The QJM: An International Journal of Medicine has published two articles on the prevalence of mental illness in healthcare workers and patient families during the COVID-19 surge in China. The first article found that 71% of healthcare workers experienced depressive symptoms and 48% experienced anxiety symptoms. Factors such as mindfulness, resilience, and social support were found to be protective against these symptoms. The second article found that family members of intensive care patients with COVID-19 had a higher prevalence of mental health issues compared to a control group. These issues were more likely in females, those in rural areas, and those with physically demanding occupations. The journal also includes a review on the heart-brain axis in heart failure, highlighting the bidirectional interactions between the heart and the central nervous system that contribute to the severity and progression of the disease. The authors emphasize the need for interdisciplinary research to improve treatment options for heart failure patients. [Extracted from the article]
