM use was negatively associated with viral load sorting. CM initiation was predicted by escape motivation, transactional sex, and group sex participation. Conclusion: Results suggest that CM use among GBMSM living with HIV is prevalent and increased CM use/initiation is not a consequence of TasP public policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Methamphetamine (MA) use among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) is a pervasive issue, associated with detrimental health outcomes. We identified factors associated with discontinuation or reduction in MA among a subset of gbMSM reporting frequent (at least weekly) use, with a specific focus on symptoms of anxiety and depression. Methods: We recruited sexually-active gbMSM aged ≥16 years in Vancouver, Canada into a prospective-cohort study using respondent-driven sampling. Participants completed study visits once every six months. We used generalized linear mixed models to identify factors associated with reductions in MA use following a visit where participants previously reported using MA at least weekly. Results: Of 584 cohort participants with at least one follow-up visit, 67 (11.5%) reported frequent MA use at baseline or in follow-up visits. Of these, 46 (68.7%) had at least one subsequent study visit where they transitioned to less frequent (monthly or less) or no MA use. In multivariable models, reduced MA use was less likely for those who spent >50% of social time with other gbMSM (aRR = 0.49, 95%CI:0.28–0.85), gave or received drugs in exchange for sex (aRR = 0.34, 95%CI:0.13–0.87), injected drugs (aRR = 0.35, 95%CI:0.18–0.68), or used gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) (aRR = 0.41, 95%CI:0.21–0.78). Symptoms of anxiety or depression were not associated with reductions in MA use. Conclusions: Social connection and drug-related factors surrounding MA use were associated with reductions, but anxiety and depressive symptomatology were not. Incorporating socialization and polysubstance-related components with MA reduction may help in developing efficacious interventions toward reducing MA use for gbMSM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We examined the contribution of binocular vision and experience to performance on a simulated helicopter flight task.Background: Although there is a long history of research on the role of binocular vision and stereopsis in aviation, there is no consensus on its operational relevance. This work addresses this using a naturalistic task in a virtual environment.Method: Four high-resolution stereoscopic terrain types were viewed monocularly and binocularly. In separate experiments, we evaluated performance of undergraduate students and military aircrew on a simulated low hover altitude judgment task. Observers were asked to judge the distance between a virtual helicopter skid and the ground plane.Results: Our results show that for both groups, altitude judgments are more accurate in the binocular viewing condition than in the monocular condition. However, in the monocular condition, aircrew were more accurate than undergraduate observers in estimating height of the skid above the ground.Conclusion: At simulated altitudes of 5 ft (1.5 m) or less, binocular vision provides a significant advantage for estimation of the depth separation between the landing skid and the ground, regardless of relevant operational experience. However, when binocular cues are unavailable aircrew outperform undergraduate observers, a result that likely reflects the impact of training on the ability to interpret monocular depth cues. Background: Previous research demonstrates that substance use preferences and social-sexual environments are highly interrelated for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). Objective: We conducted a qualitative study to explore the socio-cultural context of substance use among local gbMSM communities in Metro Vancouver, Canada. Methods: Twenty gbMSM were purposively sampled from the larger Momentum Health Study cohort, a sexual health study of gbMSM in Greater Vancouver. Participants were demographically diverse in terms of HIV serostatus, age, income, ethnicity, and area of residence within the city and neighboring suburbs. Community maps generated by participants during formative research served as prompts for semi-structured interviews which were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis identified three themes of common experience. Results: First, participants indicated that substance use is intrinsically social in Vancouver gbMSM communities and that it functions as both a means of social inclusion and exclusion. Second, a distinction was made between types of substances and the location and context of their use, with specific substances having particular uses and meanings. Third, analysis suggested that gbMSM change their substance use over the life course and that this is affected by shifting priorities as people age. Discussion: For Vancouver gbMSM communities, substance use serves several social-cultural functions and can simultaneously serve as both a potential facilitator and barrier for community connection. Future research and health programing should consider venue and context specific messaging and recognize the heterogeneity of substance use within the larger gbMSM population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hypena opulenta, a moth native to Ukraine, was released in 2013–2014 as a biocontrol agent for pale swallow-wort Vincetoxicum rossicum, an invasive vine, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Earlier HIV diagnosis allows for improved treatment outcomes and secondary prevention. It is recommended that all individuals know their HIV status and that those at higher risk test more frequently. Using a representative community sample of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), we aimed to: (1) determine the proportion of GBMSM who have tested in the past 2 years, (2) determine reasons for testing and never having tested, and (3) explore correlates of testing. Of 535 eligible participants, 80.0% reported having had an HIV test in the past 2 years, most commonly as part of a regular testing schedule. The most common reason for not testing was low perceived HIV risk. Bisexual and older GBMSM, as well as those who lived outside of Vancouver, were less likely to have tested in the past 2 years. Rapid point-of-care testing may help improve testing rates and was shown to effectively engage some hard-to-reach GBMSM (e.g., those who had not tested for other STIs) in this sample. Background Agreement between sexual behaviour recall measures among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in Vancouver, Canada was examined.Methods: Study participants were sexually active GBM aged ≥16 years recruited via respondent-driving sampling (RDS). Participants completed a computer-assisted self-interview survey, including individual-level period prevalence (last 6 months) and sexual event-level (last sex with each of the five most recent partners) measures. RDS-weighted kappa statistics assessed the agreement between these types of data across five different sexual risk outcomes, stratified by self-identified HIV status and other demographic factors (age, education, race/ethnicity).Results: Of 719 participants, 195 (RDS-weighted 23.4%) were HIV-positive. For HIV-negative GBM (n=524, RDS-weighted 76.6%), there were moderate agreements between period prevalence and event-level data for any anal intercourse (AI), any condomless AI and any fisting, but weak agreement for any discordant/unknown AI and any sex toy use. For HIV-positive GBM, there was moderate agreement for any AI, any condomless AI, any discordant/unknown AI and any fisting; there was weak agreement for any sex toy use. Agreement between measurement types was generally higher for GBM who were living with HIV, who were older and who completed secondary school; there was little difference in agreement levels by race/ethnicity.Conclusions: We observed moderate agreement between sexual behaviour recall through event-level and period prevalence questions.
