Surface ozone (O3) pollution in China has become a serious environmental problem in recent years. In the present study, we targeted the HRB, a large region located in China's north–south border zone, to assess the driving forces of meteorology and emission changes on surface ozone. A Kolmogorov–Zurbenko (KZ) filter method was performed on the maximum daily average 8-h (MDA8) concentrations of ozone in the HRB during 2015–2020 to decompose the original time series. The findings demonstrated that the short-term (O3ST), seasonal (O3SN), and long-term components (O3LT) of MDA8 O3 variations accounted for 34.2%, 56.1%, and 2.9% of the total variance, respectively. O3SN has the greatest influence on the daily variation in MDA8 O3, followed by O3ST. In coastal cities, the influence of O3ST was enhanced. The influence of O3SN was stronger in the northwestern HRB. Air temperature is the prevailing variable that influences the photochemical formation of ozone. A clear phase lag (7–34 days) of the baseline component between MDA8 O3 and the atmospheric temperature was found in the HRB. Using multiple linear regression, the effect of temperature on ozone was removed. We estimated that the increase in ozone concentration in the HRB was mainly caused by the emission changes (79.4%), and the meteorological conditions made a small contribution (20.6%). Background: An increasing number of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection are undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA) surgery in China. Less attention is provided to the special populations and the purpose of this study is to assess the effect of HBV infection on the prognosis TJAs.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent elective primary hip and knee arthroplasties in Shanghai Huashan Hospital from 2013 to 2016. Non-hepatitis B cohort was built to match the case cohort to identify whether HBV infection was a risk factor associated with postoperative complications. A total number of 196 patients who underwent primary TJAs were involved in the study, including 49 patients with hepatitis B and 147 non-hepatitis B subjects.Results: Among all the patients with TJAs, 5.5% of patients were infected with HBV for the first time. The incidence rate of complications in patients after arthroplasty with hepatitis B infection was significantly higher than that in patients without hepatitis B (10.2% compared to 4.7%, P < 0.01). Surgical related complications (6.1% compared to 3.4%) and general medical complications (4.1% compared to 1.3%) were higher than those in non-B hepatitis group. Compared with non-B hepatitis group, the overall risk of hepatitis B infection increased by 25% (95% CI, 1.04-1.46; p < 0.01). Similar results were obtained for medical and surgical complications. HBV infection presented a 31% increased risk (95% CI, 1.02-1.62; p < 0.01) for medical complication and an 18% increased risk (95% CI, 1.10-1.26; p < 0.01) for surgical complication. No statistical difference was found between the surgical methods and sex. However, a significant difference of C-reactive protein (CRP) level was found between HBV infection group and the matched non-infected group (P < 0.01).Conclusion: This is the first study to investigate the risk of perioperative complications of hepatitis B in Chinese TJAs patients. In consideration of the large population of HBV infection in China, more attention and medical care should be provided to patients with HBV infection who need to undergo TJA operation. Urbanization reflects the overall behavior of human society; thus, characterization of its associated spatial and temporal trends has been extensively researched. This study examines the process of urban expansion in the Huaihe River Basin (HRB) which is a key transition region within China’s urban system. In order to grasp the urban expansion process in different temporal sequences objectively, rapidly, and accurately, we used remote sensing data to assess the urban expansion in time and space. Urban expansion rules were defined for the urban area, urbanization intensification, extended dynamic degree, and spatial pattern. The research findings show that the urban area expansion speed was at medium level throughout the entire HRB and within each province. Presently, the formation of a whole urban agglomeration or urban system is not complete in the HRB; urban expansion in the HRB displayed space-time disequilibrium tendencies during 1998–2013. Brain growth charts and age-normed brain templates are essential resources for researchers to eventually contribute to the care of individuals with atypical developmental trajectories. The present work generates age-normed brain templates for children and adolescents at one-year intervals and the corresponding growth charts to investigate the influences of age and ethnicity using a common pediatric neuroimaging protocol. Two accelerated longitudinal cohorts with the identical experimental design were implemented in the United States and China. Anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of typically developing school-age children (TDC) was obtained up to three times at nominal intervals of 1.25 years. The protocol generated and compared population- and age-specific brain templates and growth charts, respectively. A total of 674 Chinese pediatric MRI scans were obtained from 457 Chinese TDC and 190 American pediatric MRI scans were obtained from 133 American TDC. Population- and age-specific brain templates were used to quantify warp cost, the differences between individual brains and brain templates. Volumetric growth charts for labeled brain network areas were generated. Shape analyses of cost functions supported the necessity of age-specific and ethnicity-matched brain templates, which was confirmed by growth chart analyses. These analyses revealed volumetric growth differences between the two ethnicities primarily in lateral frontal and parietal areas, regions which are most variable across individuals in regard to their structure and function. Age- and ethnicity-specific brain templates facilitate establishing unbiased pediatric brain growth charts, indicating the necessity of the brain charts and brain templates generated in tandem. Purpose: The study is aimed at investigating the association between different reduction classifications (anatomic reduction, positive buttress position reduction, and negative buttress position reduction) and two end points (complications and reoperations)., Methods: The study retrospectively analyzed 110 patients undergoing internal fixation with three parallel cannulated screws from January 2012 to January 2019 in Huashan Hospital. Based on the principles of the "Gotfried reduction," all enrolled patients were divided into three groups: anatomic reduction, positive buttress position reduction, and negative buttress position reduction intraoperatively or immediately after surgery. Clinical characteristics including age, sex, side, Garden classification, Pauwels classification, fracture level, reduction classification, Garden alignment index angles, cortical thickness index (CTI), tip-caput distance (TCD), angle of the inferior screw, and the two ending points (complications and reoperations) were included in the statistical analysis. The Mann-Whitney U -test, the chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and multiple logistic regression analysis were used in the study., Results: Of the 110 patients included in our study, the mean ± standard deviation (SD) of age was 51.4 ± 10.4 years; 41 patients showed anatomic reduction, 35 patients showed positive buttress position reduction, and 34 patients showed negative buttress position reduction. For the outcomes, 24 patients (anatomic reduction: 6 [14.6%]; positive buttress position reduction: 5 [14.3%]; negative buttress position reduction: 13 [38.2%]) had complications, while 18 patients (anatomic reduction: 5 [12.2%]; positive buttress position reduction: 3 [8.6%]; negative buttress position reduction: 10 [29.4%]) underwent reoperations after surgery. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis of complications, negative buttress position reduction (negative buttress position reduction vs. anatomic reduction, OR = 4.309, 95%CI = 1.137 to 16.322, and p = 0.032) was found to be correlated with higher risk of complications. The same variable (negative buttress position reduction vs. anatomic reduction, OR = 5.744, 95%CI = 1.177 to 28.042, and p = 0.031) was also identified as risk factor in the multivariate logistic regression analysis of reoperations. However, no significant difference between positive reduction and anatomical reduction was investigated in the analysis of risk factors for complications, not reoperations., Conclusion: Positive buttress position reduction of femoral neck fractures in young patients showed a similar incidence of complications and reoperations compared with those of anatomic reduction. The concept of ecosystem services (ES) supply and demand has attracted increasing attention in science and policy making because it effectively links ecosystem services to human well-being. The imbalance of ES supply and demand in urban areas has become a key issue in regional sustainable development. In this context, we calculated ES supply and demand for Wuhan City, China, using the ES supply and demand ratio (ESDR) and the comprehensive ES supply-demand ratio (CESDR) to express the relationship between ES supply and demand. Ecological zoning was proposed according to the spatial differentiation of the ES supply-demand relationship, and policy recommendations are made. The results show that from the perspective of total ES supply and demand, the water yield supply (S WY ), grain yield supply (S GY ), and recreation services supply (S RS ) are greater than the water yield demand (D WY ), grain yield demand (D GY ), and recreation services demand (D RS ), and that the climate regulation supply (S CR ) is less than the climate regulation demand (D CR ). From a spatial perspective, there are imbalances and mismatches in ES supply and demand, especially in urban central areas. The values of S WY , S GY , S CS , and S RS per unit area are less than their respective demand values, and the area of mismatch has expanded with the gradual increase of the built-up area. The spatial pattern of ES supply and demand is circular, with the form of "deficit zone-relative equilibrium zone-surplus zone", which corresponds to "urban central area-near suburbs-distant suburbs and rural areas".

Plasma cryopreservation is unavoidable in China, due to technical specifications requiring storage of additional plasma at -80 degrees for three years. However, the effect of freezing on non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is still uncertain. We collected 144 euploid pregnant samples, 22 on trisomy 21, 4 on trisomy 13, and 3 on trisomy 18, by massively parallel sequencing before and after freezing. Compared with the success rate of 100% of fresh samples, the detection success rates of trisomy 21, trisomy 13 and euploidy in frozen samples by NIPT were 95.45%, 75% and 95.14%, respectively. Of these, 9 cases of frozen sample sequencing failed, with 8 cases being due to high GC content. The chromosome 21 (chr21) z-value of the frozen trisomy 21 samples was lower than that of fresh samples. Meanwhile, freezing reduced the male positive foetal cell-free DNA (cfDNA) fraction, which was accompanied by an increase in the Unimap-GC level in the massively parallel sequencing data and a decrease in the Unique reads/Total reads ratio. Laboratory freezing reduced the chr21 z-value of foetal trisomy 21, which can be explained by a reduction in the foetal cfDNA fraction and effective Unique reads for NIPT analysis. The Unimap-GC content of the serum samples after freezing was higher, which can lead to failure of NIPT detection.

Executive function (EF) refers to a set of cognitive abilities involved in self-regulated behavior. Given the critical role of EF in cognition, strategies for improving EF have attracted intensive attention in recent years. Previous studies have explored the effects of abacus-based mental calculation (AMC) training on several cognitive abilities. However, it remains unclear whether AMC training affects EF and its neural correlates. In this study, participants were randomly assigned to AMC or control groups upon starting primary school. The AMC group received 2 h AMC training every week, while the control group did not have any abacus experience. Neural activity during an EF task was examined using functional MRI for both groups in their 4 th and 6 th grades. Our results showed that the AMC group performed better and faster than the control group in both grades. They also had lower activation in the frontoparietal reigons than the control group in the 6 th grade. From the 4 th to the 6 th grade, the AMC group showed activation decreases in the frontoparietal regions, while the control group exhibited an opposite pattern. Furthermore, voxel-wise regression analyses revealed that better performance was associated with lower task-relevant brain activity in the AMC group but associated with greater task-relevant brain activity in the control group. These results suggest that long-term AMC training, with calculation ability as its original target, may improve EF and enhance neural efficiency of the frontoparietal regions during development. Our previous work demonstrated that abacus-based mental calculation (AMC), a traditional Chinese calculation method, could help children improve their math abilities (e.g. basic arithmetical ability) and executive function (e.g. working memory). This study further examined the effects of long-term AMC training on math ability in visual-spatial domain and the task switching component of executive function. More importantly, this study investigated whether AMC training modulated the relationship between math abilities and task switching. The participants were seventy 7-year-old children who were randomly assigned into AMC and control groups at primary school entry. Children in AMC group received 2-hour AMC training every week since primary school entry. On the contrary, children in the control group had never received any AMC training. Math and task switching abilities were measured one year and three years respectively after AMC training began. The results showed that AMC children performed better than their peers on math abilities in arithmetical and visual-spatial domains. In addition, AMC group responded faster than control group in the switching task, while no group difference was found in switch cost. Most interestingly, group difference was present in the relationships between math abilities and switch cost. These results implied the effect of AMC training on math abilities as well as its relationship with executive function.

Constructing an atlas from a population of brain images is of vital importance to medical image analysis. Especially in neuroscience study, creating a brain atlas is useful for intra- and inter-population comparison. Research on brain atlas construction has attracted great attention in recent years, but the research on pediatric population is still limited, mainly due to the limited availability and the relatively low quality of pediatric magnetic resonance brain images. This article is targeted at creating a high quality representative brain atlas for Chinese pediatric population. To achieve this goal, we have designed a set of preprocessing procedures to improve the image quality and developed an intensity and sulci landmark combined groupwise registration method to align the population of images for atlas construction. As demonstrated in experiments, the newly constructed atlas can better represent the size and shape of brains of Chinese pediatric population, and show better performance in Chinese pediatric brain image analysis compared with other standard atlases., (Copyright © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
