Objectives: The prevention of mother‐to‐child transmission of HIV has been a global success. But little is known about the growth parameters of infants delivered by mothers with HIV or the drug resistance of infants with HIV in China. The study aimed to assess growth parameters and drug resistance in Chinese infants exposed to HIV. Methods: We conducted an 18‐month longitudinal follow‐up study of 3283 infants (3222 without HIV; 61 with HIV) born to mothers with HIV in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region between January 2015 and December 2021. The weight and length of all participants was recorded. In addition, genetic subtypes and drug resistance analysis were performed for infants with HIV. Results: Compared with infants without HIV, those with HIV had significantly lower weight/length Z‐scores, except at 18 months of age. The length/age Z‐scores of infants with HIV was significantly reduced, except at 1 month of age. The weight/age Z‐scores of infants with HIV were significantly lower at all follow‐up time points. The weight/length Z‐scores of male infants without HIV were significantly lower than for female infants without HIV at all follow‐up time points. Male infants without HIV had lower length/age and weight/age Z‐scores than female infants at the remaining follow‐up points, except at 1 month of age. Of a total of 61 infants with HIV, subtype and drug‐resistance data were obtained from 37 (60.66%) samples. Infants with HIV were dominated by the CRF01_AE genotype and showed a diversity of mutation sites dominated by non‐nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor resistance. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates the growth of infants exposed to HIV in southwest China and provides detailed information on subtype distribution and drug resistance of those with HIV. Aims: To identify health literacy profiles in individuals receiving haemodialysis and to explore how these profiles interact with individuals' self‐efficacy, engagement with traditional dietary habits, self‐reported fluid restriction and relative‐interdialytic weight gain. Design: A cross‐sectional study engaging nephrology departments from four hospitals in Guangdong Province, China. Methods: A sample of 433 individuals receiving haemodialysis participated between December 2018 and July 2019. We assessed health literacy, self‐efficacy and self‐reported fluid restriction using the Health Literacy Questionnaire, the Fluid Self‐efficacy Scale and the Fluid Adherence Subscale, respectively. Traditional dietary habits, including daily tea drinking, soup drinking and preserved food consumption, were measured using three yes/no questions. Relative‐interdialytic weight gain was calculated by dividing the mean interdialytic weight gain (from three recent intervals) by dry weight. Latent profile analysis and structural equation modelling were performed. Results: Three health literacy profiles were identified: low, moderate and high. Compared to those in the low health literacy profile, individuals in high and moderate health literacy profiles demonstrated an indirect association with reduced relative‐interdialytic weight gain. This reduction can be attributed to their higher self‐efficacy levels, decreased reliance on dietary habits and higher self‐reported fluid restrictions. Conclusions: Most participants exhibited either low or moderate levels of health literacy. Improving health literacy has the potential to promote self‐efficacy and foster effective fluid restriction, ultimately leading to a reduction in relative‐interdialytic weight gain in individuals receiving haemodialysis. Impact: This study reveals heterogeneity in health literacy levels among individuals receiving haemodialysis and illuminates the connections between an individual's entire spectrum of health literacy and fluid management. These findings provide valuable insights for developing person‐centred fluid management interventions, especially for individuals with diverse cultural dietary backgrounds within the haemodialysis population. Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is the foundation of the comprehensive treatment of patients with diabetes. In 2010, the Chinese Clinical Nutritionist Center of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association developed the first Chinese guideline on MNT for patients with diabetes, and it was updated in 2015. Since then, new evidence has emerged in the field of MNT and metabolic therapy in patients with diabetes. The Nutrition and Metabolic Management Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care organized a team of experts from related institutions, including the Clinical Nutrition Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society, Chinese Diabetes Society, Chinese Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and Chinese Clinical Nutritionist Center of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Their task was to develop the Chinese Guidelines of Medical Nutrition Therapy in Diabetes (2022 Edition) in accordance with the requirements of the Guidelines for the Formulation/Revision of Clinical Guidelines in China (2022 Edition) by combining the questions raised and evidence gathered in clinical practices in China, to guide and standardize the clinical MNT. Esophageal carcinoma is one of the most common digestive tract malignancies and poses a serious health threat to patients. This study discussed the influence of stepwise nutrition management and comprehensive nursing on esophageal carcinoma patients, which can shed light on the future clinical treatment of esophageal carcinoma. A total of 107 esophageal carcinoma patients admitted to our hospital between July 2022 and June 2023 were divided into a control group (n = 54) that received conventional care and an experimental group (n = 53) that received stepwise nutrition management along with comprehensive care. The postoperative rehabilitation time and clinical efficacy of the two groups were statistically analyzed, and differences in nutritional status and physical fitness before and after care were determined. The results showed that the experimental group had a faster first postoperative anal exhaust, bowel movement, ambulation, and anastomotic healing time than the control group (P < 0.05). No marked intergroup difference was identified in the overall response rate (P > 0.05). In addition, better nutritional status and physical fitness were observed in the experimental group than in the control group (P < 0.05). The experimental group exhibited a lower incidence of adverse reactions (P < 0.05) than the control group. Background: Managing nutrition in critically ill patients involves many medical fields. However, the nutrition management of critically ill patients has not been comprehensive enough to achieve multidisciplinary team cooperation in China and many other countries. Furthermore, there is no standardized management model or process. Aim: To explore the multidisciplinary cooperative nutrition management model for critically ill patients in the ICUs in China, verify its clinical effect and provide a clinical practice reference for the nutrition management of critically ill patients. Study Design: A multidisciplinary cooperative nutrition management team, including ICU doctors, ICU nurses, clinical nutritionists, clinical pharmacists and radiologists, was established for critically ill patients. According to a literature review and domestic guidelines, the standardized process of nutritional management for critically ill patients was constructed through the Delphi expert consultation method. One hundred thirty‐two patients in the ICU were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group. A routine nutrition management mode, which was the nutrition management plan mainly formulated by the ICU doctor in charge only and the ICU nurses responsible for the implementation and monitoring of nutrition support, was implemented in the control group. And a multidisciplinary nutrition management mode, which was the nutrition management implemented by the multidisciplinary teams with the standardized nutrition management process for critically ill patients, was adopted in the experimental group. The early nutritional support rate, nutritional indexes (serum albumin, preprotein, haemoglobin and hs‐CPR), mechanical ventilation time, ICU hospitalization days and hospitalization expenses of the two groups were compared. Results: The early nutritional support rates of the experimental group and the control group were 89.39% and 69.7%, respectively (χ2 =.002, p =.031). Serum albumin (35.4 vs. 33.1 g/L), preprotein (153.2 vs. 125.9 mg/L) and haemoglobin (97.5 vs. 90.6 g/L) in the experimental group were significantly higher than in the control group (p =.000,.016,.033). The days of hospitalization in the ICU of the experimental group were shorter than in the control group (5.1 vs. 7.1, p =.039). High‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein, the days of mechanical ventilation and ICU hospitalization expenses of the experimental group were lower than in the control group; however, the difference was not statistically significant (p =.713,.068,.489). Conclusions: Because of the severity and complexity of patients' diseases, it is necessary to implement multidisciplinary nutrition management for critically ill patients. Research shows that the multidisciplinary nutrition management standardized process for critically ill patients that was constructed in this study can effectively improve nutritional indexes such as serum albumin, preprotein and haemoglobin, shorten the length of stay in the ICU and promote the rehabilitation of patients, and this process be widely used in the clinic. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Structured multidisciplinary nutrition management operational processes can guide clinical practice. This research attempted to clarify the clinical impact of tiered nursing on the postoperative recovery and nutritional status of general surgery patients receiving nasogastric enteral nutrition support. Eighty patients undergoing surgery requiring nasogastric enteral nutrition support in the Department of General Surgery of Shengjing Hospital, affiliated with China Medical University, from June 2021 to June 2023 were randomly divided into a control group and an experimental group using computer-assisted drawing. Each group consisted of 40 patients. During the nutritional support period, the control group received conventional nursing, whereas the experimental group received tiered nursing care. The incidence of gastrointestinal adverse reactions and serum albumin and prealbumin scores in the experimental group were lower than in the control group. The first postoperative time of exhaustion, defecation, oral intake, and overall length of stay was shorter in the experimental group than in the control group. The 36-Item Short Form Survey scores were higher in the experimental group than in the control group. In summary, tiered nursing intervention for general surgery patients receiving nasogastric enteral nutrition support can maintain postoperative gastrointestinal comfort, shorten gastrointestinal function recovery and overall recovery times, and elevate postoperative quality of life. Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a rare but severe condition associated with high rates of maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality. Timely discontinuation of pregnancy, professional supervision and appropriate management are helpful for a successful discharge. This article reports the presentation and nursing care of a pregnant woman who was diagnosed with AFLP and discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU) after a prolonged hospitalization. The patient was admitted to the ICU on the first day after a caesarean section, with deterioration of liver, kidney and coagulation function. On day 1 of ICU admission, she underwent transnasal high‐flow oxygen therapy. Owing to worsening respiratory status and oxygen saturation <85%, the patient was intubated on day 3 in the ICU. Her urine output decreased significantly, her bilirubin level progressively increased, and she was treated with bilirubin adsorption and haemodialysis. Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome occurred, along with many other complications, including subarachnoid haemorrhage and lower extremity venous thrombosis. The patient was finally extubated on day 7, and haemodialysis was discontinued on day 42, with a daily urine output of approximately 2000 mL. The patient was discharged from the ICU 43 days after admission. Treatment and care activities under qualified nursing care, including managing haemorrhage and anticoagulation in haemodialysis, pain care based on psychological support, early rehabilitation and nutrition and providing appropriate care for respiratory support, contributed to the successful discharge of the patient from the ICU. We have examined the influence of early postoperative nutritional nursing on the prognosis of patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. A total of 82 patients with gastrointestinal surgery were recruited from the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University between January 2020 and December 2022 for this study. The patients were divided into two equalsized control and treatment groups. The control group received routine care, whereas the treatment group received added nutritional care. Compared to the control group, the first exhaust time, first defecation time, and hospitalization time in the treatment group were shorter (P < 0.01). On the 7th day after surgery, no difference was found in the levels of albumin and total protein between the two groups (P > 0.05). However, on the 4th and 7th days after surgery, the diamine oxidase and malondialdehyde values in the treatment group were lower relative to the control group. Body weight in the treatment group was higher, the incidence of complications was lower, and the quality-of-life score and immune function were better compared to the control group (P < 0.05). To sum up, early nutritional care is beneficial to improving the immune function indexes, nutritional indexes, and quality of life of patients after gastrointestinal surgery, as well as reducing the occurrence of postoperative adverse reactions. Chronic low-grade inflammation is the common pathological basis of various diseases, and diet is a key factor in regulating the level of chronic low-grade inflammation. Assessing the potential of individual dietary inflammation can timely understand the impact on the level of chronic low-grade inflammation in the body, and help develop and implement personalized dietary management plans to promote healthy dietary behavior and reduce disease risk. This article reviews the potential evaluation tools for dietary inflammation both domestically and internationally, including their characteristics, main content, current application status, and limitations. It aims to provide reference for the development and rational selection of evaluation tools for dietary inflammation potential in China, and provide scientific basis and theoretical basis for the formulation of dietary prevention and control strategies in China. In recent decades, great progress in the area of enteral nutrition has provided a large variety and commercial availability of enteral formulas, usually produced by the nutrition divisions of several pharmaceutical or dairy manufacturers, with specific compositions for each type of disease or patient condition. Despite the widespread use of enteral formulas, both in hospitals and at home, studies performed on the micronutrient compositions of adult enteral formulas are few in China. The content of micronutrients in 31 commercially available adult enteral formulas in the Chinese market was compared with the Chinese dietary reference intakes (DRIs), the tolerable upper limits (UL), the limit requirements in Food Safety National Standards General Rules of Foods for Special Medical Purposes (GB 29922‐2013), and the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) micronutrient guideline (2022). The micronutrient content was calculated by multiplying the value provided on the nutrition label for each product by the daily energy dose of 1500 and 1800 Kcal/day. The research results showed that most adult enteral formulas were generally suitable for patients on long‐term total enteral nutrition support in the Chinese market, and foods for special medical purpose (FSMP) formulas were more suitable than enteral nutrition preparation (ENP) formulas. However, the vitamin D, vitamin K, and iron content in these formulas should be appropriately increased to the limit recommended by the ESPEN micronutrient guideline. The results could provide a basis for manufacturers to research and develop more suitable enteral formulas and help clinical dietitians administer more effective enteral nutrition support for patients on long‐term total enteral nutrition in clinical practice, especially individualized treatment. Background: This scoping review presents existing research evidence regarding diet therapy in patients with rare diseases (RDs). Methods: Using the five‐stage scoping review framework proposed by Arksey, O'Malley and Levac, we searched the published literature in PubMed, Web of Science, Royal Society of Chemistry, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Database and Wan Fang Database from January 2010 to November 2022. We selected diet therapy studies on 121 RDs, as categorised by the National Health Commission of China in 2018. Charts for research analysis were developed and used to categorise the data. Results: We ultimately included 34 diet therapy studies from 19 countries and territories for 10 RDs and 3 RD groups. RD diet therapy studies have mainly focused on inborn errors of metabolism (92.3%) and are common in Western countries. Most studies focused on diet therapy methods for RDs (44%). In addition, 29% of studies included diet therapy management, 15% included guidelines for diet therapy and 12% included the impact of diet therapy on patients. Conclusions: Current diet therapies for RDs lack specificity and present with limited characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the scope and depth of future research and explore evidence‐based recommendations and new diet therapies focused on patient needs and family support to provide a reference for improving the efficacy and safety of diet therapies for RDs. We have examined the influence of sequential enteral and parenteral nutrition support, assisted by nutritional risk screening, on colorectal cancer patients undergoing radical surgery. This cohort included 100 colorectal cancer patients receiving radical surgery in Zhejiang Quzhou People's Hospital between May 2021 and April 2022. The control group received treatment with early enteral nutrition support only. The experimental group, however, received sequential enteral and parenteral nutrition support, assisted by nutritional risk screening. The indicators of nutrition adequacy, gastrointestinal function, early postoperative complications, and quality of life were compared. The albumin, hemoglobin, and albumin levels presented no difference between the two groups before treatment. After treatment, these indicators in the experimental group were elevated relative to those in the control group. The time of bowel sound recovery, the time of first anal exhaustion, time of first defecation, and the incidence of surgical complications in the experimental group decreased relative to those in the control group. A 36-item short-form health survey showed an elevation in the experimental group relative to the control group. Application of sequential enteral and parenteral nutritional support assisted by nutritional risk screening in colorectal cancer patients has a significant effect, which helps improve postoperative nutritional status, facilitate gastrointestinal function recovery, reduce incidence of complications, and accelerate postoperative recovery. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of an online multidisciplinary weight loss management programme. Methods: Between July 2016 and July 2017 this randomized controlled trial recruited patients in Nanjing, China who were living with type 2 diabetes mellitus and who were obese or overweight and randomized them to online versus conventional groups. All participants were managed by a multidisciplinary team. The experimental group was managed using the Why Wait WeChat Platform for Weight Reduction Management. Results: There were 55 and 52 participants in the online and conventional groups, respectively. The decreases in fasting blood glucose (−4.26 vs. −2.99 mmol/L), 2‐h postprandial blood glucose (−4.48 vs. −2.68 mmol/L) and glycated haemoglobin (−22.11 vs. −6.21 mmol/mol) were more pronounced in the online compared to conventional group (all P < 0.05). After the intervention, self‐management ability parameters, including diet control, foot care and total score, were improved in the online group compared with the conventional group, as well as all indexes of quality of life (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: The online multidisciplinary weight loss management programme improved blood glucose in obese or overweight patients living with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Obesity has become a global "epidemic". At this stage, overweight / obesity has become a major public health problem that seriously affects not only adults but also children and adolescents worldwide. Medical nutritional therapy is the basic treatment for obesity and an indispensable measure for prevention and control at any stage in the course of obesity. Management of co-morbidities and improving the quality of life of obese patients are also included in treatment aims. In recent years, there have been some guidelines on the nutrition management of overweight/obesity. However, the management of nutrition and lifestyle interventions must be compatible with specific regional dietary habits and social culture. To provide a clinical reference for the standardized treatment and management of overweight / obesity, guidelines for medical nutrition treatment of overweight/obesity in China (2021) were published, which cover the relationship of weight loss with different dietary patterns, meal replacement foods, biorhythms, intestinal microecology, metabolic surgery, and medical nutritional intervention, as well as weight loss in special populations. We hope the guidelines will improve the awareness of the importance of nutrition intervention in the treatment of metabolic disease, further regulate the principle and approach of medical nutrition therapy, and establish a workflow of standardized medical nutrition therapy for weight loss management so that more clinical nutrition professionals and medical staff can use it to provide better services for obese people. Background: Weight loss is an important side effect of long-term anticancer treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. The decline in body function will cause many adverse effects, such as local recurrence and distant metastasis, and reduce the patient's quality of life. Therefore, this study developed a predictive model for the probability of critical weight loss to provide timely appropriate nutritional interventions and prevent serious side effects. Methods: A 20-week prospective follow-up study of 137 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients in West China Hospital of Sichuan University undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy from February 2018 to March 2020 was conducted to collect relevant clinical data. The clinical usefulness and calibration of the prediction model were assessed using the C-index, calibration plot, receiver operating curve, and decision curve analysis. Internal validation was assessed using bootstrapping validation. Results: The nomogram consisted of sex, smoking status, physical status, chemotherapy regimen, and body mass index. Good calibration was observed for the cohort, with an area under the curve of 0.924. Five independent prognostic factors were included in the nomogram, which showed a high C-index value of 0.815 in the interval validation. Decision curve analysis showed that the nomogram was clinically useful when the intervention was decided at the critical weight loss possibility threshold in the 0% to 97% range. Conclusions: We constructed and validated a nomogram for predicting the incidence of critical weight loss in nasopharyngeal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Background and Objectives: To investigate the Intensivists' cognizance of nutritional management and its determinants, and to provide evidence for standardizing nutritional therapy with protocols.Methods and Study Design: From April to July 2021, a multi-stage sampling method was used to investigate the nutritional cognizance of critical care physicians in secondary and tertiary hospitals in Guizhou Province, China; Questionnaires and scales were used as survey tools. The questionnaires sought general information about the respondents and documented their nutrition cognizance and practice. Five scalar dimensions explored nutritional management, with answers scored for 1-5 points, 3 points being the pass score.Results: 322 respondents from 147 hospitals were surveyed. The average score was passable, but not good at 3.37±0.71 (p<0.01 with 3.0 as reference). Among the five dimensions, evaluation and monitoring of nutritional status had the highest score (3.79±0.67, p<0.01), the understanding of nutritional preparations had the lowest (3.09±0.86, p>0.05), and the scores of other dimensions ranged from 3.21 to 3.49. Almost 70% of intensivists said that they would give priority to other than nutritional therapeutic measures in actual clinical practice. But 96% thought it necessary to strengthen and emphasise nutritional management.Conclusions: Critical care physicians' knowledge and understanding of nutritional therapy are limited, especially in the use of supportive preparations; Recourse to protocols and standardized nutritional management of assistance may depend on training, assigned role, peer expectations and health system policy, each of which has the potential for advancement in the interest of better nutritional care in provincial Guizhou. BACKGROUND: Studies have found that there is a reduction in the quality of life of patients with osteosarcopenia and an increase in the risk of hospitalization. Compared to patients with osteoporosis or sarcopenia alone, patients with osteosarcopenia have a higher risk of falls and fractures. However, there are few epidemiological reports on osteosarcopenia, with the relationship between bones and muscles being unknown, and few treatment measures have developed. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the interaction between bone and muscle and the prevention and treatment of osteosarcopenia, thereby calling for an early intervention system. METHODS: PubMed and CNKI were searched for relevant articles published from 1996 to 2020 using the keywords of “osteosarcopenia, epidemiology, interaction between skeleton and muscle, intervention, treatment.” A total of 424 articles were initially examined, and 74 articles were finally included for analysis and summary after screening and sorting. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Bone and muscle have similar tissue origin and are differentiated from each other under in vivo or in vitro factors. The adjacent anatomical relationship provides the basic conditions for mechanical signals and chemical signals. The interaction between bone and muscle is mainly realized through mechanical stimulation and its secreted bioactive factors. Like most diseases, the prevention of osteosarcopenia is more important than its treatment. Bone and muscle mass peaks at a young age and then begins to decline with age. The complex and multifactorial characteristics of osteosarcopenia require multifaceted prevention and treatment strategies. The main prevention and treatment measures include: resistance training, nutrition diet therapy, drug therapy, etc. Currently, no enough attention has been paid to osteosarcopenia in China. By drawing on the quasi-natural experiment of the Nutrition Improvement Program (NIP) and adopting the Difference-in-Differences (DID) method, we sought to determine the causal relationship between school nutritious feeding and the cognitive ability (CA) development among poor students in China. Specifically, our estimates confirmed that NIP implementations significantly improved the CAs of students in poverty, which is supported by several robustness checks. Moreover, the potential mechanisms of this positive effect included improved health status, enhanced sense of belonging at school, and increased positive expectations for the future. Every-other-day fasting is effective for a variety of major human diseases, but the safety of these interventions is uncertain for patients with spinal cord injury. A randomized controlled study was conducted to investigate the safety of every-other-day fasting in patients with spinal cord injury. Participants who met the diagnostic inclusion and exclusion criteria were randomly divided into the control and every-other-day fasting groups. In the every-other-day fasting group, fasting lasted from 09:00 P.M. on day 1 to 06:00 P.M. on the following day (day 2). Dinner on day 2 was restricted to approximately 30% of the average daily calorie intake. The changes in plasma glucose were recorded daily for 2 days and every other day from the third day after every-other-day fasting intervention. The changes in albumin, prealbumin, plasma potassium, serum sodium, blood calcium, body weight, and body mass index were monitored at the baseline and at the end of the every-other-day fasting intervention. The results showed that compared with the control group, the mean blood glucose levels were significantly decreased from the second week after every-other-day fasting intervention. The body weight of patients in the every-other-day fasting group was notably reduced compared with that at baseline, whereas in body mass index, no obvious differences were observed before and after treatment with every-other-day fasting. Objectives: The aim of this implementation project was to improve nutritional screening and nutritional interventions for patients scheduled for gastrointestinal surgery in a general surgical ward. Introduction: Malnutrition is common in hospitalized surgical patients and has many adverse outcomes affecting the patients' quality of life. Improving nutritional risk screening and nutritional support could reduce the incidence of malnutrition and its adverse outcomes. Methods: The project used the JBI audit and feedback method to implement evidence into practice. JBI Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System and Getting Research into Practice audit tools were used for promoting change in general surgical wards. Six audit criteria were created based on an evidence summary, including using screening tool, patients' and caregivers' education, nurses' education on nutritional screening and support, preoperative nutrition support and postoperative early food intake. A baseline audit was conducted, followed by nursing information system improvement, education, multidisciplinary meetings targeted at clinicians and two cycles of follow-up audits. Results: Results from the baseline and follow-up audits showed improvement for all the criteria. Compliance for criteria 1-3 increased from 0 to 100%, and that for criterion 4 increased from 32 to 100%. These four criteria sustained 100% in follow-up cycle 2. Compliance for criterion 5 increased from 8 to 50% in follow-up cycle 1 audit, but decreased to 0% in follow-up cycle 2 audit, and similarly for criterion 6, compliance increased from 45 to 56% in follow-up cycle 1 audit, but decreased to 48% in follow-up cycle 2 audit. Conclusion: The objectives related to nutritional risk screening, nurse knowledge, patients and families were successfully realized and sustained positive results. This project demonstrated that a nursing information system and long-term patient education are essential strategies to achieve and sustain positive results. The objectives related to preoperative nutritional support and postoperative early enteral food intake were challenges and represented barriers. Background: Oral mucositis is a common complication after radiotherapy or chemotherapy in cancer patients. Oral mucositis can affect the patient's food intake and their confidence in treatment as patients are more likely to suffer severe pain, experience weight loss, encounter an interruption or change of cancer treatment plan, and are reported to have a reduced survival from the disease. Nutritional intervention is the primary nursing focus in patients with oral mucositis treated by chemoradiotherapy. Objectives: The current best practice implementation project aimed to establish best practice principles in nutritional interventions for patients with cancer treatment-related oral mucositis. Methods: This was an evidence-based audit and feedback project that used a three-phase approach at a public hospital in China. Phase 1 involved developing five evidence-based audit criteria informed by current best available evidence, and undertaking a clinical audit of current practice on 50 patients in the Department of Radiation Oncology of Nanfang Hospital using the JBI's Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System. Phase 2 utilized the Getting Research into Practice component of the Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System to identify barriers to compliance with best practice principles and developed strategies and resources to improve compliance. Phase 3 involved conducting a postaudit using the same sample size and audit criteria to re-evaluate compliance with best practice. Results: Baseline results showed that compliance rates were 0% for criteria 1 and 2, 76% for criteria 3 and 5, and 82% for criterion 4. The implementation of strategies, including establishing a multidisciplinary team with a dietitian, creating training and education programs for all staff and patients, utilizing a scale regarding diet to assess patients' current diet, and establishing a nutrition intervention nursing procedure to supervise implementation of the nutritional intervention for patients with cancer treatment-related oral mucositis, increased compliance with best practice, achieving compliance rates of at least 82% for all five audit criteria. Conclusion: The implementation of context-specific strategies improved compliance with evidence-based practice in the nutritional intervention for patients with cancer treatment-related oral mucositis. Sustainability of best practice is important, with further audits planned to evaluate the sustainability of these practice changes. Purpose: The burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) has increased in China. However, the contribution of dietary risks to the NCD burden has not been evaluated. This study aimed to estimate the burden of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and colorectal cancer (CRC) attributable to a diet low in fiber in China from 1990 to 2017. Methods: China data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2017 were used to assess the age-, sex-, and province-specific mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of IHD and CRC related to a diet low in fiber. Results: In 2017, a diet low in fiber contributed 170,143 [95% uncertainty interval (UI): 99,623–256,806] IHD deaths and 25,561 (95% UI: 13,726–39,215) CRC deaths, with the population attributable fractions (PAFs) were 9.7 and 13.7%, respectively. Males had higher risk-attributable mortality and DALY rates for IHD and CRC than females. An upward trend with age in rates of mortality and DALY was observed. All-age risk-attributable mortality and DALY rates increased significantly by 111.4 and 53.2% for IHD, and 94.4 and 59.6% for CRC from 1990 to 2017, respectively; however, the corresponding age-standardized rates for IHD and CRC showed relatively stable trends. Heilongjiang, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia were ranked as the top three provinces in terms of total risk-attributable NCD burden in 2017. Conclusions: China has a large and growing NCD burden attributable to a diet low in fiber. Background: Enteral nutrition is commonly used in patients with gastric cancer after a partial or full gastrectomy since it is safe to use and nutrient delivery is in line with human physiological characteristics. However, enteral feeding often leads to deficiency, when the actual intake of the patient is lower than the target demand, which seriously affects the recovery of patients. Objective: To implement the best practice for preventing and managing underfeeding during enteral nutrition, and to improve the nutritional status of patients with gastric cancer. Methods: The current study was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System program. Phase one referred to the development of the project, consisting of the generation of the best evidence, mainly based on literature review and discussions within a panel of experts. Phase two was the implementation of the project, including baseline audit, training of enteral nutrition and change of clinical practice. Phase three was a postimplementation reaudit. The intake of enteral nutrition was observed in the first 3 days, and feeding intolerance of enteral nutrition was observed within the first week of enteral nutrition. Data were collected using self-designed questionnaires. The nutritional status of patients was measured using Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) at admission, and 1 week after surgery. Results: A total of 60 patients with gastric cancer and 10 registered nurses were enrolled in this study. The compliance rate for all audit criteria increased postimplementation. The feeding rate of enteral nutrition postimplementation was higher than the baseline audit on the third day, 54.29%(±12.01) vs. 42.89%(±10.63), and the incidence of underfeeding was lower (30%, n=30) than the baseline audit (76.67%, n=30). Furthermore, the feeding intolerance postimplementation (26.67%, n=30)was lower than the baseline audit (76.67%, n=30) within 1 week of enteral nutrition. The PGSGA scoreswere not significantly different between the baseline audit and postimplementation on the day of admission, while the scores were lower postimplementation (12.90±1.47) compared with the baseline audit (14.00±1.82). Conclusion: In this study, we performed an audit of the clinical nursing quality, which can guide nurses to accurately identify obstacles to the implementation of enteral nutrition, and standardize the implementation and management process, thereby improving the quality of nursing and the nutritional status of patients. Managing chronic diseases is an important issue for older adults to pursue healthy aging. Prior studies have found that self-management has positive results. A better understanding of the self-management behaviours of older adults with chronic diseases and different activities of daily living abilities will lead to effective support and assistance. This qualitative study used interview data from Chinese older adults with chronic diseases to compare self-management behaviours between different activities of daily living groups. A self-management behavioural model was constructed that included three behaviours: self-monitoring, self-evaluating and self-intervening. The similarities and differences in these behaviours between three types of older adults (i.e. energetic, self-care and semi self-care) were identified. Study findings enrich the research on self-management behaviour from a patient perspective, providing insights for older adults and care providers in understanding and supporting chronic disease self-management. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) prevalence, related challenges, and culturally acceptable treatments in China are described. Overweight, obesity, T2DM, and the aged population are all increasing, and more attention to T2DM patients is needed. Next steps include improved screening, case finding, and follow-up. Background and Objectives: This study aimed to describe and analyze the research outputs on enteral nutrition, which is the administration of food through the gastrointestinal tract for nutrition maintenance.Methods and Study Design: We searched the Web of Science Core Collection database for original publications on enteral nutrition research from 2010 to 2019. HistCite and VOSviewer software were used for analysis and visualization of the publication outputs, journals, institutions, keywords, cocitations, and collaborations among authors in different countries or regions.Results: A total of 963 relevant articles were included. The number of publications in 2010 and 2019 were 68 and 139, respectively. Nutrition in Clinical Practice and the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition had the highest number of publications and cocitations (76, 7.89%; 2058), respectively. The United States and China were the top contributors, accounting for 24.1% and 22.3% of the total articles, respectively. Andrew S. Day and Stephen A. McClave were core researchers in this field. Primary authors collaborated closely. Enteral nutrition, parenteral nutrition, and support were the three most common keywords. The top 10 cocited references concerned administering early enteral nutrition therapy in acutely ill patients and patients with acute Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease, acute pancreatitis, upper gastrointestinal malignancy, and other surgical diseases were among the research hotspots.Conclusions: Our findings can help researchers identify notable research trends and clinically relevant articles. Purpose: The consequences of malnutrition include increased risk of many complications. The assessment and management of nutritional problems are essential in supportive care of patients undergoing therapy. The primary objective of the present study was to assess changes in the nutritional status in lung cancer patients who had undergone chemotherapy. Patients and methods: Preliminary and post-chemotherapy assessments of patients' nutritional status and medical characteristics were conducted using the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) from July 2014 to May 2016 at Harbin Medical University Cancer Hospital. Four hundred sixty-five advanced lung cancer patients (51.8% men and 48.2% women with a mean (SD) age of 60.2 ± 9.8 years) participated in the present study. PG-SGA was assessed prior to the initiation of chemotherapy and after four cycles of chemotherapy. Results: We found that 11.4% of the patients were severely malnourished and 65.6% of the patients were moderately malnourished prior to chemotherapy. After chemotherapy, 52.9% of the patients were considered moderately malnourished, whereas 33.8% were severely malnourished. The nutritional status had deteriorated in the majority of patients. After chemotherapy, there was a rise in the prevalence of nutrition impact symptoms. Conclusions: A deteriorated nutritional status was the result of the side effects caused by chemotherapy in the patients of the present study. These findings highlight that more attention should be paid to improve the nutritional status in patients with advanced lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy, and proper nutrition education and nutritional support should be provided to these patients. Introduction: Introduction: in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients nutritional requirements are increased. These patients present symptoms that make food intake and nutrient absorption difficult, therefore involving nutritional risk. On the other hand, acute respiratory complications require prolonged ICU stays, and this predisposes to increased malnutrition and loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, which can lead to poor quality of life, disability and morbidity long after discharge. For this reason, the world's leading nutrition societies and associations believe that nutritional therapy should be considered a part of the basic treatment of patients with COVID-19. Methods: we have reviewed and compared 9 expert recommendations (ER) published by nutrition societies and associations from China, Spain, Brazil, Europe, Colombia, Australia, America, and the United Kingdom, in relation to critical and non-critical hospitalized patients due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: the 9 ERs reviewed agree on the importance of nutritional management in critical and non-critical hospitalized patients with COVID-19, as well as on the early detection of nutritional risk, the intervention, and subsequent follow-up. Background and Objectives: The optimal energy intake for early nutrition therapy in critically ill patients is unknown, especially in Chinese patients with a lower BMI. This study investigated the relationship between energy intake and clinical outcomes in this patient population.Methods and Study Design: A retrospective study was carried out at a tertiary hospital. Critically ill patients were recruited and divided into 3 tertiles according to the ratio of actual/target energy intake during the first week of hospitalization in the intensive care unit (ICU) (tertile I, <33.4%; tertile II, 33.4%-66.7%; and tertile III, >66.7%). 60-day mortality and other clinical outcomes were compared. To adjust for potentially confounding factors, multivariate and sensitivity analyses were performed exclusively in patients who stayed in the ICU for ≥7 days.Results: A total of 325 patients with a mean BMI of 22.5±4.7 kg/m2 were recruited. 60-day mortality was similar between the 3 tertiles. In the unadjusted analysis, tertile III had a longer length of stay in the ICU and at the hospital, longer duration of mechanical ventilation, and higher rate of ICU-associated infections, but only the latter showed a significant difference between the 3 tertiles in the multivariate and sensitivity analyses. Logistic regression analysis showed that energy groups was an independent risk factor for ICU-associated infections.Conclusions: Energy intake in early nutrition therapy influences risk of ICU-associated infections in Chinese critically ill patients with lower BMI. Aims: To explore whether educational information delivered via a medical smartphone app in conjunction with verbal and written instructions, compared with traditional booklet‐based and verbal instructions, could improve the quality of bowel preparation for hospitalized patients undergoing colonoscopy. Design: A prospective, single‐blinded, randomized controlled trial. Methods: We performed a prospective, endoscopist‐blinded, randomized, controlled trial at Qilu Hospital of Shandong University in China between October 2017–March 2018. Inpatients who are eligible, based on the inclusion criteria, were randomized into two groups. Both groups received oral and written instructions for bowel preparation. In addition, the smartphone app group received instructions through a medical smartphone app. The primary outcome was the rate of adequate bowel preparation according to the Boston bowel preparation scale score. The secondary outcomes included patient compliance with instructions on how to take laxatives, side effects and rates of adenoma detection. Results: A total of 293 patients were enrolled in this study. Demographic characteristics were comparable between the two groups. The χ2 test showed that the medical smartphone app group showed significant improvement in the rate of adequate bowel preparation compared with the control group (77.2% vs. 56.8%, p <.001). The adenoma detection rate (ADR) was significantly higher in the smartphone app group than in the control group (21.4% vs. 12.8%, p =.029) based on the χ2 test. The rates of incomplete compliance with instructions were 15.17% in the smartphone app group and 33.11% in the control group (p <.001) based on the χ2 test. The overall adverse events were 23.45% and 37.84% in the smartphone app and control groups, respectively (p =.008), based on the χ2 test. Conclusion: Instructions provided via a mobile social media app in conjunction with traditional verbal and written methods could improve the quality of bowel preparation, increase the ADR and decrease adverse effects. App instructions could be an effective addition to oral and written instructions for inpatients undergoing colonoscopy. Impact: This study suggested that clinical personnel could deliver information via smartphone as a powerful addition to traditional educational methods that could improve work efficiency and help patients increase the success rate of bowel preparation. Background and Objectives: To provide a questionnaire, with Shanghai medical interns as respondents, analyzing knowledge (K), attitude (A), and practice (P) in relation to clinical nutrition, and to explore factors that could affect KAP scores.Methods and Study Design: The cross- sectional study used 330 interns from Shanghai medical universities responding to general material data questionnaires and KAP questionnaires on clinical nutrition.Results: The mean KAP score was 210.26±25.9 (X±SD), and the score for each part of the KAP questionnaire was just within the threshold for qualified. Multivariate analysis showed that the factors influencing the proportion of excellent scores for K were preventive medicine major (OR=3.45, p<0.001), senior intern (OR=2.52, p=0.002), and tertiary intern hospital (OR=2.31, p=0.006). The only factor influencing the proportion of excellent scores for P was accessing nutritional information one to three times per week (OR=3.95, p=0.011). Nutrition course had no relation to any scores of K, A, P.Conclusions: The mean scores of overall KAP and the individual K, A, P were all categorized as qualified. The P score was the lowest and only influenced by how frequently information was accessed. In summary, nutrition knowledge and regular practical training gained from intern hospital could be a better way to enable senior interns to quickly and competently address patient nutrition problems at the commencement of their careers. Background and Objectives: The participation of a nutrition support pharmacist (NSP) in a multidisciplinary team (MDT) for patients receiving nutrition support therapy (NST) may lead to more favourable outcomes and fewer complications and adverse events. However, few studies have demonstrated the role of NSPs in MDTs in China. To investigate pharmacy interventions and physician acceptance of these interventions for patients receiving NST in an intensive care unit (ICU).Methods and Study Design: A prospective study over a 12-month period was conducted in an ICU at an academic hospital in China. Interventions were documented and divided into the following categories: indication of NST, parenteral nutrition (PN) prescription and delivery, enteral nutrition (EN) route and formulation, fluids and electrolytes, laboratory test monitoring, nutritional supplements, and other medication-related problems. Data regarding the intervention categories, timing, acceptance rates, and methods of communication to discuss pharmacy interventions were collected.Results: In total, 247 interventions for 120 patients were identified. The overall acceptance rate of interventions was 85.0% (210/247), and more than half of the interventions (143, 57.9%) were performed during daily follow-up. The most common intervention categories were PN prescription and delivery (81/247, 32.8%), EN route and formula (33/247, 13.4%), indication of NST (33/247, 13.4%), and nutritional supplements (30/247, 12.1%). The most accepted intervention category was PN prescription and delivery (79/81, 97.5%), and the most common method of communication was oral communication during MDT rounds (201/247, 81.4%).Conclusions: This study demonstrated the unique perspectives offered and importance of having pharmacists as members of MDTs. This retrospective study investigated the efficiency of nutritional support in unresectable locally advanced oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (LAOSCC) patients who received concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) based on 5‐fluorouracil and cisplatin. In the routine care group, 63 patients served as historical controls and received nutrition support in a reactive manner. In addition, 57 patients in the nutritional support group received timely diet counselling, oral nutritional supplements, enteral nutrition and/or parenteral nutrition during CCRT. This support was based on scores from nutritional risk screening 2002 (NRS‐2002) after June 2014. The nutritional support group had significant advantages over the routine care group with respect to the incidence of neutropenia, the objective response rate, the change in serum albumin and the lengths of hospital stay. In addition, the nutritional support group had significantly higher levels of IgG and IL‐2, higher proportions of NK, CD3+ and CD4+ cells as well as a higher ratio of CD4+/CD8+ cells than the routine care group (p < .05). In contrast, the nutritional support group had a significantly lower level of IL‐6. In conclusion, the current nutritional care programme could bring benefits of improving treatment compliance, reducing toxicity and lengths of hospital stay and enhancing the immune response. Aims and objectives:To explore the role of culture in the seasonal influenza prevention practices of Hong Kong Chinese parents with a healthy preschool child. Background:Cultural values and norms significantly influence parents’ health preventive practices and related health promotion strategies. Most research is concerned with influenza prevention and focuses on the factors affecting vaccination uptake, the use of facemasks and effective hand hygiene. There is limited research exploring the influence of culture on the seasonal influenza prevention practices of parents with a young child in Hong Kong. Design:Mixed methods using a multiple-case study approach. Methods:Purposive intensity sampling was employed to recruit 20 parents with children under five years old. A thematic analysis was employed to examine the qualitative interview data and the quantitative data were analysed descriptively. The data were then integrated to provide a more rigorous comprehension of parents’ cultural seasonal influenza preventive practices. Comparisons were conducted across the 20 cases and patterns examined. Results:Five themes were identified. They were sharing beds; boiling white vinegar to kill air-born germs; diet therapy to enhance health; self-prescribed Chinese medication to manage a child’s cold symptoms; and the co-use of Western and traditional Chinese medications to prevent seasonal influenza. Conclusions:The findings indicate that a pluralistic approach to health promotion should be considered to ensure the likelihood that families accept, support and comply with health advice in seasonal influenza prevention. Background The aim of the present study was to investigate knowledge, attitude, and practice ( KAP) associated with medical nutrition therapy ( MNT) among Chinese adult patients with diabetes and prediabetes. Methods From May to August 2014, a cross-sectional study was conducted in 40 hospitals across China. The KAP of respondents was investigated through a pretested structured questionnaire in face-to-face interviews. Anthropometric and biochemical data were collected, and KAP scores were recorded according to patient responses. Results In all, responses from 7017 of 7508 patients were analyzed. The mean (± SD) overall KAP score was 9.63 ± 3.46, with individual scores for the K, A, and P components being 2.69 ± 1.90, 1.77 ± 1.99, and 5.17 ± 1.99, respectively (out of possible total scores of 19, 6, 3, and 10, respectively). All scores were higher in respondents who received ≥15 min MNT education than in those with shorter sessions. Patients with higher KAP scores exhibited significantly better glycemic control, with a higher proportion achieving target HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose, and 2-h postprandial blood glucose levels ( P < 0.05). ' Health publicity in hospitals' and 'expert outpatient services' were the most favorable means of acquiring MNT information. The two predominant concerns associated with MNT were 'the feasibility' and 'the authenticity and professionalism of the information'. Conclusions Patients with diabetes and prediabetes achieved moderate scores for KAP towards MNT. Glycemic control was positively correlated with the KAP score. To investigate the knowledge-attitude-practice (KAP) score in diabetes patients living in urban China regarding Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and explore the influencing factors, this national survey recruited diabetes and prediabetes patients in 40 hospitals across 26 provinces in China. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect the data and assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding MNT. Logistic regression was used to explore the factor influencing KAP scores. A total of 6441 diabetes patients (mean age: 60.02±13.14 years) completed this survey. The mean glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level was 8.12±2.12%, and the control rate of HbA1c (HbA1c < 7.0%) was 38.92%. Of the total, 53.56% had received MNT education. Over half of the patients had a poor total KAP score as well as poor K, A, and P scores. Patients with higher KAP scores had higher control rate of HbA1c (P<0.05) but lower levels of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and 2-hour postprandial blood glucose (2h-PG). Gender, occupation, residence, education level, and MNT education could influence the KAP scores (P<0.05). This study showed that diabetes patients in urban China generally had poor understandings and practices related to MNT. Patients with higher KAP scores exhibited better control of blood glucose. Aims and objectives To explore the cultural factors related to dietary and fluid restriction behaviours among older Chinese patients. Background Excess dietary sodium and fluid intake are risk factors contributing to the worsening and rehospitalisation for heart failure in older patients. Managing the complex fluid and diet requirements of heart failure patients is challenging and is made more complicated by cultural variations in self-management behaviours in response to a health threat. Design Qualitative study using semi-structured in interviews and framework analysis. Methods The design of this study is qualitative descriptive. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 heart failure patients. Data were analysed through content analysis. Results Seven cultural themes emerged from the qualitative data: the values placed on health and illness, customary way of life, preference for folk care and the Chinese healthcare system, and factors related to kinship and social ties, religion, economics and education. Conclusions Dietary change and management in response to illness, including heart failure, is closely related to individuals' cultural background. Healthcare providers should have a good understanding of cultural aspects that can influence patients' conformity to medical recommendations. Relevance to clinical practice Heart failure patients need support that considers their cultural needs. Background and Objectives: With the development of enteral nutrition in patients with neurological disorders in China, related guidelines were published in 2011. The Chinese Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition conducted a survey to evaluate the status quo of enteral nutrition practices in these patients.Methods and Study Design: This multicenter prospective investigation was conducted from April 2012 to April 2013 and involved 18 tertiary hospitals in China. The survey using standardized questionnaires sought information about the basic protocols for enteral nutrition (devices and staffing) and specific information about patients with neurological conditions who received nutrition by way of enteral feeding.Results: In the 18 hospitals from 13 provinces, 83.3% patients were configured with an enteral nutrition infusion pump, 77.8% had a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) device, and 88.9% had a clinical nutrition support group. Four hundred four patients participated in this survey (259 men, 145 women; mean age 61.3±14.7 years), 85.7% had suffered a stroke, 83.9% had impaired consciousness, and 98.0% had dysphagia. Of the 10 guidelines for enteral nutrition practices, setting the energy target, choosing the enteral nutrition tube, and monitoring the patient received unsatisfactory ratings were in poor compliance (56.2%, 30.0% and 38.9%, respectively); the remaining seven guidelines were in good compliance (each >75%).Conclusion: The survey suggested that configuration of the enteral nutritional devices and staffing was adequate in China's tertiary hospitals. Objective: To investigate the impact of nutritional support on clinical outcomes in patients at nutritional risk who receive nutritional support that meets guideline standards and those who do not.Methods: This prospective cohort study enrolled hospitalized patients from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University from February 2010 to June 2012. The research protocols were approved by the university's ethics committee, and the patients signed informed consent forms. The clinical data were collected based on nutritional risk screening, administration of enteral and parenteral nutrition, surgical information, complications, and length of hospital stay.Results: During the study period, 525 patients at nutritional risk were enrolled in the cohorts. Among patients who received nutritional support that met the guideline standards (Cohort 1), the incidence of infectious complications was lower than that in patients who did not meet guideline standards (Cohort 2) (17.1 % vs. 26.9 %, P = 0.01). Subgroup analysis showed that individuals who received a combination of parenteral nutrition (PN) and enteral nutrition (EN) for 7 or more days had a significantly lower incidence of infectious complications (P = 0.001) than those who received only PN for 7 or more days or those who received nutritional support for less than 7 days or at less than 10 kcal/kg/d. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that, after adjusting for confounding factors, nutritional support that met guideline standards for patients with nutritional risk was a protective factor for complications (OR: 0.870, P < 0.002).Conclusions: In patients at nutritional risk after abdominal surgery, nutritional support that meets recommended nutrient guidelines (especially regimens involving PN + EN ≥ 7 days) might decrease the incidence of infectious complications and is worth recommending; however, well-designed trials are needed to confirm our findings. The evolution of nutritional status (the prevalence of nutritional risk, malnutrition, overweight and obesity) and the nutritional support of the hospitalized patients from admission to discharge or over a two-week period in orthopedics/ spinal surgery of a teaching hospital in Hohhot were investigated. 432 patients from two wards of the orthopedics/spinal surgery from Jan to Dec 2013, the traditional spinal surgery and the minimally invasive spinal surgery, were selected and detected in this study. The Nutritional Risk Score 2002 (NRS 2002) was used to determine the patients' nutritional status within 48 h after admission and during their hospitalization. The overall prevalence of nutritional risk, malnutrition, overweight and obesity at admission was 11.6%, 12.7%, 35.9% and 7.41%, respectively. Overall, there were 88.0% of the patients who were at nutritional risk received nutritional support, while 14.1% of non-risk patients received a redundant nutritional support. The overall prevalence of nutritional risk changed from 11.6% at admission to 19.4% upon discharge (p<0.05), and the prevalence of malnutrition changed from 12.7% to 20.6% (p<0.05). The prevalence of overweight and obesity, which changed from 35.9% to 31.0% and from 7.41% to 5.79% respectively, didn't experience statistically significant evolution. NRS 2002 was a feasible nutritional risk screening tool for patients in spinal surgery of orthopedics department. Patients' prevalence of nutritional risk and malnutrition increased significantly in spinal surgery of this hospital. Some inappropriate uses of nutritional support were observed in orthopedics/spinal surgery, and nutritional support guidelines or protocols should be promoted by a professional committee. Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of a maternal low-protein diet on transcriptional regulation of the myostatin (MSTN) gene in skeletal muscle of weaning piglets. Methods: Sows were fed either a standard-protein (SP, 15 and 18 % crude protein) or a low-protein (LP, 50 % protein level of SP) diet throughout pregnancy and lactation. Longissimus dorsi muscle was sampled from male piglets at 28 days of age. The mRNA was determined by RT-PCR, and protein was measured by Western blot. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assay was used to determine the binding of transcription factors and histone H3 modifications on the MSTN gene promoter. Results: The maternal LP diet significantly decreased body weight and average daily gain ( P < 0.05), which was associated with significantly lower plasma concentration of urea nitrogen and total protein ( P < 0.05), as well as decreased muscle RNA content ( P < 0.05). MSTN mRNA ( P < 0.05) was significantly increased, together with enhanced ( P < 0.05) mRNA and protein expression of forkhead box class O family member protein 3 (FoxO3), and a tendency of an increase ( P = 0.10) in glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mRNA in the muscle of LP piglets. Furthermore, the binding of both FoxO3 and GR to the MSTN gene promoter was significantly higher ( P < 0.05) in muscle of LP piglets, together with significantly enriched ( P < 0.05) gene activation markers, H3K9Ac and H3K4me3. Conclusion: These results indicate that MSTN mediates maternal LP diet-induced growth retardation, through epigenetic regulation involving FoxO3 and GR binding to its promoter. Purpose: We tested the hypothesis that maternal low-protein (LP) diet during gestation and lactation can program myostatin (MSTN) signaling and protein synthesis in skeletal muscle of offspring at weaning stage (35 days). Methods: Fourteen Meishan sows were fed either LP or standard-protein diets throughout gestation and lactation, male offspring piglets were killed at weaning stage and longissimus dorsi (LD) muscles were taken. The cross-sectional areas (CSA) of LD muscles were measured by hematoxylin and eosin staining. The levels of free amino acids in plasma were measured by amino acid auto-analyzer. Proteins and mRNA were determined by Western blot and RT-qPCR, respectively. Results: Body weight, LD muscle weight and the myofiber CSA were significantly decreased ( P < 0.05) in LP piglets; meanwhile, the concentration of branched-chain amino acids was also significantly decreased ( P < 0.001). MSTN protein content tended to be higher ( P = 0.098) in LP piglets, while the expression of MSTN receptors, activin type II receptor-beta and transforming growth factor type-beta type I receptor kinase, was significantly up-regulated ( P < 0.05). Furthermore, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, the downstream signaling factor of MSTN, was also enhanced significantly ( P < 0.05). In addition, key factors of translation initiation, phosphorylated eukaryotic initiation factor 4E and the 70 kDa ribosomal protein S6 kinase, were significantly decreased ( P < 0.05) in LP piglets. Conclusions: Our results suggest that maternal LP diet during gestation and lactation affects MSTN signaling and protein synthesis in skeletal muscle of offspring at weaning stage. Objectives: Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) are of nutritional interest for their unique properties on ingestion, absorption and metabolism. However, dietary and enteral MCTs usage in hospitalized patients in China requires evaluation.Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 46 hospitalized patients who were administered MCTs therapy between January, 2012 and December, 2013 in Peking Union Medical College Hospital. The clinical parameters of subjects were evaluated 2 weeks after intervention. All indications and outcomes of MCTs therapy underwent evidence-based evaluation. A survey was conducted on a random sample of 77 doctors to clarify the awareness and knowledge of MCTs therapy among clinicians.Results: Among 46 cases undergoing MCTs therapy, there were 21 with gastrointestinal dysfunction (with improvement in 15 cases), 15 with lymphatic anomalies (with improvement in 7 cases), 5 with dyslipidemia (with improvement in 3 cases), 4 with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (with improvement in 2 cases) and 1 with epilepsy (without improvement). All indications were evidence -based. Although MCTs were being utilized in an increasing number of patients, the survey revealed poor knowledge of their physicochemical properties, medical indications and the therapeutic basis of their use among clinicians.Conclusions: MCTs therapy is of benefit in the management of gastrointestinal malabsorption, pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, intestinal lymphangiectasia and dyslipidemia. However, randomized controlled trials with adequate sample size and longer follow-up are required to evaluate further their efficacy, and more educational programs are needed to ensure clinical competence for MCT therapy. Nutrition therapy is essential for the management of critically ill patients. Some guidelines have been published to standardize and optimize the nutrition therapy. However, there are still many controversies in nutrition practice and there is a gap between guidelines and clinical nutrition therapy for patients in intensive care units (ICUs). This study aimed to assess attitudes and beliefs toward nutrition therapy of Chinese intensive care physicians by using the American guidelines as a surrogate. A questionnaire was sent to 45 adult ICUs in China, in which surveyed physicians were asked to rate their attitudes toward the American guidelines. A total of 162 physicians from 45 ICUs returned the questionnaires. Physicians were categorized into groups according to their professional seniority, hospital levels and whether they were members of Chinese Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (CSPEN). Overall, 94% of the respondents thought that nutrition therapy for critically ill patients was very important, and 80% mentioned that they used the American guidelines. There was diversity of opinion on the recommendations pertaining to nutrition assessment, supplemental parenteral nutrition and cutoff values for gastric residual volume, negative or neutral attitudes about these recommendations were 43%, 59% and 41%, respectively. Members of CSPEN were more likely to select a greater strength of recommendation than non-members. In conclusion, the overall attitudes of Chinese intensive care physicians toward the American guidelines were positive. Background/Objectives: Few studies have applied the Chinese Diet Balance Index (DBI) in evaluating dietary quality for Chinese people. The present cross-sectional study assessed dietary quality based on DBI for older people, and the associated factors, in four socioeconomically distinct regions in China. Methods: The China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) involves 2745 older Chinese people, aged 60 or over, from four regions (Northeast, East Coast, Central and West) in 2009. Dietary data were obtained by interviews using 24 hour-recall over three consecutive days. Four indicators: Total Score (TS), Lower Bound Score (LBS), Higher Bound Score (HBS) and Diet Quality Distance (DQD) from DBI were calculated for assessing dietary quality in different aspects. Results: 68.9% of older people had different levels of excessive cereals intake. More than 50% of older people had moderate or severe surplus of oil (64.9%) and salt (58.6%). Intake of vegetables and fruit, milk and soybeans, water, and dietary variety were insufficient, especially for milk and soybeans. 80.8% of people had moderate or severe unbalanced diet consumption. The largest differences of DQD scores have been found for people with different education levels and urbanicity levels. People with higher education levels have lower DQD scores (p<0.001), and people living in medium and low urbanicity areas had 2.8 and 8.9 higher DQD scores than their high urbanicity counterparts (p<0.001). Also, significant differences of DQD scores have been found according to gender, marital status, work status and regions (p<0.001). Conclusion: DBI can reveal problems of dietary quality for older Chinese people. Rectifying unbalanced diet intake may lead to prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Dieticians and health care professionals need to increase dissemination and uptake of nutrition education, with interventions targeted at regions of lower socioeconomic status. Background: Improving the level of self-management by people undergoing hemodialysis is an effective way to reduce the incidence of mortality and complications and improve quality of life. A better understanding of what influences an individual's level of selfmanagement can help nurses find appropriate ways to improve self-management. Objectives: To examine self-management levels, and discuss the factors influencing self- management, in a sample of patients undergoing hemodialysis in Beijing. Design: A descriptive study design was chosen. Settings and methods: A convenience sample of 216 patients undergoing hemodialysis was recruited from dialysis centers in three tertiary hospitals in Beijing from September 2010 to January 2011. Questionnaires were used to examine the variables: level of selfmanagement; knowledge of hemodialysis; self-efficacy; anxiety and depression; and social support. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviations, while Spearman correlation, non-parametric Z and x² and multiple linear regression were used for comparative purposes. Results: The number of returned questionnaires was 198 (91.67% response rate). The overall score of self-management was 56.01 (SD = 10.75). The average item scores for each of the four self-management subscales were 3.02 for partnership, 2.98 for problem-solving skills, 2.74 for self-care and 2.47 for emotional management. Multiple linear regression analyses for overall self-management and the four subscales indicated that knowledge, self-efficacy, the availability of social support and depression were the main influencing factors which explained 34.1% of the variance of self-management. Conclusion: The level of self-management by those undergoing hemodialysis in this study was less than ideal, varying from 'rare' to 'sometimes' for use of self-management behaviors. For the different subscales of self-management, partnership was the most used and emotional management the least used strategy. Background: The two-gram salt-restriction-spoons, which can be used to reduce the salt intake of people, had been handed out for free by the Chinese government to the citizens several years ago, but only a small fraction of residents use such a spoon currently. Since no studies have been conducted to investigate relevant influencing factors, this study was designed to explore the determinants of salt-restriction-spoon using behavior (SRB) in China. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Beijing, China. Altogether 269 rural residents and 244 urban residents aged over 18 were selected by convenience sampling method in 2012. Variables measured in a questionnaire designed according to the Health Belief Model (HBM) included socio-demographics, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived objective barriers, perceived subjective barriers, self-efficacy, knowledge of hypertension, cues to action, and SRB. Answers to the questionnaire were obtained from all the participants, and 24-hour urine samples were collected to determine the 24-hour urinary sodium excretion (24HUNa). Path analyses were used to explore the determinants of SRB. Results: Approximately 22.7% and 45.3% of residents used a salt-restriction-spoon everyday in the rural and urban areas, respectively. The average 24HUNa was 211.19±98.39 mmol for rural residents and 109.22±58.18 mmol for urban residents. Path analyses shown that perceived objective barriers, perceived benefits, perceived severity, knowledge and age were related to SRB and 24HUNa for both rural and urban participants, among which perceived objective barrier (β =  − 0.442 and β =  − 0.543, respectively) was the most important determinant. Conclusion: Improvement of the current salt-restriction-spoon and education on the right usage of the salt-restriction-spoon, the severity of hypertension, and the benefit of salt reduction are necessary, especially among those who are relatively young but at risk of hypertension, those who have lower education levels, and those who live in the rural areas. Cultural beliefs about and preferences for care at the end of life are diverse and unique in many respects. This descriptive qualitative study presents findings about the attitudes and preferences of people born in Japan, China, and Vietnam and living in the southern part of the USA regarding life-sustaining measures. In-depth personal and focus group interviews were conducted with 46 participants and thematic analysis completed. The findings reflected some similarities and differences among the three groups concerning initiation and discontinuance of artificial nutrition and mechanical ventilation. They also demonstrated the requirement for sensitivity to individual needs when honouring the wishes of patients and surrogate decision makers. Interventional studies should follow that test educational strategies to improve practice outcomes for health-care providers who care for these populations at this vulnerable time of life. Abstract: Objective: This multicenter, prospective cohort study evaluated the effect of preoperative nutritional support in abdominal surgical patients at nutritional risk as defined by the Nutritional Risk Screening Tool 2002 (NRS-2002). Methods: A consecutive series of patients admitted for selective abdominal surgery in the Peking Union Medical College Hospital and the Beijing University Third Hospital in Beijing, China were recruited from March 2007 to July 2008. Data were collected on the nutritional risk screening (NRS-2002), the application of perioperative nutritional support, surgery, complications, and length of stay. A minimum of 7 d of parenteral nutrition or enteral nutrition before surgery was considered adequate preoperative nutritional support. Results: In total 1085 patients were recruited, and 512 of them were at nutritional risk. Of the 120 patients with an NRS score at least 5, the complication rate was significantly lower in the preoperative nutrition group compared with the control group (25.6% versus 50.6%, P = 0.008). The postoperative hospital stay was significantly shorter in the preoperative nutrition group than in the control group (13.7 ± 7.9 versus 17.9 ± 11.3 d, P = 0.018). Of the 392 patients with an NRS score from 3 to 4, the complication rate and the postoperative hospital stay were similar between patients with and those without preoperative nutritional support (P = 1.0 and 0.770, respectively). Conclusion: This finding suggests that preoperative nutritional support is beneficial to patients with an NRS score at least 5 by lowering the complication rate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Compound amino acid solution (CAAS) is a large class of solution of amino acids' mixture and was widely used in China. Its extensive nutritional treatment was accompanied by a substantial incidence of adverse reactions, especially life-threatening anaphylaxis. However, the adverse reactions were reported in isolated case reports only, and the reasons behind this needed further investigation. The Chinese language papers were searched from China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang database published in China from 1985 to 2010. The search terms 'anaphylactic', 'anaphylaxis', 'allergic', 'allergy', 'shock', and 'adverse reaction' combined with the term 'amino acid' were used. Totally 71 episodes of anaphylactic shock and seven deaths in 38 articles were analyzed. Chest distress and cool extremities were the most common clinical manifestations. Almost all patients suffered from significant hypotension. The vast majority of patients were not found to be allergic to certain substances. CAAS was inappropriately administrated in more than one-third of patients. The life-threatening anaphylaxis was prominently prevalent in pregnant women, the elderly and patients with hypersensitivity such as asthma, and patients without medicinal indication. Innovation of processing technique and establishment of more strict supervision system are an urgent need for CAAS to control its production quality and thus improve its safety in China.
