Objectives: This systematic review aimed to comprehensively understand the comorbidity of cerebral palsy (CP) in China. Methods: We searched through databases in both Chinese and English until December 2022 to gather cross-sectional studies on the comorbidity of CP in China. After two reviewers independently screened the articles, collected the data, and assessed the bias risk, a meta-analysis was conducted using the Stata 17.0 software. Results: A total of 73 articles were included. Of these, 16 articles reported total comorbidity, with a prevalence of 79.7% (95% CI: 73.8-85.7%); 56 articles reported epilepsy, with a prevalence of 17.9% (95% CI: 15.4-20.4%); 48 articles reported intellectual disability, with a prevalence of 58.0% (95% CI: 51.8-64.3%); 32 articles reported speech disorders, with a prevalence of 48.0% (95% CI: 41.6-54.4%); 41 articles reported hearing disorders, with a prevalence of 17.2% (95% CI: 13.0-21.4%); and 35 articles reported vision disorders, with a prevalence of 23.1% (95% CI: 16.3-29.8%). The topographical type of CP was the primary source of heterogeneity in the prevalence of epilepsy. Diagnostic criteria for CP, clinical type of CP, GMFCS, publishing time, and topographical type of CP were the primary sources of heterogeneity in the prevalence of intellectual disability. Clinical type of CP and topographical type were the primary sources of heterogeneity in the prevalence of speech disorders. Finally, the region was the primary source of heterogeneity in the prevalence of hearing disorders. Conclusion: The prevalence of comorbidities in CP is high in China. Comorbidities are related to the characteristics, severity, and risk factors of brain insult and have a particular relationship with regional economic development and medical and health levels. Whether there are differences in direct oral anticoagulants efficacy and safety in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) combined with hypertension is unclear. We therefore conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study to assess the differences in the efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants in patients with AF combined with hypertension. This multicenter retrospective cohort study was based on data from 15 centers in China and included 2086 patients with AF. We divided the patients into dabigatran and rivaroxaban groups according to their direct oral anticoagulants. Propensity score matching was used to balance the covariates between the groups. Due to our limited sample size, the number of cases of some clinical events with low incidence was small. During a mean follow‐up period of 10 months, a total of 268 (12.9%) bleeding events occurred, including 27 (1.3%) major bleeding events and 241 (11.6%) minor bleeding events, and 45 (2.2%) thromboembolic events. In patients with AF combined with hypertension, rivaroxaban was associated with a higher major bleeding incidence than dabigatran (odds ratio [OR], 2.89 [95% confidence interval [CI, 1.22‐6.87]; P =.012). In contrast, the risk of thromboembolism and minor bleeding was similar for rivaroxaban (OR, 0.55 [95%CI, 0.29‐1.01]; P =.069) and dabigatran (OR, 0.82 [95%CI, 0.63‐1.08]; P =.150). Based on the results of this study, in patients with AF and hypertension treated with direct oral anticoagulants, the incidence of thromboembolism and minor bleeding was not statistically different between dabigatran and rivaroxaban, but compared with rivaroxaban, dabigatran was associated with a lower risk of major bleeding. Background: The number of elderly with mental disorders is increasing, but few studies have been concerned with the physical condition and activities of daily living (ADL) of these patients. This study aims to describe the physical condition and ADL of patients with mental illnesses (PMI) from different age groups, which provides evidence to improve mental health services for PMI. Methods: In this prospective cross‐sectional study, the samples were divided into three groups of less than 60 years old (group 1), 60–74 years old (group 2), and over 75 years old (group 3) for comparison. Participants' ADL and physical condition were measure by Barthel Index (BI), Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ), Standardised swallowing assessment (SSA) and Short Form of Mini Nutrition Assessment (MNA‐SF). The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and the Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE) were used to measure psychological condition. Results: Totally, 392 participants had been recruited, meanwhile 86% of them were diagnosed with at least one physical disease. There were statistically significant differences in the three groups of participants in BI (F = 50.603, P < 0.001), FAQ (F = 40.332, P < 0.001), SSA (F = 28.574, P < 0.001), and MNA‐SF (F = 18.366, P < 0.001). Group 2 and group 3 had significantly lower scores in BI and FAQ than group 1, and the SSA scores were significantly higher than the participants in group 1. In the negative symptoms subscale of BPRS, the mean score of group 3 was significantly higher than groups 1 and 2. Negative symptom subscale has different degrees of correlation with BI (r = −0.537), FAQ (r = 0.643), SSA (r = 0.480), MNA (r = −0.325) and MMSE (r = 0.607). In addition, the participants with comorbidities were related to BI (r = ‐0.364). Conclusion: Somatic comorbidities play a pivotal role in the clinical characteristics of elderly patients with mental illness, thus greater effort should be paid to elderly patients suffering from mental illness with dysphagia, malnutrition, and cognitive decline. Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is an extremely rare condition. Information regarding the disease burden of PMP in developing countries is limited. This study aimed to determine the epidemiology of PMP in China. PMP data were extracted from the national databases of Urban Basic Medical Insurance. All cases were identified using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes and Chinese diagnostic terms. The national prevalence from 2012 to 2016 and incidence in 2016 were estimated. In total, 153 patients with PMP were identified. The crude prevalence of PMP in 2016 was 2.47 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.71 to 3.23) per million person-year, with a higher prevalence in females than males. Prevalence increased with age, with the first peak in those aged 15–29 years and the highest in those aged >80 years. The crude incidence of PMP in 2016 was 1.19 (95% CI 0.59 to 1.78) per million person-years. Similar to the prevalence, the rates were higher in women than in men. The incidence also increased with age, with the highest prevalence in those aged >80 years. Besides, the most frequent comorbidities before and after the first diagnosis of PMP were unspecified secondary malignancies and malignancies of unspecified sites, followed by abdominal malignant tumours. The rate of PMP was lower in mainland China than in European countries and increased with advancing age. Women were more likely to have PMP than men. The 2019 GINA guidance incorporates the presence of T2 inflammation in severe asthma patients to determine eligibility for add-on biologic therapy, though little data exists to characterize this population. The objective of this manuscript is to conduct a descriptive analysis to characterize patients with severe asthma in emerging countries based on disease severity, patient exacerbation history, and T2 phenotype. A cross-sectional survey of physicians treating asthma patients ages 12 years and older was conducted in eight countries. Physicians characterized their severe asthma patients and reported data from their patients' medical charts. Medical chart data was selected from the physicians' six most recent asthma patients taking prescription medication. A total of 550 physicians completed the survey and filled out 3,300 patient record forms. A total of 876 patients have been characterized with uncontrolled severe asthma. Of the 420 patients with available EOS lab data, 40% are indicated with T2 inflammation (EOS ≥150/µL). Ninety-one percent of all patients with available IgE lab data (n = 498) had IgE 30 − 1500 IU/mL indicating allergy-driven asthma. Finally, chronic OCS use (as reported by physicians) was reported in 11% of patients. This research revealed that 65% of patients had at least one of three T2 inflammation comorbidities assessed: allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, and atopic dermatitis. Discrepancies were observed between patients' treatment regimens and GINA step reported, suggesting there may be room to improve understanding of asthma severity as defined per GINA guidelines as well as asthma control assessment in clinical practice. The Motor tic, Obsessions and Compulsions, Vocal tic Evaluation Survey (MOVES) is a widely used screening tool for Tourette syndrome (TS) and associated comorbidities. This study evaluated its applicability for children in China using 7,125 participants from the National Center for Children’s Health (Beijing). Psychometric evaluations included exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, yielding a 16-item, four-factor model that explained 55.11% of the variance and demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.88) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.86). The scale showed strong convergent, discriminant, and criterion-related validity and was significantly correlated with other established TS scales. The results affirm the reliability and validity of the MOVES for screening TS in Asian contexts, addressing a crucial gap in the region’s TS assessment tools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are both significant public health problems in China. Results of previous studies on the prevalence of DM among TB patients in China are inconsistent. We conducted this systematic review and meta‐analysis to estimate the overall prevalence of DM among TB patients in China. Methods: We systematically searched Excerpta Medica Database, PubMed, Global Health, Ovid MEDLINE(R), Chinese Biomedical Literature Service System, and China Online Journals −Health & Medicine and included all observational studies reporting prevalence of DM among TB patients in China. The Cochran's Q‐statistic and I2 were used to test heterogeneity. Finally, a random‐effect model meta‐analysis was conducted to estimate the pooled prevalence of DM among TB patients in China using R studio. Results: We screened 7043 articles and identified 43 eligible studies. The pooled prevalence was 7.8% (95% prediction interval 1.6–30.5, I2 = 99.2%). The highest prevalence was observed in Northeast China (21.9%) among four economic regions of China, followed by East Coast (8.3%), Western China (5.9%), with Central China having the lowest prevalence (5.1%). Higher prevalence was observed in urban (10.1%) than in rural (7.8%) areas, and in hospital‐based (9.0%) than in population‐based studies (6.9%). Conclusions: This study suggests that the prevalence of DM among TB patients in China aligns with the overall DM prevalence among the public in China. Introduction: Due to aging, older adults with cancer (OAC) may be confronted with a complex interplay of multiple age-related issues; coupled with receiving cancer treatment, OAC may experience multiple concurrent symptoms that require the identification of the core symptom for effective management. Constructing symptom networks will help in the identification of core symptoms and help achieve personalized and precise interventions. Currently, few studies have used symptom networks to identify core symptoms in OAC. Our objectives were to construct symptom networks of OAC, explore the core symptoms, and compare the differences in symptom networks among various subgroups., Materials and Methods: Secondary analysis was performed using data from 485 OAC collected in 2021 from a cross-sectional survey named the Shanghai CANcer Survivor (SCANS) Report. The MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI) was used to assess the incidence and severity of cancer-related symptoms. We used the R package to construct symptom networks and identify the centrality indices. The network comparison test was used to compare network differences among the subgroups., Results: The most common and severe symptoms reported were fatigue, disturbed sleep, and difficulty remembering. The network density was 0.718. Vomiting (r s  = 1.81, r b  = 2.13), fatigue (r s  = 1.54, r b  = 1.93), and sadness (r s  = 0.81, r b  = 0.69) showed the highest strength values, which suggested that these symptoms were more likely to co-occur with other symptoms. The network comparison tests showed significant differences in symptom network density between the subgroups categorized as survival "< 5 years" and survival "≥ 5 years" (p = 0.002), as well as between the those with comorbidities and those without comorbidities (p = 0.037)., Discussion: Our study identified symptom networks in 485 OAC. Vomiting, fatigue, and sadness were important symptoms in the symptom networks of OAC. The symptom networks differed among populations with different survival durations and comorbidities. Our network analysis provides a reference for future targeted symptom management and interventions in OAC. Background: The coexistence of chronic diseases among people with stroke is common. However, little is known about the extent of incremental healthcare expenditures associated with having physically and psychologically chronic conditions among stroke survivors.Methods: We used the nationally representative data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey, including 36,076 participants enrolled as our analytic cohort of ten years of follow-up visits (2006, 2009, 2011, 2015). Chronic conditions include hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and impaired cognitive function. Two-part models were used to estimate the effect of comorbid chronic conditions on total annual healthcare expenditure, out-of-pocket (OOP) healthcare expenditure, and incidence of catastrophic healthcare expenditure (CHE).Results: Among survivors of stroke during 2006 to 2015, the prevalence rates of hypertension, diabetes, obesity and impaired cognitive function were 75.5, 9.8, 12.7 and 65.1%, significantly higher than those among adults without stroke history (27.9, 2.7, 10.0 and 41.2%). Having hypertension ($794.5, p = 0.004), diabetes ($3978.5, p < 0.001) were associated with the largest incremental total healthcare expenditures. Stroke survivors with diagnosed hypertension and diabetes had additional 5.7 (p < 0.001) and 10.4 (p < 0.001) percentage point of CHE rate, respectively. Total healthcare expenditures were $2413.0 (P < 0.001) and $5151.7 (P < 0.001) higher among patients with 2, and ≥ 3 chronic conditions, respectively, than those individuals with no chronic conditions.Conclusions: Excess expenditures associated with chronic diseases were substantial among stroke survivors. These results highlight the needs for both prevention and better management of multimorbidity among stroke survivors, which in turn may lower the financial burden of treating these concurrent comorbidities. Background and purpose: The aim was to determine the transitional patterns in the clinical characteristics, treatments and comorbidities in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients over the past 14 years using data from a large clinical cohort in mainland China. Methods: Sporadic ALS patients who visited the Peking University Third Hospital from January 2005 to December 2018 were included in this study. The 14 years were divided into three periods, and changes in the baseline characteristics of the participants were analyzed at 5‐year intervals. Results: In total, 3410 patients with sporadic ALS were recruited: 2181 were men and 1229 were women. The proportion of patients with bulbar‐onset ALS increased from 13.0% in 2005–2009 to 19.5% in 2015–2018 (p < 0.001). The mean (standard deviation) age at onset increased from 49.5 (11.4) years in 2005–2009 to 53.0 (11.0) years in 2015–2018 (p < 0.001). ALS patients with diabetes or hypertension showed a delay in ALS onset, and the delay was even more apparent when the patients had both comorbidities. The proportion of riluzole users in 2015–2018 was approximately 2.5‐fold of that in 2005–2009 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: In the context of a lack of clinical data on ALS in mainland China, this study evaluated a large cohort of patients diagnosed over a 14‐year period. The age at onset and percentage of patients who used riluzole both increased over the study period. Objectives: The co-occurrence of chronic diseases in the elderly is a common problem. However, the relationship between comorbidities and the prognosis of elderly patients with COVID-19 was not clear. This study was supposed to describe the clinical characteristics of elderly patients with COVID-19 infection from Sichuan province and the effects of comorbidity. Design: A retrospective study. Settings and participants: COVID-19 patients from Public Health Clinical Center of Chengdu between December 16, 2019 and February 26, 2020 were included in this study. Patients were divided into elderly group (≥60 years old) and non-elderly group (< 60 years old). Results: Elderly patients with COVID-19 indicated relatively higher proportion of comorbidities, and the most common were atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (56.5%), hypertension (43.5%) and chronic pulmonary disease (21.7%). The proportion of severe cases was higher in elderly group than that in non-elderly group (73.9% and 42.2%, respectively, P=0.012). During hospitalization, elderly patients indicated relatively higher proportion of complications, such as shock (21.7%), respiratory failure (21.7%). The proportion of patients with a decreased number of CD8+ lymphocytes (82.6%) and B lymphocytes (77.8%) in elderly patients was significantly higher than that in non-elderly group (48.9% and 44.8%, respectively). All 3 deaths were elderly patients with comorbidities and the cell counts of T lymphocyte subsets, B and NK cells of them were significantly decreased at admission. Conclusions: Elderly patients with COVID-19 had a high proportion of severe cases and comorbidities, more likely to show low immune function, and indicate higher proportion of complications. Background: The Basic Public Health Service (BPHS), a recently announced free healthcare program, aims to combat the most prevalent Noncommunicable Disease-"Hypertension" (HTN)-and its risk factors on a nationwide scale. In China, there is a rife that HTN less impacts women during their lifetime. We, therefore, aimed to evaluate the sex disparity in hypertension patients with comorbidities among south-west Chinese and the contribution of BPHS to address that concern., Methods: We have opted for a multistage stratified random sampling method to enroll hypertensive patients of 35 years and older, divided them into BPHS and non-BPHS groups. We assessed the sex disparity in HTN patients with four major comorbidities- Dyslipidemia, Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), and descriptive data were compiled. Odds ratios from logistic regression models estimated the effectiveness of BPHS in the management of HTN with comorbidities., Results: Among 1521 hypertensive patients,1011(66.5%) were managed in the BPHS group. The proportion of patients who had at least one comorbidity was 70.7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 66.3-76.8%), patients aged 65 years and older were more likely to have coexisting comorbidities. Participants who received the BPHS showed significant blood pressure (BP) control with two comorbidities (odds ratio [OR] = 2.414, 95% CI: 1.276-4.570), three or more (OR = 5.500, 95%CI: 1.174-25.756). Patients with dyslipidemia and DM also benefited from BPHS in controlling BP (OR = 2.169, 95% CI: 1.430-3.289) and (OR = 2.785, 95%CI: 1.242-6.246), respectively. In certain high-income urban survey centers, there was sex differences in the HTN management provided by BPHS, with men having better BP control rates than women., Conclusions: Perhaps this is the first study in China to succinctly show the effectiveness and sex disparity regarding "management of hypertensive comorbidities". This supports that the BPHS program plays a pivotal role in controlling BP, therefore should recommend the national healthcare system to give women a foremost priority in BPHS, especially to those from low-socioeconomic and low-scientific literacy regions., (© 2024. Purpose: To explore the clinical, epidemiological, and viral load characteristics of COVID-19 caused by the omicron variant. Methods: Based on the COVID-19 epidemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2 broke out in Shanghai, China. To analyze whether there is any association between clinical symptoms and viral load of COVID-19 with age, sex, and combined disease and whether the clinical symptoms and viral load are associated with vaccine-breakthrough infections. Results: The most common symptoms were cough, expectoration, and fatigue, which were more common in women than males (p < 0.001). The average viral clearance time in the > 75 years group was the longest (6.64 days). The viral load in the 60-75 years group was significantly higher than that in the other groups (p < 0.001). The 18-45 years old group had the most clinical symptoms at admission (45.39%). The days of nucleic acid-negative conversion, average viral load, highest viral load, and clinical symptoms in comorbid chronic disease patients are longer (p < 0.001). The average and highest viral loads in the unvaccinated group were longer than those in the vaccine breakthrough infection groups (p < 0.001). However, the clinical symptoms in the vaccine breakthrough infection group were significantly more severe than those in the unvaccinated group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: We found that female patients, the elderly, and those with underlying comorbidities had longer clinical positive symptoms and viral loads. Several COVID-19 patients have overlapping comorbidities. The independent role of each component contributing to the risk of COVID-19 is unknown, and how some non-cardiometabolic comorbidities affect the risk of COVID-19 remains unclear. A retrospective follow-up design was adopted. A total of 1,160 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled from nine provinces in China. Data on comorbidities were obtained from the patients' medical records. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of the associations between comorbidities (cardiometabolic or non-cardiometabolic diseases), clinical severity, and treatment outcomes of COVID-19. Overall, 158 (13.6%) patients were diagnosed with severe illness and 32 (2.7%) had unfavorable outcomes. Hypertension (2.87, 1.30–6.32), type 2 diabetes (T2DM) (3.57, 2.32–5.49), cardiovascular disease (CVD) (3.78, 1.81–7.89), fatty liver disease (7.53, 1.96–28.96), hyperlipidemia (2.15, 1.26–3.67), other lung diseases (6.00, 3.01–11.96), and electrolyte imbalance (10.40, 3.00–26.10) were independently linked to increased odds of being severely ill. T2DM (6.07, 2.89–12.75), CVD (8.47, 6.03–11.89), and electrolyte imbalance (19.44, 11.47–32.96) were also strong predictors of unfavorable outcomes. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease on admission (5.46, 3.25–9.19), while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes (6.58, 1.46–29.64) within two weeks. Besides hypertension, diabetes, and CVD, fatty liver disease, hyperlipidemia, other lung diseases, and electrolyte imbalance were independent risk factors for COVID-19 severity and poor treatment outcome. SARS-CoV-2 has caused a worldwide pandemic that began with an outbreak of pneumonia cases in the Hubei province of China. Knowledge of those most at risk is integral for treatment, guideline implementation, and resource allocation. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate comorbidities associated with severe and fatal cases of COVID-19. A search was conducted on PubMed and EmBase on 20 April 2020. Pooled estimates were collected using a random-effects model. Thirty-three studies were included in the systematic review and twenty-two in the meta-analysis. Of the total cases 40.80% (95%CI: 35.49%, 46.11%) had comorbidities, while fatal cases had 74.37% (95%CI: 55.78%, 86.97%). Hypertension was more prevalent in severe [47.65% (95%CI: 35.04%, 60.26%)] and fatal [47.90% (95%CI: 40.33%, 55.48%)] cases compared to total cases [14.34% (95%CI: 6.60%, 28.42%)]. Diabetes was more prevalent among fatal cases [24.89% (95%CI: 18.80%, 32.16%)] compared to total cases [9.65% (95%CI: 6.83%, 13.48%)]. Respiratory diseases had a higher prevalence in fatal cases [10.89% (95%CI: 7.57%, 15.43%)] in comparison to total cases [3.65% (95%CI: 2.16%, 6.1%)]. Studies assessing the mechanisms accounting for the associations between severe cases and hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory diseases are crucial in understanding this new disease, managing patients at risk, and developing policies and guidelines that will reduce future risk of severe COVID-19 disease. Background: Psychiatric readmissions negatively impact patients and their families while increasing healthcare costs. This study aimed at investigating factors associated with psychiatric readmissions within 30 days and 1 year of the index admissions and exploring the possibilities of monitoring and improving psychiatric care quality in China. Methods: Data on index admission, subsequent admission(s), clinical and hospital-related factors were extracted in the inpatient medical record database covering 10 secondary and tertiary psychiatric hospitals in Beijing, China. Logistic regressions were used to examine the associations between 30-day and 1-year readmissions plus frequent readmissions (≥3 times/year), and clinical variables as well as hospital characteristics. Results: The 30-day and 1-year psychiatric readmission rates were 16.69% (1289/7724) and 33.79% (2492/7374) respectively. 746/2492 patients (29.34%) were readmitted 3 times or more within a year (frequent readmissions). Factors significantly associated with the risk of both 30-day and 1-year readmission were residing in an urban area, having medical comorbidities, previous psychiatric admission(s), length of stay > 60 days in the index admission and being treated in tertiary hospitals (p < 0.001). Male patients were more likely to have frequent readmissions (OR 1.30, 95%CI 1.04–1.64). Receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was significantly associated with a lower risk of 30-day readmission (OR 0.72, 95%CI 0.56–0.91) and frequent readmissions (OR 0.60, 95%CI 0.40–0.91). Conclusion: More than 30% of the psychiatric inpatients were readmitted within 1 year. Urban residents, those with medical comorbidities and previous psychiatric admission(s) or a longer length of stay were more likely to be readmitted, and men are more likely to be frequently readmitted. ECT treatment may reduce the likelihood of 30-day readmission and frequent admissions. Purpose: To investigate the precipitating factors of heart failure (HF) and to investigate the maternal and neonatal outcomes in pregnant women with HF.Methods: We reviewed the medical records of pregnant women with HF who were treated at West China Second University Hospital between September 2012 and September 2017. We recorded baseline characteristics, onset and treatment of HF, comorbidities, modes of delivery, and maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. Chi-square tests or Fisher's exact tests were used to explore the comorbidities in different subgroups.Results: Seventy pregnant women with HF were identified. The most common pregnancy-specific conditions were severe preeclampsia (36/70, 51.43%) and multiple pregnancies (16/70, 22.86%). The most common nonpregnancy-specific conditions were lung infections (34/70, 48.57%) and cardiac problems (25/70, 35.71%). Sixty patients (85.71%) developed HF during pregnancy. Sixty-seven pregnancies (95.71%) ended in cesarean section. Three maternal deaths (4.29%) from HF were recorded. Of the 87 fetuses, three fetuses (3.45%) ended in miscarriages and stillbirth occurred in 5.75% of fetuses. The mean birth weight of a neonate was 2174.49 ± 609.57 (817-3430) g. There were eight neonatal deaths (8/79, 10.13%). The incidence of lung infection (P = 0.031) or cardiac problems (P = 0.044) differs between patients with NYHA classes II and patients with NYHA classes III/IV. The incidence of lung infection (P = 0.006) was also different in patients with prenatal HF and patients with postpartum HF.Conclusion: Peripartum HF is associated with high maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Introduction: Few studies have examined the epidemiology of herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) in China. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of HZ and PHN in China, and to examine the clinical characteristics of patients identified with PHN. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 24 hospitals in seven cities in China. Prevalence of HZ and PHN was determined by physician (n = 100) chart review of patients (n = 36,170) aged ≥ 40 years seeking medical care over a 30- to 60-day period. The health history of patients identified with PHN was obtained and included time since diagnosis of HZ or PHN, time since onset of PHN-related pain, and the methods used for diagnosing HZ and PHN. Results: The prevalence rates of HZ and PHN were 7.7% [95% confidence interval (CI) 7.5–8.0] and 2.3% (95% CI 2.2–2.5), respectively. Of patients with HZ, 29.8% developed PHN. Rates of HZ and PHN increased with age and were highest in patients aged ≥ 70 years (10.6% and 4.1%, respectively). The majority of patients with PHN were diagnosed with HZ (80.9%) and PHN (83.8%) for < 1 year, and had experienced PHN-related pain for < 1 year (80.5%). Patient description and clinical examination were most commonly used to diagnose HZ and PHN. Conclusion: These results provide current estimates of the prevalence of HZ and PHN in the general adult population in urban China. Purpose: We aimed to examine the associations of comorbidities with self-reported sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and insomnia among Chinese adults., Methods: The study used data from a community-based cross-sectional survey performed in China in 2018-2020. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations of 12 comorbidities with SDB and insomnia., Results: A total of 4329 Han Chinese adults aged ≥ 18 years were enrolled. Of these, 1970 (45.5%) were male, with a median age of 48 years (interquartile range: 34-59). Compared with the participants without any conditions, adjusted ORs for SDB and insomnia for those with ≥ 4 comorbidities were 2.33 (95% CI: 1.58, 3.43, P-trend < 0.001) and 3.89 (95% CI: 2.69, 5.64, P-trend < 0.001), respectively. Seven comorbidities (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease (CHD), bone and joint disease, neck or lumbar disease, chronic digestive diseases, and chronic urological disease) were positively associated with both SDB and insomnia. Cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were also independently associated with insomnia. Of all comorbidities, cancer was most strongly associated with insomnia (OR = 3.16; 95% CI: 1.78, 5.63; P < 0.001), and CHD was most strongly associated with SDB (OR = 1.77; 95% CI: 1.19, 2.64; P < 0.001)., Conclusions: The findings showed that adults with an increasing number of comorbidities had higher odds for SDB and insomnia, which were independent of sociodemographic and lifestyle factors., (© 2023. Background: The impact of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) on the life span of residents in a transitioning region has not been studied in depth. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the changes in AMI-related resident deaths in a transitioning region in China., Methods: A longitudinal, population-based study was performed to analyze the deaths with/of AMI in Pudong New Area (PNA), Shanghai from 2005 to 2021. The average annual percentage change (AAPC) of AMI in crude mortality rates (CMR), age-standardized mortality rates worldwide (ASMRW), and rates of years of life lost (YLLr) were calculated by the joinpoint regression. The impact of demographic and non-demographic factors on the mortality of residents who died with/of AMI was quantitatively analyzed by the decomposition method., Results: In 7,353 residents who died with AMI, 91.74% (6,746) of them were died of AMI from 2005 to 2021. In this period, the CMR and ASMRW of residents died with/of AMI were 15.23/10 5 and 5.17/10 5 person-years, the AAPC of CMR was 0.01% (95% CI: -0.71,0.72, p = 0.989) and 0.06% (95% CI: -0.71,0.84, p = 0.868), and the ASMRW decreased by 2.83% (95% CI: -3.66,-2.00, p < 0.001) and 2.76% (95% CI: -3.56,-1.95, p < 0.001), respectively. The CMR of people died of AMI showed a downward trend (all p < 0.05) in people ≥60 years but an upward trend [AAPC = 2.47% (95% CI: 0.07,4.94, p = 0.045)] in people of 45-59 years. • Sildenafil use accounted for 13.3% of licit use in China. • Sildenafil use was significantly higher in North China than South China. • Sildenafil use was positively correlated with allopurinol and hydrochlorothiazide. • Smoking and drinking increase the consumption of sildenafil. Sildenafil (SIL) is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. Information on its consumption and the factors influencing its use is limited in China. In this study, we sampled composite influent wastewater samples from 33 Chinese cities and analyzed SIL using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. SIL consumption was estimated using wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) and ranged from 10.6 mg/d/1000 people to 132 mg/d/1000 people, with a mean of 53 mg/d/1000 people. Prescription sales (3570 kg) accounted for 13.3% of the estimated SIL use (26842 kg) in 2018, thereby implying that SIL illicit use was greater than prescription use in China. Some regional differences were observed in SIL use, which was significantly higher in North China than South China (p < 0.05), thereby reflecting that the prevalence of SIL was affected by differences in lifestyle and socioeconomic factors. We found significant positive correlations between SIL use and consumption of allopurinol, hydrochlorothiazide, nicotine, and alcohol, thereby suggesting that the prevalence of SIL was associated with the prevalence of gout, hypertension, smoking, and drinking. Moreover, age structures, internet use, and marriage rates were positively correlated with SIL use, whereas the unemployment rate was negatively correlated with SIL use. Our study demonstrates that WBE is valuable for medical research to investigate licit and illicit drug use and to assess the underlying associations of different chemical uses. Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an independent risk factor for functional limitations among the older population. The predicted increase in T2DM cases combined with the ongoing rapidly aging population may further burden the already overloaded healthcare system and aggravate the loss of economic self-sufficiency. This study aimed to investigate the activities of daily living (ADL) and its influencing factors on older people with T2DM, and to provide implications for the development and improvement of community nursing services in the context rapidly aging population in China., Methods: From March 2019 to June 2020, we conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey among older T2DM patients in Fuzhou, using a multi-stage cluster sampling approach. Functional status was measured by the Lawton ADL scale. Stata "nptrend" test was used to examine the trend of ordinal variables on ADL. Non-conditional logistic regression was used to identify factors affecting ADL limitations., Results: A total of 2016 questionnaires were received, with a response rate of 96%. 12.4% of participants suffered from varying degrees of functional impairment. ADL limitations increased with age. More comorbidities were associated with a greater risk of developing functional limitations in ADLs. the following sub-groups were more likely to suffer from ADL impairment: those aged 70 and over years (OR = 1.99, 95%CI 1.77-2.56), living in an aged care house or with spouse/children (OR = 2.31, 95%CI 1.25-4.26), low monthly income (OR = 1.49, 95%CI 1.28-1.64), without health insurance (OR = 1.82, 95%CI 1.40-2.40), tight family expenses (OR = 1.95, 95%CI 1.42-2.69), having stroke (OR = 6.70, 95%CI 2.22-20.23) or malignant tumor (OR = 4.45, 95%CI 1.27-15.53), irregular eating habit (OR = 2.55, 95%CI 2.23-2.92), smoking (OR = 1.40, 95%CI 1.22-1.60), sedentary lifestyle (OR = 2.04, 95%CI 1.46-2.85), lack of physical exercise (OR = 1.35, 95%CI 1.19-1.53), sleeping difficulty (OR = 1.25, 95%CI 1.10-1.42), and lack of family support (OR = 1.19, 95%CI 1.10-1.29)., Conclusion: Older adults (≥70 years) with T2DM had a high prevalence of functional limitations across a range of daily living tasks, which not only affect individual life of quality but also present a huge burden on the family, health services system, and the whole society. Ambient carbon monoxide (CO) is associated with bronchitis morbidity, but there is no evidence concerning its correlation with hospitalization costs for bronchitis patients. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between short-term ambient CO exposure and hospitalization costs for bronchitis patients in Chongqing, China. Baseline data for 3162 hospitalized bronchitis patients from November 2013 to December 2019 were collected. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the association, delayed and cumulative, between short-term CO exposure and hospitalization costs. Additionally, subgroup analyses were performed by gender, age, season, and comorbidity. Positive association between CO and hospitalization costs for bronchitis patients was observed. The strongest association was observed at lag 015 days, with per 1 mg/m 3 increase of CO concentrations corresponded to 5834.40 Chinese Yuan (CNY) (95% CI: 2318.71, 9350.08; P < 0.001) (845.97 US dollars) increment in hospitalization costs. Stratified analysis results showed that the association was more obvious among those males, elderly, with comorbidities, and in warm seasons. More importantly, there was strongest correlation between CO and bronchitis patients with coronary heart disease. In summary, short-term exposure to ambient CO, even lower than Chinese and WHO standards, can be associated with increased hospitalization costs for bronchitis. Controlling CO exposure can be helpful to reduce medical burden associated with bronchitis patients. Background: Evidence on the effects of the air pollutants on the hospital admissions, hospital cost and length of stay (LOS) among patients with comorbidities remains limited in China, particularly for patients with cardiovascular diseases and comorbid diabetes mellitus (CVD-DM)., Methods: We collected daily data on CVD-DM patients from 242 hospitals in Beijing between 2014 and 2019. Generalized additive model was employed to quantify the associations between admissions, LOS, and hospital cost for CVD-DM patients and air pollutants. We further evaluated the attributable risk posed by air pollutants to CVD-DM patients, using both Chinese and WHO air quality guidelines as reference., Results: Per 10 ug/m 3 increase of particles with an aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ), particles with an aerodynamic diameter < 10 μm (PM 10 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), carbonic oxide (CO) and ozone (O 3 ) corresponded to a 0.64% (95% CI: 0.57 to 0.71), 0.52% (95% CI: 0.46 to 0.57), 0.93% (95% CI: 0.67 to 1.20), 0.98% (95% CI: 0.81 to 1.16), 1.66% (95% CI: 1.18 to 2.14) and 0.53% (95% CI: 0.45 to 0.61) increment for CVD-DM patients' admissions. Among the six pollutants, particulate pollutants (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ) in most lag days exhibited adverse effects on LOS and hospital cost. For every 10 ug/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 and PM 10 , the absolute increase with LOS will increase 62.08 days (95% CI: 28.93 to 95.23) and 51.77 days (95% CI:22.88 to 80.66), respectively. The absolute increase with hospital cost will increase 105.04 Chinese Yuan (CNY) (95% CI: 49.27 to 160.81) and 81.76 CNY (95% CI: 42.01 to 121.51) in PM 2.5 and PM 10 , respectively. Given WHO 2021 air quality guideline as the reference, PM 2.5 had the maximum attributable fraction of 3.34% (95% CI: 2.94% to 3.75%), corresponding to an avoidable of 65,845 (95% CI: 57,953 to 73,812) patients with CVD-DM., Conclusion: PM 2.5 and PM 10 are positively associated with hospital admissions, hospital cost and LOS for patients with CVD-DM. Background: The association between ozone and ischemic stroke has been widely reported; however, the association among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) has remained largely unknown., Methods: The time series data of daily morbidity and concentrations of ozone from 2014 to 2018 were collected in Beijing, China. A time-stratified case-crossover study combined with a distributed lag nonlinear model was used to estimate the ozone effect on stroke morbidity among T2D patients. Based on principal diagnosis, ischemic stroke cases were identified according to the International Classification of Diseases (I63), and a history of T2D was coded as E12., Results: A total of 149,757 hospital admissions for ischemic stroke among T2D patients were recorded in Beijing. Approximately U-shaped exposure-response curves were observed for ozone and ischemic stroke morbidity among T2D patients. With a reference at 54.91 μg/m 3 , extreme-low (5th: 9.59 μg/m 3 ) ozone was significantly associated with a decreased risk for ischemic stroke [RR = 0.88, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.80-0.98]. Subgroup analysis showed that extremely low-ozone (5th) level only had a significant protective effect in males and elderly population, with a RR value of 0.86 (95% CI: 0.76-0.97) and 0.85 (95% CI: 0.75-0.96), respectively. Extreme-high ozone (99th: 157.06 μg/m 3 ) was significantly associated with an increased risk for ischemic stroke (RR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.12-1.57). The effect size was 1.34 (95% CI: 1.10-1.63) for males and 1.32 (95% CI: 1.07-1.63) for females, and the difference was not significant (Z = -0.29, P = 0.77). The effect size in younger adults was significantly higher than that in participants aged ≥65 years [1.52 (95% CI: 1.21-1.91) vs. 1.22 (95% CI: 1.01-1.47), Z = -1.62, P < 0.05]., Conclusions: U-shaped associations were observed between ozone and ischemic stroke morbidity in T2D patients. Aim: Psychological distress commonly occurs in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). The primary objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of depression in PsA. The secondary objective was to explore its associated factors, including socio-demographics, disease activity data and comorbidities., Methods: Patients with PsA fulfilling the Classification Criteria for Psoriatic Arthritis were consecutively recruited from local rheumatology clinics. Depression was assessed by a self-administered Chinese-Cantonese version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)., Results: Two hundred and eight eligible patients with PsA were recruited, with 82 females and 126 males. Depression was found in 62 (29.8%) of them. The univariate model identified these associated factors: (1) Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score; (2) disease activity measurement, that is tender and swollen joint count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, Disease Activity in Psoriatic Arthritis (DAPSA) score, Leeds Enthesitis Index and tender dactylitis count; (3) quality of life measurement, that is Health Assessment Questionnaire - Disability Index (HAQ-DI), pain and general health perception; (4) PsA duration; and (5) body mass index. The final regression model identified DAPSA and HAQ-DI were closely associated with depression, P = .007 and P = .02 respectively. Moderate and strong correlations with HADS score were found with DAPSA (Kendall's tau-b coefficient [τb] = 0.25) and HAQ-DI (τb = 0.4) respectively. No associations with depression were found between age, living and employment status, gender, demographics, inflammatory markers, disease duration, skin involvement and comorbidities, in term of Charlson's Comorbidity Index., Conclusion: Depression was prevalent among PsA patients and it was closely correlated with disease activity and physical function impairment. Achieving low disease activity and maintaining physical function in patients with PsA may mitigate the psychological burden. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in a group (n = 371) of fertile age women with endometriosis, by administering a structured questionnaire, in order to evaluate the incidence of gynecological and systemic comorbidities and the impact on quality of life (QoL) in two different groups of Italian and Chinese patients affected by endometriosis. Chinese (n = 175) and Italian (n = 196) women were compared regarding systemic (inflammatory, autoimmune, and mental) and gynecological comorbidities, pain symptoms, and QoL, by using the Short Form 12 (SF-12). Italian patients resulted younger at the diagnosis and suffered more frequently from severe pain than Chinese ones. Deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) and mixed phenotypes were more frequent in Italian patients, whereas ovarian (OMA) and superficial endometriosis (SUP) were more common in the Chinese. The Italian group showed more systemic comorbidities, and those disorder were already present before the diagnosis of endometriosis. Furthermore, the Italian group showed lower SF-12 physical and mental scores, suggesting a worse health-related QoL in Italian endometriotic patients. A number of differences has been observed between Italian and Chinese women with endometriosis in terms of comorbidities and QoL, which may be related to the ethnicity, the different health system organization and the social and cultural background., (© 2021. Background: The health effect of particulate matter pollution on stroke has been widely examined; however, the effect among patients with comorbid type 2 diabetes (T2D) in developing countries has remained largely unknown., Methods: A time-series study was conducted to investigate the short-term effect of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and inhalable particulate matter (PM 10 ) on hospital admissions for stroke among patients with T2D in Beijing, China, from 2014 to 2018. An over-dispersed Poisson generalized additive model was employed to adjust for important covariates, such as weather conditions and long-term and seasonal trends., Results: A total of 159,298 hospital admissions for stroke comorbid with T2D were reported. Approximately linear exposure-response curves were observed for PM 2.5 and PM 10 in relation to stroke admissions among T2D patients. A 10 μg/m 3 increase in the four-day moving average of PM 2.5 and PM 10 was associated with 0.14% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.05-0.23%) and 0.14% (95% CI: 0.06-0.22%) incremental increases in stroke admissions among T2D patients, respectively. A 10 μg/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 in the two-day moving average corresponded to a 0.72% (95% CI: 0.02-1.42%) incremental increase in hemorrhagic stroke, and a 10 μg/m 3 increase in PM 10 in the four-day moving average corresponded to a 0.14% (95% CI: 0.06-0.22%) incremental increase in ischemic stroke., Conclusions: High particulate matter might be a risk factor for stroke among patients with T2D. PM 2.5 and PM 10 have a linear exposure-response relationship with stroke among T2D patients. Pneumoconiosis is one of the most serious and common occupational disease in China at present, there are a variety of complications, which seriously affect the disease treatment, disease progress and prognosis, but also the direct cause of death. Therefore, the prevention and treatment of various comorbidities of pneumoconiosis is a major public health problem in our country. This article outlines the epidemiological characteristics of different comorbidities of pneumoconiosis, analyze and summarize its research status and existing problems, and put forward relevant thoughts, in order to provide reference for the prevention and treatment of pneumoconiosis comorbidities.

Background and Purpose: No studies have reported the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic on patients with preexisting stroke. We aim to study the clinical course of COVID-19 patients with preexisting stroke and to investigate death-related risk factors., Methods: We consecutively included 651 adult inpatients with COVID-19 from the Central Hospital of Wuhan between January 2 and February 15, 2020. Data on the demography, comorbidities, clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, treatments, complications, and outcomes (ie, discharged or death) of the participants were extracted from electronic medical records and compared between patients with and without preexisting stroke. The association between risk factors and mortality was estimated using a Cox proportional hazards regression model for stroke patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2., Results: Of the 651 patients with COVID-19, 49 with preexisting stroke tended to be elderly, male, had more underlying comorbidities and greater severity of illness, prolonged length of hospital stay, and greater hospitalization expenses than those without preexisting stroke. Cox regression analysis indicated that the patients with stroke had a higher risk of developing critical pneumonia (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.01 [95% CI, 1.27-3.16]) and subsequent mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.73 [95% CI, 1.00-2.98]) than the patients without stroke. Among the 49 stroke patients, older age and higher score of Glasgow Coma Scale or Sequential Organ Failure Assessment were independent risk factors associated with in-hospital mortality., Conclusions: Preexisting stroke patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 were readily predisposed to death, providing an important message to individuals and health care workers that preventive measures must be implemented to protect and reduce transmission in stroke patients in this COVID-19 crisis.

Background: The purpose of this study is to assess the basic nutritional status (body metabolic index, BMI) and its risk factors in the patients suffering from chronic obstructive emphysema., Methods: We described their demographic characteristics and comorbidity distribution of 2812 obstructive emphysema participants. Comparative analyzes were conducted on BMI with different demographic characteristics and comorbidities status, and comprehensive analysis on risk factors of excess weight and underweight in patients with different characters., Results: The prevalence of underweight and excess weight was 17.57% and 31.54% respectively. There were differences in the distribution of three types of body mass index among patients with different demographic characteristics and different comorbidities. The study found that age of 50 ~ 64 (odds ratio, OR: 2.99), tuberculosis (OR: 2.41), and low TG (OR: 2.32) were the risk factors about underweight. Low HDL-C (OR: 4.15), nonalcoholic fatter liver (NAFLD) (OR: 3.96), and age of 50 ~ 64 (OR: 2.72) were closely related to the excess weight of participants., Conclusions: This study highlighted the prevalence of underweight and excess weight in patients among emphysema. Comorbidities were important risk factors of underweight or excess weight among chronic emphysema patients. These findings were important for the prevention and treatment of chronic obstructive emphysema in the future.

The mortality rate of elderly patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) was significantly higher than the overall mortality rate. However, besides age, leading death risk factors for the high mortality in elderly patients remain unidentified. This retrospective study included 210 elderly COVID-19 patients (aged ≥ 65 years), of whom 175 patients were discharged and 35 died. All deceased patients had at least one comorbidity. A significantly higher proportion of patients in the deceased group had cardiovascular diseases (49% vs. 20%), respiratory diseases (51% vs. 11%), chronic kidney disease (29% vs. 5%) and cerebrovascular disease (20% vs. 3%) than that in the discharged group. The median levels of C-reactive protein (125.8mg/L vs. 9.3mg/L) and blood urea nitrogen (7.2mmol/L vs. 4.4mmol/L) were significantly higher and median lymphocyte counts (0.7×10 9 /L vs. 1.1×10 9 /L) significantly lower in the deceased group than those in the discharged group. The survival curve analysis showed that higher C-reactive protein (≥5mg/L) plus any other abnormalities of lymphocyte, blood urea nitrogen or lactate dehydrogenase significantly predicted poor prognosis of COVID-19 infected elderly patients. This study revealed that the risk factors for the death in these elderly patients included comorbidities, increased levels of C-reactive protein and blood urea nitrogen, and lymphopenia during hospitalization.

Background and Aims: COVID-19 is already a pandemic. Emerging data suggest an increased association and a heightened mortality in patients of COVID-19 with comorbidities. We aimed to evaluate the outcome in hypertensive patients with COVID-19 and its relation to the use of renin-angiotensin system blockers (RASB)., Methods: We have systematically searched the medical database up to March 27, 2020 and retrieved all the published articles in English language related to our topic using MeSH key words., Results: From the pooled data of all ten available Chinese studies (n = 2209) that have reported the characteristics of comorbidities in patients with COVID-19, hypertension was present in nearly 21%, followed by diabetes in nearly 11%, and established cardiovascular disease (CVD) in approximately 7% of patients. Although the emerging data hints to an increase in mortality in COVID-19 patients with known hypertension, diabetes and CVD, it should be noted that it was not adjusted for multiple confounding factors. Harm or benefit in COVID-19 patients receiving RASB has not been typically assessed in these studies yet, although mechanistically and plausibly both, benefit and harm is possible with these agents, given that COVID-19 expresses to tissues through the receptor of angiotensin converting enzyme-2., Conclusion: Special attention is definitely required in patients with COVID-19 with associated comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes and established CVD. Objective: To reveal the risk factors, the symptom distribution characteristics, the clinical values of white blood cell counts (WBC counts), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) in hospitalized patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) combined with depression and/or anxiety., Methods: The study included prospective cross-sectional and case-control studies, and was executed in the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University, Guizhou, China. Previously diagnosed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients who admitted to the hospital with AECOPD, patients with depression and/or anxiety, and healthy people were enrolled in the study. The Hamilton Rating Scales were used to assess all subjects, and the complete blood counts (CBC) were collected. Baseline data and clinical measurement data [spirometry, arterial blood gas analysis, and COPD evaluation test (the CAT scale)] from patients with AECOPD were collected., Results: Of the 307 patients with AECOPD included, 63.5% (N=195) had depressive and/or anxiety symptoms, and 36.5% (N=112) had no symptoms. Sex, respiratory failure, number of comorbidities, number of acute exacerbations in the previous year and the CAT score were closely related to AECOPD combined with depression and/or anxiety (p<0.05). The CAT scale score were the independent risk factor (OR=6.576, 95% CI 3.812-11.342) and significant predictor of AECOPD with depression and/or anxiety (AUC=0.790,95% CI 0.740-0.834); the patients with depression and/or anxiety were more severe and characteristic than the patients with AECOPD combined with depression and/or anxiety; RDW was associated with AECOPD with depression and/or anxiety (p=0.020, OR1.212,95% CI1.03-1.426), and had certain clinical diagnostic value (AUC=0.570,95% CI 0.531-0.626)., Conclusion: Depression and anxiety should not be ignored in patients with AECOPD. The severity and quality of life of COPD were closely related to the occurrence of depression and/or anxiety symptoms. In most cases, perhaps depression and anxiety in AECOPD are only symptoms and not to the extents of the diseases. RDW had clinical diagnostic value in AECOPD combined with depression and/or anxiety. Background: Although research on the effects of comorbidities on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients is increasing, the risk of cancer history has not been evaluated for the mortality of patients with COVID-19., Methods: In this retrospective study, we included 3232 patients with pathogen-confirmed COVID-19 who were hospitalized between January 18th and March 27th, 2020, at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, China. Propensity score matching was used to minimize selection bias., Results: In total, 2665 patients with complete clinical outcomes were analyzed. The impacts of age, sex, and comorbidities were evaluated separately using binary logistic regression analysis. The results showed that age, sex, and cancer history are independent risk factors for mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. COVID-19 patients with cancer exhibited a significant increase in mortality rate (29.4% vs. 10.2%, P < 0.0001). Furthermore, the clinical outcomes of patients with hematological malignancies were worse, with a mortality rate twice that of patients with solid tumors (50% vs. 26.1%). Importantly, cancer patients with complications had a significantly higher risk of poor outcomes. One hundred nine cancer patients were matched to noncancer controls in a 1:3 ratio by propensity score matching. After propensity score matching, the cancer patients still had a higher risk of mortality than the matched noncancer patients (odds ratio (OR) 2.98, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.76-5.06). Additionally, elevations in ferritin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, procalcitonin, prothrombin time, interleukin-2 (IL-2) receptor, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were observed in cancer patients., Conclusions: We evaluated prognostic factors with epidemiological analysis and highlighted a higher risk of mortality for cancer patients with COVID-19. Importantly, cancer history was the only independent risk factor for COVID-19 among common comorbidities, while other comorbidities may act through other factors. Moreover, several laboratory parameters were significantly different between cancer patients and matched noncancer patients, which may indicate specific immune and inflammatory reactions in COVID-19 patients with cancer.

Background: Since being first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 8, 2019, the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, now known as COVID-19, has spread globally. Some case studies regarding the characteristics and outcome of patients with COVID-19 have been published recently. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the risk factors of COVID-19., Methods: Medline, SinoMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for clinical and epidemiological studies on confirmed cases of COVID-19., Results: The incidence of fever, cough, fatigue, and dyspnea symptoms were 85.6 % (95CI 81.3-89.9 %), 65.7 % (95CI 60.1-71.4 %), 42.4 % (95CI 32.2-52.6 %) and 21.4 % (95CI 15.3-27.5 %). The prevalence of diabetes was 7.7 % (95CI 6.1-9.3 %), hypertension was 15.6 % (95CI 12.6-18.6 %), cardiovascular disease was 4.7 % (95CI 3.1-6.2 %), and malignancy was 1.2 % (95CI 0.5-1.8 %). The complications, including ARDS risk, ranged from 5.6-13.2 %, with the pooled estimate of ARDS risk at 9.4 %, ACI at 5.8 % (95CI 0.7-10.8 %), AKI at 2.1 % (95CI 0.6-3.7 %), and shock at 4.7 % (95CI 0.9-8.6 %). The risks of severity and mortality ranged from 12.6 to 23.5% and from 2.0 to 4.4 %, with pooled estimates at 18.0 and 3.2 %, respectively. The percentage of critical cases in diabetes and hypertension was 44.5 % (95CI 27.0-61.9 %) and 41.7 % (95CI 26.4-56.9 %), respectively., Conclusion: Fever is the most common symptom in patients with COVID-19. The most prevalent comorbidities are hypertension and diabetes which are associated with the severity of COVID-19. ARDS and ACI may be the main obstacles for patients to treatment recovery. Introduction: Prior epidemiology studies on erectile dysfunction (ED) have varied in geography/place, time period, and methodology. Due to this variability, comparisons of data across studies are greatly limited. Additionally, little is known about the rates of comorbid ED and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)., Aim: To update the prevalence of ED and patient characteristics using a single methodology in 8 countries: Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States., Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included men (≥18 years) who self-reported experiencing difficulty in achieving or maintaing an erection in the past 6 months in the 2015 and 2016 National Health and Wellness Surveys (N = 97,159). Pairwise comparisons between the United States and each of the other countries were performed among respondents with ED and no BPH, aged ≥18 years, and within the subset of men aged 40-70 years., Main Outcome Measures: ED prevalence (with BPH, with no BPH, and overall), health characteristics, and ED risk factors were assessed., Results: ED with BPH was found to be < 6.0% in all countries. ED prevalence overall varied from 37.2% (Brazil) to 48.6% (Italy). Similar patterns were observed for the subset of men aged 40-70 years. Patients in Brazil were younger (aged ≥18: 43.85 vs. 52.35; aged 40-70: 52.94 vs. 56.76 years; for both, P < .05) than those in the United States. ED-related comorbidities were more common in European countries, comparatively., Conclusion: This study provides an important update and outlook to ED epidemiology in Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Introduction: It has become increasingly evident that the male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) may not only be caused by abnormalities in one or more components of the lower urinary tract, but also be secondary to a range of systemic disorders. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the features of urological and systemic disorders among middle-aged and elderly male LUTS patients in China. The second aim is to investigate the changes of both conditions after interventions through a 2-year prospective follow-up., Methods and Analysis: This nationwide, hospital-based, multicentre cohort study was designed and initiated by the Prostatic Obstruction Investigation Team which is an international multidisciplinary academic group focusing on the management of male LUTS. An expectation of 11 500 eligible subjects from 23 authorised urological centres across the mainland of China will be recruited with a baseline assessment and data collection. Subsequently, subjects will undergo a follow-up for 24 months having been prescribed with oral medications or after being selected for prostate surgery based on the standard practice of each institution as well as the clinician's own experience. Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine whether there was gender difference in clinical manifestations and comorbidities in the patients with Spondyloarthritis (SpA) in China. Methods: 346 patients fulfilling ASAS criteria for SpA were recruited from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, including 280 males and 66 females. A comparison was conducted in terms of age at onset, disease course, family history, HLA-B27 positivity, clinical manifestations, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP), the bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index (BASDAI) and AS disease activity score (ASDAS), and comorbidities between male and female patients. Results: Compared with female patients, male patients were younger at disease onset (22±7 vs 27±9, P< 0.001),had higher rates of morning stiffness (74.3%), and higher scores of CRP and ASDAS-CRP ( P< 0.010, P= 0.014). However, no significant gender difference was observed in other clinical parameters like clinical manifestations, family history, HLA-B27 positivity, BASDAI, and BASFI and treatment. Male SpA patients had a higher prevalence of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (26.2%) than that of female patients (8.3%), and a higher prevalence of osteoporosis (30.5% vs 14.3%, P< 0.01), especially with a lower lumbar T score. Logistic regression analysis reviewed that limited weight ( OR= 0.94, P< 0.001), high ASDAS-CRP ( OR= 1.58, P= 0.006) and male ( OR= 8.02, P= 0.004) are more inclined to have osteoporosis. Conclusion: Compared with female patients, male patients were younger at disease onset and higher scores of CRP and ASDAS-CRP. No significant gender difference was observed in clinical manifestations, family history, HLA-B27 positivity, BASDAI, and BASFI and treatment. Male SpA patients had a higher prevalence of HBV infection and osteoporosis than female patients. Comorbidities should be paid more attention in the patients with SpA.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the mortality risks of hospitalized patients with epilepsy (PWE)., Methods: Our data source was extracted from discharge abstracts in a hospital medical database. Various clinical variables, including demographical characteristics, natural features of epilepsy, and comprehensive set of comorbidities, were screened to investigate the risk. Comorbidities were defined using a validated ICD-10-based classification. The distributions of comorbid conditions and demographics were presented. In-hospital mortality rates of groups with epilepsy and without epilepsy were compared. Logistic regression was applied to explore the important predictors of in-hospital mortality., Results: A cohort of 11,422 PWE (male: 58.5%, mean age: 40.2 years) was recruited for the study. The most common comorbidities were cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, and peripheral vascular disease, which accounted for 23.5%, 18.8%, and 8.0% of the study cohort, respectively. In-hospital mortality rates were 2.9% and 1.1% in the epilepsy and nonepilepsy cohort, respectively. Male patients exhibited an increased risk of death (odds ratio (OR) = 1.2; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.0-1.6). Patients aged over 65 years were more likely to die than those below 18 years (OR = 18.2; 95% CI = 8.8-31.0). Patients with comorbidities, including central nervous system (CNS) infections, renal disease, traumatic brain and head injuries, anoxic brain injury, metastatic cancer, pulmonary circulation disorders, encephalopathy, solid tumor without metastasis, cardiac arrhythmias, and diabetes without complication, had a higher risk of in-hospital death than patients without comorbidities (OR = 6.1, 5.2, 5.1, 4.4, 3.7, 2.5, 2.4, 2.0, 1.5, 1.4, respectively; 95% CI = 4.1-9.1, 3.8-7.0, 2.8-9.5, 2.4-8.3, 2.2-6.3, 1.5-4.3, 1.4-4.2, 1.1-3.7, 1.1-2.1, 1.0-1.9, respectively)., Conclusion: The in-hospital mortality of PWE increased remarkably with age, and this parameter was predominant in male patients. Alcohol is deleterious to physical and mental health as well as social well-being. This study aims to examine the prevalence of alcohol consumption and factors associated with its use among school-going Malaysian adolescents. The Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) 2012 employed 2-stage clustering design to Malaysian secondary school respondents aged 12 to 17 years. The prevalence of current alcohol usage was 8.9% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 7.8-10.07) overall, 11.2% (95% CI: 9.80-12.80) among males, and 23.4 (95% CI: 21.40-25.50) among Chinese students. Multivariate logistic regression showed that adolescents who had used alcohol were more likely to have used substance (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.39; 95% CI: 2.33-4.99), experienced injury (aOR = 1.53; 95% CI: 1.20-1.95), and engaged in sexual behaviors (aOR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.12-1.79), and fights (aOR = 1.23; 95% CI: 1.08-1.41).
