Taking care of people with dementia is stressful for informal caregivers. Respite care can provide a break for them. But it is often underused, and its acceptability can be low in China. One reason is that it fails to meet their needs. This study aimed to explore the preference of caregivers of people with dementia for respite care services. A discrete choice experiment was used. Attributes and levels of respite care were informed by a literature review and expert consultations. A fractional factorial design was used to reduce the number of choice sets. A questionnaire survey was conducted in Tianjin, China. A mixed logit model was used to compute coefficients for attributes and levels. Respite care packages differed in five attributes, which were content, provider, duration, frequency, and cost. 322 caregivers completed valid discrete choice experiment questionnaires. All five attributes were statistically significant. Two most preferred attributes were "providers" (coefficient 1.297, p < 0.001) and "frequency" (coefficient 1.169, p < 0.001). Caregivers prefer highly qualified service providers and frequent respite care. The desirable respite care for caregivers would be assistance with personal care for people with dementia which was provided by an experienced worker with attitudes of understanding and respect towards people with dementia more than 3 times per week regularly and more than 4 h every time with a lower cost. This study offered new information on Chinese dementia caregivers' preferences for respite care. Policymakers should pay attention to the frequency and quality of providers when designing respite care to improve service uptake and ultimately lighten the burden on caregivers of people with dementia. Aims and objectives: To reveal nurses’ self‐reported practice of managing chest tubes and to define decision‐makers for these practices. Background: No consensus exists regarding ideal chest‐tube management strategy, and there are wide variations of practice based on local policies and individual preferences, rather than standardised evidence‐based protocols. Design: This article describes a cross‐sectional study. Methods: Questionnaires were emailed to 31 hospitals in Tianjin, and the sample consisted of 296 clinical nurses whose work included nursing management of chest drains. The questionnaire, which was prepared by the authors of this research, consisted of three sections, including a total of 22 questions that asked for demographic information, answers regarding nursing management that reflected the practice they actually performed and who the decision‐makers were regarding eight chest‐drain management procedures. McNemar's test was used to analyse the data. Results: The results indicated that most respondents thought that it was necessary to manipulate chest tubes to remove clots impeding unobstructed drainage (91.2%). Most respondents indicated that dressings would be changed when the dressing was dysfunctional. At the same time, more than half of respondents approved of changing dressings routinely, and the frequency of changing dressings varied. When drainage was employed for pleural effusion and for a pneumothorax, 64.6% and 94.5% of respondents, respectively, considered that underwater seal‐drainage bottles should be changed routinely, and the frequency of changing bottles both varied. The results indicated that nurses were the primary decision‐makers in the replacement of chest tubes, manipulation of chest tubes and monitoring of drainage fluid. Conclusions: There was considerable variation in respondents’ self‐reported clinical nursing practice regarding management of chest drains. The rationale on which respondents’ practices were based also varied greatly. This study indicated that nurses were the primary decision‐makers for three of eight procedures regarding management of chest drains, which reflects that clinical nurses’ decision‐making power regarding management of chest drains was weak. Relevance to clinical practice: This study describes the nurse‐reported practices of Chinese nurses from Tianjin, including changing and selecting dressing types, manipulating chest tubes, clamping drains and replacing drainage bottles, and the study defines who the decision‐makers were for these interventions. By focusing on nurses’ self‐report of behaviours in managing chest drains (actual nursing practice vs. nursing knowledge), this article also relates the literature to the research findings and denotes the gaps in knowledge for future research. Coxsackievirus A10 (CVA10) is the main pathogen of hand, foot, and mouth disease in China. However, there are no CVA10-specific drugs and vaccines, and the pathogenesis and effects of this virus in the body are unknown. We investigated the effect of a clinically isolated CVA10 virus strain (CVA10–25) to investigate its effect in suckling mice through different infection routes. We observed the dynamic distribution and proliferation of the virus in mouse tissues by infecting suckling mice with different doses of the virus and mice of different ages with the same dose of the virus. We also analysed the pathological characteristics after infection. A formaldehyde-inactivated experimental vaccine was prepared to immunise 5-week-old BALB/c female mice three times, and newborn suckling mice were tested for the presence of maternally transmitted antibodies. The viral load in each organ after intracerebral administration was higher than that after intraperitoneal administration; the peroral administration route did not cause disease in mice. Mouse paralysis and death after infection were related to age. The skeletal muscles, heart, and lung showed histopathological changes after infection. We established a 2-day-old BALB/c suckling mouse model that could be infected intracranially to study the pathogenesis and pathology of CVA10. Maternally transmitted antibodies protected the mice against the virus. This study provides a reference for CVA10-related pathogenesis and vaccine research. • CVA10-25 was adapted to Vero cells to establish a suckling mouse model. • CVA10 was injected into mice of different ages. • Its dynamic distribution and proliferation varied in the body. • Inactivated vaccine showed a good protective effect against viral infection.
