Surface treatment waste (HW17) contains a large amount of toxic and corrosive components, which may be harmful to the public health if improper disposal. To understand its metabolism is a prerequisite for the management optimization. In this study, the metabolic network for HW17 in Chengdu city (Sichuan Province, Southwestern China) is constructed by fusion of administrative data and web textual data to identify the associated issues through an investigation of the waste flow and direction. On such basis, a dual-objective mixed-integer linear programming model, with three scenarios (cost minimization, risk minimization, both the cost and risk minimization), is established to optimize the metabolic network for enhancing the management efficiency. The results show that the total HW17 in 2019 is 32,846.14 tons in Chengdu city. Of this, 0.4% of HW17 does not have downstream metabolic paths, and only 23.51% of it is completely disposed. About 78.08% of the generated HW17 is transported outside the metropolitan area of Chengdu city for disposal, highlighted by an open-loop feature. After optimization, the network cost reduces by 3.91% among the three scenarios, and risk decreases by 87.85%. In view of these results, this study further discusses the capacities of the recycling centers and disposal centers, as well as the limitations and uncertainty. Water resources scarcity has threatened the coordinative development of demographics, society and economy. As a typical rapidly urbanizing area and an emerging megacity in China, Chengdu is confronting the pressure of inadequate water supply. The present study divides the macroeconomic factors that affect the water resource supply and demand balance into six major subsystems: water resources supply, water demand, water drainage, population, ecological environment and economy. The combining variable interaction description and predictive simulation models are applied to simulate the water supply and demand ratio (S:D) from 2005 to 2035. Further, this study designs different development scenarios to simulate the change of S:D ratios by altering the parameter values of driving factors. The results show that: (1) the S:D ratio will decline if the current development scenario continues, implying the serious water resources shortage and the severe water supply-demand conflict in Chengdu; (2) socio-economic water demand and wastewater/rainwater reuse are the key driving parameters of S:D ratio, especially the water consumption per ten thousand yuan of industrial value-added; (3) the S:D ratio will increase from 0.92 in the current baseline scenario to 1.06 in the integrated optimization scenario in 2025, and the long-term planning brings 2035 from 0.71 to 1.03, with the proportion of unconventional water supply rise to 38% and 61%, respectively. This study can provide a decision-making tool for policy-makers to explore plausible policy scenarios necessary for bridging the gap between the water supply and demand in megacities. In order to investigate the effects of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown on air quality in cities in southwest China, a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS) and other online equipments were used to measure the air pollution in Chengdu, one of the megacities in this area, before and during the lockdown period. It was found that the concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2), sulfur dioxide (SO 2) and carbon monoxide (CO) decreased by 38.6%, 77.5%, 47.0%, 35.1% and 14.1%, respectively, while the concentration of ozone (O 3) increased by 57.5% from the time before to the time during lockdown. All particles collected during the study period could be divided into eight categories: biomass burning (BB), coal combustion (CC), vehicle emissions (VE), cooking emissions (CE), Dust, K-nitrate (K–NO 3), K-sulfate (K–SO 4) and K-sulfate-nitrate (K-SN) particles, and their contributions changed significantly after the beginning of lockdown. Compared to before lockdown, the contribution of VE particles experienced the largest reduction (by 14.9%), whereas the contributions of BB and CE particles increased by 7.0% and 7.3%, respectively, during the lockdown period. Regional transmission was critical for pollution formation before lockdown, whereas the pollution that occurred during the lockdown period was caused mainly by locally emitted particles (such as VE, CE and BB particles). Weighted potential source contribution function (WPSCF) analysis further verified and emphasized the difference in the contribution of regional transmission for pollution formation before and during lockdown. Waste classification is regarded as one of the most important strategies for waste management, and its success depends on the active participation of the public. Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and attitude-behavior-condition (A-B-C) theory, this research investigated the key factors affecting residents' domestic waste classification intention (WCI) and waste classification behavior (WCB), and explored the moderating effects of three external factors including infrastructure (INF), government publicity (GP), and incentive measures (IM) on the intention-behavior relationship. The valid data were collected from 584 residents via conducting a face-to-face interview in Chengdu, a pilot city of waste classification in China, and analyzed by using the structural equation model (SEM). Results showed that residents' WCI and WCB had a significant discrepancy with the average values of 4.07 and 2.81, respectively. Attitude (AT), perceived behavior control (PBC) and classification knowledge (CK) were significantly related to residents' WCI, with AT (β = 0.65, P < 0.001) having the greatest direct impact. Meanwhile, CK and INF had a stronger impact on the WCB than WCI. GP indirectly affected WCB through the intermediary effect of CK. In addition, INF and GP had a positively moderating effect on residents' waste classification intention-behavior relationship and can facilitate the intention-behavior conversion. By contrast, IM failed to promote the conversion of residents' classification intention into behavior, and had no direct significant influence on residents' WCB. Finally, some relevant policy suggestions were put forward for the new pilot cities of waste classification in China. • Key factors affecting residents' WCI and WCB were investigated. • Moderating effects of external factors on intention-behavior relation was explored. • Attitude had the greatest direct influence on residents' WCI. • CK and Infrastructure had a stronger impact on WCB than WCI. • Infrastructure and GP can strengthen the intention-behavior conversion.
