Introduction: Malnutrition during a critical window of development in a fetus or infant can result in abnormal cardiac remodeling and function. It is uncertain whether the contribution of these effects continues to impact the cardiac remodeling and function of adults over the course of several decades of growth. Our study examined the impact of early Chinese famine exposure on cardiac remodeling, left ventricular (LV) diastolic function, and LV systolic function in adults. Methods: Participants at high risk of cardiovascular disease from the China Patient-Centered Evaluative Assessment of Cardiac Events Million Persons Project (PEACE MPP) were enrolled. The famine in China lasted from 1959 to 1962. A total of three groups were formed based on the participants' birth dates: pre-famine group, famine exposure group, and post-famine group. Logistic regression and linear mixed models were used to explore the association between famine exposure and cardiac remodeling, LV diastolic function and LV systolic function in adults. Results: The study included 2,758 participants, the mean age was 57.05 years, 62.8% were female, 26.4% had LV hypertrophy (LVH), 59.6% had LV diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), and 10.5% had reduced global longitudinal strain (GLS). Compared to post-famine exposure, participants had independently increased risk of LVH in the famine exposure group (OR: 2.02, 95% CI: 1.60–2.56) and pre-famine exposure (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.06–1.76). Compared to post-famine exposure, the risk of LVDD remarkably increased in the famine exposure group (OR: 3.04, 95% CI: 2.49–3.71) and pre-famine exposure group (OR: 1.87, 95% CI: 1.52–2.31). Famine exposure had no significant impact on GLS but was associated with a significant increase in LV ejection fraction (LVEF) and LV end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD). Significant interactions were observed between the effects of famine exposure and other clinical/sociodemographic variables (gender, systolic blood pressure [SBP] ≥140 mm Hg or not, high school or above or not, and annual income <50,000 RMB or not) on these outcomes. Conclusion: Exposure to famine, particularly during fetal and infant stages, increases the risk of LVH and LVDD in adults. However, the LV systolic function remains preserved. Growth is an important trait in aquaculture that is influenced by various factors, among which genetic regulation plays a crucial role. Megalobrama amblycephala, one of the most important freshwater species in China, exhibits wide variations in body mass among individuals of the same age within the same pool. But the molecular mechanisms underlying wide variation in body mass remain unclear. Here, we performed muscle histological and transcriptome analysis of muscle tissues from Fast-Growing (FG) and Slow-Growing (SG) M. amblycephala at the age of 4 months old (4 mo) and 10 months old (10 mo) to elucidate its muscle development and growth mechanism. The muscle histological analysis showed smaller diameter and higher total number of muscle fibers in FG compared to SG at 4 mo, while larger diameter and total number of muscle fibers were detected in FG at 10 mo. The transcriptome analysis of muscle tissue detected 1171 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between FG and SG at 4 mo, and 718 DEGs between FG and SG at 10 mo. Furthermore, 44 DEGs were consistently up-regulated in FG at both 4 mo and 10 mo. Up-regulated DEGs in FG at 4 mo were mainly enriched in the pathways related to cell proliferation, while down-regulated DEGs were significantly enriched in cell fusion and muscle contraction. Up-regulated DEGs in FG at 10 mo were mainly enriched in the pathways related to cell proliferation and protein synthesis. Therefore, these results provide novel insights into the molecular mechanism of M. amblycephala muscle growth at different stages, and will be of great guiding significance to promote the fast growth of M. amblycephala. Background: Quality sleep is essential for physical and mental health. We aimed to analyze sleep disorders in children with acute leukemia and explore associated factors. Methods: General data and sleep disorders in children with acute leukemia during chemotherapy were collected by general questionnaires, Children's Sleep Disorders Scale and the Parenting Stress Index-short form. Results: In total, 173 valid questionnaires were collected. The total Sleep Disorder Scale score > 39 is considered a sleep disorder, while sleep disorders accounted for 45.66% (79/173). In the cohort, 167 children had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, with 40.12% (67/167) having sleep disorders, while six children had acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia, with 50.00% (3/6) having sleep disorders. Single- and multi-factor regression analyses of age, gender, number of children in the family, and time spent using electronic devices showed that factors influencing sleep disorders in these children were mainly parental scolding and adenoid hypertrophy. Children with sleep disorders had more parental stress than those without sleep disorders (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The high incidence of sleep disorders in children with acute leukemia is related to airway conditions and parental behaviors. Sleep disorders in children can increase parenting stress. Factors potentially affecting sleep quality should be addressed as early as possible, while parental education should be strengthened to better facilitate the physical and psychological recovery of their children. Introduction: Renal function has an important bearing on plasma homocysteine levels. Plasma homocysteine is related to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). However, it remains unclear whether the association between plasma homocysteine levels and LVH is influenced by renal function. This study aimed to investigate relationships among left ventricular mass index (LVMI), plasma homocysteine levels, and renal function in a population from southern China. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in 2,464 patients from June 2016 to July 2021. Patients were divided into three groups based on gender-specific tertiles of homocysteine levels. LVMI ≥115 g/m2 for man or ≥95 g/m2 for woman was defined as LVH. Results: LVMI and the percentage of LVH were increased, while estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was decreased with the increase in homocysteine levels, both significantly. Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that eGFR and homocysteine were independently associated with LVMI in patients with hypertension. No correlation was observed between homocysteine and LVMI in patients without hypertension. Stratified by eGFR, further analysis confirmed homocysteine was independently associated with LVMI (β = 0.126, t = 4.333, p < 0.001) only in hypertensive patients with eGFR ≥90 mL/(min·1.73 m2), not with 60≤ eGFR <90 mL/(min·1.73 m2). Multivariate logistic regression indicated that in hypertensive patients with eGFR ≥90 mL/(min·1.73 m2), the patients in high tertile of homocysteine levels had a nearly twofold increased risk of occurring LVH compared with those in low tertile (high tertile: OR = 2.780, 95% CI: 1.945–3.975, p < 0.001). Background: Renovascular hypertension (RVH) is one of the main causes of hypertensive crisis (HTN-C). It is characterized by acute onset and severe disease, and early diagnosis and treatment are difficult. The objective was to describe the characteristics of RVH and factors associated with RVH leading to HTN-C in children. At present, there are few clinical studies on RVH in children with large cases in China. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of inpatient children with RVH. Patients were divided into non-hypertensive crisis (non-HTN-C) group, and HTN-C group according to the first symptoms and blood pressure. Further, HTN-C were classified as hypertensive urgency (HTN-U) or hypertensive emergency (HTN-E). Results: Fifty-four pediatric cases (41 boys and 13 girls) were included. 83.3% of the RVH cases were ≥ 6 years old. Three cases were classified into the non-HTN-C group. Of the 51 HTN-C cases, 18 cases were grouped as HTN-U and 33 as HTN-E. The HTN-U group were mainly asymptomatic (50.0%, 9/18) while the HTN-E group mainly presented with neurological symptoms (72.7%, 24/33). The number of unknown etiology children was 32 (59.2%). The top three known etiologies were Takayasu's arteritis (50.0%, 11/22), congenital renal dysplasia (27.3%, 6/22) and fibromuscular dysplasia (13.6%, 3/22). As for the target organ damage of RVH, patients had a higher prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (71.4%, 35/49) and retinopathy (77.8%, 21/27). Conclusions: Most RVH patients with HTN-C as the first symptoms, especially for males over 6 years old, should be assessed for RVH even if they were asymptomatic. Most asymptomatic patients with RVH already had target organ damage, and symptomatic patients even developed life-threatening complications. Simple Summary: Wuliangshan Black-bone chickens, an indigenous chicken breed in southwestern China, have characteristics of black skin, black bones, and black meat, and are suitable for rearing at high altitudes. After six generations of selection, the bodyweights of chickens have been greatly improved: cocks and hens have reached 2.0 kg and 1.5 kg weight at 126 days of age, respectively. The breast and thigh muscles are the main meat-producing parts of chicken; assessing and documenting the morphological features of breast and thigh muscle development and meat composition in Wuliangshan Black-bone chickens is very important in terms of their genetic breeding and also consumer interest. This study was conducted to illustrate the morphological features of the breast and thigh muscles at four developmental stages (1, 42, 84, and 126 days of age) of Wuliangshan Black-bone chickens and to compare the chemical composition, fatty acid, and amino acid contents of their meat at 126 days of age (D126). In total, 80 chickens (male, n = 40 and female, n = 40) in the sixth generation from the breeding farm were used in the experiment under free-range rearing conditions. The cross-sectional areas (CSA) of muscle fibers and meat composition were compared between different sex and different muscle types. The results showed that gender did not affect the CSA of the breast muscle fibers but did affect the CSA of the thigh muscle fibers at D42, D84, and D126 (p < 0.05). Muscle types affected the CSA of muscle fibers: male chickens exhibited significantly higher values than female chickens at D42, D84, and D126 (p < 0.05). The results of moisture, crude protein, and crude fat at D126 showed that moisture contents were higher in the thigh muscles than in the breast muscles in male and female chickens (p < 0.05). Gender affected the crude protein contents and crude fat contents: the breast muscle crude protein content was significantly higher than that in the thigh muscle, both in males and females (p < 0.05), whereas the crude fat contents were significantly higher in females than in males (p < 0.05); moreover, the thigh muscle fat contents were significantly higher than those of the breast muscles both in males and females (p < 0.05). Gender and muscle types also affected the fatty acid contents: the PUFA contents of the breast and thigh muscles were significantly higher in male than in female chickens (p < 0.05). Muscle types significantly influenced the total EAA, NEAA, and flavor amino acid contents. The total EAA contents of the breast muscles were significantly higher than those of the thigh muscles in males and females (p < 0.05), whereas the total NEAA and total flavor amino acid contents of the thigh muscles were significantly higher than those of the breast muscles (p < 0.05). To explore the association between lipid profiles and left ventricular hypertrophy in a Chinese general population. We conducted a retrospective observational study to investigate the relationship between lipid markers [including triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, non-HDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein A-I, apolipoprotein B, lipoprotein[a], and composite lipid profiles] and left ventricular hypertrophy. A total of 309,400 participants of two populations (one from Beijing and another from nationwide) who underwent physical examinations at different health management centers between 2009 and 2018 in China were included in the cross-sectional study. 7,475 participants who had multiple physical examinations and initially did not have left ventricular hypertrophy constituted a longitudinal cohort to analyze the association between lipid markers and the new-onset of left ventricular hypertrophy. Left ventricular hypertrophy was measured by echocardiography and defined as an end-diastolic thickness of the interventricular septum or left ventricle posterior wall > 11 mm. The Logistic regression model was used in the cross-sectional study. Cox model and Cox model with restricted cubic splines were used in the longitudinal cohort. In the cross-sectional study, for participants in the highest tertile of each lipid marker compared to the respective lowest, triglycerides [odds ratio (OR): 1.250, 95% CI : 1.060 to 1.474], HDL-cholesterol (OR: 0.780, 95% CI : 0.662 to 0.918), and lipoprotein(a) (OR : 1.311, 95% CI : 1.115 to 1.541) had an association with left ventricular hypertrophy. In the longitudinal cohort, for participants in the highest tertile of each lipid marker at the baseline compared to the respective lowest, triglycerides [hazard ratio (HR): 3.277, 95% CI : 1.720 to 6.244], HDL-cholesterol (HR : 0.516, 95% CI : 0.283 to 0.940), non-HDL-cholesterol (HR : 2.309, 95% CI : 1.296 to 4.112), apolipoprotein B (HR : 2.244, 95% CI : 1.251 to 4.032) showed an association with new-onset left ventricular hypertrophy. In the Cox model with forward stepwise selection, triglycerides were the only lipid markers entered into the final model. Lipids levels, especially triglycerides, are associated with left ventricular hypertrophy. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has been classified separately as an independent risk factor for hypertension. However, comparisons between different body size indices and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in hypertensive populations have not been reported yet. In this study, we enrolled 4,639 hypertensive patients from rural China. Anthropometric indices and cardiovascular disease risk factor variables were measured and analyzed using Spearman's correlation, logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses. Patients in the highest quartile of body size indices were more likely to have left ventricular hypertrophy than those in the lowest quartile; these indices were BMI (adjusted OR: 3.55, 95% CI: 2.90; 4.35), WC (adjusted OR: 2.23, 95% CI: 1.84; 2.70), WHR (adjusted OR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.18; 1.75), and WHtR (adjusted OR: 3.23, 95% CI: 2.62; 3.99). The areas under the ROC curves of BMI (AUC: 0.628, 95% CI: 0.612; 0.644), WHtR (AUC: 0.628, 95% CI: 0.560; 0.593), WHR (AUC: 0.530, 95% CI: 0.513; 0.547), and WC (AUC: 0.576, 95% CI: 0.513; 0.547) were all above 0.5, which indicated that the four anthropometric indicators may be associated with LVH. Aim: Left ventricular hypertrophy and impaired systolic and diastolic function are commonly seen in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but relationships between the disorders and cardiovascular outcomes are not well established among the patients. Methods: Totally, 2020 patients with CKD Stages 1–4 were used in the analysis. Left ventricular hypertrophy was defined by left ventricular mass index >49.2 g/m2.7 in men and > 46.7 g/m2.7 in women. Incident heart failure, non‐heart failure cardiovascular events, and all‐cause mortality were recorded longitudinally. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to evaluate the association between the echo parameters and the outcomes, with death treated as the competing risk event for the cardiovascular events. Results: After a median follow‐up of 4.5 years, 53 heart failure, 76 non‐heart failure cardiovascular events and 82 deaths occurred. No overall association was found between left ventricular hypertrophy and subsequent heart failure, but the relationship was significant among patients with no diabetes with the multivariable adjusted hazard ratio of 3.66 (95% confidence interval: 1.42–9.46). Ejection fraction<55% was associated with both heart failure and non‐heart failure cardiovascular events with hazard ratios of 3.16 (1.28–7.77) and 2.76 (1.08–7.04), respectively. E/A ratio ≤ 0.75 was associated with non‐heart failure cardiovascular events [hazard ratio = 2.03 (1.09–3.80)], compared with E/A ratio of 0.76–1.49. Conclusion: Associations of reduced left ventricular ejection fraction with both heart failure and non‐heart failure cardiovascular events and of impaired left ventricular diastolic function with non‐heart failure cardiovascular events were validated in a Chinese cohort of CKD. Purpose: This study aimed to detect the epidemiological relevance between adenoid hypertrophy (AH) and rhinosinusitis, and AH and allergic rhinitis (AR) through an Internet search. Methods: Internet search query data from January 2011 to December 2019 in China were retrieved from the Baidu Index (BI). Spearman's correlation coefficients were used to detect the correlation among the search volumes of AH, rhinosinusitis, and AR. We also collected search data from the first 5 months of 2020, when quarantine was implemented in China due to the coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic. Then, we compared the search data to those obtained during the same period in 2019 to assess the effects of isolation on AH and AR. Results: Statistically significant relevance was found between the search variations of AH and rhinosinusitis during 2011–2019 (R = 0.643, P < 0.05). However, the relationship between AH and AR was weak (R = − 0.239, P < 0.05) and that between rhinosinusitis and AR (R = − 0.022, P > 0.05) was not relevant. The average monthly search volume of AH and rhinosinusitis had a strong correlation (R = 0.846, P < 0.01), but AH and AR and rhinosinusitis and AR were not correlated (R = – 0.350, P > 0.05; R = – 0.042, P > 0.05, respectively). AH and rhinosinusitis search volumes decreased consistently during the first 5 months of 2020 (isolation), whereas that for AR increased during January–February. Conclusion: AH had an epidemiological relationship with rhinosinusitis, which was not consistent with AR. Flooding has become more frequent and intensive due to climate change, particularly in Asian countries. However, evidence on the long-term health effects of floods from large-scale studies on the vulnerable aged population in China is insufficient. This study analyzed the long-term effects of exposure to flood on electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities, a commonly used indicator of cardiovascular disease (CVD) screening, in middle-aged and elderly people. We evaluated the Chinese National Stroke Screening Survey data of 80,711 follow-up records from 38,375 participants aged > 40 years with two or more visits between 2013 and 2018 in this longitudinal study. Flood exposure was assessed as the presence of a satellite-detected flooded area within 500 m of the residence within 5 years before the survey date. The association between ECG abnormalities and flood exposure was analyzed using a random effects model with multiple adjustments. As age is an important CVD risk factor, a varying-coefficient function was derived to estimate the nonlinear modifying effect of age on the association between ECG abnormalities and flood exposure. The strata-specific associations between ECG abnormalities and flood exposure were applied to characterize vulnerability to flood. The fully adjusted model suggested that flood exposure was associated with an increased risk for ECG abnormalities among the middle-aged and elderly population (odds ratio [OR] 1.74, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.49, 2.03). The ORs of flood exposure for ECG suggesting atrial fibrillation, ST depression, and left ventricular hypertrophy were 1.85 (95 % CI 1.16, 2.94), 6.92 (95 % CI 5.23, 9.16), and 1.55 (95 % CI 0.66, 3.65), respectively. These associations were generally robust in various subpopulations, while a sublinear curve for the negative modifying effect of age was observed on the population vulnerability to flood. Flood exposure was associated with an increased long-term risk for an ECG abnormality. The need for effective measures to mitigate vulnerability to flood is not negligible in China. Objective: Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) is a common manifestation of cardiac involvement in systemic sclerosis (SSc), which is associated with increased mortality, but little is known about the risk factors. The aim is to determine the frequency and potential predictors of SSc-LVDD. Methods: We conducted a prospective multi-center cohort study, enrolling 784 SSc patients assessed by echocardiography between April 2008 and June 2019. Diagnosis of systemic sclerosis was according to the 2013 American College of Rheumatology (ACR)/the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) classification criteria. Data were compared between patients with and without LVDD, while univariate and multivariate regression analysis was performed to determine the factors independently associated with LVDD. Results: LV diastolic dysfunction was present in 246/784 (31.4%) of the subjects. There were no significant differences in gender, BMI, or disease duration between the two groups. Around 40% of the patients in the SSc-LVDD group and in the SSc-non LVDD group had diffused cutaneous involvements. Factors independently associated with LV diastolic dysfunction in multivariable analysis included age at onset (OR 1.053, 95%CI 1.021–1.086, p = 0.001), pulmonary arterial hypertension (OR 3.057, 95%CI 1.468–6.367, p = 0.003), positivity of anti-RNP antibody (OR 2.455, 95%CI 1.049–5.745, p = 0.038), increased WBC count (OR 1.156, 95%CI 1.037–1.287, p = 0.009), elevated levels of uric acid (OR 1.003, 95%CI 1.000–1.006, p = 0.036), and triglyceride (OR 1.515, 95%CI 1.106–2.077, p = 0.010). Conclusion: LV diastolic dysfunction was prevalent in the SSc population. Advanced onset age, PAH, positive anti-RNP antibody, increased WBC count, and adverse metabolic status were independent risk factors for SSc-related LVDD. Background: The clinical manifestations of amyloid cardiomyopathy (AC) are not specific; therefore, AC is often misdiagnosed as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) or hypertensive heart disease (HHD). A differential diagnosis of these three conditions is often necessary in the clinical setting. Objectives: To investigate the differential diagnostic performance of radiomic analysis, based on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) native T1 mapping images for the left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) etiologies. Methods: This retrospective, case-control study was conducted on 91 participants (68 males and 23 females; mean age: 48 ± 13 years), including 22 patients with HHD, 27 patients with AC, 28 patients with HCM, and 14 controls in Tongji Hospital (Wuhan, China). All participants underwent 3.0T CMR imaging. Besides, radiomic analyses were performed using T1 mapping images. The cases were divided into training and test datasets using a random seed. Next, the models were constructed with the training dataset and evaluated with the test dataset. Results: A total of 1,033 radiomic features were extracted in this study. Overall, 11, 28, 19, and eight features were selected to construct the basal T1 mapping, mid-chamber T1 mapping, apical T1 mapping, and multi-module conjoint models, respectively. Optimal performance was reported in the mid-chamber and basal T1 mapping models. The area under the curve (AUC), precision, recall, and F1 score were 0.96, 0.84, 0.82, and 0.83 for the mid-chamber T1 mapping model and 0.96, 0.90, 0.89, and 0.88 for the basal T1 mapping model in the independent test dataset, respectively. The lowest diagnostic performance was observed in the apical T1 mapping model. The AUC, precision, recall, and F1 score of the apical T1 mapping model were 0.86, 0.71, 0.70, and 0.70 in the independent test dataset, respectively. Conclusions: The radiomic analysis of T1 mapping could accurately distinguish the three causes of myocardial hypertrophy, including HCM, HHD, and AC. Background: China's rapid urbanization has created a large number of labour transferring from rural to urban areas and large numbers of college students with left-behind experience (LBE). LBE was an important influencing factor on college students' mental health.Methods: A mixed method involving quantitative survey and qualitative interview was emplyed to explore the influence of LBE on mental health of college students. In the quantitative survey, 1605 college students from three different universities of Shandong province in China were recruited. Their mental health status was measured using Symptom Check-list 90(SCL-90 scale) compiled by American psychologist Derogatis. In the qualitative interview, 40 college students with left-behind experience from the same three universities were interviewed.Results: The prevalence estimate of total mental health problems among left-behind students was 2.14 times higher than that among those without left-behindexperience. LBE increased the problems of somatization, obsessive-compulsion (Ocd), international sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, terror, paranoia, psychoticism and other symptoms. The result of qualitative interview showed the mental health problems of the college students with left-behind experience were mainly on anxiety, depression, Ocd, interpersonal sensitive and hostility, which was consistent with the results of quantitative survey.Limitation: Representativeness of the sample is the major limitation of our study. Due to rare similar studies performed in other countries, we could not compare the results in China to that in other countries.Conclusion: Left-behind experience was an important factor associated with the mental health of college students. We investigated associations of blood pressure (BP) with albuminuria and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in young, middle and older aged patients with hypertension and/or diabetes mellitus. Study participants were treated patients with hypertension or diabetes, enrolled in a China nationwide registry. The 2510 patients were classified into young (<45 years, n = 345), middle (45–64 years, n = 1383) and older (≥65 years, n = 782) age groups. Clinic BP was measured three times consecutively on each of the two clinic visits. These six readings were averaged for analyses. Albuminuria was defined as a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio of ≥30 mg/g. LVH was assessed by the electrocardiogram (ECG) Cornell product and voltage methods. The prevalence of albuminuria and ECG-LVH was 17.8 and 6.5%, respectively. Mean (±SD) systolic/diastolic BP was 132.0 ± 16.5/85.2 ± 11.9 mmHg, 136.8 ± 17.9/81.7 ± 11.2 mmHg, and 139.8 ± 16.7/75.8 ± 10.4 mmHg in the young, middle and older age groups. In the young age group, the prevalence of albuminuria increased from 8.8% in systolic/diastolic BP <120/80 mmHg to 14.6, 16.0% and 16.5% in 120–129/80–84, 130–139/85–89 and ≥140/90 mmHg, respectively. The corresponding values were 8.9, 7.0, 18.1 and 22.2%, respectively, in the middle age group, and 21.2, 15.5, 16.4 and 24.4%, respectively, in the older age group. Adjusted analyses confirmed the J-shaped relation between BP and albuminuria in the older but not young age group. The prevalence of ECG-LVH was significantly (p for trend ≤0.04) higher with increasing BP similarly in all age groups. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in hypertensives. Therefore, early identification of at-risk patients is necessary. The objective of this study was to estimate the risk of LVH among Chinese hypertensives by designing a nomogram. 832 hypertensives were divided into two groups based on the presence of LVH. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and multivariable logistic regression were successively applied for optimal variable selection and nomogram construction. Discrimination power, calibration, and clinical usefulness were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis. Internal validation was performed using the bootstrap method. The nomogram included five predictors, namely gender, duration of hypertension, age, body mass index (BMI), and systolic blood pressure. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.724 (95% CI: 0.687-0.761), indicating moderate discrimination. The calibration curve showed an excellent agreement between the predicted LVH and the actual LVH probability. The risk threshold between 5% and 72% according to the decision curve analysis, and the nomogram is clinically beneficial. Internal validation by bootstrapping with 1000 samples showed a good C-index of 0.715, which suggested that the predictive abilities for the training set and testing set were in consistency. Our study proposed a nomogram that can be utilized to assess the LVH risk rapidly for Chinese hypertensives. This tool could be useful in identifying patients at high risk for LVH. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious pulmonary vascular disease. Excessive proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) plays an important role in the course of this disease. Ligustrazine is an alkaloid monomer extracted from the rhizome of the herb Ligusticum chuanxiong. It is often used to treat cardiovascular diseases, but its effect on PAH has rarely been reported. This study aims to explore the protective effect and mechanism of ligustrazine on PAH. In the in vivo experiment, monocrotaline (MCT) was used to induce PAH in rats, and then ligustrazine (40, 80, 160 mg/kg/day) or sildenafil (25 mg/kg/day) was administered. Four weeks later, hemodynamic changes, right ventricular hypertrophy index, lung morphological characteristics, inflammatory factors, phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), and AKT expression were evaluated. In addition, primary rat PASMCs were extracted by the tissue adhesion method, a proliferation model was established with platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB), and the cells were treated with ligustrazine to investigate its effects on cell proliferation, inflammation, and cell cycle distribution. The results indicate that ligustrazine can markedly alleviate right ventricular systolic pressure, right ventricular hypertrophy, pulmonary vascular remodeling, and inflammation caused by MCT, and that it decreased PI3K and AKT phosphorylation expression. Moreover, ligustrazine can inhibit the proliferation and inflammation of PASMCs and arrest the progression of G0/G1 to S phase through the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Therefore, we conclude that ligustrazine may inhibit the proliferation and inflammation of PASMCs by regulating the activation of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, thereby attenuating MCT-induced PAH in rats. Objective assessment of cardiac hypertrophy in forensic pathology practice is of great significance for forensic pathologists, for whom reference values for normal heart weights are needed. Developed regions such as Europe, the United States, and Japan recalculate the weight of human organs at regular intervals, but in China, there has been no systematic calculation of the weights of human organs since 2006. To statistically analyse the heart weight of Chinese adults postmortem and obtain a reference range. 4170 adult autopsy reports were collected from 12 forensic departments in 10 provinces in China. The causes of death were classified by sex, and heart weight and the heart weight/body height ratio reference values were further calculated according to different body mass index and body heights. Finally, the cutoff value of cardiac hypertrophy in Chinese adults was calculated. In the group of non-cardiovascular disease causes of death, the cardiac weight of the electric death group was higher, while the heart weight of the prolonged bed-rest group was significantly reduced. After the electric death and prolonged bed-rest groups were excluded, heart weight, the heart weight/body height ratio, and cutoff values for cardiac hypertrophy were further classified and analysed according to body mass index. The mean reference values for heart weight in men and women with normal weight status were 325.82 ± 41.60 g and 286.39 ± 44.84 g, and the heart weight/body height ratios were 1.95 ± 0.23 in men and 1.82 ± 0.27, respectively. The cutoff values for cardiac hypertrophy were 387.35 g for men and 346.80 g for women. The heart weight reference values of both sexes in this study were significantly higher than those in 2006, which is considered related to the development of China's economy and the improvement of people's living standards. Background: Sex differences in the long-term prognosis of symptomatic hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) patients undergoing alcohol septal ablation (ASA) remain unclear, especially in the Chinese Han population.Method: This cohort study included 320 HOCM Chinese Han patients who underwent ASA because of symptomatic left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. Patients were grouped according to sex: females (mean±standard deviation age [SD] 50.7±6.8 years) and males (mean±SD age 52.6±7.3 years). Individuals were followed over the long term.Results: Pre-procedure, women had more symptoms (New York Heart Association [NYHA] class III-IV 67.3% vs 56.3%, p=0.03), more atrial fibrillation (23.5% vs 14.6%, p=0.047) than men. Transient complete atrioventricular block after ASA was more common in woman than in men (34.0 vs 23.4%; p=0.048). Residual LVOT gradient, post-procedural residual left ventricular wall thickness, NYHA functional class, and adverse arrhythmic events were comparable between the two groups. The 10-year survival rate (77% vs 89%, p=0.037) and the annual adverse arrhythmic event rate (1.3% vs 0.4%, p<0.01) following ASA were significantly worse in women compared with men. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a significantly lower survival in women compared with men (p=0.023). In multivariable modelling, female sex remained independently associated with higher all-cause mortality (hazard ratio, 1.12; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-1.27; p=0.03) when adjusted for age, NYHA class III-IV symptoms, and other cardiovascular comorbidities.Conclusions: Female patients with HOCM undergoing ASA tended to have more severe symptoms and adverse arrhythmic events. The 10-year survival rate after ASA was significantly worse in women compared with men with HOCM. Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is associated with poor prognosis. In our previous study, it has been reported that patients with acute myocardial infarction and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy exhibited worse long-term outcomes than those with acute myocardial infarction without hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and those with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy without acute myocardial infarction. In this article, we aimed to assess the impact of body mass index on the long-term outcomes of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients with acute myocardial infarction. Methods: Seventy-eight consecutive patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and acute myocardial infarction were included. Obesity was defined as body mass index ⩾28 kg/m2 adapted to Chinese. The long-term endpoints were major adverse cardiac events and secondary endpoints, which included re-hospitalization, recurrent angina, thrombosis, bleeding, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Results: There were no differences in observed in-hospital mortality or 5-year mortality between the two groups of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and acute myocardial infarction patients divided by body mass index. However, significantly increased incidence of re-percutaneous coronary intervention and stroke was observed in the obese group (re-percutaneous coronary intervention: 0.0% vs. 21.4%, p = 0.007; stroke: 5.6% vs. 28.6%, p = 0.042). The 5-year outcomes of major adverse cardiac events were inferior in the obese group (log-rank p = 0.020). Objectives: The purpose of this study was to observe the imaging characteristics of the novel coronavirus pneumonia.Methods: Sixty-three confirmed patients were enrolled from December 30, 2019 to January 31, 2020. High-resolution CT (HRCT) of the chest was performed. The number of affected lobes, ground glass nodules (GGO), patchy/punctate ground glass opacities, patchy consolidation, fibrous stripes and irregular solid nodules in each patient's chest CT image were recorded. Additionally, we performed imaging follow-up of these patients.Results: CT images of 63 confirmed patients were collected. M/F ratio: 33/30. The mean age was 44.9 ± 15.2 years. The mean number of affected lobes was 3.3 ± 1.8. Nineteen (30.2%) patients had one affected lobe, five (7.9%) patients had two affected lobes, four (6.3%) patients had three affected lobes, seven (11.1%) patients had four affected lobes while 28 (44.4%) patients had 5 affected lobes. Fifty-four (85.7%) patients had patchy/punctate ground glass opacities, 14 (22.2%) patients had GGO, 12 (19.0%) patients had patchy consolidation, 11 (17.5%) patients had fibrous stripes and 8 (12.7%) patients had irregular solid nodules. Fifty-four (85.7%) patients progressed, including single GGO increased, enlarged and consolidated; fibrous stripe enlarged, while solid nodules increased and enlarged.Conclusions: Imaging changes in novel viral pneumonia are rapid. The manifestations of the novel coronavirus pneumonia are diverse. Imaging changes of typical viral pneumonia and some specific imaging features were observed. Background: The known risk factors of childhood OSAS include tonsillar and adenoidhypertrophy, obesity, craniofacial anomalies, neuromuscular disorders and African-American (AA) ancestry. Whether other factors such as allergic rhinitis (AR), premature, environmental tobacco smoking (ETS) are associated with OSAS are inconsistent in different studies. Our study enrolled children of a broad age range and included potential risk factors of OSAS derived from previous studies and our own experience. Our objective is to identify risk factors of OSAS in children in a clinical setting. Methods: Children between 2 and 15 years of age exhibiting snoring symptoms who visited the sleep center for polysomnography (PSG) were enrolled. All children completed a questionnaire, physical examination and PSG. The questionnaire included demographic data and information related to potential risk factors for sleep disorders. A physical examination included measurements of height, weight, neck circumference, waist and hip ratio, visual evaluation of the tonsils and the degree of adenoid obstruction. Children with obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (OAHI) ≥ 1 were defined as OSAS. Results: A total of 1578 children were enrolled and1009 children exhibited OSAS. Univariate analyses showed that snoring occurring for ≥ 3 months, male gender, preterm birth, breastfeeding, obesity, neck circumference ≥ 30 cm, waist/hip ratio ≥ 0.95, tonsillar hypertrophy, and adenoid hypertrophy were associated with OSAS. The proportion of low educational level was higher in parents who breastfed their babies than those who didn't. Multivariate analysis showed that snoring for ≥ 3 months, male gender, obesity, breastfeeding, tonsillar hypertrophy, and adenoid hypertrophy were associated with OSAS. Confounders such as socioeconomic status, parental occupation, and health-related behaviors should be explored further to investigate the relationship between breastfeeding and OSAS. Conclusion: The independent risk factors for OSAS in children included snoring ≥ 3 months, male gender, obesity, breastfeeding, tonsillar and adenoid hypertrophy. Background: Prostate volume (PV) and its change rate are important for the progression of prostate disease, but studies on their estimates are inconsistent. Objectives: To investigate whether age, prostate‐specific antigen (PSA), and other specific characteristics are associated with PV and its change rate. Materials and Methods: A community‐based cohort study was conducted in a rural area of China among male residents aged 40–80 years. PV was estimated at baseline and at 4 years of follow‐up by trans‐abdominal ultrasound. Annual PV change rate (PVCR) was calculated as change in volume divided by time interval. Baseline characteristics, including age, serum PSA, and hormones, were evaluated. And their relationships with PV or PVCR were assessed with Pearson correlation and multivariate linear regression analyses. Results: Totally, 462 participants completed the follow‐up with baseline PV (PV0) of 15.6 ± 5.5 ml. PV0 was highly correlated with age and PSA in pairwise correlations (Pearson r = 0.35 and 0.34, respectively, p < 0.01). Multivariate linear regression showed similar associations that PV0 tended to increase with age and PSA. The average PVCR was 0.7 ± 1.8 ml/year. In pairwise correlations, PVCR was inversely correlated with PV0 and positively correlated with PSA, while it was not significantly related to baseline age. Linear regression of PVCR on age and PSA in groups classified by PV0 quartile showed that age was not a significant estimator of PVCR, whereas PSA was. In each PV0 group, PVCR tended to increase with PSA. Discussion and Conclusion: PV was positively associated with age and PSA, and it tended to grow faster in men with smaller baseline PV and higher PSA. PSA can be a valuable parameter for estimating both the size and the growth speed of prostate. Objective: Assess the association between serum sex hormone level and prostate volume in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Material and methods: The study involved 239 BPH patients from January 2013 to June 2015 in our hospital. Each patient collected age, medical history, height, weight, body mass index, as well as a full examination of sex hormones, and transrectal ultrasound results.Results: Estradiol (E2) was significantly associated with prostate volume (r = 0.151, p = .02) and transitional zone volume (r = 0.136, p = .035). The association was more significant after adjusting age and BMI (r = 0.253 and 0.250, p <.001). Patients were divided into two groups according to prostate volume and E2, respectively. E2 in patients with prostate volume ≤50 ml was significantly lower than those with prostate volume >50 ml. Prostate volume, transitional zone volume and age were all significantly higher in the patients with E2 ≥ 160 umol/l than those in the patients with E2 < 160 umol/l. Through logistics regression, E2 (p = .012, OR = 1.004) are the only independent risk factor for prostate volume.Conclusions: E2 is significantly associated with prostate volume. Purpose: Adenoid hypertrophy (AH) is common among young children. Adenoid-based surgery and drug therapy could be applied for symptomatic AH patients, yet the treatment decision is difficult to make due to the diverse cost and efficacy between these two treatments.Methods: A Markov simulation model was designed to estimate the cost-effectiveness (CE) of the adenoid-based surgery and the drug therapy for symptomatic AH patients. Transition probabilities, costs and utilities were extracted from early researches and expert opinions. Simulations using two set of parameter inputs for China and the USA were performed. Primary outcome was cost per QALY gained over a 6-year period. Deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were also conducted.Results: The utility for the surgery group and the drug group were 4.10 quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and 3.58 QALYs, respectively. The cost of the surgery group was more than that of the drug group using model parameters specific to China ($1069.0 vs. $753.7) but was less for the USA ($1994.4 vs. $3977.7). Surgery was dominant over drug therapy when US specific parameters were used. Surgery group had an ICER of $604.0 per QALY when parameters specific to China was used.Conclusion: Surgery is cost-effective in the simulations for both China and the USA at WTP thresholds of $9633.1 and $62,517.5, respectively. People living with HIV (PLWH) have an excess risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities are independently predictive of incident cardiovascular events in the general population. Our study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and correlates of ECG abnormalities among PLWH in Shanghai, China. We used a cross-sectional design to collect data from Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, China. A total of 587 HIV-infected patients aged between 18 and 75 years were recruited between January 2015 and February 2016. The overall prevalence of any type of ECG abnormalities was 53.3%. The prevalence of sinus tachycardia, ST-T segment elevation and left ventricular hypertrophy was 23.0%, 18.1%, and 6.8%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that ST-T segment elevation was positively associated with higher baseline HIV viral load (= 4 log10 copies/mL), and sinus tachycardia was negatively associated with older age but positively associated with lower CD4 cell count, higher baseline HIV viral load (= 4 log10 copies/mL) and higher lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) level (=133 mg/dL). Any coded ECG abnormality was positively associated with higher baseline HIV viral load (= 4 log10 copies/mL). ECG abnormalities including sinus tachycardia and ST-T segment elevation are prevalent among Chinese HIV patients, which are significantly associated with immunodeficiency and HIV viral load. Swertia is a diverse genus of herbs belonging to the family Gentianaceae and comprising roughly 170 species distributed throughout the world, but is most diverse in temperate and subtropical regions and in montane tropics. In Bhutan, China, India, Japan, and Nepal, some Swertia species are recognized for their anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, activity, finding use in traditional medicine to treat malaria fever, liver diseases, gastric trouble, jaundice, diabetes, hepatitis, and other ailments. The aim of the present review is to provide updated and comprehensive information on the genus Swertia , for promotin the development and uses of such ethnomedical resources. Swertia species have been used in Indian traditional medical systems, the traditional Chinese system, and traditional Tibetan folk medicine for treating various ailments. In China, it has also been used as medicinal herbs for treating hepatitis, cholecystitis, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, dysentery, and scabies. Broad spectrums of phytochemicals such as xanthonoids, iridoids/secoiridoids, flavonoid, alkaloids, and terpenoids have been identified from Swertia spp. The crude extracts and isolated metabolites from Swertia spp. exhibited a wide range of in vitro and in vivo biological and pharmacological activities, including anticancer, anti-diabetic, antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-hepatitis, anthelmintic, anti-leishmanial, neuroprotective, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, hepatoprotective, gastric emptying and gastrointestinal motility, inhibitors of 5α-reductase, β-glucuronidase inhibitory, anti-Benign prostatic hyperplasia and anti-mutagenic activities. The extensive literature survey reveals that Swertia species have been used for medicinal purpose in various parts of the world and there is significant traditional evidence of their uses. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of tadalafil in Asian men with both lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia and erectile dysfunction. Methods: The present phase 3, randomized, double‐blind, parallel, placebo‐ and tamsulosin‐controlled study was carried out at 40 study centers in the Asia–Pacific region (mainland China, Taiwan and Korea; NCT01937871). Participants were randomized to receive a placebo (n = 361), tadalafil 5 mg (n = 362) or tamsulosin 0.2 mg (n = 185) in a 2:2:1 ratio for 12 weeks. Results: A total of 909 Asian men were randomized into three groups. After 12 weeks of treatment, a statistically significant improvement in least squares mean change from baseline in total International Prostate Symptom Score was observed in the tadalafil versus the placebo group (−5.49 vs −4.08, respectively; P < 0.001). A statistically significant improvement in the change from baseline for the International Index of Erectile Function‐Erectile Function domain score, was observed in tadalafil compared with the placebo at 12 weeks (5.24 vs 1.88, respectively; P < 0.001). A significant improvement was observed in the change from baseline in the percentage of "Yes" responses to Sexual Encounter Profile questions 2 and 3 in the tadalafil versus placebo group at 12 weeks (23.87% vs 10.90%; P < 0.001 and 36.62% vs 15.96%; P < 0.001, respectively). Safety results were consistent with the known tadalafil safety profile. Conclusions: Tadalafil is efficacious and well tolerated in the treatment of Asian men with both lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia and erectile dysfunction. To compare central and brachial blood pressure (BP) in the association of target organ damage (TOD) in a community-based elderly population, 1599 (aged 71.4 ± 6.1 years) participants in northern Shanghai were recruited. TOD included left ventricular hypertrophy (n = 1556), left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (n = 1524), carotid plaque (n = 1558), arteriosclerosis (n = 1485), and microalbuminuria (n = 1516). Both central and brachial BP significantly correlated with TOD. In full-model regression, central BP was significantly associated with all TOD (P ≤ .04), whereas brachial BP was only significantly associated with left ventricular hypertrophy and arteriosclerosis (P ≤ .01). Similarly, in stepwise regression, central BP was significantly associated with left ventricular hypertrophy, left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, arteriosclerosis, and microalbuminuria (P ≤ .04), while brachial BP was not associated with any TOD. Receiver operating characteristic analyses indicated that central BP identified arteriosclerosis and microalbuminuria better than brachial BP (P ≤ .01). Background: Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hyperpyrexia, anhidrosis, pain insensitivity, self-inflicted injuries, and intellectual disability. The anesthetic management of these patients is challenging owing to the high risk of perioperative complications resulting from their autonomic dysfunction, such as hyperthermia, hypotension, and bradycardia, which result from autonomic nervous system dysfunction.Case Presentation: Two 3-year-old Han Chinese identical male twins (weighing 13.5 kg and measuring 93 cm tall) were previously diagnosed as having congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis based on clinical features and genetic screening. According to the presence of loud snoring and heavy breathing during sleep and neck radiograph findings, they were diagnosed as having tonsil and adenoid hypertrophy and needed adenotonsillectomy. Because of innate analgesia, some reports suggested that patients with congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis do not require perioperative pain control. Accordingly, our patients did not receive opiates. We describe the general anesthetic management of these patients using sevoflurane and propofol, but without opiates, for adenotonsillectomy. Remarkable tachycardia and hypertension occurred during airway manipulation and when the surgical stimuli increased, and their temperatures increased from 36 °C and 36.8 °C to 37.8 °C and 38.5 °C, respectively. Patients with congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis lack pain sensation, but they may have tactile hyperesthesia. Surgical noxious stimuli may therefore produce a stress response and unpleasant sensations, leading to hemodynamic fluctuation and temperature increase.Conclusions: On the basis of these findings, we suggest that careful intraoperative opiate titration may be justified to blunt the surgical stress response and promote hemodynamic and temperature stability in similar patients; we also recommend the preparation of warming and cooling devices and continuous temperature monitoring in these patients. Objective The objective of this study was to assess left atrial (LA) function with two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2DSTE) in addition to standard echocardiographic assessments in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) before and 1 year after septal ablation (SA). Methods The study included 31 patients with HOCM, who underwent SA. Each patient with HOCM underwent a complete two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography before and 1 year after the SA. The measurements included basal septal thickness, left ventricular outflow trace (LVOT) gradient, mitral regurgitation (MR) grade, LA dimensions, left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction, and tissue Doppler parameters of lateral mitral annular e ′ and septal mitral annular e ′. The LA wall was tracked on a frame-by-frame basis using 2DSTE, and LA volume waveforms were generated. The maximum LA volume (LAVmax), minimal LA volume (LAVmin), and the LA volume before atrial contraction (LAVpre-a) were measured. The LA reservoir function was calculated as the expansion index and diastolic emptying index. The LA conduit function was calculated as the passive emptying percentage of total emptying (PE) and the passive emptying index (PEI). The LA booster function was calculated as the active emptying percentage of total emptying (AE) and the active emptying index (AEI). Results The LVOT gradient, end-diastolic septal base thickness, the grade of MR, and LA end-diastolic size were significantly decreased in patients with HOCM before and 1 year after the SA (All P<.05). The lateral mitral annular e ′ was significantly increased ( P<.05), and the E/lateral e ′ ratio was significantly decreased ( P<.05), whereas septal mitral annular e ′ was significantly decreased ( P<.05), and the E/septal e ′ ratio was significantly increased ( P<.05). LAVImax, LAVImin, and LAVIpre-a were significantly decreased 1 year after the SA (All P<.05). The expansion and diastolic emptying indices were significantly increased (All P<.05) at 1 year after the SA. PE and PEI were significantly increased (All P<.05). The AE and AEI were significantly decreased (All P<.05). LAVImax, LAVImin, and LAVIpre-a of the responders group were significantly lower than those of the nonresponders group (All P<.05). As a traditional Chinese medicine, Naoxintong capsule (NXT) has been approved by China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA), which is used for cardiocerebrovascular disease treatment. Here we found that NXT extract significantly promoted H9c2 cardiomyocyte cell autophagy involved in increased autophagy-associated gene expression leading to inhibition of mTOR signaling. Moreover, NXT extract increased PPARγ protein expression and transcription activity of H9c2 cell. Consistent with this, in PPARγ gene silenced H9c2 cells, NXT had no effect on autophagy and mTOR signaling. Furthermore, NXT/PPARγ-mediated H9c2 autophagy led to inhibition of cardiomyocyte cell hypertrophy. The left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT) and interventricular septum thickness (IVST) are generally regarded as the functional parts of the left ventricular (LV) structure. This paper aims to examine the effects of geographical indices on healthy Han adults' LV structural indices and to offer a scientific basis for developing a unified standard for the reference values of adults' LV structural indices in China. Fifteen terrain, climate, and soil indices were examined as geographical explanatory variables. Statistical analysis was performed using correlation analysis. Moreover, a back propagation neural network (BPNN) and a support vector regression (SVR) were applied to developing models to predict the values of two indices. After the prediction models were built, distribution maps were produced. The results show that LV structural indices are characteristically associated with latitude, longitude, altitude, average temperature, average wind velocity, topsoil sand fraction, topsoil silt fraction, topsoil organic carbon, and topsoil sodicity. The model test analyses show the BPNN model possesses better simulative and predictive ability in comparison with the SVR model. The distribution maps of the LV structural indices show that, in China, the values are higher in the west and lower in the east. These results demonstrate that the reference values of the adults' LV structural indices will be different affected by different geographical environment. The reference values of LV structural indices in one region can be calculated by setting up a BPNN, which showed better applicability in this study. Conclusion:From aspect of fluid dynamics, expanding patients’ nasopharyngeal coronal-sectional area to 48.3–54.7% of normal area will bring the airflow velocity back to normal in adenoidal hypertrophy children. It might provide a suggestion for adenoidectomy range selection and whether total resection is necessary. Objectives:To evaluate the nasopharyngeal airflow characteristics in pediatric OSA patients with adenoidal hypertrophy, and to explore the proper resection range for adenoidectomy Method:Nine OSA patients and four normal children were recruited. The CT scans of their upper airway were collected and used to construct three dimensional models for fluid dynamics analysis. Using computational fluid dynamics, indices such as velocity, pressure, and coronal-sectional area were calculated. Results:Compared with the normal, the OSA children showed three characteristics in nasopharyngeal: the airflow velocity was significantly higher (p < 0.05), the coronal-sectional area was significantly smaller (p < 0.01), while pressure showed no difference (p > 0.05). In a study of the relationship between velocity and coronal-sectional area, this study investigates different coronal-sectional areas from 30–300 mm2. It was found that, when patients’ nasopharyngeal coronal-sectional area was expanded over 155–170 mm2, namely 48.3–54.7% of normal area, airflow velocity in nasopharyngeal showed no difference than normal. Objectives: Investigate the effectiveness of alcohol septal ablation (ASA) and transaortic extended myectomy (TEM) in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) with midventricular obstruction (MVO).Background: MVO is less common than subaortic obstruction. Data on the effectiveness of ASA and TEM in MVO are lacking.Methods: The clinical profiles of 22 patients undergoing ASA and 37 patients undergoing TEM were compared. No patient had apical aneurysm, abnormal chordae, mitral valve replacement or repair.Results: Baseline midventricular pressure gradient and symptoms were comparable between the ASA and TEM groups. During follow-up, both groups demonstrated substantial reduction in pressure gradient (the ASA group: 79.7 ± 21.2 mm Hg to 43.7 ± 28.9 mm Hg, P < 0.001; the TEM group: 69.0 ± 23.9 mm Hg to 15.0 ± 16.9 mm Hg, P < 0.001). The reduction in pressure gradient was greater (78.9 ± 18.6% vs. 46.4 ± 33.4%, P < 0.001) and the residual pressure gradient was lower after TEM versus ASA (P < 0.001). Patients with New York Heart Association class III/IV dyspnea decreased from 59.1 to 18.2% (P = 0.022) in the ASA group and from 56.8 to 5.6% (P < 0.001) in the TEM group. Patients with Canadian Cardiovascular Society class III/IV angina decreased from 40.9 to 9.1% (P = 0.016) in the ASA group and from 32.4 to 0% (P < 0.001) in the TEM group.Conclusions: While ASA and TEM both improve gradients and symptoms, TEM may provide a more reliable reduction in gradients compared to ASA. Despite that estradiol can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases in ovariectomized animals in the plains, its effect on animals at high altitude has seldom been reported. We hypothesize that estradiol can ameliorate cardiac damage to ovariectomized rats induced by chronic exposure to hypobaric hypoxia at high altitude. This study was intended to investigate whether cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging could reveal cardioprotective effect of estradiol on ovariectomized rats under chronic exposure to hypobaric hypoxia at high altitude. Thirty-two rats were randomized into the Control group (Plain), HH + Sham group (Hypobaric Hypoxia + Sham), HH + OVX group (Hypobaric Hypoxia + Bilateral Ovariectomy) and HH-OVX + E2 group (Hypobaric Hypoxia + Bilateral Ovariectomy + Estradiol, 50 μg/kg, 3 times a week, for 6 weeks) (n = 8 per group). Except the Control group (altitude: 500 m), rats in other groups were subcutaneously injected with 17β -estradiol or vehicle and exposed to chronic hypobaric hypoxia in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (altitude: 4250 m), China, for 6 weeks. Biventricular cardiac function and global strain of the rats were measured by CMR and analyzed using the cine tissue tracking techniques. Biochemical tests, histopathology and electronic microscopy were used to evaluate the protective effect of estradiol on the heart tissue of ovariectomized rats exposed to a high-altitude environment. The biventricular ejection fraction and global strains decreased in the HH + OVX group compared with that in the Control group (all p < 0.05). All the aforementioned changes in the HH + OVX group ameliorated in the HH-OVX + E2 group (all p < 0.05). Estradiol also alleviated the right ventricular dilatation and hypertrophy in the HH + OVX group (all p < 0.05). Background: There has been limited data addressing outcomes of extensive septal myectomy in Chinese patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). In this study, the objective was to evaluate the clinical and echocardiographic outcomes of extensive septal myectomy in a relative large number of Chinese HOCM patients over long-term follow-up.Methods: We retrospectively studied 139 consecutive HOCM patients (age 43 ± 15 years, 37 % male) who underwent extensive left ventricular septal myectomy. During the perioperative period, all patients were examined by echocardiography. All-cause death and cardiac death were considered as primary endpoints during follow-up. Perioperative data was obtained by retrospective review of institutional surgical databases. Follow-up data of echocardiography and clinical status was recorded through outpatient interview.Results: Perioperative events consisted of arrhythmia, retraction injury to aortic valve leaflets, pleural effusion, and hemodialysis and the use of intra-aortic balloon pump. There was no in-hospital mortality. The follow-up period averaged 5.6 ± 0.9 years and overall survivals were 100.0, 99.3, 99.3, 98.5 and 97.8 % at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 years, respectively. Left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) gradient decreased form preoperative 84 ± 17 mmHg to 12 ± 3 mmHg at 2.5 years after surgery and it further reduced to 6 ± 3 mmHg at 5 years after surgery (P < 0.05). Compared with the preoperative levels, interventricualr septal thickness decreased by 32 % while diastole left ventricular inner diameter approximately increased by 10 % and ejection fraction (EF) was significantly elevated during follow-up (P < 0.05). By echocardiography detection, mitral regurgitation was ameliorated for HOCM patients after surgery. There was significant improvement in New York Heart Association (NYHA) class. The proportion of NYHA III and IV decreased from preoperative 58 to 19 % at 2.5 years after surgery and it reduced to 11 % at 5 years after operation.Conclusion: Extensive septal myectomy offers minimal operative risk and provides long-term relief for LVOT obstruction in Chinese HOCM patients. Background: The association of metabolic syndrome (MS) with left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy is controversial. The objective of our study was to investigate the influence of MS on LV mass and geometry in community-based hypertensive patients among Han Chinese. Materials and Methods: This study included 1733 metabolic syndrome patients according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) definition and 2373 non-MS hypertension patients. LV hypertrophy was diagnosed by the criteria of LV mass >49.2 g/m27 for men and 46.7 g/m27 for women. LV geometric patterns (normal, concentric remodeling, concentric or eccentric hypertrophy) were calculated according to LV hypertrophy and relative wall thickness. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of MS for LV hypertrophy and LV geometry abnormality. Results: The LV mass and LV mass index were higher in the MS group than in the non-MS group. In multiple adjusted models. LV mass index, LV mass, interventricular septum, and post wall were raised with the increased number of MS disorders. MS was associated with increased LV hypertrophy risk (unadjusted OR 1.38; 95% CI 1.21-1.57); age, sex, and blood pressure (BP; adjusted OR 1.39; 95% CI 1.22-1.59). MS was also associated with increased risk of eccentric hypertrophy in male and female patients. MS was only associated with increased risk of concentric hypertrophy in female patients; and MS was not associated with concentric remodeling. Conclusion: LV mass and LV mass index were associated with the increased number of MS disorders in the Chinese community-based hypertensive population. Both nocturnal hypertension and nondipping pattern are associated with target organ damages (TODs); however, no data exist with respect to Chinese patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The authors recruited 1322 patients with CKD admitted to our hospital division and referred with data in this cross-sectional study. Patients with nocturnal systolic hypertension had a lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and higher left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) compared with patients with normal nocturnal systolic blood pressure (SPB; all, P<.001), while patients in the dipper and nondipper groups had similar levels of eGFR, LVMI, and cIMT when the patients had a similar nocturnal SBP. Factorial-designed analysis of variance indicated that the main effect of nocturnal SBP was significant for all TOD differences (all, P<.001), but no significance existed with respect to the main effect of the dipper pattern and an interaction between the two factors (all, P>.05). Nocturnal systolic hypertension, rather than nondipping pattern, was an independent risk factor for TOD in CKD patients. Smilax glabra Roxb., the dry rhizome of Sarsaparilla, which is also known as Tu fuling (TFL) in China, is a well-known traditional CHINESE medicine that is widely used for detoxication, relieving dampness and as a diuretic. We have previously shown that the extracted TFL flavonoids (designated TFLF) possess anti-cardiac hypertrophy effects in vitro. However, the anti-cardiac hypertrophy effects of TFLF in vivo and the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. To reveal the underlying therapeutic mechanism of TFLF on cardiac hypertrophy by using transverse aortic constriction (TAC) model and cellular assays in vitro. Cardiac hypertrophy was replicated by TAC surgery in rats or by isoprenaline treatment of rat H9C2 myocardial cells in vitro. Cardiac structure and function were evaluated by echocardiographic and hemodynamic examinations in vivo and histological analysis of tissues ex vivo. Biochemical kits and quantitative PCR were used to analyze markers of cardiac hypertrophy. Expression and phosphorylation of key proteins in the Raf/MEK/ERK pathway were quantified by Western blotting. We further confirmed our findings in H9C2 rat cardiomyocytes treated with isoprenaline and the ERK inhibitor in vitro. TFLF attenuated cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis and improved cardiac dysfunction in TAC rats. TFLF treatment induced a strong reduction in serum NT-proBNP levels. Cardiac hypertrophy marker gene (ANP , BNP and β-MHC) expression and the phosphorylation levels of c-Raf and ERK1/2 were decreased by TFLF treatment. TFLF also protected H9C2 cells from isoprenaline-induced hypertrophy in vitro via a similar molecular mechanism as that observed in the rat heart. Moreover, pretreatment with TRLF and the ERK inhibitor further inhibited the mRNA overexpression of hypertrophic genes in vitro. TFLFs may protect against pathological cardiac hypertrophy via negative regulation of the Raf/MEK/ERK pathway. Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.) is a traditional economic tree species in China. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) is widely used in combination to treat hypertension and complications in clinical practice. However, the antihypertensive effect of GBE alone is weak and it is also difficult to study the mechanism because of its complex composition. This study was to prepare a new component group of Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBLCG) with clear chemical structures, and to investigate its effect on reducing blood pressure and improving myocardial hypertrophy in spontaneously hypertensive rats with GBE and amlodipine as positive controls. The results showed that total flavonoid aglycones (TFAs) of GBLCG was mainly composed of quercetin (QCT), kaempferol (KMF) and isorhamnetin (ISR); Total terpenoid lactones (TTLs) of GBLCG might be a novel cocrystal composed of Ginkgolide A (GA), Ginkgolide B (GB) Ginkgolide C (GC), Ginkgolide J (GJ) and bilobalide (BB). The hypotensive activity of GBLCG (4.4 mg/kg) group was better than that of GBE group (p < 0.05), and the effect of improving myocardial hypertrophy was better than that of amlodipine besylate group (p < 0.01). GBLCG might reduce blood pressure and improve myocardial hypertrophy by promoting the synthesis and release of NO in endothelial cells, reducing oxidative stress, inhibiting platelet aggregation and promoting lesion circulation. As a common cardiac disease mainly caused by gene mutations in sarcomeric cytoskeletal, calcium-handling, nuclear envelope, desmosomal, and transcription factor genes, inherited cardiomyopathy is becoming one of the major etiological factors of sudden cardiac death (SCD) and heart failure (HF). This disease is characterized by remarkable genetic heterogeneity, which makes it difficult to screen for pathogenic mutations using Sanger sequencing. In the present study, three probands, one with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (FHCM) and two with familial dilated cardiomyopathy (FDCM), were recruited together with their respective family members. Using next-generation sequencing technology (NGS), 24 genes frequently known to be related to inherited cardiomyopathy were screened. Two hot spots (TNNI3-p.Arg145Gly, and LMNA-p.Arg190Trp) and double (LMNA-p.Arg190Trp plus MYH7-p.Arg1045His) heterozygous mutations were found to be highly correlated with familial cardiomyopathy. FDCM patients with doubly heterozygous mutations show a notably severe phenotype as we could confirm in our study; this indicates that the double mutations had a dose effect. In addition, it is proposed that genetic testing using NGS technology can be used as a cost-effective screening tool and help guide the treatment of patients with familial cardiomyopathy particularly regarding the risk of family members who are clinically asymptomatic. Background There is debate regarding the predictive value of interventricular septum ( IVS) wall thickness for adverse events. Aims The study investigated the association between the severity of thickened IVS and all-cause death in Chinese patients with coronary artery disease ( CAD). Methods A total of 2297 CAD patients verified by angiography was consecutively included. Patients were grouped according to the severity of thickened IVS. Cox regression analysis was conducted to determine the independent prognostic value of thickened IVS for all-cause death. Results During a median follow up of 25 months, 149 patients died. A gradient increase in the risk of death was observed across thickened IVS groups. Compared to patients with normal IVS thickness, the adjusted hazard ratio ( HR) was 1.49 (95% confidence interval ( CI) 1.00-2.23, P = 0.05) and 2.13 (95% CI 1.29-3.54, P = 0.003) for all-cause death in those with mildly and moderately/severely thickened IVS respectively. For one unit increase in IVS thickness, the risk of all-cause death was elevated by 14% (adjusted HR 1.14, 95% CI 1.05-1.24, P = 0.003). In patients with normal indexed left ventricular mass, thickened IVS was also demonstrated as an independent risk factor for all-cause death. Excessive anthropogenic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) inputs have caused an alarming increase in harmful cyanobacterial blooms, threatening sustainability of lakes and reservoirs worldwide. Hypertrophic Lake Taihu, China’s third largest freshwater lake, typifies this predicament, with toxic blooms of the non-N2 fixing cyanobacteria Microcystis spp. dominating from spring through fall. Previous studies indicate N and P reductions are needed to reduce bloom magnitude and duration. However, N reductions may encourage replacement of non-N2 fixing with N2 fixing cyanobacteria. This potentially counterproductive scenario was evaluated using replicate, large (1000 L), in-lake mesocosms during summer bloom periods. N+P additions led to maximum phytoplankton production. Phosphorus enrichment, which promoted N limitation, resulted in increases in N2 fixing taxa (Anabaena spp.), but it did not lead to significant replacement of non-N2 fixing with N2 fixing cyanobacteria, and N2 fixation rates remained ecologically insignificant. Furthermore, P enrichment failed to increase phytoplankton production relative to controls, indicating that N was the most limiting nutrient throughout this period. We propose that Microcystis spp. and other non-N2 fixing genera can maintain dominance in this shallow, highly turbid, nutrient-enriched lake by outcompeting N2 fixing taxa for existing sources of N and P stored and cycled in the lake. To bring Taihu and other hypertrophic systems below the bloom threshold, both N and P reductions will be needed until the legacy of high N and P loading and sediment nutrient storage in these systems is depleted. Myostatin, encoded by theMSTNgene, is a strong regulator of skeletal muscle growth. The present study aimed to investigate whether the A55T and K153R polymorphisms ofMSTNwere associated with the strength training-induced muscle hypertrophy among Han Chinese men. A total of 94 healthy, untrained men were recruited for an 8-week strength training programme. The thicknesses of biceps and quadriceps, along with anthropometric measurements of the participants, were assessed before and after the programme. TheMSTNpolymorphisms were subsequently genotyped employing polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique and confirmed by DNA sequencing. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the pre- and post-training measurements between carriers of different polymorphic genotypes. Our results indicated that individuals with AT + TT genotype of the A55T polymorphism showed a significant increase in the thickness of biceps (0.292 ± 0.210 cm,P = 0.03), but not quadriceps (0.254 ± 0.198 cm,P = 0.07), compared to carriers of AA genotype. For the K153R polymorphism, the increases in the thicknesses of both biceps (0.300 ± 0.131 cm) and quadriceps (0.421 ± 0.281 cm) were significantly higher among individuals with KR than those with KK genotypes (P < 0.01 for both muscles). The results obtained therefore suggested a possible association between the two polymorphisms and the strength training-induced muscle hypertrophy among men of Han Chinese ethnicity. Introduction: Our study aimed to disclose the relationship of cardiac sympathetic nerve innervation and excitability to myocardial hypertrophy in very old elderly male hypertensive patients with low serum testosterone level. Methods: A total of 80 elderly male hypertensive patients aged from 80 to 95 years were recruited. Heart rate variability is determined by 24 h dynamic electrocardiogram and heart rate variability analysis system. Cardiac function and left ventricular mass index were determined using color Doppler ultrasound. Results: Standard deviation of all normal sinus R-R intervals over 24 h (SDNN) significantly decreased in hypertensive cardiac hypertrophy patients as compared with those without cardiac hypertrophy. SDANN and Standard deviation of the average normal sinus R-R intervals for all 5-min segment index, time-domain index reflecting sympathetic nerve tension, obviously decreased and LFnu and LFnu/HFnu, frequency-domain index representing sympathetic nerve excitability, significantly increased in hypertensive cardiac hypertrophy patients as compared with those without cardiac hypertrophy. Myocardial norepinephrine content significantly increased while tyrosine hydroxylase expression significantly lowered in hypertensive cardiac hypertrophy patients, and a negative correlation between myocardial tyrosine hydroxylase expression and myocardial norepinephrine content was present. Serum total testosterone level decreased in hypertensive cardiac hypertrophy patients and was an independent risk factor for the increase in myocardial norepinephrine content and decrease in tyrosine hydroxylase expression. Conclusions: These data confirm that cardiac sympathetic nerve hypoinnervation and relative increase in cardiac sympathetic nerve excitability are closely related to cardiac hypertrophy in very old hypertensive patients. A lower serum total testosterone level was the independent risk factor of cardiac sympathetic nerve hypoinnervation and relative increase in excitability in very old male hypertensive patients. Background Pacing has been proposed as a treatment for patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), but there are few studies with long-term follow-up. We evaluated the long-term effects of dual-chamber pacing therapy for patients with HOCM, and to identify the most prognosis-specific factors for predicting outcome in such treating methods. Methods A total of 37 HOCM patients implanted with dual-chamber pacemakers were enrolled consecutively and followed-up. Thirty-seven cases were followed for 1 year, 26 cases for 2 years, 10 cases for 3 years, and eight cases for 4 years. At each annual point of follow-up after pacemaker implantation, the pacing frequency, pacing threshold, impedance, atrioventricular delay, and cumulative percentage of atrial and ventricular pacing were tested, respectively. In addition, left atrial dimension (LAD), left ventricular end diastolic dimension (LVEDd), left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPW), interventricular septum thickness (IVS), left ventricular outflow tract dimension (LVOTd), peak velocity of left ventricular outflow tract (VLVOT), left ventricular outflow tract pressure gradient (LVOTPG), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) were measured. Mitral valve systolic anterior motion (SAM) was also observed. Pacing parameters and echocardiography indexes before and after pacemaker implantation were dynamically compared. Results Pacing frequency and atrioventricular delay were adjusted to 60-70 beats per minute and 90-180 ms, respectively, in order to ensure the ratio of ventricular pacing was more than 98%. Pacing threshold and pacing impedance were kept in normal ranges. The differences of various pacing parameters were of no statistical significance within the 4 years of follow-up (P > 0.05). Compared with prior to pacing, it was observed that the IVS, VLVOT, and LVOTPG declined significantly (P < 0.01), the LVOTd widened significantly (P < 0.01), and the SAM phenomenon improved obviously (P < 0.01) at 1, 2, 3, and 4 years after pacemaker implantation. Additionally, the changes in LAD, LVEDd, LVPW, LVEF, and PASP were statistically insignificant (P > 0.05). Conclusions The cardiac structural reconstruction in patients with HOCM can be chronically improved by dual-chamber pacing therapy. The IVS, LVOTd, VLVOT, and LVOTPG can be used as sensitive and specific factors in evaluating the long-term effects of dual-chamber pacing therapy for HOCM.
