Will underdeveloped economies be able to achieve development in the twenty-first century? To advance towards a potential response to this question, this paper analyzes some aspects of the development processes of South Korea and China, pointing to the exceptional geopolitical and strategic conditions behind why their models are unsuitable to emulate. It also highlights the state authoritarianism, strict planning and discipline of both the ruling and ruled classes to guide investment and the growth of specific economic sectors. The author delineates the configuration of the Chinese Buddhist ecology in post-Mao China by focusing on three major types of religious actor found in the ecology. She spells out how the interactions between the internal characteristics of religious groups and external structural conditions have shaped the development patterns of groups in each type. First, the dominant Buddhist temples, which enjoy state recognition, have been beset by the hollowing-out process. Second, the type of Buddhist groups with ambiguous legal status has been growing vigorously in the interstices of the current Chinese socio-political structure but faces uncertainties. An array of actors and forms, including self-appointed monks and the mixed form of Buddhism and popular religion, exist on the fringe of institutional Buddhism and constitute the third type. Within this type, the syncretic sects, receiving censure from both the state and the Buddhist establishment, are forced to operate underground. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This study analyzes the recent phenomenon of special economic zones (SEZ) in the world. It presents the case of Shenzhen, a city in Guangdong, in the People's Republic of China (PRC), because a more successful result has been achieved there in the strategy of neo-institutional economic reform and the external opening of that country in the last three decades. This result indicates the articulation of a gradual and long-term strategy, which has enabled China to insert itself successfully into the international economy. In contrast, the case of Mexico is studied, a nation which has pursued a type of economic reform and external opening without the expected economic and regional results. We therefore conclude that it is necessary to understand the case of the so-called SEZ if a strategy similar to China's is to be embarked upon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
