The purpose of this systematic review is to further our understanding of women and educational leadership knowledge production from three Chinese societies and to contribute to the development of a more diverse global knowledge base in gender and educational leadership and management. A total of 341 articles were identified from 4 electronic databases. We conducted a systematic review of 24 eligible articles that focused on women and educational leadership in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, utilised empirical research designs and were published in peer-reviewed English-language journals between 2000 and 2021. This review synthesised six overarching themes, including the underrepresentation of women leaders in schools and universities; barriers for women's career advancement; impact of social-cultural contexts on gender-related leadership; gender stereotypes and gender dynamics; gender-based variation in leadership behaviours; and gender equity legislation and policies. The review reveals that underrepresentation of female leaders is a pervasive problem in both schools and universities across three Chinese societies. Substantial gaps still exist between policies and practices. The study highlights systemic barriers and lack of organisational enablers for women's career advancement. Introduction: Honor of Kings (HoK) is one of the most popular mobile games worldwide. To understand why players actively engage with digital games, it is essential to focus on their gaming motivations. However, no previous studies were found to have investigated the kinds and depth of players' motivations in this game. Moreover, the empirical research concerning the impact of stereotype threat and lift on players' motivations is scant. Thus, this pre-registered study aims to examine male and female players' gaming motivations in Honor of Kings and the effects of stereotypes on players' motivations. Methods: This study utilized Yee et al. (2012)'s motivational model. A 2 × 3 MANCOVA was performed for the outcome variables of achievement, social, and immersion motivations; with gender and stereotype activation (no activation, female, and male threat activation) as independent variables; and with age and gaming time as covariates (n = 421). Results: Contrary to prevalent perceptions, the results suggested females had higher achievement and immersion motivations, but lower social motivation than males in Honor of Kings. Unexpectedly, only females' immersion motivation was impaired under stereotype threat, and females demonstrated lower social motivation under stereotype lift. However, males were not affected by either stereotype threat or stereotype lift. Discussion: The results suggest that caution is needed for the assumption that male gamers are more achievement-oriented and females are more social-oriented because their motivations may vary depending on game genres. This study also found unexpected effects of stereotype threat and lift. Future research should further explore how to implement stereotype activation effectively to promote gender equality in gaming. Notably, this study only recruited participants from China due to the restrictions of recruitment channels. The term " wanghong women" has been in a state of flux in China's public discourse since its inception in 2015. In particular, the COVID-19, while causing major economic setbacks across the world, has, to some extent, boosted the growth of the wanghong industry and altered public attitude towards wanghong women in China. Against this background, this study aims to investigate how wanghong women are linguistically represented in the six leading official English language newspapers in China. A corpus-assisted discourse analysis of 156 English news articles (i.e., 140,931 words), covering the years between 2015 and 2022, was conducted. The study revealed a significant attitudinal shift in the editorial stance on China's wanghong women phenomenon since the COVID-19 epidemic: the semantic prosodies of the word " wanghong " has shifted from women who are stereotypically young, fashionable, and attract online attention by using pretty face and sexualized body shape to women who can boost the national digital economy, contribute to the state's agenda of rural regeneration, and help spread timely instructions regarding the pandemic. The findings shed new light on the evolving Chinese gender politics which is shaped by the entangled forces of traditional patriarchy, commercialization, and the government's crisis management strategies during the pandemic. This study explores the representation of gender through the social interactions presented in four sets of English textbooks used in China. By examining the representation of both gender stereotypes and changing roles, the results reveal that although traditional stereotypes exist in Chinese secondary school-level English textbooks, women's changing social roles are acknowledged in that they are now beginning to be shown engaging in non-traditional female jobs. However, in family scenarios, women are still depicted as taking sole responsibility for housekeeping duties without any participation from adult males, showing the incomplete transformation of gender roles. No male characters are shown participating in non-traditional jobs, which reinforces the idea of the masculine role being 'superior' to feminine or non-masculine roles. The continued presence of gender stereotypes shows textbook editors' tacit agreement with the gender norms. Drawing on gender as a fluid concept and social interactions of gender, this study acknowledges the variety and diversity of inputs of gender roles through social interactions in the learning community and suggests that students can be given access to a more gender-progressive education by improving the quality of social interactions between genders in textbooks and presenting a more equal view on gender roles. Do men incur a psychological cost when they are outperformed by a woman competitor? We conduct a laboratory experiment that allows us to measure this cost. The experiment is conducted in both the US and China. In our Chinese sample, men are willing to pay more to hide the fact that they have performed worse than another individual than women are, while there is no gender difference in the US. In China, women are willing to pay more to hide poor performance when losing to another woman than to a man, while in the US, the opposite pattern is observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sexual self-labeling refers to gay and bisexual men's preference for dominant (top) or submissive (bottom) sexual positions. This study examined influences of gender beliefs on sexual self-labeling identification and criteria for a romantic partner's sexual role, along with the related mechanism (N = 543). Gender beliefs were represented through gender roles attitude and gender values regarding couples. Individuals endorsing traditional gender beliefs and having high internalized homophobia were more likely to identify as tops. However, individuals with internalized stereotypical gender-roles were more likely to have fixed self-labeling (e.g. exclusively tops and exclusively bottoms) rather than flexible self-labeling (e.g. versatiles). Gender beliefs indirectly affected sexual self-labeling via internalized traditional gender-roles and internalized homophobia. Gender beliefs directly impacted requiring a partner to be complementary, and indirectly affected this element through internalized traditional gender-roles. The results demonstrate that gender beliefs affect sexual self-labeling identification and partner choice by way of internalized, stereotypical gender beliefs in relation to sexual self-labeling. This study implicated the heteronormative culture's influences on patterns in same-sex relationships among Chinese gay and bisexual men. Lay summary This study examined the influences of gender beliefs on self-labeling (top, bottom, and versatile) and partner choice in gay and bisexual men in China. Individuals endorsing traditional gender beliefs were more likely to identify as tops. Individuals endorsing the similar beliefs toward sexual roles were more likely to have fixed self-labeling (i.e., exclusively tops or bottoms) than flexible self-labeling (i.e., versatiles). The adage that "only Nixon could go to China" suggests hawkish leaders face fewer domestic political barriers to pursuing conciliation with foreign adversaries. Since hawks are viewed as less ideologically predisposed to peace than doves, their efforts at rapprochement are more likely to be perceived as in the national interest. We explore how this conventional wisdom intersects with prominent gender stereotypes about women's role in national security. Do gender stereotypes that women are inclined toward peace make it more difficult for women leaders to pursue conciliation? In a series of survey experiments, we find evidence of a gendered peace premium—a penalty women leaders face for pursuing peace. When women leaders seek rapprochement with foreign adversaries, they are perceived as acting "according to type." Consequently, women's conciliatory policy proposals are viewed as less likely to be in the national interest than identical policies pursued by male leaders. Partisanship dynamics significantly moderate the gendered peace premium, and policy success can attenuate women leaders' disadvantage. While this discriminatory dynamic does not make it impossible for women leaders to seek and achieve peace, it does make it more difficult and politically costly than some perspectives assume. Gender-stereotyped beliefs develop early in childhood and are thought to increase with age based on prior research that was primarily carried out in Western cultures. Little research, however, has examined cross-cultural (in)consistencies in the developmental trajectory of gender-stereotyped beliefs. The present study examined implicit gender–toy stereotypes among 4- to 9-year-olds (N = 1,013; 49.70% girls) in Canada, China, and Thailand. Children from all three cultures evidenced implicit gender–toy stereotypes over this developmental period, but cultural differences in the developmental pattern and strength of these stereotypes were apparent. Gender–toy stereotypes were relatively strong and stable across age groups among Thai children and relatively weak and stable across age groups among Chinese children. Canadian 4- to 5-year-old children displayed weaker stereotypes, whereas 6- to 9-year-olds displayed stronger stereotypes. These findings highlight the contribution of culture to children's gender stereotype development. Although gender–toy stereotypes were found among 4- to 9-year-olds in all three cultures examined here, the strength of these stereotypes varies by culture. Furthermore, the previously described increase in gender stereotyping over this developmental period appears to not apply across cultures, thus challenging the conventional view on development in this domain based on prior, mainly Western, research. Public Significance Statement: Children from three cultures, Canada, China, and Thailand, evidenced implicit gender–toy stereotypes from ages 4 to 9 years, but cultural differences in the developmental pattern and strength of these stereotypes were apparent. Our findings provide valuable data from two underrepresented non-Western cultures that challenge conventional wisdom—which has been predicated on Western samples—about the developmental course of gender stereotyping. Sports have traditionally had gendered connotations in society and culture, resulting in solidified gender stereotypes that influence impression evaluations. China has a special gender social culture; however, how sport–gender stereotypes (SGS) influence the gender evaluation of people in China in the Global South is still unknown. This study obtained gender-typed sports and attribute adjectives and proved the existence of SGS through a pilot study (392 college students, n1 = 207, n2 = 185) and then used two studies to explore the influence of both explicit and implicit SGS on evaluations and compared the differences between these stereotypes and general gender stereotypes. Study 1 (395 college students, n1a = 192, n1b = 203) examined the explicit level using a questionnaire experiment. The results of two experiments showed that (1) stereotype-consistent targets were more masculine or feminine in correspondence with their gender, while stereotype-inconsistent targets had higher anti-gender traits; and (2) the inclusion of stereotype-consistent sports activities led targets to be evaluated as more masculine, while stereotype-inconsistent sport activities showed gender evaluation reversal, especially for women. Study 2 (103 college students, n2a = 61, n2b = 42) measured the implicit attitudes using the Implicit Association Test. The results of two experiments showed that (1) implicit evaluations of stereotype-consistent targets were associated faster than stereotype-inconsistent targets and (2) the inclusion of gender-typed sports weakened implicit gender evaluations. In conclusion, this is the first quantitative study to explore the unique effect of SGS on individual evaluations and how they differ from general gender stereotypes in the Chinese context. Female entrepreneurship activities in China encounter a unique informal institutional situation – Confucian culture favouring masculinity. Drawing on Social Role Theory and Gender Role Congruity Theory, we explore whether and how Confucian culture affects female entrepreneurship. Using 20,531 entrepreneurs' data from Chinese Private Enterprise Survey over the period of 2002–2014, we find that Confucian culture is negatively associated with female entrepreneurship. In addition, gender stereotypes based on Confucian patriarchal ideology have a partial mediation effect in this relationship. Further analysis demonstrates that managerial experience might be a potential way for women to achieve entrepreneurial breakthroughs in these adverse conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Across many cultural contexts, the majority of women conduct the majority of their household labor. This gendered distribution of labor is often unequal, and thus represents one of the most frequently experienced forms of daily inequality because it occurs within one's own home. Young children are often passive observers of their family's distribution of labor, and yet little is known about the developmental onset of their perceptions of it. By the preschool age, children also show strong normative feelings about both equal resource distribution and gender stereotypes. To investigate the developmental onset of children's recognition of the (in)equality of household labor, we interviewed 3 to 10-y-old children in two distinct cultural contexts (US and China) and surveyed their caregivers about who does more household labor across a variety of tasks. Even at the youngest ages and in both cultural contexts, children's reports largely matched their parents', with both populations reporting that mothers do the majority of household labor. Both children and parents judged this to be generally fair, suggesting that children are observant of the gendered distribution of labor within their households, and show normalization of inequality from a young age. Our results point to preschool age as a critical developmental time period during which it is important to have parent-child discussions about structural constraints surrounding gender norms and household labor. Portrayed by the media as the story of "how a female PhD juggles intimate relationship with four male PhD academics", the LM incident, named after the female main character of the story, was a high-profile case, which provoked public debates on Chinese social media in 2019. In this article, we explore how the stereotyping of female PhDs plays out in Chinese Internet users' discussions about the LM incident. We collected a total of 632 relevant posts from the most popular Chinese community question-answering (CQA) site – Zhihu and analysed them by drawing on critical discourse analysis (CDA). The research findings reveal how a sexualised portrayal of female PhDs, which is dramatically "different" from the traditional, asexual stereotypes of well-educated women, is established in Zhihu users' postings. Many Zhihu users, including both women and men, mobilise an overwhelmingly sexualised portrayal of female PhDs, which speaks to the normalisation of patriarchal discourses in the status quo of Chinese academia and beyond. This article investigates the emergence of "erotic entrepreneurs" in China, a new category of male influencers who engage in erotic activities and target followers of all genders on platforms such as TikTok/Douyin and Bilibili. Through ethnographic research, we examine how these young individuals strategically marketize their private and intimate experiences as a form of aspiration and commerce. We use Foucault's concept, "docile bodies," to interrogate how these erotic entrepreneurs navigate the power and knowledge systems of the creative economy. We argue that the paradoxical position of these docile male, queer bodies helps to increase their visibility on one hand, whilst renders them vulnerable to exploitation, censorship, and commodification on the other. The findings suggest that this paradox disrupts traditional gender stereotypes and the underlying power structures, but also reinforces the neoliberal and patriarchal order specific to postreform China. This study investigated visual arts college students' perceptions of the gender stereotyping of creativity and the influence of this stereotyping on creative self‐efficacy. The sample consisted of 1198 Chinese visual arts college students. The results showed that (a) both male and female students identified stereotypically masculine traits as more important to creativity than stereotypically feminine traits are, (b) male students demonstrated higher creative self‐efficacy than their female counterparts did, and (c) students' gender significantly moderated the effect of the gender stereotyping of creativity on creative self‐efficacy. Specifically, the gender stereotyping of creativity had a positive effect on male students and a negative effect on female students. These findings revealed that gender stereotypes dominate concepts of creativity in Chinese art education and may hinder female students' development of creative self‐efficacy, resulting in gendered inequality in the visual arts field. As an important resource and tool for college Portuguese teaching and learning, textbooks contain rich cultural concepts to a certain extent, among which gender culture is also deeply embedded in the textbooks and influences Portuguese students' perceptions of gender roles. This paper presents an empirical study that is based on a comparative analysis using the illustrated characters of four current college Portuguese textbooks, both local and introduced edition as the object of analysis to investigate the gender roles in these textbooks. By building a research framework that covers six dimensions of analysis: a) the number of male illustrations, female illustrations, and male and female illustrations; b) the number of male and female characters in the illustrations; c) the emotions of the male and female characters in the illustrations; d) the occupations of the male and female characters in the illustrations; e) the activity scenes of the male and female characters in the illustrations; f) the specific activities of male and female characters in the illustrations, we found that there is an imbalance of gender roles in the four introduced edition and local Portuguese textbooks, the findings suggest that the construction of gender culture in future Portuguese textbooks should pay attention to give balanced treatment to male and female characters and break down the gender stereotypes not only in the linguistic term but also visual and pictorial. Academic gender stereotypes contribute to observed gender differences in educational enrollment and attainment. Investigating parents' stereotypes among 907 families in China, this study used exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to uncover four latent factors: boys-Math, boys-Sciences, girls-Chinese, and girls-Liberal Arts stereotypes. The former two depicted boys as more gifted, enthusiastic, and higher-achieving learners in Math and Sciences, and the latter two favored girls in Chinese and Liberal Arts. This four-factor structure was invariant across parents with sons and daughters after accounting for the nonindependence of parents within families. The boys-Math and boys-Sciences stereotypes were found to be stronger than the other two stereotypes. Further analyses revealed nuances concerning the boys-Math stereotype: it was more pronounced among mothers than fathers in families with daughters, fathers with sons than daughters, and girls' mothers without college degrees than those with degrees. Within the same family, mothers more commonly held stereotype-consistent perceptions concerning Math and Chinese than fathers, but there was a general agreement over gendered perceptions of all four achievement domains regardless of child gender. The findings highlight the need for family-based awareness-raising programs targeting parents' gender stereotypes to create gender-fair and gender-inclusive learning environments. Individuals voluntarily internalize gender stereotypes and present personality characteristics and behaviors that conform to gender role requirements. The aim of the current study was to explore the reasons people internalize gender stereotypes. We conducted surveys with 317 college students in China to examine the relationship between gender self-stereotyping and life satisfaction. We also analyzed the mediating roles of relational self-esteem (RSE) and personal self-esteem (PSE) and the moderation role of gender. The results of path analysis showed that gender self-stereotyping directly affected life satisfaction and indirectly affected life satisfaction through RSE and PSE in a serial pattern; however, the serial mediation model was only significant in the male sample. Higher gender self-stereotyping was associated with male participants' higher level of RSE and PSE and further correlated with higher life satisfaction. This study addressed the questions: "What are the benefits of gender self-stereotyping?" and "What are the major barriers to counter-stereotyping?" The results enrich our understanding of these issues, especially relative to the collectivist culture in China, and may be used to create more effective interventions to help people break through the stereotypes. Introduction: This study investigated gender differences in the reading behaviors of Chinese middle school students, and whether gender stereotypes relating to choices of reading matter are supported., Methods: A mixed-methods approach was adopted. Three thousand nine hundred and fifteen middle school (Grade 7) students completed a questionnaire designed to assess reading behaviors. Independent sample t-test and chi-square analyses were employed to examine gender differences in reading behaviors. The qualitative survey was supplemented with an open response survey (94 boys, 50 girls), which provided further insights into individuals' specific experiences and perspectives regarding reading behaviors and gender stereotypes in reading choices., Results: This study revealed a number of gender-linked differences. Boys spent more time reading than girls but read the same number of books; boys were also more likely than girls to read digital texts, while girls were more likely to borrow their reading material. Choice of subject matter also differed: boys were more likely to read factual and action-based books, while girls' choices focused more on motives and emotions. Another significant difference was that boys paid more attention to the overall experience of reading, while girls paid more attention to the details of reading. Responses to the open response survey indicated that gender stereotypes in reading choices were prevalent among respondents, but some students' reading choices did not align with the stereotype associated with their gender., Conclusion: The mixed-methods approach proved valuable in both identifying gender differences in reading behaviors, and in highlighting the prevalence of gender stereotypes in reading choices among middle school students., (© 2024 Foundation for Professionals in Services to Adolescents.)

Background: Nowadays, more and more women are engaging in entrepreneurial activities. Meanwhile, female entrepreneurs' health problems have been increasingly reported worldwide. What factors would influence female entrepreneurs' health are the subject of this paper.Methods: This paper focuses on the effects of entrepreneurial experience and age of firm on female entrepreneurs' health through the analysis of 2 years of tracking data in the Bohai Economic Rim, which is one of the most developed areas for entrepreneurial activities in China.Results: Results from the samples of female entrepreneurs demonstrate that increasing entrepreneurial experience and growing firm age could help female entrepreneurs to activate multiple positive identities. These identities can help female entrepreneurs cope with gender stereotype threat and maintain good health.Conclusion: This paper contributes to entrepreneur health research in two aspects. First, this study focused on entrepreneurial history indexed by entrepreneurial experience and firm age, enriching the field of female entrepreneurship. Second, this study further explored the mechanism that women cope with stereotype threat in the context of entrepreneurship. The increasing number of female students in China has contributed to reducing the gender gaps in tertiary education over the past decades; however, the debate about gender inequality in tertiary education is ongoing. This study examines how the slogans on the banners for Girls' Day celebrations from 2018-2020 on university campuses in mainland China convey male students' willingness to provide help and support for the perceived academic issues faced by female college students, while surreptitiously conveying gender stereotyping and intelligence quotient (IQ) prejudice in the current university campus culture. These slogans occupy a prominent position on campus and help to evaluate the perceptions of both male and female college students regarding these issues. Data were gathered from semi-structured interviews with 16 undergraduate students at two universities. The analysis revealed that female IQ bias based on gender stereotyping is an enduring issue, which has been unintentionally inherited from previous generations of Chinese college students. The article reveals that despite the increased number of female college students, "benevolent discrimination" against women still exists in various forms in the campus culture and gender roles have not transformed much. Feminist translation scholars have addressed a number of translation and gender issues since the 1980s; nevertheless, their strong political agenda has come under heavy criticism. Consequently, recent decades have seen a growing number of scholars involved in the study of translation and gender beginning to look beyond this early feminist perspective to approach gender-related issues. The present study follows this line of thought to examine how stereotypes against women are articulated in a well-known misogynist text, Shuihu Zhuan, a novel rooted in the social values of traditional Confucian Chinese culture, and more importantly, how translators bridge the language and cultural divide when trying to deal with such stereotypes. Through a descriptive comparison of the original misogynist text and one of its modern English translations from between the 1960s and 1970s, the study reveals how the translator has a wide range of options at their disposal to negotiate and temper the extreme patriarchal gender stereotypes of feudal China for a foreign readership less inclined to accept ethnic, racial or sexual discrimination. This analysis may inspire further studies in regard to the impact of gender issues on translation and how best to bridge differences in gender ethics across languages and cultures. The body of literature on underrepresentation and gender inequality is vast. However, despite its potential to perpetuate gender stereotypes, the overrepresentation of women in media has received inadequate attention. This study explores how traditional news media and social media overrepresent females as drivers when discussing traffic accidents, and whether social media could be the 'new equalizer' for gender. Focusing on China, we collected 97,120 posts from Weibo, China's largest microblogging site, and 11,290 newspaper articles dated between January 2010 and November 2018. We analyzed the data through a mixed-methods design and found that female drivers are overrepresented in discussions of traffic accidents, in both newspapers and on Weibo. While the gender bias against female drivers is more prevalent on Weibo than in newspapers, Weibo has provided a platform for gender-aware discussion. Understanding kind and hostile communicative intentions that are conveyed by others is essential for successful human interaction. However, it still remains unknown whether gender differences exist in understanding others' social interactive intentions, especially behind their body movements. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the gender effects in understanding kind and hostile intentions (versus neutral intention) displayed by two actors (or actresses) and their body movements. We recruited 60 participants from a university in China and recorded the accuracy and reaction times when participants performed an intention inference task. Significant main effects of the gender on accuracies were found. The results showed female observers performed better than males on accuracy of intention inference task. The outcome also indicated observers exhibited higher accuracy of understanding intentions for actors than actresses. Moreover, the results indicated higher accuracy and shorter reaction times for understanding hostile intention than those for kind intention. In addition, there was an interaction effect between the gender of actor/actress and intention conditions on reaction times. In particular, the reaction times for understanding actors' kind intentions was longer than those for actresses; whereas the reaction times for understanding hostile intentions showed a reverse pattern. In conclusion, the evidence demonstrated that behavioral processing underlying social intention understanding differs with different types of communicative intentions, which was also moderated by the gender of the actors/actresses. This paper explores the impact of gender on the employment of men in early childhood education and care (ECEC) centres through the voices of male and female early childhood teachers (ECTs) working in China. Gender imbalance in the ECEC workforce is a global phenomenon, and there has been little research about it in countries such as China. This study was based on online interviews with 16 ECTs from three major cities in China. Findings indicated that ECTs’ perceptions conformed largely with traditional gender stereotypes in Chinese culture. Western expectations that men’s participation in ECEC could challenge traditional gender stereotypes and promote gender diversity were not reflected in either Chinese academic literature reviewed or the participants’ views captured in this research. This paper explores the vocal authority of Chinese female rock singers’ voices as semiotic and cultural rebellion against male-dominated rock aesthetics and the accepted sounds of women’s singing in popular music. The first of the paper’s two sections challenges the gendered stereotypes associated with female singers, and argues for the artistic significance embedded in the voice to set the exploration of subversive femininities, and, more importantly, to unveil the polysomic cultural and social making process of a distinctive personal voice. The second and longest section of the paper first creates theoretical dialogues regarding Potter, De Certeau, Shepherd and Barthes’ theories of voice and culture, and then presents the case analysis of three prominent Chinese female rocker singers, Zhang Qianqian, Wu Hongfei and Kang Mao. The analysis discusses distinctive “feminine noise” by excavating the cultural and institutional forces embedded in the vocal styles of these singers. The semiotic features of grain, timbre, articulation and volume in the voice demonstrate how the complex acoustic soundscape of “feminine noises” reveals the regional, ethnic, class and sexual formation of female musicians’ gender identity. Since the introduction of stand-up comedy into contemporary China, young Chinese comediennes have become an active part of the comedy scene. As an annual stand-up comedy show for new generation comedians, Rock & Roast provided an excellent platform for young female comedians to break the gender barrier of traditional language performance art, giving birth to outstanding female stand-up comedians including Yang Li and the Yan Twins, igniting a new wave of feminist thinking. Contrary to the more active feminist movements in the West, stand-up comedy performances featuring female topics serve as a negotiated form of feminist expression. Using humor and satire as a medium, comedy works as the new means for the dissemination and further emancipation of feminist thought in China. Although their humorous expressions are still limited by gender stereotypes and patriarchal gazes, their courageous voices will still make a historic contribution to Chinese women's further struggle for women's rights and gender equality. Young children tend to categorize people and objects to understand their environments, but under certain circumstances, they can also appreciate individual differences. Three studies investigated how young children use categorical and individuating information to make social judgments. In Study 1, 3- to 5-year-old children (N = 33; 18 boys, 15 girls) predicted hypothetical peers' preferences for toys along a spectrum from highly stereotyped for girls to neutral to highly stereotyped for boys. Hypothetical peers were described by gender and as enjoying activities that were stereotypical, counter-stereotypical, or unrelated to gender. Children's choices were consistent with use of the provided individuating information rather than gender alone. In Studies 2 and 3, we retested these ideas with preschool samples from the United States (N = 44) and China (N = 21) respectively and also asked children about their toy, playmate, and activity preferences. For both samples, responses followed the same pattern as Study 1 for social judgments and were characterized by preferences for same-gender peers and neutral or gender-typed toys and activities, particularly in girls. While young children express preferences consistent with gender identity, they process and use individuating information in making social judgments, a capacity that could be targeted by interventions designed to reduce the development of gender-based bias. Global evidence demonstrates that inequitable gender norms negatively influence key health outcomes (e.g., violence, HIV/STI), and the importance of male involvement in prevention efforts. The China Family Planning Association and PATH partnered to develop and evaluate a gender-focused behavior change communication intervention for HIV and violence prevention. Eight participatory education sessions—adapted for the Chinese setting—were implemented in factories and schools. Baseline and endline surveys with participants (219 male factory workers and 496 male vocational students) were conducted. Support for (in)equitable norms was measured by the Gender Equitable Men Scale, as well as partner violence and communication. Focus groups with male and female workers/students, teachers, and factory managers were used to corroborate findings. At baseline, many workers and students supported inequitable gender norms, with workers generally being more inequitable. At endline, significant positive changes in gender-related views (e.g., reduction from 42% to 18% of workers agreeing that “a woman should tolerate violence in order to keep her family together”) and behaviors (e.g., reduction from 15% to 7% of students reporting partner violence over the past 3 months) were reported. Does a board with greater gender diversity make better investment decisions? Drawing on Austrian economic cycle theory and work groups theory, we argue that such board openness will help male board members to overcome gender biases, discrimination, and conflicts; integrate different perspectives under the economic cycle and crisis; and foster an environment in which better decisions are made. The results of an empirical study of 14,609 firm-quarter observations from 1,555 listed firms in China between 2007 and 2009 strongly support our arguments. We find that a Chinese board is more likely to accept female directorship during an economic crisis than during an economic prosperity stage. Boards with greater gender diversity are more likely to make tough, counter-cyclical investments to improve firm performance during a crisis. Our study enriches the board decision-making literature by exploring the impacts of board gender diversity on firm performance within the context of an economic crisis. Our study is the first study to explore the transformation of Chinese gender stereotypes over a thirty-year period. Based on the field research conducted in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, People's Republic of China, and supplemental data in Shanghai, Beijing, and Nanjing, we examine the way men and women's supposed "essence" has been objectified in folk ideology to form a cognitive or ideal model of gender. We argue that there is a decline in the 1980s chauvinistic model of masculinity that centered around a simplistic dichotomy of wén (scholarly)/wŭ (oriented toward bold action); whereby masculinity is associated with a presumption of superiority and contempt toward women to a newer form of masculinity organized around a blend of wén and wŭ cultural traits that highlight confidence, decisiveness, politeness, and a cool demeanor, along with a heightened respect for females. This article seeks to investigate whether the improvement of the status of women in Hong Kong in recent decades, effected through various efforts to promote the values of equal opportunity concepts, is reflected in patterns of gender representation in primary school textbooks used in Hong Kong. A comparison of a popular series of primary school English-language textbooks that was published in 2005 with the same series published in 1988 (12 books in total) revealed increase in gender equity in the more recent books, including increased visibility of women both visually and textually. Nevertheless, the findings also revealed a perpetuation of some stereotyped images of the two genders and portrayals of women in a more limited range of social roles than men. The ‘male-first’ phenomenon and the visual and textual under-representation of women were still prevalent in the contemporary textbooks. This research explores gender stereotypes that existed in gift purchasing and giving within the Chinese context. A qualitative approach combined with a projective method was adopted to examine the narrative data collected. All the respondents for this research are Chinese female consumers, who provide a unique perspective to study gender stereotypes. Through interpreting the narrative story and sentence completion questions collected from the respondents, cultural values and gender stereotypes indicated by the data were analyzed. Then the research explores gender differences, masculinity, and femininity in gift purchasing and giving behavior based on the same cultural values-collectivism, high context, and masculinity-embodied by both genders. Teacher-child interactions and peer exchanges were observed once a week for 10 months in four kindergartens in Hong Kong, China. A total of 206 anecdotes/scenes considered representative of the gender-related experiences of 109 4-year-old Chinese children in these kindergartens were analyzed. Descriptive codes, generated iteratively were clustered, categorized, integrated, recoded and recategorized and led to the identification of two major themes related to the socialization practices of teachers: Gendered Kindergarten Routines and Perpetuation of Gender Stereotypes. Findings indicated that these early years' educational contexts were not gender neutral. Teachers interacted with boys significantly more than girls. They also subtly conveyed traditional Chinese gender values through their repeated use of gendered routines in the kindergartens and their behaviors reflected gender stereotypes. In Asian societies, the sexual abuse experiences of male victims are rarely studied due to social gender role stereotype, which enforces the discourse that men are supposed to be tough and impossible to be hurt, and not to report sexual abuse. This research examines the life journey of 12 sexually abused male survivors in Hong Kong to explore their struggles. Results show: firstly, male survivors are caught in shame and excitement when talking about their abusive incidents. Shamefulness leads some of them to have negative self-esteem while excitement makes some of them addicted to sexual activities or even become homosexual; secondly, they feel insecure to tell others about it after being abused, because of masculinity identity; thirdly, relationship building is always hard for them since they do not know how to maintain distance with the others. Abstract: Background: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2470152 of the gene CYP19A1 is associated with serum estradiol (E2) levels in Caucasian men. However, it remains to be verified if rs2470152 is the sole determinant accounting for the association. We determined whether 2 CYP19A1 SNPs tagging different haploblocks (rs2470152 and rs2899470) are associated with sex steroid levels in Chinese men. Method: Serum sex steroid level including E2, estrone (E1) and testosterone (T), of 1402 Chinese men aged ≥65years were analyzed. Genotyping of the two CYP19A1 SNPs was performed using T m-shift allele-specific PCR. Results: SNP rs2899470 was significantly associated with serum E2, E1 levels and E2/T ratio (p <0.001). However, SNP rs2470152 was only modestly associated with E2/T ratio (p =0.023). Analysis of haplotype showed a significant association between C-G, T-T haplotype with serum E2/T ratio (p =0.019 and p =1×10−5, respectively). Similarly, E2 levels was also associated the T-T and T-G haplotypes (p =1×10−5). Conclusion: The genetic variation of CYP19A1 was associated with circulating estrogen levels in Chinese elderly men. In addition, it revealed that haplotype of rs2899470 and rs2470152, rather than rs2899470 alone, was a better indicator for the serum E2/T ratio and E2 levels. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Sex-role stereotypes exist as a primary source of gender inequality in employment. This issue becomes even more salient in the social context of China, where the traditional view of female inferiority persists and the legal system provides inadequate protection of equal employment rights. Reporting a content analysis of Chinese recruitment advertisements, this article concludes that gender discrimination is practiced by Chinese employers in recruiting for white-collar positions. • Girls were rated higher than boys in language aptitude, affect, and achievement. • The stereotypical female lead in aptitude was smaller than in affect/achievement. • Girls and senior students had stronger stereotypes than boys or junior ones. • Priming female-language stereotypes impaired boys' subsequent test performance. In various societies, language domains are stereotypically associated with females. Yet, few studies have investigated the exact content of such female-language stereotypes, or whether they lead to stereotype threat effect among language learners. A questionnaire was distributed to 1,165 learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) from eight high schools in China, and participants were found to stereotypically regard female learners more positively in three aspects of English learning: aptitude, affect and achievement. Compared to boys or junior students, girls and more senior ones had stronger stereotypes. A subsequent field experiment was conducted on 427 students from a ninth school, revealing that priming female-language stereotypes prior to an English test impaired boys' performance when English competence was controlled for. The studies suggest that male EFL learners were adversely portrayed and affected by the female-language stereotypes. The relationship between sex role stereotypes and characteristics perceived as necessary for management success was examined among 361 male and 228 female management students in Japan and the People's Republic of China. The results revealed that males and females in both countries perceive that successful middle managers possess characteristics, attitudes and temperaments more commonly ascribed to men in general than to women in general. These results were compared with previous studies done in the U.S., Great Britain and Germany, using the same Schein 92-item Descriptive Index, and similar samples and procedures. The comparison supports the view that 'think manager—think male' is a global phenomenon, especially among males. Regardless of country context, there was a strong and similar degree of managerial sex typing among male management students in all five countries. Among females, the managerial sex typing hypothesis was confirmed in every country except the U.S., in which men and women are seen as equally likely to possess requisite management characteristics. Unlike those of their male counterparts, the females' pattern of outcomes varied across countries, possibly a reflection of their respective opportunities for managerial participation. The article investigates cross-cultural similarities in gender-role stereotypes between Anglo-Australians and Chinese immigrants in Australia. The cultural differences in gender roles usually develop in two different ways. First, the conception of masculine and feminine gender roles may be different for different cultures. Second, the conception of masculinity and femininity might be similar in some cultures but in some cultures. Males and females from the same culture are expected to be close together, except for those from Australia and mainland United States, where the same gender groups are believed to be more similar to each other than their counterparts from the same culture. Females have higher relationship orientation/femininity values than males, while males have higher instrumentalism/masculinity values than females. Both genders were strongly showing masculine values/traits if they were Anglo-Australian in background, and with feminine values/traits if they were of Chinese origin. The Anglo-Australian people have more of both the relationship orientation/femininity and instrumentalism/masculinity characteristics.
