Background: To assess and compare the therapeutic outcomes of 0.05% Cyclosporine A (CsA) ophthalmic solution versus 0.1% Fluorometholone (FML) eyedrops in Chinese patients with mild dry eye disease (DED) unresponsive to conventional artificial tears (AT)., Methods: A total of 43 patients with mild DED, who have failed to respond to conventional AT therapy for over 3 months, were randomly assigned to receive either 0.05% CsA or 0.1% FML twice daily for 6-months. In addition, all the patients were instructed to use 0.1% SH 4 times a day as supplementary therapy. Dry eye examination, including Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT), Schirmer scores, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) scores, and conjunctival goblet cell (CGC) density, intraocular pressure (IOP), Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was conducted at baseline and then evaluated at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. Corneal endothelial cell density, corneal dendritic cells (DCs) and nerves were assessed by in vivo confocal microscopy at baseline and 6 months after treatment., Results: At 3 and 6 months after treatment, OSDI scores in the 0.05% CsA group showed more improvement than those in the 0.1% FML group. CFS was significantly lower and Schirmer scores were significantly higher in 0.05% CsA group compared with 0.1% FML group. NIBUT improved significantly in both groups, with greater improvement in the 0.05% CsA group at the 1-, 3-, and 6-month visits. Throughout the duration of the study, the 0.1% FML group exhibited no notable enhancement in CGC density. Conversely, a substantial elevation in CGC density was observed in the 0.05% CsA group. After 6 months of treatment, significantly reduced corneal DC density and area were obtained in 0.05% CsA group as compared to 0.1% FML group, while there were no significant changes in cornea nerve fiber density, cornea nerve fiber length and cornea nerve fiber width in both groups. Additionally, after 6 months of treatment, neither group showed any statistically significant changes in IOP, BCVA or in corneal endothelial cell density., Conclusion: The administration of 0.05% CsA proved effective in managing mild DED, offering a supplementary advantage in improving Schirmer scores, restoring CGC density and reducing corneal DC density compared to 0.1% FML eyedrops. Corporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance reflects the alignment of firms with national strategies and macroeconomic development principles, and serves as a crucial foundation for achieving sustainable development. Investigating the factors driving corporate ESG performance has significant theoretical and practical implications. This study utilizes data from Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies in China from 2010 to 2022 and theoretically analyzes and empirically tests the effects and mechanisms of executives' green experience on overall ESG performance and performance on each element of ESG. The results indicate that executives' green experience enhances the efficiency of corporate green patent innovation, thereby improving environmental performance. In addition, green experiences foster environmental investment and charitable donations, leading to better social performance. Executives with green experience also attract green investors and analysts' attention, thereby improving corporate governance and ultimately positively affecting overall corporate ESG performance. The robustness of these findings is confirmed through alternative variable measurements, Propensity Score Matching(PSM) Tests, Entropy Balancing Tests, Instrumental Variable Tests, and controlling for the impact of significant public health events. Further analysis revealed that the positive effects of executives' green experiences on corporate ESG performance are more pronounced in non-heavily polluting corporations, non-state-owned corporations, and firms where executives have higher power. This study enriches research on the consequences of executives' green experiences and the determinants of corporate ESG performance, extending the boundaries of how executive characteristics influence micro-level corporate outcomes. Background: The digital finance era has reshaped young people's lifestyles, risk perceptions and insurance participation decisions. Modern youth have to constantly seek for rational social security support and construct individual protection barriers to adapt to new lifestyles and social structures. China's multi-tiered, universal health insurance system is urgently needed to satisfy young people's flexible needs and rational decision-making., Methods: Based on the micro data from 2011 ~ 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), this paper uses macro data from Digital Inclusive Finance Index (DIFI) matching to construct probit and m-logit model to assess the impact of the development of digital finance on Chinese youth whether or not to participate in health insurance, and how they choose the concrete type of health insurance., Results: (1) Baseline regression results shows that digital finance has a significant positive effect on Chinese youth's health insurance participation decisions, and has different effects on choices within health insurance types. Strong support for the conclusions is provided by endogeneity and robustness tests. (2) The results of the heterogeneity analysis reveal that the marginal effect of digital finance on young people's health insurance decisions shows urban-rural differences, divergence in levels of self-rated health. (3) The mechanism analysis results suggest that there are two mechanism paths of digital finance on youth health insurance decisions: the household income effect and the subjective well-being effect, and two moderating effects: employment type and family structure., Conclusion: Highlighting the positive value that digital finance brings to the perception of youth insurance participation and the construction of social security systems, it needs to pay close attention to the dynamic changes in employment security and family structure through data, and explore the socio-psychological fluctuation and demand for social security among modern youth. Mangroves in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide are recognized as important sinks for microplastics (MPs). However, recent studies have focused on surface sediments, and in China, the vertical distribution and characteristics of MPs in mangrove sediments remain poorly understood. In this study, sediment cores of 100 cm depth were collected from six representative mangroves in China to investigate MPs via chronological analysis. Futian had the highest abundance of MPs (0-3123 n/kg), followed by Dongfang, Yunxiao, Zhanjiang, Dongzhaigang and Fangchenggang. The earliest MPs occurring in mangroves were dated back to 1955, and their abundance increased exponentially from bottom to surface sediments. MPs were mainly white in color, fiber-shaped, 1000-5000 μm in size, and of polypropylene/polyethylene polymer types. Furthermore, the MPs in the urban mangrove also showed a higher diversity in color. The results showed that the MP stocks in the urbanized Futian mangrove reached 1828 mg/m 3 , an order of magnitude higher than in other areas (251 ± 180 mg/m 3 ), contributing to 0.0057 % of the carbon storage of the sediment. Clothing may be a potential contributor to body metal burden in children. However, available information on heavy metals in children's clothing is extremely limited and the associated health risks remain poorly understood. This study investigated the concentrations of Pb, Cd, Co, Zn, Cr, As, Cu and Ni in new preschool children's clothing manufactured in four Asian regions. The children's clothing had higher levels of Ni and Cr but lower levels of Pb and Cd in comparison to the concentrations reported in other textile products. The concentrations of Cd were higher in the black clothing than those in the white and color samples. The non-cotton samples contained higher Co concentrations. The Pb concentrations in the samples manufactured in China were significantly higher than those in the other three regions. We estimated the dermal exposure doses for these metals and calculated the associated risks. The results indicated that the health risks from exposure to these metals in the children's clothing were acceptable. Microplastics (MPs) in marine environments have raised increasing concerns worldwide in recent years. China is one of the largest plastic producers in the world. In this review, available information on MPs in China Sea was reviewed, including studies on seawater, sediment, and biota. The status and limits of sampling methods of MPs were summarized, such as sampling tools, sampling volume, and depth of sampling. The analytical methods of MPs were outlined, such as sieving, density separation, purification, filtration, and visual sorting. The characteristics of MPs, such as abundances, sizes, shapes, polymer types, sources, and fates were analyzed. The abundances of MPs in China Sea varied from 0.1 to 27,840.0 items m -3 in seawater, and from 13.0 to 14,712.0 items kg -1 d.w. in sediments. Furthermore, MPs were mainly featured with sizes ranging from 0.001 to 0.5 mm, with colors of transparent and black, and polymer types of polypropylene and polyethylene. To promote research on MPs in China Sea, the sampling and analytical methods were insufficiently standardized and should be improved. As for microplastic (MP) pollution in China Sea, laws and regulations have already been established to manage and control plastic waste. Aims: This study aims to explore early intensive lipid-lowering therapy in patients with non- ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS)., Background: Lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels can reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Due to many reasons, the need for early intensive lipid-lowering therapy is far from being met in Chinese NSTE-ACS patients at high risk of recurrent ischaemic events., Objective: This study evaluates the feasibility, safety and efficacy of starting evolocumab in hospitals to lower LDL-C levels in Chinese patients with NSTE-ACS., Methods: In this prospective cohort study initiated by researchers, 334 consecutive patients with NSTEACS who had sub-standard LDL-C levels (LDL-C ≥2.3 mmol/L after regular oral statin treatment for at least 4 weeks; or LDL-C ≥3.2 mmol/L without regular oral statin treatment) were included. Patients who agreed to treatment with evolocumab (140 mg subcutaneously every 2 weeks, initiated in hospital and used for 12 weeks after discharge) were enrolled in the evolocumab group (n=96) and others in the control group (n=238). All enrolled patients received regular statin treatment (atorvastatin 20 mg/day or rosuvastatin 10 mg/day; doses unchanged throughout the study). The primary endpoint was the change in LDL-C levels from baseline to week 12., Results: Most patients (67.1%) had not received regular statin treatment before. In the evolocumab group, LDL-C levels decreased significantly at week 4 and remained stable at week 8 and 12 (all p<0.001). At week 12, the LDL-C percentage change from baseline in the evolocumab group was - 79.2±12.7% (from an average of 3.7 to 0.7 mmol/L), while in the control group, it was -37.4±15.4% (from an average of 3.3 to 2.0 mmol/L). The mean difference between these 2 groups was -41.8% (95% CI -45.0 to -38.5%; p<0.001). At week 12, the proportion of patients with LDL-C levels <1.8 mmol/L and 1.4 mmol/L in the evolocumab group was significantly higher than in the control group (96.8 vs 36.1%; 90.6 vs 7.1%; both p<0.001). The incidences of adverse events and cardiovascular events were similar in both the groups., Conclusion: In this prospective cohort study, we evaluated the early initiation of evolocumab in NSTEACS patients in China. To explore the geographical variations in the nosZ-denitrifier community and the underlying influential factors, surface sediments were collected from six mangroves across China, including Yunxiao (YX), Futian (FT), Fangchenggang (FCG), Zhanjiang (ZJ), Dongzhaigang (DZG), and Dongfang (DF). The nosZ gene abundance in mangrove sediments were 1.60 × 10 5 -1.17 × 10 6 copies g -1 dry sediment, with a higher density in Avicennia marina forest than the mudflat. Denitrifier community richness and diversity increased with decreasing latitude based on the Chao1 richness and Shannon diversity index, with the highest diversity being observed in the DF mangrove. The denitrifier communities could be classified into three groups including south DF mangrove, middle FCG, ZJ and DZG mangroves, and north YX and FT mangroves based on HCA and PCoA analysis. The nosZ OTUs could be divided into seven distinct clusters with different proportionality characteristics among mangroves. During the production, use and disposal of plastic products, microplastics (MPs) are dispersed into the surrounding environment and have inevitable impacts on mangrove ecosystems in estuaries and offshore areas. In the mangroves of Southern China, the systematic evaluation of the distribution, characteristics and ecological risks of MPs is lacking. In this study, surface sediments (0-5 cm depth) were collected from six representative mangroves in China to explore MP contamination and its associated ecological risk. Based on the results, MP concentrations of MPs in mangrove sediments were as follows: FT (2249 ± 747 items/kg), ZJ (736 ± 269 items/kg), DF (649 ± 443 items/kg), DZG (431 ± 170 items/kg), YX (424 ± 127 items/kg), and FCG (227 ± 173 items/kg). The higher MP concentration in the Futian mangrove was mainly related to inputs from the Pearl River, the third largest river in China. The predominant shape, colour, and size of MPs were fibrous, white-transparent, and 500-5000 μm, respectively. The main MP polymer types were polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene. Degradation artefacts were present on surface of MPs as well as metallic and non-metallic elements. MPs concentration in mangrove sediments increased with increasing social-economic development of surrounding districts, which indicated the clear influence of anthropogenic activity on MP pollution in these mangroves. Furthermore, total organic carbon (TOC) and silt content were positively associated with MPs (P < 0.01), indicating a facilitatory role in deposition of MPs in mangroves. Sediments were collected from urban mangroves in Shenzhen, China, including Shajing (SJ) and Xixiang (XX) featured with industrial district; Futian (FT) and Baguang (BG) featured with central business district and ecological preserve, respectively. Distributions, pollution levels and human health risks of Hg were explored. In both surface and vertical sediments, mean Hg concentration was highest in SJ mangrove, which may be due to its proximity to point-source discharge of Maozhou River in Pearl River Estuary, China. Sediment properties (pH, salinity, TOC and particle size) had limited impact on Hg accumulation due to their non-significant correlations. Geo-accumulation index, pollution load index, potential ecological risk index, and the ecological risk assessment code showed the highest ecological risk in SJ mangrove, followed by XX, FT, and BG mangroves. Despite the benefits of shellfish consumption, the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in shellfish can endanger consumer's health. The consumption of seafood in Shenzhen (a fast-developing metropolis in China) has received more and more attention. Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) in ten common shellfish species and associated health risks were analyzed for Shenzhen's consumers by evaluating estimated weekly intake (EWI), non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to children, adolescents, and adults. In this study, 50 shellfish samples were collected in total. The results showed that the levels of inorganic arsenic (iAs) in Babylonia areolata exceeded the maximum permissible limit set by the food safety guidelines (0.5 mg/kg), while other elements were below the limit in the present guidelines (Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China, GB 2762-2012). EWI values of children, adolescents, and adults were all lower than provisional tolerable weekly intakes (PTWIs) of all shellfish species. The analysis of total target hazard quotients (TTHQ) showed that the ingested B. areolata in children, adolescents, and adults were all at non-carcinogenic risks; the consumption of Argopecten irradians and Chlamys farreri would pose non-carcinogenic risks for children only. In all age groups, the consumption of A. irradians, B. areolata, C. farreri, and Crassostrea ariakensis would lead to lifetime cancer risk due to Cd bioaccumulation, with toxicity of Pb and iAs to be acceptable and negligible.

Mangroves act as sinks for terrigenous pollutants to alleviate their influence on offshore marine ecosystem. The nationwide study of PBDEs contamination in mangrove wetlands of China has not been explored, and their risk for human health lack quantitative analysis. In this study, sediment samples were collected in six mangrove wetlands along coastal area of South China to evaluate the levels, congener distributions and ecological risks of eight PBDEs, including BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, and -209. Levels of ∑PBDEs (the sum of seven PBDEs except BDE-209) and BDE-209 were 0.13-2.18 ng g -1 and 1.44-120.28 ng g -1 , respectively. In particular, mean level of BDE-209 was highest in Futian, followed by Yunxiao, Fangchenggang, Zhanjiang, Dongzhaigang, and Dongfang. As dominant PBDE congener, BDE-209 accounted for 63.6%-99.1% of the total PBDEs, suggesting the major sources of commercial deca-BDE mixtures. Among seven PBDE congeners except BDE-209, slightly different percentages of PBDE congeners were detected, with BDE-154, -47, and -100 being predominant congeners. Positive relationship was observed for total organic matter (TOM) with BDE-209, with no such relationships found for particle size compositions (clay, silt and sand). As for sediment-dwelling organism, the ecological risks from tri-, tera-, and hexa-BDE congeners could be negligible, and those from penta- and deca-BDE congeners were low or moderate, indicating major ecological risk drivers of penta- and deca-BDE congeners in mangrove wetlands in China. The ecological risk of PBDEs in mangrove sediments for human health was thought to be consumption of fish which would bioaccumulate PBDEs from the contaminated sediment. Long-distance inter-basin water transfer solves the problem of unbalanced water resources in different regions. However, it also changes the natural water chemistry characteristics as well as the bioavailability of heavy metals in the receiving water. In this study, taking the South-to-North Water Transfer Project in China as an example, the basic physicochemical characteristics of the source water (in the Danjiangkou (DJK) Reservoir) and receiving water (in the Beitang (BT) Reservoir) were studied. The BLM (biotic ligand model) was used to study the effect of long-distance inter-basin water transfer on the bioavailability of Cu in receiving waters. The results showed that the TOC (total organic carbon) and TDS (total dissolved solids) in the BT Reservoir water were 10 times and 4.6 times greater than those of the DJK Reservoir water, respectively. The ions in the BT Reservoir were mainly (K + +Na + )-(SO 4 2- +CI - ), while the ions in the DJK Reservoir were mainly (Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ )-HCO 3 - . The results from the BLM showed that the main species of Cu in the water was total organic Cu (Torg Cu), which accounted for 98.69% and 99.77% of the Cu in the DJK Reservoir and BT Reservoir, respectively. The LC50 of Cu for Daphnia magna was 1203.40 ± 57.70 μg/l in the BT Reservoir and only 101.93 ± 7.60 μg/l in the DJK Reservoir. The criteria maximum concentration value of the BT Reservoir was 13.75 times that of the DJK Reservoir, while the criteria continuous concentration value of the BT Reservoir was 13.76 times that of the DJK Reservoir. These results showed that the heavy metals content in water bodies should not be used as the only consideration for water ecological security in the inter-basin water transfer process, and that differences in water quality criteria values caused by differing water environmental qualities in the river basins must be taken into consideration.

Urban mangroves are affected by surrounding anthropogenic activities. Heavy metals in urban mangroves lack systematic evaluation, and their relationships with surrounding anthropogenic activities have not been explored with quantified data. In this study, urban mangroves with different urban functional zonings were selected in Shenzhen, South China, including: Shajing mangrove (SJM) and Xixiang mangrove (XXM) featured with industry district, Futian mangrove (FTM) and Baguang mangrove (BGM) featured with central business district and ecological preserve, respectively. The distribution, ecological risk, and pollution sources of heavy metals were determined. Heavy metals' relationships with surrounding functional zonings were also explored. The levels of Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni and Cr in SJM were significantly higher than the other mangrove stands, which may be related to its proximity to point-source discharges of Maozhou River in Pearl River Estuary, China. Potential ecological risk index, pollution load index, mean PEL quotient, mean effect range median quotient, and total toxic unit showed the highest ecological risk in SJM, followed by XXM, FTM, and BGM. With the order of BGM - FTM - XXM - SJM, Zn, Ni, and Cr presented dominantly in the labile fraction, demonstrating increased anthropogenic impacts. Heavy metals in FTM and BGM were mainly from anthropogenic and lithogenic originations, with only anthropogenic origination of heavy metals to be detected in SJM and XXM. Heavy metal pollution was highest in SJM featured with industry district, and metal products industry in surrounding district should attract special attention due to its affinity for heavy metal accumulation in urban mangroves., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Mangroves are often converted into gei wai ponds for aquaculture, but how such conversion affects the accumulation and behavior of heavy metals in sediments is not clear. The present study aims to quantify the concentration and speciation of heavy metals in sediments in different habitats, including gei wai pond, mangrove marsh dominated by Avicennia marina and bare mudflat, in a mangrove nature reserve in South China. The results showed that gei wai pond acidified the sediment and reduced its electronic conductivity and total organic carbon (TOC) when compared to A. marina marsh and mudflat. The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb at all sediment depths in gei wai pond were lower than the other habitats, indicating gei wai pond reduced the fertility and the ability to retain heavy metals in sediment. Gei wai pond sediment also had a lower heavy metal pollution problem according to multiple evaluation methods, including potential ecological risk coefficient, potential ecological risk index, geo-accumulation index, mean PEL quotients, pollution load index, mean ERM quotients and total toxic unit. Heavy metal speciation analysis showed that gei wai pond increased the transfer of the immobilized fraction of Cd and Cr to the mobilized one. According to the acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) analysis, the conversion of mangroves into gei wai pond reduced values of ([SEM] - [AVS])/f oc , and the role of TOC in alleviating heavy metal toxicity in sediment. This study demonstrated the conversion of mangrove marsh into gei wai pond not only reduced the ecological purification capacity on heavy metal contamination, but also enhanced the transfer of heavy metals from gei wai pond sediment to nearby habitats.

The present study compared accumulation of heavy metals in a mangrove swamp dominated by Kandelia obovata with that by Sonneratia apetala in Pearl River Estuary, China. The results showed that the concentrations of heavy metals at all sediment depths in the S. apetala site were significantly higher than that in K. obovata. The geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index also showed that S. apetala sediment had a higher contamination of heavy metals, especially Cd. S. apetala significantly altered the biogeochemical cycles of Cd, lead (Pb), nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr). In S. apetala sediment, TOC played an important role in sequestering heavy metals as reflected by its positive correlations with Zn and Pb. This study demonstrated the importance of plant species in altering soil quality and heavy metal accumulation, and S. apetala is more efficiently working as a pollution barrier than K. obovata.

Mangroves are threatened due to urban development and human activities in coastal regions. Four urban mangroves in Shenzhen (rapidly developing city of China) were selected according to urban functional zoning, namely, Shajing mangrove (SJM) and Xixiang mangrove (XXM) featured with industry district, Futian mangrove (FTM) and Baguang mangrove (BGM) featured with central business district and ecological preserve. Eight BDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, and -209) in mangrove sediments and leaves were determined. The highest level of BDE-209 in SJM was proximate to areas of point-source discharges of Dongbao River in Pearl River Estuary, China. Total organic carbon (TOC) was influential in BDE-209 accumulations in SJM, XXM, and FTM. Multiple variate analysis implied that PBDEs in SJM, XXM and FTM mainly composed of penta-, octa-, and deca-BDEs, with surface runoff to be the main contamination sources; while BGM was contaminated by penta- and octa-BDEs. Ecological risk of BDE-209 was high in SJM, with medium/negligible risk in the other urban mangroves. The transfers of BDE-209 from sediment to leaf were weak (BGM and FTM), improved (XXM), and restricted (SJM), respectively. This is the first reports of spatial distribution and bioaccumulation of PBDEs in urban mangroves featured with different urban functional zonings. Mangrove plants play an important role in heavy metal maintenance in a mangrove ecosystem. To evaluate the characteristics of heavy metal contamination in the Futian mangrove forest, Shenzhen, China, eight heavy metals in mangrove sediments and plants were monitored, including essential elements such as Cu and Zn, and non-essential elements such as Cr, Ni, As, Cd, Pb and Hg. The results showed that the heavy metals exhibited the following scheme: Zn > As > Cu ≈ Cr > Pb > Ni > Cd ≈ Hg in sediment cores, among which Cd, As, Pb and Hg contents were nearly ten times higher than the background values. There was no significant difference in metal maintenance capability between native and exotic species. In mangrove plants' leaves and stems, concentrations of Cu, Zn and As were higher than other heavy metals. The low bioconcentration factors for most heavy metals, except for Cr, implied the limited ability of heavy metal accumulation by the plants. Mangrove plants seem to develop some degree of tolerance to Cr. The factor analysis implies that anthropogenic influences have altered metal mobility and bioavailability.
