Anthropogenic climate warming is predicted to increase the intensity of global tropical cyclones (TCs) on decadal timescales, known as the 'temperature-TC intensity' paradigm. However, no proxy is currently available to directly quantify TC intensity in the northwestern Pacific region over centennial to millennial timescales. Here, we reconstruct the intensity of past TCs inferred from event-beds detected in two sedimentary systems in eastern China spanning approximately 1910 to 645 yr BP using an instrumental-calibrated technique, thereby encompassing a sufficiently wide range of temperatures to test the paradigm in the time domain. Intriguingly, our two intensity indices, based on flooding depth and wind speed, provide the initial quantitative evidence that TC intensity in eastern China has been anomalously weak since around 1485 ± 45 yr BP, with a reduction of approximately 30 ± 8% in intensity, despite no concurrent temperature shift. This reduction appears to have been pre-conditioned by a combined influence of a weaker El Niño-Southern Oscillation, a stronger Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and an increased level of Saharan dust. We suggest that the magnitudes of these factors may have crossed a tipping point and have not reverted to their pre-shift levels since that time, resulting in their impact on TC intensity exceeding that of temperature by triggering changes in the oceanic and atmospheric state within the tropical Pacific region where TCs originate. Measuring the landscape pattern from a three-dimensional perspective is of great significance for comprehensively revealing the complex spatial characteristics of island ecosystems. However, the archipelago composed of rocky islands has received little attention as its three-dimensional landscape characteristics are difficult to quantify. This study took the largest archipelago in China, the Zhoushan Archipelago, as the study area and constructed an island landscape pattern evaluation model from a dual-three-dimensional (dual-3D) perspective. The model divided the island into upper and lower layers, namely the surface landscape based on topography and the landscape elements above the surface (i.e., vegetation and buildings), and then evaluated their landscape patterns from a three-dimensional perspective, respectively. The landscape pattern model based on a dual-3D perspective and multiple scales achieved excellent results in the archipelago. First, the island landscape pattern was evaluated from three-dimensional perspectives, including human interference, landscape fragmentation, vegetation space, and building space. Second, landscape indices such as the human interference three-dimensional index (HITI), the landscape fragmentation three-dimensional index (LFTI), the vegetation three-dimensional index (VTI), and the building three-dimensional index (BTI) established at multiple spatial scales revealed spatial heterogeneity within and between islands. Environmental factors such as elevation, slope, and island area exhibited significant correlations with them. There were significant differences in landscape pattern indices between the two-dimensional (2D) and the three-dimensional (3D) perspectives, and high values were mainly distributed in areas with significant topographic changes and larger islands. In addition, as the evaluation unit increased, the landscape indices increased, and HITI became more responsive to the transitions from 2D to 3D, while LFTI was the opposite. Therefore, the multiscale landscape pattern measurement of China's largest archipelago based on high-resolution remote sensing was carried out from three-dimensional perspectives to accurately reveal the spatial heterogeneity. Mao Jian Tea (MJT) has been generally consumed as a digestive aid for more than a hundred years in the Shanxi province of China. However, determination of its efficacy still remains elusive. This study investigated the effect of Mao Jian Green Tea (MJGT) on gastrointestinal motility. The biphasic effects of the hydro extracts of MJGT on gastric emptying and small intestinal propulsion of rats were identified in vivo; namely, the low (MJGT_L) and medium (MJGT_M) concentrations promoted gastrointestinal motility (p < 0.05), whereas the high concentration (MJGT_H) showed the opposite effect (p < 0.01). The expression levels of the gastric hormones, GAS, MTL and VIP (p < 0.05) were consistent with the gastrointestinal motility variation, with the exception of MTL in MJGT_H group (p > 0.01). Two flavonoids, eriodictyol (0.152 mg/mL) and luteolin (0.034 mg/mL), and the corresponding glycosides eriodictyol-7-O-glucoside (0.637 mg/mL) and luteolin-7-O-glucoside (0.216 mg/mL), dominated the hydro extracts identified by HPLC and UPLC-ESI-MS. These compounds can regulate the muscle strip contractions isolated from the gastrointestinal tissues. Additionally, the different concentrations also influenced the gut microbiota accordingly characterized by 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The MJGT_L boosted several probiotic bacteria, such as Muribaculaceae (1.77-fold), Prevotellaceae (1.85-fold) and Lactobacillaceae (2.47-fold), and suppressed the pathogenic species such as Staphylococcaceae (0.03-fold) that, conversely, was enriched in the MJGT_H group (1.92-fold). Soil quality of coastal wetlands plays an important role in maintaining biological productivity, improving environmental quality, and promoting plant and animal health. Landscape pattern is the major factor affecting variations in soil quality of coastal wetland. However, the influence of landscapes on spatial variations in soil quality has not been fully explored in coastal wetlands with highly fragmented landscapes. Here, we established a composite indicator of soil quality of coastal wetland, used a series of analysis methods to explore the spatial characteristics of soil quality of coastal wetland and the intrinsic relationships between soil quality and landscape factors, and quantified the landscape factors affecting the spatial variation of soil quality. Chongming Island, a typical estuarine island coastal wetland in China, was selected as the study area. The results showed that coastal wetland soil quality had distinct spatial variations, and significant correlations were observed between soil quality indicators and landscape factors. Key landscape factors, including distance to coastline (DTC), distance to human-related landscape types (DTH), number of landscape types (NLT), natural index of landscape (NIL), number of landscape patches (NLP), total edge of landscape patches (TELP), net primary production (NPP), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), soil salinity index (SSI), and normalized difference build-up and bare soil index (NDBSI), were identified and quantified at the optimal spatial evaluation units. Among the landscape types, woodlands and farmlands showed better soil quality and landscape conditions in coastal wetlands. Among the landscape pattern factors, landscape function factors, rather than composition and structure factors, had a greater impact on the spatial variation of coastal wetland soil quality. The soil quality was good at positions with high DTC and NDVI and low DTH and SSI. These findings highlighted that landscape factors NDVI (19.93%), SSI (15.93%), DTC (15.28%), and DTH (11.16%) contributed the most to the spatial variation in soil quality on Chongming Island. Instrumental records reveal that intense tropical cyclone (TC) activity varies with tropical sea surface temperature (SST) on annual-decadal scales. Drivers of intense TC activity at the centennial-millennial scale are less clear, due to the sparseness of pre-observational reconstructions. Here, we present a new 2 kyr continuous activity record of intense TCs from offshore eastern China. Our reconstruction indicates that this site witnessed enhanced TC activity during relatively warm periods, with a widespread increase in TC activity during the later part of the Little Ice Age. This latter observation reveals that enhanced TC activity was synchronized with increased Asian dust emissions during the Little Ice Age. TC activity was also lower in the late Roman Warm Period, when SST was higher but Asian dust emissions were lower than in the early phase. Such patterns suggest a centennial-millennial link between TC climatology and a combination of SST changes and Asian dust levels. Here, the authors show that enhanced tropical cyclone activity was synchronized with increased Asian dust emissions during the Little Ice Age, implying a mechanism linking tropical cyclone climatology to Asian dust levels, at 100 to 1000 year scales. Crop yield stability and soil mineral nitrogen (Nmin) have rarely been evaluated from a long-term perspective in the extremely arid cropland regions of China. Therefore, a nationwide experiment aimed to optimize fertilizer application and increase productivity and nitrogen use efficiency in gray desert soils was initiated in 1990. Eight combinations of chemical fertilizers (CK, N, NK, NP, and NPK), straw return (NPKS), and manure amendments (NPKM and NPKM+) were tested for 24 years on spring wheat, winter wheat, and maize. The results displayed that the yield of three crops from balanced fertilizer treatments (NPK, NPKS, NPKM, and NPKM+) did not differ significantly after 24 years; however, reliable yield stability due to lower coefficient of variation (CV) and higher nitrogen harvest index (NHI) were recorded for manure amendment treatments. Compared to NPKM, NHI was lower for the NPKM+ treatment, but crop yield and stability did not improve, suggesting that the appropriate choice for manure amendment is important for guaranteeing food security in extremely arid regions. Balanced fertilizer treatments resulted in lower Nmin residual in the 300 cm soil profile, compared to unbalanced fertilizer treatments. The NPKS treatment gave the lowest value. In the 0–100 cm soil profile, Nmin was higher in NPKM than in the NPK treatment, suggesting that straw or manure amendment can effectively maintain Nmin in the topsoil undercurrent cropland management in arid areas. The NPKM treatment had the highest crop nitrogen recovery rate and the lowest nitrogen losses, further illustrating that manure amendment has higher N retention potential. Overall, although Nmin residues are relatively high in these regions, balanced fertilizer treatments, especially NPKM and NPKS, are the optimum strategies in extremely arid regions. River‐dominated marginal seas are important carbon sinks on Earth. However, their carbon sequestration capacities are changing due to increased anthropogenic perturbations. Herein, we employ substantial datasets to study the characteristics of organic carbon (OC) from the East China Sea (ECS) in 2006 and 2018 and reveal the impacts of reservoir construction on the OC deposition in this region. We show that the distribution of sedimentary OC in the ECS is primarily controlled by riverine input and seabed erosion processes. Hydrodynamic processes influence the OC deposition due to both the scouring of fine‐grained sediments and selective degradation of OC associated with the sediment mobilization. The deposition flux of OC in the ECS decreased by 48% after reservoir construction. These findings demonstrate that reservoir construction seriously affected the OC deposition in the ECS and may be applicable to river‐dominated continental shelves worldwide. Although extreme weather events make a strong impact in shallow marine sedimentary environments, there is still a paucity of past records for the Holocene period. Estuarine-inner shelf mud regions deposited from rivers that transport a large amount of suspended sediment represent an important archive of the Holocene. Two cores (S5-2 and JC07) retrieved from the estuarine-inner shelf regions of the East China Sea provided an opportunity to use sensitive grain size and 210Pb dating to reconstruct a history of extreme weather events in the Yangtze River basin. Here, we show that the average sedimentation rates of the two cores, S5-2 (1930–2013) and JC07 (1910–2013), were estimated to be 3.11 and 1.56 cm/yr, respectively. The results indicated that sediment supply played an important role in sedimentation of the estuarine-inner shelf mud region of the East China Sea. Sand content strongly increased in the late 1980s, a result of downstream riverbed erosion of the Yangtze River and submerged deltas. The grain size versus the standard deviation method was used to identify grain-size intervals with the highest variability along a sedimentary sequence. The Yangtze estuary mud area coarse population correlated well with historical literature on Yangtze River floods since AD 1930. Extreme storm events corresponded well with historical literature on the Zhe-Min mud region of the East China Sea. The spectral analyses of the sample core coastal population demonstrated that flood and storm events were consistent with a ~3–8 a periodic change of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), suggesting that the flood events usually follow ENSO years in the Yangtze River. Consequently, sediment records preserved in the two cores demonstrated different sedimentary responses to Yangtze River floods and storms, which is important to recover centennial scale flood events, to infer extreme precipitation, and to understand climate change in the estuarine-inner shelf of the East China Sea. Total suspended particulate matter (TSM) in estuarine and coastal regions usually exhibits significant natural variations. The understanding of such variations is of great significance in coastal waters. The aim of this study is to investigate and assess the diurnal and seasonal variations of surface TSM distribution and its mechanisms in coastal waters based on Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data. As a case study, dynamic variations of TSM in the macro-tidal Yalu River estuary (YRE) of China were analysed. With regard to diurnal variability, there were usually two peaks of TSM in a tidal cycle corresponding to the maximum flood and ebb current. Tidal action appears to play a vital role in diurnal variations of TSM. Both the processes of tidal re-suspension and advection could be identified; however, the diurnal variation of TSM was mainly affected by a re-suspension process. In addition, spring-neap tides can affect the magnitude of TSM diurnal variations in the YRE. The GOCI-retrieved TSM results clearly showed the seasonal variability of surface TSM in this area, with the highest level occurring in winter and the lowest in summer. Moreover, although river discharge to the YRE was much greater in the wet season than the dry season, TSM concentrations were significantly higher in the dry season. The Pu activities and Pu/Pu atom ratios were analyzed using a double-focusing SF-ICP-MS for sediment core samples obtained in 2007-2008 from the North Jiangsu tidal flats in the Yellow Sea in China. Particular attention was focused on the Pu/Pu atom ratios in the sediment to identify the origins of Pu isotopes. The profiles of Pu activities in the sediment cores are similar to those of the Cs activities. The Pu/Pu atom ratios in the tidal flats showed typical global fallout values, indicating that this area did not receive the possible early direct close-in fallout or oceanic current transported Pu from the Pacific Proving Grounds (PPG). If any, the contribution of the PPG source Pu to the total Pu inventory is negligible. This is different from the sediments in the Yangtze River estuary in the East China Sea, where the PPG source Pu contributed ca. 45 % to the total inventory. In addition, the observation of the global fallout origin Pu in the North Jiangsu tidal flats indicated that the nuclear power plant in the region was not causing any alteration/contamination to the Pu/Pu atom ratios. The Pu and Cs activities/inventories in the sediment cores showed correlation to the mean clay sediment compositions (fine particles) in the tidal flats. Therefore, mud deposits are served as sinks for the anthropogenic radionuclides in the tidal flats and the Yellow Sea. Integrated with the previously reported spatial distributions of Pu and Cs activities in the surface sediments of the Yellow Sea, the mechanism of Pu transport with the ocean currents and the scavenging characteristics in the Yellow Sea were discussed. Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is an important minor cereal crop in China. The yellow color of the de-husked grain is the most direct aspect for evaluating the foxtail millet quality. The yellow pigment mainly includes carotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin) and flavonoids. To reveal the diversity and specificity of flavonoids in foxtail millet, we chose three high eating quality and two poor eating quality varieties as research materials. A total of 116 flavonoid metabolites were identified based on Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS/MS) system. The tested varieties contained similar levels of flavonoid metabolites, but with each variety accumulating its unique flavonoid metabolites. A total of 33 flavonoid metabolites were identified as significantly discrepant between high eating quality and poor eating quality varieties, which were mainly in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway and one of its branches, the flavone and flavonol biosynthesis pathway. These results showed the diversified components of flavonoids accumulated in foxtail millets and laid the foundation for further research on flavonoids and the breeding for high-quality foxtail millet varieties. • It is essential to utilize diverse sources of observational data for the validation of long-term morphological simulations. • The multiple underlayer settings of the Delft3D model enable its acquisition of decadal bed layer stratigraphy. • Wind and waves sort sediment based on grain size, smoothing out morphological changes induced by tides. • Sea level rise significantly influences regions characterized by intricate morphological features. • Radial sand ridges form under a radial regime with low tidal ellipticity, abundant sand, and minor cohesive sediment. The tidal sand ridges in the southwestern Yellow Sea are unique in the world characterized by radial morphology, significantly higher elevation above low water level, and fine-grained sediment deposits. Using a numerical model, we examined the morphological evolution of the radial sand ridge system from 1979 to 2059. The model was calibrated and validated using hydrodynamic and sediment transport data, seabed topography, and grain size distributions from sediment cores. Our findings reveal that tidal force is the primary driver of the ridges' evolution, and they will continue to expand in response to sediment supply from the abandoned Yellow River delta and the Yangtze delta, with the latter contributing more. The ridges are mainly composed of fine sand and mud, with finer sediment dominating in the north and coarser sediment dominating in the south. Wind and waves sort sediment, depositing sand on ridges and fine sediment in channels, leading to erosion of higher elevated lands and filling of deep channels. Sea-level rise increases regional erosion, which has a large impact on areas with complex morphology. The 500-year morphological evolution of sand ridge systems, simulated through an idealized model, illustrated that the formation of radial sand ridges is dependent upon specific conditions such as the radial tidal regime, sufficient sediment sand, and the presence of cohesive sediment. This study deepens our understanding of the long-term prediction of coastal morphology and interpretation of seabed stratigraphy, and offers insights for effective coastal management. Cross-front transport is a vital process in the offshore transport of terrestrial materials. The factors influencing cross-front transport are multifaceted and exhibit regional variability. As important factors regulating material transport patterns in the shelf seas of eastern China, the East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM) and Kuroshio current (including its branches) vary on multiple time scales, yet their role in controlling offshore transport is not fully understood. In this paper, cross-front offshore transport in the North Yellow Sea is chosen to investigate the aforementioned issue using numerical simulation. By excluding other potential processes for offshore transport, frontal instability is identified as the primary mechanism for offshore transport, which is triggered by winter storms (bursts of the EAWM); hence, the intensity of offshore transport is highly associated with the strength of winter storms on synoptic scales. However, on the inter-annual scale, the intensity of offshore transport is more likely regulated by the strength of the Kuroshio current, and a warming Kuroshio facilitates offshore transport. Although the role of each factor in controlling the intensity of offshore transport is delineated, the interactive effects of the EAWM and Kuroshio current on offshore transport are quite intricate, and how to quantitatively estimate their roles on multiple time scales remains a challenge using modelling. The results obtained from this study can be applied to analyse cross-front transport throughout the eastern China seas and bear significant implications for future studies on pollutant diffusion, nutrient distribution, and sediment transport in the coastal area. • Cross-front transport around the Shandong Peninsula was revealed using a numerical model. • EAWM and Kuroshio affect the strength of cross-front transport on different time scales. • With global warming, the temperature of Kuroshio might gradually become the primary control of cross-front transport. The East China Shelf Sea (ECSS) is subject to high-frequency storms during winter and spring, with these storm processes serving as a significant driving factor for initiating the outward diffusion of materials from the inner shelf. Inner shelf waters tend to be rich in nutrients, thus their horizontal diffusion is crucial to the marine primary productivity of the outer shelf. However, our understanding of the processes that govern the offshore water mass transport under winter storm oscillations and the mechanisms driving their impact on phytoplankton is currently limited. In this study, we used satellite and reanalysis data from 2003 to 2020 to investigate the modulation mechanism of winter offshore currents (WOC) on phytoplankton bloom (PB) stimulated by storms in Northern Taiwan (NTW). The results revealed that at synoptic scales, winter storms result in higher sea surface height (SSH) and potential energy on the inner side of the front. However, during periods of weakened storms (for example, during north wind relaxation or a shift to southerly winds), a strong WOC is produced in the top 30–50 m of the ocean due to continuous SSH adjustments caused by changed pressure gradients and induced by topography. PB occurs in the offshore waters of the front, driven by a continuous nutrient supply and an increase in photosynthetically available radiation (PAR). On an interannual scale, offshore transport is controlled by the storm's duration and the extent of its weakening. As the climate warms and winter winds in NTW have consistently weakened over the past 20 years, lower turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and a shallower mixed layer depth (MLD) will promote phytoplankton growth. The results suggest that water level fluctuations caused by high-frequency changes in winter storms are strongly linked to the offshore sediment transport from near-shore waters, impacting the material transport and the health of the ecosystem on the continental shelf. While terrigenous materials tend to be limited to the inner shelf by coastal fronts in the shelf seas of eastern China, they could still be transported to offshore regions when coastal front is disturbed by winter storms. However, the offshore transport process is still poorly understood because its variation does not have close relation with strength of wind storms. In this study, we took offshore transport in the North Yellow Sea (NYS) as an example to explore the determining factor for amount of offshore transport. The results show that offshore transport in the NYS is positively correlated with the strength of the Kuroshio Current and its branch recorded in water temperature on a millennial scale, but is rarely influenced by winter storms, which is also supported by the instrumental data on interannual and monthly scales. By analyzing modern hydrological and meteorological data, we found that the variation of offshore suspended sediment transport with interannual and monthly scales is controlled by the variation of horizontal density gradient, which supports the possible mechanism underlying the millennial scale variations in sediment core data. One possible mechanism dominating the flux of offshore transport is that the increasing density difference across the coastal front is conductive to cross-front exchange when the frontal instability is triggered. • The variation of offshore transport with millennial time scale has high consistency with the offshore water temperature. • The decadal variation of offshore suspended sediment spreading is regulated by the horizontal SST gradient. • The offshore spreading of coastal materials might increase in future if the global warming continues. Understanding of bottom sediment erodibility is necessary for the sustainable management and protection of coastlines, and is of great importance for numerical models of sediment dynamics and transport. To investigate the dependence of sediment erodibility on degree of consolidation, we measured turbidity, waves, tidal currents, intratidal bed-level changes, and sediment properties on an exposed macrotidal mudflat during a series of tidal cycles. We estimated the water content of surface sediments (in the uppermost 2 cm of sediment) and sub-surface sediments (at 2 cm below the sediment surface). Bed shear stress values due to currents ( τ c ), waves ( τ w ), and combined current–wave action ( τ cw ) were calculated using a hydrodynamic model. In this study, we estimate the critical shear stress for erosion using two approaches and both of them give similar results. We found that the critical shear stress for erosion ( τ ce ) was 0.17–0.18 N/m 2 in the uppermost 0–2 cm of sediment and 0.29 N/m 2 in sub-surface sediment layers (depth, 2 cm), as determined by time series of τ cw values and intratidal bed-level changes, and values of τ ce , obtained using the water content of bottom sediments, were 0.16 N/m 2 in the uppermost 2 cm and 0.28 N/m 2 in the sub-surface (depth, 2 cm) sediment. These results indicate that the value of τ ce for sub-surface sediments (depth, 2 cm) is much greater than that for the uppermost sediments (depth, 0–2 cm), and that the τ ce value is mainly related to the water content, which is determined by the extent of consolidation. Our results have implications for improving the predictive accuracy of models of sediment transport and morphological evolution, by introducing variable τ ce values for corresponding sediment layers, and can also provide a mechanistic understanding of bottom sediment erodibility at different sediment depths on intertidal mudflats, as related to differences in the consolidation time. This study analyzed the characteristics and the bearing capacity of water surge disasters in Boao Bay, a typical estuarine lagoon. The Danish Hydraulic Institute's (DHI's) MIKE 21 modeling suite was used to numerically simulate the water surges from flood, storm, and combined flood and storm processes. The results show that, in Boao Bay, the peak water surge level caused by the combination of flooding and storm surges is very similar to the level caused by flooding or storm surges alone. Additionally, the storm surge bearing capacity is much greater than the flood bearing capacity. When there is only one entrance, the bay's flood bearing capacity increases with the entrance width, but when the entrance width exceeds 550 m, the flood bearing capacity stabilizes rapidly. However, opening an additional entrance to the south can further increase the flood bearing capacity. Based on hydrometeorological forecasts, this study suggests that the risk of water surge disasters can be reduced by proactively modifying the shape of the entrance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: To examine the historical depositional environment with the evolution of vegetation at tidal flats, sediment samples were collected and grain-size distribution, 137Cs and 210Pb characteristics, heavy metals content, stratigraphy and the vegetation information were measured at Linhong and Chongming Dongtan tidal flat in China. Sediment grain size parameters exhibited transitional lines of the unvegetated flat to the vegetated flat. The vertical profiles of the 137Cs and 210Pbex reflected different depositional environment at the tidal flats. The linear/slumps profiles of 210Pbex indicated complex hydrodynamics or rapid changes in sediment supply. The maximum peaks of 137Cs activity were observed in some cores. The sedimentation rates from the 137Cs maximum deposition peaks in 1963–1964 were comparable with the results from the 210Pbex-CRS (Constant Rate of Supply) method. Positive relationships between the average activities of 137Cs, 210Pbex, inventory of 210Pbex and the mean clay composition, suggested that grain size control effect was an important factor to influence the characteristics of 137Cs and 210Pb distribution at the tidal flats. For heavy metals, only Hg, Cd and Cr were moderately polluted at the Linhong tidal flat and the Chongming Dongtan, respectively. Integrating the results above and the stratigraphy, the vegetation introduction historical information, the clearer sedimentation evolution processes of the tidal flats were reconstructed, which is necessary for the coastal zone management and the pollution evaluation. Coastal currents play a key role in regulating alongshore sediment transport, and their relationships with winter storms (burst of the East Asian winter monsoon) and formation of the coastal mud deposits on the eastern China shelf have been established, based on which the evolution of the East Asian winter monsoon has been widely explored. Unlike that of coastal deposits, the formation of offshore deposits on the eastern China shelf is very complex and highly debated, leading to enormous challenges on paleoclimate reconstructions based on these deposits. In this study, cross-front sediment transport under a variable Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC) was explored using remote sensing imagery and sedimentary records (seismic profile and sediment grain size) from the North Yellow Sea (NYS). The results indicate that, although the offshore mud deposit in the western NYS is formed by winter storms through triggering cross-front transport of coastal sediment around the Shandong Peninsula, the winter storm signal was completely obscured by that of the YSWC, which might determine the flux of cross-front sediment transport on a millennial scale. The 1500 y sub-orbital climate variability cycle could also be observed in distal muds after 2.8 ka. By comparing the sediment composition within the same mud deposit or between adjacent mud deposits in the NYS, we found that the response of cross-front sediment transport to the YSWC varied spatially, which may be a reason for discrepancies observed in previous winter monsoon reconstructions on the eastern China shelf. Therefore, as indicated by this study, offshore deposits on the eastern China shelf are not suitable for inversions of the winter monsoon. In addition, mud deposits on the eastern China shelf are also dramatically affected by other dynamic factors, including typhoons and river flooding; thus, deeply exploring the dynamic characteristics and formation mechanism of these deposits are prerequisites for paleoclimate reconstruction. • In NYS mud deposits, the winter storm signal was completely obscured by the YSWC on a millennial scale. • The 1500 y sub-orbital climate variability cycle may be recorded in distal muds through regulating cross-shelf transport. • Complex ocean dynamics on the continental shelf are likely responsible for discrepancies in previous paleoclimate studies. Abstract: This paper focuses on the hydrodynamic and suspended sediment transport processes in response to sequential reclamations over the intertidal flat, Jiangsu coast, which used to be one of the widest intertidal flats in China. Investigations into the sediment transport patterns reveal that net suspended sediment fluxes increased from 102 kgm−1 on the upper intertidal flat to 103–4 kgm−1 on the lower intertidal flat, per tidal cycle. This variation was caused mainly by the phases of the current velocity, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), local bed geomorphology, inundation patterns, and extreme weather conditions. The longshore component of tidal currents intensifies seaward over the intertidal flat. Extreme weather conditions (e.g. storms) and strong winds were important factors affecting the current velocity structures, the intensity of residual currents, and the SSCs. The SSCs were characterized by several peaks throughout the tidal cycle. These peaks were associated with strong currents, combined wave-current interactions and intense turbulences due to the initial flood surge. Furthermore, the suspended sediment was finer and contained more clay materials during the flood phase of the tidal cycle, than during the ebb. Fine particles were transported within the upper water column by landward residual currents, but coarse particles were transported within the lower water column by seaward residual currents. Overall, residual currents were apt to transport fine-grained sediment landward and coarse-grained sediment seaward. This pattern indicates that the suspended sediment fluxes are highly variable in the water column, even for very shallow tidal environments. The cross-shore component accounted only for a small percentage of the total sediment flux. However, this part of sediment supply dominated accretion over the intertidal flat. The intertidal flat has become narrower and steeper, following sequential reclamations. A negative feedback process existed to maintain the convex profile shape, although the human activities (i.e. reclamation) could have modified the natural process. The surficial sediment tended to become finer on the mid-upper intertidal flat but coarser on the lower intertidal flat following reclamations, in response to a reduction in the tidal currents over the intertidal zone and enhancement of wave action over the lower intertidal flat. Accretion, with high rates, was maintained by landward transport of sediment. In such an accretional system with influences of reclamation, the width or slope of the intertidal flat is adjusted continuously. The flocculation process of cohesive sediment impacts upon estuaries and tidal flats by affecting the sediment dynamics, modifying the biogeochemical exchanges, and playing an essential role in coastal ecosystems and geomorphologic evolution. To understand the roles of biological activity on flocculation processes in aquaculture areas, here we undertook in situ measurements over a bare tidal flat and a nearby clam aquaculture mudflat on the Jiangsu coast, China. Near-bed in situ floc size, the grain size distribution of suspended particles in seawater, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), and currents were obtained for nine consecutive semidiurnal tidal cycles simultaneously at the two sites. Correlation analysis indicated that the flocculation and its break-up process in this study appeared to be controlled by the variations in SSC and bottom shear stress due to combined wave and current. The floc sizes showed less difference between the two sites under calm conditions. However, the near-bed in situ floc size in the aquaculture mudflat was 23% larger than that in the bare tidal flat in the severe erosion events, suggesting modulation of the flocculation process due to the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) eroded from the seabed sediments at the aquaculture site, as the hydrodynamics were very similar between the two sites. A higher EPS content was observed in the sediment layer below the surface seabed at the aquaculture site. Climate change and human activity have exerted significant influences on the sediment load and channel morphology of the Changjiang River system, China. However, our knowledge of their influence on flood regime on the centennial to millennial timescales remains limited, and this is mainly because of the difficulty in directly determining the long-term hydrological variability of the Changjiang River over the period before hydrological gauges were established. Based on multiproxy analysis that combines chronological, sedimentological, and geochemical analysis of a 4.8-m-long sediment core retrieved from the subaqueous delta of the Changjiang River, this study establishes a flood history for the Changjiang River during the late Holocene. Our palaeoflood reconstruction revealed 14 multi-decadal periods of extreme floods (19–66 BCE, 25–80, 255–350, 415–475, 550–710, 740–835, 970–990, 1080–1130, 1170–1235, 1275–1390, 1440–1500, 1560–1730, 1810–1830, and 1950–2011 CE). These flood units match well with the observed large floods, documentary records of floods, and sedimentary flood deposits, confirming that the coarse units in the sequence are flood-derived and are regionally representative. Comparing with regional and global palaeoclimate records indicates that major flood events of the Changjiang are strongly modulated by the Asian summer monsoon and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), but that anthropogenic impacts (e.g. artificial channelization and land clearance) have also greatly amplified the flooding frequency over the past 600 yr. • We report a history of extreme flood events on the Chanjiang River over the past 2000 yr. • Periods of increased extreme flood activity in the Changjiang River typically coincide with El Niño periods and weak EASM phases. • Human modifications have greatly amplified flood activities in the Changjiang River over the past 600 yr. • Ecological importance and tenacity were proposed to represent the specialty of islands. • Two new indices, EII and ETI, were used to quantify the importance and tenacity, respectively. • The combination of EII and ETI provided an effective method to conduct island protected area zoning. • The optimum scheme of island protected area zoning could be obtained using the method. • Targeted island protected area zoning greatly contributes to the island sustainable development. Island protected area zoning is highly significant for maintaining the biodiversity and achieving the island sustainable development. Ecological importance and tenacity were proposed in this study for the island protected area zoning. The ecological importance was composed of three components, namely, landscape, soil, and vegetation; the ecological tenacity was evaluated based on the ecological importance and considering three types of influences, i.e., anthropogenic, topographic, and marine influences. Two new indices, namely, ecological importance index (EII) and ecological tenacity index (ETI), were established, and remote sensing and field data were integrated to serve as the data source and realize the spatial exhibitions. Then, the island protected area zoning was conducted based on the spatial distributions of EII and ETI, and six schemes for different protection and development purposes were designed. An island chain in Dongtou Archipelago in South China was used as the study area. Results indicated that the ecological importance and tenacity showed spatial heterogeneities across islands and within the islands. The islands with higher proximities to the mainland and larger areas generally possessed lower ecological importance and tenacity. Of the six schemes, Scheme B was the recommended scheme because of its reasonable area assignments for different protected areas, the optimum compatibility with island uses, and the balance of protection and development. The demonstration of the method validated the advantages of the EII and ETI in revealing the spatial characteristics of island ecological importance and tenacity, as well as the effectiveness of the method in the island protected area zoning. Riverine processes are crucial for the biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg). The Yangtze River, the largest river in East Asia, discharges a substantial amount of Hg into the East China Sea. However, the influencing factors of the Hg budget and its recent trends remain unclear. This study quantitatively analyzed the total Hg concentration (THg) in suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Yangtze River and calculated the Hg budget in 2018 and 2021. The results showed that the total Hg concentrations varied substantially along the river, with concentrations ranging from 23 to 883 μg/kg in 2018 and 47 to 146 μg/kg in 2021. The average Hg flux to China Sea in 2018 and 2021 were approximately 10 Mg/yr, lower than in 2016 (48 Mg/yr). Over 70% of the SPM was trapped in the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), and 22 Mg/yr of Hg settled in the TGD in 2018 and 10 Mg/yr in 2021. Hg fluxes in the Yangtze River watershed were driven by various factors, including decreased industrial emissions, increased agriculture emissions, and decreased soil erosion flux. We found that in the upper reach of the Yangtze River changed from sink to source of Hg possibly due to the resuspension of sediments, which implies that the settled sediments could be a potential source of Hg for downstream. The study of island development suitability can provide important reference for island ecosystem-based management and sustainable development, as well as technical foundation for land development suitability evaluation and spatial planning in other areas. In this study, two typical China's archipelagos, namely, Miaodao Archipelago and Dongtou Archipelago, were selected to demonstrate the study. The carrying capacities of the three major development types, that is, ecological conservation, agricultural production, and urban construction, served as basic data; the controlling factors of island development suitability were identified in aspects of terrain, sea, and soil, and their influences on the three development types were separately measured in the two archipelagos and on different types of islands; and the island development suitability index (IDSI) was established for each of the three development types. Then, four schemes, namely, Schemes A-D, were designed based on the IDSIs and for purposes of free development, ecological conservation, agricultural production, and coordinated development, respectively, to conduct the island functional zoning, and the optimum scheme was finally selected. The results indicated that the influence natures and degrees of controlling factors showed distinct spatial heterogeneities across different archipelagos and across different types of islands within the same archipelago. Area proportions of the planned zones varied in different schemes for different purposes, and the optimum scheme was generated by assigning Schemes A, B, C, and D to the reclamation areas within the islands, the uninhabited islands, the sandy island, and the remaining islands, respectively. The present study validated two hypotheses: First, the factual influences of controlling factors on the land development suitability varied across different areas and might not be in accordance with the empirical cognitions. Water conservation areas play an important role in regional ecological security patterns. The Funiu Mountain water conservation area is located in the densely populated central region of China, where human disturbance to the ecosystem is strong and ecosystem services are facing a very serious situation. Identifying and evaluating the factors leading to changes in the ecosystem service value (ESV) of the Funiu Mountain water conservation area can provide scientific guidance for ecological management and sustainable development. Using multi-source data and machine learning methods, our research reveals the characteristics of the spatio-temporal variation in the ESV, constructs a system of ESV influencing factors from the comprehensive perspectives of the natural environment and human activities, and discusses the comprehensive effects of the influencing factors on the Funiu Mountain area from 2000 to 2015. The results are as follows. (1) From 2000 to 2005, the ESV increased 375 million yuan, and from 2005 to 2015, it decreased 154 million yuan. (2) Hydrological regulation, biodiversity maintenance, soil conservation, gas regulation, and climate regulation were the main types of ecosystem services in the Funiu Mountain area. (3) The ESV was influenced by the comprehensive effects of the natural environment and human activities. Population was the most important influencing factor of the ESV; in addition, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), precipitation, and economic factors had important influences on the ESV. (4) With the intensification of human activities, humanistic factors have surpassed the relatively stable natural factors, becoming the main factors of the ESV. With economic development, the effect of human activities on the ESV may be further intensified in the future.

Background: Late blight disease (LBD) caused by the pathogen Phytophthora infestans (PI), is the most devastating disease limiting potato (Solanum tuberosum) production globally. Currently, this disease pathogen is re-emerging and appearing in new areas at a very high intensity. A better understanding of the natural defense mechanisms against PI in different potato cultivars especially at the protein level is still lacking. Therefore, to elucidate potato proteome response to PI, we investigated changes in the proteome and leaf morphology of three potato cultivars, namely; Favorita (FA), Mira (MA), and E-malingshu N0.14 (E14) infected with PI by using the iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomics analysis., Results: A total of 3306 proteins were found in the three potato genotypes, and 2044 proteins were quantified. Cluster analysis revealed MA and E14 clustered together separately from FA. The protein profile and related functions revealed that the cultivars shared a typical hypersensitive response to PI, including induction of elicitors, oxidative burst, and suppression of photosynthesis in the potato leaves. Meanwhile, MA and E14 deployed additional specific response mechanism different from FA, involving high induction of protease inhibitors, serine/threonine kinases, terpenoid, hormone signaling, and transport, which contributed to MA tolerance of LBD. Furthermore, inductions of pathogenesis-related proteins, LRR receptor-like kinases, mitogen-activated protein kinase, WRKY transcription factors, jasmonic acid, and phenolic compounds mediate E14 resistance against LBD. These proteins were confirmed at the transcription level by a quantitative polymerase chain reaction and at the translation level by western-blot., Conclusions: We found several proteins that were differentially abundant among the cultivars, that includes common and cultivar specific proteins which highlighted similarities and significant differences between FA, MA, and E14 in terms of their defense response to PI. Here the specific accumulation of mitogen-activated protein kinase, Serine/threonine kinases, WRKY transcription played a positive role in E14 immunity against PI. The candidate proteins identified reported in this study will form the basis of future studies and may improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of late blight disease resistance in potato.

Marine sediment is the final sink of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from river input and atmospheric deposition. Such kind of pollutant cycles in the marine environment is usually controlled by hydrodynamic conditions. Many previous studies have explored how ocean currents influence pollutant distribution, but very few studies have focused on the relationships between the distribution patterns of pollutant and residual currents or sediment transport. In this study, 16 monomers of PAHs from 135 surface sediment samples collected in the Hangzhou Bay, a typical macrotidal bay, were systematically identified and their sources were analyzed. The sediment characteristics and distribution pattern were also comprehensively analyzed. The results showed the seabed sediments were moderately polluted by PAHs with a level of 38.58-1371.06 ng/g (median 186.70 ng/g). Most of the PAHs are composed of three to five rings, originated from combustion of coal and firewood. The combustion of oil also contributes to PAHs in seabed sediments for some areas. The PAHs are found to be concentrated within the estuary and the offshore areas, as well in coastal ocean. Fine-grained sediment transport is controlled by residual currents, which leads to PAH accumulation in the bay and the offshore areas, forming a high-value distribution pattern. Hence, we conclude that residual current is the main factors that control the long-term distribution of PAHs in the seabed sediments of the macrotidal bay. Temporal and spatial varying models of PAHs were needed in a further study to explore further the mechanisms how PAHs are transported in coastal areas.

Human-induced catchment changes have affected the sedimentary processes in marginal seas, which will impact the transport and burial processes of materials and inevitably impact marine biogeochemical cycles. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and sediment characteristics in surface sediments from the East China Sea (ECS) at two time points (2006 and 2018) were compared to understand the response of OCPs to human-induced catchment changes. A significant coarsening trend occurred after the impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), with the mean grain size increasing from 6.4 ± 1.2 Φ to 4.4 ± 2.1 Φ, suggesting that the sedimentary environment in the ECS changed drastically. OCP concentrations in the ECS evidently decreased after the impoundment of the TGD, with mean values decreasing from 2.55 ± 1.51 ng g -1 to 1.08 ± 0.84 ng g -1 . The deposition flux of OCP also decreased from 2.65 ± 1.67 ng cm -2 yr -1 to 0.89 ± 0.60 ng cm -2 yr -1 . The reduction in the riverine input might be the reason that caused variations in the OCP concentration and deposition flux. In addition, sediment coarsening is likely to be the another primary factor influencing the differences in the distribution and deposition flux of the OCPs in the ECS. The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in two 210 Pb-dated sediment cores collected from mud deposits along the southeastern coast of the Liaodong Peninsula were investigated to reconstruct the sedimentary records of PAHs and their relationship with anthropogenic and natural activities. The concentrations of 16 PAHs (∑PAHs) were low and remained stable before the year 1820, reflecting an autarkic agricultural civilization. From 1820 to 1900, with the gradual lifting of prohibition, people migrated into Northeast China, resulting in the release of large amounts of ∑PAHs into the environment. At the beginning of the 1900s, the ∑PAH levels in the two cores displayed increasing trends with significant fluctuations, linked to a period of social turbulence with continuous wars in Northeast China. After 1949, vertical ∑PAH trends in the cores predominantly reflected trends in economic development. Based on the different PAH composition trends (2-3-ring and 4-6-ring PAHs), we consider that historical energy usage in Northeast China can be divided into three stages: biomass fuel use dominated before 1920, biomass and fossil fuels co-existed from 1920 to 1980, and fossil fuels dominated after 1980. Plantago major L. grows in a very wide range of regions in China and exhibits great variations among populations. The analysis of the cuticular-wax composition provides a potential approach to classify populations of P. major confronting different environmental conditions. Twelve populations of P. major and five populations of P. depressa Willd., distributed over regions with average annual temperatures ranging from -2.0 to 18.4°, were sampled, the variation of the composition of their cuticular waxes was analyzed, and their values of average chain length (ACL) and carbon preference index (CPI) were calculated. Great intra- and interspecies variations were observed for the total wax contents. The average annual temperature of the habitats was significantly correlated with the relative contents of the dominant n-alkanes with an odd number of C-atoms, but not with the wax contents. With an increasing average annual temperature, the relative contents of n-alkanes C29 and C31 decreased, whereas those of C33 and C35 as well as the values of ACLtotal and ACL27-33 increased. Cluster analysis based on the pattern of the n-alkane distribution allowed to clearly separate the populations of P. major according to the average annual temperature of their habitats, but not to separate the populations of the two species. Hence, the pattern of the n-alkane distribution might be a good taxonomic marker for P. major at the intraspecies level, but not at the interspecies level. Background: Unsafe practices during illegal plasma donation in the late 1980s and early 1990s spread bloodborne infections in central China., Methods: A cross-sectional survey of a random sample of 538 adult residents of 12 villages in rural Shanxi Province, where there had been an illegal commercial plasma-collection center, was conducted in 2003. Structured questionnaires were administered, and blood samples were tested for hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies., Results: HCV seroprevalence rates were 8.2% in all subjects, 27.7% in former commercial plasma/blood donors, and 2.6% in nondonors. Selling blood or plasma was the strongest independent predictor of HCV seropositivity (odds ratio [OR], 14.4 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 7.1-31.6]). A history of blood transfusion was also independently associated with HCV seropositivity (OR, 8.3 [95% CI, 2.1-32.0]). Plasma donors had a higher risk of being HCV seropositive than did whole-blood donors (OR, 7.6 [95% CI, 2.9-20.9]), and female donors had a lower risk than did male donors (OR, 0.32 [95% CI, 0.12-0.80]). The strength of the association between selling blood and HCV seropositivity was weaker when plasma donors were excluded (OR, 8.0 vs. 14.4)., Conclusions: Unsafe practices during illegal plasma donation led to a high risk of HCV seropositivity for donors during the 1980s and 1990s. Failure to screen for HCV increased the risk of seropositivity for transfusion recipients during this same period. China has taken steps to halt illegal plasma collection and to improve blood-banking methods. However, there will be an ongoing challenge to care for patients with HCV infection, even as its incidence decreases.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between p53 codon 72 polymorphism and susceptibility to keloid., Methods: The p53 genotypes were detected by polymerase chain reaction-reverse dot blot (PCR-RDB) and DNA direct sequencing among 15 healthy controls and 15 patients with keloid., Results: The frequency of the Pro allele (P = 0.035) and Pro/Pro genotype (P = 0.030) in patients was significantly higher than that in the controls. There was no significant difference in the frequency of Pro/Arg and Arg/Arg genotypes between patients and controls., Conclusion: The p53 gene codon 72 polymorphism may play a role in susceptibility to keloid.
