The world's dependency on cobalt mines in Congo and cobalt refineries in China is seen as serious security issues with potentially dangerous implications for the energy transition. However, Chinese refineries have a similar supply security issue as most of its cobalt concentrates are imported. Most supply security studies take a country perspective on market concentration and supply risks. However, control of the mines and refineries lies with the producing companies, not the governments of the countries where they are located. This paper analyses the corporate structure of the cobalt industry at the mine and the refinery stages over a longer time period to establish changes in the level of corporate concentration and to put the situation in 2018 in perspective. The level of corporate concentration at the mine stage is low and does not raise concerns for market failures or a lack of competitiveness. Corporate concentration of refined cobalt depends on the Chinese government's influence over Chinese production: if the state control over individual refineries is assumed to be strong, the corporate concentration is high. Mine stage supply security could be strengthened by improving the general political stability in the DRC to make the country more attractive for investors other than the present ones. Increased local beneficiation would strongly benefit Congo and reduce China's influence. This is a long and complicated process and its success is not at all certain. At the initiative of the Government of the People's Republic of China, a letter of intent concerning a joint undertaking for studying children with intellectual disability in China was formulated together with the Swedish Government's Ministry of Social Affairs in the early 1990s. The Swedish Board of Health and Welfare invited Uppsala University to set up a consulting team through the Centre for Disability Research. On the Chinese side, the task was given to China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF), whose overriding task is the representation of and guarding the legal rights of persons with disabilities. Under the auspice of the CDPF, researchers from China and Sweden jointly identified three areas of work: iodine deficiency, developmental screening, and rehabilitation. This article describes the project's activities within the Sino-Swedish Project, initiated in 1995. The Sino-Swedish Project was implemented in the least developed and consequently poorest western/northwestern interior parts of the country and overall work was carried out on a county-level (i.e., target areas were predominately rural albeit located in townships and villages). The experiences gained have formed the basis for further implementation throughout the country.

Chinese companies are far from taking control over African or global mining. In 2018, they control less than 7% of the value of total African mine production. Chinese investments in African mining of non-fuel minerals between 1995 and 2018 have contributed to production growth but it has also increased Chinese control over African mineral and metal production. There is evidence pointing to a continued Chinese expansion in African minerals and metals but at a slower pace than in the past decade. Through a detailed analysis of every mine, fully or partially controlled by Chinese interest in Africa and all other parts of the world the paper also measures total Chinese control over global mine production to be around 3% of the total value. • Glycosylations of Epotin™, Hemax® and Jimaixin™ were analyzed for the first time. • Antidoping methods and criteria were used to evaluate the Biosimilars. • Electrophoretic methods revealed differences from the original rEPO drug. • N-glycan analysis by MALDI-TOF MS confirmed structural differences. • N-glycan analysis by HILIC-fluorescence MS revealed O-acetylation particularities. Recombinant human erythropoietin (rEPO) biosimilars are copies of epoetin drugs developed after the first patents ended. However differences in the process of production can result in small structural differences when compared to the reference product. Differences in N-glycosylation profiles are of particular importance for rEPOs, because they can drastically impact the half-life in circulation and activity. Changes of structure can also impact electrophoretic profiles that are used to reveal the presence of a rEPO in a doping control sample. In this study three not well characterized biosimilars were evaluated (Jimaixin™ authorized in China, and Hemax ® and Epotin™ authorized in Algeria). As these products could be used for doping, first their EPO profiles were determined using the antidoping methods (electrophoretic separation by the charge (isolectric focusing, IEF-PAGE) or the molecular weight (SDS-PAGE) and specific EPO immunodetection). Compared to the original epoetin alfa Eprex ® , it revealed more basic isoforms for Epotin ™ and Jimaixin ™ after IEF-PAGE and a slightly lower molecular weight after SDS-PAGE in particular for Hemax ®. To better understand the reason for these differences, EPO specific N-glycans were evaluated using two complementary approaches: MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MS) and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) with fluorescence detection. All three biosimilars presented a significant decrease in the major glycan forms of Eprex ® along with an increase in less complex forms. Jimaixin ™ and Epotin ™ presented also a lower amount of fully sialylated forms. HILIC method also showed that O-acetylation level of sialic acid residues might vary from one rEPO to the other.
