Purpose: To compare short-term anatomical outcomes observed in optical coherence tomography (OCT) between intravitreal injection (IVI) with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agent aflibercept (IVA) and subthreshold micropulse laser (SML) therapy in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC)., Methods: Thirty-nine eyes of 36 patients with symptomatic cCSC in this retrospective study received either IVA or SML between December 2020 and August 2022. Spectral-domain-OCT (SD-OCT) findings were compared between the two treatment groups in terms of central macular thickness (CMT), serous subretinal fluid (SRF) height, the presence of pigment epithelial detachment (PED) and subretinal hyperreflective foci (HF) at baseline and one-month follow-up visits., Results: Both groups showed significant reductions in CMT and SRF at one-month follow-up visit. However, there were no statistically significant differences between the IVA and SML groups. Complete SRF resolution was observed in 10 out of 21 and 7 out of 18 eyes in the IVA and SML groups, respectively; however, retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) damage remained persistent in patients with PEDs at baseline., Conclusions: Both IVA and SML were effective in treating cCSC. IVA and SML treatments had comparable effects in reducing CMT and SRF in eyes with cCSC. Further prospective studies with larger sample sizes and long-term follow-up visits are warranted to identify the long-term efficacy.

Background To describe the clinical and optical coherence tomography (OCT) features of focal choroidal excavation in Chinese patients. Methods Retrospectively, thirty-seven eyes (in 31 patients) that demonstrated focal choroidal excavation on spectral-domain OCT were collected. Their clinical characteristics and other features were also collected and analyzed. Results In total, 42 focal choroidal excavations were identified in 31 patients, including 25 unilateral and 6 bilateral (37 eyes). The abnormal changes in these eyes with choroidal excavation were more prominent at the outer part of the neuro-retina, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the choroid. The average transverse diameter and depth of the excavations were 670.8 μm and 106.9 μm, respectively. In addition to the conforming and nonconforming types, the excavations could also be classified into 2 types according to their shape: type 1 – small with a sharp, cut-down contour; and type 2 – slightly larger with a gradual edge. The transverse diameter/depth ratio of the two types were significantly different (type1: 4.57 ± 1.65, type 2: 10.0 ± 5.2; p = 0.000). Four central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) cases were confirmed by fluorescein angiography; in these cases, the retinal detachment was larger than the area of excavation, and the inner segment/outer segment (IS/OS) and external limiting membrane (ELM) were above those of the normal part. Concomitant CNV was also found in another 2 cases. Conclusions Focal choroidal excavation was not uncommon in Chinese patients. The choroid and the RPE at the excavation were impaired or vulnerable to other damage. Additionally, OCT might be useful in the differentiation between nonconforming excavations and ones with CSCR. Purpose: To determine the prevalence and associations of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) in elderly Chinese., Methods: The population-based cross-sectional Beijing Eye Study 2011 included 3468 individuals (age: 64.6 ± 9.8 years; range: 50-93 years), who underwent enhanced depth imaging of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). CSC was defined as serous detachment of the retina in the macular region without signs of haemorrhages or signs of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, exudative age-related macular degeneration or other retinal vascular disorders, both on fundus photographs and on optical coherence tomography (OCT) images., Results: Central serous chorioretinopathy was diagnosed in 10 eyes (prevalence rate: 0.15 ± 0.05%; 95% confidence interval (CI):0.06%, 0.25%) of 10 subjects (prevalence rate: 0.31 ± 0.10%; 95% CI: 0.12%, 0.50%). In five subjects, CSC was located foveally, and in five subjects, CSC was located extrafoveally. All subjects affected by foveal CSC were men, and three of the five individuals with extrafoveal CSC were men. In univariate analysis, subjects with CSC were significantly younger than the remaining study participants, and foveal CSC showed a significant (p = 0.02) predilection for men. After adjusting for age and gender, individuals with foveal CSC (383 ± 112 μm versus 270 ± 47 μm; p = 0.02) and the whole group of subjects with CSC had a significantly thicker subfoveal choroid. In a parallel manner, eyes contralateral to eyes with foveal CSC showed a significantly thicker subfoveal choroid than the age-adjusted control group (413 ± 74 μm versus 270 ± 47 μm; p = 0.001)., Conclusions: In Chinese aged 50+ years, the prevalence of CSC was 0.14% per subject.
