The results that we present, account for the meanings associated with discourses of Chilean older people, about old age and aging. As a frame of reference, we draw on critical gerontology and feminist and intersectional approaches to the conditions of aging in Latin America. We work from the biographical method. The reiteration of negative stereotypes in relation to the "old subject" was verified, considering illness, loss and precariousness as predominant characteristics. Similarly, we observe tensions in the identification processes associated with old age, distancing themselves from the negative stereotypes associated with this stage. We verified continuity and changes in the gender role. We present speeches that emphasize self-care and social participation with age peers, as an emergency against negative stereotypes. The influence of ageism in discourses is concluded, reinforcing the devaluation of this stage for those who live it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To establish thew association between different dimensions of religiosity - organizational, non-organizational and intrinsic - and physical and functional health indicators in older people in Chile. Methods: Data from the Fifth Survey on Quality of Life in Old Age 2019 were used. Descriptive and explanatory analyses were performed using logistic, linear and multinomial regression models, with dependent variables being self-perception of health, functional dependence, number of chronic diseases and perception of health compared with other people of the same age. As predictors, indicators of the three dimensions of religiosity (DUREL Scale) were included, controlling for the MOS-SS Social Support Scale, Apgar Family Functioning Scale, educational level, gender, age, and living with a partner. Results: Almost a third of older Chileans attend religious services frequently, and half of them pray frequently. On a range of 1 to 5, the mean intrinsic religiosity is 3.94. 46% perceive their health to be good/very good and about half perceive their health as better than their peers. On 0 to 5, the mean number of chronic diseases is 1.69. 6% are classified as functionally dependent. The only significant relationship observed was between religious attendance and a lower probability of presenting functional dependency; on the other hand, praying increases such probabilities and a relationship between attendance and a better perception of health compared with other people of the same age. This article analyzes the main interests and information needs of older people in Chile during the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to provide guidance to improve media and information literacy programs. A qualitative descriptive methodology is applied, with a phenomenographic approach, and in-depth semi-structured interviews are used with four elderly people (between 60 and 79 years old) residing in Chile. e analysis of the results reflects that most of the activities carried out by this group in digital and social media have as their objective communication, entertainment, learning and the search for information (according to diverse personal interests); conducting business procedures and transactions based on personal and daily needs also becomes relevant during isolation. . However, the sustained use of platforms such as Google, Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp facilitates access to a large amount of misleading or false information, and makes the selection and validation process more complex. In this sense, media and information literacy programs are configured as sustained and necessary inclusion initiatives to counteract this phenomenon, ensure the critical use of information, and develop skills that allow them to live with digital autonomy. The process of population aging will lead to an increase in health problems in older people, mainly related to their functionality. Accordingly, the countries of the Region of the Americas must begin to act to meet this challenge. One of the fundamental tasks involves the ability to measure and monitor functionality in the population. The tools used to evaluate functionality focus mainly on the basic activities of daily living, which limits their preventive capacity, since instrumental activities provide a better prognosis. Using the case of Chile, challenges for the Region were identified, mainly related to the advantages of adopting new methodologies that not only evaluate functional capacity, as current strategies do, but also detect its deterioration early and monitor its stages throughout the dependence stage in older people. Objective: This work analyzes the transformations of formal and informal care in rural territories in Spain and Chile. Method: We describe the results of two qualitative studies that carried out interviews in two rural areas. The interviews addressed the characteristics of the formal and informal care received by older adults. The data is discussed in the light of research on care crises, the support generation and older caregiver women, from the perspective of rural territories. Results: on one hand, identify the presence of male caregivers, the extended family, and neighborhood-community networks in the provision of informal care. We discuss the need to consider the socio-cultural particularities of rural territories in the design of formal care services. This article evaluates the explicit negative and positive stereotypes about aging among health professionals considering the presence of COVID-19. The context of structural inequalities for older people made the pandemic a promoter of those precarizations, which is relevant to consider for further studies. This research is descriptive and cross-sectional, with 378 surveys answered in May 2020, 308 health professionals from Chile were evaluated. The Aging Image Scale (Levy et al., 2004) was used, after cross-cultural validation and evaluation of the metric properties for this context, which generated the construction of an index. The results show that health professionals have a specific image of aging, highlighting positive stereotypes (capable, active, wise, positive, caring, family-centered) over negative stereotypes (wrinkled, slow walking and sick). It is concluded that there are some indicators of age discrimination among health professionals, according to the attributes of those who responded. Objective: to identify factors associated with the interest in working with the elderly as a future job arket among nursing students from Brazil and Chile. Method: cross-sectional analytical study, conducted between March and September 2018, including 885 nursing students. A form was used with sociodemographic information related to family and areas of activity and the Family Support Perception Inventory. Statistical analysis included bivariate associations and multiple logistic regression models. Results: 27.5% of the students considered working with the elderly as a possible professional performance, without association with family variables. There were positive associations between those who attended public institutions and cited working with children and negative associations among older students. Conclusion: for most nursing students in Brazil and Chile, working with the elderly was not considered as a possibility of professional performance; this possibility was lower among older students and higher among students from public institutions. Objective: The aim of this research was to analyse the association between successful aging (SA) and subjective well-being (SWB) in different domains. Method: The study is quantitative and cross-sectional, with a sample consisting of 800 older people, including 569 indigenous (Aymara and Mapuche) participants living in northern and southern Chile. Results: Domains associated with SA are satisfaction with health, satisfaction with social relationships, satisfaction with future security, and satisfaction with spiritual and religious experiences. SA is also positively associated with being a woman, being young, and not being indigenous. Conclusion: The research has two main practical implications. First, SWB domains may be incorporated into socio-health interventions as they relate to elements that can be changed or improved (health, social inclusion, security, and beliefs). Second, this study suggests a situation of risk among older indigenous Chileans, confirming the premise that the life paths of indigenous Chileans at social risk give rise to a more socially unequal old age with; therefore, it is important to analyse positive aspects that promote better old age. Introduction: Background: international physical activity (PA) guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous PA or 75 minutes of vigorous PA weekly; however, the proportion of the Chilean population who meet this recommendation across the lifespan remains unknown. Objective: to characterize PA patterns by age categories and sex in the Chilean population. Methods: participants from the Chilean Health Survey 2009-2010 (5,293 individuals) were included in this study. PA types (transport, moderate and vigorous) and sedentary behavior were measured using the global physical activity questionnaire (GPAQ). Time spent on different intensities of physical activity by age and sex was investigated using regression analyses. Results: compared to participants aged < 20 years (reference group), commuting-related PA decreased for both men and women from the age of 60 years onwards. Moderate intensity PA increases for both sexes reaching the highest level between the ages of 40-49 years, and then it shows a decline with increasing age. Vigorous PA reaches the highest levels between ages 30-39 and 40-49 years for women and men, respectively. Time spent sitting increased markedly on participants aged 60 years and above, reaching the highest levels at the age of 80 years. Conclusion: in the Chilean population, there are clear patterns of change in PA levels and sitting time across age groups. These findings may help informing stakeholders on tailoring interventions to increase PA levels, especially at ages when the population is more likely to reach their lowest levels of activity. Chile is facing changes associated with the demographic transition. So far, these challenges have been framed as age related. This has contributed to approaching a broad set of issues from a narrow perspective. The focus on aging has fragmented a multidisciplinary problem into different parts--particularly health and social policies--with different actors dealing with it from the perspective of their own sector. This process has generated an incomplete picture, preventing the definition and measurement of dependency and long-term care, and hindering a coordinated response to these issues. This article advocates for a change in the definition of the problem, by adopting the concept of long-term care, in order to gain a deeper and more comprehensive perspective on the issues arising from the situation that Chile is experiencing. Introduction and Aims: Pancreatic steatosis is an incidental radiologic finding in asymptomatic patients, and its clinical importance is unclear., Primary Aim: to study the prevalence of pancreatic steatosis (PS) in consecutive patients registered at our hospital, that underwent computed axial tomography (CAT) scanning of the abdomen and pelvis, excluding known pancreatic diseases. Secondary aim: to review the association of PS with the demographic and clinical data of the patients, as well as with hepatic steatosis (HS)., Materials and Methods: An observational study was conducted on adult patients that had CAT scans of the abdomen and pelvis., Definitions: a) tissue density was measured in Hounsfield units (HU) in five 1 cm 2 areas of the pancreas, three areas of the spleen, and in segments VI and VII of the liver; b) fatty pancreas: a difference < -10 HU between the mean pancreas and mean spleen densities; and c) fatty liver: density < 40 HU. We registered the epidemiologic and laboratory data of the patients. The association of those factors with the presence of PS was analyzed using SPSS version 24.0 software, and statistical significance was set at a p < 0.05., Results: Of the 203 patients, PS was found in 61 (30%). The patients with PS were significantly older and had a higher body mass index. We found no significant association with the rest of the parameters studied, nor with HS (55 patients). None of the patients had symptoms attributable to a disease of the exocrine pancreas., Conclusions: Fatty infiltration of the pancreas is a frequent finding in CAT scans, and its clinical importance is unclear. Background and Objective: In this article we sought to characterize the Long Stay Establishments for the Elderly in Chile, besides presenting the services offered in the public and private., Material and Methods: It is a quantitative, cross-sectional descriptive study, with secondary information source. We analyze all establishments in the country registered with the National Service of the Elderly. As of November 2015, a total of 724 establishments were registered and distributed in 169 neighborhoods throughout the country in which 16,985 adults aged 60 and over were institutionalized., Results: Most of the establishments (65.9% [n=246/724]) are private, 47.5% of them (n=344/724) are located in the metropolitan region of Santiago. Of the residents' health, only 26.5% are considered functional brave, 28.3% are physically handicapped and 8.8% are mentally handicapped. Most establishments offer manual activities, physical exercises, memory classes, cultural classes and recreational or touristic tours. Proportionally of the activities offered were mostly private ones., Conclusions: In Chile, most of the establishments are private, located in the metropolitan region where there is the largest supply deficit of this type of service, with an occupancy rate of 90.7%, with 72.4% women and almost half 47.7% with some physical or psychic dependence., (Copyright © 2023 SEGG. Objective. To estimate the relative and absolute costs of a home-based health care system for dependent older adults in Chile and to consider the methodological factors to take into account in estimates for other models in other countries. Methods. Sex- and age-specific prevalence rates were used, based on microdata from the National Dependency Survey (ENDPM 2009), and three scenarios were projected for 2012-2020. The beneficiary population and the demand were estimated for 12 home-based health care programs. The characteristics of the programs (number of hours and type of care) were based on expert opinions, adjusted through a literature review. Public and private system wages/hours were used. Results. Overall, 20.3% of people over 65 years of age would be beneficiaries of the system; 21.7% of all women and 18.4% of all men, for a total of 336 874 people in 2012. The annual cost of the system is 1.214 billion dollars for 2012, equivalent to 0.45% of GDP (gross domestic product). This figure could increase by between 32.1% and 33.1% by 2020. Conclusions. The cost of an initial system for dependent older adults in Chile is relatively low in comparison to the models seen in industrialized countries. In terms of methodology, it is particularly important for there to be prior discussion of the desired model to be implemented and the financial capacity to achieve this. This study analyzes the quality of life for a sample of 285 institutionalized adults with intellectual disabilities. Quality of life, as assessed by professionals, is conceptualized according to the eight domains model from Schalock and Verdugo. The study also offers evidence of the adequacy (reliability and validity) of the Cross-cultural Measure of Quality of Life Indicators for use with this population. The results revealed significant differences in importance and use of the different dimensions of quality of life, and evaluation ratings of quality of life, based on the degree of disability of the participants. Length of institutionalization significantly impacted on ratings of importance of the different domains of quality of life. Discussion on further research on perceptions of service providers concerning the quality of life of its users and the impact of institutionalization is included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to determine anthropometric and physiological patterns and compare the effect of physical activity in older adults from Arica, Chile. One hundred elderly aged from 60 years on, participated in this study. In this population, we proceeded to measure weight, height and calculated body mass index (BMI) and also obtained records of vital capacity and maximal oxygen consumption. Then through blood samples, hematocrit and haemoglobin were determined. The population was categorized in age ranges and separated by gender. Then by simple questionnaire of activities, they were separated into active and sedentary older adults. The results obtained indicate that the active population has a better record than the sedentary population, both in women as well as in men. When analized according to sex, similar results were observed. Spirometry records of the entire study population are very low. We conclude that physical activity is an important factor in the quality of life of people in the so-called third age, supporting theories of an active and successful aging. The study also reaffirms the behavior of the adult population over 60 years is in reality a complex and multifactorial phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Describe the usability, actionability and understanding of videos to promote exercise at home online during the COVID-19 pandemic, analyzing the characteristics of the population, their satisfaction, adherence and barriers to physical exercise., Material and Methods: A descriptive, non-experimental and cross-sectional observational design study, with a quantitative approach. Home-based videos of physical exercise and education about pain were created for people over 60 years old and distributed in the Metropolitan Region (Chile) during the months of October to December 2020. Participants had to use these videos independently at home during 4 weeks. A sample who received these videos were then voluntarily surveyed., Results: Thirty-four participants rated the videos as understandable and actionable. Usability was lower in people who perceived a lower level of technological management. Average adherence was 2 days a week for 2.5 weeks. The main perceived barrier was the lack of will, which showed a greater tendency in people who performed physical exercise in a group way before the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic., Conclusions: The videos were well evaluated by the elderly population, however the technological gap can be a limitation to favor an easy and simple use. Background: Handgrip strength (HS) and peak oxygen consumption (Vo2peak) are powerful predictors of cardiovascular risk, although it is unknown which of the two variables is the better predictor., Aim: The objective of the following study was to relate HS and Vo2peak to cardiovascular risk markers in older Chilean women., Methods: Physically active adult women (n=51; age, 69±4.7years) participated in this study. The HS and Vo2peak were evaluated and related to the anthropometric variables of body mass, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist ratio (WR), and waist height ratio (WHR), as well as with the cardiovascular variables systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) and cardiac recovery in one minute (RHR1). A multilinear regression model was used for the analysis of the associated variables (P<.05)., Results: The cardiovascular risk markers associated (P<.05) with the handgrip strength of the dominant limb (HS DL ) were body mass, BMI, WR, and WHR. The handgrip strength of the non-dominant limb (HS NDL ) was associated with body mass. Vo2peak was associated with body mass, BMI, HC and RHR1. The multilinear regression model showed a value of r=0.43 in HS DL , r=0.39 in HS NDL and r=0.69 in peak Vo2., Conclusion: Although HS and Vo2peak were related to cardiovascular risk markers, Vo2peak offers greater associative power with these cardiovascular risk factors., (Copyright © 2017 SEGG.
