Four bacterial blight (BB) resistance genes, Xa7, Xa21, Xa22 and Xa23, were introgressed into an elite hybrid rice restorer line Huahui 1035, by marker-assisted selection (MAS). Ten promising BB resistant lines identified by MAS approach in Huahui 1035 restorer background and their respective F hybrids with a cytoplasmic male sterile line i.e. Jinke 1A, three BB resistant gene donors and their recurrent parent were evaluated for BB resistance by inoculating them with eleven representative races of Xanthomonas oryzae pv . oryzae ( Xoo) in China. Further, the ten marker assisted selection of BB (MAS-BB) resistant restorer lines and their F hybrids were also characterized for agro-morphological traits and grain yield. Results revealed that restorer lines with Xa23 introgression i.e. HBQ809 and HBQ810 were found to be resistant to all eleven Chinese representative Xoo races, showing broad spectrum resistance to BB. However, the lines possessing Xa7 or Xa7+ Xa21 were resistant to ten out of eleven Xoo races. While restorer lines with Xa21 were resistant to nine out of eleven Xoo races. Interestingly, the F hybrids with Xa23, Xa7 or Xa7+ Xa21 were resistant to two severe epidemic Xoo races of China. Restorer lines i.e. HBQ807 and HBQ808 possessing Xa22 were only resistant to six or five out of inoculated eleven Xoo races. Lesion length comparisons between restorer lines and their F hybrids for the above four BB resistance genes showed them to be dominant in heterozygote genotype. Detailed field mapping combined with a petrologic and geochemical investigation of the Zedong terrane within the Yarlung Tsangpo suture zone provides insights to the evolution of now mostly subducted portions of Tethys during the Late Jurassic. The terrane is dominated by volcanic rocks of shoshonitic affinity, which were erupted in a submarine oceanic island arc setting. The volcanic island arc was built on a basement of oceanic crust, and the shoshonites locally overlie a thin section of pillowed island arc tholeiites and red ribbon-bedded radiolarian cherts. Geochemistry of the shoshonites suggests that their development occurred in a setting analogous to that of Late Miocene to Early Pliocene Fiji and was associated with an arc rifting. We speculate that this event may have been a far-field response to developments associated with Gondwana breakup. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil pollution with heavy metals (HMs) has become a world environmental problem. This study focuses on surface soil contamination with Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb, Fe, and Al, their sources, and potential hazards along the basin of River Swat, Pakistan. The average concentrations (mg/kg) of HMs were the most abundant for Al (24,730.19) followed by Fe (22,419.41) > Mn (386.78) > Zn (57.75) > Cr (38.07) > Ni (32.46) > Cu (23.43) > Pb (19.59) > Co (10.77) > Cd (3.18) > Hg (0.12). The concentrations of Cr and Mn in 5.45% each, Co in 10.90%, Zn in 27.27%, Cu in 36.36%, Ni in 41.81%, and Hg in 92.72% of the total soil samples exceeded their respective background values. The geostatistical approaches determined the distribution patterns of HM pollution along the basin, whereas the statistics of principal component analysis exposed the likely sources of HM contamination in the area. Pollution indices evaluated the overall HM distribution and pollution status in the area. Contamination factor showed a high degree of HM contamination in 82% of the total sampling sites, while the geo-accumulation index designated low to moderate contamination with Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Hg, and Pb, and moderate to extreme contamination with Cd, Fe, and Al. The trend of ecological toxicity showed potential ups and downs along with the sites from low to considerable hazard (< 95 < PEHI < 190), whereas the human carcinogenic hazard was within the USEPA acceptable limits (1 × 10 -7 -1 × 10 -4 ), but the non-carcinogenic hazard was higher than the threshold (HI > 1) for children because they are more exposed than adults., (© 2022. The present study was conducted to investigate the concentrations of potential toxic metals (PTMs) in agricultural soil (n = 25) and their bioaccumulation in wheat crop (n = 25) collected from alongside the Kurram River, Pakistan. The highest concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in soil samples were 0.16, 19.5, 14.7, 46.5, 13.5, 14.5, 14.0, and 19.7 mg kg -1 , respectively. In the edible tissues of cultivated wheat crop, the highest concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 0.15, 10.00, 8.75, 22.25, 11.00, 11.25, 10.50, and 7.50 mg kg -1 , respectively. The selected PTM concentrations in soil samples were observed within their respective permissible limits set by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) China, while in wheat crops, the Cr and Pb concentrations were above the permissible limits of both FAO and SEPA China. The results showed that the orders of PTMs were Fe > Zn > Cr > Cu > Ni > Pb > Mn in soil and Fe > Ni > Mn > Pb > Cr > Cu > Zn in wheat. The highest PTM concentrations were reported in the sample collected near dumping sites. The results of different soil pollution indices including geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), and enrichment factor (EF) indicated that the soil of the study area was moderately to severely contaminated. The ADI values of wheat crops were less than 1, while the HQ varied among different PTMs with the highest value of 2.118 for Pb, and the lowest for Zn (0.007). The results indicated that anthropogenic intervention has made a substantial contribution to soil contamination with PTMs and subsequent uptake by wheat, which may exert potential human health risk.

Background: Performing sublobar resection for early stage non-small cell lung carcinoma is becoming increasingly popular, with studies suggesting equivalent outcomes to lobectomy when sufficient lymph node sampling is performed. Furthermore, there has been a move to minimally invasive thoracic surgery facilitating enhanced recovery and reduced postoperative morbidity. The subxiphoid video-assisted thoracic surgery (SVATS) approach is a novel technique that is becoming increasingly popular, with evidence of reduced postoperative pain. Here, we report experience and the technique of performing segmentectomy by the uniportal SVATS approach., Methods: The uniportal SVATS approach was used to perform all possible segmentectomies. Specific instruments were designed to facilitate performing surgery through this approach, and the operative technique is described and demonstrated with videos., Results: Between September 2014 and April 2017, 242 segmentectomies were performed by uniportal SVATS. Twenty-nine of the patients underwent bilateral procedures. The mean duration of surgery was 2.14 ± 0.78 hours. Lymph node stations were accessible, and a mean of 4.00 ± 1.00 lymph node stations and 10.64 ± 3.38 lymph nodes were sampled. The mean postoperative hospital length of stay was 4.67 ± 9.54 days. Only 4 cases required conversion to thoracotomy, and 3 required conversion to full lobectomy. There were no perioperative deaths, with 30-day survival of 100%., Conclusions: This report demonstrates that the uniportal SVATS approach can be safely and effectively utilized to perform pulmonary segmentectomies. Effect of genetic background on detection of quantitative trait locus (QTL) governing salinity tolerance (ST) was studied using two sets of reciprocal introgression lines (ILs) derived from a cross between a moderately salinity tolerant japonica variety, Xiushui09 from China, and a drought tolerant but salinity susceptible indica breeding line, IR2061-520-6-9 from the Philippines. Salt toxicity symptoms (SST) on leaves, days to seedling survival (DSS), and sodium and potassium uptake by shoots were measured under salinity stress of 140 mmol/L of NaCl. A total of 47 QTLs, including 26 main-effect QTLs (M-QTLs) and 21 epistatic QTLs (E-QTLs), were identified from the two sets of reciprocal ILs. Among the 26 M-QTLs, only four (15.4%) were shared in the reciprocal backgrounds while no shared E-QTLs were detected, indicating that ST QTLs, especially E-QTLs, were very specific to the genetic background. Further, 78.6% of the M-QTLs for SST and DSS identified in the reciprocal ILs were also detected in the recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from the same cross, which clearly brings out the background effect on ST QTL detection and its utilization in ST breeding. The detection of ILs with various levels of pyramiding of nonallelic M-QTL alleles for ST from Xiushui09 into IR2061-520-6-9 allowed us to further improve the ST in rice.
