The extreme temperature has become more frequent and intense due to global warming, particularly in dry regions, causing devastating impacts on humans and ecosystems. The transboundary Amu river basin (ARB) is the most vulnerable region in Central Asia (CA) to extreme weather linked to climate change. This study aimed to project warm and cold extremes in ARB for four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5) and two time-horizons, 2020–2059 and 2060–2099, using daily maximum (Tmax) and minimum temperature (Tmin) simulations of global climate models (GCMs) of Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project phase six (CMIP6). Results revealed that the basin's west experiences more hot extremes and the east more cold extremes. Climate change would cause a significant increase in the annual mean of Tmax and Tmin. However, the increase in mean Tmin would be much higher (5.0ºC) than the mean Tmax (4.6ºC). It would cause an increase in the hot extremes and a decrease in the cold extremes in the basin. The higher increase in the hot extremes would be in the west, while the higher decrease in the cold extreme in the basin's east. The number of days above 40℃ would increase from 45 to 60 days in the basin's west and northwest compared to the historical period. The number of days below − 20℃ would decrease up to 45 days in the basin's east. Overall, the decrease in cold extremes would be much faster than the increase in hot extremes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assessment of the thermal bioclimatic environmental changes is important to understand ongoing climate change implications on agriculture, ecology, and human health. This is particularly important for the climatologically diverse transboundary Amy Darya River basin, a major source of water and livelihood for millions in Central Asia. However, the absence of longer period observed temperature data is a major obstacle for such analysis. This study employed a novel approach by integrating compromise programming and multicriteria group decision–making methods to evaluate the efficiency of four global gridded temperature datasets based on observation data at 44 stations. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by comparing the results obtained using symmetrical uncertainty, a machine learning similarity assessment method. The most reliable gridded data was used to assess the spatial distribution of global warming-induced unidirectional trends in thermal bioclimatic indicators (TBI) using a modified Mann–Kendall test. Ranking of the products revealed Climate Prediction Center (CPC) temperature as most efficient in reconstruction observed temperature, followed by TerraClimate and Climate Research Unit. The ranking of the product was consistent with that obtained using SU. Assessment of TBI trends using CPC data revealed an increase in the Tmin in the coldest month over the whole basin at a rate of 0.03–0.08 °C per decade, except in the east. Besides, an increase in diurnal temperature range and isothermally increased in the east up to 0.2 °C and 0.6% per decade, respectively. The results revealed negative implications of thermal bioclimatic change on water, ecology, and public health in the eastern mountainous region and positive impacts on vegetation in the west and northwest. Droughts significantly affect socioeconomic and the environment primarily by decreasing the water availability of a region. This study assessed the changes in drought characteristics in Central Asia's transboundary Amu river basin for four shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). The precipitation, maximum, and minimum temperature (Pr, Tmx, and Tmn) simulations of 19 global climate models (GCMs) of the coupled model intercomparison project phase 6 (CMIP6) were used to select the best models to prepare the multimodel ensemble (MME) mean. The standard precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) was used to estimate droughts for multiple timescales from Pr and potential evapotranspiration (PET) derived from Tmx and Tmn. The changes in the frequency and spatial distribution of droughts for different severities and timescales were evaluated for the two future periods, 2020–2059 and 2060–2099, compared to the base period of 1975–2014. The study revealed four GCMs, AWI-CM-1–1-MR, CMCC-ESM2, INM-CM4-8, and MPI-ESM1-2-LR, as the most suitable for projections of droughts in the study area. Results revealed a decrease in Pr by 3 to 12% in the near future and by 3 to 9% in the far future in most parts of the basin for different SSPs. However, there is almost no change in PET in the near future while increasing by 10 to 70% in the far future. The changes in Pr and PET would cause a noticeably decrease in drought occurrence in the near future, particularly for moderate droughts by − 50% for SSP5-8.5 and an increase in the far future up to 30% for SSP3-7.0. The increase in all severities of droughts was projected mostly in the center and northwest of the basin. Accurate representation of precipitation over time and space is vital for hydro-climatic studies. Appropriate selection of gridded precipitation data (GPD) is important for regions where long-term in situ records are unavailable and gauging stations are sparse. This study was an attempt to identify the best GPD for the data-poor Amu Darya River basin, a major source of freshwater in Central Asia. The performance of seven GPDs and 55 precipitation gauge locations was assessed. A novel algorithm, based on the integration of a compromise programming index (CPI) and a global performance index (GPI) as part of a multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) method, was employed to evaluate the performance of the GPDs. The CPI and GPI were estimated using six statistical indices representing the degree of similarity between in situ and GPD properties. The results indicated a great degree of variability and inconsistency in the performance of the different GPDs. The CPI ranked the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) precipitation as the best product for 20 out of 55 stations analysed, followed by the Princeton University Global Meteorological Forcing (PGF) and Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS). Conversely, GPI ranked the CPC product the best product for 25 of the stations, followed by PGF and CHRIPS. Integration of CPI and GPI ranking through MCGDM revealed that the CPC was the best precipitation product for the Amu River basin. The performance of PGF was also closely aligned with that of CPC.
