A marriage of convenience has been defined as a reciprocal relationship between a gay man and a lesbian that provides a way to cope with social, cultural, family, and political stress, but this definition may be oversimplified in explaining this type of reciprocal relationship in a guanxi (the system of social networks and influential relationships that facilitate business and other dealings) society such as China. Such relationships are undergoing a process of development and change rather than remaining stable in Chinese guanxi society. This paper explores the nature and process of the development of marriages of convenience between gay men and lesbians in China. The data were collected and analyzed according to the grounded theory method. A theoretical sampling strategy was employed, and a sample of 15 people involved in so‐called marriages of convenience was recruited from gay and lesbian communities in China. In our research, we found that the marriage relationships documented in this study included four stages: (1) men dang hu dui (being matched for marriage), (2) partnership, (3) friendship, and (4) kinship. Building a suitable relationship in a marriage of convenience can help gay men and lesbians meet social expectations while simultaneously retaining a degree of autonomy for their own homosexual identities. Maintaining and developing guanxi is a basic method of conflict resolution in Chinese society. Meanwhile, the ambiguity of the relationship within a marriage of convenience may cause conflict in these marriages. Treatment modalities are recommended to reorganize the system structuring these marriages and clarify ambiguous family boundaries by redefining who is in the family unit and his and her associated roles and responsibilities in the marriage of convenience. We conclude that more research is warranted to investigate how family therapy can be adapted for Chinese gay and lesbian individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional culture, diplomatic practice and major changes in the world situation are important factors affecting the development of international relations theory. The practice of BRI embodies not only the general rule, but also some new concepts, models and approaches of international cooperation, many of which are ignored or cannot be explained by the traditional western theories of international cooperation. The practice of BRI emphasizes the equal, open, inclusive, procedural and long-term nature of cooperation, and adheres to the principles of mutually beneficial cooperation and common development. It goes beyond simple institutional cooperation, homogeneous cooperation and interest cooperation from the lens of western theories, and brings new elements for the development and innovation of international cooperation theories. Theoretical generalization of the BRI practice can highlight China’s diplomatic practice while elevating China’s diplomatic practice to a theoretical level, which is also an important way to transform Chinese practice into universal knowledge of the world. This paper describes a reflective space created between two Singaporean Chinese systemic psychotherapists and a British Chinese family – the Chans. The family attended the Marlborough Cultural Therapy Centre (MCTC) in London and was given two separate culture‐specific systemic treatments by different therapists, which were reflected upon collaboratively with the Chans. A brief literature review of British Chinese and mental health, culture and reflexivity is described. The authors discuss clinical implications including the impact of British Chinese cultures and the effect of mental health issues on the family. The process and outcomes of the treatment are explained using the frame of reflexivity. Clinical implications discussed include the impact of British Chinese cultures and the effects of schizophrenia and anxiety on the family. The paper explores the impact of the dissociated feminine principle resulting from the trauma of cultural displacement in a young Chinese woman keen to embrace a modern Western identity. A case study illustrates the outcome of the client both consciously and unconsciously rejecting the traditional stereotypical Chinese feminine identity and instead embracing the distorted, yet seductive, image of the Western (Caucasian) woman as independent, intellectual and confident. Her defensive denial of the traditional feminine was dealt with by intellectualising both personal and professional relationships. Then, unconsciously, the dissociated traditional feminine was projected into a separate aspect of her identity that held the traumatised feelings. The intellectualisation was eventually understood as being a necessary defence to cope with the cultural as well as geographical dislocation trauma. And with this realisation a space was created to accept and integrate the denied feminine-in a literal as well as a symbolic manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective is to compare the perception of the importance of Chinese cultural values by Chinese entrepreneurs in Malaysia and Taiwan. A questionnaire that included demographic data and a survey of Chinese values was distributed by mail to Chinese entrepreneurs in Malaysia and Taiwan. A total of 95 questionnaires from Malaysia and 70 from Taiwan were returned. The results showed that perceptions of the importance of Chinese values are quite similar among Chinese entrepreneurs in Malaysia and Taiwan, and that some differences might be explained by social context. Overall, Chinese entrepreneurs in Malaysia perceived Chinese values to be more important than did Chinese entrepreneurs in Taiwan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of cultural values on consumer behavior is well documented in tourism studies, yet limited research is reported on the link between cultural values and hotel ratings. In Chinese culture, 'face' prevails in every aspect of interpersonal relationship and hinders aggressive behaviors in public, whereas the American society values decision making based on honesty and independence more than what is derived from giving face. The difference in this cultural value is likely to be a critical component of idiosyncratic ratings by companies from different cultural backgrounds. This study compares the ratings on a hotel guide published by the Chinese government and one Chinese online and three U.S. online distribution channels. Based on four a priori comparisons of ratings among the five channels, the hotel ratings on the Chinese sources are considerably higher than those on the U.S. channels, which can be attributed to the unique value of 'giving face' in Chinese culture.
