Given the pollution prevalence of potentially hazardous elements (PTEs) in agricultural soils worldwide, it is crucial to establish a comprehensive approach to accurately assess soil contamination, and quantitatively allocate sources and source-specific risks. In the study, soil contamination was assessed through environmental capacity based on the local geochemical baseline established using PTE contents of the subsoil. The sources of PTEs were quantified through positive matrix factorization (PMF) and GIS mapping. Ecological risk (ER) and human health risk (HHR) models based on PMF were used to evaluate source-specific ER and HHR. Taking Jieyang City as an example, obvious contamination of As, Pb, Cd, Zn and Hg was observed in agricultural soils, and 94.40% of sites had high-to-medium capacity for local PTE contamination. Four sources were apportioned including agricultural activities (17.36%), industrial activities (20.49%), natural sources (34.60%) and traffic emissions (27.55%). The study area was at moderate ER level (121.21) with industrial activities contributing the most (41.26%). The carcinogenic risks (3.21E-05 for children and 1.42E-05 for adults) were within the tolerable range, and non-carcinogenic risks (7.08E-01 for children and 7.70E-02 for adults) were not significant. Agricultural activities were the largest source to the carcinogenic (47.17% for children and 46.31% for adults) and non carcinogenic risks (53.55% for children and 53.03% for adults). The situation of air pollution in Guanzhong Plain has been increasing in recent years; hence, it is very important to study the characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their health risks in urban functional zones. We analyzed 115 VOCs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/hydrogen ion flame detector (GC-MS/FID) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) at four sampling sites in the traffic, comprehensive, industrial, and scenic zones of Baoji. We analyzed the main components and key species in the different functional zones. Ozone formation potential (OFP),·OH consumption rate ( L ·OH ), and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) were used to evaluate the environmental impact, and the hazard index (HI) and lifetime cancer risk (LCR) methods were employed. The results revealed that the mean values of φ (TVOCs) in the traffic, comprehensive, industrial, and scenic zones were (59.63±23.85)×10 -9 , (42.92±11.88)×10 -9 , (60.27±24.09)×10 -9 , and (55.54±7.44)×10 -9 , respectively. The dominant contributors at the traffic zone were alkanes, and those at the other functional zones were OVOCs. Acetaldehyde, acetone, n-butane, and isopentane were abundant at different functional zones. According to the characteristic ratios of VOCs, the average ratio of toluene to benzene (T/B) at the traffic, comprehensive, industrial, and scenic zones were 1.84, 2.39, 1.28, and 1.64, respectively, and the ratio of iso-pentane to n-pentane ( i/n ) was mainly between 1 and 4. The results indicated that VOCs in Baoji were significantly affected by vehicle emissions and gasoline evaporation, biomass and coal combustion, and industrial coatings and foundry. The ratio of m/p -xylene to ethylbenzene (X/E) was lower than 2 at the four functional zones, and the minimum was 1.79 at the scenic zones; the results revealed that X/E was small, and the aging degree of air masses was high, indicating the influence of regional transport. According to the ratio of formaldehyde to acetaldehyde (C1/C2) and the ratio of acetaldehyde to propanal (C2/C3), it was suggested that there may have been evident anthropogenic emission sources, and the photochemical reaction had an important effect on aldehydes and ketones. Environmental impact assessment results revealed that OVOCs and alkenes contributed significantly to OFP and OFP from large to small was as follows:industrial zone>scenic zone>traffic zone>comprehensive zone. The range of L ·OH in each functional zone was 8.77-15.82 s -1 , with isoprene contributing the most in the industrial zone and acetaldehyde contributing the most at other functional zones. The SOAFP of each functional zone was as follows:scenic zone>comprehensive zone>traffic zone>industrial zone. Toluene, m/p -xylene, and isoprene were the notable species. According to the health risk assessment of EPA, the HI of toxic VOCs in all functional zones was lower than 1, which was at an acceptable level. However, the number of days with HI>1 in industrial zones accounted for 42.86% of the total sampling days, indicating a high risk. The lifetime carcinogenic risk (LCR) of the traffic, comprehensive, industrial, and scenic zones were 1.83×10 -5 , 1.21×10 -5 , 1.85×10 -5 , and 1.63×10 -5 , respectively, which were all in grade Ⅲ of the rating system, indicating a high probability of cancer risk. Species with LCR greater than 10 -6 were formaldehyde; acetaldehyde; 1,2-dibromoethane; 1,2-dichloroethane; 1,2-dichloropropane; and chloroform.

In this research, enrichment factor (EF) and pollution load index were utilized to explore the contamination characteristics of toxic elements (TEs) in park dust. The results exhibited that park dust in the study area was mainly moderately polluted, and the EF values of dust Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu and Sb were all > 1. The concentrations of Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb increased with the decrease of dust particle size. The investigation results of chemical speciation and bioavailability of TEs showed that Zn had the highest bioavailability. Three sources of TEs were determined by positive matrix factorization model, Pearson correlation analysis and geostatistical analysis, comprising factor 1 mixed sources of industrial and transportation activities (46.62%), factor 2 natural source (25.56%) and factor 3 mixed source of agricultural activities and the aging of park infrastructures (27.82%). Potential ecological risk (PER) and human health risk (HHR) models based on source apportionment were exploited to estimate PER and HHR of TEs from different sources. The mean PER value of TEs in the park dust was 114, indicating that ecological risk in the study area was relatively high. Factor 1 contributed the most to PER, and the pollution of Cd was the most serious. There were no significant carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for children and adults in the study area. And factor 3 was the biggest source of non-carcinogenic risk, and As, Cr and Pb were the chief contributor to non-carcinogenic risk. Non-ferrous metal smelting activities have always been considered as one of the foremost anthropogenic sources of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). The enrichment factor (EF) and pollution load index (PLI) were used to evaluate the pollution level of soil PTEs; positive matrix factorization (PMF), correlation analysis, and geostatistics were utilized to quantify the sources of soil PTEs; and potential ecological risk (PER) and human health risk (HHR) of different sources from farmland, construction land, and natural land were quantifiably determined via combined PTE sources with PER and HHR assessment models. Taking the smelting area of Daye City as an example, the evaluation results of EF and PLI showed that the soil PTE pollution in the study area was serious, especially Cd and Cu. And four sources were quantitatively allocated as agricultural practices (12.14%), traffic emissions (23.07%), natural sources (33.46%), and industrial activities (31.33%). For PER, industrial activities were the largest contributor to PER, accounting for 55.66%, 56.30%, and 55.36% of farmland, construction land, and natural land, respectively, and Cd was the most dangerous element. In terms of HHR, industrial activities were also the cardinal contributors under the three land use types. Children were exposed to serious non-carcinogenic risks under three land use patterns and slight carcinogenic risk in construction land (1.06E - 04). Significantly, the carcinogenic risk of children in farmland (9.06 × 10 -5 ) was very close to the threshold (1 × 10 -4 ), which requires attention. Both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for adults were all at acceptable levels. The health risks (carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks) of children from four different sources were distinctly higher than those of adults. A volatile organic compounds(VOCs) emission source classification and accounting system from domestic sources in China was established for the period between 2010 and 2018. Suggestions for the prevention and treatment of VOCs from domestic sources were developed and proposed. The results showed that the total VOCs emission inventory from domestic sources in China in 2018 was 2518 kt. Architectural decoration, asphalt road paving, cooking, and rural household biomass use source were the four largest contributors, accounting for 69.22% of the total emissions. Chemical household products and urban and rural coal use contributed equally, accounting for 10.43% and 9.98%, respectively, whilst car repair accounted for 7.75%. Shandong, Sichuan, Henan, Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Hebei were the six provinces that contributed the most(36.01%). During the 2010-2018 period, China's domestic VOCs emissions increased at a rate of 0.43%, and after reaching a peak in 2013, the emissions began to decline at a rate of 2.23%. The reason for the decline was that, on the one hand, the cleaner energy consumption of residents made a contribution to the gradual reduction of domestic coal and biomass consumption. On the other hand, the gradual saturation of housing construction in some areas, which led to a decrease in the annual construction of the country. It is recommended to promote the comprehensive management of architectural decoration, cooking methods, and car repair, while paying attention to the VOCs emissions from asphalt road paving. Meanwhile, continue to optimize the energy use structure of domestic sources, and promote the pollution control of civil coal and household biomass combustion in accordance with local regulations and multiple measures.

Large-scale smelting activities release large amounts of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in fine particles. These particles floating in the air eventually settle on leaves, roads, and even indoors. In smelting areas, indoor environments are generally considered relatively safe. However, these areas are not taken seriously and need to be assessed. This paper systematically studied pollution characteristics, main sources and health risks of ten potentially toxic elements, PTEs (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Hg, Cd, As, Cr, Pb, and Tl), of dust samples from different indoor environments in smelting areas using various methods. Therefore, this study analyzed dust samples from 35 indoor environments. The enrichment factors showed that the indoor dust samples were extremely enriched by Cd and Cu and significantly enriched by Hg, Pb, As, and Zn. The result of the spatial distribution showed that the high-value PTEs were mainly distributed near the Cu smeltery. Three sources were quantitatively assigned for these PTEs, and they were industrial smelting and traffic activities (44.40%), coal-fired activities (18.11%), and natural existence (37.49%). Based on the calculation of health risk, the value of THI for children was 7.57, indicating a significant non-carcinogenic risk. For carcinogenic risk, the values of TCR for children and adults were 2.91×10 -2 and 2.97×10 -3 , respectively, which were much higher than the acceptable risk value 1×10 -4 . Combining health risk assessment with source discrimination, we found that the industrial discharges and traffic activities were the most main source of non-cancer and cancer risks. This study examined the prevalence of burnout and its association with quality of life (QOL) among psychiatric nurses in China.Ten psychiatric hospitals were included. Burnout and QOL were measured using standardized instruments. Altogether, 1449 nurses completed the assessment. The mean scores of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and personal accomplishment (PA) were 11.87 (SD = 6.72), 6.98 (SD = 5.71) and 22.06 (SD = 8.67), respectively. Of the participants, 59.8% (95% CI: 57-62%) experienced burnout; with 23.3% (95% CI: 21-25%) in EE, 14.6% (95% CI: 13-16%) in DP and 45.1% (95% CI: 43-48%) in PA. Psychiatric nurses who reported burnout had lower QOL in social (F (1, 1448)  = 86.20, P < 0.001), physical (F (1, 1448)  = 170.46, P < 0.001), psychological (F (1, 1448)  = 205.63, P < 0.001), and environmental (F (1, 1448)  = 120.24, P < 0.001) domains. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that alcohol users (P = 0.04; OR = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.01-1.64 in model 1 and P = 0.03; OR = 1.32, 95%CI: 1.04-1.69 in model 2) were significantly more susceptible to burnout, while senior nurses (P = 0.007; OR = 0.70, 95%CI: 0.53-0.91) and nurses with longer work experience (P = 0.02; OR = 0.70, 95%CI: 0.53-0.91) were less likely to develop burnout. Burnout is common in psychiatric nurses in China. In light of its negative impact on health and QOL, there is an urgent need for regular screening as well as effective preventive measures and interventions to reduce burnout within this at-risk occupational group.

To make pollution evaluation of potentially hazardous elements in the soil more accurately, the regional geochemical baseline concentrations of eight potentially hazardous elements (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb) were established in Huilai County using cumulative frequency distribution curves. Then, the pollution load index and enrichment factor were applied to estimate the contamination levels, based on these geochemical baseline concentrations. The results suggested that topsoil was moderately polluted by potentially hazardous elements, while Cd pollution in the construction land and As pollution in the farmland was relatively severe. The possible sources of eight potentially hazardous elements were analyzed by correlation analysis, geostatistics and positive matrix factorization. Four sources have been determined and apportioned, namely industrial activities, natural sources, agricultural practices, and traffic emissions. Combining the health risk assessment with the source profiles, the health risks quantified from four sources were estimated under farmland, construction land, and woodland. The results showed that agricultural practices were the most main source of non-cancer and cancer risks under woodland and farmland for adults; industrial activities were the most main source of non-cancer and cancer risks under construction land for adults. Children's health risks, both carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic risk, were greater than adults, and the health risk trends of adults and children showed similarities. Therefore, agricultural practices under woodland and farmland should be controlled and managed as a priority, while industrial activities should be given priority to control and management under construction land., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors. An industrial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission inventory was developed in China in 2018. It was based on the emission factors method, using a revised and updated source classification system and emission factors of key industrial sources. Results showed that the total industrial VOCs emission in China in 2018 reached as high as 12698 kt. Processes using products containing VOCs were the largest contributors, accounting for 59% of the total emission. The industrial coating industry, printing, the basic organic chemical industry, gasoline storage and transport, and the oil refinery industry were the five largest emitters, accounting for 54% of the total emission. Guangdong, Shandong, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu were the four largest emission contributors, contributing to 41% of the total emission. Hainan, Ningxia, Tibet, Heilongjiang, and Xinjiang showed the largest VOCs emission intensities, with more than 80 t·(100 million yuan) -1 . Processes using products containing VOCs were the main emission contributors in most provinces. The uncertainty for the total industrial VOCs emission in 2018, based on a Monte Carlo simulation, was[-32%, 48%] at the 95% confidence interval.

Objective: Burnout is common in mental health nurses because of work-related stress. Burnout has a negative impact on nurses' health and work performance. The prevalence of high burnout in mental health nurses has been inconclusive across studies. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of high burnout in mental health nurses in China., Methods: Electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, CNKI, WanFang and SinoMed) were independently and systematically searched from their commencement date up to 14 May 2018. Studies that reported the prevalence of any of the 3 burnout dimensions (high Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP), and low Personal Accomplishment (PA)) as measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were included and analyzed using the random-effects model., Results: A total of 19 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of high EE was 28.1% (95% CI: 20.4-35.8%), DP was 25.4% (18.1-32.6%) and low PA was 39.7% (28.3-51.1%). Subgroup analyses found that short working experience, use of MBI-Human Services Survey (HSS), and younger age had moderating effects on prevalence of high burnout., Conclusions: Burnout is common in mental health nurses in China. BACKGROUND TaohongSiwu decoction (THSWT), a traditional herbal formula, has been used to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as essential hypertension (EH) in China. However, the pharmacological mechanism is not clear. To investigate the mechanisms of THSWT in the treatment of EH, we performed compounds, targets prediction and network analysis using a network pharmacology method. MATERIAL AND METHODS We selected chemical constituents and targets of THSWT according to TCMSP and UniProtKB databases and collected therapeutic targets on EH from Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), Drugbank and DisGeNET databases. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) was analyzed by using String database. Then network was constructed by using Cytoscape&#95;v3.7.1, and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment was performed by using Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) software. RESULTS The results of our network pharmacology research showed that the THSWT, composed of 6 Chinese herbs, contained 15 compounds, and 23 genes regulated the main signaling pathways related to EH. Moreover, the PPI network based on targets of THSWT on EH revealed the interaction relationship between targets. These core compounds were 6 of the 15 disease-related compounds in the network, kaempferol, quercetin, luteolin, Myricanone, beta-sitosterol, baicalein, and the core genes contained ADRB2, CALM1, HMOX1, JUN, PPARG, and VEGFA, which were regulated by more than 3 compounds and significantly associated with Calcium signaling pathway, cGMP-PKG signaling pathway, cAMP signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, Rap1 signaling pathway, and Ras signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS This network pharmacological study can reveal potential mechanisms of multi-target and multi-component THSWT in the treatment of EH, provide a scientific basis for studying the mechanism.

China has more patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) than most other countries in the world, making this condition a major public health concern. Population-based mortality of TBI in China is estimated to be approximately 13 cases per 100 000 people, which is similar to the rates reported in other countries. The implementation of various measures, such as safety legislation for road traffic, establishment of specialised neurosurgical intensive care units, and the development of evidence-based guidelines, have contributed to advancing prevention and care of patients with TBI in China. However, many challenges remain, which are augmented further by regional differences in TBI care. High-level care, such as intracranial pressure monitoring, is not universally available yet. In the past 30 years, the quality of TBI research in China has substantially improved, as evidenced by an increasing number of clinical trials done. The large number of patients with TBI and specialised trauma centres offer unique opportunities for TBI research in China. Furthermore, the formation and development of research collaborations between China and international groups are considered essential to advancing the quality of TBI care and research in China, and to improve quality of life in patients with this condition., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Nonferrous metallurgy is causing significant concerns due to its emissions of heavy metals into environment, degrading environmental quality, and consequently posing high risks to human health. In this study, the concentration levels of Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), and Arsenic (As) were investigated in soil, crop, well water, and fish samples collected around the Daye Copper Smelter in Hubei province, China, and the potential health risks were assessed for local children. The results showed that soils near the smelter were heavily polluted by Cd, Cu, Pb, and As, with the mean concentrations of 4.87, 195.26, 92.65, and 35.84 mg/kg, respectively, which were significantly higher than the values of soil Cd (0.18 mg/kg), Cu (32.84 mg/kg), Pb (28.46 mg/kg), and As (13.65 mg/kg) in the reference area (p < 0.001). The concentrations of Cd and As in vegetable samples collected from smelter-affected area exceeded the maximum permissible level (MPL) for food in China by 82% and 39%, respectively. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in rice grain harvested from smelter-affected area were 9.35 and 1.35 times higher than the corresponding MPL, respectively. The concentrations of Cd, As, and Cu in fish muscle from smelter-affected area exceeded the national MPL by 72%, 41%, and 24% of analyzed samples, respectively. The concentrations of Cd (p < 0.05) and As (p < 0.01) in well water were significantly higher in the smelter-affected area than those in the reference area, respectively. The health risks to local children in the smelter-affected area were 30.25 times higher than the acceptable level of 1, and most of the risks were resulted from Cd (46%), As (27%) and Pb (20%). Previous studies have indicated that vitamin D receptor (VDR) TaqI, BsmI, FokI and ApaI gene polymorphisms are associated with the risk of several inflammatory diseases. However, potential association of the VDR gene polymorphisms with susceptibility to extremity chronic osteomyelitis remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate link between VDR gene polymorphisms and the risk of extremity chronic osteomyelitis in Chinese population. A total of 233 patients with chronic osteomyelitis and 200 healthy controls were genotyped for the 4 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (TaqI, BsmI, FokI and ApaI) in VDR gene using the SNaPshot genotyping method. The frequencies of mutant allele C in rs731236 (P=0.044, OR=1.830, 95% CI 1.009 - 3.319) and rs2228570 (P=0.029, OR=1.347, 95% CI 1.031 - 1.761) were significantly higher in patients than those in healthy controls. In addition, outcomes of the logistic regression analysis adjusted by gender and age revealed that significant links were found between rs731236 (P=0.05, OR=1.887, 95% CI 1.001 - 3.558), rs2228570 (P=0.042, OR=1.594, 95% CI 1.016-2.500) and the risk of developing chronic osteomyelitis by dominant genetic model. In addition, significant association was also found between rs2228570 and the risk of developing the disease by homozygous model (P=0.034, OR=1.803, 95% CI 1.046 - 3.106). However, no significant correlations were found between BsmI (rs1544410) or ApaI (rs7975232) gene polymorphisms and the susceptibility to the disease. To our knowledge, we reported for the first time that VDR gene TaqI (rs731236) and FokI (rs2228570) polymorphisms may contribute to the increased risk of chronic osteomyelitis in Chinese population., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) is an important member of the cytochrome P450 enzyme superfamily, with 57 CYP2C9 allelic variants being previously reported. Recently, we identified 22 novel alleles (*36 -*56 and N418T) in the Han Chinese population. This study aims to assess the catalytic activities of wild-type (CYP2C9*1) and 36 CYP2C9 allelic variants found in the Chinese population toward phenytoin (PHT) in vitro. Insect microsomes expressing CYP2C9*1 and 36 CYP2C9 variants were incubated with 1-200 μM phenytoin for 30 min at 37 °C. Then, these products were extracted and the signal detection was performed by HPLC-MS/MS. The intrinsic clearance (Vmax/Km) values of all variants, with the exception of CYP2C9*2, CYP2C9*11, CYP2C9*23, CYP2C9*29, CYP2C9*34, CYP2C9*38, CYP2C9*44, CYP2C9*46 and CYP2C9*48, were significantly different from CYP2C9*1. CYP2C9*27, *40, *41, *47, *49, *51, *53, *54, *56 and N418T variant exhibited markedly larger values than CYP2C9*1 (>152.8%), whereas 17 variants exhibited smaller values (from 48.6% to 99.9%) due to larger Km and/or smaller Vmax values than CYP2C9*1. Bathymodiolid mussels dominate hydrothermal vents, cold methane/sulfide-hydrocarbon seeps, and other sites of organic enrichment. Here, we aimed to explore the innate immune system and detoxification mechanism of the deep sea mussel Bathymodiolus platifrons collected from a methane seep in the South China Sea. We sequenced the transcriptome of the mussels' gill, foot and mantle tissues and generated a transcriptomic database containing 96,683 transcript sequences. Based on GO and KEGG annotations, we reported transcripts that were related to the innate immune system, heavy metal detoxification and sulfide metabolic genes. Our in-depth analysis on the isoforms of peptidoglycan recognition protein (PGRP) that have different cellular location and potentially differential selectivity towards peptidoglycan (PGN) from gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were differentially expressed in different tissues. We also reported a potentially novel form of metallothionein and the production of phytochelatin in B. platifrons, which has not been reported in any of its coastal relative Mytilus mussel species. Overall, the present study provided new insights into heavy metal and sulfide metabolism in B. platifrons and can be served as the basis for future molecular studies on host-symbiont interactions in cold seep mussels.

When looking back to the literature regarding insomnia, it is believed that "disharmony of stomach leads to insomnia" is an important mechanism for the attack of insomnia. This theory is widely accepted in clinical practices by ancient and modern acupuncturists, thus the method treating insomnia from the stomach is developed. But deeper research on its mechanism is still lacking. Through correlation between stomach meridian and heart meridian, spleen and stomach being the pivot of rise and decline of qi movement and yin-yang and being the pivot of five zang-viscera housing spirit, modern abdomen-brain theory and experimental research, the mechanism of treating insomnia from the stomach is discussed in this paper, so as to be better to guide clinical acupoint-selection and treatment.

The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of aminoglycoside resistance and the prevalence of 6 important modifying enzyme genes, i.e. (strA, strB, aph(3')-IIa, aac(3)-IIa, aac(6')-Ib and ant(3")-Ia), in Escherichia coli strains in broilers with septicaemia in Hebei, China. 2. A total of 111 clinical isolates of E. coli were collected from 46 large-scale farms. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests, using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method, were performed on all 111 isolates. In addition, all were screened for the presence of modifying enzyme genes using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). 3. The results show that the rates of resistance were as follows: streptomycin: 97.3%, kanamycin: 97.0%, gentamicin: 95.5%, neomycin: 50.5%, amikacin: 46.0%, spectinomycin: 22.5%. Of the genes examined, strB (73.9%) was the most frequently identified gene in the phenotypic resistant isolates, followed in order by: ant(3")-Ia, aac(3)-IIa, aac(6')-Ib, aph(3')-IIa and strA. 4. It is concluded that aminoglycoside resistance in E. coli from broilers with septicaemia remains a serious problem in Hebei, China. This emphasises the need to ban the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics, discourage their misuse and to be continually vigilant by providing appropriate scientific and technological support for the poultry industry.

Objective: To investigate the common characteristics of the patients, relapse reasons of patients before and after surgery, evaluate the relapse rate and its impact factors, and therapeutic effect of patients accepted stereotactic surgery to treat opiate dependence in Sichuan., Methods: An investigation, using uniform questionnaires by face-to-face and telephone interview, and gaining data from medical records of patients, was conducted in Mar to Jun 2005, in Sichuan Province. 208 patients (total 212 patients participated in surgery) were invited to gather information about their common characteristics, drug-taking history and the surgery. Statistical methods including t-test, chi2 test and logistic regression were used to analyze the data., Results: (1) 181 male patients and 27 female patients participated in this study, and their mean age was (29.5 +/- 5.5) years. Most of the respondents were in Sichuan and some peripheral province, graduated from senior high school and over, and with various occupations. (2) All patients abused opiate before the surgery, and the average duration of drug-taking was (7.6 +/- 3.4) years. All patients were detoxified by unconstraint or compulsory abstinence before surgery, with mean drug abstinence of 13.9, but relapse occurred after each detoxification. (3) Suffering with no drugs and abstinence syndrome were the two main reasons of relapse before surgery. Compared with relapse before surgery, validating the effect of the surgery treating drug dependence and temptation by drug surroundings were the two main reasons of relapse after surgery. (4) The complication rate was 38.0% (79/208), no severe complications occurred in patients, and most of the complications disappeared or were healed before they were discharged from hospital. Relapse rate within 7 months after surgery was 22.1% (46/208). A significant decrease of relapse time, relapse dose, subjective feel on drugs and relapse euphoria appeared in patients who relapsed after surgery when compared with those before surgery. The univariate and multivariate analysis shows potential significant predictors of relapse rate after surgery to include education (OR = 3.259), operative time (OR = 2.451), social support (OR = 23.256) and doing simple work (OR = 3.328)., Conclusion: This investigation showed that the stereotactic surgery can eliminate psychological desire for drugs and abstinence syndrome among most of the patients. Satisfactorily short-term therapeutic effect and substantial decline in relapse rate as well as no severe complications were appeared in these patients. Relapse was greatly associated with education, operative time, neuropsychological factors, and social conditions of patients. The epidemiological survey of prevalence of NIDDM (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) and IGT(impaired glucose tolerance) was conducted among 9450 residents aged 25-70 in some areas of Hubei Province, China. The results show that NIDDM and IGT prevalences are 2.62% and 4.48%, respectively. There is no significant difference between male and female (P > 0.05). The NIDDM prevalence in cities is slightly higher than that in countryside, but the difference is not significant (P > 0.05). However, the IGT prevalence in city is significantly higher than that in countryside (P < 0.01). The prevalence of both NIDDM and IGT is increasing along with the age of the population. It is also significantly related to the family history of NIDDM, hypertension, and high body mass index (BMI). By using stepwise logistic regression to analyse the risk factors of NIDDM, age (OR = 1.86), BMI(OR = 2.69), family history (OR = 2.84) and hypertension (OR = 2.23) entered the model (significance level is alpha = 0.05).
