We compared the genetic diversity and structure of wild versus captive-propagated at-risk species of freshwater mussels in Canada, Lampsilis fasciola (wavy-rayed lampmussel; WRL) and Ptychobranchus fasciolaris (kidneyshell; KS), using microsatellite-generated genotypes. No significant differences were detected using Kruskal–Wallis tests that compared the genetic diversity metrics of wild and captive-propagated WRL (from 12 mothers) and KS (from seven mothers). After effective population size (Ne) was estimated, considerable overlap was found in the estimated Ne between wild and captive populations of both species. Pairwise FST and Dest values among wild WRL, hatchery-raised WRL juveniles, and across different time periods (2008–2018) were generally low (FST = 0.007–0.043, Dest = 0.005–0.282). Pairwise FST and Dest for KS were not significant and low (0.012, 0.017). When comparing captive-reared offspring with the wild population, STRUCTURE analysis revealed strong support for a single genetic population. With at least seven females contributing to brood stock, genetic diversity was maintained. Further research is needed to assess the male contribution to each glochidial brood as well as the variability of genetic diversity in individual glochidial broods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines situations where failures of coordination have materialized as one was dealing with the difficulties of collaboration in the absence of anyone in charge, in the perspective of Canada. It is said that beneficiaries of collaboration live in a world where power, resources and information are widely distributed among many hands and minds.

The article highlights the emergence of a collaborative governance and partnerships in the health sector in Canada. Topics cited include the guiding principles of public service renewal initiative, introduction of holacracy as a distributed authority system, and goal of collaboration to reduce health care cost. Also noted are several health care organizations as a model of public governance including Canadian Partnership Against Cancer and British Columbia Provincial Health Services Authority.

The article focuses on the policy imbalance in the Canadian federation and suggests that community-based strategies may help correct it. It examines several jurisdictions that have attempted to address this policy imbalance with respect to community outcomes by accepting the principle of subsidiarity and demonstrating a willingness to enter into relationships of shared governance with locally rooted partners.

The article presents information on how to facilitate contingent cooperation in Canada. The country's experience with collaboration notwithstanding, the successful coordination of people and resources is far from the norm anywhere. While public-private partnerships are much in vogue today, government involvement in partnerships is frequently criticized. After examining various types of collaboration, it is evident that while most people appreciate the need to cooperate, the requirements for successful cooperation are not well understood.

A collaborative population-based project for bowel cancer prevention provided an ideal opportunity to involve nursing students in applying theory to practice. In this article, described is how the engagement of students and subsequent application of a population health template contributed to a community-based bowel cancer education and screening campaign. The campaign was a valuable teaching-learning experience for students and contributed to the goal of reducing and reporting on the number of bowel cancer deaths in the local area. Project evaluation data provide insight into student learning outcomes and reveal ways to strengthen the population health initiative for future years. Originally, a scholarly pursuit of discovery and application developed in response to growing rates of bowel cancer and advances in effective screening programs, the project has evolved into the domain of teaching and learning. This evolution has benefited students, project organizers and community members.
