Background: Canine enteric coronavirus (CECoV) is a prevalent infectious disease among dogs worldwide, yet its epidemiology in mainland China remains poorly understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the prevalence of CECoV in mainland China and identify factors influencing its prevalence. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases for studies regarding CECoV epidemiology of China. PubMed, CNKI, Wanfang, and CQVIP were searched to obtain the studies. Eligible studies were selected based on predefined criteria, and data were extracted and synthesized. The quality the studies was assessed using the JBI assessment tool. Heterogeneity was checked using I2 test statistics followed by subgroup and sensitivity analysis. Subgroup analyses were performed to explore variations in CECoV prevalence by factors such as year, region, season, health status, social housing type, gender, age, and breed. Publication bias was assessed using a funnel plot and eggers test that was followed by trim and fill analysis. Results: A total of 27 studies involving 21,034 samples were included in the meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of CECoV in mainland China was estimated to be 0.30 (95% CI 0.24–0.37), indicating persistent circulation of the virus. Subgroup analyses revealed higher prevalence rates in younger dogs, multi-dog households, apparently healthy dogs, and certain regions such as southwest China. Seasonal variations were observed, with lower prevalence rates in summer. However, no significant differences in prevalence were found by gender. Conclusions: This study provides valuable insights into the epidemiology of CECoV in mainland China, highlighting the persistent circulation of the virus and identifying factors associated with higher prevalence rates. Continuous monitoring and surveillance efforts, along with research into accurate detection methods and preventive measures, are essential for the effective control of CECoV and mitigation of its potential impact on animal and human health. Many domestic animals have a profound impact on endangered species through complex interactions and spillover effects in and between coupled human and natural systems. A thorough understanding of the driving forces of human decisions regarding how domestic animals are kept is therefore critical to promote the synergy of human livelihood and biodiversity conservation. Working in the Qinling Mountains of China, we conducted a multidisciplinary study using a structural equation model (SEM) to link households' demographic and economic conditions, peoples attitudes and activities with their decisions, and further investigated how such process influences the potential negative impact of free‐ranging dogs on wildlife. Among 139 blood and saliva samples collected from dogs that were owned by local villagers but allowed to roam freely, 33.3% were positive for at least one of three viral infections, including canine distemper (28.2%), canine parvovirus (25.6%), and rabies virus prevalence (10.3%). SEM modeling revealed that human activity (β = 0.27, p =.012) has significantly increased dogs' potential negative impacts on wildlife by increasing the number of dogs and their direct contact with wildlife, as well as their larger movement range. Conversely, improvement in demographic and economic conditions (β = −0.22, p =.011) and human attitudes (β = −0.51, p =.013) suppresses the influence of free roaming dogs on wildlife. Meanwhile, livelihoods dependent on natural resources increased the likelihood of owners having dog practice that may negatively impact wildlife (β = 0.54, p <.001), without improving the economic conditions of the residents (β = −0.26, p <.001). Based on the above results, we recommend a program that combines educational and conservation efforts to encourages local residents in more responsible dog ownership and recommend reserve managers provide financial incentives to mitigate human‐wildlife conflicts. Objective: To understand the epidemiological distribution characteristics of mountain-type zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (MT-ZVL) in Yangquan City, Shanxi Province, China, from 2006 to 2021, to explore the influencing factors leading to the re-emergence of the epidemic, and to provide a basis for the formulation of targeted control strategies. Methods: Case information spanning from 2006 to 2021 in Yangquan City was collected for a retrospective case-control study conducted from June to September 2022. A 1:3 matched ratio was employed. A questionnaire was utilized to gather data on basic information, demographic characteristics, awareness of MT-ZVL knowledge, residence, and dog breeding and living habits. The study employed a multifactorial conditional stepwise logistic regression model to analyze the influencing factors. Results: A total of 508 subjects was analyzed. Risk factors for MT-ZVL included the use of soil/stone/concrete as building materials (OR = 3.932), presence of nearby empty/stone stack houses (OR = 2.515), dog breeding (OR = 4.215), presence of stray dogs (OR = 2.767), and neighbor's dog breeding (OR = 1.953). Protective factors comprised knowledge of MT-ZVL (OR = 0.113) and using mosquito repellents (OR = 0.388). The findings indicate significant associations between environmental and behavioral factors and MT-ZVL incidence in Yangquan City, Shanxi Province, China, from 2006 to 2021. These results underscore the importance of public awareness campaigns and targeted interventions aimed at reducing exposure to risk factors and promoting protective measures to mitigate the re-emergence of MT-ZVL outbreaks. Conclusion: House building materials, presence of neighboring empty houses, breeding domestic dogs and distribution of stray dogs surrounding the home are risk factors for MT-ZVL. Objective: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) represents a profoundly perilous zoonotic disease. The advent of viral macrogenomics has facilitated the exploration of hitherto uncharted viral territories. In the scope of this investigation, our objective is to scrutinize disparities in the intestinal microbiotic ecosystems of canines dwelling in elevated terrains and those afflicted by Echinococcus infection, employing the tool of viral macrogenomics. Methods: In this study, we collected a comprehensive total of 1,970 fecal samples from plateau dogs infected with Echinococcus, as well as healthy control plateau dogs from the Yushu and Guoluo regions in the highland terrain of China. These samples were subjected to viral macrogenomic analysis to investigate the viral community inhabiting the canine gastrointestinal tract. Results: Our meticulous analysis led to the identification of 136 viral genomic sequences, encompassing eight distinct viral families. Conclusion: The outcomes of this study hold the potential to enhance our comprehension of the intricate interplay between hosts, parasites, and viral communities within the highland canine gut ecosystem. Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb) is recognized as a leading cause of respiratory diseases in dogs and cats. However, epidemiological data on Bb in dogs and cats in China are still limited, and there is no commercially available vaccine. Live vaccines containing Bb that are widely used abroad are generally effective but can establish latency and potentially reactivate to cause illness in some immunodeficient vaccinated recipients, raising safety concerns. In this study, 34 canine-derived and two feline-derived Bb strains were isolated from 1809 canine and 113 feline nasopharyngeal swab samples collected from eight provinces in China from 2021 to 2023. The PCR results showed that the percentage of positive Bb was 22.94% (441/1922), and more than 90% of the Bb isolates had four virulence factor-encoding genes (VFGs), namely, fhaB, prn, betA and dnt. All the isolated strains displayed a multidrug-resistant phenotype. The virulence of 10 Bb strains isolated from dogs with respiratory symptoms was tested in mice, and we found that eight isolates were highly virulent. Furthermore, the eight Bb isolates with high virulence were inactivated and intramuscularly injected into mice, and three Bb strains (WH1218, WH1203 and WH1224) with the best protective efficacy were selected. Dogs immunized with these three strains exhibited strong protection against challenge with the Bb field strain WH1218. Ultimately, the WH1218 strain with the greatest protection in dogs was selected as the vaccine candidate. Dogs and cats that received a vaccine containing 109 CFU of the inactivated WH1218 strain showed complete protection against challenge with the Bb field strain WH1218. This study revealed that Bb is an important pathogen that causes respiratory diseases in domestic dogs and cats in China, and all the isolates exhibited multidrug resistance. The present work contributes to the current understanding of the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, and virulence genes of Bb in domestic dogs and cats. Background: Dogs and cats are the hosts of many vector-borne human pathogens that can be transmitted to humans. Given their direct and intimate contact with humans, companion dogs and cats are considered direct sentinels of vector-borne human pathogens. However, limited information is currently available regarding canine and feline zoonotic pathogens in China. This study detected canine and feline vector-borne human pathogens to better understand the potential risk to humans. Methods: Blood samples were collected from 275 domestic companion animals (117 dogs and 158 cats) living in Tianjin city, China, and the presence of DNA from Anaplasma, Babesia, Bartonella, and Rickettsia was detected by seminested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR products of the expected size were sequenced, and these newly generated sequences were subjected to BLASTN, nucleotide identity, and phylogenetic analyses. Results: A total of 24 blood samples tested positive for vector-borne pathogens in companion dogs and cats in Tianjin city, China, with a relatively low positive rate of 8.7%. Specifically, seven human pathogens, including Rickettsia raoultii, Candidatus Rickettsia jingxinensis, Rickettsia sibirica, Rickettsia felis, Babesia venatorum, Bartonella tribocorum, and Bartonella Henselae, were identified. In addition, Anaplasma ovis with zoonotic potential and Candidatus A. cinensis were detected. Conclusion: Our results indicate substantial genetic diversity in the vector-borne human pathogens circulating in companion dogs and cats. Ehrlichia canis, a prominent tick-borne pathogen causing canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME), is one of the six recognized Ehrlichia species worldwide. Despite its widespread presence in ticks and host dogs in China, comprehensive genomic information about this pathogen remains limited. This study focuses on an in-depth analysis of E. canis YZ-1, isolated and cultured from an infected dog in China. The complete genome of E. canis YZ-1 was sequenced (1,314,789 bp, 1022 genes, 29% GC content, and 73% coding bases), systematically characterizing its genomic elements and functions. Comparative analysis with representative genomes of Ehrlichia species, including E. canis strain Jake, E. chaffeensis, Ehrlichia spp., E. muris, E. ruminantium, and E. minasensis, revealed conserved genes, indicating potential evolutionary connections with E. ruminantium. The observed reduction in virulence-associated genes, coupled with a type IV secretion system (T4SS), suggests an intricate balance between pathogenicity and host adaptation. The close relationship with E. canis Jake and E. chaffeensis, alongside nuanced genomic variations with E. ruminantium and E. mineirensis, underscores the need to explore emerging strains and advancements in sequencing technologies continuously. This genetic insight opens avenues for innovative medications, studies on probiotic resistance, development of new detection markers, and progress in vaccine development for ehrlichiosis. Further investigations into the functional significance of identified genes and their role in host–pathogen interactions will contribute to a more holistic comprehension of Ehrlichia's biology and its implications for pathogenicity and transmission. Canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2) is a highly contagious virus in dogs that typically causes hemorrhagic enteritis and a high mortality rate in unvaccinated puppies. The genetic variability and antigenic diversity of CPV-2 hinder its effective prevention of infection by vaccination. To investigate the epidemiology and genetic characteristics of CPV-2 in China, rectal swabs from affected dogs were collected from different animal clinics in Kunshan from 2022 to 2023. Preliminary detection and capsid gene sequencing of CPV-2 were performed using previously described primers and protocols. The overall detection rate for CPV-2 was 16.5% (33/200). A significant association was found between the CPV-2-positivity and clinical signs, age, breed and vaccination status. Sequence analysis revealed the presence of CPV-2c genotypes in all positive samples, which were genetically similar to other Asian CPV-2c strains. Notably, four key mutations (A5G, F267Y, Y324I and Q370R) were detected in all isolates, and one novel mutation (I447M) was detected in three CPV-2 isolates. These mutations in the CPV-2 strains could impact vaccine efficacy and the effectiveness of the virus immune evasion. Surprisingly, no recombination events were observed between the identified CPV-2c strains and reference strains from China. Our data revealed that amino acid residues 324, 426 and 440 of VP2 may under strong selection pressure. This pattern of genetic variation in the CPV-2 lineage warrants continuous laboratory-based surveillance programs in other parts of China to better understand the pattern of seasonal distribution and association between emerging genotypes and the intensity of disease severity. Neospora caninum is an important obligate intracellular apicomplexan parasite that causes spontaneous abortions in cattle and leads to huge economic losses to the farming industry. Although a high prevalence of N. caninum infection has been reported in Asia, data on the prevalence of water buffaloes in China remain unclear. To understand the seroprevalence of N. caninum infection in water buffaloes and its definitive host dogs in China, a total of 987 water buffalo sera from Guangxi Province were tested using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We obtained an overall seroprevalence of 50.9% (502/987) for water buffalo samples. And the positive rate was higher in border cities (56.8%, 425/748) than in central cities (32.3%, 77/239). We further tested 240 serum samples from dogs in Guangxi and found an overall prevalence of 57.9% (139/240). The high prevalence of N. caninum infection in both dogs and water buffaloes was first reported in southern China, and these data will surely contribute to the prevention and control of the disease. Babesiosis is a significant tick-borne disease, which is globally prevalent. Many previous research studies have discussed the presence of Babesia gibsoni, Babesia vogeli, and Babesia canis in dogs in China. In the present study, we have used distinct molecular approaches to detect the presence of Babesia spp. in dogs of Hainan Province/Island, China. A total of 1106 dog blood samples were collected from the Island, of which 61 dog samples were found to be positive for Babesia vogeli. The highest infection rate was 56.7% (17/30) detected from Tunchang, followed by 25.0% (3/12) from Baisha and 10.4% (5/48) from Wenchang. There was only one positive case of Babesia gibsoni, and the infection rate was found to be 0.1% (1/1106). The sequencing results showed that the subjected sample sequences were identical and resembled the Babesia vogeli and Babesia gibsoni sequences available in the database. The results derived from this study will be helpful for planning effective strategies for the treatment, control, and prevention of babesiosis in dogs of Hainan Province/Island. The management of international students has become a new challenge that China and most countries in the world must face in the context of the "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI) and the globalization of higher education. In this paper, we conducted an empirical study on international students in China (ISC) based on a combination of spatial econometric models and analytical methods such as BCG, GeoDetector, and DDCAM, trying to provide a basis for "evidence-based decision-making" by the government in the management of international students and talents. Quantitative analyses revealed significant diversity and spatial effects in the spatio-temporal dynamics of ISCs, with the emergence of star, gazelle, cow, and dog types, suggesting that the scientific management of ISCs requires both local adaptation (spatial differentiation and heterogeneity) and regional collaboration (spatial correlation and autocorrelation). There were many factors affecting the spatio-temporal dynamics of ISCs, and the force of different factors varied considerably, with the key factor more than 0.5 but the auxiliary factor being less than 0.2. Moreover, the factors had significant interaction effects, and a large number of super-interacting factor pairs emerged, with a joint force of more than 0.9, twice the force of a single factor. Generally, the factors had a complex driving mechanism, suggesting that ISC management requires identifying the key and important factors, while attaching emphasis to the synergistic effects among different factors. The recommendation is that China should manage ISCs in spatial zones and introduce differentiated development strategies and policies in different zones. In conclusion, this paper proposes a technical route integrating "dynamic analysis-driving mechanism-policy design" for international students, which is applicable to China, while providing a reference for the management and spatial planning design of international students in other countries in the world. Tibetan pastoralists have long been using dogs as guards. Since the late 1980s, the same dogs, called "Tibetan Mastiffs," have become valuable pets for Han Chinese consumers. This paper discusses how commodification transforms the value of these dogs, and the care relationship between humans and dogs. Tibetan pastoralists and dogs participate in a reciprocal yet distanced care relationship through raising and guarding, which is not confined to a pursuit of dogs' ferocity. In contrast, a taste for ferocity prevails in the Tibetan Mastiff market, and breeders care for dogs in a more dedicated, and yet more unilateral and dangerous, way. The unintended consequence of breeders' care is that they raise dogs that sometimes bite; this is explained based on a process of value transformation in dogs' guarding abilities, from ethical virtue to commercial price. Simple Summary: Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) can affect the health of domestic and wild animals, and their prevalence is increasing worldwide. As potential reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, dogs might transfer these pathogens to humans. There is limited knowledge about the vector-borne pathogens circulating in dogs in China. To investigate the current epidemiological status and genetic characteristics of Ehrlichia spp., Hepatozoon spp., and Mycoplasma spp., blood samples were collected from healthy pet dogs in four regions of China. There was no evidence of Ehrlichia spp. or Mycoplasma spp., and only Hepatozoon canis was detected in these dogs. High haplotype diversity and the occurrence of genetic variation were observed among these H. canis isolates. These results will be useful for developing effective control approaches against CVBDs in companion animals. Canine vector-borne diseases are widely distributed around the world. They are transmitted by arthropods, and many seriously threaten the health of animals and humans. In China, our knowledge of Ehrlichia, Hepatozoon, and Mycoplasma species circulating in dogs is still poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand the prevalence and genetic characteristics of canine Ehrlichia spp., Hepatozoon spp., and Mycoplasma spp. in Chongqing (southwest), Fujian (southeast), Shandong (southeast), and Hubei (central) Provinces of China. Blood samples from healthy pet dogs were processed to detect Ehrlichia, Hepatozoon, and Mycoplasma DNA with PCR. Haplotype and phylogenetic analyses were performed on 18S rRNA sequences. Among 306 dogs, no Ehrlichia spp. or Mycoplasma spp. were detected, whereas one Hepatozoon sp. was detected in 10 (3.27%) of the animals. Only Hepatozoon canis was identified and was endemic to Chongqing (2.46%) and Hubei (8.77%). A haplotype analysis identified eight haplotypes among the H. canis isolates. A phylogenetic analysis showed that the H. canis isolates in this study clustered into four clades, together with isolates from different countries and hosts, forming a large group that was clearly separate from other Hepatozoon species. These findings provided new information on the epidemiological characteristics of canine vector-borne diseases in China and will be helpful in the development of efficient measures to safeguard the health and well-being of companion animals and their owners. Simple Summary: A discrete choice experiment was designed to explore dog-keeping households' preferences for dog rabies vaccination services. Dog-keeping households can be classified into three types based on the latent class model: resolute executors, mischievous rebels, and incentivized compliers. The residence, children in the household, perception of the safety risks, and knowledge of rabies may contribute to the heterogeneity among the households. Supportive measures should be provided to improve the convenience of dog rabies vaccination services in emerging countries like China. Vaccination for dogs is essential for controlling rabies and achieving the goal of eliminating dog-mediated rabies globally by 2030. This paper aims to investigate the preferences for public services regarding rabies vaccination, in an effort to optimize the existing rabies vaccination and prevention programs in China. The households investigated had significant preferences for dog rabies vaccination service attributes. The households can be classified into three types: resolute executors (52.13%), mischievous rebels (5.85%), and incentivized compliers (42.02%). The residence, the presence of children in the household, perception of the safety risks, and knowledge of rabies may be sources of heterogeneity. Supportive services on dog rabies vaccination should be made available, such as arranging weekend vaccination services, building mobile vaccination stations, providing home vaccination services, and increasing vaccine supply through multiple channels. Furthermore, multiple measures can be taken to increase rabies vaccination awareness among family members and facilitate dog management innovation to further increase the level of rabies prevention and control. Cachavirus (CachaV) infection was first reported in the USA in 2019. This virus has been previously detected in pet dogs and cats in China. In the present study, we retrospectively examined this virus in 413 dogs and 127 cats. Swab samples obtained from these animals were collected during 2015–2017. Notably, CachaV was detected in four samples from dogs with diarrhea but not in cats; however, the correlation between healthy dogs and those with enteritis was not statistically significant. Furthermore, we amplified early complete genomic sequences of the four strains detected in our study dogs (CHN1601, CHN1602, CHN1703, and CHN1704). Among these strains, the sequence identity of the NS1 protein and the seven previously reported strains in China were 97.44%–99.7%, whereas that of VP1 protein was 98.02%–99.6%. Interestingly, in the NS1 coding region, CHN1704 demonstrated 99.7% (highest) similarity with the CachaV strain NWT-W88 detected from a wolf and 64.5% similarity with the NS1 of a bat parvovirus (BtPV) strain. Conversely, in the VP1 coding region, CHN1703 demonstrated 99.7% (highest) similarity with the prototype CachaV strain IDEXX1 detected from dogs and 63.3% similarity with BtPV strain. For the phylogenetic analysis of NS1 and VP1, the four strains detected during 2016-2017 were merged with other Chinese and foreign CachaV strains to form the major branch. A new type of parvovirus known as feline chaphamaparvovirus (FeChPV) was discovered in the feces of shelter cats in Canada in 2019, and >50% of cats were reported to be infected with this virus. In this study, two FeChPV-positive samples were identified from the rectal swabs of 285 dogs with diarrhea but none in 50 healthy dogs. Whole genome sequences of these two FeChPV strains (OQ162042 and OQ162043) were amplified and compared with those of the two viruses originally discovered in Canada (IDEXX-1 and VRI849). The whole genome, NS1, and VP1 of the two FeChPV strains shared a high identity of 95.0%–97.8% nucleotide, 96.9%–98.6% amino acid (aa), and 97.2%–98.8% aa with the reported FeChPV strains, respectively. The phylogenetic tree of NS1 and VP1 revealed that two FeChPV strains, namely, CHN20201025 and CHN20201226, were closely clustered with the two FeChPV prototypes detected in Canada in a group. Moreover, CHN20201025 and CHN20201226 were obviously different from Carnivore chaphamaparvovirus 1 and were classified as Carnivore chaphamaparvovirus 2. This is the first study to report the identification of FeChPV in fecal samples from dogs in China, and the genetic analysis of the FeChPV, which was previously detected in Canadian cats, would improve our understanding of its host spectrum. Canine diarrhea is a common intestinal illness that is usually caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites, and canine diarrhea may induce morbidity and mortality of domestic dogs if treated improperly. Recently, viral metagenomics was applied to investigate the signatures of the enteric virome in mammals. In this research, the characteristics of the gut virome in healthy dogs and dogs with diarrhea were analyzed and compared using viral metagenomics. The alpha diversity analysis indicated that the richness and diversity of the gut virome in the dogs with diarrhea were much higher than the healthy dogs, while the beta diversity analysis revealed that the gut virome of the two groups was quite different. At the family level, the predominant viruses in the canine gut virome were certified to be Microviridae, Parvoviridae, Siphoviridae, Inoviridae, Podoviridae, Myoviridae, and others. At the genus level, the predominant viruses in the canine gut virome were certified to be Protoparvovirus, Inovirus, Chlamydiamicrovirus, Lambdavirus, Dependoparvovirus, Lightbulbvirus, Kostyavirus, Punavirus, Lederbergvirus, Fibrovirus, Peduovirus, and others. However, the viral communities between the two groups differed significantly. The unique viral taxa identified in the healthy dogs group were Chlamydiamicrovirus and Lightbulbvirus, while the unique viral taxa identified in the dogs with diarrhea group were Inovirus, Protoparvovirus, Lambdavirus, Dependoparvovirus, Kostyavirus, Punavirus, and other viruses. Phylogenetic analysis based on the near-complete genome sequences showed that the CPV strains collected in this study together with other CPV Chinese isolates clustered into a separate branch, while the identified CAV-2 strain D5-8081 and AAV-5 strain AAV-D5 were both the first near-complete genome sequences in China. Moreover, the predicted bacterial hosts of phages were certified to be Campylobacter, Escherichia, Salmonella, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Moraxella, Mediterraneibacter, and other commensal microbiota. In conclusion, the enteric virome of the healthy dogs group and the dogs with diarrhea group was investigated and compared using viral metagenomics, and the viral communities might influence canine health and disease by interacting with the commensal gut microbiome. Kidney stones resulting from ingestion of melamine-tainted food products were originally detected in dogs and cats in 2004 and 2007. Nephroliths were removed at necropsy from dogs that had died from acute kidney injury in Asia in 2004. Samples of these were submitted to our laboratories for analysis. The presence of a mixed s-triazine matrix comprising melamine, cyanuric acid, and ammelide, but no detectable ammeline was found in the canine stone samples we analyzed. The unusual and unique green coloration of these stones was attributed to the presence of biliverdin. The techniques developed in the canine study were applied to the analysis of human kidney stones. In 2008, high levels of melamine were detected in some infant formula and other liquid and powdered milk products originating from China. Human kidney stones, resulting from this type of contamination, were obtained from children, and analyzed using mass spectral techniques. The results indicated the presence of melamine, ammeline, uric acid, but no ammelide. No green color was observed, thereby eliminating biliverdin. Canine parvovirus (CPV) is an important pathogen of dogs and wild carnivores. It is a single-stranded DNA virus with a high mutation frequency and antigenic drift. To research the prevalence and genetic variation of CPV in Shandong, 62 samples from diseased dogs were collected and examined by using PCR for parvovirus. Our results showed that the positivity was 62.9% (n = 39), VP2 gene were sequenced and compared with reference strains. For the parvovirus subtype prevalence, 7 strains were CPV-2a (17.9%) and 32 strains were CPV-2c (82.1%). The results of phylogenetic analysis of VP2 gene of the CPVs showed all 39 isolates formed a major clade and were distantly related to the commercial vaccine strains. By comparing amino acid (aa) sequences, this study discovered new mutations not previously reported which may be related to host range and antigenicity. Moreover, one CPV-2c strain (QN-55) was isolated and cultured on F81 cells, and characterized by whole-genome sequencing. Background: Microsporum canis, a dermatophyte commonly associated with pets, is a leading cause of severe tinea capitis. The increasing prevalence of antifungal resistance among dermatophytes poses a significant global health challenge., Objectives: This study aims to define the updated antifungal susceptibility profile of M. canis to enhance treatment strategies for dermatophyte infections., Methods: This study analysed 348 M. canis isolates from mainland China for their susceptibility to 11 antifungal agents, following the CLSI M38-A3 guidelines. Additionally, we investigated the susceptibility of M. canis to antifungal agents and analysed the correlation between in vitro drug susceptibility and clinical outcomes in 54 cases of tinea capitis., Results: The majority of strains showed low MICs to all 11 drugs. We described the upper limits of wild-type (WT) minimal inhibitory concentrations (UL-WT) for 10 of these agents; however, no clear resistance patterns were identified through MIC distribution analysis. Notably, fluconazole had the highest MICs among the tested classes, while the novel agent olorofim showed superior activity. Resistance was detected in two strains to griseofulvin (MIC 64 μg/mL), one to fluconazole (MIC 64 μg/mL) and two to terbinafine (MIC 16 μg/mL). Although azoles and terbinafine remain effective against M. canis. Clinical outcomes indicate that terbinafine may be less effective in treating M. canis infections., Conclusion: Establishing a clinical breakpoint for M. canis is urgently needed to improve treatment protocols. The feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is a highly contagious virus that affects cats worldwide, characterized by leukopenia, high temperature and diarrhea. Recently, the continuous prevalence and variation of FPV have attracted widespread concern. The aim of this study was to investigate the isolation, genetic evolution, molecular characterization and epidemiological analysis of FPV strains among cats and dogs in China from 2019 to 2024. The 41 FPV strains, including 38 feline strains and 3 canine strains, were isolated from rectal swab samples by inoculating monolayer FK81 cells and performing a plaque purification assay. The viral and hemagglutination titers of these 41 FPV strains were 10 4.33 ~10 6.33 TCID 50 /0.1 mL and 7.0 log 2 ~9.7 log 2 , respectively. Based on the complete VP2 gene, the nucleotide homology of these FPV strains was 98.91~100%, and the homology with 24 reference FPV strains from different countries and hosts was 98.85~100%. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that 41 FPV strains were more closely related to the FPV strains of Asian origin (Asian FPV strain group) than those of European and American origin (European and American FPV strain group). Furthermore, 12 mutation sites of the VP2 protein were found in these FPV strains, of which 91 and 232 amino acid sites were previously reported. Moreover, the 91 amino acid site was found to be a positive selection site with the highest dN/dS value in the selection pressure analysis. Importantly, 35 FPV strains with 91S substitution in the VP2 protein (FPV-VP2-91S strains) had formed obvious evolutionary branches in the Asian FPV strain group. The analysis of all available VP2 protein sequences of Chinese FPV strains in the GenBank database showed that the occurrence rate of FPV-VP2-91S strains had been increasing from 15.63% to 100% during 2017~2024, indicating that the FPV-VP2-91S substitution in the VP2 protein was a noteworthy molecular characteristic of the dominant FPV strains in China. These results contribute to a better understanding of their genetic evolution and renew the knowledge of FPV molecular epidemiology.

Canine circovirus (CCV) has been detected globally, but its genotyping remains unevenly characterized. To comprehend the evolution and genotyping of CCV, 887 rectal swabs of dogs were collected during 2018-2023. According to p-distance/frequency histograms and phylogenetic trees based on complete genome sequences, the 21 newly obtained Chinese and 84 reference CCV strains were mainly divided into 7 subtypes (CCV-1a, CCV-1b, CCV-1c, CCV-1d, CCV-1e, CCV-2a, and CCV-2b). Among the 21 newly obtained CCVs, 9 strains belonged to CCV-1d, 2 strains belonged to CCV-1b, and the remaining strains belonged to CCV-1c. Recombination analysis indicated that recombination events occurred between CCV strains of different subtypes, hosts, and countries. The CCV capsid protein features 19 variable sites, with 2 sites (T58Q, P239A) displaying regional specificity and 3 (Q57T, E150Q, and T195Q) manifesting subtype specificity. During the active surveillance, we isolated nine H4N6 subtype influenza A viruses from wild birds in China. To reveal the epidemiology and biology characteristics of H4 subtype influenza A virus from wild birds, we investigated H4 subtype viruses available in the public source, and found that the H4 viruses have been detected in at least 37 countries to date, and more than 73.6% of the viruses were from wild Anseriformes. Bayesian phylogeographic analysis showed that Mongolia worked as the important transmission centre for Eurasian lineage H4 viruses spreading. Phylogenetic analysis of HA genes indicated that global H4 influenza A viruses were divided into Eurasian and North American lineage, our nine H4N6 isolates fell into the Eurasian lineage. Recombination analysis suggested that nine H4N6 isolates underwent complex gene recombination with various subtypes of influenza A viruses and formed two genotypes. Notably, nine H4N6 isolates acquired mammalian virulence-increasing residues. Two representative H4N6 viruses possessed dual receptor binding specificity, they could efficiently replicate in MDCK and 293 T cells in vitro infection, also could cross the species barrier to infect mice directly without prior adaption in vivo experiments. These findings emphasize the public health issues represented by H4 viruses, and highlight the need to strengthen the active surveillance of H4 viruses from wild birds.

Seasonal influenza A virus subtype H3N2 (A/H3N2) circulates globally and has been linked to higher hospitalization rates and summer outbreaks in temperate regions. Here, A/H3N2 circulation in Shanghai, China was systematically studied using data and materials generated by the Shanghai influenza surveillance network from 2005 to 2023. Time-series analysis of incidence and subtyping data showed that A/H3N2 co-circulated with other (sub)types and dominated in multiple seasonal influenza peaks, preferentially in summer. Whole genomes of 528 representative strains were sequenced, and spatiotemporal phylodynamic analysis using these and GISAID-archived sequences demonstrated that in the years before the COVID-19 pandemic, phylogenetically similar strains were circulating locally and elsewhere. However, clade 1a.1 (within 3C.2a.1b.2a), circulated in and only in Shanghai and domestically in 2022, while the sibling clade 2 predominated in other regions. Interestingly, clade 1a.1 was swiftly and completely replaced by clade 2, mostly 2a.3a.1, at the start of 2023. In hemagglutination inhibition and neutralization assays, sera from healthy donors collected in 2022 displayed higher or similar reactivity against 2a.3a.1 compared to 1a.1. By contrast, transcription and replication competence of 2a.3a.1 in MDCK cells was higher than 1a.1. These results indicated that instead of antigenicity differences enabling evasion of pre-existing immunity, higher replicative capability more likely contributed to 2a.3a.1 viruses achieving dominance in China. In addition to summarizing patterns of A/H3N2 local circulation in Shanghai, this work revealed an unusual episode in A/H3N2 global circulation and evolution dynamics in connection to the COVID-19 pandemic and explored possible mechanistic explanations.

Background: In addition to Mycoplasma haemocanis and Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum, a few hemoplasma species that mainly infect other livestock have been detected in dogs. 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos' (Ca. M. haemobos) has been found in a variety of animals in China. The present study was aimed to investigate the occurrence of 'Ca. M. haemobos' infections in dogs and ticks collected from the Henan province, China. Results: Overall, 55 dog blood samples and 378 ticks on skins were collected from anemic and healthy dogs, and these samples were subjected to PCR, sequence analysis, and identification. The results showed that Haemaphysalis longicornis (266) and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (112) were the only two parasitic ticks on dogs. Molecular detection revealed that 163 M. haemocanis, 88 'Ca. M. haemobos' and 32 Anaplasma platys positive amplicons could be amplified from dogs, H. longicornis and R. (B.) microplus. In addition, co-infections (M. haemocanis + A. platys and 'Ca. M. haemobos'+ A. platys) could be also detected. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first molecular evidence of 'Ca. Simple Summary: Tick-borne diseases in companion animals have been increasing globally. Domestic dogs and cats as potential reservoir hosts of tick-borne pathogens might transfer zoonotic diseases to humans. There are currently few reports of feline babesiosis in China. To investigate the incidence of Babesia spp. infection in cats, blood samples were collected from Chongqing, Fujian, Hubei and Shandong, and the first case in China of Babesia gibsoni in cats was detected. These findings will be useful for understanding the epidemic situation of babesiosis in China and provide a theoretical basis for undertaking effective disease control measures in the interests of public health. As there are few studies of Babesia spp. infection in cats in China, or anywhere in the world, the aim of this study was to explore the epidemic features of babesiosis in pet cats in China. In total, 429 blood samples were randomly collected in four different geographical regions. The 18S rRNA gene fragment of Babesia spp. was amplified by nest polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and haplotype and phylogenetic analysis of Babesia were performed to analyze the relationship of this protozoa. The total positive rate of infection was 2.8%. BLAST analysis indicated that Babesia gibsoni was detected in 12 cats. Among these, 4.3%, 3.1%, 0.8% and 2.0% were from Chongqing, Fujian, Hubei and Shandong, respectively. Haplotype and phylogenetic analysis showed that there were nine haplotypes and no obvious genetic variation among B. gibsoni populations. This is the first report of B. gibsoni in cats in China. These findings will be helpful for understanding the epidemiology of Babesia spp. in China, and provide a foundation for developing effective preventative strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dogs are popular companions in our daily lives for company, hunting, protection or shepherding, but they also serve as reservoirs for zoonotic parasites. We analysed faecal samples from urban and rural environments in Qinghai Province on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites. A total of 682 faecal samples were collected from four urban and two rural environments from October 2019 to December 2020. The samples were analysed for common intestinal parasites using a species-specific PCR approach. The total number of samples with parasites was 40 (5.87%): 23 (3.37%) were positive for helminths, and 17 (2.49%) were positive for protozoa. The following parasites were identified, and their respective prevalence rates were calculated: Cryptosporidium canis (1.32%), Giardia duodenalis (1.17%, assemblages D (n = 6) and C (n = 2)), Taenia hydatigena (1.03%), Taenia multiceps (0.59%), Toxocara canis (0.59%), Echinococcus shiquicus (0.29%), Dipylidium caninum (0.29%), Taenia pisiformis (0.15%), Mesocestoides lineatus (0.15%), Trichuris vulpis (0.15%), and Ancylostoma spp. (0.15%). The overall prevalence was significantly higher in dog faecal samples from rural environments than in those from urban environments (16.19% vs. 3.99%). E. shiquicus, T. pisiformis, M. lineatus, T. vulpis, and Ancylostoma spp. were only found in dog faecal samples from rural environments. The results of the present study indicate that intestinal parasite-positive dogs are important sources of environmental contamination, suggesting a significant zoonotic infection risk in humans and other animals. (1) Background: there has been a growing concern about pet-spread bacterial zoonosis in recent years. This study aimed to investigate the trend in drug-resistance of canine Escherichia coli isolates in northeast China between 2012–2021 and the differences in drug-resistance of E. coli of different origins in 2021. (2) Methods: E. coli were isolated from feces or anal swab samples from dogs and cats, and their antibiotic susceptibility profiles and phylogenetic grouping were identified. PCR was applied on the extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) E. coli for antibiotic resistance genes. (3) Results: five hundred and fifty-four E. coli isolates were detected in 869 samples (63.75%). The multidrug resistance (MDR) rates of E. coli in pet dogs showed a decreasing trend, but working dogs showed the opposite trend. Resistance genes blaCTX-M and blaCTX-M+TEM were dominant among the ESBL producers (n = 219). The consistency between the resistance phenotypes and genes was high except for fluoroquinolone-resistant ESBL E. coli. All ESBL E. coli-carrying blaNDM were isolated from working dogs, and one of the strains carried mcr-1 and blaNDM-4. Phylogroup B2 was the dominant group in pet cats, and more than half of the isolates from companion cats were ESBL E. coli. (4) Conclusions: the measures taken to reduce resistance in China were beginning to bear fruit. Companion cats may be more susceptible to colonization by ESBL E. coli. Simple Summary: It becomes critical to understand the effects that the current pandemic can have on the welfare of household dogs and cats, in order to develop programs that can support the owners in the care of their companion animals during such a critical time. The current survey showed that the constant presence of the owners at home during the lockdown favored the decrease in most of the behavioral problems considered. For example, during the lockdown period, dogs were more willing to play inside the house, while cats were more social and had a better appetite. In addition, litter box management for cats was improved during the lockdown, which might explain the decrease in the frequency of inappropriate elimination. Only anxiety-related behaviors in dogs increased during the lockdown, and these were associated with a reduction in play activity and altered sleeping patterns. On the other hand, most of the behavioral issues considered in the study were more frequent during the pre-lockdown period, which might have been associated with the long hours that pets spent alone at home, with reduced possibilities of interaction with their owners. Therefore, it is critical to develop support programs for pet owners, for both emergency situations such as lockdowns and normal times, to allow the establishment and maintenance of a healthy human–pet relationship and good pet welfare. Considering the effects that the COVID-19 pandemic had and still has on human psychological health, it is expected that it might also affect household dogs' and cats' welfare. The current study explores the behavioral changes in dogs and cats before (BL) and during the lockdown (DL), as reported by their owners in China. Besides demographic parameters, variables related to the daily management of dogs and cats were analyzed in relation to behavioral problems, stress-related behaviors, and anxiety-related behaviors before and during the lockdown. A total of 261 questionnaires were collected. In general, behavioral problems and stress-related behaviors in dogs (p < 0.001) and cats (p < 0.001) decreased DL compared to BL, while anxiety-related behaviors in cats did not show any differences between the two periods considered. On the other hand, anxiety-related behaviors were more frequent in dogs DL (36.3%) compared to BL (35%), which were associated with reduced frequency of play activities with the owners (p = 0.016) and altered sleeping habits (p < 0.01). During the lockdown, dogs' and cats' daily routines and management (feeding and sleeping habits, dogs' walks, dogs' and cats' play activities, litter box management, and cats' lifestyle) experienced changes, but they were not associated with any behavioral issues. On the other hand, the behavioral issues considered for dogs and cats were more frequent BL, which were influenced by the daily management of the pets. The current study showed how critical the attention the owners can provide to the pets could be, to improve their companion animals' welfare. Therefore, it is important to provide pet owners with behavioral management support both during particularly difficult periods such as a lockdown and during regular daily routines. Canine parvovirus 2 (CPV2) causes one of the most serious canine viral infections, with high mortality in young dogs. In 2014, 2019, and 2021, we determined genetic sequences of CPV2 strains obtained from 39 fecal samples collected from the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in the Jilin Province of China. Sequence alignments were performed using the major capsid protein (VP2) gene; protein sequences of these samples had high nucleotide (>97.4%) and amino acid (>95.6%) identity. All of the amino acid sequences contained Ser297Ala and Tyr324Ile mutations. Our survey indicated a high prevalence of CPV2 variants in Yanbian Prefecture, with the new CPV2a variant (26 of 39; 67%) being the most frequent. CPV2c, identified in 9 of 39 (23%) samples, had not been detected in this region previously, indicating the potential risk of CPV2 mutation. Purpose: Canine hookworm disease is a global zoonotic parasitic disease caused by a variety of nematodes in families Ancylostomatidae, including Ancylostoma spp., Necator spp., and Uncinaria spp., in the small intestine (mainly the duodenum) of dogs. The disease is widely distributed in China. The purpose of this study is to systematically diagnose and treat canine hookworm disease through the case of miniaturization Schnauzer dog feed infected with A. ceylanicum, so as to provide experimental basis for subsequent prevention and control of canine hookworm disease. Methods: In the current study, we isolated hookworm eggs from a diseased miniature schnauzer, then the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 gene sequence from genomic DNA extracted from hookworms. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 gene sequence sequences was inferred using MEGA-X. After phylogenetic analysis, etiologic and symptomatic therapies were used to treat the canine hookworm disease. Results: The sequencing results showed that the length of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 gene sequence was approximately 960 bp, and ITS1 and ITS2 were extracted to analyze similarity with other hookworms to build a phylogenetic tree. After phylogenetic analysis, the results showed that the diseased miniature schnauzer was infected by A. ceylanicum. Using etiologic and symptomatic therapies, the sick dog with an A. ceylanicum infection was also treated for 5 days. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first report of diagnosis and treatment for canine hookworm disease in Guangzhou city. In addition, with the improvement of economic level, the scale of pet dog breeding is also increasing. Background: In China the highest prevalence of echinococcosis is in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). The government has issued documents and implemented comprehensive prevention and control measures focusing on controlling the source of infection of echinococcosis. It was very important to understand the implementation and effect of infectious source control measures. The purpose of this study was to examine the implementation of measures to control infectious source (domestic and stray dogs) in TAR and to assess their effectiveness. Methods: We collected data on domestic dog registration and deworming and stray dog sheltering in 74 counties/districts in the TAR from 2017 to 2019. Fecal samples from domestic dogs were collected from randomly selected towns to determine Echinococcus infection in dogs using coproantigen ELISA. We analyzed the data to compare the canine rate of infection between 2016 and 2019. The data analysis was performed by SPSS statistical to compare dog infection rate in 2016 and 2019 by chi-square test, and ArcGIS was used for mapping. Results: From 2017 to 2019, 84 stray dog shelters were built in TAR, and accumulatively 446,660 stray or infected dogs were arrested, sheltered, or disposed of. The number of domestic dogs went downward, with an increased registration management rate of 78.4% (2017), 88.8% (2018), and 99.0% (2019). Dogs were dewormed 5 times in 2017, 12 times in 2018, and 12 times in 2019. The dog infection rate was 1.7% (252/14,584) in 2019, significantly lower than 7.3% (552/7564) from the survey of echinococcosis prevalence in Tibet in 2016 (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Between 2017 and 2019, the number of stray dogs and infection rate of Echinococcus spp. in domestic dogs decreased significantly, indicating that dogs were effectively controlled as a source of infection in TAR and reflecting a significant decrease in the risk of echinococcosis transmission. Background: Toxoplasma gondii can infect almost all warm-blooded animals, including humans and dogs. Humans can become infected with T. gondii by petting dogs that have eaten or contacted infected cat feces. The aim of this study was to evaluate T. gondii infections in dogs from central China. From 2015 to 2021, a total of 536 dog samples (195 fecal, 81 hearts, and 260 serum samples) from Henan Province were collected. Heart juice or serum samples (n = 341) were tested for T. gondii antibodies using the modified agglutination test (MAT). Fresh myocardium (n = 6) and blood (n = 2) samples were bioassayed in mice. Results: The present study showed that 4.40% (15/341) of the dogs were seropositive for T. gondii by MAT (cut-off, 1:25) and 4.10% (8/195) of dog feces contained T. gondii DNA. No T. gondii DNA was found in any myocardium (n = 81) or blood (n = 2) samples. The viable T. gondii strain was not isolated from any myocardium or blood samples (n = 8). Compared to the prevalence of T. gondii antibodies in dogs sampled from 2015 to 2018, the prevalence significantly declined from 2020 to 2021 (P < 0.05). Gender and age were not risk factors for dogs infected with T. gondii in this study. However, compared to other sources, dogs from Zhoukou City (close to the Yellow River) or from pet shops showed significantly higher prevalence for T. gondii (P < 0.05). Conclusion: A total of 4.29% dogs were infected by T. gondii (23/536, 8 of 195 fecal samples, 2 of 260 serum, and 13 of 81 heart juice samples). The giant panda (Ailuropioda melanoleuca), a unique relic species in China and a global biodiversity conservation symbol, faces the threat of canine distemper virus (CDV). Vaccinating domestic dogs in panda habitats against CDV is crucial, yet the associated risks remain understudied. We investigated the safety of CDV vaccination in 69 domestic dogs within panda habitats, employing enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for CDV antibodies and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for viral RNA, a marker of viral shedding. Results revealed that vaccinated dogs posed a risk through viral shedding, mainly starting from the ninth day post-vaccination. Unvaccinated dogs exhibited increased CDV antibodies and subsequent shedding, with phylogenetic analysis confirming infection from vaccinated dogs in shared kennels. Dogs with higher initial antibodies displayed reduced shedding and a markedly abbreviated shedding duration (6.7 days) than those with lower initial antibodies (9.8 days). Habitat area analysis revealed substantial overlaps between domestic dogs and wild giant pandas in two nature reserves in China. To safeguard wildlife, particularly giant pandas, we recommend restricting vaccinated dogs' activity for at least three weeks post-vaccination, complementing existing management practices. Objective of this study is to investigate the epidemiological characteristics, clinical features, and treatment outcomes of canine mammary tumors in Dalian, providing insights into prevention and management strategies. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 198 cases of canine mammary tumors diagnosed in outpatient departments across several veterinary hospitals in Dalian. Data on breed, age, sex, tumor location, and clinical staging were collected and correlated with treatment modalities and prognosis. Poodles, Chinese pastoral dogs, and Cocker Spaniels exhibited higher incidence rates. The majority of affected dogs were middle-aged and older females, with unneutered dogs and those with a history of false pregnancies being at the highest risk. Benign tumors were more common in younger dogs, while malignant tumors predominated in older dogs, accounting for 89.9% of the cases. Early surgical intervention significantly improved survival and quality of life. Early detection, prompt surgical treatment, and post-operative follow-up are essential for optimal outcomes in canine mammary tumor management. In this study, a multiplex PCR method was developed for the detection of four diarrhea-associated viruses of canines, including canine bocavirus (CBoV), canine circovirus (CCV), torque teno canis virus (TTCV), and canine kobuvirus (CKV). Four pairs of compatible primers, one specific for each virus, were designed based on conserved sequences. After optimization of parameters such as primer concentration and annealing temperature in single and multiple amplifications, four specific fragments were amplified simultaneously with high sensitivity and specificity in one PCR reaction. The fragments amplified were 165 bp (CBoV), 345 bp (CCV), 506 bp (TTCV), and 666 bp (CKV) in length. The sensitivity of this one-step multiplex PCR is about 10 times lower than that of regular singleplex PCR. There was no cross-reaction with the canine pathogens canine parvovirus (CPV), canine distemper virus (CDV), or canine coronavirus (CCoV). Testing of canine fecal samples from China using the multiplex PCR assay revealed the presence of CBoV, CCV, TTCV, and CKV in 10.1%, 6.2%, 2.8%, and 1.7% of the samples, respectively. The results of multiplex PCR agreed with the singleplex PCR results with a coincidence rate of 100%. In addition, the complete genome sequences of the viruses in three CKV-positive samples were determined and found to be 95.7 - 96.6% identical to the reference strain US-PC0082 and genetically more distant from other animal kobuvirus. Mycotoxins, such as aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ), deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisins (FBs), ochratoxin A (OTA), T-2 toxin (T-2), and zearalenone (ZEN), can contaminate animal feeds and pose risks to animal health and production performance. These mycotoxins are commonly found in cereals and grains, with the increased use of cereals in pet food, there is a rising concern about mycotoxin contamination among pet owners. To address this, we analyzed imported brands of feline and canine food from the Chinese market produced in 2021-2022. Ninety-three samples were analyzed, comprising 45 feline food and 48 canine food samples. Among them, 14 were canned food and 79 were dry food. The results indicate that AFB 1 , DON, FBs, OTA, T-2, and ZEN occurred in 32.26%, 98.92%, 22.58%, 73.12%, 55.91%, and 7.53% of the samples, respectively. The most prevalent mycotoxin was DON, followed by OTA, T-2, AFB 1, and FBs, whereas ZEN was less frequently detected. The mean concentrations of the six mycotoxins in pet feed samples were 3.17 μg/kg for AFB 1 , 0.65 mg/kg for DON, 2.15 mg/kg for FBs, 6.27 μg/kg for OTA, 20.00 μg/kg for T-2, and 30.00 μg/kg for ZEN. The levels of mycotoxins were generally below the limits of the Pet Feed Hygiene Regulations of China and the EU. Notably, a substantial majority of the pet food samples (88 out of 93) were contaminated by two or more mycotoxins. AFB 1 , FBs, OTA, and ZEN occurred slightly more often in feline food than in canine food. Except for OTA, the contamination rates for the other five mycotoxins in canned food were lower than those in dry food. Moreover, except for AFB 1 , the levels of the other five mycotoxins in canned foods were lower than those in dry foods. Cystic echinococcosis, resulting from infection with Echinococcus granulosus, poses a significant challenge as a neglected tropical disease owing to the lack of any known effective treatment. Primarily affecting under-resourced, remote, and conflict-ridden regions, the disease is compounded by the limitations of current detection techniques, such as microscopy, physical imaging, ELISA, and qPCR, which are unsuitable for application in these areas. The emergence of CRISPR/Cas12a as a promising tool for nucleic acid detection, characterized by its unparalleled specificity, heightened sensitivity, and rapid detection time, offers a potential solution. In this study, we present a one-pot CRISPR/Cas12a detection method for E. granulosus (genotype G1, sheep strain) integrating recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) with suboptimal protospacer adjacent motif (PAM) and structured CRISPR RNA (crRNA) to enhance reaction efficiency. The evaluation of the assay's performance using hydatid cyst spiked dog feces and the examination of 62 dog fecal samples collected from various regions of Western China demonstrate its efficacy. The assay permits visual observation of test results about 15 minutes under blue light and displays superior portability and reaction speed relative to qPCR, achieving a sensitivity level of 10 copies of standard plasmids of the target gene. Analytic specificity was verified against four tapeworm species (E. multilocularis, H. taeniaeformis, M. benedeni, and D. caninum) and two other helminths (T. canis and F. hepatica), with negative results also noted for Mesocestoides sp. This study presents a rapid, sensitive, and time-efficient DNA detection method for E. granulosus of hydatid cyst spiked and clinical dog feces, potential serving as an alternative tool for field detection. This novel assay is primarily used to diagnose the definitive host of E. granulosus. The rapid emergence of Extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) is a major global public health concern. Previous studies have identified that intensive medical care of dogs and cats in veterinary hospitals have accelerated the infections and spread of ESBL-E. To investigate the spread of ESBL-E in a veterinary hospital, a total of 202 samples including hospitalized animals, veterinary healthcare workers and environment were collected from a veterinary hospital in Chengdu, China. ESBL-E were identified by antimicrobial susceptibility testing and 16 s rRNA sequencing and were further conducted on ESBL gene detection and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). At last, strains with transmission potential were analyzed by whole genome sequencing (WGS). Our results showed that the overall prevalence of ESBL-positive isolates was 34.7% (70/202), with 55.3% (26/47) in animals, 29.3% (12/41) in healthcare workers and 28.1% (32/114) in environment swabs. Twenty diverse MLST types were detected, with ST744, ST231 as the most prevalent ones. Transmission chains of two ESBL-E.coli (ST744 bla CTX-M-18 , bla TEM-1 ) from cat&#95;21 to cat&#95;14, and two ESBL-Kp (ST231 bla CTX-M-27 , bla TEM-1 , bla SHV-1 ) from cat&#95;20 to cat&#95;37 were further confirmed by WGS. The current study aimed at population genetic characterization of B. vogeli based on the cytochrome b (cyt b) gene sequences (≥ 685 bp) available in the GenBank. Phylogenetic trees placed all the sequences of B. vogeli in a single large monophyletic clade; however, it was further divided into two subclades (Bv1 and Bv2). Out of seven nucleotide variations observed between Bv1 and Bv2 subclades, four were synonymous (G92A, C170T, T488C and A659G), and three were non-synonymous (G324A, C438A and G465A) resulting in amino acid substitutions at three places (V108I, L146I and V155I). Within different B. vogeli populations, the nucleotide and haplotype diversities were low. The median-joining haplotype network revealed only two haplotypes (Hap&#95;1 and Hap&#95;2). A geographical sub-structuring was noticed in the B. vogeli populations, with moderate genetic differentiation (F ST  = 0.05000; P < 0.05) and a very high gene flow (Nm = 4.75) between Indian and Chinese populations. Neutrality tests and mismatch distributions for the Indian population and the overall dataset of B. vogeli indicated a constant population size. Background: Cryptosporidium spp. is a ubiquitous, globally distributed intestinal protozoan infecting humans and at least 260 animal hosts. Due to close human contact with pet dogs and identification of zoonotic Cryptosporidium species and subtypes in these animals, dog health is not only a veterinarian issue but also a public health issue. This study aimed to understand occurrence and genetic characterization at both genotype and subtype levels in pet dogs in Yunnan Province, China., Results: A total of 589 fresh fecal specimens were collected from adult pet dogs in the rural areas of eight cities/autonomous prefectures of Yunnan Province, China. 16 fecal specimens were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and sequence analysis of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene, with an average occurrence rate of 2.7% (16/589) being observed. Three zoonotic Cryptosporidium species were identified: C. parvum (n = 7), C. suis (n = 5) and C. canis (n = 4). At the 60-kDa glycoprotein (gp60) locus, only three C. parvum and two C. canis specimens were successfully amplified and sequenced, with subtype IIaA17G2R1 (n = 3) and subtypes XXa4 (n = 1) and XXa5 (n = 1) being identified, respectively., Conclusions: The present finding of three zoonotic Cryptosporidium species in dogs implied that dogs infected with Cryptosporidium spp. may pose a threat to human health. C. suis was identified in dogs in this study for the first time, expanding the host range of this species. Background: Rabies is an incessant public health threat in China. The Ministry of Health implemented the Central Payment for Rabies Prevention and Control Project to assist with rabies prevention and control in a few representative provinces in 2006., Methods: Data on human rabies cases reported by the National Infectious Disease Reporting Information Management System and national surveillance sites from 2006 to 2022 were collected, and statistical and multivariate analyses were then used to assess the effectiveness of current prevention and control efforts., Results: During 2006-2022, a total of 2025 human rabies cases were collected by the national surveillance sites, with incidence rates far above the national average, but the incidence rate was consistent with the national trend. Human rabies cases demonstrated a dual peak distribution in terms of exposure and onset dates, with the peak exposure dates falling mostly in the spring and summer and the peak onset dates occurring mostly in the summer and autumn. Three danger categories are shown by the geographical distribution: high, medium and low. Dogs had a high infection rate (86.93%), with own domesticated dogs accounting for the majority of infections. The rates of post-exposure prophylaxis are not constant. The median incubation period was 71 days., Conclusions: Various measures and policies implemented by the government have played a key role in reducing the incidence of rabies. Background: The virulence of Yersinia pestis strains in the Rattus flavipectus plague focus is relatively low. The purpose of this study was to investigate the undetected, sporadic plague cases in plague foci and provide the basis for plague prevention and control., Methods: A 3-year-old plague-confirmed case was investigated in the R. flavipectus plague focus of Yunnan Province in 2020 due to the intensive screening for fever symptoms during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Epidemiological investigation, laboratory testing, and clinical treatment were conducted for the case. The expanded survey was carried out around the case within a 7-km radius, including the resident population, domesticated dogs, and rats. PCR and indirect hemagglutination tests were performed on the collected samples., Results: The isolation rates of Y. pestis were 100.0% (7 out of 7) in dead rats and 4.00% (3 out of 75) in live rats in the survey area of the foci. A total of 5.00% (6 out of 120) of the domesticated dogs were F1 antibody positive. Nine local people were determined for plague infection recently (0.92%, 9 out of 978). This study presents a brief inquiry into the human-canine relationship among the Tyvan pastoralists in the Altai-Sayan Mountainous region of Inner Asia. Their co-evolution is intimately bound together, and the inter-species relationship includes several aspects and roles. The authors investigate especially the dogs' responsibilities in taiga and steppe habitats and how the language reveals these responsibilities by focusing on distinctions between hunting dogs (aŋčï ït) and camp guarding dogs (kodančï ït). Both names point at the main tasks--hunting and guarding the seasonal campsite territory. The third category is named xava dogs; the name traces its origin to Chinese languages. The design of an effective brand story has become a key issue in marketing strategies. This study aims to explore what kinds of brand stories (underdog or top dog) individuals prefer from the perspective of the level of self-construal and the need for uniqueness. In this study, a questionnaire survey was used to collect data from China. One-way analysis of variance and bootstrapping via the Process plug-in were adopted to test the hypotheses. This study confirms that individuals with independent self-construal have a higher need for uniqueness and prefer underdog brand stories, while individuals with interdependent self-construal have a lower need for uniqueness and prefer the top dog brand story. This paper promotes theoretical research in the fields of self-construal, the need for uniqueness, and brand stories, and provides rich theoretical support for enterprises in designing and adjusting brand stories. Research has suggested that domestic dogs may have undergone simultaneous domestication in both the eastern and western parts of the Eurasian continent. Alternatively, domestication may have originated in the eastern part of Eurasia and subsequently spread westwards. The northeastern region of China, which serves as a link between the expansive Eurasian steppe and the northern regions of China, is of paramount importance for investigating the origin and domestication of dogs. To establish a precise spatiotemporal framework for the genetic history of ancient dogs in China, this study conducted mitochondrial genome analysis on 110 samples obtained from five archaeological sites in the northeastern region of China, spanning from the Neolithic period to the Bronze Age. This study reveals the developmental history of domestic dogs in the Northeast region, emphasizing the close connections between domestic dogs in Northeast China approximately 10,000 to 7000 years ago and ancient domestic dogs from the Siberian Arctic and the Americas. Furthermore, around 6000 years ago, domestic dogs from the Yangtze and Yellow River basins in China gradually spread to Northeast China, leading to the replacement of the original domestic dog haplotypes. Echinococcosis is a serious zoonotic parasitic disease transmitted from canines to humans and livestock. Periodic deworming is recommended by the WHO/OIE as a highly effective measure against echinococcosis. However, manual deworming involves significant challenges, particularly in remote areas with scarce resources. The insufficient awareness delivering praziquantel (PZQ) baits for dogs leads to low compliance rate. The aim of this study was therefore to develop a novel smart collar for dogs to address these challenges. We developed a smart Internet of Things (IoT)-based deworming collar which can deliver PZQ baits for dogs automatically, regularly, quantitatively with predominant characteristics of being waterproof, anti-collision, cold-proof and long life battery. Its performance was tested in two remote locations on the Tibetan Plateau. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to evaluate the compliance of the dog owners. Further, a randomized controlled study was performed to evaluate the difference between smart-collar deworming and manual deworming. The collar's effectiveness was further assessed on the basis of Generalized Estimation Equations (GEE). The testing and evaluation was done for 10 smart deworming collars in factory laboratory, 18 collars attached for 18 dogs in Seni district, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, and 523 collars attached for 523 dogs in Hezuo city, Gansu province, China. The anti-collision, waterproof, and coldproof proportion of the smart collars were 100.0%, 99.5%, and 100.0%, respectively. When compared to manual deworming, the dogs' risk of infection with Echinococcus on smart-collar deworming is down to 0.182 times (95% CI: 0.049, 0.684) in Seni district and 0.355 (95%CI: 0.178, 0.706) in Hezuo city, the smart collar has a significant protective effect. The owners' overall compliance rate to attach the smart collars for their dogs was 89%. The smart deworming collar could effectively reduce the dogs' risk of infection with Echinococcus in dogs, significantly increase the deworming frequency and coverage and rapidly remove worm biomass in dogs. Thus, it may be a promising alternative to manual deworming, particularly in remote areas on the Tibetan Plateau. Author summary: Echinococcosis remains a critical but neglected zoonotic parasitic disease transmitted between canines and livestock or wild rodents. Dogs play a key role in Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) and E. multilocularis transmission, dual infection also occurs in dogs in co-endemic regions in China. The initial egg-production phase occurs over a span of 34–58 days (E. granulosus) or 28–35 days (E. multilocularis) following infection. The free-living eggs, voided with faeces of the definitive host, can withstand extreme weather conditions and remain viable for 240 days (E. granulosus) or 41 months (E. multilocularis) in the environment. Removal or reduction of the worm biomass in dogs will have the greatest and fastest effect in terms of reducing active transmission. In China, although significant efforts have been expended to achieve monthly manual deworming, the actual frequency and coverage thereof remain low; therefore, Echinococcus spp. is still highly prevalent among dogs. Moreover, echinococcosis transmission is still rampant, as the heavy disease burden suggests. We propose a novel, smart, Internet of Things (IoT)-based deworming tool that can deliver PZQ baits to dogs regularly and automatically. It could increase the deworming frequency and coverage significantly, reduce the risk of infection by down to 0.182–0.355 times, and prevent canine infections by removing the worm biomass in dogs rapidly. This deworming collar could also potentially prevent the transmission of echinococcosis from dogs to humans and livestock completely. It may be an excellent alternative to existing manual deworming methods, and the difficulties associated with performing deworming in remote areas with scarce resources can be overcome. Since the discovery of PZQ as the most effective antiworm drug, few breakthroughs have been achieved in terms of novel tools and technologies for the control of echinococcosis. Over the last 50 years, echinococcosis control measures have lagged to keep up with the World Health Organization (WHO) roadmap for the elimination of the disease owing to the practical difficulties in remote areas with scarce resources as well as the lack of promotion of new technologies. Background: Ticks are one of the most common external parasites in dogs, and are associated with the transmission of a number of major zoonoses, which result in serious harm to human health and even death. Also, the increasing number of pet dogs and pet owners in China has caused concern regarding human tick-borne illnesses. Accordingly, studies are needed to gain a complete understanding of the bacterial composition and diversity of the ticks that parasitize dogs. Objectives: To date, there have been relatively few reports on the analysis of the bacterial community structure and diversity in ticks that parasitize dogs. The objective of this study was to investigate the microbial composition and diversity of parasitic ticks of dogs, and assessed the effect of tick sex and geographical region on the bacterial composition in two tick genera collected from dogs in China. Methods: A total of 178 whole ticks were subjected to a 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) next generation sequencing analysis. The Illumina MiSeq platform targeting the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was used to characterize the bacterial communities of the collected ticks. Sequence analysis and taxonomic assignment were performed using QIIME 2 and the GreenGene database, respectively. After clustering the sequences into taxonomic units, the sequences were quality-filtered and rarefied. Results: After pooling 24 tick samples, we identified a total of 2,081 operational taxonomic units, which were assigned to 23 phyla and 328 genera, revealing a diverse bacterial community profile. The high, moderate and low prevalent taxa include 46, 101, and 182 genera, respectively. Among them, dominant taxa include environmental bacterial genera, such as Psychrobacter and Burkholderia. Additionally, some known tick-associated endosymbionts were also detected, including Coxiella, Rickettsia, and Ricketssiella. Also, the potentially pathogenic genera Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas were detected in the tick pools. Moreover, our preliminary study found that the differences in microbial communities are more dependent on the sampling location than tick sex in the tick specimens collected from dogs. Salmonella, as a zoonotic pathogen, has attracted widespread attention worldwide, especially in the transmission between household pets and humans. Therefore, we investigated the epidemic distribution of dog Salmonella from pet hospitals and breeding base in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, and used multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPRs) to subtype Salmonella isolates. From April 2018 to November 2019, a total of 469 samples were collected from pet hospitals and breeding base, including 339 dog samples and 60 cat samples. S. Kentucky (40.74%) was the most prevalent serotype, but other, such as S. Typhimurium (18.52%) and S. Indiana (18.52%), were also widespread. Eight different sequence type (ST) patterns were identified by MLST and ST198 was the highest proportion of these isolates. CRISPRs analysis showed that 9 different Kentucky CRISPR types (KCTs) was identified from ST198. 48 spacers including 29 (6 News) for CRISPR1 and 19 (4 News) for CRISPR2 that proved the polymorphic of Salmonella genes in samples from different sources. The analysis demonstrated that the common serotypes were widely present in pet hosts in the same area. This analysis shows that CRISPR genes have better recognition ability in the same serotype, which has a positive effect on the traceability of Salmonella and the prevention and treatment of salmonellosis.
