To further clarify the optimal target layer in the horizontal section of Wufeng–Longmaxi shale, we selected 126 shale samples from the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations (Long111 to Long114 and Long12 submember) as the primary study objects from the perspective of the microscopic pore structure. We conducted this experimental study on the pore structure of shale samples according to various methods, including low-temperature nitrogen adsorption and carbon dioxide adsorption experiments, atomic force microscopy, and nano-computed tomography scanning. We calculated the fractal dimensions of samples at different horizons through the study of the characteristics of adsorption–desorption isotherms using the Frenkel–Halsey–Hill model. These results indicated that the shale samples had a complex pore structure (with a higher fractal dimension). The fractal dimensions were positively correlated with the specific surface area and total organic carbon content of the shale samples, weakly positively correlated with the micropore pore volume, and negatively correlated with the average pore radius. The samples from the Wufeng Formation and the Long111 and Long112 submembers had large fractal dimensions, whereas the samples from Long12 had the smallest fractal dimension. The pores of the shale samples generally were type H2/3, which were characterized by wedge, tabular, and ink-bottle shapes. Only three H3-type pore samples corresponded to the three smallest fractal dimension values. The Wufeng Formation's Long 111 and Long 112 layers should be the target layers for horizontal wells. In this study, we identified the optimal target layer of the horizontal shale profile of Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation, which holds great significance for shale oil and gas development in this formation. The effects of chitosan-based coatings on the postharvest performance Chinese cherry during a twenty days storage period were investigated. The chitosan-based coatings effectively delayed postharvest ripening parameters including weight loss, decay rate, firmness, soluble solid content (SSC) and titratable acidity (TA). The most effective treatment was a combined chitosan and nano-SiOx coating, which led to 51% less weight loss, 32% less decay rate, 57% more firmness, and less SSC and TA content changes than the control group. This combined coating also maintained a higher content of sodium carbonate-soluble pectin (SSP), and inhibited pectin chain degradation. Qualitative and quantitative analysis revealed that the firmness of fruit was closely related to nanostructural morphologies and SSP chain width. In addition, modifications of SSP were correlated with fruit softening, especially SSP polymers and branched chains. These results demonstrate the effect of chitosan and nano-SiOx coating on extending the shelf life of Chinese cherries during postharvest storage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China has a large area of inland saline-alkali land, equivalent to 40% of the total cultivated land in the country. The principal features of these lands are high salt content, high pH, and poor soil structure with low water infiltration and poor drainage. These conditions effectively prevent the exploitation of such land for agriculture. In this study, we have compared 17 soil conditioning agents for their abilities to promote seed germination and growth under both laboratory and field conditions. One of these, Hydrolyzed Polymaleic Anhydride (HPMA), was identified as a highly effective agent for soil improvement. Laboratory germination experiments and laboratory and field cultivation of a variety of plants both showed that addition of HPMA could significantly increase the germination percentage and plant growth rate. Distinct from other Ca-carrier agents such as gypsum, HPMA increases the dissolution of CaCO, which is abundant in the calcareous saline-alkali soils. This allows Ca in soil solution to displace the over-abundant Na in the soil colloids. This process greatly improves soil properties such as the bulk density, which decreased, and the capillary soil rise height of water and soil water infiltration rate, which increased. Direct SEM and AFM imagery showed flocculent soil precipitation (soil aggregates) after HPMA addition, and a looser structure of those aggregates. The addition of HPMA also reduced the soil pH and EC. These changes in soil chemical and physical properties are a likely explanation for the soil improvement effected by HPMA. The high content of insoluble CaCO in saline-alkali land such as that in northeastern China (up to 13%) favors the further exploration of HPMA as an ameliorative agent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The montmorillonite sample from Heping, China had been studied by chemical analysis, XRD, IR, AFM and MAS NMR. The results showed that acid concentration had much influence on surface structure of montmorillonite. When the acid concentration reached 2M, the Q3Si structure in silica–oxygen tetrahedron recombined, some Q3Si structure in montmorillonite transformed to distortion Q3Si structure and Q4Si structure. However, the structure of Al had no changes, according with the observation results of atomic force microscope. The Brønsted acid site of montmorillonite increases with the accretion of the concentration of acid activation, while oversize concentration of acid activation will decrease the surface site of montmorillonite. The adverse effects of acidic ultrafine particles (AUFPs) have been widely recognized in scientific communities. However, a handful of studies successfully acquired the concentrations of AUFPs in the atmosphere. To explore the AUFPs pollution, six extensive measurements were for the first time conducted in the roadside, urban and rural areas in Hong Kong, and the urban area in Shanghai between 2017 and 2020. The concentrations of AUFPs and UFPs, and the proportions of AUFPs in UFPs were obtained. The concentration of UFPs was the highest at the roadside site, followed by the urban site and the rural site, while the proportion of AUFPs in UFPs showed a contrary trend. The difference, on one hand, indicated the potential transformation of AUFPs from non-acidic UFPs during the transport and aging of air masses, and on the other hand, suggested the minor contribution of anthropogenic sources to the emission of AUFPs. In addition, the urban area in Hong Kong suffered from heavier pollution of UFPs and AUFPs than that in Shanghai. As for size distribution, the proportion of AUFPs in UFPs peaked in the size range of 35-50 nm and 50-75 nm in roadside and urban area, respectively. In rural area, the peak was observed in the size range of 5-10 nm, which might indicate the stimulation of new particle formation with the AUFPs as seeds. Furthermore, in the urban areas of Hong Kong and Shanghai, no significant difference was found for the geometric mean diameters of UFPs and AUFPs (p > 0.05). At last, the sulfuric acid proxy was positively correlated with the proportions of AUFPs in UFPs but not well correlated with the AUFPs levels. The results suggested the important roles of interaction between sulfuric acid vapor and non-acidic UFPs in AUFPs formation. China's highway asphalt pavement has entered the stage of major repair, and improving the utilization rate of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) is the main issue. The key link affecting the performance of recycled asphalt mixtures is the regeneration of aged asphalt, and the effect of the regenerant dosing on the high-temperature performance and viscosity of aged asphalt is the main content to be studied in this research. The aging behavior of asphalt seriously affects the roadworthiness of asphalt mixtures. In this study, we investigated the effect of changes in the microscopic properties of the aged asphalt on its viscosity properties during regeneration using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) as well as Brinell viscosity tests. This study simulated asphalt aging by the RTFOT test, and then we obtained an aged asphalt with a needle penetration of 30. We prepared different regenerated asphalts by adding regeneration agent with doses of 2%, 4%, and 6% to the aged asphalt. The results showed that the regeneration agent could effectively reduce the viscosity of the aged asphalt, which can play a positive role in improving the construction and ease of the aged asphalt. Rejuvenation agents affected the aging asphalt sulfoxide and carbon group indices. Moreover, rejuvenation agents can also significantly reduce the intensities of their characteristic functional group indices. The results of the AFM test showed that the increase in the dose of regeneration agent increased the number of the asphalt bee-like structures and decreased the area of individual bee-like structures. The results of the GPC test were consistent with the results of the AFM test, and the increase in the dose of regeneration agent reduced the asphalt macromolecule content. The viscosity properties and microstructure of the aged asphalt changed positively after the addition of the regeneration agent, indicating that the regeneration agent had a degrading and diluting effect on macromolecules.
