The allometric relationship among different functional traits is an ecological strategy for plants to promote resource utilization, which indicates the ability of plants to adapt to environmental changes coordinately. In this study, we conducted a field survey on Haloxylon ammodendron and H. persicum among different terrains (dune crest, eastern slope, western slope and inter-dune) in the Gurbantunggut Desert, obtained their quantitative and morphological characteristics, and analyzed their allometric relationships between plant height and canopy radius, plant height and basal diameter by using standardized major axis estimation. We found that: (1) The dominated terrains of H. ammodendron and H. persicum were different; (2) The individual morphology of the two Haloxylon species changed significantly with the terrains (p < 0.05), with the largest and smallest ones growing on the eastern slope and the inter-dune lowland, respectively; (3) Fixed allometric patterns were observed in the above-ground parts of the two Haloxylon species, as the growth of canopy and basal stem was preferentially to plant height; (4) These allometric relationships were significantly affected by the terrain, and exhibited discrepancy between two species, they both invested less in plant height in windy habitats, such as the dune crest and western slope, but H. ammodendron growing on the western slope and H. persicum growing on the eastern slope invested more in basal diameter for strengthening mechanical support and resources acquisition, respectively. These results indicated that both studied species adopted an ecological strategy that allocating more resources to horizontal expansion rather than vertical growth, the terrain has an important influence on the allometric relationship of their above-ground parts, and the trade-off mechanism of main components investing was different for these two species due to habitat heterogeneity and ecological adaptability. Aims: Groundwater is an important water source for plants in desert regions and greatly affects the performance and survival of desert plants. Moreover, the effects of groundwater variations on desert plants are not completely understood. This study aims to investigate the groundwater dependency of two dominant woody species (Haloxylon ammodendron and H. persicum) in the Gurbantunggut Desert of Central Asia, and evaluate their water use and physiological responses under a decline in groundwater depth. Methods: Oxygen stable isotopes of soil water, groundwater and xylem water as well as the IsoSource model were used to determine seasonal variations in the water sources of the two studied species along a groundwater depth gradient. In addition, the plant water potential and stomatal conductance were measured to determine the physiological performance. Results: (1) Although both species extracted groundwater, H. ammodendron was much more groundwater dependent; (2) the two species exhibited significant seasonal variations in their degree of groundwater dependency, which was relatively lower in the wet season, and higher during the dry period; and (3) when the groundwater availability declined, both species reduced their groundwater use, although only H. ammodendron exhibited a significantly negative physiological response. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that plants with different water sources respond differently to the decline of groundwater depth and the effects of groundwater drawdowns are determined by the groundwater dependency of desert plants. A better understanding of desert plant responses to water availability variations is crucial for modeling, predicting and managing desert ecosystems in the context of global change. Drought has become a major threat to regional sustainable development in drylands. Ecological drought, emphasizing the process of drought impacts on ecosystems in coupled human-natural systems, has been posing large risks to the stability of groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) in drylands. Yet, the interconnected avenues via which ecological drought drives vegetation transition, ecological resilience and ecosystem services in GDEs with species-specific traits remain elusive, especially in arid endorheic basins. Here, we combine comprehensive field measurements derived from representative groundwater depth transects in Central Asia and simulations obtained from the stochastic eco-hydrological models and the Langevin approach, we find that two groundwater-dependent species, the salt-tolerant Haloxylon ammodendron and salt-sensitive Haloxylon persicum , exhibit contrasting water use strategies being driven by variations in eco-physiological traits and environmental regimes. Nonetheless, both the low-resilient H. ammodendron and high-resilient H. persicum vegetation tend to show bistable transition corresponding to vegetated and bare soils under drought stress with stochastic noises and time delays. Alarmingly, ecological drought is accelerating catastrophic transitions in both Haloxylon ecosystems induced by diminishing ecological flows, depleting soil moisture, and aggravating salinization, together with climate forcing. In particular, exacerbated drought stress reduces ecological resilience, enhances the likelihood of catastrophic shifts, and reduces ecosystem services of GDEs in arid endorheic basins. Our results highlight that ecological drought adaptation strategies must account for resilience maintenance by balancing water scarcity, water overuse, and water/soil quality to avoid accelerating regime shifts in dryland ecosystems.
