Background: Developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by early-onset seizures predominantly attributed to genetic causes. Nevertheless, numerous patients remain without identification of a genetic cause. Methods: We present four unrelated Chinese patients with SPOUT1 compound heterozygous variants, all of whom were diagnosed with DEE. We also investigated functions of SPOUT1 using the spout1 knockout zebrafish model. Results: The four unrelated DEE patients with SPOUT1 compound heterozygous variants were all males. Their onset age of seizure ranged from 3 months to 6 months (median age 5 months). All patients had epileptic spasms, and were diagnosed with infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS). Three patients had microcephaly during infancy. Brain MRI in three patients showed white matter hypomyelination and bilaterally widened frontotemporal subarachnoid space. At the last follow-up, two patients exhibited drug-resistant epilepsy, one achieved seizure freedom following vigabatrin treatment, and one died at the age of 4 years and 5 months from probable sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Seven different SPOUT1 variants were identified in the four patients, including six missense variants and one deletion variant. AlphaFold2 prediction indicated that all variants alternated the number or the length of bonds between animo acids in protein SPOUT1. Neurophysiological results from spout1 knockout zebrafish revealed the presence of epileptiform signals in 9 out of 63 spout1 knockout zebrafishes (P = 0.009). Transcriptome sequencing revealed 21 differentially expressed genes between spout1 knockout and control groups, including 13 up-regulated and 8 down-regulated genes. Two axonal transport-related genes, kif3a and ap3d1, were most prominently involved in enriched Gene Ontology (GO) terms. Conclusions: This study identified SPOUT1 as a novel candidate gene of DEE, which follows the autosomal-recessive inheritance pattern. IESS is the most common epilepsy syndrome. Background: Studies have reported that polyphyllin I (PPI) had effective anti-tumor activity against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the precise molecular mechanism of this action and the direct target remain unclear. The aim of this study was to discover the molecular targets and the exact mechanism of PPI in the treatment of HCC. Methods: Various HCC cells and Zebrafish xenotransplantation models were used to examine the efficacy of PPI against HCC. A proteome microarray, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) analysis, small molecule transfection, and molecular docking were conducted to confirm the direct binding targets of PPI. Transcriptome and Western blotting were then used to determine the exact responding mechanism. Finally, the anticancer effect and its precise mechanism, as well as the safety of PPI, were verified using a mouse tumor xenograft study. Results: The results demonstrated that PPI had significant anticancer activity against HCC in both in vitro studies of two cells and the zebrafish model. Notably, PPI selectively enhanced the action of the Zinc finger and BTB domain-containing 16 (ZBTB16) protein by directly binding to it. Furthermore, specific knockdown of ZBTB16 markedly attenuated PPI-dependent inhibition of HCC cell proliferation and migration caused by overexpression of the gene. The transcriptome and Western blotting also confirmed that the interaction between ZBTB16 and PPI also activated the PPARγ/RXRα pathway. Finally, the mouse experiments confirmed the efficacy and safety of PPI to treat HCC. Conclusions: Our results indicate that ZBTB16 is a promising drug target for HCC and that PPI as a potent ZBTB16 agonist has potential as a therapeutic agent against HCC by regulating the ZBTB16/PPARγ/RXRα signaling axis. Aim: If the positive occupancy–abundance relationship prevails, locally abundant species are widely distributed. Although broadly supported, studies on lake fishes have thus far contributed little to this topic, especially at intermediate and small spatial scales. Here, the main objective was to investigate the relationship between occupancy and abundance of lake fish species within a large lake, as well as examine the relative importance of ecological niches, functional traits and phylogenetic relatedness in forming the relationship. Location: Poyang Lake, China. Taxon: Fishes. Methods: We calculated occupancy and mean abundance for 78 fish species and estimated niche position and niche breadth for each species based on a set of environmental variables. Additionally, we generated four functional trait vectors and one phylogenetic vector, describing trait similarity and phylogenetic relatedness, respectively. Linear models, hierarchical partitioning analyses and boosted regression trees were used in combination to explore the relative role of niche position, niche breadth, trait vectors and phylogenetic relatedness in determining fish occupancy, abundance and their relationship. Results: Occupancy and mean abundance of fish species in Poyang Lake showed a significantly positive and rather strong interspecific relationship. Interspecific variations in fish occupancy and abundance were well accounted for by niche position, followed by niche breadth. Nonetheless, trait vectors and phylogenetic relatedness were of minor importance in affecting fish occupancy and abundance. Additionally, occupancy was better explained than abundance by the predictor variables used, which was shown by both linear models and boosted regression trees. Main Conclusions: This study suggests that the positive correlation between occupancy and abundance also occurs in lake fish species. Furthermore, ecological niche features, especially niche position, were more important than functional traits and phylogenetic relatedness in accounting for occupancy and abundance of fish species in Poyang Lake. Aim: Understanding the patterns and drivers of biodiversity across space and time is commonly based on species diversity, which may ignore species' functional role and evolutionary history and result in an incomplete understanding of community assembly. It is suggested that integrating species, functional, and phylogenetic diversity could provide a more holistic assessment of community assembly in natural ecosystems. This study aimed to explore the elevational patterns and environmental drivers of multiple facets of fish diversity and community structure in a subtropical river during the wet and dry seasons. Location: The Chishui River basin, China. Methods: We investigated the responses of fish species richness, functional richness, and phylogenetic diversity to elevation in different seasons. Moreover, we compared functional dispersion and mean pairwise distance with those obtained from null models to infer assembly mechanisms shaping community structure. Additionally, we examined the environmental drivers (e.g. water chemistry, temperature, and river size) of fish diversity and community structure. Results: Fish species richness, functional richness, and phylogenetic diversity showed a negative relationship with elevation in the Chishui River basin. Fish communities tended to be on average functionally random but phylogenetically clustered. Furthermore, phylogenetic structure exhibited a decreasing pattern along the elevational gradient. Despite no significant seasonal changes for fish diversity (except for phylogenetic diversity), fish communities became more phylogenetically overdispersed and clustered at low and high elevations in the dry season. Additionally, the responses of fish diversity and community structure to environmental variables were not synchronous. Conclusions: At the basin scale, environmental filtering was prevalent in shaping fish phylogenetic structure, whereas stochasticity was likely more important for functional structure. Moreover, the ecological mechanisms shaping individual fish communities switched from limiting similarity to environmental filtering as elevation increased, and the underlying forces at two ends of the elevational gradient became more prominent in the dry season. To alleviate the growth inhibition, and intestinal damage of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) induced by low fishmeal diets (LF), an 8-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the addition of dietary soybean-derived bioactive peptides (SBP) in LF diets on the regulation of growth, digestion and intestinal health. The crabs were fed isonitrogenous and isoenergetic conventional diet and LF diets (10 % fishmeal replaced by soybean meal, LF) supplemented with 0, 1 %, 2 %, 4 % and 6 % SBP, respectively. The results showed that LF diet inhibited growth while inclusion of SBP quadratically remitted the growth inhibition induced by LF. For digestive function, increasing addition level of SBP quadratically improved the α -amylase and trypsin activities. For antioxidant function, LF group significantly increased the malondialdehyde content, while SBP linearly decreased the malondialdehyde level and cubically increased the anti-superoxide anion activity and total antioxidant capacity level. For intestinal health, the peritrophic membrane (PM) almost completely separated from the inner wall of the intestinal lumen, the epithelial cells reduced, the muscularis became thinner and the apoptotic signals increased in LF group; with SBP addition, the intestinal morphology was improved, with the PM adhering to the inner wall of the intestinal lumen, an increase in the number of epithelial cells and an increase in the thickness of the muscularis. Additionally, there was a decrease in apoptotic signals. Length-weight relationships are presented for twelve fish species collected at 22 sampling points in the Heishui River, a priority tributary for fish conservation in the mainstream of the Baihetan Reservoir area, China. A combination of gill nets was used for sampling over a period between November 2018 and May 2021. The gill nets consisted of 12 nets per point with dimensions of 20 × 2 m (length and width), mesh size ranging from 20 to 80 mm, and soaking depth ranging from 40 to 160 cm. In addition, fixed gill nets were employed, with 10 nets per point having dimensions of 10 to 30 m in length and 1.5 to 2.5 m in width. The mesh size of these fixed gill nets was 10, 15, or 20 mm. This study presents the length-weight relationships of twelve species for the first time in the Heishui River Basin, including the new maximum body length of Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck and Schlegel, 1846). The slope (b) values for the assessed species ranged from 2.5 to 3.5. All the estimated relationships are highly significant (P < 0.05) with a high coefficient of determination R 2 ranging from 0.9574 to 0.9997. It is expected that the results obtained from this study will contribute to filling the knowledge gap in this area and also assist fisheries scientists in future assessment studies. Organotin compounds (OTs) accumulate in fish easily, however, research on their influencing factors is still limited. This study collected 25 species of fish with different diets, habitats, and age from the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the largest deep-water river channel-type reservoir in China, and analyzed the accumulation characteristics of OTs in these fish. The results showed that tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) were the dominant OTs in fish from the TGR. The correlation between OTs concentration and age, body length, and body weight varied with fish species. The concentrations of TBT and TPhT in carnivorous fish (mean, 25.78 and 11.69 ng Sn/g dw, respectively) were higher than those in other diet fish (P<0.01), but there was no significant difference in fish at different habitat water layers (P>0.05). In addition, the degradation rates of TBT and TPhT in different fish species were all below 50%. In summary, the accumulation of TBT and TPhT in fish is mainly influenced by diet, and both TBT and TPhT were difficult to degrade in fish. These results reveal the pollution characteristics of OTs in fish from the TGR, and can improve our understanding of the factors influencing TBT and TPhT accumulation in freshwater fish. The current state of geriatric disease prevention and treatment in China has not yet been able to meet the urgent needs brought about by an aging population, and specific dietary patterns can significantly improve or exacerbate the risk of certain diseases. However, the relationship between geriatric diseases and the dietary patterns of the Chinese elderly population has not been fully explored. CLHLS 2018 were analyzed in the present study. Principal component analysis was employed to identify the main dietary patterns of the Chinese elderly, and binary logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations between these dietary patterns and the 16 common diseases. Four main dietary patterns were identified in the Chinese elderly population: Egg-Milk Pattern, Salt-preserved vegetable-Nut Pattern, Vegetable-Fruit Pattern, and Fish-Meat Pattern. Higher scores for the Egg-Milk Pattern were associated with a greater risk of heart disease, stroke or cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, glaucoma, prostate tumor, and Parkinson's disease in older adults (p<0.05). Higher scores for Salt-preserved vegetable-Nut Pattern correlated with a greater risk of hypertension, heart disease, and uterine tumors and a lower risk of rheumatism or rheumatoid disease in older adults (P<0.05). The higher scores of the Vegetable-Fruit Pattern were associated with a lower risk of heart disease in older adults (p<0.05). Finally, higher scores of the Fish-Meat Pattern correlated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular disease and a greater risk of rheumatic or rheumatoid disease in older adults (p<0.05). The same dietary pattern may have contrasting effects on different diseases. Background: To rehabilitate the depleted fish resources of the Yangtze River Basin, China, a 10-year fishing ban has been implemented. This national initiative has attracted worldwide attention. The present study aimed to explore the ecological process and recovery effectiveness of this complete fishing ban in the Chishui River, the first river where the fishing ban was enacted in the Yangtze River Basin. Changes in fish resources were analyzed based on investigations conducted 5 years before (2012–2016) and 5 years after (2017–2021) the implementation of the fishing ban in four reaches along the longitudinal gradient. Results: A total of 140 fish species, including 127 native and 13 exotic species, were collected during the study period. The number of fish species as well as the diversity indices showed no significant temporal changes. However, 11 native species that had disappeared for many years appeared again after the fishing ban. The occurrence rates of some key protected species, Procypris rabaudi, Acipenser dabryanus, Euchiloglanis davidi and Myxocyprinus asiaticus, increased after the fishing ban, while Coreius guichenoti, Percocypris pingi, Onychostoma angustistomata and Leptobotia rubrilabris showed no obvious recovery. The fish assemblage structure in nearly all reaches (except the headwater) showed significant temporal changes with an increase in the relative abundance of larger body-sized species. The population structure of most dominant species improved greatly with the mean standard length and the mean body weight as well as the proportion of larger-sized individuals clearly increasing. In addition, the density of fishes changed dramatically with the catch per unit effort (CPUE) increasing by 140–210% for different study reaches. Conclusions: The present study confirmed that the complete fishing closure is an effective measure to facilitate fish resources recovery. Purpose: Different populations may exhibit differences in dietary intakes, which may result in heterogeneities in diet–disease associations. We compared intakes of major food groups overall, by sex, and by socio-economic status (SES) (defined as both education and income), between participants in the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) and the UK Biobank (UKB). Methods: Data were from ~ 25,000 CKB participants who completed a validated interviewer-administered computer-based questionnaire (2013–2014) and ~ 74,000 UKB participants who completed ≥ 3 web-based 24-h dietary assessments (2009–2012). Intakes of 12 major food groups and five beverages were harmonized and compared between the cohorts overall, by sex and by SES. Multivariable-adjusted linear regression examined the associations between dietary intakes and body mass index (BMI) in each cohort. Results: CKB participants reported consuming more rice, eggs, vegetables, soya products, and less wheat, other staple foods (other than rice and wheat), fish, poultry, all dairy products, fruit, and beverages compared to UKB participants. Red meat intake was similar in both cohorts. Having a higher SES was generally associated with a higher consumption of foods and beverages in CKB, whereas in UKB dietary intakes differed more by education and income, with a positive association observed for meat and income in both UKB and CKB but an inverse association observed for education in UKB. Associations of dietary intakes with BMI varied between the two cohorts. Conclusion: The large differences in dietary intakes and their associations with SES and BMI could provide insight into the interpretation of potentially different diet–disease associations between CKB and UKB. Toddalia asiatica (L.) Lam. (TA) is a traditional folk medicine of ethnic minorities in the southwest of China. It is widely used in the treatment of dispersing blood stasis and activating blood. However, the effective substance and pharmacological mechanism have not been fully elucidated. The zebrafish larvae were treated with Phenylhydrazine (PHZ) to establish a thrombus model, and the staining intensity of zebrafish red blood cells was analyzed. The antithrombotic activity of TA was verified for the first time, and it was found that the inhibition rate of TA on thrombosis was up to 60.85 %. The chemical ingredients of TA were collected by combining UPLC-HRMS analysis and the literature research. Network pharmacology revealed that six key targets were obtained, which including TNF, AKT1, EGFR, PTGS2, PPARG, and IFNG. It showed that the PI3K-Akt pathway was a core signaling pathway. Coagulation factor III(TF), playing an important role in the process of hemostasis and thrombosis, which ranks high in the PPI network. Moreover, the results of molecular docking showed that the active components had a strong binding force with TF, which indicated that TF might be the key target of TA in treating thrombosis. In vitro experiments showed that TA could inhibit TNF-α-induced high expression of TF in EA.hy926 cells. In addition, TA could inhibit TNF-α-activated expression of Akt, IκBα and P65 protein phosphorylation in PI3K-Akt pathway. The results showed that TA had antithrombotic activity and exerted an antithrombotic effect by inhibiting the expression of TF through the PI3K-Akt-NF-κB signaling pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The relations of variety and quantity of dietary proteins intake from different sources with mortality risk were still controversial. We aimed to examine the associations of variety and quantity of different sourced proteins with all-cause mortality risk in adults and older adults. Materials and Methods: 17,310 participants (mean age was 44.0 [SD: 15.9] years and 51.0% were females) with utilizable data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey were included. Dietary intake was collected using three consecutive 24-h dietary recalls combined with a household food inventory. The variety score of protein sources was defined as the number of proteins consumed at the appropriate level, accounting for both types and quantity of proteins. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Results: Over a median follow-up of 9.0 years, 1324 (7.6%) death cases were reported. There were reversed J-shaped relationships of percentages energy from total protein, and protein from legume with all-cause mortality; U-shaped relationships of proteins from unprocessed red meat, processed red meat, poultry and whole grain with all-cause mortality; L-shaped relationships of proteins from egg and fish with all-cause mortality; and a reversed L-shaped relationship of protein from refined grain with all-cause mortality (all P values for nonlinearity< 0.001). Moreover, there was a significant inverse association between the variety score of protein sources with overall mortality risk (per score increment, HR, 0.69; 95%CI, 0.66–0.72). Conclusions: Greater variety of proteins with appropriate quantity from different food sources was associated with significantly lower risk of mortality in Chinese adults and older adults. Background: Understanding changes in aggressive behaviour throughout child development is crucial for identifying effective intervention strategies. This study investigates children's aggressive behaviour in a longitudinal cohort and explores the role of environmental tobacco exposure and fish consumption as potential risk and protective factors, respectively, for persistent aggression in children., Methods: This study involved 452 children from the Chinese Jintan Cohort. Aggressive behaviour was assessed at ages 6 and 12 years using the child behaviour checklist (CBCL) and the Reactive-Proactive Aggression Questionnaire (RPQ), respectively. Information on lifestyle habits and living environment, including parental smoking, was collected via questionnaires. Linear regression was employed to investigate the association between childhood and adolescence aggressive behaviour with relevant covariates adjusted. Subsequently, we conducted interaction analyses to explore the moderating effects of parent smoking and fish consumption on the association., Results: We identified no significant association between childhood and adolescent aggression in the entire sample. Interaction analysis revealed environmental tobacco exposure as a moderator for the association. Specifically, persistent reactive and total aggression across development was only observed among those with environmental tobacco exposure (reactive: β = 0.549, p = 0.020; total: β = 0.654, p = 0.035). Furthermore, within the parent smoking subgroup, freshwater fish consumption at the age of 12 showed a marginally significant interaction with childhood aggression (reactive: p = 0.061; total: p = 0.095). A significant longitudinal association for aggression was found only among those consuming fish less frequently at the age of 12 years (reactive: β = 0.927, p = 0.002; total: β = 1.082, p = 0.006)., Conclusion: Our findings suggest exposure to environmental tobacco as a contributing factor to the lasting presence of aggressive behaviour during children's development, whereas freshwater fish consumption shows potential protective effects., (© 2025 The Author(s). Fish migration patterns are driven by hydrodynamic factors, which are essential in aquatic ecology. This study investigated the hydrodynamic drivers of Gymnocypris przewalskii fish migration in two distinct river reaches-a straight reach (SR) and a confluence reach (CR)- in the area of Qinghai Lake, China, using a 3D numerical model, fish density field data, and four predictive models. Thirteen hydrodynamic factors, with a focus on water depth and velocity, were analyzed to identify their influence on fish migration. It was found that in the SR, linear factors of flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy were most influential, while in the CR, nonlinear factors of water temperature and vortex intensity dominated. For CR, fish migration patterns are also important nonlinear factors. Methods that accurately reveal fish migration patterns, such as Random Forest, offer higher precision for habitat assessment. Our research also shows that fish swimming ability can, to some extent, reflect migration direction. Combining fish swimming ability with traditional linear habitat assessment methods can improve the adaptability of these methods in complex fluvial system. Based on our research findings, we propose a new workflow for fish habitat assessment that integrates both linear and nonlinear predictive methods. Objective: The relationship between fish consumption and stroke is inconsistent, and it is uncertain whether this association varies across predicted stroke risks., Methods: A cohort study comprising 95,800 participants from the Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China project was conducted. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect data on fish consumption. Participants were stratified into low- and moderate-to-high-risk categories based on their 10-year stroke risk prediction scores. Hazard ratios ( HRs ) and 95% confidence intervals ( CIs ) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard models and additive interaction by relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion (AP), and synergy index (SI)., Results: During 703,869 person-years of follow-up, 2,773 incident stroke events were identified. Higher fish consumption was associated with a lower risk of stroke, particularly among moderate-to-high-risk individuals ( HR = 0.53, 95% CI : 0.47-0.60) than among low-risk individuals ( HR = 0.64, 95% CI : 0.49-0.85). Wind farms (WFs) have grown significantly in recent years, especially in the offshore. However, their construction can adversely affect marine life and expose species to microplastics (MPs) pollution, posing a threat to human health through seafood consumption. In order to further understand the impact of WF construction activities on swimming animal resources and the accumulation of MPs ingested by dominant economic species occupying significant ecological niches, this study investigated changes in swimming animal resources over six periods during three years of WF construction in the South Yellow Sea and evaluated MPs ingestion in three economically valuable dominant species (Portunus trituberculatus, Collichthys lucidus, and Coilia nasus) before and after construction. The study found that the most significant negative impacts on swimming animal resources occurred during the early construction stages, with recovery observed as construction finished. By the operational phase in autumn 2021, all indicators had exceeded pre-construction levels from spring 2019, except for biomass, which had not fully recovered. MPs were identified in every biological sample, and the MPs contamination in the gills was higher than that in the gut and skin tissues. The average abundance of MPs and the overall MPs hazard index of the three organisms were higher than those in other areas and pre-construction levels. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution and high suspended sediment (SS) contents are significant anthropogenic and natural stressors that threaten aquatic biodiversity. However, the characteristics of multitrophic biological communities and their co-occurrence patterns in response to PAHs in sediment-laden rivers remain unclear. This study investigated the spatial distribution of species across three trophic levels, including algae, metazoan, and fish, in the Beiluo River on the Loess Plateau, China, using environmental DNA metabarcoding. Biodiversity was assessed in relation to 16 PAHs, SS, and environmental variables. The PAH in the dissolved phase ranged from 19.70 to 1613.30 ng/L dominated by low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) revealed a negative correlation between PAH distribution and SS in the river. In terms of biodiversity, the richness and Shannon index of algae (Chlorophyta and Dinophyceae) were positively associated with acenaphthene (ACE) levels. Conversely, the Shannon index and richness of metazoans (Rotifera and Arthropoda) appeared to decline in response to Benzo[a]anthracene (BaA) and pyrene (PYR). Fishes (Cypriniformes and Clupeiformes) demonstrated greater tolerance to PAH contamination than algae and metazoans, and their reduced richness and Shannon index were linked to the high SS loads (> 0.45 μm). High dam discharge can lead to total dissolved gas (TDG) supersaturation in downstream rivers, causing fish to suffer from bubble trauma and even mortality. Focusing on the Datengxia hydropower station in the Xijiang River basin, we conducted in-situ experiments to explore the tolerance patterns of economic fish species, including Ctenopharyngodon idella, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, and Cirrhinus molitorella, under the influence of TDG supersaturation at different compensation depths. Moreover, the development and recovery patterns of bubble trauma and the swimming ability of fish exposed to TDG supersaturated water were investigated. In-situ experiments showed that TDG supersaturation ranged from 112.2 % to 125.2 %, averaging 118.3 % at the experiment site. The results revealed that compensation depth is favorable in fish avoidance of TDG supersaturation. The survival rate of the experimental fish at the surface was lower than for those at the 0-3 m water depth. The survival rates of Ctenopharyngodon idella, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, and Cirrhinus molitorella at the surface were only 30 %, 47.5 %, and 70 %, respectively, while at the 0-3 m water depth, the survival rates were 97.5 %, 87.5 %, and 87.5 %, respectively. Additionally, the survival rate of fish was related to their preferred water depth. The bubble trauma scores of the experimental fish in TDG supersaturated water significantly increased with exposure time and significantly decreased after recovery in freshwater. Climate change has significantly altered fish population dynamics and marine ecosystems worldwide, resulting in multiple ecological, economic and social risks for sustainable fisheries. As a hotspot of global warming, China is anticipated to face with extensive climate-driven changes in marine fisheries and ecosystems, but a clear and adaptative management strategy has not been established. In this study, we assessed the climate adaptiveness of current fisheries management and alternative strategies with diverse management priorities. Dynamic ecosystem model, Ecosim, was used to quantify the effectiveness of these management options in mitigating ecological, social, and economic risks of climate change, as well as the potential trade-offs. Results showed that under the status quo fisheries management, climate warming would dramatically impair ecosystem structure and function, leading to declines in fishery yields, economic losses in the fishing industry, and potential food security crises. However, these climate-driven risks could be mitigated, or at least minimized, through improved fisheries management. The harvest control rule (HCR) strategy, which responds to climate-induced biomass variations, would be most effective in promoting sustainable fisheries production but limited in offsetting climate-driven economic losses; while multispecies strategies can, in a balanced way, help mitigate climate change impacts on sustainable fishery production, ecosystem health, seafood security, and economic profitability. Furthermore, their capability to offset climate-driven risks would be largely compromised with increasing greenhouse emissions, as no management strategy could sustain current ecological, economic and social levels of fisheries under the high-emission scenario. We emphasize the need to pursue a dual approach that incorporates both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and taking adaptive fisheries management strategies to realize fisheries potential and ensure ecological and socio-economic resilience. Water diversions can mitigate water scarcities by strategically reallocating water resources. Despite their benefits, these interventions may profoundly affect biodiversity and multiple ecological functions ("multifunctionality") within highly managed lake systems. However, the specific impact of such interventions on the relationship between biodiversity and multifunctionality remains elusive, which limits our grasp of how water regulation shapes the dynamics of managed lake ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the differences in biodiversity and ecological functions between periods with and without water regulation in a highly managed lake, and extended this analysis by calculating diversity and multi-diversity indices and assessing the ecosystem's multifunctionality, with the goal of improving our understanding of how water regulation affects the ecological integrity of such lakes. We found that the diversity and multi-diversity indices both decreased markedly during the regulation period, indicating a negative impact on biodiversity. Conversely, multifunctionality remained stable. To clarify these responses, we developed linear mixed-effects models that incorporated multi-diversity indices and multifunctionality. Our analysis uncovered a robust positive correlation between multi-richness and multifunctionality. However, this relationship weakened during the periods with water regulation. Finally, we established structural equation models based on trophic cascade theory to pinpoint the key biological groups that sustained multifunctionality. We found that plants and omnivorous fish were instrumental in supporting multifunctionality during the non-regulation period, whereas planktivorous fish played a crucial role during the regulation period. Marine habitats and ecosystems are increasingly being impacted by global climate change and the global spread of captive breeding. In this study, we focused on five typical Trachinotus species (Trachinotus anak, Trachinotus blochii, Trachinotus mookalee, Trachinotus goreenisi, Trachinotus ovatus) as research subjects. We utilized species distribution models and ecological niche models to predict the present and future potential distribution of these species, as well as to assess ecological niche overlap and evaluate the early warning of invasion by Trachinotus species. T. ovatus stands out with its broad distribution range and high adaptability to different environments. It occupies 1.114% of medium-high suitable areas, spanning 100,147 km 2 . Our predictions also suggest that T. ovatus would undergo a significant expansion (approximately 55% of the total area) under both past and future environmental scenarios, demonstrating a higher tolerance and adaptability to changes in ambient temperatures. It can be discerned that T. ovatus exhibits strong environmental adaptability, which may potentially lead to biological invasion along the southeastern coast of China. The T. anak, on the other hand, showed a higher expansion trend under high carbon dioxide concentrations (RCP8.5), indicating a certain convergence with carbon dioxide concentration. Our models showed that under future climatic conditions, T. ovatus would become the dominant species, with increased competition with T. mookalee and decreased competition with T. goreenisi, T. mookalee, and T. anak. Based on our findings and the net-pen culture mode of T. ovatus, we identified the hotspot habitat of T. ovatus to be located in the Indo-Pacific convergence zone. However, there is a possibility of an expansion trend towards the southeast coast of China in the future. Artificial emergency water source lakes have been built in most cities in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China, to ensure water safety for residents. However, these new ecosystems are prone to algal blooms or other degraded water quality conditions. A newly built water supply lake in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River was selected as a model system to test whether the coordinated manipulation of fish and submerged macrophyte communities could enhance ecosystem function and quality. The coordinated manipulations spanned a five-year period, aiming to enhance both top-down and bottom-up control of phytoplankton. As a result of these manipulations, the catch per unit effort of small-bodied zooplanktivorous fishes decreased by >95 % from year two and remained low. The coverage and biomass of submerged macrophytes increased year by year. Water transparency increased from 1.07 to 3.33 m. Total phosphorus and total nitrogen showed a decreasing trend (not significant though). The annual mean biomass of Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta decreased from 2.99 to 0.03 mg/L, 3.90 to 0.16 mg/L, and 3.50 to 0.3 mg/L, respectively. The biomass of phytoplankton in different groups decreased in all four seasons. The annual mean biomass of Cladocera and Copepoda remained low. The biomass of Cladocera and Copepoda decreased in summer, fall, and winter. The Ecosystem Health Index - increased from 15.9 to 32.0. The pros and cons of the various top-down and bottom-up control measures employed are discussed. Coral reefs possess extremely high ecological value in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Microplastics as emerging and pervasive pollutants pose a great threat to the health of coral ecosystems. However, in situ studies on microplastics pollution and its impacts in coral ecosystems globally are limited. The occurrence characteristics of microplastics in the environment mediums and reef-dwelling organisms were investigated in coral reef areas from the southern Hainan Island, and the impacts of microplastics on corals in situ were evaluated in this study. Average microplastics abundance was 9.48 items L -1 in seawater, 190.00 items kg -1 in sediment, 0.36 items g -1 in coral, 1.50 items g -1 in shellfish, 0.48 items g -1 in fish gill, and 1.71 items g -1 in fish gastrointestinal tract. The prevalent microplastics in the above samples were characterized as being less than 1000 µm in size, fibrous, and transparent, with predominant polymer types as polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polyethylene, and rayon. The microplastic enrichment capacity of different corals varied (Pocillopora > Acropora > Sinularia). Notably, microplastics were more abundant on the surface of corals compared to their interiors, with distinct characteristics observed, including larger-sized (>500 µm) and fiber-shaped polyethylene terephthalate microplastics on the surface and smaller-sized (20-200 µm) fragmented polyethylene microplastics within coral interiors. Furthermore, the investigation showed species-specific impacts of microplastics on corals in situ, including photosynthetic activity of photosymbionts and antioxidant and immune activities of corals. Furthermore, the ecological risks of microplastics were minor across most environmental media in the studied areas, with exceptions in the bottom seawater and surface sediment of YLW, which exhibited extreme and medium risk levels, respectively. Coral risk levels were generally medium, except for dangerous levels in DDH and high levels in LHT. Microplastics can act as vectors of chemical contaminants in aquatic environments, but the extent to which this phenomenon contributes to chemical exposure in marine organisms remains poorly understood. We investigated the occurrence of microplastics and emerging contaminants (ECs), including antibiotics and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in 14 marine fish species. Microplastics were detected in all marine fish species, mainly in the gastrointestinal tract. Fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines were the dominant antibiotics in fish muscles with maximum concentrations of 24.84 and 26.95 ng g -1 ww, while perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS, 0.039-0.95 ng g -1 ww) was the dominant component in the PFAS profile. Fish with more microplastics had significantly higher concentrations of fluoroquinolones and perfluoroalkyl acids than fish with less microplastics (p < 0.05), but the correlation was not observed in other chemicals. Structural equation modeling revealed the contribution of microplastics in fish on the level of ECs contamination. The health quotient value indicated the low health risk of single compounds via fish consumption to humans; however, the combined risk of microplastics and ECs still needs to be considered. Microplastics are pervasive throughout aquatic ecological communities. While their negative impacts on the life history traits of aquatic species are well studied, the effects on community dynamics remain elusive. Consequently, community-level assessments of microplastic effects on marine food webs are largely lacking, creating significant knowledge gaps regarding marine ecosystem structure and dynamics in the context of microplastic contamination. Here we expand a multispecies size-spectrum model by incorporating microplastic impacts on individual life-history traits, ultimately allowing us to study microplastic-mediated structural and functional changes in fish communities. As expected, microplastic ingestion may drive species extinction, but the microplastic-to-food ratio threshold for extinction is species-specific, and not necessarily correlated with species' asymptotic weights. Interestingly, species responses to microplastics also propagate through the community as ingestion triggers both bottom-up and top-down effects on community dynamics. Which specific type of cascading effect is dominating depends on which species is ingesting microplastics as well as its trophic role in the community. Generally, low-trophic-level species ingesting microplastics can exert large detrimental effects on community biomass. This study aimed to examine the distribution of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in 15 marine fish species from the northern Bohai Sea, investigate their sources of contamination, and evaluate the benefits-risks associated with the concurrent consumption of fish fatty acids and PFAS. The ∑PFAS concentrations in fish ranged from 9.38 to 262.92 ng·g -1 (dry weight). The highest PFAS levels were found in the viscera and gills, while the lowest levels were found in the muscles. Industrial effluents and sewage treatment plant discharges were the primary sources of PFAS contamination. The individual PFAS concentrations in fish were insignificantly correlated with their trophic levels (p > 0.05). However, the concentrations of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) or long-chain PFAS (C > 8) significantly increased with fish size (e.g., total length, weight) and lipid content (p < 0.001). The benefit-risk analysis suggests that HPFO-DA poses a higher health risk than perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in fish (p < 0.05). Long-term consumption of contaminated fish may significantly increase human serum PFOA concentration and kidney cancer risk (p < 0.05). Low-head dams and small hydropower developments are widely distributed in global rivers because of their high cost-efficiency and smooth implementation. However, these installations have great ecological impacts on native fish communities due to the loss of longitudinal river connectivity. Although dam removal and fishway construction are effective measures to mitigate river fragmentation, research on their effects on fish communities remains limited to date. In this study, we investigated fish community dynamics in a mountainous tributary of the Jinsha River-Heishui River following dam removal, fishway construction, and fishway renovation. Our fish sampling data from 2018 to 2023 yielded 6137 fish belonging to 25 species, 12 families, and 3 orders. The native fish community predominantly represented the typical fish fauna of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, primarily including the genus Schizothorax and the families Sisoridae and Nemacheilidae. Representative fish species in the Heishui River demonstrate notable adaptations to cold water, high altitude, and rapid flow environments. After removing the Laomuhe Dam, upstream fish abundance increased sharply, but species richness slightly decreased in the short term. Fishway construction significantly enhanced species richness and abundance and reduced the difference between the upstream and downstream fish communities from the Songxin Dam. However, the subsequent fishway renovation altered the dominance of fish species, with marginal changes in community structure and abundance. Variations in fish community dynamics in the river channel and fishway structure can be attributed to differences in ecological guilds (e.g., flow preference and thermal regime) and environmental factors (e.g., flow discharge, water temperature, and water depth). Fish seed is one of the primary input materials for the large-scale production in aquaculture industry. In this review, a systematic summary was firstly made on the artificial fish breeding, hatchery, and larval rearing using Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS). It is much easier to keep the environment much more convenient for the parent fish to mate and spawn in the RAS, compared with traditional. Specifically, the flounder, grouper, and butterfish can successfully lay spawn in the RAS. Among them, the previous studies reported the culture density of 0.01-4.5 kg/m3, system recirculation rate of 9-76%/h, and water discharged 0.7-3%/day. In terms of the fish eggs hatching, three kinds of incubator were mainly used for the different kind of eggs. Mcdonald-type hatching jar was used for the trout, sturgeon, and seabass, all of which eggs were suspended in water. California-type incubation troughs and vertical incubators were mainly used for the salmon and catfish, of which eggs were be stationary. Similar to the Mcdonald-type hatching jar, the funnel type incubators were used for the fresh water fish, such as the big head, grass, and koi carp. Furthermore, the different requirements of the system to grow out have been summarized to evaluate the influence of the live feed, microorganism, tank size, and light condition on the fish larval rearing. Secondly, the overview has been provided for the fish breeding and seed production in China. The current large-scale artificial fish breeding and seed production were practiced either in the outdoor ponds, net cages or the flow through various systems. Most of the seed production facilities were outdated, where the control of water quality was depended only on the climate and water resources. More importantly, the production efficiency and quality of fish seed were much lower and unstable at present, leading to the less development of aquaculture. Therefore, it is very necessary to upgrade the fish breeding and seed production technology. Recirculating aquaculture can be a promising kind of land-based industrialized aquaculture, due mainly to the high production, high efficiency, strong reproducibility, and environment friendly. Because of the high controllable water quality, recirculating aquaculture can fully meet the harsh requirements for the fish breeding and seed production. Hence, a plenty of practices on the fish breeding and seed production using RAS have been carried out with the different species all over the world. Thirdly, three research fields can be developed to promote the practice of RAS in the fish breeding and seed production in the future. 1) It is essential for the biological response of parent fish, eggs, and larval to the RAS environment stressors in the system design and seed production. 2) The control technology of environment and water quality can be developed in the scientific system configuration for different fish species. 3) The corresponding intelligent equipment can also developed during this time, such as, the screening for the parent fish using the computer vision, automatic counting for the eggs and larval, as well as the smart feeder for the live food. Preterm birth is the leading cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. Some prospective cohort studies suggested that fish and shellfish consumption may affect the incidence of preterm birth. However, conflicting evidence exists on the relationship between fish and shellfish consumption and preterm birth. A total of 10 179 women from Gansu province were interviewed after delivery to collect information on their past intake of fish and shellfish using FFQ. Logistic regression models were used to estimate OR and 95 % CI to examine the association between fish and shellfish consumption and preterm birth and its clinical subtypes. Fish and shellfish consumption was associated with reduced risk of preterm birth (OR = 0·65, 95 % CI 0·56, 0·77). Increasing frequency of fish and shellfish consumption, compared with no fish and shellfish consumption, was associated with decreasing odds of preterm birth. Besides, increasing weekly total amount of fish and shellfish consumption, compared with no fish and shellfish consumption, was also associated with decreasing odds of preterm birth. Significant trend effect was also seen between fish and shellfish consumption and very preterm birth (Pfor trend = 0·001) and spontaneous preterm birth (Pfor trend = 0·003). Interaction was observed between total fish and shellfish consumption with maternal age (Pfor interaction = 0·041) and pre-pregnancy BMI underweight (Pfor interaction = 0·012). Our findings showed that maternal fish and shellfish consumption was associated with lower incidence of preterm birth.We recommend for the national guideline of ≥350 g/week of fish and shellfish consumption among pregnant women. Background: Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs) are enzymes responsible for attaching amino acids to tRNA, which enables protein synthesis. Mutations in isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase (IARS1) have recently been reported to be a genetic cause for growth retardation, intellectual disability, muscular hypotonia, and infantile hepatopathy (GRIDHH).Case Presentation: In this study, we reported an additional case of compound heterozygous missense variations c.701 T > C (p.L234P) and c.1555C > T (p.R519C) in IARS1, which were identified using medical exome sequencing; c.701 T > C (p.L234P) was a novel variant, and c.1555C > T (p.R519C) was found in GnomAD. Unlike other reported patients, this individual presented prominently with recurrent liver failure, which led to her death at an early age of 19 months. She also had significant growth retardation, muscular hypotonia, chubby and flabby face, recurrent loose stools, and abnormal brain computed tomography (CT), while zinc deficiency and hearing loss were not present. Studies in zebrafish embryo modeling recapitulated some of the key phenotypic traits in embryo development, neurodevelopment, liver development, and myogenesis, demonstrating that these variations caused a loss of gene function in IARS1.Conclusions: We have found a novel mutation point c.701 T > C (p.L234P) in IARS1. In this study, the length-weight relationships were determined for four fish species of the upper Yangtze River, Sichuan province, China. The fish were collected by drift net (mesh size: 4 cm × 4 cm) and ground bamboo cages (1 cm × 1 cm) from Yalong River, Laixi River, Pingtung River, and Baoxing River. Samples were collected from March 2017 to December 2022. According to the length-weight function equation (W = a L b ), r2 values ranged from 0.960 to 0.991 and the b values of LWRs ranged from 2.916 (Megalobrama pellegrini) to 3.095 (Claea dabryi). Background: Alcoholism is a well-known risk factor for liver injury and is one of the major causes of hepatic steatosis worldwide. Although many drugs have been reported to have protective effects against acute alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity, there is limited available treatment for alcoholic liver disease (ALD), indicating an urgent need for effective therapeutic options. Herein, we first reported the protective effects of magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate (MgIG) on acute alcohol-induced hepatic steatosis and its related mechanisms in a zebrafish model. Methods: Alcohol was administered directly to embryo medium at 5 days post-fertilization (dpf) for up to 32 h. MgIG was given to the larvae 2 h before the administration of alcohol and then cotreated with alcohol starting at 5 dpf. Oil red O staining was used to determine the incidence of steatosis, and pathological features of the liver were assessed by hematoxylin–eosin staining. Biological indexes, total cholesterol (TC) and triacylglycerol (TG) were detected in the livers of zebrafish larvae. Morphological changes in the livers of zebrafish larvae were observed using liver-specific EGFP transgenic zebrafish (Tg(lfabp10a:eGFP)). The expression levels of critical molecules related to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and lipid metabolism were detected by qRT–PCR, whole-mount in situ hybridization and western blotting. Results: Alcohol-treated larvae developed hepatomegaly and steatosis after 32 h of exposure. We found that MgIG improved hepatomegaly and reduced the incidence of steatosis in a dose-dependent manner by oil red O staining and diminished deposits of alcohol-induced fat droplets by histologic analysis. Moreover, MgIG significantly decreased the levels of TC and TG in the livers of zebrafish larvae. Furthermore, the expression levels of critical genes involved in ER stress (atf6, irela, bip, chop) and the key enzymes regulating lipid metabolism (acc1, fasn, hmgcs1 and hmgcra) were significantly higher in the alcohol-treated group than in the control group. However, in the MgIG plus alcohol-treated group, the expression of these genes was markedly decreased compared with that in the alcohol-treated group. Whole-mount in situ hybridization and western blotting also showed that MgIG had an effect on the expression levels of critical genes and proteins involved in lipid metabolism and ER stress. Our results revealed that MgIG could markedly regulate these genes and protect the liver from ER stress and lipid metabolism disorders. Conclusions: Our study is the first to demonstrate that MgIG could protect the liver from acute alcohol stimulation by ameliorating the disorder of lipid metabolism and regulating ER stress in zebrafish larvae. Background: The local Dong people in Qiandongnan Prefecture, Guizhou Province, China, with rich biocultural diversity, have developed the traditional rice-duckweed-fish-duck agroecosystem (RDFDA) to support biodiversity conservation and to meet food and cultural needs. However, there is still not much research on traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) in this area. In particular, there is a lack of traditional knowledge of edible plants used by the Dong people as flavoring to grill fish (Cyprinus carpio) collected from RDFDA, which is extremely valuable in their traditional culture. The study focused on documenting plant species used in grilling fish and analyzing the status of its TEK. Methods: Twenty-one sampling points of three Dong minority villages in Qiandongnan were selected for the research. The local TEK associated with plant resources for fish-grilling was recorded through free listing and semi-structured interviews. Fidelity level (FL) and ethnoecological importance value (EIV) indicators were designed to determine the socioeconomic influence of TEK. The non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) method was used to evaluate the differentiation of edible plant species distribution in dissimilar accessibility types. Results: A total of 430 people were interviewed about grilled fish, of whom 75% were men and 85% were farmers. Thirty-four edible plants were documented for fish-grilling in three Dong villages. They belong to 16 plant families, such as Apiaceae, and Asteraceae. The life forms included herbaceous (76%), shrubs (18%) and trees (6%). Leaves are the most commonly used part of for grilling fish, followed by aerial parts, and whole plants. Among these edible plants, Allium hookeri, A. macrostemon and Houttuynia cordata with the highest fidelity level (100%) were cited as edible plants for grilling fish by all informants. The NMDS showed different accessibility types of collection sites, with different importance values. Paddy rice field edge (2.03) has the highest value, followed by forest-farming ecotone (1.74), streamsides (1.71) and woodland (0.48). Conclusion: The purpose of this study was to investigate the traditional knowledge of edible plant materials used by the Dong people for grilling fish. The results demonstrate the strong connection between local people, the bio-environment and agroecosystem services. Restoration measures have been widely implemented in wetland ecosystems globally to bend the curve of biodiversity loss and restore associated ecological functions. However, assessments of the effectiveness of wetland restoration have predominantly focused on the recovery of taxonomic composition, while few studies have assessed the effectiveness of these efforts from a food web perspective. Here, we incorporated stable isotope approach to investigate trophic structure in natural and restored wetlands in Northeast China. The investigated consumers, including zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, and fish, exhibited lower δ 15 N and higher δ 13 C values in restored wetlands than in natural wetlands. Natural wetlands exhibited higher trophic positions and a wider range of trophic levels compared to restored wetlands. Primary consumers in natural wetlands relied more on particulate organic matter (POM, 42.9 % ± 24.1 %), while those in restored wetlands were more dependent on substrate organic matter (SOM, 42.3 % ± 23.9 %). Compared to natural wetlands, isotopic richness was significantly lower in restored wetlands, with smaller isotopic variation (SEAs) in basal resources, aquatic invertebrates, and fish. Our findings reveal that the recovery of trophic structures in restored wetlands lags behind that of taxonomic composition. Future restoration efforts should prioritize enhancing habitat heterogeneity and resource availability to support a diverse range of trophic levels. Aeromonas veronii has emerged as a significant pathogen that impacts both fish and mammals. Recently, an infectious disease characterized by multiple ulcers on the body surface with a high mortality rate occurred in Channa argus cultured in Jiangsu Province, China. A Gram-negative bacterial strain (Aer12) was isolated from the body surface of the diseased fish and identified as A. veronii by the physiological, biochemical, and 16 S rRNA gene analysis. Intra-peritoneal injection of Aer12 into the healthy C. argus resulted in the development of multiple ulcers on the body surface, and the histopathological results showed that muscle tissue rupture was the most severe symptom. Aer12 showed both protease and lipase activities with no β-hemolytic activity. Furthermore, Aer12 contained seven virulence genes (aer, act, alt, fla, ascV, aexT, and ela) and one antibiotic resistance gene (qnrS) identified by the PCR assay. The results of whole genome sequencing revealed that Aer12 had a circular chromosome that measured 4,719,428 bp. It comprised 4301 predicted protein-coding sequences (CDS) in addition to 31 rRNA, 124 tRNA, and 49 sRNA genes. Furthermore, a total of 676 virulence genes and 216 antibiotic resistance genes have been predicted. Aer12 was susceptible to 21 antibiotics, including ampicillin and erythromycin. The results of Chinese herbs susceptibility assay showed that Aer12 was highly susceptible to Sanguisorba officinalis, Galla chinensis, and Schisandra chinensis. With global climate change and increased overfishing, the sustainable development of marine fisheries economies faces many challenges. This study evaluates the resilience of the marine fishery system in China's coastal areas in a systematic, scientific, and comprehensive manner by establishing the ANP-EWM-TOPSIS comprehensive evaluation system, analyzing the temporal and spatial changes in the economic resilience of marine fisheries, and exploring the main obstacles affecting resilience. The results show that the fishery system in Chinese marine regions demonstrates significant resilience both temporally and spatially. From the analysis of temporal and spatial variations, the economic resilience of marine fisheries in Fujian and Shandong provinces is relatively high and shows a clear upward trend, while the changes in economic resilience of marine fisheries in Tianjin and Shanghai are not significant. Regarding obstacle factors, the dimensions of resistance and innovation exhibit relatively high levels of obstacles. The widespread existence and persistence of antibiotics in the aquatic environment, and their extensive ecological risks, have attracted considerable attention. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and distribution of 25 antibiotics in environmental and biological samples from Poyang Lake Basin in China. SPE-HPLC-MS/MS was used to quantify the concentrations in different matrices. The total concentrations ranged from 144 to 933 ng/L in the water and 346 to 1154 ng/g in the sediment. In the spatial distribution analysis of this basin, the concentrations in the Ganjiang River were generally higher than those in Poyang Lake. The seasonal distribution in the wet and dry seasons showed comparatively higher concentrations during the dry season than the wet season. Additionally, antibiotics were found in various hydrophytes and animals, and the bioconcentration factor values followed the order: emergent plants > floating plants > submerged plants and benthic organisms > ducks > fish. Moreover, correlations among different matrices showed that antibiotics in viviparid snails were significantly positively correlated with those in ducks, and negatively correlated with those in carps, indicating the transmission relationship through the food chain. The consumption of contaminated aquatic products may expose humans to residues of parabens, triclosan (TCS), and triclocarban (TCC). Despite its significance, empirical research on this issue remains limited. In this study, we employed high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) to analyze extracts from 245 aquatic product samples collected randomly from local markets in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. Our analysis detected at least one of the five parabens-methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (MeP), ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (EtP), propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (PrP), butyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (BuP), and benzyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (BeP)-in 88 samples (35.9%). TCS and TCC were found in 50.6% and 51.4% of the samples, respectively, with MeP being the most frequently detected paraben. Significant negative correlations were observed between TCS and MeP (r = -0.129, p < 0.05) and between TCC and MeP (r = -0.176, p < 0.05), indicating potential different sources for these contaminants. Residue levels varied among different types of aquatic products, with TCS and TCC concentrations being higher in fish compared to crustaceans and bivalves. The health risk associated with consuming these contaminants was found to be minimal for both males and females. Jellyfish play an important role in the material cycling and energy flow of food webs, and massive aggregations may have deleterious consequences for local fisheries; yet a theoretical framework of the trophic effects of jellyfish blooms on coastal fisheries is unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we assessed the trophic interactions between cooccurring bloom jellyfish and dominant fish groups (omnivorous fish and piscivorous fish) in the coastal waters of China (CWC) via stable isotope analysis; we subsequently discussed how jellyfish blooms may affect energy flow through coastal ecosystems. Our results indicate a considerable degree of trophic overlap (mean ratio > 65 %) between jellyfish and small omnivorous fish (< 10 cm), highlighting a similarity in feeding habits, while the overlap ratio decreased to <55 % of the large omnivorous fish group (> 10 cm). Relatively higher trophic levels and smaller overlaps of large omnivorous fish were found in the ecosystem with high jellyfish biomass, which suggested that they may reinforce the ontogenetic trophic shift pattern to alleviate the potential for resource competition with jellyfish under conditions of jellyfish explosion. The smallest trophic overlap (< 20 %) highlighted the strong trophic differentiation between jellyfish and piscivorous fish. Additionally, our study suggested that a massive aggregation of jellyfish can negatively influence zooplankton but may not transfer energy further up efficiently, implying a weak trophic coupling between jellyfish and upper-trophic levels in CWC ecosystems. Thus, we speculate that jellyfish play an important role in shaping pathways involved in the energy transfer of food webs and that large blooms may negatively affect fisheries through bottom-up control affecting prey availability. In general, these results hold strong potential to further improve the understanding of the trophic interactions between jellyfish and fish populations. The distribution, composition, and risk assessment of 8 EDCs in the surface water of 14 national aquatic germplasm resource reserves (freshwater) were investigated during dry and wet seasons. Bisphenol A (BPA), nonylphenol (NP), and octylphenol (OP) were the main contributors of the 8 EDCs. The concentrations of phenolic pollutants in surface water during the dry season were higher than those in the wet season. However, no significant seasonal differences were found among the steroid hormones. According to the evaluation of estrogenic activity (EEQ > 1.0), E2 and EE2 were the main contributors to estrogenic activity. EDC mixtures posed a higher risk to crustaceans and fish (RQ > 1.0) and a moderate to high risk to algae (RQ > 0.1). Fish were the most sensitive aquatic organisms. In the study areas, EE2, E1, BPA, NP, and E2 had a higher risk than the other three compounds and should be controlled as a priority.

Shanghai's extensive coastline and offshore marine areas feature diverse ecosystems. This study aimed to determine the current status, spatial distribution, and total capacity of marine carbon storage in Shanghai. Surveys were conducted on oyster reefs, phytoplankton, and fish populations from August to November 2022, with samples collected to quantify biomass and carbon content. The carbon storage of oyster reefs, phytoplankton, and fish was found to be 2.045 × 10 5 tC, 5113.19 kgC, and 56.6014 tC, respectively. The spatial distributions exhibited significant heterogeneity, influenced by substrate type, nutrient concentrations, and fishing activities. The total marine carbon storage capacity in Shanghai's offshore waters was estimated at 2.045 × 10 5 tC, highlighting a pathway for achieving regional carbon neutrality goals. This study enriches baseline data, elucidates carbon sequestration functions and spatial patterns, and provides scientific support for marine ecological protection and blue carbon resource utilization. Coastal bays serve as undeniable dissolved organic matter (DOM) reactors and the role of prevalent mariculture in DOM cycling deserves investigation. This study, based on four seasonal field samplings and a laboratory incubation experiment, examined the source and seasonal dynamics of DOM and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) in the seawater of fish (Larimichthys crocea, LC), seaweed (Gracilaria lemaneiformis, GL) and abalone (Haliotis sp., HA) culturing zones in Sansha Bay, China. Using three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis (EEMs-PARAFAC), three fluorescent components were identified, i.e. protein-like C1, protein-like C2, and humic-like C3. Our results showed that mariculture activities dominated the DOM pool by seasonal generating abundant DOM with lower aromaticity and humification degrees. Accounting for 40-95 % of total fluorescent components, C1 (Ex/Em = 300/340 nm) was regarded the same as D1 (Ex/Em = 300/335 nm) identified in a 180-day degradation experiments of G. lemaneiformis detritus, indicating that the cultured seaweed modulated DOM through the seasonal production of C1. In addition, the incubation experiment revealed that 0.7 % of the total carbon content of seaweed detritus could be preserved as recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (RDOC). However, fish culture appeared to contribute to liable DOC and protein-like C2, exerting a substantial impact on DOM during winter but making a negligible contribution to carbon sequestration, while abalone culture might promote the potential export and sequestration of seaweed-derived carbon to the ocean. Our results highlight the influences of mariculture activities, especially seaweed culture, in shaping DOM pool in coastal bays. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their substitutes, novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), are ubiquitously present in the aquatic environment of electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling region, leading to their inevitable absorption and accumulation by aquatic organisms, which can be transferred to human via directly aquatic product consumption or through food chain, thereby posing potential health risks. This study focused on fish samples from Guiyu and its surrounding areas, and found the total PBDEs concentrations were 24-7400 ng/g lw (mean: 1800 ng/g lw) and the total NBFRs concentrations were 14 to 2300 ng/g lw (mean: 310 ng/g lw). Significant positive correlations were found among PBDE congeners, among different NBFRs, and between NBFRs and commercial PBDEs that they replace. ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs in the intestine were 620-350,000 and 91-81,000 ng/g lw (mean: 83000 and 12,000 ng/g lw, respectively), significantly exceeding those in the gills, where ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs were 14-37,000 and 39-45,000 ng/g lw (mean: 9200 and 2400 ng/g lw, respectively). The ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs showed no non-carcinogenic risks to the target population through dietary intake. Despite the significantly higher daily intake of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) compared to decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209), the non-carcinogenic risk associated with BDE209 remained higher than that of DBDPE. Mercury (Hg) emissions from Hg smelting (roasting HgS ores) and artisanal small-scale gold mining predominantly include elemental Hg, in either liquid [Hg(0) l ] or gaseous [Hg(0) g ] form. The oxidation of Hg(0) into Hg(I) is the first step during Hg(0) oxidation, which enables Hg to enter the food web. However, this oxidation process remains poorly understood, particularly in Hg(0) l /Hg(0) g -impacted environments. Herein, we show the widespread occurrence of Hg(I) in Hg(0) l /Hg(0) g -exposed environmental matrices near an abandoned Hg smelting plant in Xunyang, Shaanxi, China, including water, sediment, soil, plant, fish, and insect. This plant produced elemental Hg by roasting HgS ore, leaving Hg(0) l in the factory area after abandonment, which continuously released Hg(0) l /Hg(0) g into the surrounding environment. In Hg(0)-impacted water, Hg(I) was one of the primary Hg species, with an average concentration of 876 (not detected to 6109) ng L -1 and an average Hg(I) to total dissolved Hg ratio of 46% (0-92%), exhibiting a decrease with increasing distance from the plant. Elevated levels of Hg(I) were observed when the upstream sample was simultaneously exposed to Hg(0) l and Hg(0) g , arising from aqueous Hg(0) l oxidation and comproportionation between Hg(II) (mainly from Hg(0) l oxidation) and dissolved Hg(0) (i.e., Hg 2+ + Hg 0 → Hg 2 2+ ). Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in seawater and sediments may be amplified along the aquatic food chain, posing a health threat to humans. This study comprehensively analyzed the concentrations, distribution, potential sources, and health risk of 7 PTEs in multimedia (seawater, sediment and organism) in typical subtropical bays in southern China. The results indicated that Zn was the most abundant element in seawater, and the average concentration of Cd in sediment was 3.93 times higher than the background value. Except for As, the seasonal differences in surface seawater were not significant. The content of Zn in fishes, crustacea, and shellfish was the highest, while the contents of Hg and Cd were relatively low. Bioaccumulation factor indicated that Zn was a strongly bioaccumulated element in seawater, while Cd was more highly enriched by aquatic organisms in sediment. According to principal component analysis (PCA), and positive matrix factorization (PMF), the main sources of PTEs in Quanzhou Bay were of natural derivation, industrial sewage discharge, and agricultural inputs, each contributing 40.4 %, 24.2 %, and 35.4 %, respectively. Erhai Lake, a highland lake situated in Southwest China, provides critical aquatic protein sources for the local community, and its preservation is vital due to the sensitivity of alpine freshwater ecosystems to disturbance. However, there is a lack of research on the contamination status of methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic organisms of the Erhai Lake Basin. MeHg concentrations in important commercial fish species from the Erhai Lake were examined, and the potential health risks associated with human consumption were assessed. Our results showed significant inter-species differences in fish muscle MeHg: the carnivorous S. asotus exhibited the highest level (303 ng/g; ww), while that of the detritivorous R. ocellatus was the lowest (3.86 ng/g). Moreover, MeHg concentrations in P. fulvidraco and C. auratus collected from the Luoshi River (a major tributary of Erhai Lake) were significantly higher compared to those from the Erhai Lake, indicating possible river-based input of MeHg into the Erhai Lake. Additionally, our study revealed a significant positive correlation between the MeHg levels and the length as well as weight of the examined fish species. All the fish species analyzed in our study had MeHg concentrations within the limits of China's food safety standard. Nevertheless, a relatively low consumption quantity of 16 g per day of certain species (i.e., S. asotus) may still pose potential health risks especially for children. Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are legacy additive brominated flame retardant. In present study, the distribution, biomagnification and potential human health risk associated with HBCDs were investigated in six edible marine fish species collected from three bays in the Beibu Gulf, China, between March and October 2021. The concentration of HBCDs ranged from 0.05 to 200 ng/g lipid weight (lw), with Scoliodon laticaudus and Trichiurus nanhaiensis having the highest and lowest concentration, respectively. The α-HBCD was dominant in most studied fish, expect for Scoliodon laticaudus. Dietary source was the primary factor for the diastereomeric profiles of HBCDs in fish. Only γ-HBCD demonstrated trophic magnification in the studied fish species. The middle and lower reaches of the Jinsha River, which is the upper reach of the Yangtze River in China, play crucial roles in the water security of people living in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The construction of 11 dams in this region has significantly altered the aquatic environment. Although researchers have investigated the effects of cascade hydropower station development in the middle and lower reaches of the Jinsha River based on factors such as flow, sediment, and fish, the overall impact of this station on the aquatic environment remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to comprehensively investigate the effects of cascade hydropower station development on the aquatic environment based on three factors: river, aquatic organism, and ecosystem factors. In terms of river factors, the development of cascade hydropower stations increases runoff in the dry season and decreases it in the flood season, leading to sediment deposition and water temperature stratification in cascade reservoirs, and changes in water quality. In terms of aquatic organism factors, cascade hydropower development not only changes the species composition but also reduces biodiversity. Effects of ecosystem factors including the ecological flow, value, and landscape as well as sustainability are summarized, with results indicating positive and negative impacts on river ecosystems. Finally, recommendations for future research on the effects of cascade hydropower development on the aquatic environment of rivers are provided., (© 2024. Katingan River has been contaminated by mercury from ASGM activities since the early 2000s. This study aims to assess the risk of mercury exposure from Katingan fish consumption and analyze relationships between exposure variables. We proposed two risk assessment scenarios based on mercury analysis of 74 fish samples and fish consumption questionnaire. The risk assessment result revealed that estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of Scenario 2 were generally 3-4 times higher than Scenario 1. The statistical test results showed significant differences ( p  < 0.05) in EDI values between scenarios, indicating that variations in fish consumption influenced the mercury intake. Three different health reference-based values (HRVs) were applied in estimating the hazard quotient (HQ) and it influenced the HQ results ( p  < 0.05), for both scenarios. The relationship analysis between variables presented a strong non-linear correlation between EDI and hair mercury level for both scenarios, but a weak relationship between age and hair mercury level.
