Abstract

The article features the program Eliciting Vocation Through Knowledge and Engagement (EVOKE), a Lilly Endowment Inc.-funded grant for the Loyola University Chicago received in January 2001 under the Program for the Theological Exploration of Vocation. This program was designed for discernment of the true callings both of the university and of the students. EVOKE has helped the university by emphasizing the values of love, heroism, ingenuity, and self-awareness. The grant provided the university with implementation strategies which transformed the Loyolans into individuals who are knowledgeable and engaged in the work of vocation. Such effects have made the Loyolans commit to a mission-centered language and concept of vocation resulting to the reliving of the Iganatian soul in the university.

Abstract

The article reports on the findings of the survey of Catholic religious communities conducted by VocationMatch.com. in Chicago, Illinois. The Web site's 2008 annual Survey on Trends in Religious Vocations shows that 69% of the communities have reported increased vocation inquiries into religious life. The 2009 survey reveals that communities with effective online representation and promotion strategies stand the best chance to benefit from the significant interest in vocations.

The article focuses on the National Action Plan released by the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC) that aims to renew outreach efforts to youth and young adults in the U.S. The action plan which resulted from the Moving Forward in Hope symposium conducted in Chicago, Illinois in September 2010 invites the youth and young adults to become a religious sister, brother or priest. The three priorities under the action plan which will aid in the promotion of religious life are discussed.
