In 2014, the Chinese central government required implementing natural resource and asset accountability audit for local officials to promote environmental governance. From the perspective of government subsidy allocation, this paper examines whether and how the new government audit policy influences the strategy of local governments to high-polluting firms. We adopt a multi-period difference-in-difference research design and find that after the policy implementation, local officials pay more attention to local ecological performance, thus, reducing the government subsidies to high-polluting enterprises. They also reduce support for high-polluting by reducing tax incentives. These findings document that the implementation of government audit policy weakens the collusion between local officials and high-polluting firms, which enriches the intercross investigation between government audit and environmental governance. SYNOPSIS: In this study, we propose a reciprocal rent-seeking game between politicians and individual auditors with political connections and examine how these auditors' political connections influence their audit quality. Using hand-collected data from China between 2008 and 2013, we find that politically connected auditors have a significantly lower tendency to issue modified audit opinions (MAOs). We also find that politicians' career prospects are significantly adversely influenced by MAOs being issued in their jurisdictions, while connected auditors charge higher audit fees, acquire larger market share, and have a lower chance of encountering regulatory sanctions. Further evidence suggests that politically connected auditors tend to issue less accurate audit opinions, reduce client firms' earnings response coefficients (ERCs), and increase client firms' capital costs. Collectively, our study suggests that individual auditors' political connections facilitate the reciprocal rent-seeking activities between them and politicians, which ultimately undermines audit quality. Background: Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a type of encephalopathy mediated by an antigenic immune response in the central nervous system. Most research related to autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is focused on early diagnosis, treatment and prognosis analysis; there has been little research conducted on the characteristics of immune function, and the relationship between immune function and prognoses of patients with autoimmune encephalitis needs to be studied further. Methods: A total of 33 children with autoimmune encephalitis were identified through the clinic database and inpatient consults at Tianjin Children's Hospital from January 2013 to January 2021. Based on the one-year follow-up and the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) prognosis score, they were divided into a good prognosis group and a poor prognosis group. The immune function characteristics of the two groups of children with autoimmune encephalitis (AE) were compared using Spearman correlation to analyse the mRS score and immune function indicators (IgA, IgG, IgM, CD4, CD8, CD4/CD8), and binary logistic regression was used to analyse the independent risk factors of the prognoses in patients with autoimmune encephalitis (AE). Results: The differences in abnormal mental disorders and limb dyskinesia, cognitive impairment, onset types, modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores at admission, and immune function status during remission between the two groups were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a close correlation between modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores and the immune function index CD4/CD8 in children with autoimmune encephalitis (AE) when they are admitted to the hospital. A young age, disturbance of consciousness, limb dyskinesia, abnormal immune function in remission and anti-NMDAR encephalitis are risk factors for poor prognoses in children with autoimmune encephalitis (AE). We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the associations between domestic pets and respiratory health in children. We randomly recruited 11,611 school children from Zhongshan, a southern city in China. Information about the respiratory symptoms and disease history of the recruited children, the status of domestic pets, and other related risk factors were collected from March to July 2016. We identified cat-keeping at home increases the risk of persistent cough (OR, 1.77; 95%CI, 1.03–3.05); poultry-keeping at home increases the risk of current asthma (OR, 3.87; 95%CI, 1.08–13.92) and allergic rhinitis (OR, 1.84; 95%CI, 1.01–3.37); sleeping with pets increases the risk of persistent phlegm (OR, 5.04; 95%CI, 1.05–24.28), doctor-diagnosed asthma (OR, 3.35; 95%CI, 1.31–8.57) and current asthma (OR, 4.94; 95%CI, 1.05–23.31) in children. Cat-keeping and molds on the wall of the house had the multiplicative and additive interaction in doctor-diagnosed asthma. Assessing the ecotoxicity of pharmaceuticals is of urgent need due to the recognition of their possible adverse effects on nontarget organisms in the aquatic environment. The reality of ecotoxicity data scarcity promotes the development and application of quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) models. In the present study, we aimed to clarify whether a QSAR model of ecotoxicity specifically for pharmaceuticals is needed considering that pharmaceuticals are a class of chemicals with complex structures, multiple functional groups, and reactive properties. To this end, we conducted a performance comparison of two previously developed and validated QSAR models specifically for pharmaceuticals with the commonly used narcosis toxicity prediction model, i.e., Ecological Structure Activity Relationship (ECOSAR), using a subset of pharmaceuticals produced in China that had not been included in the training datasets of QSAR models under consideration. A variety of statistical measures demonstrated that the pharmaceutical specific model outperformed ECOSAR, indicating the necessity of developing a specific QSAR model of ecotoxicity for the active pharmaceutical contaminants. ECOSAR, which was generally used to predict the baseline or the minimum toxicity of a compound, generally underestimated the ecotoxicity of the analyzed pharmaceuticals. This could possibly be because some pharmaceuticals can react through specific modes of action. Nonetheless, it should be noted that 95% prediction intervals spread over approximately four orders of magnitude for both tested QSAR models specifically for pharmaceuticals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiple exopolysaccharides (EPSs) have been isolated from various organisms in extreme environments and have yielded a variety of activities. The present study evaluated the immunomodulatory capabilities of an EPS (termed PH-EPS) derived from the fungus Paecilomyces lilacinus PH0016, which was isolated from a tropical and hyperhaline environment in southern China. The macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line was used to investigate the mechanism of PH-EPS-induced macrophage activation. The results indicated that RAW 264.7 macrophages were activated by PH-EPS, in an effect slightly inferior to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), as evidenced by secretion of interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and nitric oxide (NO), and by significantly increased phagocytosis in the cells treated with PH-EPS. Nuclear factor (NF)-κB p65 was significantly translocated into the nucleus in the PH-EPS-treated cells. In addition, expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and IκB-α degradation were enhanced in PH-EPS-treated cells. The phosphorylation levels of p38, JNK and ERK were also significantly increased in the PH-EPS-treated cells. Furthermore, IL-1β and TNF-α production was markedly decreased in PH-EPS-treated cells when the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways were blocked by the inhibitor Dectin-1 and by antibodies against Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). The present results indicated that PH-EPS from Paecilomyces lilacinus possessed the capability of activating RAW 264.7 cells via the TLR4/NF-κB/MAPKs signaling pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Based on long-term monitoring conducted in Chang-ning county, a pilot site of the ‘Grain for Green Program’ (GFGP), an integrated emergy and economic method was applied to evaluate the dynamic ecological-economic performance of 3 kinds of bamboo systems planted on sloping farmland. The results confirmed the positive effects of all 3 kinds of bamboo systems on water conservation and soil erosion control. The benefits gained progressively increased during the first 8 years after conversion, going from 4639 to 16127 EMyuan/ha/yr on average. All three bamboo plantations were much more sustainable than common agricultural crops planted on sloping land (CP) on both the short and long-term scales with their Emergy Sustainability Index (ESI) and Emergy Index for Sustainable Development (EISD), respectively, being 14.07–325.71 and 80.35–265.80 times that of CP. However, all 3 bamboo plantations had a Net Economic Benefit (NEB) less than that of CP during the first 8 years after conversion. Even with the government-mandated ecological compensation applied, the annual NEB EC s of the Bambusa rigida (BR) and Phyllostachys pubescense (PP) plantations were, respectively, 3922.03 and 7422.77 yuan/ha/yr lower than the NEB of CP. Emergy-based evaluation of ecosystem services provides an objective reference for applying ecological compensation in strategy-making, but it cannot wholly solve the economic viability problem faced by all bamboo plantations. Inter-planting annual herbs or edible fungus, such as Dictyophora echinovolvata, within bamboo forests, especially in young bamboo plantations, might be a direction for optimizing bamboo cultivation that would improve its economic viability. Neural tube defects (NTDs) are a complex trait associated with gene-environment interactions. Folic acid deficiency and planar cell polarity gene mutations account for some NTD cases; however, the etiology of NTDs is still little understood. In this study, in three Han Chinese NTD pedigrees (two with multiple affected children), with no information on folic acid deficiency or supplement, we examined genome-wide methylation profiles of each individual in these families. We further compared methylation status among cases and normal individuals within the pedigrees. A unique methylation pattern co-segregated with affected status: NTD cases had more hypermethylated than hypomethylated CpG islands; genes with different methylations clustered in pathways associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (ZEB2, SMAD6, and CDH23), folic acid/homocysteine metabolism (MTHFD1L), transcription/nuclear factors (HDAC4, HOXB7, SOX18), cell migration/motility/adhesion, insulin and cell growth, and neuron/axon development. Omge-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) exhibited significant effect in inhibiting various tumors. However, the mechanisms of its anticancer role have not been fully demonstrated. The declination of 5-methylcytosine (5 mC) was closely associated with poor prognosis of tumors. To explore whether omega-3 PUFAs influences on DNA methylation level in tumors, colorectal cancer (CRC) rat model were constructed using N-methyl phosphite nitrourea and omega-3 PUFAs were fed to part of the rats during tumor induction. The PUFAs contents in the rats of 3 experimental groups were measured using gas chromatography and 5 mC level were detected by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The results showed that tumor incidence in omega-3 treated rats was much lower than in CRC model rats, which confirmed significant antitumor role of omega-3 PUFAs. Six PUFA members categorized to omega-3 and omega-6 families were quantified and the ratio of omega-6/omega-3 PUFAs was remarkably lower in omega-3 PUFAs treatment group than in CRC model group. 5 mC content in omega-3 PUFAs treated rats was higher than in CRC model rats, suggesting omega-3 PUFAs promoted 5 mC synthesis. Therefore, omega-3 PUFAs probably inhibited tumor growth via regulating DNA methylation process, which provided a novel anticancer mechanism of omega-3 PUFAs from epigenetic view. Igneous intrusions in coal seams are found in 80 % of coal mines in the Huaibei coalfield, China, and coal and gas outburst accidents have occurred 11 times under a 120-m-thick sill in the Haizi mining field. The magma's heat had a significant controlling effect on coal seam gas occurrence. Based on theoretical analysis, experimental tests and site validation, we analyzed the temperature distribution following magma intrusion into coal measure strata and the variations in multiple physical parameters and adsorption/desorption characteristics between the underlying coal seams beneath the sill in the Haizi mining field and coal seams uninfluenced by magma intrusion in the adjacent Linhuan mining field. The research results show that the main factors controlling the temperature distribution of the magma and surrounding rocks in the cooling process include the cooling time and the thickness and initial temperature of the magmatic rock. As the distance from sill increases, the critical effective temperature and the duration of sustained high temperatures decrease. The sill in the Haizi mining field significantly promoted coal seam secondary hydrocarbon generation in the thermally affected area, which generated approximately 340 m/t of hydrocarbon. In the magma-affected area, the metamorphic grade, micropore volume, amount of gas adsorption, initial speed of gas desorption, and amount of desorption all increase. Fluid entrapment by sills usually causes the gas pressure and gas content of the underlying coal seams to increase. As a result, the outburst risks from coal seams increases as well. Deeply-buried carbonate-reservoirs from the Lower Triassic Feixianguan Formation in the Sichuan Basin of China host extensive natural gas resources. These reservoirs are predominantly found in oolitic shoals, with the reservoir quality of dolomitized zones being higher than that of undolomitized limestone counterparts. Here we present a combination of petrographic, isotopic, fluid inclusion, and quantitative porosity data in order to understand and predict the diagenetic processes that have impacted the reservoir quality of dolostones and limestones. The porosity of limestones has been reduced to ∼7.5% due to calcite cementation, whereas the porosity in oolitic dolostones is not cemented with calcite and typically has ∼23.5% porosity. Dolomitization and concurrent early-diagenetic gypsum growth played crucial roles on the development and preservation of high porosity in the oolitic dolostone, first by stabilizing the rock fabric to inhibit loss of porosity during burial, and secondly through the generation of new porosity by dissolution of carbonate and anhydrite. A negative shift of δ 18 O and salinity values (<3.5 wt. %) measured from fluid inclusions in diagenetic calcite cement in limestones suggest that diagenesis associated with meteoric water played a key role in destroying limestone reservoir quality. Early oil charge seems to have had a positive effect on carbonate reservoir quality in the dolostones, since oil emplacement inhibited calcite cementation. Subsequently, thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) occurred, predominantly in the dolostones, as shown by TSR calcite cement with highly negative δ 13 C values (∼−20‰ VPDB) and δ 18 O (∼−10‰ VPDB) together with elevated calcite precipitation temperatures (>110 °C). It is likely that TSR was responsible for the formation of enlarged dissolution vugs that increased porosity by ∼2% in dolostones due to: i) anhydrite dissolution, ii) production of significant amounts of water resulting in formation water undersaturated with respect to calcite and dolomite, iii) generation of H 2 S, and CO 2 , and the consequent reaction of H 2 S with the siderite (FeCO 3 ) component in calcite and dolomite. This study demonstrates the importance of diagenesis in the formation of deeply-buried, high-quality reservoirs in ooid-dominated grainstones influenced by the presence of evaporites. Although there is broad evidence for the value of peer support (PS) in preventing and managing diabetes and other chronic diseases, identifying approaches to stage, scale, and adapt PS interventions is a challenge. Community organization may provide a process for such adaptation of standardized PS and diabetes management to individual communities. This community organization approach was used to develop PS in 12 communities in Shanghai, China. Through a convergent mixed methods design, project records, semi-structured interviews, and an implementation assessment characterized processes of adaptation of standardized materials, examined the extent to which the program was implemented, and identified key success factors and challenges. Findings from both interviews and the implementation assessment indicated that communities adapted standardized intervention components to meet the needs of their communities and assumed responsibility for implementation of different components of the program based on their community's available capacity. Additionally, community innovations occurring as part of the project were reported and standardized for dissemination in future iterations of the program. Key success factors identified included cooperation and collaboration among varied partners within and across communities. Two challenges illustrate the resilience of the community organization model in response to COVID-19 and the need for further adaptation in rural communities. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the quality of care of diabetes in Shanghai, China. A total of 173 235 patients with type 2 diabetes in 2017 were included in the analysis. Profiles of risk factors and intermediate outcomes were determined. The patients had a mean age of 66.43 ± 8.12 (standard deviation (SD)) years and a mean diabetes duration of 7.95 ± 5.53 (SD) years. The percentage of patients who achieved the target level for HbA 1c (< 7.0%) was 48.6%. Patients who achieved the target levels for blood pressure (BP) < 130/80 mmHg and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c) < 2.6 mmol/L reached 17.5% and 34.0%, respectively. A total of 3.8% achieved all three target levels, and the value increased to 6.8% with an adaptation of the BP target level (< 140/90 mmHg) for those over 65 years. Multivariable analysis identified the factors associated with a great likelihood of achieving all three target levels: male, young age, short diabetes duration, low body mass index, macrovascular complications, no microvascular complications, prescribed with lipid-lowering medication, and no prescription of antihypertensive medication. In conclusion, nearly 50% and one-third of the patients with diabetes met the target levels for HbA 1c and LDL-c, respectively, with a low percentage achieving the BP target level. Identifying organizational settings for sustainable, scalable implementation of peer support (PS) is a challenge. Development, initial evaluation, and community expansion of PS for populations with diabetes staged in the context of the Shanghai Integration Model integrating primary and specialty care for diabetes. Development Phase with 9 Community Health Centers (CHCs) leading to Community Expansion Phase with additional 12 communities. Development Phase peer leaders (PLs) co-led meetings on diabetes management, led neighborhood activities, and followed up with individuals and families. Among 1,284 participants, changes in HbA1c, other clinical markers, and diabetes distress were significant (ps from 0.001 to 0.041), pronounced among those with elevated levels, for example, HbA1c reduction from 9.09% to 8.50% among those ≥8% at baseline (p < 0.001). Ratings of Implementation were associated with reduced HbA1c and diabetes distress and increased neighborhood support. In particular, linking with community resources and utilization of neighborhood Residential Committees were associated with improved HbA1c, indicating the value of PS programs including community resources. Thus, the Community Expansion Phase includes district- and community-level health staff, Community Self Management Groups, and Residential Committees along with CHCs in 12 communities, all of which have implemented activities during the first 6 months. PS programs are feasible and appear to add value among populations with diabetes in community settings such as Shanghai. The 70-year experience of China in fighting against non-communicable diseases (NCDs) can be classified into three distinct periods: 1) the disease-oriented strategy period (from 1950 to 1994); 2) the risk factor-focused strategy period (from 1995 to 2008); and 3) the social and policy priority strategy period (since 2009). A number of projects were successful and valuable experience and lessons were accumulated during the three periods. Due to the underestimation of the 'explosive' epidemic of NCDs, however, it took China quite a long time to find the right path to curb the upward trend in these diseases. In this commentary, the authors review the evolution of strategies and the healthcare service system, examine advances and challenges, and summarize experience and lessons in NCD control in China. In view of development, China's experience may have valuable implications for other low- and middle-income countries.

Background: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are birth defects of the brain, spine, or spinal cord invoked by the insufficient intake of folic acid in the early stages of pregnancy and have a complex etiology involving both genetic and environmental factors. So the study aimed to explore the association between alterations in maternal one-carbon metabolism and NTDs in the offspring., Methods: We conducted a case-control study to get a deeper insight into this association, as well as into the role of genetic polymorphisms. Plasma concentrations of folate, homocysteine (Hcy), S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH) and genotypes and alleles distributions of 52 SNPs in 8 genes were compared for 61 women with NTDs-affected offspring and 61 women with healthy ones., Results: There were significant differences between groups with regard to plasma folate, SAM, SAH and SAM/SAH levels. Logistic regression results revealed a significant association between maternal plasma folate level and risk of NTDs in the offspring. For MTHFD1 rs2236225 polymorphism, mothers having GA genotype and A allele exhibited an increased risk of NTDs in the offspring (OR = 2.600, 95%CI: 1.227-5.529; OR = 1.847, 95%CI: 1.047-3.259). For MTHFR rs1801133 polymorphism, mothers having TT and CT genotypes were more likely to affect NTDs in the offspring (OR = 4.105, 95%CI: 1.271-13.258; OR = 3.333, 95%CI: 1.068-10.400). Moreover, mothers carrying T allele had a higher risk of NTDs in the offspring (OR = 1.798, 95%CI: 1.070-3.021). For MTRR rs1801394 polymorphism, the frequency of G allele was significantly higher in cases than in controls (OR = 1.763, 95%CI: 1.023-3.036). Mothers with NTDs-affected children had higher AG genotype in RFC1 rs1051226 polymorphism than controls, manifesting an increased risk for NTDs (OR = 3.923, 95%CI: 1.361-11.308)., Conclusion: Folic acid deficiency, MTHFD1 rs2236225, MTHFR rs1801133, MTRR rs1801349 and RFC1 rs1051226 polymorphisms may be maternal risk factors of NTDs.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a family-based self-management educational intervention on self-management in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Wuhan, China., Methods: A quasi-experimental design with repeated measures was employed. Chinese patients with T2DM (N = 57) and their family members were assigned to 2 groups. The intervention group (n 1 = 29) received a tailored 7-session educational intervention and the control group (n 2 = 28) received routine care in the community. Data were collected at pre- and postintervention and at the end of the 3-month follow-up. Descriptive analysis and repeated-measures analysis of variance were used to analyze the data., Results: Participants with T2DM in the intervention group showed significance in greater reductions in A1C, body mass index, and waist circumference and significant improvements in diabetes knowledge, diabetes self-efficacy, self-care activities, and health-related quality of life compared with those in the control group. Family members in the intervention group had significant improvements in diabetes knowledge and health-related quality of life., Conclusion: Study findings demonstrated that a family-based diabetes self-management intervention incorporating self-efficacy theory may help Chinese adults with T2DM in modifying their lifestyle and performing self-care activities to improve A1C management., (© 2016 The Author(s).)

To unveil genetic variations between the predominant soybean mosaic virus (SMV) strains in China and in the USA, as well as to reveal the potential relevance between the similarity of gene sequences and the virulence of the viruses, we isolated and sequenced the coat protein (CP) gene of Chinese SMV strain SC7 by RT-PCR and compared the SC7 sequence with those of SMV strains from the USA. Analysis is showed that the CP gene of SC7 was 795 nucleotides in length and encoded 265 in amino acids'. The CP gene of SC7 and those of the strains from the USA exhibited 4%-5% nucleotide diversity and 1%-2% diversity amino acids. The conserved amino-acid sequence associated with aphid spread in the USA strains was DAG, and corresponded to DAD in SC7. The virulence of SC7 was greater than that of the SMV strains from the USA. Nevertheless, no clear relationships between sequence similarity of the CP genes from different strains and their virulence on differential hosts were found.

To measure the supply-demand level and the development capability of urban ecolsystem is the prerequisite in ensuring urban sustainable development. By using the analysis model of ecological footprint and the improved model of urban ecological carrying capacity, the utilization rate and supply degree of natural resources in Harbin City in 1998-2005 were quantitatively studied, with the supply-demand level and development capability of the City's ecosystem measured and analyzed comprehensively. The results showed that in 1998-2005, the demand of Harbin urban ecosystem was greater than its supply. Though the ecological deficit had an annual decrement of 2.45%, the contradiction between demand and supply of the ecosystem was still obvious. The diversity index of ecological footprint and the development capability both presented an overall uptrend, but the increment of the latter was far greater than that of the former, which illustrated the enhancement of the development capability being based on the consumption of ecological resources, and the urban development being of not sustainable. Social economic measures should be adopted to coordinate the contradiction between demand and supply and to realize the sustainable development of Harbin City.
