Hyperspectral imaging technology is a research hotspot in the field of cultural heritage protection. It can be used to quickly and noninvasively obtain detailed spectral information from the surfaces of cultural relics of different categories. We can intuitively analyse pigment compositions, line characteristics, painting skills and patterns using spectral information. Hyperspectral imaging has high scientific significance and application value for the protection, restoration and research of ancient murals and other cultural relics. In this study, a mural from Daheitian hall in the Qutan temple, Qinghai Province, China, was used as a sample. The hyperspectral data were acquired and analysed for several purposes. Pigment spectral matching and abundance inversion were carried out to obtain the pigment distribution. These data were enhanced by continuum removal and histogram stretching to obtain hidden information. The dark channel prior, Criminisi and Retinex methods were used to virtually restore the image of the mural. The results indicated that by using hyperspectral imaging data, the constructed pure pigment spectrum library and suitable approaches, the types and distributions of mural pigments can be quantitatively analysed, and the lines in murals can be extracted. Hyperspectral images are helpful for identifying information hidden by pigments or surface materials. Mural images can be enhanced, and hidden information can be highlighted using enhancement methods, such as continuum removal and histogram linear stretching. In addition, hyperspectral imaging data have unique advantages in the restoration of mural images, and the combination of defogging methods and image inpainting algorithms can realize the virtual restoration of mural images. In brief, hyperspectral imaging technology was found to have a highly favourable effect on pigment analysis, line extraction, information enhancement, hidden information extraction and the virtual restoration of ancient murals. The Northern Wei Dynasty (386–534 CE) murals of Cave 254 in the Mogao Grottoes, China, have been extensively affected by pigment color changes and fading. These issues severely hinder efforts to correctly understand the value and painting process of murals from this historic period. The virtual reconstruction of the faded murals reflects the analysis results of the pigments applied during the painting process and provides a new direction for conservation and art research. However, simple virtual reconstructions may not be accurate owing to deficiencies in our understanding of the color-changed pigments and fading of image lines. In this study, multi-band imaging (MSI) was performed to obtain infrared-reflected false color, ultraviolet-reflected false color, and ultraviolet luminescence images of the mural. A portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, portable digital microscope, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometer, and confocal Raman microscope were used. Non-invasive and minimally invasive analyses of local portions of different color areas were performed to identify their pigments and map the strata, and a hue–saturation–brightness palette was constructed for these pigments. Finally, the pigment analysis results were combined with the multi-band image features to determine the pigment distribution of the mural, which was then used to virtually reconstruct the original color and appearance of the faded mural under ideal conditions. This study is the first to use a virtual reconstruction based on objective analyses to simulate the original color, painting processes, and pigment stratigraphy of a mural from the Northern Wei Dynasty. A preliminary discussion of the relationship between the painting processes of the mural and color changes in its pigments was also performed. This paper presents scientific analyses of the wall paintings in Wudang Lamasery, which is located in the Baotou area of Inner Mongolia, China. Raman spectroscopy was used to analyze the pigments of the mural of the Lam rim Hall. The results show that vermilion, red lead, chrome yellow, emerald green and synthetic ultramarine were used. Pine resin, a valuable secondary metabolite, is derived from the products of photosynthesis. Pine needles, serving as the primary organ for photosynthesis and nutrient absorption, facilitate the continuous transport of nutrients to all plant organs through photosynthesis. The functional traits of pine needles exhibit a close association with the photosynthetic efficiency of pine trees, thereby affecting resin yield. The selection of superior trees with high-resin yield (RY) for slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) faces difficulties due to low selection efficiency and a high false selection rate caused by the absence of reliable indirect selection traits. The objective of this study was to systematically investigate the relationships between slash pine needle functional traits and RY in different regions. Understanding the relationship between functional traits of pine needles and RY is essential for addressing the challenges mentioned above. There were positive correlations between RY and most morphological traits, except for leaf dry matter content (LDMC), which showed a negative correlation. Moreover, low-resin yield trees exhibited lower values for most morphological variables, except for LDMC. High-yield trees exhibited higher stomata number per mm2 (STN), larger stomata diameter (STD) and size (STS), and stomata area per mm2 (STA) across all periods and sites when compared with low-yield individuals. Chloroplast pigment component analysis revealed that high yielders exhibited higher levels of chloroplast a (CHL a) and chloroplast a+b (CHL a+b) compared to low yielders, and positive correlations were found between resin yield and CHL a, chloroplast b (CHL b), and CHL a+b. Higher nutrient contents were observed in high resin yield individuals, and positive correlations were found between resin yield and most nutrients, except for potassium (K). Different needle functional traits exhibited varying periodic patterns of resin production. Most needle functional traits could be useful criteria for evaluating resin production in slash pine breeding programs, which could improve the efficiency of breeding, shorten the breeding cycle, and accelerate the breeding process. • Correlations between functional traits and resin yield aid slash pine breeding. • Higher morphological and stomatal trait values are observed in high yielders. • Certain chloroplast pigments positively impact resin yield. • Nutrient contents correlate with resin yield, highlighting their importance. • Periodic patterns of resin production vary with needle functional traits. A Gymnodinium-like dinoflagellate, Kirithra sigma sp. nov., was isolated from Jiaozhou Bay, China, and the southern coast of Korea, and examined by light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. Pigment composition and nuclear-encoded partial large subunit ribosomal RNA (LSU rRNA) gene were determined. Cells were oval-shaped (26.4‒36.4 μm long and 17.7‒27.2 μm wide), with a conical epicone and hemispherical hypocone. Its cingulum and sulcus were deep and wide. The cingulum encircled the cell completely, its ends slightly overlapping and displaced one to two cingular widths; the sulcus and sulcal extension formed a sigmoid curve. The anterior sulcal extension contacted the apical structure complex (ASC). The ASC formed a complete circle, consisting of three parallel series of vesicles, and the amphiesmal vesicles within ASC were arranged with one central vesicle (sometimes two) encircled by approximately three rows of polygonal amphiesmal vesicles. Polygonal amphiesmal vesicles of different sizes covered the whole cell surface. The subspherical nucleus was located in the hypocone. Pigment analysis showed that peridinin was the main accessory pigment. The present species is morphologically similar to Kirithra asteri but differs in numbers and rows of amphiesmal vesicles within the ASC, absence of ventral pore, and a sigmoid curve formed by the sulcus and sulcal extension. The partial LSU rRNA gene sequence (c. 1400 bases) of K. sigma differed by c. 5.3% from that of K. asteri. Molecular phylogeny revealed that K. sigma formed an independent sister clade to K. asteri, indicating they are congeneric but different species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY: A strain of Pseliodinium pirum was isolated from Jiaozhou Bay, China, identified based on a recently emended classification, and further characterized for its morphology using light, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy, and phylogeny based on SSU and partial LSU rDNA sequences. The pigment composition, life history, and potential effects on aquatic animals were also examined. We observed the typical characteristics of Ceratoperidiniaceae, in which its apical structure complex (ASC) formed a circular loop, and the ASC of our isolate comprised four to five rows of vesicles, and connected with sulcal intrusion. Epifluorescence and transmission electron microscopy revealed a bean‐shaped, centrally located nucleus, with at least 76 chromosomes. Numerous rod‐shaped chloroplasts were in connection to the irregularly shaped pyrenoids. Pigment analysis showed that peridinin was the most abundant among all carotenoids and other pigments. Phylogenetic analyses using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference indicated that our isolate is conspecific with the entity Cochlodinium cf. helix (accession No. KF245459), but different from Ceratoperidinium, Kirithra, and other unidentified species of the family Ceratoperidiniaceae. Pseliodinium pirum could produce sexual, thin‐walled cyst, with subspherical and spherical shape and smooth surface (without spines or rough projections). The cyst could germinate within 3 days. Bioassays did not show adverse effects of P. pirum on the finfish Oryzias melastigma and the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, indicating it may not be a harmful species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The application of micro-Raman spectroscopy (μ-RS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) to the research of pigments collected from Statues of Feixiange Cliff No. 67 and No. 69 niche of Tang Dynasty in China is reported. Five kinds of pigments were found in the experimental data, including black (carbon), white (gypsum+quartz), blue (lapis lazuli) and green (Paris green+Barium sulphate). After synthesized in 1814, Paris green was reported for a large import as a light and bright green pigment to paint architectures in China from the late 19th century. The analyzed blue pigment demonstrated the similar Raman spectra to the Lâjvardina blue glazed ceramics, which indicated lapis lazuli was an artificial product. This confirmed the painting of Feixiange Cliff in the early Republic of China as the historical record, and also reveals that some pigments were imported from abroad. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Speciality chemicals group Lanxess is responding to the high level of demand for iron oxide pigments by strengthening its production network in China. The company is adding a mixing and milling plant at the site of its new production facility for iron oxide red pigments in Ningbo, which is still under construction [ ADPO , March & September 2013].
