Aim: Understanding how grain size affects our ability to characterize species responses to ongoing climate change is of crucial importance in the context of an increasing awareness for the substantial difference that exists between coarse spatial resolution macroclimatic data sets and the microclimate actually experienced by organisms. Climate change impacts on biodiversity are expected to peak in mountain areas, wherein the differences between macro and microclimates are precisely the largest. Based on a newly generated fine‐scale environmental data for the Canary Islands, we assessed whether data at 100 m resolution is able to provide more accurate predictions than available data at 1 km resolution. We also analysed how future climate suitability predictions of island endemic bryophytes differ depending on the grain size of grids. Location: Canary Islands. Time period: Present (1979–2013) and late‐century (2071–2100). Taxa: Bryophytes. Methods: We compared the accuracy and spatial predictions using ensemble of small models for 14 Macaronesian endemic bryophyte species. We used two climate data sets: CHELSA v1.2 (~1 km) and CanaryClim v1.0 (100 m), a downscaled version of the latter utilizing data from local weather stations. CanaryClim also encompasses future climate data from five individual model intercomparison projects for three warming shared socio‐economic pathways. Results: Species distribution models generated from CHELSA and CanaryClim exhibited a similar accuracy, but CanaryClim predicted buffered warming trends in mid‐elevation ridges. CanaryClim consistently returned higher proportions of newly suitable pixels (8%–28%) than CHELSA models (0%–3%). Consequently, the proportion of species predicted to occupy pixels of uncertain suitability was higher with CHELSA (3–8 species) than with CanaryClim (0–2 species). Main conclusions: The resolution of climate data impacted the predictions rather than the performance of species distribution models. Our results highlight the crucial role that fine‐resolution climate data sets can play in predicting the potential distribution of both microrefugia and new suitable range under warming climate. The article focuses on the identification of the species Radula carringtonii Jack. It says that the species has been considered an Atlantic species from the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores based on the specimens collected in Ireland in 1881. It mentions that the specimens from La Réunion are not related to the core of R. carringtonii resulting to the deletion of R. Carringtonii from the checklists and red lists of liverworts from the Mascarene archipelago.

Islands have traditionally been considered as migratory and evolutionary dead ends for two main reasons: island colonizers are typically assumed to lose their dispersal power, and continental back colonization has been regarded as unlikely because of niche preemption. The hypothesis that islands might actually represent dynamic refugia and migratory stepping stones for species that are effective dispersers, and in particular, for spore-producing plants, is formally tested here, using the archipelagos of the Azores, Canary Islands, and Madeira, as a model. Population genetic analyses based on nuclear microsatellite variation indicate that dispersal ability of the moss Platyhypnidium riparioides does not decrease in the island setting. The analyses further show that, unlike island populations, mainland (southwestern Europe and North Africa) populations underwent a severe bottleneck during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Our results thus refute the traditional view of islands as the end of the colonization road and point to a different perception of North Atlantic archipelagos as major sources of biodiversity for the postglacial recolonization of Europe by spore-producing plants. In this paper we provide new bryophyte reports for Macaronesia as a whole, for single archipelagos, and for single islands. New to Macaronesia are Aneura pseudopinguis, Didymodon brachyphyllus, Diplophyllum obtusifolium, Distichium capillaceum, and Schizymenium pontevedrense. First archipelago reports concern Brachythecium albicans (Canary Islands), Bryum dichotomum (Cape Verde), B. kunzei(Canary Islands), Homalothecium aureum (Cape Verde), Hydrogonium boUeamim (Madeira), Isopterygiopsis pukheUa (Canary Islands), P oh lia cruda (Madeira), Pterygoneurum ovatum (Canary Islands), Schistidium flaccidum (Madeira), and Tortellafasciculata (Madeira). This contribution lists a series of new records as well as deletions from the bryophyte check-list of the Canary and Cape Verde islands based on field observations as well as revisions of herbarium material. Rhabdoweisia crispata is reported for the first time in the Canary Islands, new to Macaronesia. Aneura pinguis is a new record for the Cape Verde archipelago. Within the Canaries, 14 species are reported as new for several individual islands: Lejeunea cavifolia, Plagiochila stricta, Grimmia ungeri, and Scorpiurium deflexifolium in La Palma; Metzgeria leptoneura in Gran Canaria; Plagiochila maderensis, Pohlia cruda, Pteryginandrum filiforme, and Tortella inflexa in Tenerife; Plagiochila virginica in El Hierro and Fuerteventura; Cratoneuron filicinum in La Gomera; Orthotrichum acuminatum in El Hierro and Gran Canaria; Cryptoleptodon longisetus and Polytrichum juniperinum in Fuerteventura. In the Cape Verde Islands, Orthotrichum diaphanum is reported for the first time from Santo Antão. Revisions of herbarium material also conclude that Grimmia donniana, Sciuro-hypnum populeum and Plagiochila spinulosa were erroneously reported from the Canary Islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
