Background: Despite the efficacy of efgartigimod demonstrated in ADAPT phase 3 trial, data specifically derived from Chinese participants are not available. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of efgartigimod in Chinese patients with generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG). Methods: This is a prospective cohort study conducted in 8 hospitals across China. gMG patients received weekly intravenous infusions of efgartigimod (10  mg/kg) under a named patient program (NPP). The present study is an 8-week study, consisting of 4 consecutive doses of efgartigimod administered over 3  weeks (one cycle), followed by a 5-week follow-up period to assess the tolerability of efgartigimod’s therapeutic effects. The primary outcome was the mean change in MG activities of daily living (MG-ADL) total score from baseline to 4  weeks. MG-ADL responder was defined as a ≥  2-point improvement that persisted for 4  weeks, starting by week 4. Safety evaluations encompassed the monitoring of adverse events (AE) and serious AE (SAE) throughout the study. Results: Between 5 July 2022 and 25 August 2023, a total of 14 gMG patients were included. The mean age was 57.7  years, with a mean MG-ADL score of 10.86  ±  3.32. At week 4, MG-ADL scores showed a mean reduction of 6 points, reaching a maximum decline of 13 points. Among the patients, 85.7% (12/14) achieved MG-ADL responder status after one cycle of treatment. The most significant reduction in quantitative MG (QMG) scores also occurred at week 4, with a mean decrease of 7 points. Notably, the improvements in MG-ADL and QMG scores persisted until week 8. During treatment and follow-up period, only two mild neck rashes occurred and resolved promptly. No infections or SAE were reported. Discussion: A single cycle of efgartigimod treatment demonstrates effectiveness and the tolerability through week 8, with no new safety signals observed in Chinese gMG patients. Porcine idiopathic vesicular disease (PIVD), one of several clinically indistinguishable vesicular diseases of pigs, is caused by the emerging pathogen Senecavirus A (SVA). Despite the widespread prevalence of porcine SVA infection, no effective commercial vaccines for PIVD prevention and control are available, due to high costs associated with vaccine testing in pigs, considerable SVA diversity, and SVA rapid evolution. In this study, SVA CH/JL/2022 (OP562896), a novel mutant SVA strain derived from an isolate obtained from a pig farm in Jilin Province, China, was inactivated then combined with four adjuvants, MONTANIDETM GEL02 PR (GEL 02), MONTANIDETM ISA 201 VG (ISA 201), MONTANIDETM IMG 1313 VG N (IMS1313), or Rehydragel LV (LV). The resulting inactivated SVA CH/JL/2022 vaccines were assessed for efficacy in mice and found to induce robust in vivo lymphocyte proliferation responses and strong IgG1, IgG2a, and neutralizing antibody responses with IgG2a/IgG1 ratios of <1. Furthermore, all vaccinated groups exhibited significantly higher levels of serum cytokines IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, and IFN as compared to unvaccinated mice. These results indicate that all vaccines elicited both Th1 and Th2 responses, with Th2 responses predominating. Moreover, vaccinated mice exhibited enhanced resistance to SVA infection, as evidenced by reduced viral RNA levels and SVA infection-induced histopathological changes. Collectively, our results demonstrate that the SVA-GEL vaccine induced more robust immunological responses in mice than did the other three vaccines, thus highlighting the potential of SVA-GEL to serve an effective tool for preventing and controlling SVA infection. The adoption of green control technologies in agriculture is an important approach to ensure the quality and safety of agricultural products, address agricultural pollution from its source, and promote increased productivity and income in agriculture, thereby driving high-quality agricultural development. This paper is based on production and operation data from 2,155 tea farmers in 16 major tea-producing provinces in China. Using an endogenous transformation model from the perspective of the value chain, it empirically analyzes the impact of adopting green control technologies on tea farmers' income and draws three conclusions. First, the adoption of green control technologies significantly promotes income growth for tea farmers. Second, the awareness of tea farmers regarding pesticide residue limits and the exchange of pest control techniques among tea farmers significantly enhance the adoption of green control technologies. Third, the income effects of adopting green control technologies differ across different stages of the value chain, with the income growth in the cultivation stage being lower than that in the processing and marketing stages. Finally, based on the analysis and relevant research by scholars, four targeted suggestions are proposed: (1) Increase efforts to promote the adoption of green control technologies and enhance farmers' willingness to adopt them. (2) Promote education and training on green control technologies for tea farmers. (3) Ensure fair distribution of benefits along the agricultural value chain. Background Endovascular therapy administered within 24 hours has been shown to improve outcomes for patients with acute ischemic stroke with large infarction, but the data on its cost-effectiveness are limited. Objective To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke with large infarction in China, the largest low- and middle-income country. Methods A short-term decision tree model and a long-term Markov model were used to analyze the cost-effectiveness of endovascular therapy for patients with acute ischemic stroke with large infarction. Outcomes, transition probability, and cost data were obtained from a recent clinical trial and published literature. The benefit of endovascular therapy was assessed by the cost per quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) gained in the short and long term. Deterministic one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the robustness of the results. Results Compared with medical management alone, endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke with large infarction was found to be cost-effective from the fourth year onward and during a lifetime. In the long term, endovascular therapy yielded a lifetime gain of 1.33 QALYs at an additional cost of ¥73 900 (US$ 11 400), resulting in an incremental cost of ¥55 500 (US$ 8530) per QALY gained. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis showed that endovascular therapy was cost-effective in 99.5% of the simulation runs at a willingness-to-pay threshold of ¥243 000 (3 x gross domestic product per capita of China in 2021) per QALY gained. Student voice behavior is an important aspect of school culture. Raising awareness of student voice can support academic achievement and deepen school reforms, and this study explored the influence of college students' perception of teacher-parent leadership on their voice behavior based on the Chinese cultural background. Based on social exchange theory, a convenience sampling method was applied to conduct a questionnaire survey on 709 college students from 5 universities in Hebei Province, China. After analyzing by SEM (Structural Equation Modeling), the study showed that: In teacher paternalistic leadership, benevolent leadership and moral leadership have a significant positive impact on voice behavior while authoritarian leadership has a meaningful negative impact. Therefore, teacher paternalistic leadership can provide psychological care and academic support for students, set a fair and moral example, and avoid making authoritarian decisions, providing a supportive voice environment for students. Purpose: To explore the epidemiological trends in acetabular fracture and report the mid-term to long-term clinical outcomes of the elderly treated with operation. Methods: Retrospective study. Patients aged ≥ 14 years with operative treatment of the Acetabular fracture from Jan 2010 to Dec 2019 at a level-1 trauma centre were identified to analyze the epidemiological trends, and the difference in fracture patterns between young and elderly patients (≥ 60 years old) were compared. The elderly patients were followed up to evaluate their clinical outcomes and satisfaction degree (worst to best: 0 to10). The patients were divided into the 2010–2014 group and the 2015–2019 group according to the year of admission, and the clinical outcomes of the two groups were compared to verify the stability from mid-term to long-term after surgery for acetabular fracture. Results: A total of 1024 patients (mean age 43.35 years, range 14–86 years) with acetabular fractures received operative treatment in this decade. The mean age of the acetabular fracture patients increased from 41.1 years to 47.7 years, and the proportion of elderly patients increased from 5.7% to 24.0%, with some volatility. The ratio of male to female decreased year by year, and the proportion of female patients increased with age. And the anterior fracture patterns were more common in the elderly patients compared to the young patients (P < 0.001). 118 elderly patients (82 males, 36 females; mean age 66.91 years, range 60–86 years) were followed-up (mean 77.4 months, range 35–152 months). The overall mortality rate of the elderly patients was 7.69% (9/118). The Harris hip score of those alive patients was 90.41 ± 12.91 points (excellent and good rate 84.4%). 87 patients completed the SF-12 with a normal HRQoL (PCS 50.49 ± 8.88 points; MCS 55.66 ± 8.86 points). 90.8% of the patients achieved a satisfaction score of 9 or higher. And there was no significant difference in clinical outcomes between the 2010–2014 group and the 2015–2019 group (P > 0.05). Conclusions: In conclusion, acetabular fractures presented an obvious ageing trend in China, and the fracture patterns of the elderly patients differed from those in the young patients. Background: The incidence of acute ischemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusion is relatively infrequent in the young adult population. We sought to evaluate their clinical outcomes after endovascular treatment (EVT) and stroke etiology compared with older patients. Methods: We examined data from the ANGEL-ACT registry, a nationwide study in China focusing on EVT for acute ischemic stroke. We compared two age groups: <50 years old and ≥50 years old. Our analysis focused on outcome measures such as the 90-daymodified Rankin Scale (mRS) score, mortality, and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH). We adjusted for confounding variables. Results: We included 1,691 patients, and 216 patients (13%) were <50 years old. Young patients had lower median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores (14 vs. 17, P < 0.001) and fewer cardiovascular comorbidities than older patients. Underlying intracranial atherosclerosis disease (ICAD) was higher in young patients (39.4 vs. 28.7%, P = 0.001). Clinical outcome was less favorable in older compared to younger patients (mRS shift: 0.76 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.58-0.99]); functional independence [mRS score 0-2] 61% vs. 39% (adjusted odds ratio (OR), 0.7 [95% CI, 0.51-0.97]). Mortality and sICH did not differ between groups. Onset to puncture time (OTP) was longer in young patients (357min vs. 294min, P = 0.001). Conclusion: An estimated 13% of patients who underwent endovascular thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke were <50 years old. Background: No interventional study has been conducted in China to assess efficacy and safety of perampanel in treating Chinese patients with epilepsy, nor has there been any study on perampanel early add-on therapy in China. This interventional study aimed to assess efficacy and safety of perampanel as an early add-on treatment of focal-onset seizures (FOS) with or without focal-to-bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCS) in Chinese patients. Methods: In this multicenter, open-label, single-arm, phase 4 interventional study, Chinese patients ≥ 12-years old with FOS with or without FBTCS who failed anti-seizure medication (ASM) monotherapy from 15 hospitals in China were enrolled and treated with perampanel add-on therapy (8-week titration followed by 24-week maintenance). The primary endpoint was 50% responder rate. Secondary endpoints included seizure-freedom rate and changes in seizure frequency from baseline. Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and drug-related TEAEs were recorded. Results: The full analysis set included 150 patients. The mean maintenance perampanel dose was 5.9 ± 1.5 mg/day and the 8-month retention rate was 72%. The 50% responder rate and seizure-freedom rate for all patients during maintenance were 67.9 and 30.5%, respectively. Patients with FBTCS had higher 50% responder rate (96.0%) and seizure-freedom rate (76.0%) during maintenance. Patients on concomitant sodium valproate had a significantly higher seizure-freedom rate than those on concomitant oxcarbazepine. Eight-six (55.1%) patients experienced treatment-related TEAEs, and the most common TEAEs were dizziness (36.5%), hypersomnia (11.5%), headache (3.9%), somnolence (3.2%), and irritability (3.2%). Withdrawal due to TEAEs occurred to 14.7% of the patients. Conclusion: Perampanel early add-on was effective and safe in treating Chinese patients≥12 years old with FOS with or without FBTCS. Many studies in China investigated how the lockdown following the coronavirus disease 2019 substantially affected air quality; however, few were conducted in Northeastern China. Here, the changes in six criteria air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3), were investigated in Shenyang from January to May 2015-2020. Compared with the pre-lockdown, the mass concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO during the lockdown decreased by 40.3% to 48.6%, indicating a positive impact of lockdown policies on reducing pollutant emissions. The responses of PM2.5, PM10, and CO to the lockdown measures in downtown areas were more sensitive than in the suburbs. However, the O3 concentration showed the opposite trend, attributed to the drop in NOx and particulate matters. Compared to the same period in 2015-2019, the proportion of days with good air quality increased from 63.2% to 77.2% during the lockdown and Shenyang experienced no severe pollution. Background: Controversy exists regarding the need of advanced imaging for patient selection in the extended window. Aims: To analyze the effect of initial imaging modalities on clinical outcomes of patients underwent MT in the extended window. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of a prospective registry, the Endovascular Treatment Key Technique and Emergency Workflow Improvement of Acute Ischemic Stroke (ANGEL-ACT) registry which was conducted at 111 hospitals between November 2017 and March 2019 in China. Primary study cohort and Guideline like cohort were identified, in each cohort, two imaging modalities for patient selection in 6 to 24 h window were defined: (1) NCCT ± CTA, (2) MRI. Guideline-like cohort were further screened based on key features of the DAWN and DEFUSE 3 trials. The primary outcome was 90 day mRS. The safety outcomes were sICH, any ICH and 90-day mortality. Results: After adjusting for covariates, there were no significant differences in 90 day mRS or any safety outcomes between two imaging modalities groups in both cohorts. All outcome measures of mixed-effects logistic regression model were consistent with propensity score matching model. Conclusion: Our results indicate that patients presented with anterior large vessel occlusion in the extended time window can potentially benefit from MT even in the absence of MRI selection. Background Parenchymal hemorrhage (PH) is a troublesome complication after endovascular treatment (EVT). Objective To investigate the incidence, independent predictors, and clinical impact of PH after EVT in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO). Methods Subjects were selected from the ANGEL-ACT Registry. PH was diagnosed according to the European Collaborative Acute Stroke Study classification. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the independent predictors of PH, as well as the association between PH and 90-day functional outcome assessed by modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score. Results Of the 1227 enrolled patients, 147 (12.0%) were diagnosed with PH within 12-36 hours after EVT. On multivariable analysis, low admission Alberta Stroke Program Early CT score (ASPECTS)(adjusted OR (aOR)=1.13, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.26, p=0.020), serum glucose >7 mmol/L (aOR=1.82, 95% CI 1.16 to 2.84, p=0.009), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR; aOR=1.05, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.09, p=0.005) were associated with a high risk of PH, while underlying intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS; aOR=0.42, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.81, p=0.009) and intracranial angioplasty/stenting (aOR=0.37, 95% CI 0.15 to 0.93, p=0.035) were associated with a low risk of PH. Furthermore, patients with PH were associated with a shift towards to worse functional outcome (mRS score 4 vs 3, adjusted common OR (acOR)=2.27, 95% CI 1.53 to 3.38, p<0.001). Conclusions In Chinese patients with AIS caused by anterior circulation LVO, the risk of PH was positively associated with low admission ASPECTS, serum glucose >7 mmol/L, and NLR, but negatively related to underlying ICAS and intracranial angioplasty/stenting. Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune small bowel disease. The pattern of gut microbiota is closely related to dietary habits, genetic background, and geographical factors. There is a lack of research on CD-related gut microbiota in China. This study aimed to use 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolomics to analyze the fecal microbial composition and metabolome characteristics in patients diagnosed with CD in Northwest China, and to screen potential biomarkers that could be used for its diagnosis. A significant difference in the gut microbiota composition was observed between the CD and healthy controls groups. At the genus level, the abundance of Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, Veillonella, and Allisonella communities in the CD group were increased (Q < 0.05). Furthermore, the abundance of Ruminococcus, Faecalibacterium, Blautia, Gemmiger, and Anaerostipes community in this group were decreased (Q < 0.05). A total of 222 different fecal metabolites were identified in the two groups, suggesting that CD patients have a one-carbon metabolism defect. Four species of bacteria and six metabolites were selected as potential biomarkers using a random forest model. Correlation analysis showed that changes in the gut microbiota were significantly correlated with changes in fecal metabolite levels. In conclusion, the patterns of distribution of gut microbiota and metabolomics in patients with CD in Northwest China were found to be unique to these individuals. Objective: To identify the predominant type of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) and outcomes in patients with simultaneous multiple intracerebral hemorrhages (SMICH). Methods: Consecutive patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) from a single-center prospective cohort were retrospectively reviewed. Presumed etiology was classified according to the SMASH-U criteria. Demographics, clinical and laboratory variables, and neuroimaging data were compared between patients with primary SMICH and those with single ICH. Functional outcomes were assessed using the modified Rankin scale 90 days after ICH. Results: Of the 598 enrolled patients, 37 (6.2%) met the criteria for SMICH. Risk factors for SMICH included a high burden of deep cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) (odds ratio [OR] 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00-1.12; p = 0.040), white matter hyperintensity scores (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.04-1.57; p = 0.021), history of ICH (OR 3.38, 95% CI 1.31-8.05; p = 0.008), and low serum magnesium levels (OR 0.01, 95% CI 0.00-0.25; p = 0.007). Based on the SMASH-U classification, 15(40.5%) SMICH were classified as hypertension, whereas 17 (45.9%) as undetermined-etiology. To further explore the potential microangiopathy underlying undetermined-SMICH, these patients with undetermined-etiology were compared to those with cerebral amyloid angiopathy-ICH, and were associated with a higher burden of deep CMBs but less severe centrum semiovale enlarged perivascular spaces. Likewise, compared with hypertension-ICH patients, those with undetermined SMICH were consistently associated with a higher deep CMB counts. Moreover, multivariate analysis revealed that SMICH was independently associated with poor outcomes (OR 2.23, 95%CI 1.03-4.76; p = 0.038). Conclusion: Our results suggest that most patients with primary SMICH harbor hypertensive-SVD as principal angiopathy. Patients with SMICH are at a high risk of poor outcomes. Background: Patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) may suffer from multisystem injury, including an impaired cardiovascular system. However, M-mode echocardiography, the current dominant echocardiographic modality, is limited in the detection of myocardial injury. We considered the use of left ventricular strain imaging in detecting myocardial injury and explored the serum lipid profile related to cardiovascular disease in later-onset SMA children. Methods: A case-control study involving 80 patients with later-onset SMA and 80 age-, gender-, and body surface area-matched control children was conducted in a single tertiary pediatric hospital in China. Data on the left ventricular strain measured using two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography, left ventricular function parameters assessed by M-mode echocardiography, and serum lipid profile of these two groups were retrospectively collected for differential analysis. Results: The mean age of the 80 SMA patients were (6.87 ± 2.87) years, of which 46 were type 2 and 34 were type 3 patients. The global longitudinal strain (GLS) of the SMA group (-18.7 ± 2.9%, p < 0.001) was lower than that of the control group; the time to peak longitudinal strain (TTPLS) of the SMA group (22.9 ± 13.6 ms, p < 0.001) was higher than that of the control group, while left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS), measured by the Teichholz method of M-mode echocardiography, showed no significant differences between the two groups. In addition, independent indicators for cardiovascular risk, including total cholesterol (TC)/HDL, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)/HDL, and Apo B/Apo A1 levels, were higher in SMA children than in the control group. Conclusion: Compared with healthy controls, later-onset SMA children presented with reduced GLS and prolonged TTPLS while the LVEF and LVFS values were within normal range. In particular, whether a reduced GLS or prolonged TTPLS in later-onset SMA compared to the control group can predict the risk of future cardiomyopathy remains to be investigated. Theory and experiments support that plant invasions largely impact aboveground biodiversity and function. Yet, much less is known on the influence of plant invasions on the structure and function of the soil microbiome of coastal wetlands, one of the largest major reservoirs of biodiversity and carbon on Earth. We studied the continental-scale invasion of Spartina alterniflora across 2451 km of Chinese coastlines as our model-system and found that S. alterniflora invasion can largely influence the soil microbiome (across six depths from 0 to 100 cm), compared with the most common microhabitat found before invasion (mudflats, Mud). In detail, S. alterniflora invasion was not only positively associated with bacterial richness but also resulted in important biotic homogenization of bacterial communities, suggesting that plant invasion can lead to important continental scale trade-offs in the soil microbiome. We found that plant invasion changed the community composition of soil bacterial communities across the soil profile. Moreover, the bacterial communities associated with S. alterniflora invasions where less responsive to climatic changes than those in native Mud microhabitats, suggesting that these new microbial communities might become more dominant under climate change. Plant invasion also resulted in important reductions in the complexity and stability of microbial networks, decoupling the associations between microbes and carbon pools. Taken together, our results indicated that plant invasions can largely influence the microbiome of coastal wetlands at the scale of China, representing the first continental-scale example on how plant invasions can reshuffle the soil microbiome, with consequences for the myriad of functions that they support. Background: For patients with symptomatic intracranial and vertebral artery stenosis who receive endovascular treatment, in-stent restenosis (ISR) is associated with the recurrence of ischemic stroke. This study evaluated a drug-eluting stent (DES) vs. bare metal stent (BMS) for the treatment of symptomatic intracranial and vertebral artery stenosis. Methods: The trial was a multicenter, 1:1 randomized, prospective feasibility clinical trial with 10 participating centers in China from March 2014 to October 2015. Eligible patients had symptomatic intracranial and vertebral artery stenosis (70%-99%) and had medical drug treatment failure. The primary endpoint was the rate of in-stent restenosis at 180 days of randomization. The secondary endpoint was a composite of the following two outcomes: (1) ischemic stroke or transient cerebral ischemia (TIA) in the same territory as the presenting event (distal to the target lesion) between 30 days and 1 year after randomization and (2) successful stent implantation. The safety outcome was the presence of stroke in any territory and death within 30 days of randomization or adverse events. Group t-tests or Wilcoxon rank-sum tests were used for the intergroup comparison of quantitative data according to the data distribution. The chi-square test or exact probability method was used for the classification data. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test or CMH test was used for the categorical data. Results: We enrolled 188 patients at 10 medical centers in China (92 assigned to the DES group and 96 to the BMS group). The mean age of the 188 study participants was 61.6 years (range, 38-75 years); 152 participants (80.9%) were male. There were 28 patients (43.8%) with an ISR at 180 days in the BMS group and 10 patients (14.5%) in the DES group [risk difference, 29.3% (95% CI, 14.5%-44.0%); P = 0.001]. The percent of patients with ischemic stroke or TIA in the same territory between 30 days and 1 year was 5.2% (5/96) in the BMS group and 2.2% (2/92) in the DES group [risk difference, 3.0%; (95% CI, -2.3% to 8.2%); P = 0.354]. The percent of patients with successful stent implantation was 99.0% (95/96) in the BMS group and 97.8% (90/92) in the DES group [risk difference, 1.1%; (95% CI, -1.7% to 3.9%); P = 0.584]. In total, five patients (5.2%) in the BMS group and three patients (3.3%) in the DES group [risk difference, 1.9%; (95% CI, -2.3% to 6.1%); P = 0.721] had stroke in any territory and death within the 30-day follow-up. Total adverse events occurred 167 times in 72 patients (75.0%) in the BMS group compared with 114 times in 59 patients (64.1%) in the DES group [risk difference, 10.9%; (95% CI, -0.1% to 21.7%); P = 0.115]. Conclusions: Among patients with symptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis and vertebral artery stenosis, the use of a drug-eluting stent compared with a bare metal stent resulted in a decreased risk of ISR, similar successful stent implantation, and similar adverse events. Background: This study aims to develop and validate a nomogram for predicting 1- and 2-year generalization probabilities in patients with ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG). Methods: In total, 501 eligible patients with OMG treated at seven tertiary hospitals in China between January 2015 and May 2019 were included. The primary outcome measure was disease generalization. A nomogram for predicting 1- and 2-year generalization probabilities was constructed using a stepwise Cox regression model. Nomogram performance was quantified using C-indexes and calibration curves. Twoyear cumulative generalization rates were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method for distinct nomogram-stratified risk groups. The clinical usefulness of the nomogram was evaluated using decision curve analysis (DCA). Result: The eligible patients were randomly divided into a development cohort (n=351, 70%) and a validation cohort (n=150, 30%). The final model included five variables: sex, onset age, repetitive nerve stimulation findings, acetylcholine receptor antibody test results, and thymic status. The model demonstrated good discrimination (C-indexes of 0.733 and 0.788 in the development and validation cohorts, respectively) and calibration, with good agreement between actual and nomogram-estimated generalization probabilities. Kaplan -Meier curves revealed higher 2-year cumulative generalization rates in the high-risk group than that in the low-risk group. DCA demonstrated a higher net benefit of nomogramassisted decisions compared to treatment of all patients or none. Conclusion: The nomogram model can predict 1- and 2-year generalization probabilities in patients with OMG and stratified these patients into distinct generalization risk groups. Objective of this research is to accurately stimulate the hydrodynamic process in reservoirs thereby summarizing the hydrodynamics in reservoirs and figuring out its impact on the migration, conversion, and concentration of pollutants. For this purpose, this paper employed a 2D unstructured shallow water hydrodynamic model to perform numerical simulation on the flow field of the Yazidang Reservoir, one of the major reservoirs in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China; grids of shore boundaries in the model were densified to better fit the terrain changes at the boundaries, and the impact of wind field, and inflow/outflow on the flow field in the target reservoir was studied. The research findings suggest that, wind velocity has a great impact on the circulation intensity of the target reservoir, but it has no obvious impact on the circulation structure; the inflow and outflow have a certain impact on the area near the water inlet and outlet, and the range of this impact is related to the size of water volume of the inflow/outflow; under calm wind condition, the flow field of Yazidang Reservoir is entirely determined by the inflow and outflow, but the impact on the area far from the water inlet and outlet is very small, and wind field is one of the decisive factors for the flow field of Yazidang Reservoir. Mental stress has been recognized as an essential risk factor for hypertension. Therefore, experts specializing in cardiology, psychiatry, and Traditional Chinese Medicine organized by the Psycho-Cardiology Group of College of Cardiovascular Physicians of Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Hypertension Group of Chinese Society of Cardiology proposed the expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of adult mental stress-induced hypertension in March 2021, which includes the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the mental stress-induced hypertension. This consensus will hopefully facilitate the clinical practice of this disorder. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the primary global sources of psychosocial stressors since the beginning of 2020, and the revision of this expert consensus in 2022 has increased the relevant content. Background There remains major uncertainty regarding the optimal therapy for symptomatic nonacute extracranial vertebral artery occlusion (EVAO). Endovascular recanalization for EVAO is technically challenging, and limited data are available. This research aimed to report a multicenter clinical experience of endovascular recanalization for symptomatic nonacute EVAO and establish a novel angiographic classification. Methods From June 2011 to December 2019, 50 symptomatic nonacute EVAO patients treated with endovascular recanalization in three regional referral stroke centers were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were categorized into four groups based on the angiographic classification. The rates of technical success, periprocedural complications, any stroke or death within 1 month, and follow-up data were assessed. Results The rates of technical success, periprocedural complications, and any stroke or death within 1 month were 86.0% (43/50), 12.0% (6/50), and 4.0% (2/50), respectively. The recanalization rates gradually decreased from Type A to Type D (100%, 94.7%, 80%, and 63.6%, respectively; P=0.007). The EVAO patients in the Type A group with tapered stump and short-segment occlusions showed excellent recanalization effects, with 100% technical success rates and no complications. Conversely, the lowest recanalization rate of 63.6% (7/11) and the highest periprocedural complication rate of 27.3% (3/11) were observed for the Type D group. Conclusions Endovascular recanalization for symptomatic nonacute EVAO is technically feasible, especially Type A EVAO patients, which can provide an alternative treatment option for recurrent vertebrobasilar ischemia despite optimal medical therapy. Background The outcome of deploying balloon-mounted stents for symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) has not been fully investigated. In this study we evaluate the safety and long- term outcome of using balloon- mounted stents to treat symptomatic ICAS in comparison with the WEAVE/WOVEN study. Methods In a multicenter registry study of stenting for symptomatic intracranial artery stenosis in China, 159 patients treated with an intracranial balloon-mounted stent approved by the China Food and Drug Administration were evaluated. The morphological features of the lesions were categorized by Mori classification. The endpoints, including periprocedural and long- term clinical and radiological outcomes, were the same as those in the WEAVE/WOVEN study. Results In the present study the mean percent stenosis before and after stenting was 84.0% and 6.1%, respectively. The proportions of Mori A, Mori B, and Mori C lesions were 33.3%, 52.2%, and 14.5%, respectively. The 72- hour rates of stroke and mortality after the procedure were 0%. The 1- year rates of any stroke, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and death were 6.3% (10/159), 5.7% (9/159), 0.6% (1/159), and 0.6% (1/159), respectively. The 1- year rate of in- stent restenosis (ISR) was 23.4% (15/64). The rate of ISR in Mori C lesions (53.8%, 7/13) was significantly higher than that in Mori A (15.8%, 3/19) or Mori B lesions (15.6%, 5/32) (p=0.024). Conclusions The short- term and long- term outcomes of using a balloon- mounted stent for symptomatic ICAS with focal and non- angular lesions (Mori A and B type) and smooth arterial access were comparable to the results of the WEAVE/WOVEN trial. China is experiencing significant public health challenges related to social and demographic transitions and lifestyle transformations following unprecedented economic reforms four decades ago. Of particular public health concern is the fourfold increase in overweight and obesity rates in the nation's youth population, coupled with the low prevalence of adolescents meeting recommended levels of physical activity. Improving the overall health of China's more than 170 million children and adolescents has become a national priority. However, advancing nationwide health initiatives and physical activity promotion in this population has been hampered by the lack of a population-specific and culturally relevant consensus on recommendations for achieving these ends. To address this deficiency and inform policies to achieve Healthy China 2030 goals, a panel of Chinese experts, complemented by international professionals, developed this consensus statement. The consensus was achieved through an iterative process that began with a literature search from electronic databases; in-depth reviews, conducted by a steering committee, of the resulting articles; and panel group evaluations and discussions in the form of email correspondence, conference calls and written communications. Ultimately, the panel agreed on 10 major themes with strong scientific evidence that, in children and adolescents aged 6-17, participating in moderate to vigorous physical activities led to multiple positive health outcomes. Our consensus statement also (1) highlights major challenges in promoting physical activity, (2) identifies future research that addresses current knowledge gaps, and (3) provides recommendations for teachers, education experts, parents and policymakers for promoting physical activity among Chinese school-aged children and adolescents. This consensus statement aligns with international efforts to develop global physical activity guidelines to promote physical activity and health and prevent lifestyle-related diseases in children and adolescents. More importantly, it provides a foundation for developing culturally appropriate and effective physical activity interventions, health promotion strategies and policy initiatives to improve the health of Chinese children and adolescents. Background and purpose In-stent restenosis (ISR) is one of the long-term adverse outcomes of endovascular angioplasty and stenting for symptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis. In this study, we try to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment for intracranial ISR. Methods We retrospectively collected patients with intracranial ISR who underwent endovascular treatment from June 2012 to August 2019 at a high-volume stroke center. Successful recanalization was defined as ≤30% residual stenosis. Stroke, myocardial infarction, and death after stenting within 30 days were used to evaluate periprocedural safety. Recurrent stroke in the territory of the culprit vessel and re-ISR in patients with clinical and vascular imaging follow-up data were used to evaluate the long-term outcome. Results 32 patients (59.6±7.2 years old) with ISR were recruited, including 22 patients (68.8%) treated with balloon dilatation, 8 patients (25%) with stenting, and 2 patients (6.3%) with failed procedures. Successful recanalization was achieved in 71.9% (23/32) of patients. There was no stroke, myocardial infarction or death within 30 days after the procedure. Recurrent stroke was found in 10.7% (3/28) of the patients, and re-ISR was found in 42.1% (8/19) of the patients. The re-ISR rate was lower in patients with stenting than in those with balloon dilatation (0% vs 57.1%, p=0.090), and in patients with successful recanalization than in those with unsuccessful recanalization (33.3% vs 75.0%, p=0.352), but with no statistically significant difference. Conclusions The periprocedural safety of endovascular treatment for intracranial ISR may be acceptable, but the long-term rates of recurrent stroke and re-ISR remain at high levels. Deep mining is the most important way to obtain the resource in China now. Thus, rock is the main objective that the deep mining will encounter. Meanwhile, the frequent catastrophes in deep mining such as rock burst, coal and gas bursts, roof caving, water bursts, is the most serious problem. To have a better understanding of the mechanisms of fracture and the laws of damage evolution of rock and coal under deep environment, in this paper, the micro- and meso-scale method is employed to study the behavior of coal under different temperature, confining pressure and gas pressure. Then, the significance of the effect of temperature, confining pressure, and gas pressure on mechanical parameters is analyzed by using the ANOVA method. The fractal study of coal failure pattern by employing the SEM test and fractal dimension was carried out. The fractal dimension of coal fractures was calculated by using the box-covering method. BACKGROUND: Transapical off-pump NeoChord procedure is a novel minimally invasive surgical repair of degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR). Here, we report the first four cases of NeoChord procedure in patients with mitral valve prolapse in mainland China. METHODS: Four patients, aged 86, 84, 80 and 60 years, with severe MR due to posterior middle scallop prolapse (P2), underwent transapical off-pump artifi cial chordae implantation on April 9 and 10, 2019. The procedure was performed by left mini-thoracotomy under general anaesthesia and guided by 2D and 3D dimensional transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE). RESULTS: Mitral valve repair via NeoChord procedure was successfully performed with implantation of 3 artifi cial chordae in the fi rst patient and 3, 2, and 3 artifi cial chordae in the following patients, respectively. Intraoperative TEE and pre-discharge transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) showed only mild to moderate MR of these four patients and no postoperative complications were noted. There were no changes of TTE fi nding between one-month follow-up and pre-discharge. CONCLUSION: The successful NeoChord procedures in four Chinese indicate that the valve repair using the NeoChord system for Chinese population is feasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate extremes are changing at mid-high latitudes due to the effects of climate change. We defined the duration of surface icing (ice formation on open water) in north China from 1961 to 2015, along with its annual start and end date, based on daily measurements by observers at 346 weather stations. A comprehensive analysis of the temporal and spatial variations in these data showed that the regional mean of annual surface icing duration has a high correlation coefficient of 0.97 with the number of frost days (calculated from the daily minimum temperature below 0 °C), with some discrepancies. As the start date trended later and the end date trended earlier in this region, the surface icing duration decreased by 2.6 days/decade from 1961 to 2015 and the slope became steeper by -4.8 days/decade during the most recent 25 years. Tibetan frogs, Nanorana parkeri, are differentiated genetically but not morphologically along geographical and elevational gradients in a challenging environment, presenting a unique opportunity to investigate processes leading to speciation. Analyses of whole genomes of 63 frogs reveal population structuring and historical demography, characterized by highly restricted gene flow in a narrow geographic zone lying between matrilines West (W) and East (E). A population found only along a single tributary of the Yalu Zangbu River has the mitogenome only of E, whereas nuclear genes of W comprise 89–95% of the nuclear genome. Selection accounts for 579 broadly scattered, highly divergent regions (HDRs) of the genome, which involve 365 genes. These genes fall into 51 gene ontology (GO) functional classes, 14 of which are likely to be important in driving reproductive isolation. GO enrichment analyses of E reveal many overrepresented functional categories associated with adaptation to high elevations, including blood circulation, response to hypoxia, and UV radiation. Four genes, including DNAJC8 in the brain, TNNC1 and ADORA1 in the heart, and LAMB3 in the lung, differ in levels of expression between low- and high-elevation populations. High-altitude adaptation plays an important role in maintaining and driving continuing divergence and reproductive isolation. Combined ESR and U-series methods have been increasingly applied to the paleolithic and paleoanthropological sites from Early to Middle Pleistocene period. However, this dating method is seldom used for the Late Pleistocene or even younger sites comparing with other radiometric methods, such as 14C charcoal dating, U-series carbonate dating and OSL sediment dating. The important advantage of ESR dating is that it allows direct analysis of fossil tooth from animal and human remains. Here, we report a combined ESR and U-series dating study of Naminan paleolithic site, a Paleolithic-Neolithic transition site located on the border between China and Myanmar. The stone artifacts with typical "Hoabinhian Industrial" characteristics indicate the human migration and interactions between Southeast Asia and South China. Apart from an obvious older age of 31 ka, our ESR analysis of ten tooth enamel samples gives the age estimation of 12-21 ka on fossils from the paleolithic cultural layer of Naminan site. The obtained ESR ages of fossil teeth are in agreement with the 14C and U-Th chronology for Naminan site in general. When dating the young fossil samples from the site like Naminan, we noticed that due to the relative low uranium concentration in the enamel tissues (0.01-0.3 ppm), the internal dose rate plays a much less important role than the external beta and gamma dose rate to the total dose rate in the fossil samples. Therefore, the dose rate evaluation of the surrounding sediment is the main source of uncertainty that may affect the reliability of the ESR dating results. In this study, we also attempt to use a standard growth curve (SGC) of enamel to determine the DE and compared with the values obtained by additive dose (AD) method (12-34 Gy). Although the current precision of DE results estimated by SGC are lower than AD, it shows the potential to quick decide a more reasonable Dmax for irradiation and identify the possible intrusion fossil samples. As the largest magnesium producer in the world, China is facing a great challenge of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction. In this paper, the variation trend and driving factors of GHG emissions from Chinese magnesium production were evaluated and the measures of technology and policy for effectively mitigating GHG emissions were provided. First, the energy-related and process-oriented GHG inventory is compiled for magnesium production in China. Then, the driving forces for the changes of the energy-related emission were analyzed by the method of Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) decomposition. Results demonstrated that Chinese magnesium output from 2003 to 2013 increased by 125%, whereas GHG emissions only increased by 16%. The emissions caused by the fuels consumption decline most significantly (from 28.4 to 6.6 t CO2eq/t Mg) among all the emission sources. The energy intensity and the energy structure were the main offsetting factors for the increase of GHG emissions, while the scale of production and the international market demand were the main contributors for the total increase. Considering the improvement of technology application and more stringent policy measures, the annual GHG emissions from Chinese primary magnesium production will be controlled within 22 million tons by 2020. Background: To investigate the relationship between health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and survival in Chinese patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). Methods: HRQOL was measured with the Chinese version of Short Form 36 (SF-36). SF-36 scores, demographic and clinical data were collected at baseline and after 18 months follow-up. Kaplan-Meier and Cox Proportional Hazard Regression survival analyses were used for interpretation of data. Surviving patients were censored in the analyses. Results: A total of 415 Chinese patients with CLD and 86 healthy controls were enrolled. During the follow-up period 50 patients died. SF-36 scores in healthy controls and surviving patients were higher compared with those in deceased patients. Scores of physical component summary (PCS) in healthy controls, surviving and deceased patients were 54.1 ± 5.2, 48.9 ± 7.7 and 33.5 ± 8.2 respectively (p < 0.001). Scores of mental component summary (MCS) in healthy controls, surviving and deceased patients were 56.6 ± 8.2, 53.0 ± 5.6 and 37.1 ± 12.1 (p < 0.001) respectively. Survival was significantly associated with PCS and MCS scores, and the presence of ascites. Conclusions: HRQOL was associated with survival in patients with CLD. Arsenic and mercury are typical elements with high toxicity found in sewage sludge, and only low content of them could cause severe environmental risks. Therefore, changes of arsenic and mercury during sludge treatment and disposal should be concerned. In this study, ultrasound irradiation was used for sludge treatment. The contents and chemical fraction changes of arsenic and mercury during sludge sonication were investigated in detail. Results showed that arsenic and mercury were released from sewage sludge into the aqueous phase by sonication. The concentrations of arsenic and mercury in the aqueous phase increased steadily during 30 min of sonication. The release of arsenic was higher than that of mercury (58% vs. 26%), since the content of unsteady chemical fractions of arsenic in sludge was high. Sonication enhanced the stability of arsenic and mercury in sludge. For arsenic, the unsteady fraction decreased from 85.0% to 0.0% and transformed into a stable fraction after 30 min of sonication. For mercury, the chemical fractions changed little during sonication due to the high content of stable fractions in mercury. Furthermore, a 'concentration' phenomenon of arsenic and mercury in the solid phase occurred during sonication. The fossil ape Lufengpithecus is known from a number of late Miocene sites in Yunnan Province in southern China. Along with other fossil apes from South and Southeast Asia. it is widely considered to be a relative of the extant orangutan, Pongo pygmaeus. It is best represented at the type site of Shihuiba (Lufeng) by several partial to nearly complete but badly crushed adult crania. There is, however, an additional, minimally distorted cranium of a young juvenile from a nearly contemporaneous site in the Yuanmou Basin. which affords the opportunity to better assess the relationships between Lufengpitherus and Pongo. Comparison with similarly aged juvenile skulls of extant great apes reveals no features suggesting clear affinities to orangutans, and instead reveals a morphological pattern largely consistent with a stem member of the hominid (great ape and human) dade. The existence at this time of other hominids in South Asia (Sivapithecus) and Southeast Asia (Khoratpithecus) with clear craniofacial affinities to Pongo suggests both more diversity among Asian Late Miocene apes and more complex patterns of dispersal than previously tupposed. Major differences in the associated mammal faunas from the southern China sites and those from South and Southeast Asia are consistent with these findings and suggest more than one dispersal route of apes into East Asia earlier in the Miocene. The Kalatongke Cu-Ni sulfide deposit in the Paleozoic Altay orogenic belt, NW China, is hosted in a Permian mafic intrusion consisting of norite, troctolite, gabbro, and diorite. Disseminated Ni-Cu, massive Ni-Cu, and massive Cu-rich sulfide ores are mainly hosted in norite and gabbro. Some massive Ni-Cu ores also occur in the Carboniferous sedimentary rocks. The geologic and compositional relationships between various sulfide ores and the rocks of Kalatongke offer a new interpretation of the sequence of emplacement of the magmas, which underpins an understanding of die compositions of the ores and the formation of the Kalatongke deposit. Olivine grains from disseminated Ni-Cu ores have Fo values ranging from 71.6 to 78.0 mol 98 and Ni contents from 1.000 to 2,200 ppm. Typically, Ni decreases from the cores to the rims from 2.000 to 1,000 ppm at constant Fo content, indicating the reaction of early-formed olivine with later-segregated sulfide melt. Cr spinels at Kalatongke are highly enriched in Fe3+ and Fe2+, with relatively low Cr, Al, and Ti, reflecting reaction with evoked trapped intercumulus melt. Norites are depleted in Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, and Th and enriched in Sr and Ba, whereas disseminated Ni-Cu sulfide ores have considerable depletion of Kb and enrichment of Sr and Ba and lack depletion of Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf, indicating their different origins. Disseminated Ni-Cu sulfide ores have bulk compositions with variable Cu and Ni contents which are much lower than those of massive Cu-rich and Ni-Cu ores, but disseminated and massive Ni-Cu ores have similar PCE contents with relatively low Pd/Ir ratios. Massive Cu-rich ores have much higher Pd and Pt with very high Pd/Ir ratios. The Kalatongke Cu-Ni sulfide deposit appears to have formed from two different pulses of PGE-poor and Cu-rich basaltic magmas that underwent different degrees of assimilation and fractional crystallization. The first magma pulse gained sulfide saturation because of minor crystal contamination and fractionated a small amount of sulfide (<0.03%); the evolved melt then intruded and assimilated crystal materials to attain sulfide saturation again. Sulfide liquid segregated from the magma to form the massive sulfide melts and residual magma formed the noritic rocks in the shallow magma chamber. The segregated massive sulfide melts then underwent further fractionation to form massive Ni-Cu and massive Cu-rich ores. The second pulse of magma after removal of sulfides (<0.02%) experienced more crystal contamination and re attained S saturation. This new S-saturated and phenocryst-laden magma intruded the earlier formed massive sulfide ores and norites and formed the disseminated sulfide ores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Coastal wetlands are important land resources in Tangshan, including natural wetlands and artificial wetlands. Spatial form of wetlands is zonal distribution, contours approximately paralleling with the coastlines. The concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Ni were measured in surface and core sediments to determine their distribution characteristics and toxicity in the sediments of Lake Chaohu. The results revealed that metal concentrations in the surface sediments had a tendency to increase from the estuarine mouth to the lake center. The distribution characteristics of the five target metals were similar along the sediment profiles at each site. Principal component analysis revealed that all of the measured variables were loaded in the same component, indicating that there was a strong relationship among these measured variables, which was confirmed by the correlation analysis. Two sets of sediment quality guidelines (SQGs): simultaneously extracted metal (SEM) and acid volatile sulfides (AVS) models (including ∑SEM/AVS, ∑SEM-AVS, and ∑SEM-AVS/ f) and threshold effect level and probable effect level values were used to predict the sediment toxicity. Comparison of the results obtained using these two sets of SQGs revealed that only a small portion of the entire set was identical, while the majority of the results were different and sometimes completely contradictory. These contradictory results would cause a great deal of trouble for environment managers. Background. During March 2008, a college in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China, reported a measles outbreak, amid a city-wide outbreak involving >2700 cases. Methods. Suspected case patients were defined as patients with onset of fever (≥38°) and rash between 7 March and 30 April 2008. Probable case patients were defined as suspected case patients with >3 days of rash or known exposure to someone with laboratory-confirmed measles. Confirmed case patients were defined as suspected or probable case patients with Koplik spots or positive titer for immunoglobulin M antibody. We conducted a case-control investigation to identify risk factors for transmission. Results. We identified 162 suspected (attack rate, 1.9%), 99 probable, and 62 confirmed case patients. The epidemic curve indicated a point source initially, followed by person-to-person transmission. Approximately 63% of 90 probable case patients and 27% of 150 asymptomatic student controls randomly selected among classmates of student case patients visited internet cafés during the exposure period (odds ratio [OR], 4.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.6-8.0); 66% of case patients and 45% of student controls reported close contact with a measles case patient (OR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.3-3.9). In stratified analysis, visiting internet cafés (OR, 4.0; 95% CI, 1.5-11) remained significantly associated with disease, but contact with case patients (OR, 1.9; 95% CI, .79-4.4) became nonsignificant. Conclusions. This measles outbreak was transmitted in internet cafés, followed by secondary transmission. One coronavirus strain was isolated from brain tissues of ten piglets with evident clinical manifestations of vomiting, diarrhea and dyskinesia in Jilin province in China. Antigenic and genomic characterizations of the virus (isolate PHEV-JLsp09) were based on multiplex PCR and negative staining electron microscopy and sequence analysis of the Hemagglutinin-esterase (HE) gene. These piglets were diagnosed with Porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (PHEV). Necropsy was performed on the piglets. Major pathological changes included meningeal hyperemia, meningeal hemorrhage and cortical hemorrhage. Minor changes were also observed in other organs. Histopathological changes included satellitosis and neuronophagia in the cerebral cortex. Mice were infected with the isolated virus. Their histopathological changes were similar to those symptoms observed in the piglets, exhibiting typical changes for non-suppurative encephalitis. Thus, Porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus mainly causes damage to the nervous system but also impacts other organs. This viral strain (isolate PHEV-JLsp09) found in the Siping area of Jilin Province in China is evolutionally closest to the HEV-67N stain (North American strain), indicating that this viral strain evolved from the PHEV from North America. Myotonia congenita (MC) is a genetic disease characterized by mutations in the muscle chloride channel gene (CLCN1). To date, approximately 130 different mutations on the CLCN1 gene have been identified. However, most of the studies have focused on Caucasians, and reports on CLCN1 mutations in Chinese population are rare. This study investigated the mutation of CLCN1 in two Chinese families with MC. Direct sequencing of the CLCN1 gene revealed a heterozygous mutation (892G>A, resulting in A298T) in one family and a compound heterozygous mutations (782A>G, resulting in Y261C; 1679T>C, resulting in M560T) in the other family, None of the 100 normal controls had these mutations. Our findings add more to the available information on the CLCN1 mutation spectrum, and provide a valuable reference for studying the mutation types and inheritance pattern of CLCN1 in the Chinese population. The morphology, infraciliature, and small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequences of two new pleurostomatid ciliates, Epiphyllum shenzhenense n. sp. and Loxophyllum spirellum n. sp., isolated from a mangrove wetland near Shenzhen, South China, were investigated. Epiphyllum shenzhenense n. sp. is morphologically characterized by leaf-shaped cell about 150 × 35 μm in vivo, usually with four contractile vacuoles, 20–29 right kineties and 10–26 left kineties, ca. four macronuclear nodules, and two types of extrusomes (i.e. short spindle-shaped and long bar-shaped). As a new species, L. spirellum n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by its posterior dorsal margin twisted onto the left side, the distribution of extrusomes (evenly arranged along the oral slit, the posterior end, and clustered to 7–13 warts on dorsal margin), the subterminally positioned contractile vacuole, the number of kineties (8–10 on right side, 4–5 on left side), and its genetic distance from congeners. Phylogenetic trees based on the SSU rRNA gene sequence for both organisms were constructed, which indicate that Epiphyllum is a distinct genus and occupies a basal position in the Pleurostomatida clade; L. spirellum n. sp. falls well into the Loxophyllum clade, which has a close relationship with Litonotus and Spiroloxophyllum. Three-dimensionally preserved embryos from the Precambrian Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation, Weng'an. Guizhou, southern China, have attracted great attention as the oldest fossil evidence yet found for multicellular animal life on Earth. Many embryos are early cleavage embryos and most of them yield a limited phylagenetic signal. Here we report the discovery of two Doushantuo embryos that are three-dimensionally preserved and complex. Imaging techniques using propagation phase-contrast based synchrotron radiation microtomography (PPC-SR-μCT) reveal that the organization of cells demonstrates several bilaterian features, including the formation of anterior-posterior, dorso-ventral, and right-left polarities, and cell differentiation. Unexpectedly, our observations show a noticeable difference in organization patterns between the embryos, suggesting that they represent two distinct taxa. These embryos provide further evidence for the presence of bilaterian animals in the Doushantuo biota. Furthermore, these bilaterians had already diverged into distantly related groups at least 40 million years before the Cambrian radiation, indicating that the last common ancestor of the bilaterians lived much earlier than is usually thought. Background, aims, and scope China has been the largest primary magnesium producer in the world since year 2000 and is an important part of the global magnesium supply chain. Almost all of the primary magnesium in China is produced using the Pidgeon process invented in the 1940s in Canada. The environmental problems of the primary magnesium production with the Pidgeon process have already attracted much attention of the local government and enterprises. The main purposes of this research are to investigate the environmental impacts of magnesium production and to determine the accumulative environmental performances of three different scenarios. System boundary included the cradle-to-gate life cycle of magnesium production, including dolomite ore extraction, ferro-silicon production, the Pidgeon process, transportation of materials, and emissions from thermal power plant. The life cycle assessment (LCA) case study was performed on three different fuel use scenarios from coal as the overall fuel to two kinds of gaseous fuels, the producer gas and coke oven gas. The burden use of gaseous fuels was also considered. Methods The procedures, details, and results obtained are based on the application of the existing international standards of LCA, i.e., the ISO 14040. Depletion of abiotic resources, global warming, acidification, and human toxicity were adopted as the midpoint impact categories developed by the problem-oriented approach of CML to estimate the characterized results of the case study. The local characterization and normalization factors of abiotic resources were used to calculate abiotic depletion potential (ADP). The analytic hierarchy process was used to determine the weight factors. Using the Umberto version 4.0, the emissions of dolomite ore extraction were estimated and the transportation models of the three scenarios were designed. Results and conclusions The emissions inventory showed that both the Pidgeon process of magnesium production and the Fe-Si production were mainly to blame for the total pollutant emissions in the life cycle of magnesium production. The characterized results indicated that ADP, acidification potential, and human toxicity potential decreased cumulatively from scenarios 1 to 3, with the exception of global warming potential. The final single scores indicated that the accumulative environmental performance of scenario 3 was the best compared with scenarios 1 and 2. The impact of abiotic resources depletion deserves more attention although the types and the amount of mineral resources for Mg production are abundant in China. This study suggested that producer gas was an alternative fuel for magnesium production rather than the coal burned directly in areas where the cost of oven gas-produced coke is high. The utilization of "clean" energy and the reduction of greenhouse gases and acidic gases emission were the main goals of the technological improvements and cleaner production of the magnesium industry in China. Recommendation and perspective This paper has demonstrated that the theory and method of LCA are actually helpful for the research on the accumulative environmental performance of primary magnesium production. Further studies with "cradle-to-cradle" scheme are recommended. Purpose - The paper aims to test the rational-expectations hypothesis using data from the Chinese stock market. Design/methodology/approach - The rational-expectations hypothesis plays a critical role in economic and financial studies. However, it is unclear whether this hypothesis is consistent with real-world decision making since existing empirical results are mixed. This paper tests the hypothesis directly using survey data from China's stock market by developing a technique to analyze discrete or limited independent-variable models. Findings - The paper shows that in China's stock market survey forecasts are overly optimistic, especially with positive information, and can be improved slightly using past information. Originality/value - The paper develops a technique to analyze the discrete or limited independent-variable model. Background: Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (S. suis 2, SS2) is a major zoonotic pathogen that causes only sporadic cases of meningitis and sepsis in humans. Most if not all cases of Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) that have been well-documented to date were associated with the non-SS2 group A streptococcus (GAS). However, a recent large-scale outbreak of SS2 in Sichuan Province, China, appeared to be caused by more invasive deep-tissue infection with STSS, characterized by acute high fever, vascular collapse, hypotension, shock, and multiple organ failure. Methods and Findings: We investigated this outbreak of SS2 infections in both human and pigs, which took place from July to August, 2005, through clinical observation and laboratory experiments. Clinical and pathological characterization of the human patients revealed the hallmarks of typical STSS, which to date had only been associated with GAS infection. Retrospectively, we found that this outbreak was very similar to an earlier outbreak in Jiangsu Province, China, in 1998. We isolated and analyzed 37 bacterial strains from human specimens and eight from pig specimens of the recent outbreak, as well as three human isolates and two pig isolates from the 1998 outbreak we had kept in our laboratory. The bacterial isolates were examined using light microscopy observation, pig infection experiments, multiplex-PCR assay, as well as restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) and multiple sequence alignment analyses. Multiple lines of evidence confirmed that highly virulent strains of SS2 were the causative agents of both outbreaks. Conclusions: We report, to our knowledge for the first time, two outbreaks of STSS caused by SS2, a non-GAS streptococcus. The 2005 outbreak was associated with 38 deaths out of 204 documented human cases; the 1998 outbreak with 14 deaths out of 25 reported human cases. Most of the fatal cases were characterized by STSS; some of them by meningitis or severe septicemia. Using pathologic and virologic methods, we identified a novel type of fowlpox virus that carried an integrated genomic sequence of reticuloendotheliosis virus. The magmatic processes beneath the active continental margins are very complicated and affect structures and compositions of the arc roots. Neoproterozoic igneous rocks are widely distributed around the margins of the Tarim Block in NW China. The Xingdier mafic-ultramafic intrusion is a composite body, located at the northern margin of the Tarim Block, and consists of gabbro, pyroxenite, and peridotite units. The gabbro unit has a secondary ion mass spectrometry zircon U-Pb age of 727 ± 5 Ma. Rocks from the Xingdier intrusion have a large range of MgO (12.9--32.8 wt%) and SiO2 (43.0-57.9 wt%), and low K2O + Na2O (0.11-2.25 wt%) contents. They have right inclined chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns with (La/Yb)N ratios of 2.2-8.6. Their primitive mantle normalized trace element patterns show arc-affinity geochemical features characterized by enrichment in Rb, Ba, Th, U, and Pb and depletion in Nb, Ta, and Ti. They have variable initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7063-0.7093), εNd(t) values (-2.9 to -7.8), 206Pb/204Pb (17.08-17.80), 207Pb/204Pb (15.42-15.49), and 208Pb/204Pb ratios (37.48-38.05), forming an evolution trend from the peridotite unit to the gabbro and pyroxenite units. Clinopyroxene in the three units is chemically similar to those formed in hydrous magmas. The spinel inclusions in olivine from the peridotite unit show unmixing texture and have high Al contents and oxygen fugacity of ~FMQ+1. Therefore, the parental magma was probably derived from a lithospheric mantle enriched by slab-derived fluids. Rocks from the gabbro and peridotite units are proposed to have been derived from olivine-normative melts, whereas rocks from the pyroxenite unit are cumulates from the quartz-normative melts. Such contrasting parental magmas resulted from variable degrees of crustal contamination and fractional crystallization in the arc root. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
