Purpose: To assess the effectiveness of four in-office therapies used for the treatment of dentin hypersensitiviy (DH) after one single application.Materials and Methods: A randomised, controlled, split-mouth clinical trial was designed to evaluate the following treatments: 5% sodium fluoride varnish (positive control); 3% potassium oxalate; two-step self-etching adhesive; high power diode laser. Nineteen patients were selected and one tooth per quadrant was included in the study. After evaporative stimulation, pain was quantified by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) at baseline, immediately after treatment, and after 15, 30 and 60 days.Results: Compared to the baseline values, fluoride varnish (p = 0.00) and potassium oxalate (p = 0.00) presented an immediate desensitising effect that remained constant at 15, 30 and 60 days. The high-power diode laser presented significant reduction in VAS scores after 15 days (p = 0.00), while in the self-etching adhesive group, a significant reduction in VAS scores was observed only after 60 days (p = 0.03). The change in VAS ([VAS x days] - VAS baseline) differed among the groups immediately after treatment, being higher in the fluoride varnish and lower in the adhesive groups, but no statistically significant difference was found at time intervals of 15, 30 and 60 days.Conclusion: When an immediate desensitising effect is desired after one single application, fluoride varnish and potassium oxalate should be used. High-power diode laser and self-etching adhesive may not be clinically considered an appropriate desensitising therapy after one single application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Background: Studies of dentifrices containing strontium chloride or potassium nitrate have documented the clinical efficacy of these formulations for dentin hypersensitivity (DH), but few studies have evaluated dentifrices containing both active ingredients. Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the effects on DH of a dentifrice containing 2% strontium chloride and 5% potassium nitrate in a silica base (experimental dentifrice) with those of a dentifrice containing the same silica base without any active ingredient (control dentifrice). Methods: Male and female patients aged 20 to 65 years with DH were eligible to participate in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in China. Patients were assigned to receive the experimental or control dentifrice. At baseline, immediately after topical dentifrice use, and after 3 days, patients received an oral examination of their hard and soft tissues, followed by an evaluation of DH that used the Yeaple Probe to measure tactile hypersensitivity and the Schiff Cold Air Scale to measure the perception of pain from an air blast stimulus. Adverse events (in particular, discomfort while brushing or alteration in taste) in the oral hard or soft tissues were monitored throughout the study. Results: A total of 81 patients were enrolled (40 in the experimental group; 41 in the control group), of whom 79 (55 women; 24 men) completed the study. After topical use, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean (SD) tactile hypersensitivity score (19.47 [14.69] vs 14.27 [5.76]; P = 0.047) and a significantly lower mean air blast hypersensitivity score (1.93 [0.51] vs 2.22 [0.60]; P = 0.026) than did the control group. After 3 days, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean tactile hypersensitivity score (19.87 [14.95] vs 14.51 [6.00]; P = 0.045) and a significantly lower air blast hypersensitivity score (1.80 [0.56] and 2.13 [0.60]; P = 0.014) than the control group. After topical use and after 3 days, the experimental group had increases from baseline in tactile scores of 54.04% and 56.67%, respectively (both, P = 0.001) and reductions from baseline in air blast scores of 18.51% and 24.21% (both, P < 0.001); the control group had increases in tactile scores of 21.14% and 21.54% (P = 0.022 and P = 0.007) and reductions in air blast scores of 10.24% and 13.41% (P = 0.001 and P < 0.001). No adverse events were reported throughout the study. Conclusion: In these patients with DH in China, the dentifrice containing 2% strontium chloride and 5% potassium nitrate was efficacious in reducing DH when used instantly after topical dentifrice use and after 3 days of use. Background: Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) could occur or intensify after non-surgical periodontal therapy because of the exposure of dentine tubules, but currently no gold standard exists to treat DH. It has been demonstrated that nano-sized particles presented potential for dentine tubules blocking and remineralization. This randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the efficacy of dentifrice containing nano-carbonate apatite (n-CAP) in reducing dentine hypersensitivity (DH) after non-surgical periodontal therapy., Methods: 48 periodontitis patients with DH were included in this clinical trial. After non-surgical periodontal therapy, patients included were randomized to test and control group and the respective dentifrices were applied at chairside, after which they were instructed to brush teeth with the allocated dentifrices twice a day at home. Periodontal parameters were recorded at baseline and the last follow-up. DH was measured by air-blast test and recorded by visual analogue scale (VAS) and Schiff sensitivity scale at baseline, after polishing (0 week) and 2/4/6 weeks., Results: 45 participants completed the follow-up. Periodontal parameters were improved and comparable between groups. Significant reduction in DH was observed in both groups at all time-points compared to baseline in terms of VAS and Schiff score. The test group achieved significantly greater relief from hypersensitivity compared with the control group after 4-week at-home use (for change of VAS, test group: 2.27 ± 2.47 versus control group: 1.68 ± 2.24, p = 0.036; for change of Schiff, test group: 0.94 ± 0.92 versus control group: 0.61 ± 0.83, p < 0.001). The 6-week results showed borderline significance between groups in terms of change of Schiff (p = 0.027) and no significance in terms of change of VAS (p = 0.256)., Conclusions: Home-use of n-CAP based dentifrice had some benefit on alleviation of DH following non-surgical periodontal therapy after 4 weeks compared to the control product., Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trials Registry (No. ChiCTR-IPR-17011678, http://www.chictr.org.cn/, registered 16 June, 2017).
