Background and aims: Paddy management results in frequent redox cycles of the soil and thus changes in the terrestrial iron (Fe) cycle. We intended to test that the increasing duration of paddy management and the increasing frequency of soil redox cycles leave their fingerprint on Fe isotope composition of paddy systems, which could subsequently be used to deduce the origin of rice plants as related to the extent of past soil paddy management. Methods: We sampled soil and rice plants of a paddy chronosequence in China with rice cultivation history up to 2000 years and determined the changes of soil Fe pools and Fe isotope composition of the soil and rice plants. Results: Prolonged paddy management reduced Fe concentrations in submerged topsoil leading to an enrichment of heavy Fe isotopes, with the δ56Fe values 0.12‰ heavier than the parent material after 2000 years. Particularly, Fe oxides were lost quickly, while exchangeable and organic-associated Fe continuously accumulated during paddy management and played an increasing role in the plant-available Fe pool in the topsoil. The Fe content in rice also increased with paddy age, while its Fe isotope composition did not reflect that of paddy soil but resembled that of the Fe plaques on the roots. Conclusion: Prolonged rice cropping altered the biological contribution in the terrestrial Fe cycle. However, while soil Fe pools that are closely linked with biological activities were affected rather quickly, the changes in the whole soil Fe system were detectable only after a millennium of paddy management. In regions with high livestock densities, the usage of antibiotics and metals for veterinary purposes or as growth promoters poses a risk in manured soils. We investigated to which degree the concentrations and depth distributions of Cu, Zn, Cr and As could be used as a tracer to discover contaminations with sulfonamides, tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones. Besides, we estimated the potential vertical translocation of antibiotics and compared the results to measured data. In the peri-urban region of Beijing, China, soil was sampled from agricultural fields and a dry riverbed contaminated by organic waste disposal. The antibiotic concentrations reached 110 μg kg sulfamethazine, 111 μg kg chlortetracycline and 62 μg kg enrofloxacin in the topsoil of agricultural fields. Intriguingly, total concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cr and As were smaller than 65, 130, 36 and 10 mg kg in surface soil, respectively, therewith fulfilling Chinese quality standards. Correlations between sulfamethazine concentrations and Cu or Zn suggest that in regions with high manure applications, one might use the frequently existing monitoring data for metals to identify potential pollution hotspots for antibiotics in topsoils. In the subsoils, we found sulfamethazine down to ≥2 m depth on agricultural sites and down to ≥4 m depth in the riverbed. As no translocation of metals was observed, subsoil antibiotic contamination could not be predicted from metal data. Nevertheless, sulfonamide stocks in the subsoil could be estimated with an accuracy of 35-200 % from fertilisation data and potential leaching rates. While this may not be sufficient for precise prediction of antibiotic exposure, it may very well be useful for the pre-identification of risk hotspots for subsequent in-depth assessment studies. More than 50% of the world's population feeds on rice. Soils used for rice production are mostly managed under submerged conditions (paddy soils). This management, which favors carbon sequestration, potentially decouples surface from subsurface carbon cycling. The objective of this study was to elucidate the long-term rates of carbon accrual in surface and subsurface soil horizons relative to those of soils under nonpaddy management. We assessed changes in total soil organic as well as of inorganic carbon stocks along a 2000-year chronosequence of soils under paddy and adjacent nonpaddy management in the Yangtze delta, China. The initial organic carbon accumulation phase lasts much longer and is more intensive than previously assumed, e.g., by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC). Paddy topsoils accumulated 170-178 kg organic carbon ha−1 a−1 in the first 300 years; subsoils lost 29-84 kg organic carbon ha−1 a−1 during this period of time. Subsoil carbon losses were largest during the first 50 years after land embankment and again large beyond 700 years of cultivation, due to inorganic carbonate weathering and the lack of organic carbon replenishment. Carbon losses in subsoils may therefore offset soil carbon gains or losses in the surface soils. Abstract: Veterinary antibiotics reach the soil environment by manure application, where they accumulate or are prone to vertical translocation. We assumed that a high pH value at slightly calcareous soil properties should retain tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones even at high manure loads, whereas it should facilitate leaching of sulfonamides. Hence, we investigated the transport of manure-added antibiotics in a soil developed from calcareous parent material on a farm in peri-urban Beijing, China. Leachate was collected from zero-tension samplers, installed at 40cm depth under undisturbed soil, which was treated according to (i) routine farm practice and (ii) worst-case conditions (high antibiotic concentrations, irrigation imitating heavy rainfall). Additionally, the soil depth distribution of pharmaceuticals at the end of the leaching experiment was analysed. Under routine farm practice, sulfamethazine was repeatedly detected in the leachate with a maximum concentration of 0.12μgL−1. All applied substances were still detected in soil after 53days, suggesting that there was no overall rapid and complete dissipation. Worst-case conditions enhanced vertical translocation; all leachate samples contained sulfonamides (up to 653μgL−1 sulfamethazine), and even tetracyclines were found in the leachate once, with doxycycline reaching the highest concentration (0.19μgL−1). The concentrated simultaneous occurrence of sulfonamides with the bromide tracer in leachate samples pointed to preferential flow as underlying transport process. The high pH values did not prevent the single leaching event for tetracyclines and hardly affected overall leaching behaviour. The applied fluoroquinolones were not significantly translocated below 4cm depth, irrespective of irrigation and high manure addition. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
