This article presents a participatory action inquiry into the process and outcomes of professional learning for culturally nourishing pedagogies in Inuit schools. Culturally nourishing pedagogies are approaches to schooling that centre local knowledge, language, culture, and knowledge holders. Engaging all school staff, administrators, curriculum developers, and school boards in adopting such approaches is key to decolonizing schools and practicing Indigenous sovereignty in education. A research team of Inuit educators and university-based researchers, in partnership with the Nunatsiavut Inuit Government and the school board documented and analyzed the development, delivery, immediate and short-term outcomes of professional learning workshops addressing Inuit culturally nourishing pedagogies. Results show that the teachers have many ideas for, and intuitively incorporate land, language, local knowledge holders, and local resources in their teaching inside and outside the school building. Consistent implementation of culturally nourishing pedagogies is hindered by capacity, time, school board policies, and resource gaps. Teacher-to-teacher knowledge exchange in the workshops demonstrated the importance of identity, relationship, and safe spaces in generating ideas for and practicing culturally nourishing pedagogies. Collaborative co-creation of knowledge reveals how professional learning workshops can contribute to teachers' effective practice and to sustainable change in Nunatsiavut area schools.

Evidence generally supports a positive association between growth mindset and academic outcomes, even if the experimental evidence for growth mindset interventions is somewhat more tenuous. From an applied perspective, the concept of growth mindsets has grown in popularity with a proliferation of materials readily available to teachers and school administrators. The purpose of this multi-method study was to explore elementary students' (ages 6-12) understanding of growth mindset messaging created by their school and teachers, and its association with students' emotions. The results showed that students were positively impacted by the growth mindset messaging, both in school and when facing challenges outside of school. Their emotions were largely positive, with the exception of frustration, which participants associated equally with a growth and a fixed mindset. Results are discussed in relation to mindset theory broadly as well as in regards to school-and teacher-initiated mindset messages.

The Miqqut project was a participatory action research project through which Inuit language and literacy learning was embedded in a traditional skills program. Community-based researchers tracked learners' progress through entrance, exit, and post-program interviews and questionnaires, as well as through participant observation. Results show that participants became more willing to communicate and improved in Inuktitut language and literacy. The program built strong identities and relational networks. Participants became anchored in lifelong learning as they gained confidence in contexts within which they would continue to practise and develop what they had learned.

Language planning research and practice have largely ignored, or considered problematic, the diversity within endangered languages. Such a stance, though, conflicts with speakers' attitudes and desires, which often place high value on specific dialects. As grassroots, bottom-up approaches move to the forefront, so do concerns about the maintenance of distinct dialects of endangered languages. Dialect preservation has emerged (implicitly or explicitly) as a concurrent, complementary goal. Based on descriptions of dialect death and maintenance in the literature, this paper suggests that "micro" approaches to language planning favour the preservation of dialectal diversity within the broader pursuit of promoting endangered languages. Salmon and herring support both land and ocean predators and are critical to ecosystem resilience. Their linkages across land and sea realms make them highly susceptible to human activities, which can have flow-on effects up the food web. We quantify and compare the potential cumulative effects of human-driven pressures on interdependent species in salmon- and herring-linked ecosystems of western Canada using a risk assessment methodology. Adding indirect risks resulted in 68% greater total risks for land species than for direct risk alone, versus 15% for marine species. Inclusion of climate change pressures resulted in the greatest change in risk for low trophic marine species and habitats (greater than 25% increase). Forestry-related pressures accounted for the highest risk to all species and projected management of these pressures resulted in a total reduction of risk across all ecosystem components that was more than 14% greater than management of fisheries pressures. Ignoring land food web linkages and pressures underestimated cumulative risk by more than 40% for salmon and herring. This simple framework can be used to evaluate potential risk of existing human uses and future change to inform immediate management of linked land-sea ecosystems and help species avoid the 'death by a thousand cuts'. Introduction: Rates of unintended pregnancy are higher in women living with HIV than in those without HIV. The World Health Organization and the Canadian HIV Pregnancy Planning Guidelines recommend preventing unintended pregnancies and offering contraception counselling to women living with HIV to reduce the rate of perinatal HIV transmission worldwide. No studies have assessed post‐partum (PP) contraception use in women living with HIV in Canada. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review including all women living with HIV followed by the Oak Tree Clinic who had a live birth between 1 January 2014 and 15 September 2019. The main objective was to quantify the proportion and types of contraception used by women living with HIV within 3 months PP and to evaluate whether contraception counselling is associated with contraception use. Results: Of the 110 participants included, 79% were using contraception within 3 months PP. The most common contraception methods used were an intrauterine device in 22% of participants followed by depot‐medroxyprogesterone acetate in 18% of participants. Of those intending to use contraception PP, 86% and 92% were using contraception within 3 and 12 months PP, respectively. Contraception counselling during pregnancy, and up to 3 months PP, was associated with contraception use within 3 months PP (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The majority of women were using contraception within 3 months PP. Having a contraception plan resulted in a high rate of contraception use. Women living with HIV should have a PP contraception plan prior to giving birth to establish the necessary steps for starting highly reliable forms of contraception. Background: While treatment guidelines for HIV in adults have evolved rapidly with the advent of new antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, those for the prevention of vertical HIV transmission in pregnancy have evolved more slowly due to safety and efficacy concerns. Here we describe Canadian prescribing patterns for ARV treatments during pregnancy and compare them to perinatal HIV prescribing guidelines of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), that are commonly used in Canada and include recommendations for newly commercialized therapies. Methods: The Canadian Perinatal HIV Surveillance Program (CPHSP) captures annual medical data on mothers living with HIV and their infants from 23 sites across Canada. Women from this cohort who received an ARV treatment during pregnancy and who gave birth between 2004 and 2020 were included in the study. ARV treatments were designated as 'preferred/alternative' as per HHS HIV perinatal guidelines, or 'other than preferred/alternative'. Results: We identified 3673 pregnancies from 2720 women. The proportion of women that conceived while on ARV treatment increased from 29% in 2003 to 90% in 2020. Other than preferred/alternative ARV treatments were received in 1112 (30%) of pregnancies and this was significantly associated with having initiated ARV treatment before conception. Conclusion: In Canada during the study period, a high number of women were prescribed an other than preferred/alternative ARV treatment during pregnancy. Background and Aims: Excessive time and money spent on gambling can result in harms, not only to people experiencing a gambling problem but also to their close family and friends ("concerned significant others"; CSOs). The current study aimed to explore whether, and to what extent, CSOs experience decrements to their wellbeing due to another person's gambling. Methods: We analysed data from The Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey (HILDA; N = 19,064) and the Canadian Quinte Longitudinal Study (QLS; N = 3,904). Participants either self-identified as CSOs (QLS) or were identified by living in a household with a person classified in the problem gambling category by the PGSI (HILDA). Subjective well-being was measured using the Personal Wellbeing Index and single-item questions on happiness and satisfaction with life. Results: CSOs reported lower subjective wellbeing than non-CSOs across both countries and on all three wellbeing measures. CSO status remained a significant predictor of lower wellbeing after controlling for demographic and socio-economic factors, and own-gambling problems. There were no significant differences across various relationships to the gambler, by gender, or between household and non-household CSOs. Discussion and Conclusions: Gambling-related harms experienced by CSOs was reliably associated with a decrease in wellbeing. This decrement to CSO's wellbeing was not as strong as that experienced by the person with the first-order gambling problem. Background: Despite its controversial nature, the use of recreational marijuana and cannabis-derived products continue to increase in popularity. Cannabis consumption is currently legal in certain American states as well as Canada, and it is also frequently used by Canadian youth. However, cannabis use during childhood and adolescence can contribute to significant harm. Materials andMethods: A review of current literature regarding the impacts of cannabis consumption among Canadian youth was conducted. Medline, Cochrane, Embase and PubMed databases were utilized to identify journal articles published within 10 years that highlighted the impacts of cannabis consumption in its different forms among the North American pediatric population. Results: Our review identified harms include structural and functional impairments in the developing brain, the development of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, impaired road safety while driving under the influence of cannabis, and the significant consequences of accidental ingestion of cannabis products by children. We also ascertained that cannabis cessation strategies that employed an affective model, which explores the root causes of adolescents turning to cannabis, are most effective in reducing substance use among adolescents. Conclusions: In light of the recent legalization of cannabis in Canada, the purpose of this article was to provide background on cannabis consumption and its legalization in Canada, the impacts of cannabis on Canadian youth, and evidence-based strategies to help mitigate them. Background: Caregivers contribute substantially to patients' management of and recovery fromcardiovascular disease (CVD). Yet, the distress that many caregivers experience in this role continues to be underresearched and their needs undersupported. Purpose: Situated within a patient engagement framework and adapted from experience-based co-design guidelines, the process of developing a comprehensive caregiver support resource with joint contributions from caregivers and healthcare providers representing multiple disciplines is described. A discussion of the challenges encountered during the development of the caregiver support resource and recommendations for future sites embarking on co-design work are noted. Conclusion: Developing feasible and relevant approaches, such as informational support instruments, to meet the needs of the growing population of CVD caregivers is essential. Clinical Implications: Although co-design processes are often complex, take more time and resources to implement, and involve multiple levels of an organization and community than traditional practices, these efforts may help to improve healthcare quality to stem the burden of CVD. Objective: To test whether a practice-level intervention to promote the systematic identification, treatment, and follow-up of smokers (the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation [OMSC]) would improve long-term abstinence rates among smoker-patients with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes receiving care from diabetes education programs in Ontario, Canada.Research Design and Methods: The Tobacco Intervention in Diabetes Education study was a matched-pair, cluster-randomized clinical trial. Within each pair, sites were randomly allocated to either an OMSC intervention (n = 7) or a wait-list control (WLC) condition (n = 7). Diabetes education programs in the OMSC group introduced standardized processes to identify smokers and routinely provided smoking cessation interventions and follow-up. Smokers in the OMSC group received counseling, a discount card to partially cover the cost of smoking cessation medication, and follow-up telephone calls over a 6-month period. Diabetes education programs in the WLC condition were offered the OMSC intervention after a 1-year waiting period. Smokers in the WLC group received usual care for smoking cessation from their diabetes educator. The primary end point was carbon monoxide (CO)-confirmed 7-day point prevalence abstinence from smoking at 6-month follow-up.Results: A total of 313 smokers (OMSC group n = 199, WLC group n = 114) with diabetes or prediabetes were enrolled. The CO-confirmed abstinence rate at 6 months was 11.1% in the OMSC group versus 2.6% in the WLC group (odds ratio 3.73 [95% CI 1.20, 11.58]; P = 0.02).Conclusions: Implementation of the OMSC in diabetes education programs resulted in clinically and statistically significant improvements in long-term abstinence among smokers with diabetes or prediabetes. The aim was to determine the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and health profile among urban versus rural continuing care aides (CCAs) in Canada. This cross-sectional study of 42 urban and rural CCAs assessed WMSDs and health profiles using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ), and a health background questionnaire. CCAs were generally unhealthy, with rural CCAs somewhat healthier. Greatest WMSD complaint was reported at the neck. Urban CCAs were more likely to report foot complaints (p < .05). No other statistically significant differences were found. Back and shoulder scores were correlated with poorer nutrition status, higher body mass index, and more years worked. Workplace wellness programs should address the health issues faced by CCAs through active surveillance and practical interventions to improve CCAs’ health status, prevent and manage WMSDs, and lost workdays. Research has revealed differences on scales measuring HIV knowledge between individuals from various ethnic backgrounds and cultures. Few studies have examined this knowledge with immigrant populations and persons living with HIV. This study examined HIV knowledge among persons living with HIV who were either born in Canada or in sub-Saharan Africa and, for comparison, in a sample of college students. All participants were residing in Canada. Participants completed questionnaires measuring demographic variables, sexual health behaviour, and HIV status, treatment, and knowledge. Canadian-born patients living with HIV were more likely to be older and male than the other groups. On average, patients living with HIV were diagnosed 6.4 years ago, and 80% reported having current or previous experience taking HIV medications. After adjusting for age and gender, significant differences were found between the groups on the Brief HIV Knowledge Questionnaire. Canadian-born persons living with HIV ( n = 110) scored higher than sub-Saharan African-born patients ( n = 23) and college students ( n = 81); mean percentage correct was 86, 70, and 62%, respectively ( P < .01). These results suggested that ongoing HIV education is needed for all groups, and that additional tailored and targeted educational interventions are needed to address important gaps in knowledge among persons living with HIV patients originating from Africa and among college students. We describe transitions between exercise stages of change in people with coronary artery disease (CAD) over a 6-month period following a CAD-related hospitalization and evaluate constructs from Protection Motivation Theory, Theory of Planned Behavior, Social Cognitive Theory, the Ecological Model, and participation in cardiac rehabilitation as correlates of stage transition. Seven hundred eighty-two adults hospitalized with CAD were recruited and administered a baseline survey including assessments of theory-based constructs and exercise stage of change. Mailed surveys were used to gather information concerning exercise stage of change and participation in cardiac rehabilitation 6 months later. Progression from pre-action stages between baseline and 6 month follow-up was associated with greater perceived efficacy of exercise to reduce risk of future disease, fewer barriers to exercise, more access to home exercise equipment, and participation in cardiac rehabilitation. Regression from already active stages between baseline and 6 month follow-up was associated with increased perceived susceptibility to a future CAD-related event, fewer intentions to exercise, lower self-efficacy, and more barriers to exercise. The article reports that the Canadian model of community health centres (CHCs) and community paediatricians create innovative solutions and address current issues. The CHCs-community paediatrician model creates different services ranging from clinical consultation, school-based health care, child-based and family-based programming, to board governance and policy.

Background Nurses are the largest professional group within the health care workforce, and their work is perceived as being physically demanding. Regular physical activity helps to prevent or ameliorate cardiometabolic conditions (e.g. cardiovascular disease, diabetes). It is not known whether Canadian nurses are meeting current physical activity guidelines. Objective To assess the influence of the workplace on the physical activity and cardiometabolic health of nurses from hospitals in the Champlain region of Ontario, Canada. Design A multi-centre, cross-sectional study. Setting Hospitals in the Champlain Local Health Integration Network of Ontario. Methods Nurses wore an ActiGraph accelerometer to objectively assess levels of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity measured in minutes/day in bouts ≥10 min. All completed the Perceived Workplace Environment (PWE) scale and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Height, body mass, waist circumference, blood pressure and heart rate were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was determined. Each nurse’s 5-year cardiovascular risk was calculated using the Harvard Score. Findings A total of 410 nurses (94% female; mean ± SD: age = 43 ± 12 years) from 14 hospitals participated. Nurses spent an average of 96 ± 100 min/week in bouts ≥10 min of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity; 23% of nurses met recommended physical activity guidelines. Nurses working 8- vs. 12-h shifts (16 ± 16 vs. 10 ± 11 min/day, p = 0.026), fixed vs. rotating shifts (15 ± 15 vs. 12 ± 13 min/day, p = 0.012) and casual vs. full-time (29 ± 17 vs. 13 ± 15 min/day, p < 0.001) or vs. part-time (29 ± 17 vs. 13 ± 12 min/day, p = 0.001) accumulated more moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity in bouts ≥10 min. The average PWE score was 2.4 ± 0.9, with no association between PWE scores and moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity in bouts ≥10 min (p > 0.05). Nurses working 8-h shifts, fixed shifts and in urban hospitals reported better PWE scores (p < 0.05). Nurses working fixed vs. rotating shifts had higher systolic blood pressure (median: 114 vs. 112 mmHg, p = 0.043), and nurses working in rural vs. urban hospitals had higher BMI (median: 27.8 vs. 25.6 kg/m 2 , p = 0.007) and waist circumference (median: 82.3 vs. 78.6 cm, p = 0.015). Conclusions Nurses are not meeting current physical activity guidelines (150 min of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity per week in 10-min bouts), yet exceeded these recommendations when examining their continuous (i.e. non bouts) physical activity levels. No association between the PWE and moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity was observed. Rotating vs. fixed shifts, 12- vs. 8-h shifts, and/or full-time or part-time vs. casual hours may impede nurses’ ability to meet recommended physical activity levels.
