The activity and fate of heavy metals (HMs) from mining and smelting activities in farmland soil is of great significance to effectively prevent the excessive enrichment of HMs in crops. This study focuses on Baiyin area, a typical mining city in northwest China. In this example, the sources, speciation, and fate of HMs in the farmland soil, and the migration and enrichment characteristics of HMs in the different parts of crops planted in different areas were studied in detail combining the chemical sequential extraction and Pb isotope approaches. Results showed that the mean anthropogenic contributions of HMs in farmland soils were approximately 85%, 88%, 76%, and 41% for the ore district (OD), Xidagou sewage irrigation area (XSIA), Dongdagou sewage irrigation area, and the Yellow River irrigation area, respectively, and the risk that HMs were excessively accumulated in crops in OD and XSIA was high. Compared with soil residual fractions, the isotope ratios 206Pb/207Pb in non-residual fractions (1.1304–1.1669) were closer to the values of local ores, suggesting that anthropogenic HMs from mining and smelting activities were mainly enriched in the non-residual fractions. The isotope ratios 206Pb/207Pb in crops (1.1398–1.1686) further confirmed that those anthropogenic HMs were more easily absorbed and concentrated by crops. HMs contents in leaves from OD and XSIA were generally higher than that in roots, suggesting that atmospheric deposition in OD and XSIA had a greater impact on the HMs concentration of crop leaves，while the excess rate of HMs in grain/fruit was the lowest in all parts of crops. The division and classification of crop planting in mining area can effectively help minimize the risk that HMs from anthropogenic source enter the human body through the food chain. Proactive career exploration lays a vital foundation for individuals' development. Taking a human initiative perspective, we focused on the influence of proactive personality on career exploration behavior. Specifically, drawing on self-expansion theory, we anticipated that a more proactive personality would pertain to higher career self-efficacy, which would further promote career exploration behavior. In addition, individuals often seek self-expansion through support obtained from close relationships; thus, we proposed that the above link would be stronger when parental career support was high. Results from a time-lagged survey study with 595 university students from China supported our hypotheses. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate power load forecasting has a significant effect on a smart grid by ensuring effective supply and dispatching of power. However, electric load data generally possesses the characteristics of nonlinearity, periodicity, and seasonality. For complex electric load systems, the presence of redundant information potentially reduces the real pattern extraction for load forecasting. Bearing in mind these issues, we propose an effective forecasting model in which a feature extraction module is introduced that is combined with the variational mode decomposition (VMD) with the variational autoencoder (VAE). In this combination, VMD is utilized for decomposing complex load series and VAE is used to filter the redundant information (noises) from each decomposed series. With two real data sets from China, we demonstrate that the proposed model can achieve highly accurate predictions, as we find the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) values for one-step-ahead prediction to be 1% (Nanjing) and 0.8% (Taixing), respectively. • A dimensionality reduction approach is proposed. • A novel combination method is designed for load forecasting. • The proposed approach can improve the accuracy in actual projects. Background: Long-term exposure to particulate air pollutants can lead to an increase in mortality of hemodialysis patients, but evidence of mortality risk with short-term exposure to ambient particulate matter is lacking. This study aimed to estimate the association of short-term exposure to ambient particulate matter across a wide range of concentrations with hemodialysis patients mortality., Methods: We performed a time-stratified case-crossover study to estimate the association between short-term exposures to PM 2.5 and PM 10 and mortality of hemodialysis patients. The study included 18,114 hemodialysis death case from 279 hospitals in 41 cities since 2013. Daily particulate matter exposures were calculated by the inverse distance-weighted model based on each case's dialysis center address. Conditional logistic regression were implemented to quantify exposure-response associations. The sensitivity analysis mainly explored the lag effect of particulate matter., Results: During the study period, there were 18,114 case days and 61,726 control days. Of all case and control days, average PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels were 43.98 μg/m 3 and 70.86 μg/m 3 , respectively. Each short-term increase of 10 μg/m 3 in PM 2.5 and PM 10 were statistically significantly associated with a relative increase of 1.07 % (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.99 % - 1.15 %) and 0.89 % (95 % CI: 0.84 % - 0.94 %) in daily mortality rate of hemodialysis patients, respectively. There was no evidence of a threshold in the exposure-response relationship. The mean of daily exposure on the same day of death and one-day prior (Lag 01 Day) was the most plausible exposure time window., Conclusions: This study confirms that short-term exposure to particulate matter leads to increased mortality in hemodialysis patients. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread rapidly worldwide since it was confirmed as the causative agent of COVID-19. Molecular diagnosis of the disease is typically performed via nucleic acid-based detection of the virus from swabs, sputum or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). However, the positive rate from the commonly used specimens (swabs or sputum) was less than 75%. Immunological assays for SARS-CoV-2 are needed to accurately diagnose COVID-19. Sera were collected from patients or healthy people in a local hospital in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, China. The SARS-CoV-2 specific IgM antibodies were then detected using a SARS-CoV-2 IgM colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (GICA). Results were analysed in combination with sera collection date and clinical information. The GICA was found to be positive with the detected 82.2% (37/45) of RT-qPCR confirmed COVID-19 cases, as well as 32.0% (8/25) of clinically confirmed, RT-qPCR negative patients (4-14 days after symptom onset). Investigation of IgM-negative, RT-qPCR-positive COVID-19 patients showed that half of them developed severe disease. The GICA was found to be a useful test to complement existing PCR-based assays for confirmation of COVID-19, and a delayed specific IgM antibody response was observed among COVID-19 patients with severe progression.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) which has been threatening global public health for many years. High genetic diversity is dominant feature of Mtb. Increasing cases of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a serious public health problem to TB control in China. Spontaneous mutations in the Mtb genome can alter proteins which are the target of drugs, making the bacteria drug resistant. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the genotype of Mtb isolates from some areas in Yunnan, China and explore the association between genotypes and MDR-TB. Using spoligotyping, we identified Beijing genotypes, six non-Beijing genotypes and a number of orphan genotypes from 270 Mtb isolates from patients in Yunnan Province during 2014-2016. Of 270 Mtb isolates, 102 clinical Mtb strains were identified as drug-resistant (DR) by drug susceptibility testing (DST), among them, 52 MDR strains. Beijing genotypes occupied the highest MDR proportion (78.85%) followed by the orphan genotypes (15.38%). The characteristics of MDR strains showed high genetic diversity. The results will help to efficiently improve diagnosis and treatment and provide valuable information for Mtb molecular epidemiology., (© 2019 The Author(s).)

Background: The postremission therapies for adult patients generally contain consolidation chemotherapy, allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT). Because of the various results from different centers, the optimal therapy for adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients is still uncertain. This study aimed to better understand predictive factors and role of auto-HSCT in the postremission therapy for adult ALL patients., Methods: The outcomes of 135 adult patients with ALL, who received the first auto-HSCT in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Center of Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from January 1, 1994 to February 28, 2014, were retrospectively analyzed. Survival curves were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and simultaneous effects of multiple covariates were estimated with the Cox model., Results: Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) at 5 years for the whole cohort were 59.1 ± 4.5% and 59.0 ± 4.4%, respectively. The cumulative nonrelapse mortality and relapse rate at 5 years were 4.5 ± 0.03% and 36.6 ± 0.19%. For both OS and DFS, acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia, high lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) at diagnosis, blast cell proportion ≥5% on the 15 th day of induction therapy, and extramedullary infiltration before HSCT were the poor prognosis factors. In addition, age ≥35 years predicted poor DFS. Only T-ALL and high LDH were the independent undesirable factors associated with OS and DFS in Cox regression model. For 44 patients who had results of pretransplantation minimal residual disease (MRD), positive MRD (MRD ≥0.01%) indicated poor OS (P = 0.044) and DFS (P = 0.008). Furthermore, for the standard risk group, the patients with negative MRD (MRD <0.01%) had better results (OS at 18 months was 90.0 ± 9.5%, while for the patients with positive MRD OS was 50.0 ± 35.4%, P = 0.003; DFS at 18 months was 90.0 ± 9.5%, while for the positive MRD group DFS was 0%, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: This study confirmed that auto-HSCT combined with posttransplantation maintenance chemotherapy could be an option for adult ALL patients and pretransplantation MRD may play a significant role in the direction of therapy for adult ALL patients.

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ribosomal protein SA (RPSA) gene with colorectal cancer (CRC). A case-control study including 388 controls and 387 patients with CRC was conducted in a Chinese population. Information about socio-demography and living behavior factors was collected by a structured questionnaire. Three SNPs (rs2133579, rs2269349, rs7641291) in RPSA gene were genotyped by Illumina SnapShot method. Multiple logistic regression models were used for assessing the joint effects between tea consumption and SNPs on CRC. The subjects with rs2269349 CC genotype had a decreased risk for CRC (OR=0.60; 95%CI = 0.37-0.99), compared with TT/CT genotype after adjustment for covariates. A similar association of rs2269349 with rectal cancer was observed (OR=0.49; 95%CI=0.24-1.00). Further analyses indicated that this SNP could modify the protective effect of tea drinking on CRC. Among the subjects with rs2269349 TT/CT or rs2133579 AA/GA, there was a marginal significantly lower risk of CRC (OR and 95%CI: 0.63 and 0.39-1.01 for rs2269349; 0.64 and 0.40-1.02 for rs2133579) in tea-drinking subjects in comparison to non-tea-drinking subjects. Mutants in the RPSA gene might be associated with genetic susceptibility to CRC and influence the protective effect of tea consumption in the Chinese population.

The selection and breeding of pollution-safe cultivars (PSCs) is a practicable and cost-effective approach to minimize the influx of heavy metal to the human food chain. In this study, both pot-culture and field experiments were conducted to identify and screen out cadmium pollution-safe cultivars (Cd-PSCs) from 50 pakchoi (Brassica rapa L. ssp. chinensis) cultivars for food safety. When treated with 1.0 or 2.5 mg/kg Cd, most of the pakchoi cultivars (>70%) showed greater or similar shoot biomass when compared with the control. This result indicates that pakchoi has a considerable tolerance to soil Cd stress. Cd concentrations in the shoot varied significantly (P<0.05) between cultivars: in two Cd treatments (1.0 and 2.5 mg/kg), the average values were 0.074 and 0.175 mg/kg fresh weight (FW), respectively. Cd concentrations in the shoots of 14 pakchoi cultivars were lower than 0.05 mg/kg FW. In pot-culture experiments, both enrichment factors (EFs) and translocation factors (TFs) of six pakchoi cultivars were lower than 1.0. The field studies further confirmed that the Hangzhouyoudonger, Aijiaoheiye 333, and Zaoshenghuajing cultivars are Cd-PSCs, and are therefore suitable for growth in low Cd-contaminated soils (≤1.2 mg/kg) without any risk to food safety.
