Background: Macular hole retinal detachment (MHRD) occurs most commonly in high myopia and causes severe visual impairment and greatly reduces the quality of life. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of inverted internal limiting membrane insertion combined with air tamponade in the treatment of MHRD in high myopia, and also to compare the treatment efficacy with that of the conventional "vitrectomy plus internal limiting membrane peeling plus silicone oil tamponade" method for high myopia-associated MHRD., Methods/design: In this clinical trial, 38 patients with MHRD in high myopia will be randomly assigned to two groups (Group 1: standard 3-port 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy plus internal limiting membrane peeling plus air-fluid exchange plus silicone oil infusion; Group 2: standard 3-port 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy plus internal limiting membrane peeling plus inverted internal limiting membrane insertion plus air-fluid exchange). The primary outcome is macular hole closure rate in 3 months after the initial surgery. The secondary outcomes are best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), reattachment rate of retinal detachment, and postoperative complication rate., Discussion: The study results may help to evaluate the efficacy and safety of inverted internal limiting membrane insertion combined with air tamponade in the treatment of MHRD in high myopia, and also compare the efficacy of the new treatment with the conventional "vitrectomy plus internal limiting membrane peeling plus silicone oil tamponade" method. This trial may provide a novel surgical treatment for MHRD in high myopia with more effectiveness and less pain., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03383731 . Registered on 19 December 2017. Background: To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with idiopathic epiretinal membranes (iERM) in a Chinese population aged 60 years or older in Beixinjing Blocks, Shanghai., Methods: This population-based study consisted of 3727 participants (89.7% of the eligible). It was performed to describe the prevalence of iERM and possible demographic, systemic, and ocular factors associated with iERM. Each participant underwent a standardized interview and comprehensive ophthalmic examination. iERM was identified and graded from retinal photographs. Then, a case-control study comparing the participants with vs. without iERM was performed to further study the associations between iERM and blood biochemical test results (including fasting plasma glucose, serum creatinine, total cholesterol, and triglyceride), ocular biological parameters (including the axial length, corneal curvature, refractive diopter, intraocular press, and anterior chamber depth), and the data of optical coherence tomography., Results: The prevalence of iERM was 1.02%. iERM was significantly associated with diabetes (OR: 2.457; 95% CI: 1.137, 5.309) and a higher level of education (OR: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.123, 1.952). Blood biochemical test results and ocular biological parameters showed no significant differences between the iERM and control groups, whereas the incidence of posterior vitreous detachment in the iERM group was much higher than in the control group (26.5% vs. 8.8%), but this difference was not statistically significant. Moreover, the eyes with iERM had poorer visual acuity than the eyes without iERM (P<0.05)., Conclusions: In Beixinjing Blocks, Shanghai, iERM was relatively rare, was associated with diabetes and a higher level of education, and caused a substantial decrease in visual acuity.

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of epiretinal membranes in the adult Chinese population., Methods: The Beijing Eye Study, a population-based, cross-sectional cohort study, included 4439 subjects out of 5324 subjects invited to participate (response rate 83.4%) with an age of 40+ years. The present investigation consisted of 4378 (98.6%) subjects for whom readable fundus photographs (30 degrees nonstereoscopic colour images) were available. Assessing the fundus photographs, we differentiated two membrane types: cellophane maculopathy and premacular fibrosis., Results: Prevalence rate of epiretinal membranes was 2.2+/-0.2% (mean+/-SE) (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.9,2.5) per eye or 2.2+/-0.2% (95% CI: 1.8,2.7) per subject. In binary logistic regression analysis, the prevalence of epiretinal membranes was significantly associated with age (P<0.001; 95% CI: 1.07,1.12), visual field loss (P<0.001; 95% CI: 1.03,1.07), hyperopia (P=0.02; 95% CI: 1.01,1.18), and higher education (P<0.001; 95% CI: 1.29,1.74). Cellophane maculopathy showed a prevalence rate of 1.11+/-0.1% (95% CI: 0.9,1.3) per eye and 1.8+/-0.2% (95% CI: 1.4,2.2) per subject. Its prevalence was significantly associated with age (P<0.001; 95% CI: 1.08,1.13), higher education (P<0.001; 95% CI: 1.26,1.92), and visual field loss (P=0.009; 95% CI: 1.01,1.07). Premacular fibrosis had a prevalence rate of 1.06+/-0.1% (95% CI: 0.9,1.3) per eye and 1.8+/-0.2% (95% CI: 1.4,2.2) per subject. It was significantly associated with age (P<0.001; 95% CI: 1.06,1.11), higher level of education (P<0.001; 95% CI: 1.15,1.74), and visual field loss (P=0.001; 95% CI: 1.02,1.08)., Conclusion: In adult Chinese in Greater Beijing, epiretinal membranes including cellophane maculopathy and premacular fibrosis occur in a relatively low frequency which may be lower than in Western countries. Epiretinal membranes including its subtypes of cellophane maculopathy and epiretinal fibrosis were associated with age and hyperopic refractive error.
